HOLIDAY LIFE INTO LIVING Vinnie's mom, Marie, had surgery several months ago, He went home to take care of her. At the time, she weighed close to 200 lbs. Vinnie had his parents eat NSNG® while he was there, and they enjoyed it more than they thought. Since, they have largely kept up eating healthily -- especially his mom. Vinnie's mom is now down to 135 lbs! This weight loss allowed her For the Christmas show, you might have heard Marie talk about lots of non-NSNG® foods. Vinnie gets it! If he were there, he'd probably have eaten some of the unhealthy foods to a degree. But the next meal, he'd be back to strict NSNG®. Anna also puts some holiday LIL. Her family has a tradition of tamales on Christmas Eve. It's good to avoid talking about diet mentality for one meal. Simply put, it's easier to just eat and enjoy for one meal. However, if you feel you can't do LIL without spinning out of control, stick to your guns. MARKETING SUGAR Part of why people get so out of control over the holidays is the marketing. We've turned something that should be about two days of really indulging (Thanksgiving and Christmas), and made it over a month. DOCTORS AND HEALING Doctors are using medications to stop fires. For many doctors, it's hard to realize just giving medication is not the right course of action. It must be more holistic. Dr. Gerber struggled with weight issues, and tried dietary modifications. He saw LCHF worked for a patient, then did his studies and homework. Once he tried it for himself and had success, he expanded it for his patients. Non-doctors were the ones who ID'd sat fats creating cholesterol as the problem. A relatively new paper in Lancet challenges Ancel Keys's 7 Country Study. This is the real science. People trust their doctors -- but sometimes, people need to be more investigative, and not just accept one answer -- listen to many experts, like Dr. Gerber! INSULIN RESISTANCE .HDL and triglyceride ratio is a marker for insulin This will go down if you eat LCHF most of the time because your metabolic issues will lessen. LDL not the problem, your ratio is a bigger issue. The ratio also demonstrates your insulin resistance which is the indicator of risk for bad health including cardiac health. His brother was losing weight and Corey asked how he was doing it. In 2019, it really took hold for Corey. He saw a photo of himself and it occurred to him he didn't look good. He wanted to lose weight. Corey was 37 and at his heaviest he was around 225 at 5'10"ish. When Corey left highschool, he weighed 175 or 180 and played several sports. He wanted some of that back. For some time, thought about it and teeter tottered. He didn't want to throw everything in his pantry away, and his brother finally got him on board for real. Initially, Corey wasn't ready to do the work. But then, in 2019, something clicked and he was ready. His sugar addiction is real. If he has a little bit, he goes off the rails. GETTING VACCINATED Vinnie believes everyone should make their own decisions. But, he chose to get vaccinated and boosted. He consulted with several doctors and decided the benefits were worth any associated risks. He also got the flu shot! Make your own educated decisions -- but make sure you're getting accurate information. REFUSING TO LIE Lying is a big part of the health and fitness industry. Companies steal folks' good intentions all the time. Vinnie was paid to lie at times. He helped people lose weight and then they'd sell BS products. But then, Vinnie realized he couldn't be a part of this -- especially where people's health was concerned. Vinnie won't lie to you. Trust him, he'd make more money if he would. LAUREN LIEBERMAN Lauren has a PhD and teaches in the kinesiology department. Her work focuses on kids who are visually impaired and those who are deaf and blind. She teaches adaptive physical education at SUNY Brockport. She pursued her doctorate because she felt that she could reach more people with that degree. And in teaching, she founded Camp Abilities. This has helped her, her students, and the countless kids who have taken part. CAMP ABILITIES Lauren began a program to expose her students to those with visual impairments and in turn, give visually impaired kids programs that suited them. Her program, Camp Abilities, is worldwide now. She received a Fulbright to pursue this internationally. Camp Abilities is an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Part of what Lauren hopes to teach these kids is they can make a career out of what they are passionate about. Over the first few years, she was in the red and the university fronted the cost. But she wanted to make sure the camp was accessible and not cost-prohibitive. She applies to and receives many grants which helps. Grant programs and donors make all the difference. FITTING IN WORKOUTS Vinnie's been so busy pushing this movie that he hasn't left the house in ages. But, he makes sure to fit in a workout on the bike. It's less than he would do normally, but it's something. Anna does something similar. She spreads out her weight lifting sets on the ends of doing tasks around the house. For example, she'll do a set and then unpack. Then she'll