Today is D-Day for Johannesburg Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda following his commitment to begin providing much needed services to the residents of Diepkloof hostels in Soweto. Disgruntled residents took to the streets last week barricading the N1, the N12 interchange and the Chris Hani Road with burning tyres, debris and stones. Media and Police vehicles were also attacked and a beer truck was looted. Residents have been protesting over a lack of services in the area which includes the provision of electricity and running water. Former president Thabo Mbeki has paid homage to veteran struggle activist Sally Motlana, describing her as a true patriotic and pillar of strength for many during the fight for liberation. Mbeki was speaking during the funeral service of the late Motlana which is being held at the All Saints Anglican Church in Sandton, north of Johannesburg. Motlana died at the age of 96 last month and was instrumental in the South African Council of Churches' adoption of a public stand against apartheid. Mop-up operations continue following deadly floods in the Nama khoi Municipality
Four bodies have now been recovered after five people went missing following the heavy rains and flooding in the Northern Cape, Namaqualand region, The search continues for the last person who is still missing. Heavy machinery has been deployed to excavate and clear some roads, five towns are completely cut-off and some households are running out of supplies. The Judicial Conduct Committee is expected to meet in Johannesburg today to process some of the complaints laid against some of the country's judges. There has been an increasing number of judges who have been reported to the Judicial Service Commission for alleged misconducct, inmcluding Judge President John Hlophe, Judge Mushtak Parker, Judge Nana Makhubele. Parliament's presiding officers meet with Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo over his comments
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and Parliament's presiding officers Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Amos Masondo are expected to meet today at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg over the next two days. The aim of the meeting is to smooth relations between the judiciary and parliament. The meeting comes after statements made by Zondo last week. He said he has not seen the implementation of the State Capture Commission's recommendations by parliament. Situation calmer in Diepkloof, Soweto following violent protest
The situation remains relatively calm in and around Diepkloof hostel in Soweto with traffic flowing normally along the Chris Hani road, which passes adjacent to the hostel. Police are stationed strategically along the route following clashes between protestsing locals and authorities on Monday morning. Residents are demanding proper, flushing toilets and electricity at the hostel. They have expressed concern that they are forced to share a few communal taps, as the hostel's structure continues to crumble around them. Cholera outbreak claims 43 lives
The death toll from the Cholera outbreak has risen to 43, the national health department has confirmed. The departmental spokesperson Foster Mohale says Gauteng accounts for most of the deaths, with 35 people confirmed to have died from the water-borne disease. The country has recorded 1,045 suspected cases of cholera in 15 out of 52 districts across five provinces,197 of which were laboratory-confirmed. Gauteng accounts for most of the cases at 89% with 176 reported from three districts. Free State accounts for 6% with 11 of the cases, reported from one Fezile Dabi District, North West has recorded 5 cases, Limpopo four cases and one case in Mpumalanga. The Congress of the People (Cope) has terminated the membership of its deputy president and one of its two MPs, Willie Madisha. Cope's secretary-general, Eric Mohlapamaswi, said the decision to axe Madisha and Mzwandile Nhleko, its secretary for elections, was taken at the party's national committee meeting on Sunday.He added the decision to remove Madisha and Nhleko was unanimous and taken in terms of article 25(3) (V) of the party's constitution. speculation is rife that COPE's national spokesperson Dennis Bloem could also be next on the chopping board as Bloem was served with the same letter served to Madisha and Hleko. However, he has asked for more time to Respond to the letter. He has also been asked not to respond to media queries on behalf of the party.
