Ep 73Marcus Brewster

In today episode we chat to Marcus Brewster, an experienced and respected GM who has worked across the world in many countries in South America and Africa, and for the likes of Nordgold, Goldfields and Endeavour Mining. A mining Professional with 23 years’ of open pit and underground experience, Marcus has demonstrated expertise in successfully turning around mine projects, and managing challenging mining operations. Therefore, his opinion on all things successful around mining operations are invaluable. We chat about are the main attributes needed to be a successful general manager, what makes a successful mining operation, and the main attributes needed for any mine to be successful. Marcus continues to explain the major challenges and biggest impacts facing mining operations moving forward, how important the relationship is between senior management in the corporate office, and the key ingredients to a successful relationship. Hope you enjoy! KEY TAKEAWAYS Generational knowledge is the future of mining. We as professionals need to engage with the new wave of graduates who will one day take that knowledge and apply it to the world in new and unique ways. Technical knowledge and an astute mind are the keys to becoming a great general manager. By broadening our knowledge base, we increase our value. Productivity improvement opportunities, hands-on time with the work, and constant communication are the core skills needed to engender trust and create life in any project. Solid strategies and mine-plans are the foundations upon which all projects should be built. But further than that, these strategies need to align with corporate values. Effective succession planning is paying huge dividends now, especially with the Coronavirus situation. Mining projects are among the most stable investments in the world. BEST MOMENTS ‘Leading by example is critical’ ‘You need to get out there. It’s all about visible leadership’ ’The most successful relationships I’ve seen are between teams that respect each other’ ’The word “general” is no exaggeration!' Ep 72Lucy Crane Interview

In this episode Rob interviews Lucy Crane, senior geologist at Cornish Lithium in the UK, who are currently developing a lithium mine in Cornwall. Lucy has recently given a TEDx talk on "Mining Our Way to a Low Carbon Future”. Along with discussing this fascinating topic, Lucy and Rob also talk about how the image of mining could be improved, and how Women In Mining UK are helping the industry to achieve that. KEY TAKEAWAYS People outside of the mining industry don’t seem to realise how important it is for the continued extraction of primary materials. These are essential components in all parts of modern society. An image-change for the industry requires a reframing of elements such as the way mining is reported in the media, misinformation, and simply misunderstanding the goals and aims of mining. Crowdfunding is an innovative and popular new way of involving communities in mining exploration. By part-funding projects, they become invested both financially and emotionally. Mining is a delicate balancing act between three factors. We need to provide automation when possible in order to reduce risk. We also need to ensure that local communities are employed, and that costs are carefully observed. “Dirty” is a dirty word in mining. The perception of mining suffers from a huge disconnect between outdated views of how it works, and the modern, technologically-based reality. Women In Mining UK are working to attract the next generation of women in the industry by providing internships, scholarships and funding to find mining's stars of tomorrow. BEST MOMENTS ’The mining industry needs to frame itself as the solution against climate change, instead of the problem' ‘We have a real opportunity to boost Cornwall’s economy, pretty significantly!’ ‘People have a very un-validated view of what mining is’ ‘We need diverse teams, as it provides diverse approaches to problems’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Lucy Crane LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lucy-crane-747a6854/?originalSubdomain=uk Cornish Lithium - https://www.cornishlithium.com Women In Mining UK - https://www.womeninmining.org.uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 71Eugene Antonov

Rob’s guest this week is Eugene Antonov, the COO of Trans-Siberian Gold Management. With over twenty years’ experience, consisting of operations and finance on a global perspective, Eugene has helped Trans-Siberian to grow into one of the most valuable and impressive gold concerns in the world. Eugene joins Rob this week to discuss the outlook for mining in Russia, the developments in the Russian mining space in general, and the surprising effect that the Coronavirus has had upon Trans-Siberian’s gold operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eugene has over twenty years’ experience in mining, with a special focus on managerial positions with a responsibility for mine-site operations and finance. With a mining and finance background to draw upon, Eugene feels well placed in the industry, as the two paths compliment each other in terms of discipline. Since 2011, Trans-Siberian has produced over 300,000 ounces of refined gold from its main operation in Eastern Russia. Kamchatka is remote, but this means that geographically speaking, it is relatively unexplored. This has led to a wealth of opportunities in the region. On average it takes about three months to deliver the main mining materials from around the world, to the Kamchatka mine. This means effective planning must be employed at all times. Russia is one of the largest producers of gold in the world. It is also one of the largest producers of certain diamond types, and has one of the finest mining labour forces, globally speaking. Coronavirus has affected the global markets significantly. Surprisingly, this has led to savings in the gold industry, who are enjoying an approximate 10% reduction in costs. Trans-Siberian is now better poised for growth both organically and through selective creative acquisitions. .BEST MOMENTS ‘We want profitable ounces’ ‘Growth is part of our strategy’ ‘It’s known for its typical high-grade deposits’ ‘Mining is in the DNA of this country’ ‘We don’t want to acquire ounces for the sake of ounces’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Eugene Antonov LinkedIn - https://ru.linkedin.com/in/eugene-antonov-1504b38 Trans-Siberian Gold - http://www.trans-siberiangold.com [email protected] ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 70Coronavirus & the Mining Industry; You NEED to Listen (With David Paterson)

In the episode we chat to David Paterson, an experienced management consultant who help clients to develop corporate strategies with particular expertise in problems involving complex reputation issues. With what is happening in the world with the coronavirus/Covid19, I thought it would be good to have David on the podcast after he reached out to me and wanted to talk about “the importance of communications in a crisis”. We talk about What challenges do you see the coronavirus having on mining companies and what measures should they be putting in place during these times. Also how do you deal with the confusion that arises from shifting information and uncertainty around the facts being put out there and identify three important points about communicating during a crisis. We conclude by talking about what will mining companies learn or how will they adapt to this new way of working once this crisis has settled down. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a consultant for companies in the mining industries, David helps in educating them about the social and political risks circling around mining. He can attest that these kinds of risks are as likely as technical risks, which are more known to cause the closing of companies. Communication is important more than ever in the mining industry. As much as possible, we want to continue providing our service while maintaining the quality all throughout, impressing the stakeholders, and getting the workforce engaged. But, during this hard time—amid the Covid-19 outbreak—it is our utmost priority to put the health and wellbeing of our suppliers, employees, and investors at the very top. Extend your help outside the company, to the vulnerable, to the community. Since we’re in the middle of a crisis, and anything can change any day, it’s best that you already have a core group who are incessant on monitoring updates, resourceful when looking for solutions and flexible for operations. 3 Important Points About Communication Amid a Crisis: Protect your company’s reputation as it is one of the most important assets. Get excellent information to arrive at excellent decisions. Don’t forget about the stakeholders—the suppliers, the employees, and the customers. How do we keep our internal communications strong? Involve each person in the crisis plan. As much as possible, you, as a leader, must be the one to convey news to everyone else so they understand they’re being taken care of. Assure them that everything will go back to normal, and everything is handled even after the crisis. There are many ways in how mining companies can extend help to the community. You can make use of the facilities, equipment, and vehicles. Authorities might need these rescue and relief operations for the affected communities. BEST MOMENTS “One of the key premises I got was, if you look at mining businesses that have shut down prematurely, it’s roughly half and half between technical risks and social & political risks.” “It’s important that we all recognise that people are anxious everywhere and they’re looking for assurance.” “It’s critical that you keep your workforce and other stakeholders focused and engaged… their optimism and moral as high as possible.” “While there are a lot of electronic communication tools available, there is nothing really quite as effective as getting a face-to-face briefing with their leader.” “There’s going to be a lot of rethinking that will go on once we get through this.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes W Resources - https://wresources.com/about-us/the-team/ Michael Masterman Twitter - https://twitter.com/mgmasterman?lang=en Michael Masterman LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-masterman-0863592b/ ABOUT THE GUEST David Paterson is a well-known Management Consultant who helps his clients develop corporate strategies with particular expertise in problems involving complex reputation issues. Ep 69Building A World Class Operation - with Michael Masterman

