Why does not getting enough sleep make you selfish?

Not getting a good night’s sleep can certainly leave you feeling grumpy and groggy, but can it also make you selfish? Sleep experts at the University of California, Berkeley certainly seem to think so, and apparently even losing just one hour of sleep is enough to make you less generous towards others and that includes friends and family. The team conducted a number experiments which were published in the open-access journal. Over 100 participants were asked to fill out sleep diaries over four days - including how long they slept and if their sleep was interrupted then answer an ‘altruism questionnaire’ with questions like: “would you help if a stranger stopped to ask for directions while you were in a rush to get to work”. What were the results? What impact could this have? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What is an eco-friendly beach?

This summer, relax and learn with Do You Really Know! It's time to learn all about the concepts, words and expressions that surround the summer season! What is an eco-friendly beach? For many people, beaches are synonymous with the summer holiday season. Beach holidays have been popular since the second half of the 19th century, and are the archetypal form of mass tourism. With millions of people indulging in such getaways each year, it goes without saying that there’s a significant environmental impact. We regularly get riled when seeing pictures of beaches covered in plastic bottles, or turtles choking on straws. Around 10 million tonnes of waste end up in the ocean each year, with tourism hotspots creating 26% more than other cities. How can I ease my foot pain?

Feet carry our body weight and bear the impact of every step we take. Furthermore, they play an active role in balance control, thanks to sensors located along our tendons. Whether you’re on the bus, relaxing at home, or taking a walk while listening to your favourite podcast, take a moment to look at your feet. Believe it or not, they account for a quarter of the bones in your body. Each foot has 14 phalanges, which are the toe bones in the forefoot, 5 metatarsals and 7 tarsals at the back of the foot forming the framework around the ankle and heel. On top of that, your feet are also made up of ligaments, muscles and joints. With all this, and 7200 nerve endings, it goes without saying that the feet are highly sensitive parts of the body. What foot problems can you encounter? Could intentional inflexibility help you succeed at work?

Multitasking, or the art of juggling several tasks at once, is more common than ever before in the workplace. In 2022, a German think tank called Next Work Innovation released a study which showed that knowledge workers are interrupted on average every four minutes during the working day! In a past episode of Do You Really Know, we discussed how our brains manage to cope with multiple demands at once. Suffice to say: it’s not easy! It can be really tricky to focus again after a distraction, and many workers believe interruptions negatively impact their productivity and well-being at work. Is Bedrotting bad for your health?

Whether it’s reading, journaling, enjoying breakfast, or scrolling through social media, these are just a few activities people indulge in while lounging in bed. For some, this has evolved into an art form, popularized by a viral TikTok trend known as “bed rotting.” This habit embodies a laid-back attitude, where productivity and responsibilities are momentarily cast aside in favor of a few minutes or hours of procrastination. Eleanor McGlinchey, a sleep psychologist at Manhattan Therapy Collective and Associate Professor of Psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, suggests that spending time in bed before starting the day can provide a sense of control over our time and lives. The same concept applies at night: we attempt to reclaim control over our day by lingering in bed before sleep, effectively delaying bedtime. This phenomenon, known as revenge bedtime procrastination, serves as a form of rebellion against our daily responsibilities. But what does this have to do with health? What are the potential problems of bed rotting? Can Bed Rotting Be a Sign of Withdrawal? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Why do men always take care of the barbecue?

Every summer, the pattern repeats itself: the drinks are flowing, the atmosphere is relaxed but as soon as it’s time to light the grill, men gravitate toward the fire while women handle everything else. The result is a quiet but familiar gender split. And it’s not just anecdotal. According to an OpinionWay survey for Campingaz in 2015: when preparing a barbecue 75% of women do the shopping, 72% draw up the menus, 48% prepare the dishes, but when it comes to cooking the food, only 8% of them take care of the barbecue. What are the world's least safe travel destinations?

