Ep 511EFR 511: The Self-Employed Mindset and Why Now is the Best Time Ever for Creatives with Jeffrey Shaw
Jeffrey Shaw is a small business consultant, sought-after speaker, and author of Lingo and The Self-Employed Life. From selling eggs door-to-door at fourteen to gaining a reputation as one of the most preeminent portrait photographers in the United States, Jeffrey has lived a varied and colorful life with only one thing in common: He's never, ever worked for a boss other than himself! Listen in as Jeffrey explains why discovering "the intersection of meaning and marketability" is key to finding success as a self-employed professional. He breaks down the three-element "self-employed ecosystem" that he writes about in The Self-employed Life; namely, personal development, business strategies, and daily habits that create consistent mindsets. As every crisis deepens our humanity, Jeffrey believes there is a call for businesses to be more compassionate, empathetic, and inclusive, now more than ever. He shares how he sees companies redesigning the workforce to accommodate the value-shifts of the last year-and-a-half. Follow Jeffrey @jeffreyshaw Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights What is the very first thing you need to know once you've decided to step into the self-employed life? Since the beginning of the pandemic, which aspects of one's personal development have become more crucial than ever to focus on? What does the future of the workplace look like, not just physically, but from a cultural level as well? There's never been a better time in history to be a creative. Jeffrey shares how the self-employed creative can thrive in today's market. Ep 510EFR 510: Three Factors That Compromise Your Immune System, Using Fasting to Lose Weight, Boost Energy, and Improve Sleep and How to Reduce Household Toxins with Dr. Mindy Pelz
In 2012, Ken Cook, President of Environmental Working Group (EMG) presented a 22-minute talk called "10 Americans". In it, he shares EMG's research on ten individuals across the country to determine how dependent a person's toxic load was on where they lived. What they found was that these ten Americans had over 200 cancer-causing chemicals in them that could potentially lead to infertility, thyroid problems, and autoimmune conditions. Other than the toxins themselves, there was only one commonality shared by every individual in this study: All ten of these Americans were still in the womb. A decade later, we're being barraged by more harmful chemicals in our everyday lives than ever before. What can we do to start lowering our "toxic bucket" today? Dr. Mindy Pelz, DC is a holistic health and fasting expert. Her tips on fasting and alternative health can be found on her YouTube channel as well as the podcast she founded and hosts, The Resetter Podcast. Dr. Pelz is the author of three bestselling books The Menopause Reset, The Reset Factor, and The Reset Kitchen. Dr. Pelz is also the founder of Family Life Wellness (formerly Family Life Chiropractic), a biohacking center in the Bay Area focused on speeding up the healing process and maximizing performance. Listen in as Dr. Pelz shares how to lower your toxic bucket in the modern world, how fasting can nip chronic disease in the bud, why experiencing symptoms such as fever or mucus buildup is actually your body's innate healing mechanism in action, and why addressing immunocompromisation is far more important to ending the pandemic than vaccines and lockdowns. Follow Dr. Pelz @dr.mindypelz Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights Toxins are seeping into our environment and into our bodies, contributing to rising infertility. What exactly are the reasons for this alarming rise in infertility? What is our "toxic bucket" and how do we keep it low as we live our day-to-day lives? Dr. Pelz explains how fasting can overcome the toxins that barrage us daily and contribute to weight loss, mental energy, clarity, and sleep. Dr. Pelz speaks on the body's innate ability to heal itself. What are the three primary factors that lead to immunocompromisation and how can addressing these factors bring the pandemic to an end? Ep 509EFR 509: Why Everyone Can Benefit From Taking Collagen with Charlie Bailes
What makes collagen such a unique protein and why should you care? For starters, collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, making up about a third of your body's protein composition. It's known as the "glue" that holds everything together, and once you hit 25, your body's ability to create collagen begins to weaken; hence the "aches and pains" of old age. But it doesn't have to be this way. Today's guest, Charlie Bailes, says that he is in better shape at 34 than he was at 24, mainly thanks to incorporating more collagen into his diet. But what really opened his eyes to the power of collagen was its healing effect on his daughter Vivian, who at 1-and-a-half years old, routinely became sick. After introducing collagen into her diet (alongside other healthy lifestyle choices such as cutting out gluten, vegetable oils, and sugar), Vivian, who was told by multiple pulmonologists that she would be on an inhaler for the rest of her life, now only uses her inhaler about two times a year. Collagen had changed the lives of Charlie and his family, and he wanted to pay it forward. In 2018, Charlie started CB Supplements, founded on the three pillars of premium product, education, and customer appreciation. Ep 508EFR 508: Creating a Foundation of Healthy Habits for Long-Term Wellness with Eric Champ