do a set and respond to some emails. Then she'll do another set, and so on. You can break up your workouts just to get some exercise in. And, something is better than nothing, even if it's fifteen minutes or just a walk! Just get moving. HOLIDAY RECIPES Anna has great NSNG recipes in her cookbooks and on her site. Vinnie's going to make her egg nog. Don't forget to bake in time for it to cool properly. You need a cup of half and half, four egg yolks, ground cinnamon, vanilla (without sugar). Whisk egg yolks for awhile, they will start to get light and fluffy, even without sugar. Heat up the milk and cream -- Anna uses whole milk and heavy cream to make her own. Take a little bit of this and drip it into the egg yolks -- it's called tempering the yolks so the eggs don't poach. Add until it's all mixed in. Then add the powdered spices and the vanilla. High quality vanilla really ties everything together. It makes it taste like a real dessert. Cover it with the saran wrap touching the surface of the pudding and put it in the fridge. She has been on the show before! Sometimes she is lovingly referred to as 'Vinnie's girlfriend,' despite the fact the two haven't met in person. She has lost 50 lbs eating NSNG®. She began this way of eating in 2015. The first 30-40 went quickly, but the last 10-20 took far longer. This just goes to show: if you feel like you're stalling, be patient. FINDING HOPE THROUGH NSNG® Before this, she did some boring and blasé exercise, and even with calorie restriction, she didn't lose weight. The gym wasn't fun and she didn't feel good. Now, that's very different. This way of eating gave her more energy and made her feel like she could do more. It gave her hope. CONQUERING SOMETHING NEW Leona first heard of these in 2018. She was not really an athlete growing up. But this piqued her interest. Spartan Races come in all different shapes and sizes. The races are different lengths, have different obstacles varying in difficulty and number, and the like. Leona wanted to push herself out of her comfort zone and do something different. She did her first one in 2019! Vinnie's always loved these adventure-type events, but he does think these are kind of crazy! These certainly keep us entertained. They have little quirks, like penalties if you mess up the obstacles. In some heats, you'll have to do burpees, for example. Leona had to do 75 in her last race. Part of the race is the mental aspect. You have to get over that feeling that you might not be able to do something. He, however, was 350 lbs himself at around 5'11". Now he is around 195 lbs. He's also now a runner, and he does some fasting. He finished 5th recently in a 5k! His wife really encouraged him to lose weight via low carb. She said that he was going to die and leave her with their kids. Tro has specialties in obesity, diabetes, nutrition. He recognizes that the whole food part of Game Changers is real, but the plant based part is messy (at best) science. He feels that setting an example for his patients is incredibly important. Tro also strongly believes in fasted exercise, though it is less important than diet itself. NUTRITION EDUCATION Tro did med school, 3 years of training for internal medicine. In the whole of med school, they maybe spent a week on nutrition education while learning other things. The nutrition consultations that he did give, he'd say "cut sugar and fat, go see a nutritionist," and that was it. If a doctor with the best, very extensive, education can't figure out why HE is fat, that's a problem. Most of his people start with a dirty keto approach. He doesn't think this is the best, but if it helps them, then okay! He'll teach people how to intermittently fast. He also does webinars pretty consistently. Starting at age 10, he began to put on weight. He was a skinny kid, then the guidelines changed and he became heavy. In 2004, he probably weighed 285 lbs and found the Atkins story. He got down to 215 but wanted to get down to 180. He had a second child then fell off the wagon and gained a lot of the weight back. BEATING DISEASE WITH DIET Eventually, in 2014, Damian was diagnosed with hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and more. He was told to eat a lot of carbs each day and he knew that wouldn't work for him. It was important to him that he get his A1C down. In 2017, he discovered Jason Fung and The Obesity Code. This lead him to keto -- but pure keto, not commercialized keto. When they did Mont Blanc, Don was the heavy guy. He could still climb as well as the rest. But, the guides look at him and thought he was obese. When he's with Vinnie, he eats clean. However, as soon as Vinnie's nephews pulled out the Swedish Fish, Don was all in. He has a sugar and carb addiction. Don would do 70 hours of aerobics a month, but remained morbidly obese. About two years ago, he tried to fight this addiction. He abstained completely from sugar and grains. Now, Don looks fabulous -- slim and trim and he looks as athletic and fit as he is. The only thing Don has to do is continue to fight this addiction. While it isn't an easy task to start, it becomes much easier with time. Cut all of the crap out and go all in