Ep 541EFR 541: Trading Addiction for Fitness and Finding True Inner Strength with John Wolf
In today's conversation, John Wolf shares a journey that saw him emerge from the depths of grief and loss to undergo a holistic transformation that ultimately led him to be the Chief Fitness Officer at Onnit. Having lost many of the people closest to him early in his life, John quickly found himself descending down a path of drug addiction. He talks about the years of inner work that he did (and continues to do) to maintain his self-worth, as well as the outer work he underwent to rebuild his body and indirectly build stronger belief systems as a result. John rediscovered his passion for fitness and martial arts down the road. Trading one "addiction" for another, John saw exercise as a way to continually reforge and optimize not only his body, but his entire being. In training his clients at Onnit, John uses an approach he calls "conscious coaching" that leads them into a state of flow "where skill and effort intersect." To John, "ever forward" is a matter of maintaining this flow, of staying laser-focused on your purpose while staying receptive to continuous learning and growth. Ep 539EFR 539: The Science of Paying Attention and How to Develop a Peak Mind in 12 Minutes a Day with Dr. Amishi Jha, PhD
Studies show that, when performing any given task, we're giving our attention to that task only half the time. Yet, as our guest explains, this is by design. Because we are overwhelmed with information (i.e. senses) every time we make a decision, our brains pay attention to be able to home in on the most important information we need at that particular moment. Listen in as Dr. Amisha Jha does a deep dive into the nature of attention and the three factors that contribute to (and deplete) our "attentional gas tank". She explains how to cultivate a peak mind through mindfulness practices, and even shares the 12-minute daily exercise anybody can do to embody the same state of mindfulness as that of special operators in the military. Dr. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami and the author of Peak Mind. She serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. Her TED Talk, "How to Tame Your Wandering Mind", has garnered over five million views. Ep 538EFR 538: Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy for PTSD and Mental Health Treatment
In this solo episode, Chase gives his thoughts on ketamine-assisted psychotherapy and his own life-changing sessions as Field Trip Health. It was through the various studies conducted through Field Trip Health that Chase was truly exposed to the world of ketamine and its enhancing benefits to the psychotherapeutic process. What was especially impactful for him was learning about the almost curative effects of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy on servicemembers suffering from PTSD, severe anxiety, and depression. After sifting through the research as well as hearing from the actual healthcare professionals working at Field Trip Health, Chase came to the conclusion that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is the future of healthcare as a whole, considering the trajectory of your life is largely downstream from your mental health. Listen in as Chase offers his advice to those who, like himself, are exploring the world of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and why he believes so strongly in leaning into what feels right on your unique wellness journey. He reflects back on his two, incredibly profound ketamine sessions at Field Trip Health, and how those two sessions gave Chase "years of [therapy] work in about an hour." Ep 537EFR 537: Spiritual Explorations in the Pursuit of the Meaning of Life with Doug Cartwright
Do you ever wonder why we exist here on planet Earth? With all the pressure and messaging from society and religion to be a certain way, have nice things, make more money, and reach a certain status, it's often hard for us to realize the essence of being human, which is that our worth and power lie within us. Best-selling author Doug Cartwright has learned that "if you're using something external to solve an internal problem, you're never going to get fulfilled." The truth is, you're worthy of infinite love, peace, and joy just because you're alive. Your worth is not dependent on anything but your existence. That's kind of a relief, isn't it? Though getting to a place where you're living a deep, rich, meaningful life isn't an easy journey, it's a journey worth embarking on. So… Holy Shit, We're Alive… Now What? Behind the curtain, our gut is responsible for putting our body into working order. As it breaks down the foods we eat, our gut absorbs nutrients that support our body's functions — from energy production to hormone balance, skin health to mental health, and even toxin and waste elimination. The vast majority of our immune system is made up in our gut, so shouldn't' we be treating it better? Ep 535EFR 535: What is Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy and Using Ketamine to Treat Mental Health with Ronan Levy