"It all begins with creating a foundation of healthy habits which can lead to long-term wellness." Eric Champ is a Marine Corps veteran who currently owns and operates Champ City Holistic Fitness and a 14-by-7 mobile gym. He is living his passion, but it didn't come overnight. In fact, there was a point in his life when Eric didn't even know if he would live to see the day he turned 40 years old. While in the Marine Corps, holistic health and wellness was the last thing on Eric's list of priorities. He partied almost every night, loved his drink, and eventually ballooned up to over 250 pounds. He knew deep inside that something was horribly wrong with his lifestyle, but he never could never admit it just because he was too afraid to face himself. But the day inevitably came when Eric had to come to terms with what was happening, when he had to engage in "that showdown with myself". He made a fateful decision, while gazing at his deteriorating body in front of the mirror, that he would turn his life around. That decision, coupled with his wife Katie's determination to keep him accountable, drove Eric to keep his eyes firmly rooted on his new path. The next morning, Eric grabbed his shorts, headed to the YMCA down the road, and walked a mile on the treadmill. And so began a journey that would later inspire him to launch a fitness platform that would quickly grow into a thriving worldwide business. The cost of pet healthcare has been rising in recent years and there seems to be no end in sight. What's more, the best technology and the best care have mostly been available only to those who can afford them. Ep 506EFR 506: Holding Fitness Trends Accountable and Why More Training Does Not Equal Better Results with Krysta Huber
The fitness world was dramatically shaken up during the past year-and-a-half—and with it our own goals. With gyms and other fitness establishments finally opening up, how do we get back on track and move forward in an industry that has transformed in so many ways? Krysta is a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach who is the founder of The Fitness FYX brand and the FYX Studio platform. She is the host of THE FYX podcast, a show which covers "all things fitness, nutrition, love, loss, personal and professional relationships, entrepreneurship, being a damn millennial, and embracing that stereotype." Listen in as Krysta gives us her thoughts on getting unstuck and taking proactive steps toward your health and fitness goals in the new normal. She explains the double-edged sword that is the ease of becoming certified as a coach nowadays. She says that this means personal accountability has become one of the biggest keys to breaking through the noise as a trainer—especially boutique ones like herself. Krysta says that trainers now have the responsibility to perform a self-audit to ensure continuous improvement in their specialties. For both trainers and trainees, she reminds us that more training doesn't necessarily equal better training and to not become distracted by the increasing complexity and the bells and whistles of the modern fitness industry. Ep 505EFR 505: Improving Your Self-Esteem, Tapping Into Your Masculine Energy, and Becoming a Professional Man with Angelo Sisco
One of the great attributes of masculine energy is that it pushes us forward—it drives us to advance in a positive direction. But without self-esteem backing up that masculine energy, we may still be able to move forward, but in a negative direction. In today's episode, Angelo Sisco of Alpha Hippie talks all things manhood and the oftentimes elusive road to unlocking the professional man within you. So many of us are obsessed with blazing a trail that, when we look back, we realize we've forgotten our heart. On the other hand, there are those of us who live in our hearts and their thoughts without ever taking action. Listen in as Angelo explains why the first step to embracing your masculinity is actually in nurturing your feminine energy (or what he calls "grace"). He tells us that the lack of understanding and, by extension, the inadequate integration of one's masculine and feminine energies is the cause for many of the issues we face in the world today. Ep 504EFR 504: Your Mind is Not Your Brain and How to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking with Dr. Caroline Leaf, PhD
