Ep 152Mechanised Tunnelling and Mining How One Industry is Influencing the Other with Diane Mather
In this episode, we chat with Diane Mather, who specialises in tunnelling. Apart from working for Inland Rail as the design manager, she is also the chair for the Australian Tunnelling Society. She has worked on multiple rail-related tunnelling projects as well as in several mining settings. Diane was introduced to us by Michael Moore having studied together at Camborne School of Mines. She studied for a Geology, Geotechnical, and Tunnelling degree. Diane is on the podcast to discuss all things tunnelling with an emphasis on mining and how they combine and interact. We talk about the main differences and similarities between tunnelling & mining. As well as what technologies and innovation mining and tunnelling have in common. Plus, much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Diane has worked for numerous mines as well as on other types of tunnelling projects. Mining design is temporary compared to infrastructure tunnels. Mine structures are usually easier to build because there is no other infrastructure to work around e.g., sewers. Mechanised tunnel building is a lot faster than drill and blast. Some issues need to be overcome before the use of mechanised tunnelling machines becomes more common in the mining industry. Issues that are discussed in the podcast, Tunnelling is becoming more popular because it reduces the impact infrastructure has on the neighbourhood. Often tunnels are the only practical option in areas of high-density population. Many mining industry innovations have been adopted for tunnelling. Several examples are discussed in the podcast. Mines are increasingly using LIDAR and GIS systems to map and manage their projects. These tools also have a role in managing the relationship with the public. Mines are taking the lead in the use of autonomous vehicles. An approach tunnellers are starting to adopt. Automation is greatly reducing the risks for both industries. For miners transport of their products from the mine is a major issue. A possible solution is discussed. BEST MOMENTS ‘I fly in and out of some of the best mining and infrastructure projects in Australia. ´ ‘The instrumentation, monitoring and geological mapping that´s been used in mining have been implemented in tunnelling.’ ‘A mechanised tunnelling machine is a big, long lead time procurement item.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Diane Mather - QLD Chapter Chair - Australian Tunnelling Society | LinkedIn The Australian Tunnelling Association Website - https://www.ats.org.au/ Details of ATS committee members - https://www.ats.org.au/about-us/committee-members/ VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 151Finland – An Easy Place to Work That is Ripe for Exploration – Insights from James Withall
In this episode, we chat to James Withall, CEO of Rupert Resources who are a junior miner with advanced exploration and near-term production potential in Northern Finland James, a geologist by background has over 20 years of experience in mining. Working in the field and the investment space. We discuss his journey and how Rupert Resources has evolved. Talking about their Ikkari discovery, their Pahtavaara mine, and what potential Finland has as a mining jurisdiction. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rupert Resources is for the most part a mineral exploration company, but they now also working the assets they own. They bought their Northern Finland asset right at the bottom of the market. There is a lot of potential in Northern Finland. It is ripe for large-scale exploration Finland is an easy place to get to and travel around. There is plenty of 100% renewable energy available. Finnish workers work well and are very safety conscious. Finland is no more expensive to work in than places like Canada Being a small company allows you to move fast. There is no bureaucracy to hold you back. They have taken a fund manager approach and applied it to exploration. Rupert Resources' exploration results have been fantastic. They have just raised $48 million, so cash flow is not an issue. The geology of Finland is remarkably similar to West Africa, so the potential for finds is huge. The Ikkari discovery will be out to the market within the next 3 months. Rupert Resources now have new geological maps of their land, which is enabling them to do more focused exploration drills. They picked up another licence in the South, so will be exploring there too. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is a lot more potential in Northern Finland. ´ ‘Our job is to demonstrate the economic potential of whatever we find.’ ‘Finland just haven´t had that really intensive wave of modern commercial exploration.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://rupertresources.com/ Rupert Resources | LinkedIn Twitter - https://twitter.com/RupertResources Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/rupertresources VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 150Why Ferro-Alloy Resources is Perfectly Placed to Ride the Vanadium Wave with Nick Bridgen
In this episode, we chat to Nick Bridgen, Chief Executive at Ferro-Alloy Resources, who is developing a giant vanadium deposit in southern Kazakhstan. Nick is a chartered accountant by background and also studied a degree in Psychology, Statistics, and Physics. His career has been in executive management within the resources industry. So, he is well versed in developing Ferro Alloy Resources to its full potential. Helped by the fact that he has worked in Kazakhstan for an extended period of time. We talk about the exisitng operations and the huge project they are developing. KEY TAKEAWAYS The firm is already profitable and well-funded but there is much, much more to come. 95% of their vanadium assets have not been touched yet. They have already secured all of the funding they need to develop the vanadium extraction side of their business. Ferro-Alloy Resources can extract their vanadium without a concentrator roaster. This means much lower capital and operation costs, which makes them highly competitive. The site already has power, roads, and a nearby workforce. They estimate that by spending about $100 million on phase 1 they will eventually turn over $2 billion across both phases. Vanadium is used to strengthen steel and demand is growing. Where weight is not important, vanadium flow batteries are an attractive proposition. Kazakhstan is now a well-run country, that has actively worked to make mining easier. The by-products the firm is planning to produce, and sell are expected to more than pay for the vanadium production costs. The firm´s small pilot plant has enabled them to develop the expertise they will need to extract the huge reserves of vanadium that they have. Their small pilot plant enabled them to discover that concentrate processing is also highly profitable. They are also currently upgrading and expanding their concentrates processing business. The feasibility study is due to be released in the first half of next year. BEST MOMENTS ‘That could increase the demand for vanadium by 50 or even 100%. ´ ‘We will be able to take advantage of the growth in demand of the world and supply it at a cost that doesn't kill that demand.’ ‘We are now fully funded.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website – http://www.ferro-alloy.com Email - [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 149Increasing Production Organically and Building for the Long Term with Ravi Sood
In this episode, we chat to Ravi Sood, Chairman of Galane Gold who is a gold producer and explorer with mining operations and exploration tenements in Botswana, South Africa, and the US. Ravi is an entrepreneur with many business interests. He tells us about Galane Gold, its future prospects, and some of the other interests that Ravi is pursuing with the mining and resources space. We also talk about macroeconomics and what is happening in today’s financial world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gold is unique. Even in today´s digital world, it has a strong future. There is plenty of room in the industry for smaller operators. Mines that do not fit well into large companies’ profiles represent opportunities for other types of owners. Galane Gold likes to buy working mines that can be invested in and grown. Established mines come with strong working relationships and networks, which helps to get things done fast. There is usually also infrastructure already in place that can easily be upgraded. Transitioning their Botswana gold mine from open cast to underground has added decades of productive life to the asset. Galane Gold funds its own projects. The company is heavily insider-owned. Their key goal is to create value for the owners, so they take fewer risks. The economic situation we have now is mathematically intractable. The world cannot run the same playbook that got us out of trouble after WWII. Inflation will hurt a lot of people, but it is likely to be the way out of the current financial crisis. Precious metals and a few other assets tend to perform well in inflationary environments. Galane Gold´s current focus is ramping up production across their sites. They are also diversifying into solar and wind production. BEST MOMENTS ‘Gold has played its role for a very long time, and even in this digital future, it is going to continue to have a role. ´ ‘I think gold´s going higher and it is going to go there pretty quickly.’ ‘If you´re taking something on, make sure that it is worthwhile.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Ravi Sood - Chairman - Galane Gold Ltd. | LinkedIn Website – http://galanegold.com/ Email – [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. In this episode, we chat to Shaun Bunn, Managing Director of Empire Metals who is an AIM-listed exploration and resource development company with a multi-commodity project portfolio comprising gold and copper interests in Australia, Georgia, and Austria. With a metallurgy background, Shaun has over 35 years of industry experience in technical and executive management positions working across many jurisdictions including Australia, Africa, and Europe and has recently taken up the hot seat with Empire Metals and will give us an overview of the company and its prospects. KEY TAKEAWAYS Empire Metals have just acquired the Central Menzies gold prospect. Over a million ounces have already been pulled from that area. Empire Metals has a particularly strong and experienced board. The explosion of mining in the WA area is beneficial has created additional issues. There are shortages of drilling rigs and skilled labour in Australia. Both challenges take time and planning to overcome. CoVid is still making the labour shortage harder to solve. The shortage of construction workers is a huge issue for those building new facilities. Empire Metals are planning to build up a portfolio of projects to extend their base and protect themselves from market changes. They are particularly looking at those projects that will generate cash flow. The project flow rate within the WA market is gathering momentum. New science and technologies are uncovering new deposits in old mining areas and making exploiting them viable. The plan is to exploit their current tenant base, which has huge potential, rather than overstretch themselves. That includes the Eclipse project. BEST MOMENTS ‘we've got a strong, well-balanced board. ´ ‘the shortage of construction workers is going to impact the mining industry.’ ‘there are large areas of Western Australia, particularly in the Eastern goldfields, that are under-explored.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Empiremetalsltd Contact form - https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/contact/ Shaun Bunn LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/shaun-bunn-3a5b7829 VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 146The Multiple Growing Streams of Demand for Silver Explained by Michael DiRienzo
In this episode, we chat with Michael DiRienzo, Executive Director of The Silver Institute. A non-profit international association that draws its membership from across the breadth of the silver industry. Established in 1971, the Institute serves as the industry’s voice in increasing public understanding of the many uses and values of silver. Michael has been a long-standing member of the silver institute and talks about all things silver, trends, and the future of silver. KEY TAKEAWAYS Silver is an indispensable metal, with many important uses. The Silver Institute is involved in programmes that encourage more use of silver. As well as developing new products and markets. The Silver Institute provides reliable reports about the silver market. Including free ones and specialist information about specific sectors e.g., solar and the automotive industries. Silver production, supply, and demand all dipped because of the CoVid crisis. The photovoltaic market bucked the trend, with demand growing by 2% despite CoVid. Investment in silver also grew in 2020 and did so in double figures. For 2021, it should remain high. Demand for mined silver is set to grow and production is expected to increase by about 8%. The 2020 silver squeeze was triggered by social media. It helped to bring a fresh wave of new eyes to the silver investment market. Demand from the automotive, electronics, solar, silverware, and jewellery sectors all look set to be strong in 2021. The reopening of economies and accelerated vaccination in industrialized countries is a good thing for silver. Silver has an important role to play in decarbonisation. If something has an on/off switch, it almost certainly contains silver. The automation of vehicles represents a big opportunity for silver. The outlook for silver is extremely good across most areas, the institute´s free survey report explains why that is the case. BEST MOMENTS ‘Silver is an indispensable metal. ´ ‘it did create a whole new wave of fresh eyes on the silver investment market.’ ‘We like to think of silver as one of the decarbonisation metals.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://www.silverinstitute.org Silver Institute Global Survey - https://www.silverinstitute.org/all-world-silver-surveys/ Silver Institute Twitter - https://twitter.com/silverinstitute VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 145Interview with Chris Gerteisen of Nova Minerals
In this episode we chat to Chris Gerteisen, Executive Director and CEO of Nova Minerals, a minerals explorer and developer focused on gold and lithium projects in North America. These projects include Nova’s Estelle Gold Project in Alaska and the company’s majority-owned Snow Lakes Resources, which is a lithium project in Canada. Chris is a geologist by background, with 20 years of experience managing and advancing complex and challenging resource projects across North America, Australia, and Asia for the likes of Newmont, Oxiana, and Pan Aust so has a good pedigree behind him. We talk about the Korbel Main deposit at the Estelle Project as well as details of the drilling planned for Isabella, You Beauty, and Cathedral throughout the Korbel Valley. We chat about their lithium project as well as their stake in RotorX Aircraft company which is exciting. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a new Alaskan Gold Rush happening. Alaska is very pro-mining. So it is relatively easy to set up and run profitable mines there. Currently, all of Nova Mineral´s Alaskan mining claims are on state land, which makes permitting easier. They have 324 square kilometers of claims to explore, in a very productive area. Nova Minerals is a full year-round operator - despite Alaska´s inclement winters. As well as their producing mines they also have 15 other prospects that are at various stages of advancement. The use of XRT ore sorting and milling has enabled them to upgrade extraction by up to 10 times on some materials. Our resources are very undervalued compared to those of our peers, so there are some opportunities there. The lithium project has 11.1 million tonnes at 1% lithium. Using hydropower enables their Canadian operation to be a low carbon project. Interest in RotorX´s automated electronic-powered aircraft is growing fast. The development of their heavy lift drones is progressing well. As is their electric copter-based urban transport solution. Nova Minerals is just getting started. The best is yet to come. Ep 144Interview with Hu Fleming – Water Management – Meeting the Challenges Now and in the Future
In this episode, we chat with Hu Fleming, an expert, and senior executive in water management. He was the head of water management for Anglo American. Here, he talks about all things water within the mining industry. We are going to cover water topics that are maybe not obvious to many in the industry. Things that you should be aware of when making everyday decisions. Water will become much scarcer as we move into a commodities super-cycle. So, this episode is a must-listen. Enabling you to learn how to help preserve as much water as possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hu has been working in the mining water treatment technology field for 40 years. Being involved in the extraction of all kinds of commodities. Water represents around 15% of the cost of mining. A figure that surprises most mining firms. Some mines have had to shut over water issues. Juniors and mid-tiers are increasingly being asked about water usage plans by would-be investors. Shareholders increasingly insist on the ethical use of water. Climate change is impacting the water supply. Supply levels can easily change drastically during the decades-long life of a mine. Water scarcity is the biggest challenge. Discharge issues are becoming increasingly important. Resource recovery is heavily dependent on water. Fortunately, new technologies and processes are helping to reduce this dependency. Water extraction of rare earths from coal waste is now possible and starting to look viable. Water permits are decreasing at a time when mining is expanding. Zero liquid discharge mines are possible. Mining companies need to be good neighbours and work with other associations/businesses to better manage the available water resources. Mines need to be good neighbours. If they are not, they get regulated to oblivion. BEST MOMENTS ‘Miners discovered a bit late that water was so significant to their overall financial sustainability. ´ ‘Shareholders have become very activist…they recognise that water generally is the largest flashpoint for communities.’ ‘Every mine should be able to reuse every cubic metre of water that they have.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 142Coking Coal Mining in Zimbabwe and Gold Mining in Mali with Carl Esprey
