Ep 295Mid-Year Motivational Mashup

001-Pre-Show - Opening Clip Some real shit that you all need to understand. If you want to be the best in whatever you do, you gotta start acting differently than everybody else. If you want the nicest car, the nicest lifestyle, and the nicest partner, the best of everything comes with a price. It comes from grinding through those late nights. It comes from grinding through those early mornings and those exhausting days where your body is telling you to give up. Every day, you are presented with two paths. One path leads to your true potential, it leads to your dreams and goals. And the other path is you staying. The same. Most of you are stuck on the path of staying the same. Stop blaming everyone else and take responsibility. One of my favorite parts of the meetings and conferences I attend is the motivational speakers with great stories. In celebration of 4 years of this podcast we wanted to provide you with an episode to reflect on if you ever need a little extra motivation. We are taking 25-30 clips from tiktok from some of the leading motivational speakers to share with you today. Listen in, take something to work on, and come back again to grab some more. Ready to go?!?!001-Opening Clip If you Stay in bed. If you stay on the couch, if you stay in your comfort zone. If you only do what is easy, your life will be hard. But if you do, what is hard, if you get up, if you grind, if you are relentless, if you work as hard as possible when other people are slacking off, your life will be easy.01-Ed Mylett – Small margin of difference The difference between winning and losing in life and everything, and being a great mother and not a great father, and not a great leader, and not wealthy, and not a big business and not making a difference and not is so small, it's almost too scary to talk about. And that small thing. All my life I've been trying to figure out what's the thing, what's the separator? They read one book a month. They read one more. They do 30 minutes on the treadmill. No, they do 30 plus one more. They do 10 reps on the bench. Press no, 10 reps, one more. When you set that standard your entire life, Life begins to shift and change.01-Setting bigger goals than you imagine helps you hit your true desires/goals Raise your standards. One of the most damaging things that any human can do is set low standards and then achieve those standards. I would rather you set your sights, not on the moon, but on the stars, because in the process of shooting for the stars, you will hit the moon guaranteed. But in the process of shooting for the moon, you might completely miss it and hit nothing.01-Ed Mylett - The road to success will feel painful, but will be worth it in the end Let me tell you what comes on the road to success. If recently, at any point in the last 12 months, you've experienced doubt. If you have a lot of fear or anxiety on the road you're on, or if you've experienced those emotions recently about what you're doing, you feeling like an imposter, a give imposter syndrome, like nobody knows. I don't really know what I'm doing. You're on the road that I think you should be on the right road. The road less traveled.02-Be more than average Just want you to remember that average is the enemy. Success is your responsibility, and change can take place in an instant if you are willing to flip the switch.03-Aggressively working towards a goal you know will take time Aggressive patience is a concept where, where you, you work every single day. As hard as you can towards your goal, but you also understand at the same time that it's going to take time. All right? And this is a concept that people get very confused about because you hear people, other people out there say, patience. You gotta be patient, you gotta be patient. And people misinterpret that and think that like that means that they can just chill. Yeah, and their goals will eventually happen, and that's just not the way it works. It's aggressive patients. It's executing day in, it's executing day out. It's executing for weeks, months, years. 03-Something that will help you be patient is developing a love for the journey The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination. And when you love the journey, the goals just happen. You hit milestones as a side effect, cuz it doesn't matter at that point. I don't care if I can lift this much weight or run this fast. I mean that's cool, but I don't love it as much as I love the journey, I love the journey. What does the journey consist of? Sucking at something, failing, getting better, learning. Start it over, do it again. When you fall in love with the journey, everything else takes care of itself.04-Ed Mylett – watch out for those who want to squash your dreams Dream big. And protect those dreams. Not everybody wants to see you win. And the reality is, the bigger your dream, the more they want to shit on it. They're gonna be so intimidated because you're gonna have to chang