"You can transition from just being aware of your chaotic and toxic thoughts to being empowered to catch these thoughts in their early stages, manage them. From there, you can improve your overall peace and wellbeing." Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist who for almost 40 years has been doing research into the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. Dr. Leaf is the host of the podcast Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess and the author of the book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple, Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking. We talk in-depth about the book in today's conversation. Her overall message? You are not your brain. Your mind, in fact, controls your neurophysiology. When you understand your mind, you can begin to drive change in your brain and in your body. It's all under your control. She says that, contrary to popular belief, emotional and even physiological symptoms that result from stress are not the result of an irreversibly "broken" brain. Rather, it's a question of your paradigms or the narrative lens that you see the world through. "Because our brain is neuroplastic and we make a million new cells every second, we have a lot of power to influence and change" the stories we tell ourselves. Listen in and learn how you can become empowered to manage your "messy mind" so that you can then give the podium to the "wise mind". Ep 503EFR 503: The Power of Movement and The Will to Live and Courtenay Turner
Being grateful for the cards you were dealt from birth—whether you label them as "good" or "bad"—is the key to thriving in life despite the challenges (whether physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc.) unique to you. That gratitude allows you to contribute some good to the world because you're pouring from an overflowing reservoir. But if your perspective is that of lack and resentfulness, your reservoir is depleted; and then your chances of contributing any good to the world are nil. Today's guest, Courtney Turner, believes that everyone has the ability to shape their destiny, and it starts with discovering that potential in you. "A lot of the time," says Courtenay, "when people are filled with despair or depression or anxiety, it's a lack of hope. And lack of hope stems from feeling like you have no control over your future. But the truth is, we don't know what the future holds." By remembering the things that we have overcome or succeeded at in the past, we can pinpoint our strengths, be grateful for them, and then use those gifts to chart a brighter path going forward. Ep 501EFR 501: How Your Mindset May Be Keeping You From Your Weightloss Goal with Lauren Hubert
"Let's put less emphasis on losing 10, 20, 30 pounds and more on what hot, healthy, and confident mean to you." This is the motto that Lauren Hubert decided to embody as 2021 rolled out. But getting to the point where she could proclaim and live out this mindset for herself was a journey plagued with doubt and insecurity. After gaining nearly 20 pounds as a freshman at Florida State University, Lauren was determined to shed the weight and regain her self-confidence. Unfortunately, she ended up going down a destructive path defined by hours of running, an extreme calorie deficit, and closing herself off from all social events for fear of getting tempted to eat the "wrong" foods. It took a couple of years studying to become a registered dietician before Lauren realized just how toxic her mindset toward health and wellness was up till then. In 2019, with a renewed purpose, Lauren established The Sorority Nutritionist. Listen in as Lauren touches on the value of patience and setting expectations as we create our fitness goals; how to manage failure, avoid burnout, and maintain our positivity as we strive for these goals; not letting yourself be defined by your failures and weaknesses; and how to overcome the two biggest struggles with health and wellness that most people go through today. Ep 500EFR 500: Why Resistance Training is the Most Effective Form of Exercise for Health and Longevity with Sal Di Stefano
Statistics show that the majority of Americans are now obese, in spite of the fact the fitness industry is bigger today than at any other point in time. Sal Di Stefano of Mind Pump Media dives deep into this alarming disconnect and goes through the laundry list of issues that emerge as a result of poor health both on an individual level and on a society level. In 2021, Sal published the book The Resistance Training Revolution, which details his observations and lessons learned after over 20 years in the fitness world. Frustrated at how the industry has failed to adequately address an obesity crisis that only continues to get worse, Sal wrote the book to tackle some of the common myths and misconceptions around health and fitness. In particular, he hopes to change the mainstream paradigm regarding resistance training, which he believes is "the best form of exercise to burn fat, boost metabolism, and achieve health benefits you cannot obtain from other forms of exercise." "I made the book to specifically focus on trying to get people to adopt a form of exercise that has now been proven through study, but also one that I've seen through experience to be the most effective form of exercise for all of the health problems that we tend to run into in modern society—everything from obesity to diabetes to dementia to Alzheimer's to loss of mobility to hormone issues. I'm trying to change the stigma that surrounds this form of exercise." Sal goes on to explain why cardio and tracking calories burned during exercise are two of the worst things to focus on when trying to lose weight. He then gives his thoughts on the dangers of the "self love" trend and why you should never conflate "self image" with "body image". Ep 499EFR 499: Emotional Honesty in Relationships and Creating Conscious Friendships May and Chase Chewning, and Kara and Caleb Campbell