for several weeks, and you will notice the addiction start to fade. Don can now climb to his heart's content, without his weight literally weighing him down. If you're pounding the nuts and you feel like you can't stop eating them, be mindful of that binge-like feeling. BAD DIET MENTALITY You need to try to beat the diet mentality when breaking the addiction. If you eat something a little carby, try not to think you've been 'bad.' Just get back on the horse. If you have a pear or something like that, don't beat yourself up. This is about fueling your body healthily. This isn't a reward and punishment system. KETONE LEVELS If your number is quite low on the monitor, something might be seeping in. You may be 95% eating 'ketogenic' foods, but that 5% can throw your numbers off. Going back and forth can also confuse these numbers. "Keto" products will often affect your ketone levels...negatively. Almond milk or an almond butter smoothie could affect these levels. Apples, too. These little things add up if you do them every day. However, Krista also lost weight while eating this way. She and her family were featured in the first Fat Doc. Her son has Type 1 diabetes. The family discovered this when she came back from a trip, and her son's weight had dropped from 46 to 40 lbs. Immediately, she rushed him to the hospital and he was diagnosed. In that moment, they realized they would have to change the way they eat. The dietitian was prescribing them all kinds of sugary foods. She was told the kid needed 60g of carbs a meal, and she wanted to do anything she could to help him, so she did it. She feels her diet was healthier before this. For 3 years, Bethany followed these rules and her son felt truly terrible and unhealthy. Then, she discovered that high carb was not the way to go. MANAGING TYPE 1 DIABETES It took Bethany awhile to realize eating all of this sugar was not helping her son. He had headaches, his blood sugar was always high, and it was simply unhealthy. Bethany found low carb and it has, with careful control, worked wonders for her son and for her family. When her son was 8, her doctor was so incredulous and said her son wouldn't grow right and would have an eating disorder. It was clear he just didn't understand. Her son was eating veggies and good protein and the like. She could see what the food was doing to her son's blood sugar, and it was clear that this diet was helping keeping it under control. This has given their family so much life and joy. Her son is healthy, smart, a stellar athlete, and has a fantastic relationship with food and with his parents. THE DIABETES SOLUTION Doctors aren't curious as to what their type 1 patients are eating. They don't even ask. Bethany has been so frustrated by the medical community's treatment of type 1. He realized he had to take action about his morbid obesity when his daughter ran out into the middle of the street and he couldn't run to catch her. At that time, Scott was 550 lbs. Nothing happened to his daughter, but it was a wake up call. Shortly thereafter, he found Vinnie and other like-minded individuals. He finally started moving around. Scott is 6'1" 250 lbs now! Last year, he had skin removal surgery which he is grateful for. They took about 10 lbs off. INEFFECTIVE CALORIE DEFICITS Previously, Scott had tried everything, he thought. Weight Watchers, shakes, CICO, and more. He had a gastric bypass at 552 lbs and got down to 276. None of it stuck. Scott and so many others yo-yo with CICO. It's not sustainable. There has never been evidence that processed foods are good for you, but all of this meat substitutes are just that. There's a way to be a healthy vegan. But you have to be intentional. IMPROVING METABOLIC HEALTH Dr. Ovadia focuses on the metabolic health of his patients. We can learn so much from this. Over 80% of adults could not meet in-range levels of some measures of this health. There are several good measures of our metabolic health: Blood pressure. If you're on medication, you've already failed. Blood glucose. Cholesterol LDL levels. Waist circumference. Triglycerides. He talks through these markers. Consider asking your doctor about how you match up here, or check out the ranges online. We can improve our metabolic health through our nutrition. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY If you don't think you have time to 'eat healthy,' Vinnie bets you do. Do you make your kids' breakfast. Go do your morning breakfast-preparing routine, and see how long it takes you. Do it at a normal speed, but don't count washing dishes. Now, scramble some eggs the next morning for you and your kids and see how long that takes. It will likely be comparable. If making healthy food means waking up three or five minutes earlier, that will be worth it when you feel better. We have to take responsibly for our decisions. You CAN do this. This lesson--of taking responsibility--should apply to everything you want to do that might feel a little out of reach right now because you're busy. You can also meal prep. Boil some eggs and put them in the fridge. Or make some bone broth. When you pull these things out the next day, it's faster than making cereal.