In this episode we interview Michael Masterman, the Executive Chairman of W Resources, a European mining company focussed on building a world-class tungsten operation. W have three tungsten operations across Spain and Portugal, and are also developing a gold/copper operation in the region. Michael is the co-founder of W Resources Plc, and has an exceptional track record in establishing and financing new resources companies. We talk about W Resources, focussing on their two main assets: La Parrilla in Spain (tungsten and tin) and Régua in Portugal (tungsten), and talk at length about how they are progressing with these operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS W Resources is based in Spain and Portugal and focusses primarily on tungsten and tin, although it does also consist of a substantial gold discovery in central Portugal. For La Parrilla, the key is to get to the design capacity of 2,500 tons of tungsten per annum (200 tons of tungsten concentrate per month). The mine itself has a low cost because it has a low strip-ratio. This is at about 1.1:1 in terms of waste. This is hugely attractive to potential investors. There’s a large difference in density between the waste materials and the higher density tungsten and tin. This means that W can use gravity separation to separate the two very efficiently. Planes, trucks and aerospace, account for 30% of all tungsten use. As the hardest metal in the world, it makes for reliable and dependable materials for transport. The key drivers for price and demand in the tungsten market are the growing construction projects around the world, as it is a vital component in tool manufacture. It is also scarce, so supply is limited. .BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s a long-life, low-cost, large-scale project’ ’Spanish mining costs are globally very competitive’ ’Tungsten is the world’s hardest metal’ ‘We’ve got a mine that’s up and running and expanding very rapidly!’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes W Resources - https://wresources.com/about-us/the-team/ Michael Masterman Twitter - https://twitter.com/mgmasterman?lang=en Michael Masterman LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-masterman-0863592b/?originalSubdomain=au ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 68The Financial Landscape For Junior Miners – with Richard Lloyd

In today’s episode we chat to Richard Lloyd, CEO of Minexia which operates the mining funding platform NR Private Market. Rich is a 25-year mining industry veteran having graduated from the Royal School of Mines in the early 90's, and having worked in gold exploration and mining and then mining investment banking (I guess the rocks are in his DNA…) Rich also sits on a number of mining boards as a non-executive director. After meeting Richard at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town recently, I wanted to get him on the podcast to talk about the financing landscape for junior miners as he has a strong background in this space. We talk about the challenges facing mining juniors in today’s environment and how investors can differentiate between deals, especially during the early stages. We also touch on WRT-to-platform financing and how it can help juniors to raise much needed early stage finance. KEY TAKEAWAYS Post-graduates, and those just starting out in the industry, need to be prepared to put themselves out there, and most importantly travel, in order to find opportunities. Anti-laundering measures are paramount to any activity in mine investment. Heavy regulations see to it that investment channels cannot be used for nefarious purposes. In the main, the mining industry has always been a little slower on the uptake when it comes to technological innovations, such as crowdfunding. Copper is a commodity that has a useful purpose on the investment side, for the reason that by studying its share prices, you can almost use it as an indicator, or as Richard calls it, a “fair-weather commodity” to show where the market is heading. Minexia analyse potential deals using a “Four C’s” system, involving: Country - What are the geo-political risks of the proposed area? Sometimes the high-risk, post-conflict areas can be lucrative. Commodity - Some materials are far easy to assess than others. Corporate - What does the management structure look like? Is it stable? Are they listed or private? Where are they based? Concession - What does the layout of the project itself look like? There are many unscrupulous funding channels out there. The only way to really combat this situation is to raise awareness. Richard credits methods such as Dig Deep as a good way of raising this awareness. Minexia help junior miners by vetting the deals carefully. Through their broad range of knowledge, and with their team of experts, they can provide swift, accurate feedback. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Gold mines aren’t necessarily found along the M4 corridor nowadays’ ’There are only so many ways you can dig a hole in the ground’ ‘Investing in early-stage mining projects is a little more technical’ ’They call it Dr Copper for a reason’ ‘You don’t know exactly what they’re reading, or what they’re looking at' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Minexia - https://www.minexia.com/about Richard Lloyd LInkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rich-lloyd-mining-finance/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 67Water Management and Tailings Dam Management – with Dr Kym Morton

In this episode we talk to Dr Kym Morton, MD of KLM Consulting Services, who specialises in mine de-watering design, water control and accurate tailings pore-pressure monitoring, plus many other areas around water management. With 40 years-experience, Kym is an expert in this subject and we talk about the learning of mine de-watering design and the key ingredients to a successful mine water management and risk reduction. We continue by explaining why the best solutions are both top-down and bottom-up around water control, and what challenges the industry faces around their water management plans and tailings dam management, as well as what they need to do to improve and monitor more closely these issues. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having been on both sides of mining operations, Kym recognises the importance of not just having a practical knowledge, but also a method of communicating your ideas to the money men. You need to know three things in order to effectively plan de-watering: Where’s the water coming from? How is it travelling to you? What will you store it in? You need an effective monitoring network in order to see where the water is coming from and where it will be stored. Technology is a huge asset in this. Kym has found that by showing the mistakes made by companies in the past, she can provide a humorous approach to making sure that companies don’t repeat them. The three mantras for mine de-watering control are: Cut off recharge Exploit permeability Start early Much monitoring happens that isn’t relevant to the mining problem. Too much “box-ticking” takes place. The reality is that the monitoring is being done in the wrong places. There will be a lot more activity in the area of tailings dams in the future, mainly because insurers are drawing away from high-risk ventures. .BEST MOMENTS ’It’s necessary to learn how to speak to board members in financial terms’ ‘I hit a glass ceiling in ’89’ ‘What I’ve learned in the last 40 years is how not to do things’ ’They want more bang for their buck’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Dr Kym Morton LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/kym-l-morton-phd-mba-c-geol-fgs-fsaimm-dic-a6172426/?originalSubdomain=za ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 66The Green Economy – with Paul Gill

In this episode we chat to Paul Gill, CEO & Director at Lomiko Metals who are focused on the exploration and development of minerals for the new green economy, such as lithium and graphite, and who have a development in Canada. We find out more about the new green economy and why its important for sustainability and for the future of mining. We talk about the relationship between major trends around a greener economy (ie, graphite and lithium) in the mining industry compared to the traditional mining industry and why Lomiko has focused on graphite, and the future demand of this commodity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul has always been forward-thinking, and so the renewables market has always been his main focus. Renewables are the future. A greater public awareness had led to a surge in interest in the renewables market, which has caused a subsequent spike in interest from investors. It’s vital to have at least a ten-year supply of materials in your inventory so as to supply future demand. Copper is a huge driver in the renewables market. Paul acknowledges this and by using the same rationale, views graphite as a driving force in fifteen year’s time. Lithium and graphite are heavily used in fields such as pharmaceutical, manufacturing, lubricants, composites, and in materials such as carbon fibre. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Graphite is the “dark horse” of the renewables market’ ‘When there’s a pinch in supply, all of a sudden there’s a huge increase in the price of lithium’ ’There is no large corporation involved in the production of graphite right now’ ‘We try to put money into the ground instead of into fancy offices’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Paul Gill LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/a-paul-gill-2b65b114/?originalSubdomain=ca Lomiko - https://www.lomiko.com ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 65How To Close A Mine Successfully – with Dr Geraldine McGuire

Today's episode is spent in the company of Dr Geraldine McGuire, who for over twenty years has worked on complex projects balancing economic, environmental and social aspects to achieve sustainable solutions. As managing director of Sustainable Solutions Global Pty Ltd, her main specialisation is mine closure, and the topic of discussion today is around repurposing mines vs traditional mine closures. We discuss the difference between a traditional mine closure and repurposing a mine and how this effects the local communities and what challenges are mining companies facing in mine closure and what could they do better. We also look at ideas and examples of companies repurposing mines, and the benefits this provides to local communities. KEY TAKEAWAYS The laws in Indonesia and Australia are surprisingly similar as they have all emanated from the World Bank. The only real difference is the enforcement of the laws. The main issue in re-purposing mines comes in the vested interests of companies who perhaps do not care so much about the environmental issues that follow. Mine closures are generally about reverting the land back to its original state, and also to restoring the people back to their original way of life. The difference between mine-closure and repurposing is that re-purposing is trying to think of a different use for the mine, instead of simply putting the land back to the way it was. Locals need to be involved in either closing or repurposing, so as to ensure that they will benefit to the fullest extent in the wake of a mining operation moving on. Reintroduction of natural species, along with restorative aspects, are the current trends in the mine-closure market. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Mining is a non-renewable resource’ ’The reason that we’re doing it is in safety and wellbeing’ ‘I call it “putting the egg back together”' ’There are ongoing jobs and ongoing opportunities’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Dr Geraldine McGuire LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/geraldine-mcguire-5b26121b/?originalSubdomain=au Sustainable Solutions - https://sustainablesolutionsglobal.com ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 64Managing Crisis and Emergency – with Liz Puddy