Ronan Levy is a pioneer in the therapeutic psychedelics industry. He is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Field Trip Health. With centres opening across North America, Field Trip Health helps people to heal and heighten their engagement with the world via the healing modality of psychedelics. "There's doubt about it. We are in a psychedelic renaissance," says Ronan, referring to the recent dramatic realignment of mainstream views around traditional medicine. Calling it "a massive change in the global zeitgeist", this paradigm shift goes beyond health and wellness, reflecting a change in how we view emotions and even spirituality. Contributing heavily to this revolution is the mental health crisis that had already been on the rise for years but was further aggravated by the pandemic for the past year-and-a-half. Citing "significant humanitarian and economic implications", Ronan says that "depression and anxiety disorders are going to become the leading global burden of disease, meaning they will cost the global economy more than any other disease out there, primarily from lost productivity." With these realities in mind, Ronan dives deep into the history, science, and psychological and pro-social benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy. He speaks on the common, decades-long misconceptions surrounding this subject, and the groundbreaking research done on ketamine and psilocybin that, if rediscovered in the world of conventional medicine, may become a key factor in eradicating not just the current mental health crisis, but many of the social and environmental ills we face today as well. Ep 534EFR 534: What to Look For in Natural Herbal Remedies with Nina Mullen
With more and more research emerging around the long-term risks associated with traditional over-the-counter brands, says Nina Mullen, "we're at a specific moment where mainstream consumers are more aware of the risks and just want to find holistic solutions." She adds that not only naturopathic doctors, but even conventional medical professionals are starting to take notice of these disconcerting trends associated with Big Pharma. Nina is the Co-Founder of Hilma. The brand was launched in 2019 with three products, each of which covers its own unique category: 1) An immune support blend; 2) An upset stomach relief for occasional heartburn, antacid, and digestion; and 3) A head tension relief. Natural, clean label products have taken center-stage in virtually every consumer category, from consumables, beauty, household cleaners, and personal care. However, the medicine cabinet continues to be stuck in the past with most being stocked with the usual OTC legacy brands like Airborne, Emergen-C, or Tums. Hilma aims to disrupt this area by introducing preventative, long-term, and all-natural herbal options for everyday health needs to the mainstream consumer. Ep 533EFR 533: How to Make Your Inner Health Match Your Outer Health with Dr. Avanti Kumar Singh, MD
Our outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world, and optimal health is all about adopting the right habits that support those two worlds. It all starts with the self-awareness and openness to change embodied in Ayurvedic medicine. It's a healing system which teaches us that change is an intrinsic quality in nature, and so why shouldn't we see that reality of continuous change in ourselves? In other words, Ayurveda teaches us to turn to nature for wisdom on how we, as human beings, should discern what's best for our life. When we experience symptoms of any kind, whether internally or externally, it is an indicator that we are not in harmony with the world around us, or with ourselves. From how we've been eating and sleeping to how we've been managing our relationships and career—all of these things either support or weaken our health. Listen in and learn how we can adopt the principles of Ayurveda to take full control over our life and achieve optimal health. Dr. Avanti is an internationally recognized speaker and thought leader in Ayurveda. She works with women (and men) who are ready to take back their health and replenish their mental, physical, and emotional energy so they can live a vibrant life filled with more joy, meaning and purpose. Ep 530EFR 530: COVID Vaccination - What Does the Science Say and Is Natural Immunity Real with Dr. Jonathan Baktari, MD