In this episode, we chat to Carl Esprey, Executive Director of Contango Holdings who have a large stake in the Lubu Coal Project which is a high-value coking coal project in Zimbabwe and also has their Garalo gold project in Mali. Carl is a qualified Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst and has a long career in the natural resource investment and development sector. He gives us an overview of both projects and a better understanding of the coking coal sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recently there´s been strong price movement within the commodity complex in general. Contango started out looking at assets that were not greenfield assets. In particular, projects that have resource statements and some sort of mine scoping study. With bulk minerals, Contango only opens mines when they have secured a demonstrable offtake agreement. CoVid has made it hard for people to visit assets, which has slowed the rate at which deals can be closed. Demand for coking coal is strong. In some mines, it is now possible to mine just the coking coal. Instead of having to move and backfill the thermal coal too. The Garalo gold project is probably way bigger than initially thought. Garalo is being studied in more detail. At which point, they will tell the market more and decide what size mill to build. No royalty agreements will be signed until the size of the resource is fully understood. They are hoping to pick up neighbouring properties in the vicinity of Garalo. BEST MOMENTS ‘In the case of bulk minerals, like coal, we won´t build mines until we have a demonstrable offtake agreement. ´ ‘Coking coal is up about 35% since we listed.’ ‘You want to build a large mill and feed it all in from satellite deposits.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 141Opportunities for Generalist Investors Looking for Diversity with Keith Floyd
In this episode, we chat to Kyle Floyd, founder, chairman, and CEO of Vox Royalty who is a high-growth precious metals royalty and streaming company with a portfolio of over 50 royalties and streams spanning nine jurisdictions and are one of the fastest-growing companies in the royalty sector. Kyle is an investment banker with a background in the mining sector. We hear about his journey in growing this royalty company. Including why it’s different than the other royalty companies out there in this space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kyle created Vox as an outlet for generalist investors who wanted to invest in the commodity sector. Vox focuses on what they call third-party royalties. For the last 15 years, royalty companies have outperformed essentially every commodity-based benchmark you can compare them to. Royalty companies take cash from an operations revenue. Royalty companies do not participate when the operation needs cash replenishment. Vox has invested in establishing deal sourcing agents across the world. Enabling them to speak to asset owners first. They mix and diversify their assets as a way of reducing risk. BEST MOMENTS ‘The issue was that the risk-adjusted returns in the small-cap mining sector really didn't stack up for what investors expected to realise. ´ ‘Royalty companies have outperformed essentially every commodity-based benchmark that you can compare them to.’ ‘I think we´re in a period that´s going to be very, very bullish for commodities.’ GUEST RESOURCES Vox Royalty: [email protected] https://www.voxroyalty.com/ https://twitter.com/vox_royalty https://www.linkedin.com/company/voxroyalty/ https://www.facebook.com/VOXRoyalty/?ref=bookmarks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_bgGUoAaFFyMNN8E388Oeg?view_as=subscriber Kyle Floyd: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyle-floyd-4321004/ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 140Why Despite Peaks and Troughs Mining is Always a Great Industry to Work in with John Ryan
In this episode, we chat to John Ryan, CEO & Director of Gold Express Mines, a multi-asset mineral resource company focused primarily on the acquisition, exploration, evaluation, and development of precious metal properties across the US. John is a mine engineer by background and also studied finance enabling him to start, develop and operate a handful of natural resource companies during his career. We chat about his career and about many of the projects he has worked on with a handful becoming a success. KEY TAKEAWAYS John has worked in the industry for decades. Filling a range of roles. He has been involved in most forms of mining. Gold Express is the result of the movements in gold created off the back of CoVid. John plans to be drilling for various minerals in Western Montana, this year. Mining is cycles of boom and bust. Part of the reason dusting off old properties works so well. Make full use of any historical data that exists. This is very inexpensive exploration. With any property, the first step is to look for flaws rather than discovering them after you have spent a lot of money. Having the right people in place at the right time is essential. Many in the industry are nearing retirement. There is not yet a new generation ready to step up, creating a skill gap. Electric vehicles and climate change pressures is likely to lead to soaring demand for copper, uranium, cobalt, and other minerals. BEST MOMENTS ‘Good old cold calling can help you to reach the right person. ´ ‘California is not called the golden state for nothing, it has produced 120-150 million ounces.’ ‘People are making use of databases and satellite data more.’ GUEST RESOURCES Email - [email protected] LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/321johnryan VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 139The Future of the European Lithium Market with Keith Coughlan
In this episode, we chat to Keith Coughlan, Managing Director at European Metals who is an Australian and UK listed mineral exploration and development company advancing a Lithium/Tin Project in the Czech Republic. Keith’s background is in stockbroking and funds management and has been involved in the funding, promoting, and acquisitions of resource companies listed on various stock exchanges like the ASX, AIM, and TSX during his career. We talk about the European Lithium market and the Cinovec lithium project that European Metals are developing in the Czech Republic KEY TAKEAWAYS Cinovec has the largest lithium resource in the EU. Europe wants electric vehicles and is actively building a battery industry to facilitate this. No country wants to rely on a long-distance lithium supply chain controlled by other countries, e.g., China. The environmental impact assessment is a critical path item in terms of developing the project. The Cinovec facility has excellent environmental and ESG credentials. Using a historic mine, processing underground, slurry pipe transportation greatly reduces disruption and the environmental impact. Local people are familiar with mining and are largely happy to see the mine re-open. There is no way that the supply of lithium can keep up with demand. At least not initially, so prices are highly likely to rise. BEST MOMENTS ‘Cinovec is about the fourth largest hard rock lithium resource in the world. ´ ‘Measuring our ESG is an ongoing process.’ ‘The demand for lithium in Europe is going to grow very very quickly.’ ‘Lithium needs to occur in the right concentration for it to be economically viable.’ GUEST RESOURCES Twitter - @CzechLithium Website - www.europeanmet.com Email - [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 138The Ethos That FuelsTectonic Metal´s Success with Tony Reda of Tectonic Metals
In this episode, we chat to Tony Reda, President, and CEO of Tectonic Metals who are a mineral exploration company focused on the acquisition, exploration, discovery, and development of mineral resources from district-scale projects in politically stable jurisdictions that have the potential to host world-class orebodies in Canada and US. Tony talks about Tectonic Metals and their Tibbs and Seventymile projects and what the future holds for the company. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tony´s first big discovery was the Coffee Gold Project that was later acquired for $520 million. Focusing on risk management brings many benefits. Targeting gneissic rock with the same host rock as Pogo has uncovered numerous new drill sites. Re-exploring areas using new approaches is also producing good results. Tectonic Metal’s focus is on working alongside native corporations with the backing of indigenous people. Provided the native population is pro-mining working on their land often results in a streamlined process. Making a positive difference to the community during the first stage of mining is a win-win. Having a diverse team is important. For example, they have an environmental biologist, which brings a different perspective. BEST MOMENTS ‘We put an emphasis on risk management.’ ‘The jurisdiction is important not only from a geological perspective but also from a government social perspective.’ ‘Part of our process is to go meet with the local communities.’ ‘Investors need to do more due diligence on the risk side.’ GUEST RESOURCES LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Instagram Ticker symbols - Tectonic Metals Inc. Ep 137West African Gold Mining Opportunities with Bert Monro
