Ep 560EFR 560: Good to Great Using Higher States of Consciousness with Jonathan de Potter

Jonathan de Potter is the Founder of Behold Retreats, a health and wellness platform that provides holistic plant medicine programs in beautiful, conscious, and soulful locations. He advocates unlocking true human potential by tapping into the inner self using holistic practices and plant medicine, a journey that stemmed from his desire to find his own life's purpose. In 2016, as an atheist confined in the corporate web, Jonathan took a year off from his full-time job for his first-ever plant medicine retreat in Peru. Humbled by the experience, he started spending more time researching plant medicine, and in the process, realized its connection with the human subconscious and how it helps embody life with more purpose and meaning. Today, he imparts this learning and wisdom as a healing facilitator to help transform the lives of many more people, unlike popular practice that consolidates knowledge into a product or periodic program. In today's conversation, Jonathan explores what it takes to master the journey of a true healer, including profound connection and surrendering for deeper exploration of the subconscious and conscious realms. Moreover, he intertwines science, culture, and the community's power to explain energetic interactions (that exist beyond your physical body) and talks about using plant-based medicines to intentionally release inherent trauma or lower-level energies to live a more conscious, content life. But what if your life is already free of the said trauma and is as happy as you know it? Is there a higher level of self you could experience? As Jonathan explains, there's a level beyond your present state of consciousness that involves greater trust and confidence in the universe; a life that serves not only you but also inspires the world outside you. That's where energetic healing has the potential to take you. Ep 559EFR 559: Ten Ways to Improve Your HRV

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is an essential parameter to measure your heart health and stress levels at any point. While a higher variability of the metric signals that your body can push past strenuous exercises some more, a lower measure is an indication that it needs a break. Today we explore identified ways to improve your HRV – and all that they demand of you are simple, conscious changes in your everyday habits. Chase uses his personal story and backable science to teach you 10 simple tips that improve HRV. Referencing Mark Van Deusen's article on Heart Rate Variability (Whoop), he touches on its nervous system origination, significance, stress impact, and applications so you can know why the HRV is a breakthrough metric for wellness. In addition, you'll learn about the body's regulatory processes of homeostasis and allostasis that are responsible for maintaining equilibrium despite internal and external changes (both central to your brain's stress handling mechanism). For those of you new to the whole HRV study or seeking some of the best toolset, supplements, and product recommendations to start with, Chase also shares the products he personally uses and how they help him in his wellness journey – do not forget to tune in! Ep 557EFR 557: Reinventing Yourself to Become a Full Time Creative with Casey Adams

Challenges suck, but needless to say, they're an inevitable part of life. Whether they're personal or professional, they can strike when you least expect them and leave you feeling helpless and adrift… forcing you into situations you'd have never imagined before. What does it take to pull yourself from back there? How do you not fall apart? This week, Chase sits with Casey Adams on The Casey Adams Show podcast to revisit his journey as an ex-military man, health coach, and established podcaster, explaining how he reinvented himself continually to chase his passion despite the problems. Burdened by a queue of stressors post his father's death, Chase battled with himself for years after the tragedy – physically, mentally, and emotionally, including an injury that led to reconstructive surgery in both his hips. The experience had a profound impact on his personal and professional life, and unexpectedly enough, turned it around for the better. Despite the odds, per his father's advice, Chase lives and advocates a life ever forward, one that's led by passion and a desire to do better. In this discussion, Chase breaks down his journey, explaining the pile-up of challenges and the succession of events that led him to the world of podcasts. Chase explains his uncompromising principles in life and how they've shaped his life's trajectory, the most important being a willingness to continually chase the next big thing and always show up. You'll also hear him break down invaluable podcasting lessons from his own experience – priceless advice from a thriving genius. Ep 556EFR 556: How to Become Someone You Are Proud Of and Go From Being an Unconscious Consumer to Conscious Creator with Matthew Paetz

Matthew Paetz returns on Ever Forward Radio to share how he has been navigating the seemingly endless period of uncertainty brought about by the pandemic—particularly around how he has been striving to shift from being what he calls an "unconscious consumer" to being a "conscious creator". "I'm creating a life I've never had by doing things I've never done," says Matthew, adding that his focus has been on building on himself over his achievements. One of the major ways he has been doing this over the past 18 months is by immersing himself in the world of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy as a modality for addressing trauma. Matthew defines these guided sessions as "medicines for the soul"—contrasting it with alcohol which he calls "medicine for the ego". He then breaks down the development of our ego and how these sessions allow you to detach from that ego and see your life from a completely different perspective. "These medicines, in a guided session, would be the greatest gift I could give the entire world," says Matthew. He believes that, should the public embrace this gift, Western medicine as it pertains to mental health would be "eradicated" in a matter of months. Ep 553EFR 553: Revealing the Truth Behind Public Health, Biases in Health and Nutrition Research, and How to Be a Healthy Skeptic with Robert Davis