In today episode we interview Liz Puddy, an experienced crisis and emergency management consultant who has worked with many mining companies over the years in helping them with the development of their crisis & emergency management plans and procedures. It's a subject that’s not necessarily spoken about daily but needs to be in place should the unexpected arise, in order to minimise any damage and injury. We discuss what good crisis and emergency management looks like, and how mining companies can benefit from having good crisis and emergency management systems in place; the challenges mining companies face around crisis and emergency management, and whether you should have a proactive or reactive approach to this subject. KEY TAKEAWAYS Crisis and emergency management is about having the appropriate framework and response process in place should the unforeseen occur. Good crisis and emergency management is never a “one size fits all” process. Each contingency plan must be uniquely tailored to the individual needs of the business. When planning for the needs of smaller and larger businesses, the process is generally the same. The resources are generally different, and so is the scale. Risk profile is also greatly increased exponentially depending on the size of the operation. The largest part of Liz’s job is to simplify the sometimes bloated approach to crisis and emergency that companies have developed over the years, including stripping out outdated methodologies and expired safety practices. Good planning allows for a company and its higher management to feel safe in the knowledge that a standardised approach to any crisis can take place, company-wide, and that it will be a consistent, tested response. Crisis management is a cost to any company, and isn’t a revenue generator. But the costs of effective planning can offset huge expense down the road in the event of an emergency. There is a huge benefit to having it. .BEST MOMENTS ‘You’ve got to have that controlled and coordinated response’ ‘It doesn’t matter what pops up, they’re going to have the means to handle it’ ’Never burn a bridge’ ‘Are we in a good position to respond to that if we need to? ‘You see a lot of barriers breaking down’ ‘It’s like that insurance policy we all begrudge paying for. Ep 63Striking Success – with Christian Easterday of Hot Chili

In this podcast, we chat to Christian Easterday, Managing Director of Hot Chili Ltd, an ASX-listed Australian mineral exploration company, well-advanced in developing its portfolio of copper projects on the coastal range in Region III, Chile. With impressive recent results, we chat about the company's Cortadera project and the possibility of turning it into a Tier 1 asset due to the discoveries that have been made. We talk about the widely publicised lack of new large-scale copper developments in the world, and how Hot Chili’s projects stack up against other developments and recent major discoveries. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hot Chili was listed on the ASX back in 2010, and saw great success through the results gained by their flagship project near Santiago. Since developing the Cortadera project, Hot Chili have seen huge exponential growth on site. The scale of the project, and the rewards found so far, have amazed the company, and exceeded expectations. Hot Chili are heading a very narrow field of companies who have made significant discoveries over recent years; discoveries which have led to a firm foothold in the industry, and which have led to heightened prosperity. Copper is a very deep market. Projects that deal in copper are becoming more rare, are more difficult to find. The industry has responded by investing more into copper identification, and to seek that next, elusive Tier 1 copper find… Copper is the “green metal” of the future. It is the centre of electrification, and in turn, the centre of the renewables industry. It is a resource that will be talked about more and more in the coming years. .BEST MOMENTS ‘You show your resilience when you go through nuclear winters' ‘We ended the years as one of the highest-performing ASX companies’ ‘What we have at the moment is certainly a lot bigger than we thought’ ’That external environment on copper price becomes less important’ ‘Copper is on everyone’s shopping list’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Are you going to the upcoming Indaba Mining Conference 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa from the 3rd – 6th February, 2020? Ep 62Sustainability In Mining – with Adrian Bell

In this episode we chat to Adrian Bell who has 32 years domestic and international mining experience in senior and executive roles within human resources, risk management, sustainability (safety, environment, community), communications and external affairs. For the past 13 years, Adrian was at an executive level reporting to the Managing Director with a mid-tier and successful ASX100 mining Company, PanAust Limited that was recently taken over by a Chinese State Owned Enterprise (SOE). Currently, Adrian is consulting full-time to Aurelia Metals on HR, Risk and Sustainability and is Chairman of OnContractor which is a fully integrated IT Platform that uses AI Recruitment and matching as well as contractor management and payroll function. We talk about HR issues around starting a new project in a developing country versus an existing operation in Australia, and the common themes about restructuring an operation and managing change. We continue with the theme of sustainability and why this is important for mining companies, and details on the best way to close a mine in a developing country. KEY TAKEAWAYS Adrian’s wealth of experience in mining has seen him take everything from HR roles to corporate positions, culminating in him becoming one of the most sought after consultant names in the industry. The unions commanded more respect and loyalty from mining professionals, than the companies commanded, during the 80s. This led to a precarious balance of power that was resolved when companies began to make changes in the methods of their operations. The six things that employees want and deserve, and which will subsequently ensure loyalty, are: Job security Fair pay Safety Reasonable expectations Development Prospects for career advancement Culture is a very nebulous thing. It’s intangible, but it is there. Everyone gets a sense of a company’s culture when they join. The secret to true culture integrations, is to take the keywords and make them live and breathe in your business. Recognising good performance, and encouraging diversity and development, are all keystones of employee respect, and by doing so, creating respect for the community and environment. There’s no better way of showing respect and integrity than through transparent recording. Sustainability reports, followed by follow-ups, security, human rights, governance documents and diligence are important starting points. You need to engage with the workforce. When restructuring or reviewing an operation, as much as possible should be developed in house by the existing workforce. By going outside, you will engender distrust. Adrian’s vast experience came from never saying no to opportunities for development. We must never close ourselves off from the chance to be better. Executives these days can see the multitude of benefits that come through diversifying their workforce. Adrian has been at the forefront of gender equality in the industry. Operating in different countries, and adhering to different environments and governance, caused mining to realise that each territory requires a risk framework that differs from country to country. Case studies have proved that respect and care are vital components of effective mine closures, and have left successful transitional legacies in countries and areas in which mines are longer operating. Positive legacies must always be left behind. .BEST MOMENTS ‘We need to show respect for the community and for the environment’ ’They’re trying to reach consensus on improving conditions in the workplace’ ‘Employees felt loyalty to the unions instead of the company’ ‘A lot of people get turned off by the jargon’ ‘You can’t rely on leadership alone’ ’Never say no to anything’ ‘Very early on we developed a risk framework' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Are you going to the upcoming Indaba Mining Conference 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa from the 3rd – 6th February, 2020? Ep 61A Focus On Tailings – with Brian Ulrich

In today’s episode we interview Bryan Ulrich, the Vice President of the Geotechnical Division at Stantec, a company providing a wide array of services (engineering, design, project management etc) that begin at the intersection of community, creativity, and client relationships across a range of sectors including mining. Bryan specialises in tailing, and in this podcast we talk about tailings and why it has become big news in recent times, as well as the lessons that can be learned. We also discuss how tailings management has changed over the years, and talk about some of the challenges faced by companies in tailing management. Are you going to the upcoming Indaba Mining Conference 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa from the 3rd – 6th February? The event is one of the world’s biggest mining events where professionals in the mining industry where you can meet like minded people and peers to connect with. So follow this link and purchase your ticket:https://www.miningindaba.com/Page/register KEY TAKEAWAYS Mine Tailings occur when the ore is crushed and pulverised; the metals of interest are extracted, and the leftover pulverised material is called Tailings. Tailings are transported as a wet slurry to a facility and are almost wet. Tailings are of great interest to anyone with a geotechnical background as it involves many of the pursuits that make up the geotechnical course of study. A major issue in the Tailings sector is that it is essentially a waste product, and people are reluctant to invest in a waste product. Therefore, technologically, it is slow to grow, and does not benefit from investment. As yet, there are not clear factors linking Tailings projects that collapse, but Brian is confident that there must be a link, and that it must be data driven. Improvement in Tailings should be based around risk and risk-analysis. Innovation, also, will drive Tailings forward, especially using polymers for binding. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I had a rock collection like lots of little kids do’ ‘You can more or less live the dream as a geotechnical engineer if you love Tailings’ ‘Keep building the buttress’ ’It’s the innovators who will solve the problems of tomorrow' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Please book your ticket to the upcoming Indaba Mining Conference 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa from the 3rd – 6th February 2020. Ep 60Marketing And Mining – with Adam O’Leary of Encite International

In this episode, we talk to Adam O’Leary who is President and Owner of Encite International, a full-service, boutique marketing and advertising agency based in Denver, Colorado, who are committed to building great brands and strategic marketing plans and often work with Mining companies to promote their brand, products and services. This is an informative, invaluable episode for all mining professionals who wish to understand more about how branding and marketing in the mining works and how important it is in building a mining company. We talk about how mining companies can improve their marketing and branding, and how mining can improve its image overall. We also discuss how video is used in marketing and how you can effectively market big ticket items. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many industrial companies, including mining companies, believe that marketing is not as essential part of their plan. Since their product is often not generally available to the public in the traditional way, mining companies see marketing as unnecessary. Adam has learned over time that this viewpoint is incorrect. Mining companies also need to communicate with their audience or customer base, and they need measurable results. Traditional sales techniques do work in mining, such as phone calls, sales pitches and meetings etc. But there are more efficient methods of reaching a wider audience in a swifter way. When marketing big-ticket items that sometimes run into the millions of dollars, it’s important to remember that there is no point-of-sale. There is no impulse-buy factor to consider. Brand awareness and consistency are the factors that instead drive sales to people who are already in the market for such goods. Mining needs to work hard on improving its environmental image. Putting together an efficient programme that displays prominently its ability to embrace recycling and geographical regulations, is the keystone to improving its perception. Video production is something that Encite have been working in more when it comes to mining. The approach so far has been to make the industry seem more personal and personable. It’s all about humanising the sector. .BEST MOMENTS ’Since they’re not selling traditional products, they tend to look at marketing as an unnecessary tool’ ‘Relationships in the mining industry are very important’ ‘It all comes back to those brand attributes you’re trying to communicate’ ‘Video is something that’s very much an opportunity for the mining industry' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Encite International - https://www.enciteinternational.com Adam O’ Leary LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamoleary/ [email protected] ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 59The Intelligence of Technology – with Liv Carroll of Accenture