In the episode, we chat to Bert Monro, CEO of Cora Gold who are a UK-based AIM-listed company that is a gold exploration company with a focus on gold exploration in Mali and Senegal. Bert has a strong background in Africa having spent over 10 years at Hummingbird Resources in senior management, so has a great understanding of how to develop gold mining assets in those regions. He shares what Cora is currently focusing on, explaining why and elaborating on the opportunities that still exist in the area and how investors and others can tap into them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Cora is mainly a grassroots explorer making discoveries in West Africa. The feasibility study for Sanankoro Gold Discovery is on track for delivery later in the year. This project is fully financed, but investment opportunities still exist for the project. Exploratory drills will be complete in July. So far, the results are excellent. Much of the site is covered by free digging material, keeping extraction costs low. Cora has 5 permits in the Sankara project area, but they also have permits in other parts of West Africa. The engagement with the local community is good and ESG projects are progressing fast. Cora is one of the first companies to get its exploration permit renewed, post the new mining code. The pandemic threw up some curveballs, but the team has adapted well. BEST MOMENTS ‘The thing we really like about Sanakoro is that you´ve got a lot of oxide material. ´ ‘CoVid didn´t change the way we operated the business because we were working remotely before.’ ‘Look to build the lowest cost operation possible … to maximize your margin whatever the gold price.’ ‘I think gold equities offer investors great leverage into the gold price. ´ GUEST RESOURCES Twitter LinkedIn Cora Gold website [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Graham talks about the potash industry as a whole and what Emmerson’s plans are moving forward through to construction and production. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every plant in the world needs six macronutrients in order to grow - phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen, sulphur, magnesium and calcium Around nine global producers provide, collectively, 90% of the world's supply of potash, meaning that this essential ingredient only comes from a handful of companies. Potash is a vital ingredient in the world of fertilisers - meaning that the world's supply of crops is reliant on this resource. Mining seems to have acquired a negative image in the media, but we must remember that everything in the world is either grown or mined/extracted. BEST MOMENTS 'Every plant in the world needs six macronutrients' 'There's around 80 million tons of potash sold every year' 'We globally have to produce 60% more food by 2050, than we produce today' 'We're very strong on the environment' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Graham Clarke LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/graham-clarke-b6954544/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. He is the author of a book called “Uranium Insights” and also the chair of the nuclear fuel demand working group within the World Nuclear Association so is entrenched in the sector. We discuss why the world needs uranium and why it’s been in a bear market since the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 and what happened since then. We talk about the supply and demand issues and why the price is very low to its all-time high. It’s an interesting episode packed with knowledge if you want to know more about uranium as it enters a bull market and why uranium is needed for global energy supply. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having run a project for over 15 years has allowed Bannerman to create a foothold, not just in terms of relationships, but knowledge base. Refining projects means that projects become more streamlined in terms of development hurdles. This can then be expanded back outwards. Helping people is easy, but having a truly transformative effect upon people’s lives is more difficult. That is why choosing the site of projects can allow true change for countries that need it. Today, there is a pronounced deficit in uranium, which is being met by draw-down in excess inventories. BEST MOMENTS ‘The nuclear energy sector is a very conservative sector’ ‘We have a degree of pedigree in terms of consistency’ ‘You can have such a big impact on so many lives’ ‘We had a 10% hole punched out of demand’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Brandon Munro LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonmunro/?originalSubdomain=au Brandon Munro Twitter - https://twitter.com/brandon_munro?lang=en ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ryan is a geologist by trade and a wealth of experience in mining and mineral exploration for base and precious metals within the region so is poised to develop this into a huge and profitable mine. KEY TAKEAWAYS The technology to process copper oxide is a fairly new technology, developed over the last thirty to forty years. Mining is close to the hearts of Idaho's communities. They understand the economic benefits and the technologies involved, which has equated to a lot of support from the community and vice versa. The Biden administration is behind sweeping reforms in environmental care, which requires a lot of copper, cobalt and other base metals required for electrification. In northern Nevada, lies the heart of gold and silver production in the US. Other larger operations are located to the south, which places Phoenix at the heart of American mining. BEST MOMENTS 'Copper is near and dear to my heart' 'Mining is very deep-rooted in the community' 'The new administration in Washington DC is very pro-green energy' 'We are positioned very well in the copper market' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Phoenix Copper Ltd - https://phoenixcopperlimited.com/management ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. We also discuss what advice would you give young women aspiring to join the mining sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mining is an evolving industry. There aren't a lot of women, but for those organisation that do see the value in diversity and inclusivity, the hiring of women has proved to be a huge benefit. Mining is an industry in which we can always do better - we can always branch out and take chances and develop in a variety of ways. The best careers in mining are those driven by purpose and intention. This allows you to best navigate through the challenges you will face in mining. Women need to stand on their own judgment, and not emulate the leadership styles of me. If women are confident, then they are successful. BEST MOMENTS 'I started to become more aware of how my gender plays a role in the industry' 'What are the current barriers, and how can we get more women into organisations?' Ep 127The Vision For The Future - with Julian Treger
In this episode we chat to Julian Treger, CEO of Anglo Pacific who are a global natural resources royalty company listed on both the London Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange and aiming to become a leading natural resources company through investing in high-quality projects in preferred jurisdictions with trusted counterparties and underpinned by strong ESG principles. With a diverse portfolio of assets in well established mining jurisdictions and a strong balance sheet to fund new acquisitions, it has a good base from which to grow. We discuss the recent acquisition of the Voisey Bay cobalt stream transaction and how it positions the company going forward. KEY TAKEAWAYS We learn from those who have walked the path before us. There are always generations that go before, that can hand down the lessons of the past in order to better secure a future. The best people to surround one's self with are those who can provide solutions in a positive way. It's not enough to simply point out challenges and issues. The mining sector is shifting from being a 19th century, industrial stereotype, to an integral part of cleanliness and responsibility. When the aerospace sector recovers from the impact of COVID, there will be a sharp need for more in the cobalt space, in which Anglo Pacific is well positioned. BEST MOMENTS 'I had some beginner's luck' 'That quarter of a million dollar investment has led to a half-billion dollar royalty' 'I want to know how things can be done, not why they can't be done' 'We want to be part of the story of mining in the 21st century' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Julian Treger Twitter - https://twitter.com/juliantreger?lang=en Anglo Pacific - https://www.anglopacificgroup.com/leadership/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 126An Investing And Speculating Masterclass- with Rick Rule