Chase and May are joined today by Kara and Caleb Campbell. Kara is a celebrity event planner and human connection facilitator, and Caleb is a West Point graduate, former US Army officer, former NFL player, and former US Olympic bobsled athlete. Today, Chase, May, Kara, and Caleb talk all things relationships and the importance and necessity of continuous growth and maintaining a space for you to thrive in. They speak on how this all allows for the introduction of deep, meaningful relationships into your life as well as the strengthening of the relationships you already have. They also dive deep into emotional honesty as being fundamental to progression (or regression, if you lack it). Emotional honesty, they say, serves as a guide that allows you to filter the friendships and other relationships that serve you from those that don't. That honesty also helps you accept the ease of falling in love and finding your person. Finally, they reflect on why your perspective of events, particularly challenging ones, is the key factor to your getting through them while taking away valuable lessons for growth. Ep 498EFR 498: Signs You Are Experiencing Burnout and May Not Realize It and How to Ditch Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms with Wendy McCallum
Wendy McCallum is a burnout and balance coach, author, and speaker. In this conversation, she recounts her own struggles dealing with a high-stress lifestyle in the past, as well as the common signs and symptoms of burnout. She offers practical tools that anyone can use to both recover from burnout and prevent it from happening again in the future. She talks about unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol, food, and social media and how we can learn to rely less on these crutches and become more present. Wendy also gives her thoughts on the unique challenges that many of us experienced in 2020 and continue to face in 2021. One of her observations at the tail-end of the pandemic has been the emergence of a "third shift" in the lives of working professionals. If our "first shift" represents our actual career and our "second shift" refers to the people under our care—whether our children or aging parents—our new "third shift" is helping to orchestrate or manage schooling from home. This, of course, is on top of the overall anxiety all of us have felt in the past year-and-a-half. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns have led to a significantly higher stress load on the average human being. Burnout is one of the symptoms of this stress. Whether one came into 2020 physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy, or already overworked, almost everybody has had to deal with exhaustion. (On the other hand, a very small minority—mainly business owners and employers—have found opportunities to become flexible and even more productive in their work.) Wendy reflects on her own experience with burnout and how she learned to create a life that she no longer needed to escape from. As with any journey of self-improvement, weight loss starts and ends with mindset. "Stop thinking of food as 'good' or 'bad'," says today's guest, Carter Good. "There's just food and the context in which it is eaten." The struggle to form healthy nutrition and lifestyle habits comes down to the stories that you tell yourself around every decision you make, big or small. Carter himself attributes his past obesity to "using food as an emotional suppressant." Carter goes on to say, "It's really about reframing things and getting people to a place where they don't feel like they have to make better choices and they have to exercise, but that they get to do these things." Together with his strong-willed parents, Logan was able to connect with one of the most sought-after neurosurgeons in the world, who thankfully managed to extract the egg-sized tumor. But just when Logan thought he was in the clear, he was given ten years to live with no word of hope whatsoever. Even after receiving his "death sentence", Logan soldiered on, determined to find a solution. He found it when a long-time mentor encouraged him to take up the ketogenic diet, which at the time was still widely unheard of. Logan went all-in and not only found a new lease on life, but also decided to share his experiences with the world on social media. In spite of a barrage of haters who doubted his story and the legitimacy of his so-called "keto diet", there were enough people who were inspired by his journey for Logan to realize that he could monetize his growing brand. Even this wasn't the end of Logan's trials. Listen in as he describes the lowest point in his journey so far—even beyond the diagnosis—as well as his betrayal at the hands of a man he once called "mentor". But Logan also shares why, when all is said and done, cancer was the greatest thing that ever happened to him, having led him down the path to discovering his purpose and impacting thousands of lives (and rapidly counting) for the better. Ep 491EFR 491: How to Make a Career Pivot to Pursue Your True Passion with Sean and Dala McDevitt