In this episode we interview Liv Carroll - Senior Principal at Accenture focusing on Accentures digital applied intelligence and transformation within the mining industry. Liv’s background is in geology and over time he has moved into Applied Intelligence to generate value for clients through definition, adoption & strengthening of innovation and sustainability strategy; advanced analytics & machine learning; and improved operating models. We talk about the key drivers of the mining industry today and how technology can address contemporary business needs. Liv discusses attributes of successful companies rather than those that flounder, while giving us an insightful account of where mining will be in 10 years. KEY TAKEAWAYS When Liv graduated, no mining concerns were taking people on due to falling prices. Liv took a lateral step and joined a UK based consulting firm, working with aggregate players. The UK government knew early that it was wise to invest in mineral products for the future. Institutional investors and now taking a very keen interest in how companies are affecting the environment and the social fabrics of mining projects. Data shows that in 2018, mining was still unable to achieve zero fatalities. This needs to change. Liv and the mining industry in general are doing their best to study and engender positive human behaviour in order to deliver new technologies to support it. It is important to contribute time and energy into making mining a better industry, and a healthy, nurturing place for the next generation of miners. Those who have gained experience have a collective responsibility to help others move up the ladder. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I’ve always been a fan of consulting’ ‘They will withdraw investment if they feel that it doesn’t come up to scratch’ ‘the technology is just the delivery method. The data is key’ ‘Where are we at? Do we need to change course?’ ‘It’s always good to have a plan, but know that you can adjust if you need to’ ‘You need to be involved in the organisation’ ‘It gives me such great pleasure to see others thriving’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Liv Carroll LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/livcarroll/?originalSubdomain=uk Accenture - https://www.accenture.com/gb-en/insight-resources-digital-transformation-future-mining Accenture Twitter - https://twitter.com/accenturemining?lang=en ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 58Rob Tyson Meets Rob Tyson?! of Peel Mining

In this first episode of 2020, we interview Rob Tyson (no I’m not interviewing myself!), Managing Director of Peel Mining Ltd, an Australian company focused on exploring and developing precious base metals resources in New South Wales, Australia. Peel Mining is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and is continuing to build shareholder value by recognising, enhancing and developing undervalued mineral resource assets and which has three base and precious metals projects in NSW. We chat about how Peel Mining is developing assets in Cober, NSW, the discoveries they have made, exploration in the Cobar Basin, and what makes the area special. Through their success, Rob and Peel have been awarded the AMEC Prospector Award. We discuss what makes them unique, their project criteria and what lies in the future for the company and in the Cobar region. We conclude by seeing how the exploration and geology sector is developing in Australia. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Cobar basin region is an area with a strong mining pedigree, which was attractive to Peel. The main formations in the Cobar region are pipe-like, and stretch all the way to the centre of the earth. The highest grade copper mine in Australia is local to the area and stretched down almost 2km below the surface. Companies are more keen to invest in their own exploration projects instead of funding junior miners to find them on their behalf. Batteries and electric vehicles are set to drive up the demand, and the price, of copper, of which there does not seem to be enough right now. Rob’s advice to aspiring geologists is to make sure their CV is up to date and looking attractive, and then get it in front of as many people as possible. People don’t mind being approached, and opportunities are there. .BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s the only job I know where you get paid to go camping’ ‘There’s a lot of low-grade opportunities in South America’ ‘The biggest issue is making sure you’ve got the right people’ ‘Hopefully the commodities market is firm over the next twelve to eighteen months. It’s fits and starts’ ‘Keep getting your CV out there!’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Rob Tyson - Peel Mining LinkedIn - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-9bb8638 Peel Mining - http://www.peelmining.com.au ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 57A Conversation with Ivan Bebek of Auryn Resources

In this episode, we chat to Ivan Bebek, Executive Chairman and Director at Auryn Resources, a technically-driven, well-financed junior exploration company focused on finding and advancing globally significant gold, silver and base metal deposits. The Company has a portfolio approach to asset acquisition and has seven projects, in Canada & Peru. Ivan is an entrepreneur in the mining/exploration sector with over 22 years’ experience with a strong ability to finance, monetize and advance exploration assets into the development stage. We chat about Ivan's successful trading career before starting an exploration company and bringing together an experience team with a proven track record to find some of the world’s biggest discoveries and development them into Tier 1 asset. With a market cap of around $180 million (CAD), up 45% year to date (Dec 2019), Ivan talks about the company’s future and why it could be an attractive stock for investors. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ivan credits his mentors with helping him to realise his own potential, the rules of the trade and the founding and significance of mining projects. Africa raise royalties from 3.5% to 5%, and release corporate taxes which made initial mines in Ghana unprofitable, and so Ivan and his team were forced to expand and improvise. Through experience, Ivan has learned to be aggressive, to work harder, to buy more and to shop harder for good assets in bad markets when they’re being ignored. Mines are becoming harder to find, supply is an issue on the copper side, plus there’s a rising demand for vehicle electrification, and these factors make Ivan and his projects hugely sought after, and in a marvellous position to assert their dominance. Auryn want to attract investors who want to be part of longer term opportunities, or as Ivan calls them, “longer term thinkers” Auryn has three major opportunities within its portfolio; a technical team well versed in gold, a strong scientific background, and an ability to self-finance. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I found a lot of interest in my own world in working on the other side of the business’ ‘Every successful person you meet has likely learned from other successful people’ ‘Go against the grain when things are going cheap’ ‘Our shareholders are one of our biggest weapons’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Ivan Bebek LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ivan-bebek-73038763/?originalSubdomain=ca Auryn Resources - https://www.aurynresources.com/corporate/directors/ivan-bebek/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 56The Will to Win Mentality – Interview with Stewart Dickson, CEO - Variscan Mines Limited

Today we speak to Stewart Dickson, CEO - Variscan Mines Limited, a natural resources company focused on the development of high-impact base-metal projects who currently have projects in Australia, Spain and Chile. Stewart’s journey into mining isn’t the norm as he started off in the military so I was curious to know and understand how he got into the mining industry and learn how someone with a non-technical mining background can develop a career in the mining industry. In this episode, we chat about what qualities are needed from people that are not from a mining background. We talk about the skills and experience Stewart has bought to the mining industry and his emphasis on teams, trust and cooperation which are so important in management today. We also cover risk and opportunity working in developing countries. KEY TAKEAWAYS An unconventional pathway My career in the military provided me with a great foundation for working in the mining industry. There are some common traits between the oil and gas mining industries and the military that allowed me to empathise with management teams. These traits include being able to face up to a challenge whether technical, physical, political, intellectual and a willingness and desire to go out and achieve an objective or corporate intent irrespective of the circumstances. It’s the will to win mentality and the ability and desire to see a project through from inception to completion. Being non-technical The nature of the industry, it’s multidisciplinary and complex, requires a comprehensive approach to situations, projects and opportunities. Non-technical people benefit from not thinking in a particular way or are rigid because of expertise in a particular area. You need to have the right people with the right skills in the right role The role of the senior leader is to bring people together effectively to win or lose together as a team. Good teams You use the enriched experiences of those around you and what binds it together is clarity of intent, the unifying purpose needs to come from the leadership. Without commitment from leadership, the team will struggle to operate. The key is clarity of intent everybody in the organisation knows what they are trying to achieve. They know that whatever actions they take they are directed towards achieving the plan or purpose. Leadership style There is no right way or right pathway you have to be comfortable of your own strengths and weaknesses There is no right way and if you try to be someone you are not it will not stand up in a stressful or complex situation We are in a hyper-connected world there will be times where you are looking at a physical situation with virtual aspects as well. Trust your team you’ve hired and nurtured them. If you apply this most of the time people pay you back hugely. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s looking at situations in a 360 way’ ‘You need to want to win with personal resilience and robustness along with the fortitude to deal with what comes in front of you’ ‘In mining it’s all about the prevent phase - your social licence and engagement’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Dig Deep Mining Podcast Variscan Mining website ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. In this episode, we chat to Martin Horgan, ex-director of Toro Gold, an African Gold explorer and developer recently bought out by Resolute Mining, who acquired their flagship asset Mako Gold Mine (Mako) located in Senegal. I was really interested in getting Martin on the podcast as he has achieved a lot with Toro Gold and he didn’t necessarily follow the normal path that most other junior mining explorers would normal follow. We talk about his background, working on site, in the consultancy space, and then into the banking sector before starting an exploration company. We also discuss Toro Gold; how they made a greenfield discovery and took it successfully into production and an exit, which isn't the normal path an exploration company take, and why they remained in private hands rather than in a public listed company KEY TAKEAWAYS Martin’s extensive experience has seen him travel the world and work in all sectors of the mining industry. During the late 2000’s, against the accepted wisdom, Martin decided to start a business, affirming that his contacts and opportunities would help him to establish a real player. He established Toro in 2009 as a result. Job opportunities when leaving university back in the nineties was significantly easier as companies were actively seeking future stars at the universities themselves. Many UK graduates feel that they are overlooked when it comes to employment, in favour of Australian or Canadian graduates, due to their indigenous mining backgrounds. To this, Martin recommends that UK graduates also study a second language; French perhaps, as this can give the graduate an advantage. The fundamental success of any business comes down to the people. Having people who were highly competent in their individual disciplines was key to the success of Toro. It’s surprising that many in the mining industry don’t deliver on their promises. One of Toro’s core principles is that it always makes sure to follow through on any promises given. This has led to an increase in trust in the company, and the reason for its lofty position as one of the more respected parts of the mining industry. The mining sector has something of an image issue. it is one of the more ignored in today’s civilisation, and yet it is perhaps the most important. There are hardly any goods on sale today that are not sourced from the proceeds of some kind of mining or exploration. Education is desperately needed in order to ensure the next generation of mining professionals. .BEST MOMENTS ’In those days, companies were still doing the “milk round”' ‘I’ve seen the sector from several different perspectives’ ‘It’s like Trivial Pursuit’ ’There’s no magic formula to it’ ‘It is actually a clean and ethical industry’ ‘We’re going to put the band back together' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Martin Horgan LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-horgan-038b298/?originalSubdomain=uk Resolute Mining - https://www.rml.com.au ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 54Risk Management In Mining – with Sarah Gordon of Satarla