Robert J. Davis, PhD, is a health journalist with a public health background as well as the Author of The Healthy Skeptic: Cutting Through the HYPE About Your Health. As a journalist, Robert realized how much people are trying to lobby for their new exercise routines, diets, and hospitals. That opened his eyes to all the money and propaganda involved in skewing science and persuading the public to do certain things. So, should we be putting our trust into "industry experts" on the same level as scientists? Is the validity of health studies and journalism going away? In this discussion, Robert and Chase examine the role of skepticism in diet culture, nutritional sciences, and general health and wellness. Robert offers tips on how to discern which health studies and claims are trustworthy and which are misleading, noting trusted health resources and publications you can use to stay educated about nutrition. Ep 544EFR 544: The Difference Between Health and Fitness and How to Expand Your Comfort Zone to Live a Life Aligned with Your Goals with Joe DiStefano

Joe DiStefano is a global authority on how to optimize wellness and longevity on the path to improving fitness and sports performance. After over 17 years of professional experience in the fitness industry, Joe has had the opportunity to coach some of the world's top athletes, instructed over 100 live events in 15+ countries, and spoken on the TED stage. In today's multifaceted discussion, Joe gives his thoughts on crossing the threshold between a life of survival and a life of thriving, as he explores the emotions that come with survival (ex. shame, fear, guilt, etc.) and those virtues that allow one to thrive (ex. Love, humility, selflessness, etc.). In particular, Joe addresses the true nature of shame and how its destructive effects manifest themselves even before we engage in the thing that we perceive will bring us shame. "Whatever we think," he says, "we basically receive." He shares his personal rituals that have helped him break out of and steer clear of the trap of negativity, including ice baths and stream-of-consciousness writing. By rubbing up against the threshold of discomfort, says Joe, the mind and body develops a higher tolerance for pain. Finally, Joe explains why it's more important today than ever before to surround yourself with circles of influence and constellations of support. Dr. Sara Gottfried, MD is the Director of Precision Medicine at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at Thomas Jefferson University. Her work in precision medicine involves tracking data flows via wearables for her patients, who range from corporate executives to professional athletes. Initially developed as a medical model for cancer research, precision medicine is now being used more broadly, beyond oncology, as a highly personalized approach to treating patients. Ep 541EFR 541: Trading Addiction for Fitness and Finding True Inner Strength with John Wolf

In today's conversation, John Wolf shares a journey that saw him emerge from the depths of grief and loss to undergo a holistic transformation that ultimately led him to be the Chief Fitness Officer at Onnit. Having lost many of the people closest to him early in his life, John quickly found himself descending down a path of drug addiction. He talks about the years of inner work that he did (and continues to do) to maintain his self-worth, as well as the outer work he underwent to rebuild his body and indirectly build stronger belief systems as a result. John rediscovered his passion for fitness and martial arts down the road. Trading one "addiction" for another, John saw exercise as a way to continually reforge and optimize not only his body, but his entire being. In training his clients at Onnit, John uses an approach he calls "conscious coaching" that leads them into a state of flow "where skill and effort intersect." To John, "ever forward" is a matter of maintaining this flow, of staying laser-focused on your purpose while staying receptive to continuous learning and growth. Ep 539EFR 539: The Science of Paying Attention and How to Develop a Peak Mind in 12 Minutes a Day with Dr. Amishi Jha, PhD

Studies show that, when performing any given task, we're giving our attention to that task only half the time. Yet, as our guest explains, this is by design. Because we are overwhelmed with information (i.e. senses) every time we make a decision, our brains pay attention to be able to home in on the most important information we need at that particular moment. Listen in as Dr. Amisha Jha does a deep dive into the nature of attention and the three factors that contribute to (and deplete) our "attentional gas tank". She explains how to cultivate a peak mind through mindfulness practices, and even shares the 12-minute daily exercise anybody can do to embody the same state of mindfulness as that of special operators in the military. Dr. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami and the author of Peak Mind. She serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. What was especially impactful for him was learning about the almost curative effects of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy on servicemembers suffering from PTSD, severe anxiety, and depression. After sifting through the research as well as hearing from the actual healthcare professionals working at Field Trip Health, Chase came to the conclusion that psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is the future of healthcare as a whole, considering the trajectory of your life is largely downstream from your mental health. Listen in as Chase offers his advice to those who, like himself, are exploring the world of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and why he believes so strongly in leaning into what feels right on your unique wellness journey. He reflects back on his two, incredibly profound ketamine sessions at Field Trip Health, and how those two sessions gave Chase "years of [therapy] work in about an hour." Ep 537EFR 537: Spiritual Explorations in the Pursuit of the Meaning of Life with Doug Cartwright