Today's conversation is a sobering deep dive into the highly controversial but crucial subject that is the COVID-19 vaccine, featuring Jonathan Baktari MD. Dr. Baktari is the CEO of e7 Health, a Las Vegas-based company focused on preventative health and wellness. He kicks off the conversation with a high-level explanation of exactly what a vaccine is. The goal of a vaccine, he says, is to take advantage of the immune system's strengths by "tricking" the body. The body is injected with a portion of a germ, whether that germ is a virus or bacteria. The dose is small enough to get the body to detect the germ, thereby training the immune system to become efficient at fighting it while minimizing the damage it could have done to the body if the germ were "whole". Dr. Baktari and Chase go on to unpack the trickiest questions the world is now faced with as in navigating the ever-evolving COVID-19 crisis—from how to interpret official data, to the issue of personal freedom versus the common good, to the under-addressed and overlooked public health issue that is a lack of education on prevention. Listen in as Joe offers some high-level wisdom on the world of finance and why it's crucial to think like an owner instead of a gambler in the investment world. Asked about the necessity of risk in the investment world, Joe refers to the well-known saying: "Ships weren't meant to stay in the harbor." Hard-earned cash is not meant to be stuffed under your bed. Anybody who wants to grow their wealth has to take risks in the market. In fact, adopting this attitude toward investing forges a mindset that sees opportunity even in a downturn in the economy. It is a mindset that gets you to say, "Let's deploy every ship we've got ashore, because this is an amazing time to buy and invest." Joe also explains Titan's unique vision-mission as an investment firm and his expectations for the future of the industry. EFR 516: How Entrepreneurs Can Win in Business Without Chasing Profit with Ryan Kelley
Ryan Kelley is the Founder and President of The Home Loan Expert, which he built from the ground-up, with zero capital, in the middle of the Great Recession in 2008. Today, the company is one of the fastest-growing direct mortgage lenders in the country. Asked how he did it, Ryan says that, from the very beginning he simply put his focus on anything but profit and never taking his foot off the gas, even as he began to experience growth. In an industry typically characterized by greed, The Home Loan Expert found tremendous success by running in the opposite direction and paying it forward. Ryan speaks on the initiatives that fuel his passion for what he does. His love for the outdoors inspired him to establish The Keep Climbing Foundation, which initially came from an idea between him and his friends to climb mountains to raise money for childhood cancer. Today, the foundation supports a variety of causes that are in need of financial support and awareness. Having missed out on the opportunity to serve in the military, Ryan was driven to create Hero Loan, a program that shortens the turnaround time to complete a VA home loan—from up to 60 days down to as little as 14 days. Ep 515EFR 515: LGBTQ Pride and How Anyone Can Overcome Otherness, Love Your Authentic Self, and Release Shame with Precious Brady-Davis
For transgender activist Precious Brady-Davis, her turning point came when she realized that she had to love herself first before she would be able to open her heart and attract those who could truly love her. "People can't give you what you don't have.", she says. Having grown up in the Pentecostal faith, she recalls her seemingly endless struggle with being othered by her own religious circle for being a biracial, gender-nonconforming kid. But the same "neglect, instability, and abandonment" that she experienced daily as a child only fueled her determination to find acceptance—even if it meant stepping away from her faith community. Her journey led her to become what she is today: "A trans woman fully actualized, absolutely confident, and precious." She lives with her husband Myles—who is transmasculine—and infant daughter Zayn. In July 2021, Precious released her memoir, I Have Always Been Me, in which she looks back on 35 years that began with immense trauma, and how she was able to turn it all around. In this solo episode, Chase breaks down the exact protocol and the results he experienced after one whole month of using psilocybin. Chase's first experience with psychedelics began in the Fall of 2020. But medicinal mushrooms have been a vital part of his nutritional routine for half a decade prior dipping into the hallucinogenic variety. This is thanks in large part to Shawn Stevenson of The Model Health Show who promoted the scientifically proven wonders of lion's mane, reishi, and cordyceps, among other varieties of functional mushrooms. Listen in as Chase dives deep into his two-day-on, one-day-off microdosing schedule, the exact ingredients each dose consisted of, and the impact of this protocol to his physiological and mental faculties. Ep 512EFR 512: The Great Unlearn - How to Give Yourself Grace When Creating New Belief Systems with Cal Callahan