In this podcast, we speak to Sarah Gordon, Managing Director at Satarla who are a global network of trainers, consultants and researchers who believe that risk management should be practical and enable real decisions to be made and acted on, with mining at the core of their business. Sarah often speaks at events and after seeing her talk earlier this year, and also having heard her speak at the recent Mines & Money event in London, I’m excited she agreed to appear on this podcast. We talk about how she got her first graduate role and gives some tips for graduates looking for their first job. This episode provides a great insight around risk management and what mining companies should be implementing not only in their due diligence but also during operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Geology is all about uncertainty. No geologist truly knows about what is going on beneath the surface of the planet until someone excavates. Geologists are like risk managers in this regard, and so transitioning to this sector was a natural movie for Sarah. Sarah got her break in Anglo-American by going to a careers fair, where Rio Tinto were promoting their student internship scheme. While applying for Tinto, she applied for Anglo, who contacted her first. Putting yourself out there is certainly a better way of getting yourself noticed when leaving education. Every opportunity is a good opportunity. Never be afraid to speak up. Go to events, talks and networking summits. Tell them you’re a student and you will often get reductions, and in most cases, free of charge. Make sure you have business cards and CVs printed when talking to potential employers. Make sure you stand out, and make sure you follow up! Satarla’s goal when it was founded, was to provide rick management that was practical and accessible at all levels of the organisation. Risk management varies from country to country. The issue many companies have is that they try to apply solutions and lessons learned to every territory worldwide. But they need to be re-evaluated on a territorial basis. Over the past few years, most other sectors have gradually brought all risk management sectors together into enterprise-wide risk management. Risk management is in danger of becoming overcomplicated by bureaucracy. It needs to become less management focussed and more assessment focussed. Simplify your process into four steps: Understand what the context is and how it’s changing together with your objectives. Identify those risks. Put in place the controls to manage those risks. Monitor, review, and report. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Within the world of geology you’re typically focussed upon what’s going on beneath the surface of the earth’ ‘When you’re trying to stand out, making sure everything is right helps’ ‘Make sure you hook into their memory’ ‘Risk management is that mechanism through which people can truly understand what the objectives are that they’re trying to achieve’ ‘Risk is being pushed into the management space instead of the assessment space' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Satarla - https://www.satarla.com Sarah Gordon LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarah-gordon-a618821a/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 53A Life In Mining – with Owen Hegarty of EMR Capital

Today’s podcast is with a very special guest: Owen Hegarty, a well renowned mining legend of the industry with over 40 years industry experience, who has managed and been involved with many mining companies and operations in Australia and Asia during his career. Owen is Executive Chairman of EMR Capital who are a specialist resources private equity company with over 300 years combined mining operational and investment experience. They own and operate 9 mining operations and projects in 7 countries globally, across 4 core commodities, with a proven track record in the three dimensions critical to achieving superior investment returns. In this episode we talk about his early days with Rio Tinto, how he then branched out on his own and what challenges he faced from a corporate role to the start of his entrepreneur journey. We also discuss how EMR Capital has developed as a company and what their future plans are. This is an interesting, informal and enjoyable podcast in the company of Owen, a man who has achieved much in the industry, and which is well worth a listen. KEY TAKEAWAYS Owen’s experience in the industry has stretched north of forty years. He joined Rio Tinto after leaving university, during a time in which graduates were highly sought after. Owen helped to grow the Mighty Ox from a few million dollars to a few billion dollars. It was an “overnight success” that took fifteen years. If you are confident in your experience, and if you have faith in the team you have assembled, then you will be able to grow your business and scale effectively. Owen states that initial choices of focus are key. The key areas in which to focus your attention when scaling are: Your team Your chosen commodities Project selection Investors The mining industry needs to remember that we are all guests in someone else’s land, and we should treat them with the according respect. EMR are very proud of their portfolio of projects, and are the result of extensive preparation and ongoing successful relationships built over many years. Potential projects need to be acceptable on several different criteria: They must have the potential scale Grade - The quality Conventional process - The project must not require operational advancements in order to make it work Low cost, long life and lots of upside benefits The regime must be stable and secure There must be a clear exit plan for the future .BEST MOMENTS ‘I was really very lucky to be involved in all commodities and all countries’ ‘I went from the big end of town to the small end of town’ ‘Choose your people well. Choose your commodities well. Choose your projects well. Choose your investors well. And then get on with it as though your life depends on it’ ‘You’re testing yourself all the time’ ‘We need to work with them and engender trust’ ‘It must have the scale and it must have the grade' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes EMR Capital - https://www.emrcapital.com/en-us Owen Hegarty - https://www.owenhegarty.com ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 52In Conversation With Ricus Grimbeek of Trevali Mining

In today’s podcast we interview Ricus Grimbeek, President and CEO at Trevali Mining Corporation, a base metals company with four mines in Peru, Canada, Namibia and Burkina Faso. Ricus is an experienced mining executive with nearly 30 years experience in the resource sector working in Australia, South Africa and Canada during his career. During this interview we chat how Trevali Mining is developing as a company and whats happening in the zinc market with the price of zinc decreasing. We also cover how technology is playing its part in the company and the realities of climate change on the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ricus began as a coal miner before breaking away to study mining in South Africa. He also spent a few years in corporate functions. This varied background has given him a rare insight into the many facets of the mining industry. Safety, health and sustainability are of paramount importance to Ricus and Trevali. In his opinion, safety should be guaranteed for all employees and the communities in 3which they operate. Ricus recommends a full practical knowledge of the mining business from the ground up, to anyone who wishes to enter the industry, including aspiring executives. The best advice Ricus offers to those wishing to jump from operations to corporate, is not to do it too early. Not only will the personal upheaval be too much, but it’s good to get as much on-the-job knowledge as possible. Trevali is one of the top zinc producers in the world. Ricus classifies this as one of the greenest metals, and one that will be more important in the future. Climate change has had long and short term impacts around the world. Places that are seeing water supply under threat are no longer as attractive to the industry, as it is such a key component in operations. Mining needs to lead by example, and show that good can come from their operations, whereas public perception may lead many to believe that it is environmentally detrimental. Processes such as underground mining can be beneficial. .BEST MOMENTS ‘From a young age I’ve been passionate about sustainability’ ‘You can’t tell governments and communities what to do. You have to be really good at listening’ ‘Don’t progress too early in your career’ ‘We’re not starting from ground zero’ ‘As an industry we need to take a step back’ ‘I’m very excited about what’s possible' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Ricus Grimbeek LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ricus-grimbeek-41a916b/?originalSubdomain=ca Ricus is going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money Conference from 25th -27th November and as Dig Deep The Mining Podcast is a partner to this event, then as a subscriber, you can take advantage of 25% discount by using the code DIG25 at check out. Ep 51The Gold Rush In Australian Mining – with Mike Jones of Impact Minerals