Up till only a few years ago, Sean and Dala McDevitt never saw themselves leading a fast-growing community of wellness enthusiasts with 19 coaches on staff that has led to over 2800 people completely transforming their lives. The couple had always had a passion for health and fitness (they actually met at a gym) even back when they worked traditional jobs (Sean was in sales and marketing, and Dala was a labor and delivery nurse). In 2016, Dala set up her Instagram profile @dalalovesdumbbells to share how she found and healed herself through fitness, with the hope of inspiring and elevating others as well. Monetizing the brand was not on her radar; that is, until her budding community began referring to themselves with the hashtag #DLDNation. Two years later, Sean and Dala decided to quit full-time employment to fully dedicate themselves to #DLDNation. There was nothing easy about both Sean and Dala leaving their traditional career and plunging headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship; specifically in the health and wellness coaching space. What's more, neither Sean nor Dala were "certified" trainers or nutritionists. Listen in as the McDevitts go down memory lane and speak on lessons learned since their life-changing decision to become online trainers exclusively through the #DLDNation brand, including how they navigated the many challenges of running a coaching business brought on by the pandemic. Ep 490EFR 490: Breaking the Cannabis Stigma and Achieving Homeostasis with Plant Medicine with John Malanca
John Malanca was inspired to start United Patients Group in 2011 after a totally unexpected episode when his father-in-law Stan was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer along with a brain tumor on his brain stem. The situation seemed hopeless, seeing their father going from being a seemingly healthy 77-year-old one day, to being given a mere two weeks to live the next. "When you're diagnosed," says John, recalling those moments of desperation, "you'll try anything." That "anything", as fate would have it, was cannabis. They started by giving Stan THC capsules infused with coconut oil in order to get him to start eating again. It worked. A day later, he was back at work on a computer. Nine months after the diagnosis, John's family got an email that simply stated "no evidence of recurrent disease." That was in 2011. Today, Stan is alive and well. Listen in as John shares the exciting journey that emerged out of that harrowing experience. He describes the many benefits of the cannabis plant and, by extension, naturopathic modalities, and how these can help bring the body back to homeostasis. Ep 489EFR 489: Why Male Fertility is Radically Declining, Sperm Testing, and How to Preserve Your Legacy with Khaled Kteily
"I don't know any guy who grew up dreaming of starting a male fertility company," says today's guest, Khaled Kteily, before proceeding to share the story of why he, in fact, decided to do just that. "There are moments in your life that sometimes take you down unexpected paths." Khaled's own unexpected path began with a freak accident in Tulsa, Oklahoma during his time as a health and life sciences consultant. One day, after a coffee run during a road trip with colleagues, the car was forced to do a sudden break, causing the scalding hot beverages to spill all over Khaled's lap. His skin was ripped clean off and he suffered second-degree burns that took a month-and-a-half to heal. Months later, a close friend of Khaled's found out he had cancer, and so he froze his sperm before beginning a chemotherapy process that would likely leave him infertile. Inspired, Khaled visited a sperm bank to do the same. Frustrated by the awkward and clinical process involved in sperm freezing, alongside the alarming lack of conversations around declining male fertility rates, Khaled sought to make a change. This was the spark that led to the founding of Legacy in 2018 and its release of the first product which allows men to test and freeze their sperm in the comfort of their own home, and obtain personalized recommendations based on their results. Ep 484EFR 484: Natural Ways to Improve Your Balance, Performance, Recovery, and Sleep with Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran of beam
Born from the aches and pains that come with the territory for every professional athlete, Beam was co-founded by Matt Lombardi and Kevin Moran. As avid crossfit competitors, ironman triathletes, marathoners, the two decided to search high and low for an all-natural remedy that met their personal wellness standards. Their choice? CBD. In this conversation, Matt and Kevin go in-depth on what they call the "Beam 4"—the four pillars of health embodied by the Beam brand. These are balance, performance, recovery, and sleep. The Beam 4 was conceived out of the desire to cater to the needs of both professional athletes and the general wellness consumer. Listen in as Matt and Kevin explain how they developed Beam's current lineup of products. Some of the topics we cover include how they collect and interpret data, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to improve the efficacy of Beam's sleep product, dream; how the focus, elevate, and clarity, products boost your energy without the crash; and why they decided to separate "recovery" and "sleep" into two different categories. Ep 483EFR 483: How Your Darkest Days Can Be Your Catalyst for a New Identity with Taylor Ellis