Cal Callahan is the host of The Great Unlearn podcast, on which he dives into unlearning and questioning what the world taught us, and—in the process—how to be the truest version of yourself, minus the bullshit. Chase and Cal kick things off with a discussion on parenting, with Cal disavowing the oft-quoted saying, "There's no such thing as a bad kid; just a bad parent." There was a time he believed it, but not anymore. He now insists that parenting is about showing up for your kids while allowing them to experience the fullness of life. It's about setting appropriate boundaries but never beating yourself up when your children stray on occasion. "I'm not doing this because I want to be a cool dad," says Cal. "I'm doing it because I want this kid to have his own experience. And I want to show him that I trust him and I trust his judgement." And just as Cal had to unlearn everything he thought he knew about raising kids, so too did he have to forgo many of his beliefs about how to live his own life. Listen in as Cal dares us to question our belief system, to figure out whether our beliefs are really ours or someone else's, or to simply discover whether or not we've been BSing ourselves all our lives. He invites us on a journey back into our body, where we're able to put our trust in our hearts over our minds. Finally, he challenges us to continue loving our wounded selves even as we unlearn our old paradigms and step into a new phase of knowing. Follow Cal @cal.callahan Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights Cal reflects on how he was forced to reevaluate his "picture-perfect" existence when he found himself fearing for his life during the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Most people never experience a radical come-to-Jesus moment as Cal did in 2017. How can the average person find their own unique path to healing and making big changes in their life? How can you continue to love the past version of yourself and glean valuable lessons from that "previous" life as you step into a new phase of knowing. Ep 510EFR 510: Three Factors That Compromise Your Immune System, Using Fasting to Lose Weight, Boost Energy, and Improve Sleep and How to Reduce Household Toxins with Dr. Mindy Pelz
In 2012, Ken Cook, President of Environmental Working Group (EMG) presented a 22-minute talk called "10 Americans". In it, he shares EMG's research on ten individuals across the country to determine how dependent a person's toxic load was on where they lived. What they found was that these ten Americans had over 200 cancer-causing chemicals in them that could potentially lead to infertility, thyroid problems, and autoimmune conditions. Other than the toxins themselves, there was only one commonality shared by every individual in this study: All ten of these Americans were still in the womb. A decade later, we're being barraged by more harmful chemicals in our everyday lives than ever before. What can we do to start lowering our "toxic bucket" today? Dr. Mindy Pelz, DC is a holistic health and fasting expert. Her tips on fasting and alternative health can be found on her YouTube channel as well as the podcast she founded and hosts, The Resetter Podcast. Dr. Pelz is the author of three bestselling books The Menopause Reset, The Reset Factor, and The Reset Kitchen. Dr. Pelz is also the founder of Family Life Wellness (formerly Family Life Chiropractic), a biohacking center in the Bay Area focused on speeding up the healing process and maximizing performance. Listen in as Dr. Pelz shares how to lower your toxic bucket in the modern world, how fasting can nip chronic disease in the bud, why experiencing symptoms such as fever or mucus buildup is actually your body's innate healing mechanism in action, and why addressing immunocompromisation is far more important to ending the pandemic than vaccines and lockdowns. Follow Dr. Pelz @dr.mindypelz Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights Toxins are seeping into our environment and into our bodies, contributing to rising infertility. What exactly are the reasons for this alarming rise in infertility? What is our "toxic bucket" and how do we keep it low as we live our day-to-day lives? Dr. Pelz explains how fasting can overcome the toxins that barrage us daily and contribute to weight loss, mental energy, clarity, and sleep. Ep 509EFR 509: Why Everyone Can Benefit From Taking Collagen with Charlie Bailes
What makes collagen such a unique protein and why should you care? For starters, collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, making up about a third of your body's protein composition. It's known as the "glue" that holds everything together, and once you hit 25, your body's ability to create collagen begins to weaken; hence the "aches and pains" of old age. But it doesn't have to be this way. Today's guest, Charlie Bailes, says that he is in better shape at 34 than he was at 24, mainly thanks to incorporating more collagen into his diet. But what really opened his eyes to the power of collagen was its healing effect on his daughter Vivian, who at 1-and-a-half years old, routinely became sick. After introducing collagen into her diet (alongside other healthy lifestyle choices such as cutting out gluten, vegetable oils, and sugar), Vivian, who was told by multiple pulmonologists that she would be on an inhaler for the rest of her life, now only uses her inhaler about two times a year. Collagen had changed the lives of Charlie and his family, and he wanted to pay it forward. Ep 508EFR 508: Creating a Foundation of Healthy Habits for Long-Term Wellness with Eric Champ