Here are some examples:Permits and Licensing: Depending on the type of agritourism business you're starting, you may need to obtain permits and licenses from local and state governments. These can be expensive and time-consuming to acquire.Liability Insurance: Agritourism businesses often involve visitors interacting with livestock, equipment, and other potential hazards. It's important to have liability insurance in case of accidents or injuries.Infrastructure: Agritourism businesses often require infrastructure like parking lots, restrooms, and picnic areas. These can be expensive to build and maintain, but they're necessary to provide a safe and comfortable experience for visitors.Marketing and Advertising: It's important to promote your agritourism business to potential customers, but marketing and advertising can be expensive. It's important to develop a comprehensive marketing plan that targets your ideal customers and fits within your budget.Employee Training: If you have employees working on your farm or ranch, it's important to provide them with proper training and safety protocols. These costs can add up over time and should be factored into your budget.Taxes: Agritourism businesses are subject to a variety of taxes, including property taxes, sales taxes, and income taxes. It's important to understand your tax obligations and to set aside funds to pay them.Legal Fees: Agritourism businesses may require legal assistance for issues like liability waivers, zoning laws, and contract disputes. Legal fees can be expensive, so it's important to have a plan in place to cover these costs.Accessibility: Making your agritourism business accessible to visitors with disabilities can be expensive, requiring the installation of ramps, handrails, and other accommodations. It's important to factor these costs into your budget and to comply with accessibility regulations.Emergency Planning: Agritourism businesses need to have emergency plans in place for situations like severe weather, medical emergencies, and power outages. Developing and implementing these plans can be time-consuming and expensive, but they're essential for the safety of your visitors and employees. What did we miss? What advice would you give yourself at ag 18 or to someone who is 18 and listening to use right nowSummary & Challenge Here are 10 successful agritourism businesses in Iowa:Living History Farms: Located in Urbandale, Living History Farms is an outdoor museum that showcases Iowa's ag

Ep 283Safeguarding Farmer Profitability : Flex Lease Insurance

Flex Lease InsuranceGuest:Guest Bio Who is Common Ground IO?What are their offerings?Who is Hudson Crop?History, Mission, VisionHudson is a market-leading specialty insurer that offers a wide range of property and casualty insurance products to corporations, professional firms, and individuals through retailers, wholesalers and program administratorsHow did this partnership come about?Flex lease insurance How it works:If…Commodity prices rally after you have contracted grain, orCommodity prices fall after your Flex Lease Agreement is negotiated based on current market rates and you didn’t contract your grian hoping for a price increase later in the seasonAnd…Your Flex Lease Agreement has a bonus clause that you must pay more to your landlord in rent due to higher revenuesThen…Flex Lease Insurance covers the difference from the agreed upon rental rates in your agreement and the new rental rate whether due to a bonus or a commodity price fluctuationHow has progress come? What impact will this project have on ethanol production in the midwestWhy is it such a focus now?How will this help farmers?Advantages of flex leasesThe actual rent paid adjusts automatically as yields or prices fluctuateThe avoidance of committing to a fixed rent amount at a time when many production and market variables remain unknown Risks are shared between the owner and the tenant, as are profit opportunitiesOperator - some level of risk protection should costs rise or revenue disappointLandowners are paid in cash - they do not have to be involved in decisions about crop inputs or grain marketing Landowner - an opportunity to benefit financially from higher yields and favorable commodity pricesHow are the producers getting paid? How are flex leases more beneficial/different than other leases? DisadvantagesLandowner - a flex lease can increase their exposure to risk (compared to a fixed cash lease agreement)Operator - higher revenue from increased yields and/or prices is shared with ownerBoth parties - flex leasing greatly increases the contract’s complexityOther QuestionsHow are you marketing this to producers to bring them in? Is there more risk doing a flex lease? What other means are suggested in adopting to reduce the risk? With a flexible lease, how is the payment for rent in advance determined? Does it change the final payment that depends on the actual prices and yields?Determining PriceExpected revenue trigger = expected county yield * projected price * trigger election To establish a trigger, the producer may elect the following deductible options: 110%, 115%, 120%, and 125%Final revenue = Final county yield * harvest price What date is used when the crop may be sold laterAre forward contract prices included? Ep 274Farm4Fun w/ Noah Young - Shiloh Farm

