Head of the class no matter the cropTwitter message Anonymous : Listened to the two Shows with Elaine while baling hay. You could hear the Hayes boys squirming, I know I would. Thanks for bringing it up!515.207.9640 – let us know why you listen to Farm4ProfitNative Microbials - Purpose built microbial solutions for your animal, from your animal.Lisa Marotz, PhDMicrobiome Scientist, Native MicrobialsLisa obtained her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from UC San Diego in 2020. During her graduate research she developed novel protocols and computational tools to elucidate complex microbial communities through next-generations sequencing which led to more than 20 peer-reviewed publications. After graduating she spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow where she focused on scaling up rapid qPCR testing at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and identify the microbial communities co-associated with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Lisa joined Native Microbials in early 2021 where she designs and analyses both commercial and academic studies to validate novel dairy cow endomicrobials.Who is Native Microbials founded in 2015 with a simple mandate to extend proprietary technical advancements in genomics, microbiology, and bioinformatics into Animal Health and Nutrition. now have a global team of scientists, technicians, and commercial support personnel that works tirelessly to ensure our world's animals can receive the best microbes earth has to offerWe have talked with BW Fusion about microbes in crop production, but Why use microbials in livestock?Microbes that are native to animals are safer, more sustainable, and vastly superior influencers of the environmental phenomena happening in animals than anything humanity has already discovered or designed. What is an endomicrobial? What ways can microbials be delivered to animals or livestock?Feed, water, what else? What animals can microbials work for??How can feeding microbials to livestock increase profitability? What types of things can microbials achieve in livestock?DairyBeefPoultrySwineEquinePetsHow do you go about discovering what is going to work for each animal?Decode the Interactions (what research is done to figure out what works)The Native Microbials Technology Platform transforms the analysis of microbial communities with a unique identification of microbial strains that are the most efficacious for desired mechanisms of commercial, health, environmental, and societal value.Biomass (how do we track the amount needed and not “overdose”)Microbial populations and systems are not static—they are dynamic and constantly responding to changes in their environment. The number of cells in a microbial community can change significantly over time for any multitude of reasons within different microbe Why does this matter? At Native Microbials we have pioneered the incorporation of absolute cell counts into microbial community analysis to measure the overall system more directly and how it shifts in response to random or induced perturbations.Activity Layers (What is really working in these combinations)Although microbial communities are incredibly diverse, only a portion of the community members will be active at any given time. this is done through the activation and deactivation of specific metabolic processes. Delivery (How do we get the microbial to our livestock)Moist feed rations, containing free radicals and endogenous bioburden and feed sanitation practices such as steam pelleting, can all negatively impact viability of a novel microbial solution. Mixing procedures on-farm or in your animals feed can also be a challenge. Native Microbials partners with many farms and industries to understand and incorporate the details of these on-farm challenges into the engineering of our microbial solutions through product formulations, specific and customized administration protocols, and value-added services like mixing studies thus enabling our customers to extract maximum value out of the products What is the best advice you have every been given? Ep 197Edison Motors - The Future of Electric Drive Semis

Pre-Roll Commercial – TBDWelcome to a Farm4Profit episode Share their ideas at [email protected] listener review today is brought to you by Geringhoff – head of the class no matter the crop(Add LIB)812.257.xxxx TextYou Guys Rock! You’re are the best podcast in Huxley! YOU can now text or leave us a voicemail – 515.207.9640Chace Barber - CEO Edison MotorsChace is a truck driver with 14 years of experience. He ran his own trucking company started 5 years ago after university with a 1969 Kenworth. The trucking side of the company was shut down so that Chace & Eric could move to BC and focus on solar equipment manufacturing, production & installation.Chace is co-founder of SEI, a solar installation company that designs & manufactures it’s own racking systems. The company manufactures several products for Finning.Who is Chace Barber? What is Edison Motors? These trucks are built and designed by truckers and mechanics for truckers and mechanics to be able to service. Edison Motors was started by truckers, for truckers. These are going to work hard but be easy to work on we want them to look great, be fun to drive, and last forever. Diesel locomotive style hybrid - electric drive powertrain build for the logging/vocational industryA diesel generator and batteries working together to power electric drives Better fuel mileage, lower maintenance costs, more power. NO MORE UGLY ELECTRIC TRUCKSWe’re manufacturing