"It all begins with creating a foundation of healthy habits which can lead to long-term wellness." Eric Champ is a Marine Corps veteran who currently owns and operates Champ City Holistic Fitness and a 14-by-7 mobile gym. He is living his passion, but it didn't come overnight. In fact, there was a point in his life when Eric didn't even know if he would live to see the day he turned 40 years old. While in the Marine Corps, holistic health and wellness was the last thing on Eric's list of priorities. He partied almost every night, loved his drink, and eventually ballooned up to over 250 pounds. He knew deep inside that something was horribly wrong with his lifestyle, but he never could never admit it just because he was too afraid to face himself. But the day inevitably came when Eric had to come to terms with what was happening, when he had to engage in "that showdown with myself". He made a fateful decision, while gazing at his deteriorating body in front of the mirror, that he would turn his life around. That decision, coupled with his wife Katie's determination to keep him accountable, drove Eric to keep his eyes firmly rooted on his new path. The next morning, Eric grabbed his shorts, headed to the YMCA down the road, and walked a mile on the treadmill. And so began a journey that would later inspire him to launch a fitness platform that would quickly grow into a thriving worldwide business. Ep 506EFR 506: Holding Fitness Trends Accountable and Why More Training Does Not Equal Better Results with Krysta Huber
The fitness world was dramatically shaken up during the past year-and-a-half—and with it our own goals. With gyms and other fitness establishments finally opening up, how do we get back on track and move forward in an industry that has transformed in so many ways? Krysta is a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach who is the founder of The Fitness FYX brand and the FYX Studio platform. She explains the double-edged sword that is the ease of becoming certified as a coach nowadays. Ep 505EFR 505: Improving Your Self-Esteem, Tapping Into Your Masculine Energy, and Becoming a Professional Man with Angelo Sisco
One of the great attributes of masculine energy is that it pushes us forward—it drives us to advance in a positive direction. But without self-esteem backing up that masculine energy, we may still be able to move forward, but in a negative direction. In today's episode, Angelo Sisco of Alpha Hippie talks all things manhood and the oftentimes elusive road to unlocking the professional man within you. So many of us are obsessed with blazing a trail that, when we look back, we realize we've forgotten our heart. On the other hand, there are those of us who live in our hearts and their thoughts without ever taking action. Listen in as Angelo explains why the first step to embracing your masculinity is actually in nurturing your feminine energy (or what he calls "grace"). Ep 504EFR 504: Your Mind is Not Your Brain and How to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking with Dr. Caroline Leaf, PhD
"You can transition from just being aware of your chaotic and toxic thoughts to being empowered to catch these thoughts in their early stages, manage them. From there, you can improve your overall peace and wellbeing." Dr. Caroline Leaf is a communication pathologist and cognitive neuroscientist who for almost 40 years has been doing research into the mind-brain connection, the nature of mental health, and the formation of memory. Dr. Leaf is the host of the podcast Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess and the author of the book Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple, Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Anxiety, Stress, and Toxic Thinking. We talk in-depth about the book in today's conversation. Her overall message? You are not your brain. Your mind, in fact, controls your neurophysiology. When you understand your mind, you can begin to drive change in your brain and in your body. It's all under your control. She says that, contrary to popular belief, emotional and even physiological symptoms that result from stress are not the result of an irreversibly "broken" brain. Rather, it's a question of your paradigms or the narrative lens that you see the world through. "Because our brain is neuroplastic and we make a million new cells every second, we have a lot of power to influence and change" the stories we tell ourselves. Ep 503EFR 503: The Power of Movement and The Will to Live and Courtenay Turner