Do you ever wonder why we exist here on planet Earth? With all the pressure and messaging from society and religion to be a certain way, have nice things, make more money, and reach a certain status, it's often hard for us to realize the essence of being human, which is that our worth and power lie within us. Best-selling author Doug Cartwright has learned that "if you're using something external to solve an internal problem, you're never going to get fulfilled." The truth is, you're worthy of infinite love, peace, and joy just because you're alive. Your worth is not dependent on anything but your existence. That's kind of a relief, isn't it? Though getting to a place where you're living a deep, rich, meaningful life isn't an easy journey, it's a journey worth embarking on. So… Holy Shit, We're Alive… Now What? Ep 535EFR 535: What is Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy and Using Ketamine to Treat Mental Health with Ronan Levy

Ronan Levy is a pioneer in the therapeutic psychedelics industry. He is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Field Trip Health. With centres opening across North America, Field Trip Health helps people to heal and heighten their engagement with the world via the healing modality of psychedelics. "There's doubt about it. We are in a psychedelic renaissance," says Ronan, referring to the recent dramatic realignment of mainstream views around traditional medicine. Calling it "a massive change in the global zeitgeist", this paradigm shift goes beyond health and wellness, reflecting a change in how we view emotions and even spirituality. Contributing heavily to this revolution is the mental health crisis that had already been on the rise for years but was further aggravated by the pandemic for the past year-and-a-half. Citing "significant humanitarian and economic implications", Ronan says that "depression and anxiety disorders are going to become the leading global burden of disease, meaning they will cost the global economy more than any other disease out there, primarily from lost productivity." With these realities in mind, Ronan dives deep into the history, science, and psychological and pro-social benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapy. He speaks on the common, decades-long misconceptions surrounding this subject, and the groundbreaking research done on ketamine and psilocybin that, if rediscovered in the world of conventional medicine, may become a key factor in eradicating not just the current mental health crisis, but many of the social and environmental ills we face today as well. Ep 534EFR 534: What to Look For in Natural Herbal Remedies with Nina Mullen

With more and more research emerging around the long-term risks associated with traditional over-the-counter brands, says Nina Mullen, "we're at a specific moment where mainstream consumers are more aware of the risks and just want to find holistic solutions." She adds that not only naturopathic doctors, but even conventional medical professionals are starting to take notice of these disconcerting trends associated with Big Pharma. Nina is the Co-Founder of Hilma. The brand was launched in 2019 with three products, each of which covers its own unique category: 1) An immune support blend; 2) An upset stomach relief for occasional heartburn, antacid, and digestion; and 3) A head tension relief. Natural, clean label products have taken center-stage in virtually every consumer category, from consumables, beauty, household cleaners, and personal care. However, the medicine cabinet continues to be stuck in the past with most being stocked with the usual OTC legacy brands like Airborne, Emergen-C, or Tums. Ep 533EFR 533: How to Make Your Inner Health Match Your Outer Health with Dr. Avanti Kumar Singh, MD

Our outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world, and optimal health is all about adopting the right habits that support those two worlds. It all starts with the self-awareness and openness to change embodied in Ayurvedic medicine. It's a healing system which teaches us that change is an intrinsic quality in nature, and so why shouldn't we see that reality of continuous change in ourselves? In other words, Ayurveda teaches us to turn to nature for wisdom on how we, as human beings, should discern what's best for our life. When we experience symptoms of any kind, whether internally or externally, it is an indicator that we are not in harmony with the world around us, or with ourselves. From how we've been eating and sleeping to how we've been managing our relationships and career—all of these things either support or weaken our health. Listen in and learn how we can adopt the principles of Ayurveda to take full control over our life and achieve optimal health. Dr. Avanti is an internationally recognized speaker and thought leader in Ayurveda. Ep 530EFR 530: COVID Vaccination - What Does the Science Say and Is Natural Immunity Real with Dr. Jonathan Baktari, MD