trucks for the logging and vocational industry Other team members? How are you going to accomplish a locomotive style semi tractor?Step 1 - 1962 LW-923 Proof of ConceptWe are currently building a proof of concept truck using a 1962 Kenworth. This will have a 3306 CAT diesel generator charging a battery bank, running a frame mounted electric drive motor into a traditional set of 46,000 rear endsStep 2 - Prototypewith lessons learned from the 1962 proof of concept we will build the Edison truckThis truck will integrate multiple electric drive motors. From lessons learned from our proof of concept, we will scale from one motor to e-axles (subject to part availability). This fully built prototype will be made with the same parts used in the retrofit kitsStep 3 - Retrofit kitOnce all the kinks are ironed out and prototype is hard tested, we plan to offer the complete parts package to retrofit any classic truck - We believe it’s better to recycle an old truck then make something brand new. This will allow Edison Motors to start scaling up manufacturing without having to jump fully into building a new truck from the very start.Step 4 - Edison LocomotiveThis is where we start building Edison branded trucks. These are purpose build logging and vocational trucks, custom ordered to the specifications of the end user. How is this project being funded? There are currently 1590 Investors and Edison has raised over $389,000 to fund the building of the electric truck. If this project is successful, what does it mean for the future of the industry? What is the timeline of the project?Any other questions we should be asking you about this? Ep 193Ways to Get More Land

Improving Your Farm Lease ContractA guide to understanding the business of farmland leasesImportance of LeasingMore than half of Iowa’s farmland is rented to tenant operators. The trend over the past several decades has been for more of Iowa’s farmland to be leased rather than operated by its owners. In many cases, retired farmers or their heirs wish to continue to own farms, but do not want to operate them. Leasing farmland involves a business agreement between the owner and the operator. Reasons for Farm LeasesLand is an expensive resource. A large capital investment is required to purchase enough land to provide the farm family an opportunity to earn a satisfactory living. Many individuals or institutions that own land are looking for someone to farm it to provide a return on their investment as well as maintain its productivity. Common Types of LeasesThe four most common types of leases used in Iowa are the fixed cash lease, the flexible cash lease, the crop share lease, and the custom farming contract. The common terms of these leases are described below.Fixed Cash LeaseUnder a fixed cash lease the tenant pays a given amount of cash rent per acre per year for the use of the farm resources. The tenant has a free rein in planning the crop and livestock production program on the farm unit, and receives all the crop and any associated USDA commodity program payments.Flexible Cash LeaseA variation of the fixed cash lease is a flexible lease, in which the actual rent to be paid depends on the actual yields attained and/or the selling prices available during the lease period. This ensures that the rent paid is in line with the profitability of the crops grown that year..Crop Share LeaseThe distinguishing characteristic of a crop share lease is that the owner receives a share of the crop and USDA payments as a return for the land resources used. The owner normally furnishes land and buildings and pays half of the costs of inputs such as fertilizer, seed, and pesticides when the crop is divided 50-50. Owners are usually responsible for drying, storing, and marketing their share of the crop, as well. The tenant usually furnishes all the labor, fuel, equipment, and the other half of the shared expenses. Custom Farming ContractUnder a custom farming contract the operator supplies all the labor and equipment needed to perform tillage, planting, pest control, harvesting and moving of crops to storage. The landowner pays all other expenses, and receives all the crop and any USDA payments. The custom operator receives a fixed payment per acre from the owner, or a fixed payment for each operation performed.Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Types of LeasesAll types of leases have advantages and disadvantages to each party. The tenant and owner should consider this before choosing the type of lease and the terms that should be incorporated in it.Fixed Cash LeaseAdvantages of a fixed cash lease:The lease is simple with relatively few chances for misunderstanding. The owner is relieved of making day-to-day operating decisions. The owner has very little financial risk. The tenant has maximum freedom in planning and developing the cropping and livestock programs. The tenant has fewer records to keep when multiple landlords are involved.Disadvantages and potential problems of the fixed cash lease:A fair cash rental rate may have to be renegotiated each year.Cash rents are likely to be too low in times of rising prices and increasing yields, and too high in times of low prices or low yields.Selling prices and production costs may be higher or lower than anticipated when the rental rate is set.Tenants are required to supply more operating capital.Tenants bear all the risk of production shortfalls.Flexible Cash LeaseAdvantages of a flexible cash lease:The amount of rent to pay increases or decreases automatically from year-to-year as prices and yields