Being grateful for the cards you were dealt from birth—whether you label them as "good" or "bad"—is the key to thriving in life despite the challenges (whether physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, etc.) unique to you. That gratitude allows you to contribute some good to the world because you're pouring from an overflowing reservoir. But if your perspective is that of lack and resentfulness, your reservoir is depleted; and then your chances of contributing any good to the world are nil. Today's guest, Courtney Turner, believes that everyone has the ability to shape their destiny, and it starts with discovering that potential in you. "A lot of the time," says Courtenay, "when people are filled with despair or depression or anxiety, it's a lack of hope. And lack of hope stems from feeling like you have no control over your future. But the truth is, we don't know what the future holds." By remembering the things that we have overcome or succeeded at in the past, we can pinpoint our strengths, be grateful for them, and then use those gifts to chart a brighter path going forward. "Let's put less emphasis on losing 10, 20, 30 pounds and more on what hot, healthy, and confident mean to you." This is the motto that Lauren Hubert decided to embody as 2021 rolled out. But getting to the point where she could proclaim and live out this mindset for herself was a journey plagued with doubt and insecurity. After gaining nearly 20 pounds as a freshman at Florida State University, Lauren was determined to shed the weight and regain her self-confidence. Unfortunately, she ended up going down a destructive path defined by hours of running, an extreme calorie deficit, and closing herself off from all social events for fear of getting tempted to eat the "wrong" foods. Ep 500EFR 500: Why Resistance Training is the Most Effective Form of Exercise for Health and Longevity with Sal Di Stefano
Statistics show that the majority of Americans are now obese, in spite of the fact the fitness industry is bigger today than at any other point in time. Sal Di Stefano of Mind Pump Media dives deep into this alarming disconnect and goes through the laundry list of issues that emerge as a result of poor health both on an individual level and on a society level. In 2021, Sal published the book The Resistance Training Revolution, which details his observations and lessons learned after over 20 years in the fitness world. Frustrated at how the industry has failed to adequately address an obesity crisis that only continues to get worse, Sal wrote the book to tackle some of the common myths and misconceptions around health and fitness. In particular, he hopes to change the mainstream paradigm regarding resistance training, which he believes is "the best form of exercise to burn fat, boost metabolism, and achieve health benefits you cannot obtain from other forms of exercise." "I made the book to specifically focus on trying to get people to adopt a form of exercise that has now been proven through study, but also one that I've seen through experience to be the most effective form of exercise for all of the health problems that we tend to run into in modern society—everything from obesity to diabetes to dementia to Alzheimer's to loss of mobility to hormone issues. I'm trying to change the stigma that surrounds this form of exercise." Sal goes on to explain why cardio and tracking calories burned during exercise are two of the worst things to focus on when trying to lose weight. He then gives his thoughts on the dangers of the "self love" trend and why you should never conflate "self image" with "body image". Ep 499EFR 499: Emotional Honesty in Relationships and Creating Conscious Friendships May and Chase Chewning, and Kara and Caleb Campbell
Chase and May are joined today by Kara and Caleb Campbell. Kara is a celebrity event planner and human connection facilitator, and Caleb is a West Point graduate, former US Army officer, former NFL player, and former US Olympic bobsled athlete. Today, Chase, May, Kara, and Caleb talk all things relationships and the importance and necessity of continuous growth and maintaining a space for you to thrive in. They speak on how this all allows for the introduction of deep, meaningful relationships into your life as well as the strengthening of the relationships you already have. They also dive deep into emotional honesty as being fundamental to progression (or regression, if you lack it). Emotional honesty, they say, serves as a guide that allows you to filter the friendships and other relationships that serve you from those that don't. That honesty also helps you accept the ease of falling in love and finding your person. Finally, they reflect on why your perspective of events, particularly challenging ones, is the key factor to your getting through them while taking away valuable lessons for growth. Ep 498EFR 498: Signs You Are Experiencing Burnout and May Not Realize It and How to Ditch Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms with Wendy McCallum