In this podcast, we interview Mike Jones, MD of Impact Minerals, an exploration company listed on the ASX with four extensive tenement holdings within Australia, (NSW, QLD & WA) featuring significant potential for high-grade mineral deposits of gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper and nickel. We discuss the Australian mining market and what challenges it faces as the market is buoyant, and the progress of Impact Minerals and what they are looking to achieve. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mining industry in Australia is extremely busy today. This is mainly due to a huge surge in gold and lithium, which led to money being poured into producers. A few huge discoveries in Victoria and in Western Australia, have led to the mining industry there turning a corner, and becoming sought after by investors. With the five-year downturn, mining in Australia has seen a large downturn in new recruits, especially amongst young people. Technology is fine, but there’s no substitute for human instinct. Blackridge is the main focus for Impact Minerals right now. It is the conglomerate host of gold projects and so acts as the epicentre of activity. Aside from normal operation challenges, the main issues affecting Impact are around technology. Advancements have meant huge challenges in data and applications, but also have increased productivity immensely. Over the next decade, Mike wants Impact to attract more value, which will allow the company to expand and to seek out wealthier resources. Persistence is the key in exploration. .BEST MOMENTS ‘It was a big step to take’ ‘I could probably run a mining company as badly as these people can!’ ‘Each of the cycles is different’ ‘It takes time, and time is money’ ’The amount of data generated is extraordinary’ ‘Hopefully I’ll be a yacht in the Mediterranean!' Ep 50The Wonderful World Of Pozzolan – In Conversation with Patrick Cheetham of Sunrise Resources

Todays guest is Patrick Cheetham, Chairman and MD of Sunrise Resources, a mining company who acquire, explore and develop mineral projects, and who are currently developing a project to mine natural pozzolan and perlite in Nevada, USA. We talk about the uses of natural pozzolan and perlite and how Sunrise Resources are developing the project in the US. KEY TAKEAWAYS Patrick’s background is in geology, and always found the subject fascinating. This stood him in good stead when he went to college, and subsequently was recruited by Western Mining in Australia. Sunrise began as a diamond exploration concern. After working in this market, Sunrise realised that raising capital was difficult, and so broadened its focus. Pozzolan is one of the most important deposits in the world and acts as a naturally occurring cement, and has numerous invaluable uses throughout the industrial world. Perlite has the additional property of popping when heated to high temperatures. This is used in horticulture to aerate soil, and is also used in insulation. Sunrise’s main consumers are ready-mix companies, who use pozzolan in concrete, which is a vital ingredient in fly ash. Pozzolan has a value similar to cement in terms of money. It doesn’t stand huge transport differences, and is mainly used in the USA. Mine permitting is key for Sunrise in the future, which will allow for production to begin in earnest when 2020 arrives. Agreements with utility providers, and sourcing water for projects are also high on the agenda. .BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s not as easy when you don’t have the money behind you!’ ‘Perlite pops like popcorn’ ’The Pantheon dome is still the world’s largest expanse of concrete’ ’There’s no natural pozzolan produced in the UK’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Sunrise Resources - https://www.sunriseresourcesplc.com Patrick Cheetham LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-cheetham-444a782/?originalSubdomain=uk https://www.mining-international.org/#one ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 49Rare Earths – Significant Success in Australia With Andrew Reid, COO of Hastings Technology Metals

Today’s podcast is with Andrew Reid, COO of Hastings Technology Metals, an ASX-listed leading Australian rare earths company with two rare earths projects in Western Australia. Rare earths are critical in the manufacture of a wide variety of new consumer and industrial technologies and these range from flat-screen TVs and energy-efficient light bulbs to hybrid cars, wind turbines and military hardware. In this episode, we talk their Yangibana Project and what they have achieved so far and what part this mine will play in the rare earth’s space which is significant outside of China. KEY TAKEAWAYS I spent my first ten years working in mining in Australia and then spent time in Africa. You need a diverse range of skills to work as an expat. You will work alongside others with both low and high-level skill sets and need to understand that for some education may be lower. Working as an expat is not for everyone the conditions can be difficult but I developed into the person I am with the skills I have as a result of my experiences. Hastings Technology was kickstarted in earnest in 2014 with an exploration program and the technical staff realised early on that the initial investigations were coming back with rare earth and in particular neodymium and praseodymium resources at Yangibana. Rare earths are on the periodic table and they always appear together. When you mine rare earths, you get them together and as a result, you need a complex processing plant. We are designing a processing plant that will nominally take about million tonnes of ore feed a year. You have to extract from the ground and then concentrate the elements to an economic level, separate them into a powdered oxide and further down the line into forms that can be turned into the final products. Powered magnets are a major component in the tsunami of electric vehicles we are seeing coming onto the market and Hasting Technology is now very well placed to meet the needs of a growing marketplace. When we are producing 3,400 tonnes this will be 6-7% of the world’s supply. The project will be in a very good position to be on the leading edge for receiving finance The rare earths mining market is unique mainly because its dominated and controlled so closely by China and a lot of the market is under long term contracts. The growing electric car sector is a continuing factor in the importance of rare earths as a commodity. There needs to be better awareness and education for people around rare earths. We are in very exciting times and Hastings Technology is at the forefront of new relationships. It takes its responsibilities and the opportunities that come with being involved in the technology of electric vehicles very seriously and as the use of permanent magnets globally in technology continues to grow the possible applications are increasing. BEST MOMENTS ‘There are many processes that are undertaken before you get to the end product’ ‘We have already received our early works permit and so have been able to build the infrastructure required for the project’ ‘The stamp of approval from the highest environmental group, the EPA is vital to allow the permits to be granted’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Dig Deep Mining Podcast Hastings Technology Metals website ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 48Coping With Mental Health Issues In The Workplace – with Michael Weston

Mental health is a topic that features heavily in the news these days. In this podcast we interview Michael Weston, an advocate & keynote speaker around mental health providing both the public and workplaces with an insight into his personal life experience, whilst highlighting the importance of mental health and wellbeing. Michael worked in the Western Australian mining industry for twenty years, when one day back in 2013 (ready for work), he was found by his neighbour, unconscious and not breathing. Whilst Michael survived, he spent the next two years searching for a diagnosis and answers to why he couldn't function as well as he had prior to the incident. As doctors and specialists began investigating further, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and an acquired brain injury (ABI) were diagnosed. The conclusion they came to was that work and a stressful work environment had contributed to his collapse, and so this episode may resonate with many of those who might be suffering similar conditions in the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS Michael spent many years working in the mining industry in Australia, in some of the most high-pressured and diverse sectors. But although the stress was high, Michael loved the job. One of the first signs that Michael was not doing well, was the change in his personality. His wife noticed to begin with, and commented that he wasn’t acting like himself. Soon afterwards, Michael was found collapsed, face-down on his driveway. The problem is that many people don’t receive physical warning signs when a collapse is imminent. Lack of concentration, and mindfulness, is often put down to simple fatigue, instead of being treated as a major warning beacon. Ultimately, Michael’s body refused to cooperate with his mind and shut itself down. Michael’s state of mind was seriously deteriorating, and had taken far too much on in the workplace. Anxiety and depression manifest early, and should always be discussed. Treatment should be sought as soon as possible, in order to prevent collapse and subsequent health issues. The first place to admit you’re feeling overwhelmed is at work. Tell your workplace that you are feeling consumed, and be honest. Finding a work life balance is as essential to lasting happiness as an efficient and healthy workplace. Allowing flexibility, and listening to our staff when they are troubled will save many issues down the line. .BEST MOMENTS ’There was a bit of gold at the end of the tunnel’ ‘Red isn’t always bad’ ‘I need to get to work. I’m going to be late for a meeting…' ‘We were all under the pump’ ‘You’ve got to put your hand up for help’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes www.michaelweston.com.au Michael Weston LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelweston1/?originalSubdomain=au Michael Weston Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MichaelWestonBrainInjury Michael Weston Twitter - https://twitter.com/michaelweston26 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 47The Challenges Of Papua New Guinea – with John Lewins

In this episode we chat to John Lewins, CEO of K92 Mining Inc, a gold mining producer with an operating mine in Papua New Guinea. We talk about how the company has progressed, how it has achieved its incredible results, and what plans they have for the future. We discuss what opportunity challenges and opportunity lie within Papua New Guinea, and how the mining industry can develop in the country. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the low, sustaining costs they have, K92 are generating good cash flow, and next year is predicting cashflow in excess of eighteen million US dollars. K92 have exploration on their mining lease, including five diamond drilling rigs; two from the surface and three underground. This allows three thousand a month in diamond drilling from the combined five rigs. Papua New Guinea has some of the best geology in the world, but there are three fundamental challenges there: Climate - Very high rainfall area. Geography/Topography - Many mines are in the highlands or on islands, which makes building mining infrastructure difficult. Community - Eight million people speaking eight hundred languages. PNG has less than two hundred thousand taxpayers out of eight million people, which means that many people there are subsitence farmers. Land is incredibly important, therefore, and so mining can prove very challenging. Jobs are very important. The future is also crucial. Ep 46The Future Generation – An Interview with Darren Starlow