change. The need for the owner and tenant to renegotiate the rental rate each year is significantly reduced.Disadvantages and potential problems of the flexible cash lease:Both parties must agree on a formula for setting the cash rent each year or every few years. Both parties must agree on how to determine the prices and yields to include in the formula. There is uncertainty about how much the tenant will pay and the owner will receive each year.Crop Share LeaseAdvantages of a crop share lease:Risks associated with price and yield variations are shared. The owner is more involved in making decisions and marketing the grain during the year. Both parties share the benefits from adoption of yield-increasing technology, or unexpected high yields or prices. The owner receives more information about yields and inputs used each year.A second USDA payment limit is created.Disadvantages or potential problem areas of a crop share lease:The landlord and tenant must agree on how production expenses will be shared.Adjustments for sharing costs for storage and drying facilities, herbicides that r

What’s Working in AG - TBDBrad Baker is Vice President - Sales, Marketing and Product Management for Salford Group.Brad started as a mechanical engineering technologist and In 2014 Brad became Salford’s first official Product Manager, taking an overarching view of the needs in the market place, and coordinating engineering, production and sales to meet the needs of farmers. In 2019 Brad stepped into the role of Vice President, a natural progression for his career path at Salford.Brad enjoys spending time, and travelling, with his wife and two children. He has passion for high performance machinery that once took him to France to see the world class Le Mans endurance race. He also enjoys riding snowmobile when the winters in Southern Canada cooperate. David Webster’sTillage Segment (Salford)---What’s new and available for producers to get excited about this Spring? At Salford Group, we are committed to improving the economics of farming with the best available solutions in tillage and application. When producers invest in a Salford Group product, they know they’re getting durability, versatility, and precision to take their operations to next-level performance.Salford Group is a global leader in the manufacturing of tillage and precision application equipment, with facilities in Iowa, Georgia, Ontario, Manitoba, and Russia. The company dedicates its ongoing innovation efforts to precision, durability and versatility in the field, while improving the economics of farming for producers worldwideWhat are some of the latest advancements in tillage equipment for seed bed preparation? We launched a new series of high-speed tillage tools over the last two years and seed bed preparation was key in our design focus from the beginning. For example, we optimized the blade angle and spacing between the rows of coulters on the HALO HSD (our compact disk variant of the HALO) to optimize soil flow for more even distribution. We also worked hard to eliminate a common problem seen with compact disks, which is “porpoising”. This is a phenomenon that occurs in tougher soil conditions where the front coulters begin to lift out of the ground at higher speed and them re-engage, causing the tool to oscillate similar to how a porpoise swims in the water. Obviously, this leaves an undesirable condition for seeding, so it was important for use to resolve it. Without revealing our secrets too much, we paid close attention to the manner in which we applied down pressure. It took a lot of testing, but we are confident we have one of the best high-speed disks on the market for sed bed preparation. We also introduced a new finishing system for the HALO series this past year, which is a double rolling basket system. We really like to leveling job this system does. It’s a pair of 14” diameter rolling baskets with opposing helixes on a walking axle. The down pressure can be adjusted from the cab of the tractor. We were surprise at just how versatile this setup is in a lot of different soil types and conditions. It is optimal for seed bed preparation. We also have the new HALO VRT. This is our most advanced tillage tool to date and really is the year-round tillage solution many of our customers have been seeking. In terms of seed bed preparation it can do it all. You can adjust the angle of the rows of independently mount coulters on the fly. Therefore it running a minimum tillage past ahead of the planter and want to level out some ruts from last fall, you can adjust the coulter angles on the fly to a more aggressive position to level ruts in the same pass. It brings a new level of precision to tillage and we’re very excited about it.Finally, our Independent Series line of tools continue to be great options, especially with dealing with high levels of residue and moist conditions because of the greater area around each individual coulter. We’ve had customers run tools like the I-1200 or I-2200 (true vertical tillage models) in the fall and not need a tillage pass in the spring. The independent coulters work much better than a traditional gang in maintaining tillage depth across the tillage swath. The I-420

Ep 171Leadership and Innovation with Steve Sukup