Wendy McCallum is a burnout and balance coach, author, and speaker. In this conversation, she recounts her own struggles dealing with a high-stress lifestyle in the past, as well as the common signs and symptoms of burnout. She offers practical tools that anyone can use to both recover from burnout and prevent it from happening again in the future. She talks about unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol, food, and social media and how we can learn to rely less on these crutches and become more present. Wendy also gives her thoughts on the unique challenges that many of us experienced in 2020 and continue to face in 2021. One of her observations at the tail-end of the pandemic has been the emergence of a "third shift" in the lives of working professionals. If our "first shift" represents our actual career and our "second shift" refers to the people under our care—whether our children or aging parents—our new "third shift" is helping to orchestrate or manage schooling from home. This, of course, is on top of the overall anxiety all of us have felt in the past year-and-a-half. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns have led to a significantly higher stress load on the average human being. Burnout is one of the symptoms of this stress. Ep 494EFR 494: The Science of Deep Sleep, Maximizing Recovery, and How Quantifying our Behaviors Can Lead to Improved Performance with Kristen Holmes
"If we have a platform that allows us to account for the physiological and psychological variables that impact our performance, then we can effectively choose our level of performance at any given moment." Kristen Holmes is the Vice President of Performance Science at WHOOP, a platform that delivers personalized insights on your fitness, sleep, and recovery to you in real-time, effectively facilitating the connection between you and your body. According to Kristen, WHOOP allows us to apply our behaviors, because once we can understand, in a quantifiable way, why our body is performing the way it currently is, we then gain the confidence to be intentional in everything we do—from the sports we play to the daily routines we live out day-to-day. Ultimately, we're all just trying to be as engaged, present, and available as we can be, no matter the task at hand. To be able to track performance changes through data in real-time is a powerful way to pinpoint weaknesses, fill gaps, and adapt to environmental stressors. Listen in as Kristen does a deep dive into how personalized insights by WHOOP can help anybody, athlete or otherwise, to live their lives with more energy and joy. She also shares why it's not just the physiological parameters that influence our adaptive capacity; that the research indicates that the psychological component impacts us more profoundly than anything we can do physiologically. Ep 493EFR 493: Stop Dieting and Start Living - Secrets to Sustainable Weight Loss with Carter Good
As with any journey of self-improvement, weight loss starts and ends with mindset. "Stop thinking of food as 'good' or 'bad'," says today's guest, Carter Good. "There's just food and the context in which it is eaten." The struggle to form healthy nutrition and lifestyle habits comes down to the stories that you tell yourself around every decision you make, big or small. Carter himself attributes his past obesity to "using food as an emotional suppressant." Carter goes on to say, "It's really about reframing things and getting people to a place where they don't feel like they have to make better choices and they have to exercise, but that they get to do these things." Carter Good is a weight loss coach and the founder of the Leaner for Life community. He shares the story of how he lost 100 pounds in eight months, and why the hardest part of his journey came only after he lost all that weight. Ep 492EFR 492: How a Death Sentence Can Change Your Life with Logan Sneed
More often than not, out of our most challenging moments emerge our greatest opportunities. It took only 24 hours to turn young Logan Sneed's entire world upside down. A college athlete and aspiring entrepreneur, a stage-4 brain cancer diagnosis was the last thing Logan ever expected at that point in his life. But that's exactly what happened following a near-accident on the road when Logan blacked out while FaceTiming his girlfriend. Together with his strong-willed parents, Logan was able to connect with one of the most sought-after neurosurgeons in the world, who thankfully managed to extract the egg-sized tumor. But just when Logan thought he was in the clear, he was given ten years to live with no word of hope whatsoever. Even after receiving his "death sentence", Logan soldiered on, determined to find a solution. He found it when a long-time mentor encouraged him to take up the ketogenic diet, which at the time was still widely unheard of. Logan went all-in and not only found a new lease on life, but also decided to share his experiences with the world on social media. In spite of a barrage of haters who doubted his story and the legitimacy of his so-called "keto diet", there were enough people who were inspired by his journey for Logan to realize that he could monetize his growing brand. Even this wasn't the end of Logan's trials. Listen in as he describes the lowest point in his journey so far—even beyond the diagnosis—as well as his betrayal at the hands of a man he once called "mentor". But Logan also shares why, when all is said and done, cancer was the greatest thing that ever happened to him, having led him down the path to discovering his purpose and impacting thousands of lives (and rapidly counting) for the better.