Noah Young grew up the son of two school teachers. Farming was not something he ever thought of doing for a career, but growing up in central Nebraska, it’s tough to not be impacted by agriculture in some way. He grew up helping farmers and seeing how food was produced and the impact agriculture had on his community. From a young age he was intrigued by the fact that his neighbors were feeding the world but the majority of Americans knew nothing about it. The average farmer in the U.S. feeds over 155 people while making up less than 2% of the population. So after receiving his degree in Agribusiness, Young began his journey into the unknown world of farming. When he started “Shiloh Farm” in April of 2020 his goal was to pursue a simpler life for his family. With no experience raising livestock, gardening, or raising chickens, he decided to start a homestead from the ground up. His mission was to learn as much as he could about agriculture while sharing his journey and experience with others. He wanted to give people the chance to see what farming was like up close. His opportunity to share his journey with others came much sooner than expected. In July 2020, his goal of educating people came to fruition when he started using TikTok. With daily facts about chickens, ducks, vegetables, sheep, and anything agriculture related, he finally found the perfect platform to educate others about the joys of farming. This blossomed into a wonderful opportunity to share agriculture with over 125,000 followers. Whether it’s telling people that all chicken eggs start out white or that you’ve been opening pineapples wrong your whole life, these videos have been making people laugh and learn. If there’s a bright spot to this Pandemic it’s that millions of people began growing gardens, buying chickens, and looking for ways to be more self reliant. If they did not have the opportunity to do that, they most certainly began supporting local farmers and ranchers. Looking for ways to support small family businesses as much as possible. That meant a lot of people were in his exact position. Wanting to be self sustainable but having no clue how to start! By sharing his experience with others he hopes to make a positive difference in the homestead community.Future plans involve expanding the farm in hopes that they can have a greater impact on the community and produce food for their neighbors. Young is hoping to add a greenhouse, raised beds, and over 500 chickens in 2021. As well as the addition of sheep, goats, turkeys, and whatever rescue animals they can find! While he is certainly excited to expand the homestead, his ultimate goal is to continue educating people on where their food comes from. There is such a big difference between farm fresh local produce and something you buy at the grocery store. Did you know the apple you buy at a supermarket is on average over 14 months old? His hope is that by sharing these facts he can grow a following so that more people can see that there is so much more to farming than what people see on T.V. At the end of the day if he can get 1 person to get chickens or to start a garden, it will all be worth it.Noah Young is one of those people who believes sharing knowledge is not about giving people something, or getting something from them. Ep 273Understanding the ROI of Cattle Buildings

Cattle BarnsBill Rubis – Vice President at TenCorp, INC In 2010, they designed and built our first deep-pit cattle barn.Exploring the profitability of feeding cattle in confinement settings. As the cattle production industry has evolved over the years, there has been a significant shift to feeding cattle indoors.Just like no two cattle operations are the same, confinement buildings come in all shapes and sizes. Typically, they can be divided into a few broad categories. One major difference is the manure handling style: deep-pit In deep-pit buildings the cattle are on concrete slats (usually covered with rubber mats) and manure is stored underneath the building and pumped annuallybed-pack. With bed-pack buildings there is usually a concrete or earthen floor that is covered with bedding (most commonly shredded cornstalk bales). The other key feature is the roof shape. Cattle buildings usually have one of three roof types: Hoop (a curved roof usually covered by a canvas fabric)Mono-slope (where one eave is higher than the other)Gable (a traditional peaked roof). Mono-slope and gable roofed buildings can be made out of both wood and steel. Why should our listeners look into confinement feeding for cattle?WeatherFeed ConversionWhy better?Consistent feed intakeSpace or Sq FtMore valuable manureWhat are some draw backs from confinement feeding?Large capital investmentAnything else?Let’s now look more indepth to the types of barns you build the most of – the deep-pit barn. What are some benefits over others? The benefits of this type of deep-pit cattle barn include:Reduction in labor expenses: 0.14 hours vs. 0.38 hours in a bed-pack confinement (per head-space/year)Elimination of bedding expensesReduction of building size: stocking density of 22 sf (in a slatted barn), vs. 40 sf (in bed pack)Reduction in manure management expenses – only requires 1 pump/yearIs this true?Increased manure nutrient levelsWhy?Increased cattle comfortHowWhat are the features of TenCorp, Inc. Standard Barns:Gable Roof StructureWith properly designed ridge openings and sidewall height, the gable roof structure provides the ideal ventilation for cattle in every season. Fresh air is drawn in from both sides of the building, and is pulled through the open ridge due to the “stack effect”.Wood-Framed StructureThe wood-framed structure provides superior strength for the cattle barn. The roof system includes 1/2″ plywood and felt paper above the purlins. This eliminates condensation issues that are common with metal building systems.Pen ConfigurationsThe pen sizes are designed to ensure that the cattle are housed as efficiently as possible, while still maintaining adequate bunk space for access to feed. Why does pen size matter? How do we determine pen and barn size? How do we determine bunk space? How do we determine the amount of water access? Now cattle feeders don’t just need a good confinement to maximize their efficiency. We also need to be able to provide top quality feed to the cattle. Why is this important?Every cattle production site needs to be able to properly store commodities for use in their operation. TenCorp, Inc. provides storage solutions for every size of operation — from silage pads, to commodity sheds.Pads-A simple, yet effective solution allows producers to stockpile grain for future use.Bunkers allow more grain to be stored in a smaller area.TenCorp, Inc. works with our customers to determine:Storage capacity needsIdeal width, based on daily usageLength of bunker requiredBunker options included poured-in-place walls, or pre-cast panels.Commodity sheds provide storage capacity for the feed stock needed for mixing in the daily feed rations. Our commodity sheds are overbuilt, in order to withstand the day-to-day use required for feeding cattle.Shed features 8-foot concrete base walls, with 10-foot framed walls above. This provides ample head-height for loading equipment. The number of storage bays and sizes are modified in order to meet our customers’ needs. What else are we missing for our listeners to learn or know about feeding cattle in confinements? What’s the useful life of the buildings? How do we work around regulations locally getting permits to build these? What does the future of EPA regulations or methane emissions look like for farmers?Does this include the use of aerobic digesters?Anything else? Are we working to help the processing end of the cattle industry?Any new plants going up or planned to go up?Contact informationWhat does being successful mean to you?SummaryChallenge Want Farm4Profit Merch?  Custom order your favorite items today!https://farmfocused.com/farm-4profit/ Don’t forget to like the podcast on all platforms and leave a review where ever you listen! Website: www.Farm4Profit.comShareable episode link: https://intro-to-farm4profit.simplecast.comEmail address: [email protected]/Text: 515.207.9640Subscribe to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSR8c1BrCjNDDI_Acku5XqwFollow us on