In past episodes of Do You Really Know, we’ve talked about the best holiday destinations in the UK and abroad, as well as how to find the most budget-friendly options. Today though, we’re going to talk about security. The idea of visiting many countries all over the world is enticing, but it's important to remember that some destinations are significantly more dangerous than others. Rather than making decisions based on intuition, why not consider using guidance that’s actually based on facts and statistics. One such example is the annual risk map produced by Swedish software company Safeture, which ranks countries based on how safe they are for tourists. Which are the most dangerous then? What if I really need to visit one of these countries? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! What are mirror hours?

Ever checked the time on your phone or TV set and seen a quirky number like 13:13, 11:11 or 20:20? Well of course you have, but what you may not know is there’s actually a name for such numbers: mirror hours! Basically, when you’re looking at a digital time display, you see a mirror time if the minute number and the hour number are the same. It refers to the symmetry you see on either side of the colon separating the two numbers. Most people are pretty indifferent to this, or see it as a vaguely amusing quirk at most. But for some it goes much further and they believe mirror hours have a mystical or even spiritual meaning, making them far more than just another minute in the day. What kind of meaning are we talking about? How many different mirror hours are there? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! How long do I have to wait to swim after eating?

I’m sure at some point as a child on holiday you were told not to go swimming right after eating. Popular belief suggests that we should wait a certain amount of time before getting into the water, in order to let our bodies finish digesting. Some parents swear by a 30-minute rule, while others say up to two hours, depending on how heavy a meal has been consumed! But in reality, we know that digestion can actually take more than three hours. Shouldn’t we all be waiting at least three hours in that case? What does cold water shock have to do with eating? Do I really need to flush toxins out of my body?

There are an increasing number of trends and products out there to rid your body of toxins, such as infrared saunas, liver-purifying supplements and detox diets. But what exactly are toxins? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a toxin is “a poisonous substance, especially one produced by bacteria, that causes disease.” However, today we tend to use the word toxin to refer to all the harmful substances present in the body such as food additives, pesticides, alcohol, gluten or pollutants. It’s actually kind of misleading, because not all toxins are as bad as one might think. That’s especially true when you consider that our bodies are capable of flushing out toxins on their own, without the need for any fancy treatments or supplements. Which organs in the body are responsible for eliminating toxins? People say that you have to sweat to flush out toxins… is that true? Are we saying there’s no need to flush toxins out after all? What are the best ways to have sex in water?

Having sex in water is a common fantasy for a lot of people. We’re talking about in the sea, in a jacuzzi or in a swimming pool for example. A lot of TV shows and films have made it seem like a must-try experience. In reality though, salty seawater or a chlorine-filled pool don’t exactly make for the most comfortable sex. Not to mention any sand at the beach! And there are health risks too, for women in particular, as seawater or pool water can disrupt the pH balance of the vaginal mucous membranes, which can in turn weaken the vaginal flora and leave it more vulnerable. What are yellow flags in dating?

In recent years, dating has become a lot more structured. But lately even the flag system has become a little less straightforward, with the introduction of "beige flags" and "yellow flags". What's the ideal temperature to stay healthy at home?

The World Health Organisation suggests that 18° C is the perfect temperature to set your heating to, but in reality that is just an average. There are a number of variables to take into account. Are you spending more on groceries due to stretchflation?

The subject of today’s episode is the latest questionable practice in retail. "Stretchflation" is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason: it's yet another way to squeeze more money out of consumers. We’ve already talked about shrinkflation on Do You Really Know, which is when you see product sizes reduced but prices stay the same. Since the start of the cost-of-living crisis, we’ve also seen cheapflation, which involves cutting out expensive, high-quality ingredients, and greedflation, which saw food companies hike prices far above the rise in their costs, using inflation as justification. How to make the most out of a rental property?