Steven E. Sukup was born in Sheffield, Iowa and attended the Iowa State University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. A Republican, he served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003 for Iowa’s 18th district. Steve is now the President and CEO of Sukup Manufacturing. We don’t get to interview very many guests that have their own Wikipedia page! Our goal in the conversation today is to help provide insights to our listeners on how they can become better leaders to help them grow and ultimately leader to higher farm or business profitability.Let’s first roll through a little of the Sukup History – Giving us a starting Point for perspective on this conversation:Eugene Sukup, a young farmer, found drying to be slow, and pockets of grain began to overheat and spoil. Eugene began making the stirring augers and he patented the idea for the Stirway® stirring machine, and Eugene and Mary Sukup founded Sukup Manufacturing Co. in 1963. Sukup continued to expand the company to include a full line of grain handling products, including dryers in 1998. (Nearly 60 years in the grain bin industry as family owned)After serving as the President of his company for 32 years, Eugene Sukup turned over the position to his son, Charles, in 1995. His son Steve served as the company Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Steve also served in the Iowa Legislature from 1994-2002 and was Speaker Pro Tem of the Iowa House of Representatives. What did you learn about yourself to balance your responsibilities as an elected official and the family business day to day responsibilities? What were some key things you learned about your state during your time as a representative?Eugene held the role of Chairman of the Board, and was active in the business until passing away in July 2018. What were some of the big characteristics of your dad that made him who he was and led to his success? Also, what about traits your brother Charles has that led to his success in the 25 years as CEOIn 2001, Sukup took a significant step and began manufacturing the grain bins themselves providing a “one stop shop” for grain storage and handling needs, and becoming an innovation leader in the bin industry with multiple patented features. On February 1, 2020, Charles Sukup transitioned to Chairman of the Board, and Steve Sukup assumed the role of President and CEO. Much of the family is involved in the company. What about having family involved in the success of Sukup makes them even more special? How does your family handle the regular company struggles when working with family?Do the family dynamics in Sukup resemble those dynamics of a family farm?Sukup Manufacturing Co. has kept its home in Sheffield, Iowa, the same community where Eugene and Mary founded the company in 1963. It employs more than 600 people.Ten years after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti, there are more than 300 Sukup SafeTHomes® in Haiti, and nearly 400 total worldwide. Sukup partners with non-profit organization GoServ Global to distribute these hurricane-proof structures for post-disaster relief.Where or who did the idea come from for the safe-t-home project?Sukup Manufacturing Co. remains the world’s largest family-owned and operated manufacturer of grain storage, grain drying and handling equipment, and steel buildings.Sukup Manufacturing doesn’t get to where it is by accident. There has been some great leadership before you and with your contributions as well. How can our listeners start working on themselves to be better individual leaders for the farms, their families, and their communities?Q: WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?A: I like to say that moving targets are harder to hit. So as long as you’re making progress, moving forward, make sure you have good information, make a decision, and then work hard to make it a success.Q: YOUR FAMILY IS ON A FIRST-NAME BASIS WITH MANY PEOPLE IN THE STATE AND ACROSS THE INDUSTRY. YOU’VE BEEN GENEROUS IN SHEFFIELD, AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, AND AROUND THE WORLD. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?We enjoy our community. Iowa has been good to us. It’s a great place. I think I’m up to 42 states, and I’ve visited 31 countries, but I live in Iowa by choice and I enjoy it. It’s a great place with friendly people, and everybody’s interactive with each other.Q: WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?Q: WHAT IS THE STEEL MARKET LIKE NOW? Q: WHAT TYPE OF SELF AWARENESS DOES IT TAKE TO GO ON A SEARCH FOR A MEMBER OF YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM OUTSIDE OF THE FAMILY?WAS THIS INITIATED WITHIN OR BY A CONSULTANT?The Sheffield company, which has three generations of family members leading and working in the business, said Wednesday that John Teeple, a non-relative who worked 23 years in leadership roles at Deere, will join the business as chief operating officer.Teeple most recently led Amazon's worldwide business development efforts in agriculture and was a senior vice president at DTN, an agricultural data company that's based in Minnesota. When he’s not working, he spends time with his wife and two boys.Refresher…….What is drainage tile?Drain tile is a system of pipes with perforations or holes that channels water away from intended areasField tile is tubing, or pipe buried in the ground to convey subsurface water to an outlet such as a stream or ditchUses Outlets and inlets strategicallyWhy do we install drainage tile? The purpose of subsurface drainage is to lower the water table in the soil. The major reason for installing subsurface drainage is to improve the productivity of the farmland. Higher yields translate into more returns. Tile is not a luxury, it’s a necessityIs this trueEverywhere? How does tile help the customers you work with and your family?Do you know of tile