Ep 263Strong Leadership Habits w/ Steve Sukup

The habits you have today will shape who you become tomorrow. Get strategic about your habits. What sets apart great leaders? Great leaders are fanatically consistent with a few strategic habits. Great leaders are fanatically consistent at doing the things most of us only do occasionally. Habits Great Leaders Have in Common The best leaders aren’t always the smartest, hardest working, or best-connected people. The best leaders intentionally commit to strategic habits that produce their desired results. The Habit of No Snooze How do you get out of bed each morning?Do you wake up naturally (with no alarm) ready to attack the day? Do you get up after your first alarm? Do you wake up to your alarm, hit snooze, wake up again, hit snooze again, and so on?According to a study done by the University of Notre Dame, 57% of people fit in that third category. When you wake up at the right time (with your first alarm or without it,) you’re telling yourself that the first part of your day matters. Pro tip: If you want to sleep better, plan out your day the night before. Going to bed with the next day’s lunch, outfits, or meetings already planned will allow your brain to fully rest, leading to higher-quality sleep. The Habit of Pre-Deciding The basic principle of the habit of pre-deciding is this: Any time you can make a decision ahead of time, make it. Any time you can automate a decision, automate it.Decision fatigue is a very real thing. The more decisions you make in a day, the lower the quality of your decision-making ability So, as often as possible make a decision ahead of time. One easy way to do this is by blocking off regular time on your calendar for your most important tasks. When you make that decision ahead of time, you’re making it easy to become the leader you need to become. The Habit of Doing the Hard-Right In your leadership, you’re always going to face challenges and obstacles. When you face these challenges, you’ll often have two options. The easy-wrong or the hard-right choice. You’ll always be tempted to take the easy way out. Many leaders avoid the Hard-Right because it will make a difficult situation even more difficult in the short term. You’ll never regret doing what’s right, but you’ll often regret doing what’s easy. The Habit of You-First Leadership The natural trajectory of leadership is towards self.I get the credit when things are going well, and I shift the blame when things are going poorly. The habit of You-First Leadership will help you intentionally fight this inclination.Simon Sinek teaches, “The leaders who get the most out of their people are those who care most about their people.” It really matters that you actually care about people. And that care has to start in your heart before your people feel it in the office. But what if you don’t like your team? If you don’t like your team, you’re in one of two situations: 1. You have the wrong people. Unless you inherited your team, your team is a combination of what you’ve created and what you’ve tolerated. 2. You have the right people, but you haven’t led them well. Ep 259Discovering the ROI of Grain Storage