There are lots of advantages to renting rather than buying but one of the pitfalls is you have to live with your landlord's style choices. But just because you are renting does not mean you can’t adapt it to your own personal style without jeopardising your deposit. So here are some tips and advice about how to put your own flair into a temporary space. First of all, if you do want to make changes like painting walls, adding wallpaper or putting up shelves you need to ask for permission from your landlord. Although these can be aesthetic and useful they can also be pricey and once you move out the landlord might ask you to put things back to how they were so it is worth considering carefully if you really need or want these changes. But there are lots of things you can do without making permanent adjustments to your home. How can I personalise my rental home? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Is palm oil really bad for your health?

We know that palm oil cultivation isn’t great for the environment, but it’s also not the best for our health. Despite this, palm oil production continues to soar, reaching a record 77.5 million tonnes in 2023, primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. It’s the most consumed vegetable oil globally. The main reason is its cost-effectiveness. This vegetable fat is derived from the fruit of oil palm trees through hot pressing, which extracts about 30% lipids. Its smooth, creamy texture is highly valued by manufacturers for use in both food products and cosmetics like shower gels. Additionally, it has no odor or taste, making it ideal for preserving food. What is the Matilda Effect?

Imagine humanity only using half the brains at its disposal to solve the many scientific challenges it faces in the present and future. While such an idea might seem crazy, it’s not so far from reality. Over the years, very few female scientists have got the same level of acclaim as their male counterparts, whether it be in the history books or on award winner lists. As a simple illustration, if you ask someone to name a female scientist, Marie Curie may well be the first name they come up with. Even so, her husband is often referenced as having contributed to her work, and she is rarely referred to by her last name alone. Where did the name Matilda effect come from? Do you have any examples of forgotten female scientists? Should you really drink hot drinks when it’s hot?

It’s known that to beat the heat and avoid dehydration, we need to drink plenty of water. But while some reach for a hot cuppa, others swear by ice-cold beverages, and while this may give you an instant feeling of chill it's sadly just fleeting. The reason being is that our bodies work hard to keep our core temperature steady at around 37°C. So while a cold drink might feel refreshing, it actually dials down our sweat production—the very thing that helps us cool. Plus, super cold drinks can trigger headaches, cramps, and tummy troubles. Should you do the opposite and drink hot beverages? What can you drink to cool down? What if you are not a fan of plain water? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Can naps keep the brain healthy?

If you like to take a short nap during the day you might be doing your brain a favor. According to a study published in the journal Sleep Health in June of 2023, people who have a genetic predisposition to napping regularly have larger brain volumes than those who don’t. This suggests that napping may protect against brain shrinkage, which occurs faster in people with cognitive problems and neurodegenerative diseases. How do you get rid of fruit flies in the kitchen?

These tiny insects, which reproduce at an astonishing rate, often invade our kitchens. They are particularly attracted to damp areas, stagnant water, organic waste, and ripe fruit—especially in warm weather. Fruit flies, or midges, can lay up to 100 eggs a day. While studies indicate that flies can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites, the midges in our homes are generally harmless. Do tongue scrapers actually help with bad breath?

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, our mouths host no fewer than 700 species of microbes, including “germs like bacteria, fungus and more”. Some are helpful in producing vitamins, or aiding in digestion, for example, but others can cause problems like bad breath. Because many of these microbes live on the tongue, recent years have seen increased use of oral hygiene devices specifically designed to clean the top of the tongue. One kind is a tongue scraper. What is cybersickness, the mysterious condition linked to screen use?

You may well have experienced motion sickness or travel sickness in the past. Well, cyber sickness is a modern ailment that follows a similar kind of logic, or rather the opposite logic. Instead of moving while feeling still, like when you’re on a boat or in a car, with cyber sickness you perceive movement while you’re actually still. But the result is the same: your brain fails to adapt to this dissonance, and hence brings on nausea, dizziness, cold sweats, and other balance disorders. What is the Pygmalion effect?

Have you ever wondered how our expectations can impact the way we perceive and interact with others? Well, it’s actually been demonstrated that beliefs and attitudes can lead to outcomes that align with those beliefs, due to what’s known as the Pygmalion effect. 20th century American psychologist Robert Rosenthal coined the term in 1968.