In this episode, we chat to Darren Stralow, Chief Development Officer at Northern Star, an Australian gold producer with Tier-1 world-class projects located in highly prospective and low sovereign risk regions of Australia and North America, and who have a portfolio of low-cost, high-grade underground gold mines, and who are listed on the ASX. We talk about the key attributes and major differences about degrees in the past, to the new degrees that should be taught now and beyond, and why and how we can improve the image of mining with the younger generation. KEY TAKEAWAYS The whole mining industry got a wake-up call last year, when there was a sudden and drastic drop in enrolments for mining engineer positions in Australian tertiary institutions. There used to be over 200 mining graduates per year from Australian universities. In 2018, there were under 40 first-year students enrolled in the entirety of Australia. For an industry that contributes so much to the Australian way of life, this was alarming. Automation, digitisation and electrification are all advances that are changing the face of the industry. But we must never lose sight of the fact that this is primarily a people business, and that people can never be replaced. The scientific basics of engineering, mining methods and technology, should form the core of all mining education, as well as the licence to operate, and how mining contributes towards society. We need to show that the industry is progressive. It’s not just digging holes. There are other focus points, and a universe of pursuits that can range from everything from health to science. .BEST MOMENTS ‘We obviously haven’t done ourselves any favours in terms of perception of the industry’ ‘We were doing something wrong when it came to attracting people to the industry’ ’The industry has been changing in recent years’ ‘We can’t lose focus on the fundamentals’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Darren Starlow will be speaking at the upcoming IMARC Conference in Melbourne from 29-31st October where he will be doing a presentation around “The Mining Engineering degrees of the future: How these must differ from the past and include new and relevant skills”. Ep 45Diamonds Are Forever – with James Campbell of Botswana Diamonds

Today’s guest is James Campbell, the Managing Director Of Botswana Diamonds, a diamond exploration and development company operating in Botswana and South Africa. James has spent over thirty years in the diamond industry in a variety of roles, and so has accrued during his experiences, a vast and fascinating wealth of knowledge, some of which he’ll be sharing on this week’s episode. The diamond industry is one of the lesser-known, and so this conversation will prove an insightful and endlessly interesting journey into and around the diamond industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS James is drawn to diamonds on an emotional level. To him, diamonds represent all that’s good about humanity. Diamonds are the ultimate gift of love; the ultimate expression of love. The assessment and exploration of diamond resources is one of the most technically challenging in commodity and resource development. To work in the sector, and to be successful, it is incumbent on operators to be experienced and knowledgeable. In diamonds, you have three different variables that must be measured: Volume Mass of the deposit Grade - measured in karats per 100 tons Diamonds are not just for cosmetic use. They are also used for cutting tools (diamond dust), and are currently being used in computing (conductors). This means that diamonds are in ever-increasing demand. Fifty percent of the world’s diamonds are typically sold in America. Fifty percent of those are typically sold between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The economy there under Trump is doing extraordinarily well, and this is being reflected in the uptake of aspirational items. At the moment, Botswana Diamonds are focussed purely on Southern Africa: South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. These are all relatively close to BD’s base in Johannesburg. James is the sole permanent employee of the company, and sees Southern Africa as the most prospective area in the world for diamond development. The two major countries for diamond development outside of Southern Africa are Russia and Canada. Russia contains the second-largest diamond mine in the world. Canada contains explorations by De Beers and Mountain Province. Also, Canada’s Toronto Stock exchange is extremely robust. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Diamonds are the ultimate expression of love’ ’The diamond market is cyclical, but the diamond market is not just one market’ ‘As economies grow, so too does the demand for diamonds’ ‘Like any mining environment, many of the jobs will be commoditised’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes James Campbell LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesahcampbell/?originalSubdomain=za Botswana Diamonds - http://botswanadiamonds.co.uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 44People And Culture In Mining Organisations

In this episode, Rob chats to Sam Retallack, Head of People and Culture at Independence Group (IGO), a leading ASX-listed exploration and mining company based in Perth, who have a strategic focus on high quality assets of scale and longevity including Gold, Nickel/Copper assets in WA and exploration developments in WA & NT. Sam has been in human resources for a number of years and joined IGO back in 2012, and so has a wealth of experience in workforce culture and a deep understanding of what mining companies need to do to change to develop and grow with this ever-changing world we live in. We talk about what companies need to do to improve their culture, how they can do it, and the challenges that mining companies face in getting this right? KEY TAKEAWAYS Having come from a very different background to many in the mining industry, Sam has a unique perspective based upon many different forms of business. People and culture is the thing that enables the rest of the business. There is no achievement of strategy without the people. Sam’s role is to oversee the building of the people relations and culture, and believes it is the bedrock of all things they do. The public perception of the mining industry puts many off from joining it. People still see it as a male-dominated, dangerous and very physical industry, which it can be. But things have changed dramatically over the years. Mining now includes a wealth and breadth of different pursuits. Education on this subject is paramount. There are no good or bad cultures. There are only appropriate and inappropriate cultures. Some companies require different cultures, and it’s a case of finding the right people for the right culture in the right business. Strategy and culture need to go hand in hand. People will choose their own culture anyway, which may go against your chosen strategy. It’s difficult to herd your people back into line once this happens. As an organisation, you need complete reviews of what is working and what isn’t, but it needs to be ongoing and organic. The old concept of a post-action review just can’t be done that well or effectively. Mining companies can improve their cultures by looking seriously at two things: Co-creation - you must ask the questions and listen to the responses from your people. Then grow it with their help. Examine your leadership - If your leaders aren’t emotionally mature enough to embrace co-creation, then you’ll never achieve an effective culture. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I come from a very untraditional mining background’ ’There is no achievement of strategy without the people’ ‘Mining is a sustaining career’ ’There are no good or bad cultures’ ‘People are tribal. Humans are tribal' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Sam Retallack is going to be speaking at the upcoming IMARC Conference in Melbourne from 29-31st October, where she will be on a panel of speakers discussing: What stops us from implementing change in our workforces AND How do we overcome the non-technical issues to achieve business transformation, innovation and a workforce of the future? Ep 43How History, War and Conflict Repeat Themselves, and How They Affect The Global Resources Market

In this week’s show, entrepreneur David Murrin discusses his work around decoding major historical events to forecast global change in today’s world, helping you to make informed decisions that avoid repeating past destructive cycles so that you can create positive actionable strategies for the future. David has written two books, including 'Breaking The Code of History' which post 9/11, recognises that the world had changed in an instant, and highlights the key process in human social structures that impact on today’s changing world. Join Rob and David now for this fascinating episode featuring a wealth of hidden agenda. KEY TAKEAWAYS One person’s energy can charge other people’s like a capacitor, but time will decay the charge. If we can survive this peak, then the charge will die down. This is how the world has always seemed to work. David joined JP Morgan because meritocracy was rewarded. He joined the company in order to take risk and win big, and found the risk industry fascinating. Post 9/11, David’s world view completely changed. America’s world influence had peaked, and so the strike against it was even more damaging. David used his newfound knowledge and techniques in the post-9/11 world to more accurately predict the rise and fall of the resource market values, which made him extremely valuable to companies like JP Morgan. It’s usually the commodity price appreciation that leads to conflict. Humans fight over one thing, and that’s resources. We may mask this with religious constructs, but it always boils down to resources. America has to extract itself from the grip of Chinese manufacturing, and Trump has made it clear that this is what he wants. Ultimately, the world will be split between two powers when it comes to resources. A greater trend toward automation is inevitable. Systemisation and the use of AI to find resources underground is definitely coming. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I was standing there among sixty hungry cannibals’ ‘We make decisions as a collective entity’ ‘We’re heading into one of those periods now’ ’There will only be an increase in friction’ ’There is a two way arms race coming' VALUABLE RESOURCES Email: [email protected] Website: https://www.mining-international.org/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theminingpodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast/videos ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 42Trade Wars And Rare Earth – with Rocky Smith

Whats happening in the “rare earths” space? It’s a return engagement for Rocky Smith of Peak Resources, who’s here for the second time to give us a deeper insight to rare earth space. We talk about the effects of the recent trade war between USA and China on rare earth producers and consumers, and the biggest barriers to new operators for building and operating a rare earth refinery. The magnet space is about to slowly pick up momentum with the the increase of EV activity, so it's an interesting time for anyone who is in, or thinking of getting into, the rare earths space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Some of the suppliers in the US are having trouble with tariffs going into that market. China made the threat of withholding rare earths from the US, which highlighted the fact that the US have supported the Chinese government plan to control rare earths. They currently have 80% control of the rare earth market. The challenges facing companies and indeed countries, wishing to hunt for and produce rare earths, are economical and technological. President Trump’s order to increase magnet production for the US military is good news for the rare earths industry. By 2021, the demand will equal or exceed supply for existing manufacturing projects, and then going forward, the gap should widen. That’s why it’s important for new suppliers to be promoted and pushed to succeed. The plants for rare earth are complex and costly. If you have a process that deals with difficult minerals, then technically you have risks, so you need to be cautious when putting your finance plan together. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Most of the G7 countries were willing to take the value from the low cost Chinese rare earths, and let some manufacturing move from around the world and focus on China’ ‘It’s important to make sure we’re working on a number of things at the same time’ ‘It takes anywhere from five to ten years to get one of these things up and running’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Rocky Smith on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rocky-smith-7a789210/?originalSubdomain=au Peak Resources - https://www.peakresources.com.au/member/rocky-smith/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 41The Future of Mining with Wearables - Interview with Andrew Swart, Deloittes