In this episode we chat to the legendary investor and speculator Rick Rule who has a 45 year career track record in the commodities and resources space, so knows a thing or two about investments and commodity lifecycles. Rick shares his wealth of knowledge, wisdom and humour around commodity investing and speculating. He gives us an update on current commodity markets as a whole especially with the 10 year US treasury rate gradually increasing and what impact this will have on commodities and the industry plus his views in the junior market space, M&A activity and what commodity is most under valued at this point in time. KEY TAKEAWAYS The increase in the gold price from $1100 to $1900 over the past decade, coincided with the increase on the US tenure, falling from 250 basis points to 60 basis points. Gold prices and gold equities will be extremely sensitive in the coming years to the US tenure rate. It's not just the nominal rate, though. This is the real rate. If the interest rate continues to rise, including consumer debt and mortgage rates, then the impact will be fascinating to observe. We can expect a reduction in economic vitality. Physical gold is a high vale relative-to-weight item, so if you are running out, you can easily transport it from around the world. Silver is very different in this regard. BEST MOMENTS 'Retirement for me is a re-direction' 'I underestimated the impact of liquidity and quantitative easing' 'May you live in interesting times...' Ep 125Digging For Success In West African Operations - with Alfred Baku
In this episode we chat to Alfred Baku, Executive Vice President and Head of West Africa for GOLD FIELDS, who are a globally diversified gold producer with a focus on mechanised underground and open-pit mining. They are currently the world’s seventh largest gold producer and nine operating mines in Australia, Peru, Ghana (including the Asanko JV) and South Africa Alfred is a mine engineer by background has a wealth of mining expertise having worked in Australia before taking the helm for Goldfield nearly 14 years ago. We chat how Goldfields has developed as a company and in particular their Ghanian operations with reference to technology, major project implementation and how they coped with the pandemic plus more. KEY TAKEAWAYS We can make sure that our careers operate at their full potential by always giving our best. Hard work and diligence will be noticed, and promotions will come as a result. Cultural differences can be tricky to overcome, especially those that teach their youth not to approach their elders with problems or challenges. Goldfields are the seventh biggest mining operation in the world. In the West African region it accounts for 37% of production in the region. Flexible working has been introduced in order to allow Goldfields people to still work and operate, but safely. Goldfields is always looking for ways to change the landscape. Ep 124A Conversation With The SilverChartist - Steve Penny
In the episode we chat to Steve Penny, a full-time trader specialising in silver, gold, and uranium stocks who I’ve been personally following for the last 6 months or so. Steve is a full time investor and newsletter writer and is known in circles as “The SilverChartist” where he shares useful tips on investing and current market trends across a handful of commodities. I wanted to get Steve on the show because speaking to clients/candidates about investing, I was surprised to find that some who invest in stocks, don’t actually invest in their own industry so though it would be good to get Steve on every few months to give us an update on the market but more importantly, educate us all on some of the things we should be looking at in terms of investing in mining stocks. We talk about why it’s a good time like never before to invest in mining stocks like gold, silver and uranium and the technicals around the 50 and 200 day moving averages. He also gives some gold, silver and uranium stocks tips that he invests in so don’t miss that. Sign up to Steve’s Free Newsletter here: https://bit.ly/3fmbMDa KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone needs to own some physical metal outside of the banking system. Currently, silver presents a far more attractive investment opportunity than gold. We should try to own a basket of mining stocks and try to hold it for the next two to five years. This is the best way to make this investment pay in the long term. 100% of tax receipts will soon be going towards interest on the debt. The big variable will be the number on the interest rate at the time. In the case of Bitcoin, there are only a finite supply of them, and when people want to own them, the price goes up. Silver is in the same position. BEST MOMENTS 'I couldn't be more grateful to have this opportunity to share what I'm passionate about' 'In my heart I want to help as many people as possible' 'That's why it's good to have some help from someone who does this full time' 'There's no alternative to physical silver' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes The SilverChartist - https://www.silverchartist.com/pro Sign up to Steve’s Free Newsletter here: https://bit.ly/3fmbMDa ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Gavin has a geology and finance background and we discuss his journey and how his career path developed from a geologist to now a CFO. We also get an update on CAML’s Kazakhstan and Macedonia’s operations and what is the outlook of the company over the next few years. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is always a slight friction between engineering and geology disciplines. Successful miners who conquer both pursuits are well placed for almost any career in mining. Experience is everything in mining. There are many opportunities for new initiates to mining, and a world of experimentation and exploration to unearth. Knowledge and experience give you credibility. Even for those who wish to change lanes in mining, the benefits of applying yourself are numerous. Engineers and geologists are known for their mathematical know-how, which can be useful if they wish to transition to the finance side of things. Improvements are constantly being made to the health and safety side of mining operations, as well as investment into the transition from cave level mining method, to the fill method, which also improves safety. In this episode we chat to Bernard Aylward, CEO of Kodal Minerals, a junior explorer with a primary focus on the immediate exploration and definition of the lithium mineralisation at the Bougouni Project in southern Mali. The Company also holds a highly prospective suite of gold assets in West Africa. KEY TAKEAWAYS Learning and development should be sought out and accepted wherever possible, Mining is all about the personal journey and what we can take from it. Discovery and exploration are the driving forces behind Kodal's values. It is focussed upon West Africa, and devoted to being a valuable asset in the green energy revolution. West Africa is attractive to junior explorers due to its success when it comes to results. Places such as Ghana are turning into world leaders when it comes to gold. A significant expense of the production process is in the transportations side, as well as the refining process, including concentration. In this episode we chat to Danny Callow, CEO of African Gold Group who are a Canadian exploration and development company with its focus on developing a gold platform in West Africa. Danny is a mining engineer by background and has worked across Africa for many years in many jurisdictions, so has a wealth of knowledge and experience. We discuss African Gold Group and what Mali is like as a mining jurisdiction, although overcoming and challenging the political and economic instability, corruption and the list goes on, and what many believe. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mining is an industry in which knowledge and experience become essential components in rising through the ranks. We must put in the hard yards before we can tell others what to do. Mining as a pursuit has not really changed in its central concept, since its inception. Technology and advancements make it less hazardous, but we are still taking things from the ground. Working successfully is about working hard, but it is also about having fun wherever possible. Mining allows us to do this. The road network into Mali is a little rough. This makes logistics something of a challenge, including river crossings. But the infrastructure is getting better, which should make for more expedient work there. Ep 119Tracking The Trends Report - with Andrew Swart
In this episode we chat to Andrew Swart, Global Mining and Metals Leader at Deloitte who has been on the podcast a few times and discusses a recent report they released around Annual Tracking the Trends Report - closing the trust deficit. KEY TAKEAWAYS The World Economic Forum put out a report in 2020 which stated that trust was the number one issue facing the mining industry. The mining industry has the potential to drive huge amounts of job creation in large parts of the world, and yet it struggles to nurture and locate talent. The mining sector's response to COVID has been world-leading. Investment has continually been made in poorer areas and communities, and infrastructure has remained effective and agile. Manufacturers are now backward-integrating into mining projects, as they can clearly recognise that mineral production is the future for the planet in so many ways. BEST MOMENTS 'We're very excited by the feedback from the report so far!' 'The mining industry is at a very critical juncture' 'This is an industry that's done an excellent job in handling COVID 19' 'A lot of this is around the adjacent industries in the value chain' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Andrew Swart LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewfswart/?originalSubdomain=ca Tracking The Trends Report - https://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/insights/industry/mining-and-metals/tracking-the-trends.html ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 118#118 DD - Mining Development In Ghana - with Eric Asubonteng