Today's conversation is a sobering deep dive into the highly controversial but crucial subject that is the COVID-19 vaccine, featuring Jonathan Baktari MD. Dr. Baktari is the CEO of e7 Health, a Las Vegas-based company focused on preventative health and wellness. He kicks off the conversation with a high-level explanation of exactly what a vaccine is. The goal of a vaccine, he says, is to take advantage of the immune system's strengths by "tricking" the body. The body is injected with a portion of a germ, whether that germ is a virus or bacteria. The dose is small enough to get the body to detect the germ, thereby training the immune system to become efficient at fighting it while minimizing the damage it could have done to the body if the germ were "whole". Dr. Baktari and Chase go on to unpack the trickiest questions the world is now faced with as in navigating the ever-evolving COVID-19 crisis—from how to interpret official data, to the issue of personal freedom versus the common good, to the under-addressed and overlooked public health issue that is a lack of education on prevention. EFR 516: How Entrepreneurs Can Win in Business Without Chasing Profit with Ryan Kelley

Ryan Kelley is the Founder and President of The Home Loan Expert, which he built from the ground-up, with zero capital, in the middle of the Great Recession in 2008. Today, the company is one of the fastest-growing direct mortgage lenders in the country. Asked how he did it, Ryan says that, from the very beginning he simply put his focus on anything but profit and never taking his foot off the gas, even as he began to experience growth. In an industry typically characterized by greed, The Home Loan Expert found tremendous success by running in the opposite direction and paying it forward. Ryan speaks on the initiatives that fuel his passion for what he does. His love for the outdoors inspired him to establish The Keep Climbing Foundation, which initially came from an idea between him and his friends to climb mountains to raise money for childhood cancer. Today, the foundation supports a variety of causes that are in need of financial support and awareness. Having missed out on the opportunity to serve in the military, Ryan was driven to create Hero Loan, a program that shortens the turnaround time to complete a VA home loan—from up to 60 days down to as little as 14 days. Having grown up in the Pentecostal faith, she recalls her seemingly endless struggle with being othered by her own religious circle for being a biracial, gender-nonconforming kid. But the same "neglect, instability, and abandonment" that she experienced daily as a child only fueled her determination to find acceptance—even if it meant stepping away from her faith community. Her journey led her to become what she is today: "A trans woman fully actualized, absolutely confident, and precious." She lives with her husband Myles—who is transmasculine—and infant daughter Zayn. In July 2021, Precious released her memoir, I Have Always Been Me, in which she looks back on 35 years that began with immense trauma, and how she was able to turn it all around. In this solo episode, Chase breaks down the exact protocol and the results he experienced after one whole month of using psilocybin. Chase's first experience with psychedelics began in the Fall of 2020. But medicinal mushrooms have been a vital part of his nutritional routine for half a decade prior dipping into the hallucinogenic variety. This is thanks in large part to Shawn Stevenson of The Model Health Show who promoted the scientifically proven wonders of lion's mane, reishi, and cordyceps, among other varieties of functional mushrooms. Listen in as Chase dives deep into his two-day-on, one-day-off microdosing schedule, the exact ingredients each dose consisted of, and the impact of this protocol to his physiological and mental faculties. Ep 512EFR 512: The Great Unlearn - How to Give Yourself Grace When Creating New Belief Systems with Cal Callahan

Cal Callahan is the host of The Great Unlearn podcast, on which he dives into unlearning and questioning what the world taught us, and—in the process—how to be the truest version of yourself, minus the bullshit. Chase and Cal kick things off with a discussion on parenting, with Cal disavowing the oft-quoted saying, "There's no such thing as a bad kid; just a bad parent." There was a time he believed it, but not anymore. He now insists that parenting is about showing up for your kids while allowing them to experience the fullness of life. It's about setting appropriate boundaries but never beating yourself up when your children stray on occasion. "I'm not doing this because I want to be a cool dad," says Cal. "I'm doing it because I want this kid to have his own experience. And I want to show him that I trust him and I trust his judgement." And just as Cal had to unlearn everything he thought he knew about raising kids, so too did he have to forgo many of his beliefs about how to live his own life. Listen in as Cal dares us to question our belief system, to figure out whether our beliefs are really ours or someone else's, or to simply discover whether or not we've been BSing ourselves all our lives. He invites us on a journey back into our body, where we're able to put our trust in our hearts over our minds. Finally, he challenges us to continue loving our wounded selves even as we unlearn our old paradigms and step into a new phase of knowing. Follow Cal @cal.callahan Follow Chase @chase_chewning Key Highlights Cal reflects on how he was forced to reevaluate his "picture-perfect" existence when he found himself fearing for his life during the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Most people never experience a radical come-to-Jesus moment as Cal did in 2017. How can the average person find their own unique path to healing and making big changes in their life? How can you continue to love the past version of yourself and glean valuable lessons from that "previous" life as you step into a new phase of knowing.
