National Council of Province hearing presentation on National Health Insurance Bill

The National Council of Province's committee on Health is today being briefed by officials from the Department of Health on the National Health Insurance Bill. The bill was been passed by the National Assembly last week with the aim to provide universal healthcare to all South Africans, at both public or private health facilities. Eleventh South Africa AIDS conference gets underway in Durban

The much-anticipated start to the 11th South Africa AIDS conference that is set to take place at the Durban ICC has been marred with protests from various organisations which have gathered under the campaign, Love Picketing. Hundred from these health-based organisations are making their way through the streets of the Durban CBD with the intention to raise concerns over the quality of the country's health-care system together with raising concerns about the scourge of HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy. Case against man accused of murdering his 70-year-old mother postponed by the Brits Magistrates Court

The case against a North West man who is charged with murdering his 70-year-old mother has been postponed to the 27th of June 2023 this comes as he made his second appearance at the Brits Magistrates Court earlier on Tuesday morning, The alleged drug dealer murdered his mother by slitting her throat while sleeping last week. Plane carrying SA journalists and security personnel back home

The plane carrying journalists and security personnel that was supposed to accompany President Cyril Ramaphosa to Ukraine and Russia but was grounded in Warsaw, Poland has flown back home. Polish authorities refused over 120 South African presidential security guards and journalists permission to disembark from an aircraft for 26 hours. Reasons that Polish authorities gave for the decision include permits which were not in order and they were not informed about some of the people on board. South African Institute of International Affairs Senior Researcher, Gustavo de Carvalho says it is important to bare in mind which stage of the conflict is currently unfolding.

City of Tshwane residents march to Marabastad in protest against undocumented foreign nationals

Tensions are brewing in the City of Tshwane as local residents clash with alleged illegal immigrants living in the area of Marabastad. Residents have threatened to embark on a week-long mass protest saying they have had enough of illegal immigrants operating businesses in their communities and dominating the local economy. Business owners in Marabastad have however vowed to fight back calling on immigration officials and the police to enforce the law. R58 million in Cape Town projects halted due to threats from extortionists

The City of Cape Town has expressed concern over the delays in some of its multi-million-rand infrastructure projects due to threats from extortionists demanding to have a piece of the construction pie. Projects in areas such as Khayelitsha, Delft and Brooklyn have seen contractors threatened and equipment stolen by the so-called construction mafia. The Northern Cape department of education has revealed that an average of 900 learners aged between 10 and 19 years old, fall pregnant each quarter. Majority of the pregnancies happen in the rural district of John Taolo Gaetsewe in Kuruman. The department says this is a concern as it affects learning and teaching. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisations says South Africa has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy globally, with nearly one in four girls falling pregnant before turning 20 years old. Local data by Statistics South Africa shows that over 90-thousand girls aged ten to 19 years gave birth from March 2021 to April 2022 in all nine provinces. The report further revealed that of the almost 34-thousand teenage pregnancies during 2020, 660 of those were girls under the age of 13 years. According online publication Groundup the municipality blames bureaucratic delays, the Covid-19 pandemic, the July 2021 unrest, and the KZN floods for the delays in the unfinished housing project called The Namibia Stop 8 Housing Project. eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Lindiwe Khuzwayo says the municipality would need about R43-million to complete the project. The Department of Employment and Labour will be embarking on an Employment Equity (EE) Workshop with all trade union federations following a call for all workplaces to review their Employment Equity Plans. The Department says the purpose of the workshop is to familiarise all trade union federations on their roles and responsibilities as members of the Employment Equity consultative forums; and to capacitate them in the implementation of the Employment Equity plans in the workplace to align with Employment Equity amendments. A 31-year old Zimbabwean national is currently appearing before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's court in connection with the dramatic prison escape of murderer, Thabo Bester. Retired Judge Siraj Desai, the legal ombudsman of South Africa says the ombuds office has to protect and promote the public interest in the rendering of legal services as contemplated in the legal practice act . He was addressing the media on the status of his office and the very recent promulgation of the sections of the Legal Practice Act which deals with the appeals processes. The media briefing is also aimed at facilitating an open dialogue and provide the public with a comprehensive understanding of the censure against Judge Desai. Judge Desai was recently censured by the Judicial Conduct Committee following a complaint lodged by the SA Zionist Federation. Electricity Minister announces that Mozambique has availed 100 megawatts of power to South Africa