In this episode we chat to Eric Asubonteng, MD of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine who are an independent, global gold mining company with a diverse, high-quality portfolio of operations, projects and exploration activities across ten countries on four continents. They are the 3rd largest gold producer globally and the largest on the African continent. Eric is also the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, so would be interesting to hear more about that, and how mining is developing in Ghana and in the African market and what lessons can be learnt. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mining is a sector with many pursuits, and which can provide experience on many levels, no matter the role in which we find ourselves. Mining is a hugely productive enterprise. It can provide practical and exciting experience from the start, and huge opportunities in areas that would, perhaps, have not been thought productive. Mining can produce lasting, positively impactful change, providing opportunity and revitalisation to communities and humanity. Ghana has a long and rich mining history. Some operations have been running since the 19th century, and so have contributed to a rich heritage. This will continue. BEST MOMENTS 'As a management accountant I got to understand the business more and more' 'My interest in mining is because of the practical nature' 'You see the real contribution that mining can make' 'The mining industry is a key lever, that if harnessed properly can work as a catalyst to drive significant change' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Eric Asubonteng LinkedIn - https://gh.linkedin.com/in/eric-asubonteng-98543914 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 117Mining In Papua New Guinea - with Matt Salthouse
In this episode we chat to Matt Salthouse, Chief Executive Officer at Kainantu Resources, an Asia-Pacific focused gold mining company with two highly prospective gold projects in a premier mining region, the high-grade Kainantu gold district of Papua New Guinea (PNG). We talk about their recent listing on the TSX and their relationships with K92 Mining. Matt has a background in law and has wealth of experience in the mining industry, so we chat about what's been happening in PNG with many companies facing challenges with the government. KEY TAKEAWAYS The legal aspect of mining always comes during the early stages, when operations must take a commercial, corporate approach to planning. Jurisdictions in different countries differ wildly, but there are foundational elements that remain similar across the board. Generally, more developed countries lead the charge on implementing new measures and legalities. In places such as Japan, benefits are carefully weighed against the needs of the population, and mining operations are far more selectively permitted to operate. In Papua New Guinea, the overall resource industry must be expanded. This is reflected in the country's eagerness to encourage outside concerns and infrastructure BEST MOMENTS 'If you take a corporate philosophy to it, it gives you a base to wrap a company around the project' 'All of these initiatives have a commercial aspect to them' 'People and governments should have a greater say in what comes from the benefits of projects' 'Clearly there is a desire to encourage junior exploration in PNG' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Kainantu Resources - https://kainanturesources.com/?page_id=1625 Matt Salthouse LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-salthouse-19134048/?originalSubdomain=sg ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 115The Global Energy Challenge - with Frank Fannon
In the episode we speak to Frank Fannon, Assistant Secretary of State for Energy & Resources for the US government. Frank has a colourful background, working in both the government and in the mining industry around public policy with a track record of assessing complex policy, legal and regulatory issues around energy and resources. An avid listener of the podcast, Frank discusses the global energy challenges we are faced with and how he sees the global energy transitions unfolding and what this means for the mining sector. We also discuss the Energy Resource Governance Initiative that Frank and his team are initiating with global partners around the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS US mining operations are seen as an extension of diplomacy. Therefore it is incumbent upon all new global operations to act with care, concern and responsibility. Understanding a country's ambition and vision for energy is a key responsibility of Frank's department. Once this is ascertained, work must be done to bridge the gap between where they are currently, and how hey can achieve these goals. One of the main challenges is to convince the world that despite pulling out from certain climate agreements, that the US is still focussed upon delivering new, positive energy initiatives. Significant investment has been made in renewable energy sources. Simultaneously oil, coal and gas have seen a decline in terms of investment. COVID has seen an acceleration in both of these trends. Ep 114Improving The World's Environmental Systems - with Henrik Frijs
In this episode Rob talks with Henrik Frijs, Head of Sales & Marketing at EHS Data - a world-leading Environmental Data Management company providing environmental data systems to the mining industry. Henrik is an experienced environmental specialist who explains how mining companies can improve their environmental systems and processes through some of their technology, products and solutions. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main industries being served by EHS's data system are landfill organisations, which has now grown organically into the mining sector. Data is currently being used effectively to serve environmental concerns in sectors such as power generation, metal processing, smelting and other related industries. All mining has an effect upon the environment. It is the responsibility of the operation, under regulation, to adhere to the restoration and impact assessment of the production. Later, accurate reporting and measurement is crucial. Operations must seek to replace the more manual procedures that are currently in place. These restrict growth, and can never be an all-encompassing solution. BEST MOMENTS 'Mining is the main industry that we serve' 'Any mining activity is a disturbance to the environment' 'Data can only provide a platform' 'When we engage with a mining company, we know very well what it is, and can come with advice on how to manage the data' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes EHS Data - https://ehsdata.com/tag/henrik-frijs/ Henrik Frijs LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/henrik-m-frijs-1b09333/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 113A Conversation With James Rogers Of Clarity Gold
In the episode we chat to James Rogers, CEO of Clarity Gold who are a junior miner focussing on the acquisition and exploration of overlooked and under-financed gold properties in around Canada. We chat about the junior mining space in the region, and about the company's flagship asset - what is so great about the Abitibi, and why this geology/location is important. KEY TAKEAWAYS Exploration is about thinking differently, and about looking for the value to be found in new projects and most importantly, new ways of thinking. The next milestones for Clarity as they move forward are to advance explorations by focussing efforts into high-grade projects. The junior sector in Clarity's area of speciality is thriving now. Deposits are attractive as are projects. The gold price is strong and Quebec is a positive environment in which to operate. The Coronavirus lockdown situation has not affected the way in which Clarity have operated, in that drilling has continued and cannot be done remotely. What has changed are the factors outside of the projects. BEST MOMENTS 'I'm a resource professional who didn't want to become a resource professional in the first place' 'My time is almost entirely spent with Clarity and moving along' 'We got more excited as we dug deeper' 'It's our job now to take this and expand it, and rethink the story!' Ep 112Material Specialisation in Graphite with Shishir Poddar of Tirupati Graphite