Every single one of our habits, good and bad, spring out of a thought process that has been (and continues to be) molded and shaped by how we interpret our day-to-day experiences. If we want to change any negative aspect of our lives, whether it be around our physical or mental health, how we communicate with others, or manage our time or money, it all starts with becoming self-aware of our own deep-seated beliefs and paradigms, then reframing our interpretation of the events that formed those beliefs and paradigms. Listen in as Taylor Ellis shares how to nip destructive habits in the bud by catching negative thoughts as they come, and how to establish habits that are in alignment with the identity of the person that we want to be. She talks about her previous struggles with an eating disorder and how she turned memories of her darkest days into inspiration for a brighter tomorrow. Ep 481EFR 481: Soft Tissue Hygiene, Improving Total Body Recovery, and Disrupting the Health Technology World with Jim Huether of HyperIce
There's been a rising trend in recent years of using technology to better understand and optimize the human body. Through these tools we track, tweak, and train not only our wellness but also our ability to perform, and even use these tools as a means to increase our lifespan. We can now do all these things through the lens of the "quantified self". Today's guest explains how his company, Hyperice, has taken the tools and technologies used by the world's most elite athletes and brought them to the masses to help them "warm up quicker, recover faster, and move better." Listen in as Jim Huether shares the approach Hyperice uses to continuously develop technology in order to more precisely meet the needs of the human body as we come to better understand how it functions. In particular, he touches on their new HyperSmart ecosystem which pulls activity data from their wearable devices and provides wholly personalized recommendations based on that data. He talks about how the technology guides users toward behavior change in the most natural, human way possible, as opposed to the overly restrictive, one-size-fits-all approach that many coaches take. Ep 480EFR 480: Coming Home to Your Body, Building Healthy Relationships With Food, and the Power of Human Connection with Kara Campbell
Relationships isn't normally the first word that pops to mind when we talk about food. Today's guest illustrates what it truly means to embody our relationship with food and defines "healthy eating" in terms that go way beyond calories, macros, and choosing so-called "good" foods. When we're in tune with what we're eating, food allows us to connect to ourselves, to other people, and to the world on a visceral and emotional level. Listen in as Kara Campbell shares how she came to embrace the connective power of food at an early age, just from sitting around the table with her family at dinner time every night. She explains how this evolved into the idea that dining with others and asking intentional questions leads to friends and strangers alike mirroring pieces of themselves back to one another through conversation. She then unpacks the topic of intuitive eating and why most people fail to reconnect to their bodies and simply trust that they know what they need. Kara then talks about how her upbringing within purity culture had a profoundly negative impact on her relationship with food and why women growing up in such an environment almost always have body image issues and destructive eating habits. Finally, Kara touches on why our body is our wisest teacher and the surprising benefits beyond the physical that one experiences once they are able to repair their relationship with food. Savannah Lynx is a singer/songwriter and fitness model. In this conversation, she discusses how she successfully made the leap from the world of pageantry into music and entertainment. Savannah reflects on how singing and performance had always been her calling. She hearkens back to her college days at Fordham, remembering that "without music as the centerpoint of my life, I really lost it. I wasn't engaged in class. I wasn't excited. I wasn't working out. It was the keystone that put my life together and made me realize who I was and who I wanted to be." At the age of 21, she was inspired—to her parents' disappointment—to put her college education on hold, fly from New York to L.A., and pursue her music career seriously. Along the way, her ever-present passion for fitness helped her win the coveted titles of Miss Las Vegas International Model Search and Miss Swimsuit USA International. Listen in as Savannah dives deep into her mindset toward success in both her career and life as a whole. Ep 471EFR 471: The Dangers of Mineral Deficiency and How to Improve Nutrient Absorption in the Body with Barton Scott