If shiny new grain bins seem to be growing like corn in July on local farms, your eyes are not deceiving you. Numerous reasons exist for a farm operation to add grain storage to its holdings — reasons that affect long-term profitability. “But just like any other strategy, it’s a tool that can help diversify your risk. I’m not suggesting that farmers store all their grain, but maybe store a certain percentage of it, so that it aligns with your bias of the market and what your cash flow needs are.” advantages direct effect to the bottom lineallowing you to run more of your operation on your termsgives you more control. What are ways for farmers to store grain?Farmers have many options for storing their grain including on-farm storage or working with their local elevator. Why Store Grain? -Advantages begin right at harvest.Avoid Historically Low Basis LevelsAs a function of local supply and demand, basis levels vary across geographies and conditions. Basis is simply the difference between the local cash price for your grain and the corresponding futures price on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). Negative BasisPositive BasisWide & Narrow Basis“Having on-farm storage gives producers a way to avoid wide basis levels driven by peak harvest supply,” says Steven Aldridge, Origination Manager for Bunge. “Typically basis strengthens post-harvest, and storage allows you to participate in that.”Crop Conditions/Qualitycrops can also suffer discounting because of other factors, such as quality factors, (e.g. moisture content, damage, or foreign material)One other aspect of storing grain that needs mentioning is grain quality. “You’re storing a perishable product that can be affected by temperature, moisture and pests,” he says. “Keeping the grain in storage without proper monitoring and maintenance could result in ruin. That’s why you need a plan for grain storage and know how marketing that grain aligns with your operation’s financial needs.”Improve Marketing FlexibilityControlling grain storage improves crop-marketing choices in several ways How far is the elevator or co-op from a processor or export terminal? That basis discount affects your crop and those of your neighbors’ equally.Storage gives you many more options than that. With grain safely in storage, an operation’s delivery radius extends dramatically. It allows producers to search for the best opportunity, rather than being forced to sell as-is to the most convenient local entity. The Futures HedgeOn-farm grain storage opens up another important marketing tool that producers can use to manage risk as well as improve their profitability: the futures contract or hedge-to-arrive (HTA)Efficient OperationsTime is money” could not ring truer than for farmers during harvest. Delays stemming from weather, transportation time or equipment availability translate to losses in the field or added costs.the local elevator may only accept grains during certain hours or force trucks to wait in queue, causing undesired down-time in the field. There is nothing worse than downtime during great harvest weatherIf you can haul to your own storage bins, they’re likely within close proximity, cutting down the number of trucks, drivers and fuel required. This keeps your combine running, making the most of prime harvest days.A delay in harvest could create opportunities for losses from frost, wildlife feeding, wind gusts, stalk deterioration, pests, and fungus all can whittle away at a standing crop.ROI and Recouping InvestmentCan I afford to build it? OR How can I afford not to?To get a good idea of the potential return on investment look at tracking the three- to five-year average on basis. That history can show you trends demonstrating basis-level changes on-farm storage can capitalize upon.Use the average in your area divided into the costs of your project to predict your return on investmentOverall, four to five years as a typical expectation for an investment in additional storage to capture a return on your investment (ROI)The U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency runs a program called the Farm Storage Facility Loan Program that typically amortizes the investment over seven years.Once we build the storage should we track the actual ROI?Why would knowing this be valuable?Investment in Qualitymechanical breakdowns create delays that can force harvesting in less-then-ideal conditions. Quality and reliable facilities reduce the risk for break downs and delaysCommercial elevators have two moisture issues to consider when buying grain safety and quality: In a confined space, grain containing too much moisture heats up, potentially damaging the stored grain and also putting the elevator itself at riskTo get grain to optimum conditions they may charge for shrink in addition to drying charges, and these discounts can quickly eat away at your profits. Additional Comments?Without on-farm storage, this opportunity doesn’t exist for a producerDealing with the unpredictability of na