In this episode we chat to Shishir Poddar, Chairman & Managing Director of Tirupati Graphite. Shishir is a fully integrated specialist graphite and graphene producer, with operations in Madagascar and India. The company has conditionally raised £6 million with institutional and professional investors and have recently listed on the London Stock Exchange. We talk about the recent float and more about the company. A few listeners wanted to know more about the graphite market so we cover this and why they are critical material in a number of sustainable applications and what lies ahead in the graphite market in the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS We chose Madagascar because it’s some of the best graphite available in the world with the largest crystal size. Only the London and Australia markets understand the graphite space and we are well connected to the London market and good support. Graphite is a crystalline form of carbon and its properties mean it has over 150 different applications. Each application has very specific requirements of the material meaning that the dynamics of how it is processed change. Our production is 80,000 tonnes of production per year and the global graphite market is currently 1.2million tonnes. There is a small amount of graphite in everyone’s lives, it’s in your phones, you cannot make steel without graphite or high-quality copper wire and the brakes on a car use graphite for heat dissipation. Graphite is around us in many different ways and it is in anything that requires thermal management. BEST MOMENTS ‘Graphite has very diverse properties and uses in everyone’s daily lives’ ‘It’s a material specialisation area’ ‘We have a vision of being a global leader in the graphite market’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Tirupati Graphite Shishir Poddar LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 111The Challenges In Graphite - with Mike Venter
In this episode, we chat with Mike Venter, an experienced exploration geologist whose worked in a wide range of commodities from a corporate, junior and private companies, although he specialises more in Battery/Critical/New Technology materials like graphite and lithium and their impact on new energy efficiency and infrastructure. We discuss the importance of graphite in batteries, what are the different types found, and the challenges the industry faces. Also lithium’s role in batteries and what has happened with supply/demand more recently. We discuss other minerals like Magnesium, Nickel and Cobalt and their importance in the green economy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity, and fortunately it is relatively inert. This makes its applications numerous and much sought after. With the rapid growth of electric vehicles and portable technologies, graphite based materials are becoming more and more important to produce. China has traditionally been the world's largest producer of flake graphite, and they continue to dominate the global market in terms of production. Therefore they largely control the pricing. Whether or not the graphite going into anodes is clean is an ongoing area of investigation. Many companies are responding by producing their own anode materials, so as to reduce dependence on China, and to be able to create their own environmental trails. BEST MOMENTS 'Defining a graphite resource is all about quality' 'Graphite is the go-to material for the anode of your battery' 'It's all about quality, and being able to produce a product consistently' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Mike Venter LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/phmikeventer?originalSubdomain=za ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 110Attracting Mining's Next Generation - with Michael Moore
In this episode we chat to Michael Moore, MD of Golden State Mining who are an ASX listed exploration company based in Perth, Australia who have acquired a number of gold and base metals assets around Western Australia and looking to develop these in the near future. Michael is a mine engineer by background with extensive experience in Western Australia, and is also the director of the Camborne School of Mines in the UK, so we discuss what is happening with some of the universities around the world suspending some of their mining courses and what impact that will have in the industry in the future. We also talk about what the industry needs to do to attract more young people into mining and what are the key drives to achieving this. KEY TAKEAWAYS For previous generations, mining was seen as an exotic industry to be in due to its opportunities for travel and education around the world. This image seems to have waned somewhat, but we must revitalise it if we hope to attract the next generation. Mining takes place out of sight and out of mind for many. It is a distant industry that is not part of the common culture unless something goes wrong. We must do more to encourage visibility. New graduates should not concentrate so much on securing the first rung of the ladder in terms of career progression, It's far better to take the first job that pays and get started! Your first job in no way sets your career path. To improve credibility, we must ensure that operations are adhering to first-world rule and regulations in order to surpass expectations. BEST MOMENTS 'I realised what an important part of the economy it was, and how many opportunities there were' 'There's an inherent amount of ignorance in society about what we do' 'If you don't make the grade, these groups will not invest in you' 'Sometimes you're dealing with the president of country one day, and drillers the next day!' He also discusses mining in Ghana and what we can learn from his experiences. He has also recently released a new book titled “Navigating Career Challenges in the International Mining Industry; the Journey of a Mining Engineer”. KEY TAKEAWAYS Opportunities are always out there. We must be bold enough to chase them, even if it takes us far from home. Henry's journey has taken him around the world as is still ongoing. When accepting any kind of role, we must do our homework and look at what we are taking on. We must ensure that we are qualified both academically and practically. Cultures vary from country to country. Make sure you understand the cultures into which you are entering. This is crucial in forming successful business relationships. The blending of mining and technology has become the next great shift in the industry. More and more nowadays, science, technology and data are being used to refine and execute production with incredible results. Ep 108Managing Balkan Mining - with Dominic Roberts
In this episode we chat to Dominic Roberts, Head Of Corporate Affairs at Adriatic Metals, a precious and base metals explorer and developer that owns the world-class Vares silver project in Bosnia & Herzegovina, as well as the Raska zinc deposit in Serbia. Dominic has a military background and we talk about mining within the Balkans and how mining is changing the region for the better, bringing with it a bright future ahead. He has been in the region for a few decades, and so understands the area well, explaining how to prosper and get mining projects off the ground. KEY TAKEAWAYS Vares is a world-class base and precious metal project, made more effective and efficient by the experience brought to play by its collection of experts, of which Dominic is proud to be counted. The principle opportunity in the Balkans is the geological opportunity. The Balkans is incredibly well-endowed with mineral resources. There are countless opportunities to be had beneath already-used projects. Adriatic Metals have seen huge gains by going even deeper and discovering more reservoirs of minerals. Regulations in the Balkans tend to be diverse and sometimes opposing depending on where in the area you are. This makes permitting difficult, but not impossible It's worth persevering as the rewards can be great. BEST MOMENTS 'It's so much more clearer how companies can progress from exploration to exploitation' 'That's when our profile began to rise at that stage' 'This is region with much room for knowledge and education' 'From the very start it's guided every decision to take the communities along on that journey' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Dominic Roberts LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-roberts-6004b314?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 106Taking Mining Public - with Mark Brennan
Today’s guest is Mark Brennan, CEO and Co-Chairman of Cerrado Gold, a privately-owned Toronto-based growing precious metals mining and exploration company, building a portfolio of assets in South America, including Argentina and Brazil. The company is going public next week and Mark gives us an overview of mining in Brazil and Argentina, explaining more about Cerrado Gold’s recent acquisition and the future of the company going into this next decade. KEY TAKEAWAYS Formulating the right team, and allowing each member to use their specific skills, has allowed Cerrado to laser-focus their efforts in South and Latin America, turning the operation into a highly specialised and talented concern. Investment is as important as reinvestment. Cerrado have managed to strengthen their many operations through carefully reinvesting profits from one site to the next, allowing expansion in Brazil. When you operate in Brazil, you must have the support of the local community. Perhaps more than any other area, without community support, mining becomes an impossibility. The challenges of Argentina have mainly been COVID-related. Working hard and persevering where others may have failed, plus the specialist expertise of the team, have meant that even through these barriers, Cerrado have maintained success. BEST MOMENTS 'We all try to find the best possible asset we can find' 'We have a producer that generates cash and drives exploration' 'We all have a great deal of experience in Latin America and South America' 'We started with a dream in 2017. We're now raising capital to go public in December' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Cerrado Gold - https://www.cerradogold.com/copy-of-management Mark Brennan LInkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-brennan-356a59157/?originalSubdomain=ca ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 105Manifesting Success - with Dominic Duffy