Barton Scott is a chemical engineer and nutritionist. In 2025, he founded Upgraded Formulas, a company offering a line of supplements "that are 100% bioavailable and are absorbed better by the body than any other brand on the market today." Our bodies, Barton claims, only "absorb about 25% or less" of most supplements on the market. This fact, he says, is less telling of what is and isn't in most of today's supplements and more of a reflection of how inefficient our bodies are at absorbing the nutrients in them. In fact, this inefficiency is only going to get worse for many as certain trends of modern living continue to wreak havoc on their gut health. From bad diets to excess drinking to living stressful lives, a variety of factors that too many people today are familiar with contribute to gut dysfunction. "Because of that," continues Barton, "I knew that trying to heal the gut was not going to be enough." Listen in as Barton reflects on the personal experiences which would lead to the founding of Upgraded Formulas. Ep 466EFR 466: Hot and Cold Therapy, Breathwork, and Mitigating Environmental Stressors with MindStrong Project
Harvey Martin and Matt Arends of the MindStrong Project speak on the modalities used at the MindStrong Project, particularly heat and cold therapy, as tools that "bring you back to yourself faster", that help anybody recover and reach a refreshed state of consciousness in the most natural way possible. Their work, ultimately, is around helping a person, through their own physiology, take control. The MindStrong Project believes in "respecting the animal" in our humanity while exercising the power that puts us at the top of the food chain, namely "advancing our cognition". As Harvey and Matt explain, advancing our cognition tends to be prioritized at the expense of respecting the animal. Their team uses the modalities that they do in response to the environmental stressors of the modern world in an effort to prepare and allow the body to recover from those stressors. The MindStrong Project was founded in 2017 to shape the world of human performance by improving the physical, mental, and emotional capacities of top performers through tried-and-tested natural breath, movement, and mindset protocols. Their team of five combines foundational nature-based training with industry leading strength, movement, conditioning, and nutrition programs. Ep 464EFR 464: Shut Up and Sit: Finding Silence and All the Life-Changing Magic that Comes with It with Yedda Stancil
The secret to mindfulness, according to Yedda Stancil, is understanding that "beliefs are not who we are." She stresses the importance of self-awareness to be able to catch the thoughts that feed into our belief system, because our truths define neither us nor the people around us. Chase and Yedda look back on the evolution of their respective careers. They reflect on the various opportunities they've faced and the many challenges to their beliefs over time, and how these experiences gradually shaped their purpose and their truth—what Yedda calls "the awakening of my narrative." Yedda Stancil is a consciousness coach and highly sought-after consultant for both individuals and organizations. She is the founder of Fantastically Fit! Ep 463EFR 463: Pain Science and Bridging the Gap Between Muscle Therapies with Sam Visnic
Sam Visnic believes staying on the cutting edge is the key to FASTER results. Learning new techniques, research, & integrating the best approaches to both clinical massage therapy and movement re-education are essential to understanding pain. He is also the owner of the Visnic Center For Integrated Health, whose focus is "on assisting clients with achieving the highest levels of health and vitality through an integrated approach." He quickly found his niche in corrective exercise and decided to become a massage therapist subspecializing in neuromuscular therapist. He describes the trajectory of his career and his expertise in his field as ever-evolving as knowledge about the human body expands over time. He quips, "What happens is, the more you learn in this field, the more challenging your clients get." Ep 461EFR 461: Perform, Adapt, Evolve - The Three Pillars of Human Optimization with Jeff Byers
How do we not just train harder, but also maximize everything around it including the mind, body, and soul? This is the question that drives Jeff Byers, a former NFL player and the current CEO of Amp Human, which offers innovative products that help athletes push the limits on their performance, adaptation, and recovery. With an interest in both sports and entrepreneurship from an early age, Jeff always harbored an interest in finding creative ways to push his boundaries for growth as a human. "I was always thinking about the little things I could do to get better," he says. "I tried to use my brain to work smarter than always just work harder." After retiring from the NFL, Jeff worked for a few years in the finance space before joining an early-stage biotech startup in late 2015. This company had discovered a way to deliver pharmaceuticals through the skin, bypassing the GI system which often limits the body's ability to optimally absorb vitamins and minerals taken orally. Not long after joining the company, Jeff and one of his partners developed a broad vision for a business offering products specifically formulated to optimize human performance, a space in which they saw, at the time, a huge gap in the market. Listen in as Jeff talks all things human performance and optimization and why he refers to it as a "broad spectrum". He also discusses the benefits of Amp Human's flagship product, PR Lotion, and its newly released D+ Lotion.