being used in southern regions?Used with orchard cropsUsed in connection with irrigationVarious types of tiling patternsTile drainage should be designed so the water table between tile lines can be lowered within 24 hours after a rain to a level that will not cause crop injury. The herringbone system (b) consists of parallel tile laterals that enter the main at an angle, usually from both sides. This system is used for long, relatively narrow wet areas such as those next to flat drainageways. The parallel or gridiron system (a) is similar to the herringbone system except that the laterals enter the main from only one side. This system is used on flat, regularly shaped fields with uniform soil types. The double-main system (c) is a modification of the gridiron and herringbone systems. It is used where a depression, which is frequently a natural watercourse, divides the field. A random system (d) is used where the topography is undulating or rolling and contains isolated wet areas. How do you know what style of tile pattern to use on your farm?Who helps with this? Can you pre-plan and install later?Iowa has prairie potholes with very little slope What Software is used – are there different kinds? How are things mapped, planned out, how accurate is this?Various installation methodsPlowTrencherExcavatorAre there any benefits to one over the other?Could they all be necessary for one job?Covid-19 causing supply chain issues?Tile?Connectors?Other?Transportation delays?Tile Drainage Inspection and Maintenance – if we have tile what should we be doing to make sure we maximize that investment? You should inspect your tile drainage system regularly and conduct maintenance when required. Slightly more than half of the 375 different soils series mapped in Iowa have problems with excess water. The drainage of farmland is obviously important for improving the productivity of Iowa agriculture. Based on the large number of acres susceptible to excessive wetness and the yield response from removing this wetness, farmers and landowners are becoming increasingly interested in drainage. AND that’s just Iowa……..!The two major methods of farmland drainage are surface drainage where standing water is removed using surface ditches and subsurface drainage where excess water is removed through a system of underground drainage tiles – that is what we are going to focus onJoel Hayes – He and his brother run Hayes Bros Drainage in Grundy County Iowa and have been in business since 2009. They have covered most of the state of Iowa during their time in business.Their dad/family also farms around 3500 acresJoel Lange - @centraliowa_rainage - Joel and his family own and operate Central Iowa Drainage in Guthrie County Iowa where they have been farming since 2012.Joel’s family moved their entire farm from O-Neill Nebraska to Iowa in 2012General QuestionsWhat is drainage tile?Drain tile is a system of pipes with perforations or holes that channels water away from intended areasField tile is tubing or pipe buried in the ground to convey subsurface water to an outlet such as a stream or ditchWhat are outlets? The structures used to control the minimum elevation at which water leaves the drainage tile, which in turn controls the maximum elevation of the groundwater table in the area drained by the tile system to which the outlet control structure is attached. What are inlets?Purpose: A common practice that is used to. drain farmed depressions is a tile riser, which is essentially a pipe that acts as a direct conduit for water from the field to the receiving ditch or stream. A blind inlet or French drain is used to filter at least sediment from the water that is drained from the field. Why do we install drainage tile? The purpose of subsurface drainage is to lower the water table in the soil. The water table is the level at which the soil is entirely saturated with water. The excess water must be removed to a level below the ground surface where it will not interfere with plant root growth and development. The major reason for installing subsurface drainage is to improve the productivity of the farmland. Higher yields translate into more returns. This is especially true in recent years due to higher grain prices. So the investment decision is based on whether the higher crop returns will justify the investment in subsurface drainage.Types of tilePerforatedSolidComes with socksHow long is tile good for? When does it need replaced?Useful life of clay tileWhen was plastic first installedIs that plastic technology improved for today? Is there a right time to install tile?Always….Is there a wrong time to install tile?Reasons to tile when inputs are highWe want to put tile in….how do we get started?Prepare a planContact the USDA for approval – starts at the FSA officeWhat are recommended best practice steps to take?Mistakes to avoid? If it’s hard to expand your farm by buying high priced ground or renting more ground, how can tile help improve your bottom line?Tiling for a tax deductions…..does this work?Better than equipment purchases?Any specific tile tax breaks?Figuring out return on investment on tileCan you believe the information coming from tile guys? – Do they just want to sell more tile? Are there other resources to use? ISU Ag Decision MakerThe most difficult part of computing a tile investment analysis is estimating the yield response from the improved drainage. The size of the expected yield improvement dramatically impacts the economic feasibility of installing tile drainage, as shown in the example below.Example:A 10 bushel per acre