In this episode we chat to Dominic Duffy, President and CEO at Mandalay Resources Corporation, a Canadian-based natural resource Corporation with producing assets in Australia and Sweden, with care and maintenance, and development projects in Chile and Canada. Dominic discusses the Victorian Gold fields in Australia and what the future holds in this area, rich in gold. He also talks about how junior producers like Mandalay are manifesting success in deeper underground mining KEY TAKEAWAYS The main differences between mining in Canada and Australia are regulations first and foremost, but also a dramatic discrepancy in values. However, this is definitely changing. To date, Victoria has mined 2,400 tons of gold (77 million ounces), which means that the area is responsible for 2% of all the gold ever mined on Earth. Governments will inevitably make the processes a lot faster and more streamlined for companies to pick up parcels. This will mean a more streamlined and efficient in-flow of investors and investment. The structural nature of the main deposits found, require a combination of the right geology and the right type of structure. Discoveries will come, but it will be a slow process. BEST MOMENTS 'Western companies are held to a higher standard' 'They've taken a very holistic look at the state' 'You will see investors far more willing to put in money to these exploration plays' 'You have to find where you have these bonanza grades' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Mandalay Resources - https://www.mandalayresources.com Dominic Duffy LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominic-duffy-11510a54/?trk=pub-pbmap&originalSubdomain=ca ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 104The Bright Future Of Mining In Ecuador - with Merlin Marr Johnson
In today’s episode we chat to Merlin Marr Johnson, Executive Vice President at Salazar Resources Ltd, an Ecuadorian Project Generator with a proven track record of discovery, and who have a well-funded high-grade copper and gold assets in Ecuador. Merlin’s belief is that old primary industry principles of economic theory, which says that wealth can only be created with "Land, Work, Ideas and Capital", is still very relevant in today’s modern world, so we are going to cover this and talk about the Salazar project in Ecuador. We talk about mining in Ecuador as a jurisdiction, and from a geologist viewpoint, Merlin talks about the geology of the country. We cover the challenges of mining in the country, how Salazar Resources has slowly won the trust of the local communities through initiatives they have implemented, and how mining has a bright future within Ecuador. KEY TAKEAWAYS Graduates seeking opportunities in the mining and geology sector must clearly define their differences from other candidates. Setting ourselves apart is the key to landing the career of our dreams. Good basic geological skills are the keystone of a mining career, and interfacing that with the newer techniques, such as handling data in three dimensions. One of the most underappreciated and overlooked skills in mining is the attainment of good quality, real-time imagery from the field. Go beyond the cellphone and transmit quality data to build a valuable portfolio and you will add instant value. Mining has been the most financially robust element of Ecuador's economical infrastructure. Despite attempts to shut mining down, due to aspirations of being more ecologically aware, the country realised that it is the backbone of their financial frame, and now opportunities are abundant.. BEST MOMENTS 'There's not much poetry in concrete' 'What it really ticks are all those developmental goals' 'Ecuador is so exciting from a geological perspective' 'Ecuador is one of the few places in the world where you can still walk up and find deposits' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Salazar Resources - https://www.salazarresources.com/about-us/management-and-technical-team/merlin-marr-johnson/ Merlin Marr-Johnson LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/merlin-marr-johnson-816604b9/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 103Analysing The Decarbonization Challenge Report - with Andrew Swart
In this episode we chat to Andrew Swart, Global Mining and Metals Leader at Deloitte. A returning guest, Andrew is going to talk about a recently-released report focussing upon the 2030 Decarbonization Challenge - The path to the future of energy. We discuss the top drivers of decarbonization and what this mean to companies in the Energy & Resources sectors, as well as how mining companies are approaching decarbonization, what is and what is not within their control, and how this affects their value chains. KEY TAKEAWAYS The issue of decarbonization is a complex one, and also one with a degree of uncertainty. The report seeks to explore the implications and opportunities for different companies within the energy sector. If we can figure out our carbon footprint, it drives real savings on a company’s bottom line. Depending on the portfolio we have, companies can also capitalise upon the broader societal trend. Many mining companies have to deal with multinational entities with operations in a variety of countries. Right now there is no uniform view in terms of carbon taxes and measures, meaning that there is a patchwork of varying legislation. The first step is to recognise the value chain. Companies must understand the nature of partnerships, where the products are being utilised, and how, and create a greater sense of visibility in the market. .BEST MOMENTS ’This makes for a great read, but is also designed to help companies think about the landscape strategically’ ‘Many minerals hold the keys to a lower carbon future’ ‘It’s a complex issue. It’s a real mixed bag. Over the next year we’re going to see more clarity’ ‘It’s about really understanding your value chain' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Decarbonization Challenge Report Deloitte Canada - https://www2.deloitte.com/ca/en/profiles/andrew-swart.html Andrew Swart LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewfswart/?originalSubdomain=ca ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 102Transformative Mining Technology - with Mike Battersby
In this episode we chat to Mike Battersby, Chairman & Managing Director of Maelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS), a privately owned limited company and is establishing itself as a world leader in the development and implementation of innovative cost effective technologies and processes in the field of mineral, chemical and waste processing. Maelgwyn has had many patents granted and has won a number of national innovation awards for its technology which has achieved significant environmental benefits in terms of reduced energy and waste for operations. We talk about the flotation technologies and products they manufacture and how they dramatically improve mining companies’ recoveries in gold and other precious and base metals and mineral commodities and why companies would benefit from using their technology. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you’re leeching gold with cyanide, which is how most of the gold around the world is produced, you need oxygen for the reaction to take place. Many operations don’t have enough oxygen in their circuit in order to produce a fast reaction. The specially developed Aachen reactor has far less energy consumption, small footprint in terms of capital cost, and yet gives a far higher performance. People financing a new project are not necessarily interested because of the new technologies involved. They want results at the lowest cost possible. There has been a resistance to emerging and new technologies in mining, purely because it moves so quickly, and can largely be unproven. But slowly attitudes are changing. Companies are more receptive to experimentation and progress. .BEST MOMENTS ‘We did hit the ground running!’ ‘It was going to be the Aachen reactor or the Aardvark reactor!’ ‘With Maelgwyn we took it to another stage of pneumatic flotation’ ’There is a lot of interest between the mining companies, to look at sustainability' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Maelgwyn - https://www.maelgwyn.com Michael Battersby Twitter - https://twitter.com/maelgwynms?lang=en-gb Michael Battersby LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-battersby-283a3a3/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry.