In today’s podcast, we talk to a previous guest. He produced a report exploring the key mining trends in 2019 which is definitely worth a listen and is now back with another report Deloitte’s in partnership with NORCAT “The future of mining with wearables - exploring the health, safety, and environmental benefits of wearables and how to leverage the technology to achieve better outcomes for mining companies around the world. The report looks at some really interesting considerations around wearables such as privacy around data collection, engagement strategies with unions and other stakeholders, along with the challenges around implementation and scaling the technology. KEY TAKEAWAYS The report This is the fourth report released by Deloittes in partnership with NORCAT, a technology and innovation centre based in the heart of the mining in Ontario, Canada. The location serves as a positive area for collisions, bringing different technologies together to interact with each other within an operational mining environment. This report deals with the future of wearables and is published at a time of heightened scrutiny on safety and as technology is taking over in the mining industry. The broader wave of digital is transforming the way people actually operate, the work they are doing and the way it is executed. Within this area, wearables have a key role in both environmental monitoring and workers health. Developing strategies for wearables moving forward It’s vital that mining companies first identify the problem then right wearable required in the situation. Taking a user-centric view of the technology is key, how is the worker going to utilise the technology on a day to day basis and how will it help them? Wearables have a crucial role to play in the health and safety of workers, they are the modern technological equivalent of the canary in a coal mine. It allows to not just one thing but multiple environmental factors to be monitored Increasing the adoption of wearables User centricity is key if the wearer is expected to wear the item for a considerable amount of time it must be comfortable and easy to use. Piloting the wearable ensures the technology has user-centricity. To increase the use of wearables it is vital that there is a clear understanding of the stakeholders involved and that concerns are addressed. Challenges for scaling of the wearables market You must have a view on the end-use of the technology and fully understand the user-centricity. The collection of data and privacy controls are vital to ensure the protection of workers. It is possible for wearables to not be associated with an individual and there are mechanisms where you can blind the data. Using the data as part of a shared dialogue between workers and management can be vital in the successful integration of this technology into the work environment. BEST MOMENTS ‘It allows to not just one thing but multiple environmental factors to be monitored’ ‘If things do go wrong then wearables can aid in the location of workers for search and rescue teams’ ‘There are a myriad of technologies out there and its vital that you look beyond the technology and understand what problem you are trying to solve’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Dig Deep Mining Podcast [email protected] The Future of Mining with Wearables PDF Report ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 40Gold And Its Place In The World – with John Scurci

In today's podcast Rob interviews John Scurci, the Partner & Portfolio Manager and COO of Corona Associates Capital Management, a discretionary global macro long/short hedge fund seeking absolute returns, with a core strategy focused on precious metals and global mining equities. John’s began his career on Wall Street working for the likes of Morgan Stanley, and with a career spanning forty years, has built a wealth of knowledge and experience of global markets especially in the commodities and resources space. We discuss the relationship between gold and the US dollar, the presence of bitcoin in the mining industry, and the best and most effective ways of strategically investing and playing in the precious metals mining market today. KEY TAKEAWAYS 60 to 70 percent of all the new capital that has entered the US equity markets, has come from companies repurchasing their stock. This is in contract some a few decades ago when this practice was illegal. John foresees a day in the not-too-distant future, when the practice once again becomes outlawed. Corona began as an effort to capitalise on what they perceived was a misperception in the markets of where they were headed, specifically their view on valuations, value, and the role of gold and debt. John and his associates took a very different view, and believed that big returns in the markets are driven by changes in perception. In terms of general equities, John looks at balance sheets, cash flow statements, market cap and valuation when it comes to investment opportunities in gold and silver. Our global economy does not expand without the expansion of debt. We’re at a point where the world has the greatest amount of debt in history. The world’s economies aren’t expanding at present, and are in fact on the verge of contracting. The price of gold measured in dollars has gone up, even though the value of the dollar itself has also gone up. The dollar has risen because of a constant bid for dollars themselves in order to repay debt. Gold is rising because of fear. Gold is not a commodity. It’s money. Around 180,000 tons is known to exist and all of it is owned. It can be traded at any time. This makes it a form of currency. Although they are two precious metals, the fundamental difference between gold and silver, is that gold is the primary monetary metal, and it is what the central banks own. Therefore, it is the instrument used by the banks if they ever need instant currency. The world is starved in terms of alternative currencies and means to store wealth. John’s own view is that bitcoin is not an effective way to do this because of its volatility, and because of the simple fact that the amount of electricity used to perpetuate it is extraordinarily inefficient. Uranium is going to be a very important source for our energy requirement in the coming years. There are environmental risks that need to be planned and managed, and also factored into the cost of uranium production. But it is clean from an emissions viewpoint and relatively plentiful. .BEST MOMENTS ‘What Wall Street really is, is a financial product factory’ ‘We were about to shift into an era of real assets’ ‘Gold is not an easy asset to value from a financial perspective’ ’The dollar is the world’s most certain funding currency’ ’The amount of money that is required in order to move the needle is absolutely breath-taking to think about’ ’The only reason to sell gold is to manage its price' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Corona Associates Capital Management - http://www.coronacap.com John Scurci on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-scurci-ba907979/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 39Roxgold and How They’ve Developed in West Africa – with John Dorward

In this episode Rob interviews John Dorward, President & CEO of Roxgold, a Canadian-based gold mining company with assets located in West Africa. We discuss the how Roxgold is developing their assets with great success, and the challenges of CSR within those countries and changes of power within Burkina Faso when John joined the company. He gives his predictions of the gold market and what lies ahead in mining within Burkina Faso, Cote D’lvoire and other West African countries. KEY TAKEAWAYS Projects can move forward very rapidly in West Africa, where countries are very keen to encourage foreign investment. The governments there seem to understand that investment means opportunity, and all goes towards making their countries stronger and more viable on a world platform. Roxgold is in wonderful financial shape due to wise investments and a profitable operation that has allowed the company to attract shareholders and investors, as well as make investments in subsequent operations in West Africa. The main challenges being face in West Africa are really in political stability. When the president of Burkina Faso hit his term limit, and was forced to step down, he chose not to. This caused something of an uprising, which impacted operations there immediately. One of Roxgold’s main aims is to be a good neighbour to the communities in which it establishes itself. Sharing wealth and opportunity with the areas in which it operates is key to improving its standing as a company worth working with. Keeping promises and not making excuses is key to improving the reputation of mining. Investment in education and buying from local suppliers whenever possible is important, as well as supporting local entrepreneurs. Respect is always important. John predicts that the scene is very well set up for gold. Gold tends to rally when it drops, and there is a real interest in gold around the world at the moment. Economies are in uncharted territories right now, so caution should always be applied. .BEST MOMENTS ’Some of the geologists I’ve met, there’s no way that I’d ever be able to understand where they’re coming from!’ ‘We prefer to refer to it as an “unscheduled change of government”' ‘We have a responsibility to share the wealth and share the benefits’ ‘Whatever we say, we do’ ‘You can give a number, or you can give a date. This week, Rob is in conversation with John Mulligan, one of the directors of the World Gold Council, a market development organisation for the gold industry. John explains his role there, as well as the broader role of the Gold Council in the mining industry itself, how it was founded and with what purpose, as well as its influence on today’s industry. This is a fascinating conversation that will allow anyone interested to see a very different side of the industry, as well as the future of gold in the wider world. KEY TAKEAWAYS The World Gold Council was formed in 1987 by some of the larger gold miners at the time, who realised that they were mainly operating a very long way away from where their gold was being consumed. Even in the modern age this is true. They needed an organisation that could protect and create a healthy market for the product on their behalf. The Conflict-Free Gold Mining Standard - this was introduced at the behest of the gold miners collective and the council, which allows gold miners to potentially operate in riskier areas in a way that is transparent and responsible. The Gold Council’s expertise lie in markets, analysis, policy, marketing and communications. Their members are from a wide variety of professions, so as to be able to be better equipped to provide advice and direction for its members. Technology and innovation are driving change in the industry. Events and publications are all speaking of the many advancements that mining is currently working on. John sees this as key to the future of the industry. Environmental, Social and Governmental advancements have the potential to change the public’s perception of the gold industry, as well as improve its standing with potential investors. In the long term, the gold market is in a relatively robust state and has been for some time. Supply and demand is strong. The growth path is sound, and its production ratio is in alignment with global mega-trends. China has evolved into the world’s largest gold producer, importer and consumer. This is remarkable when you consider that in the late 90’s, there was no significant market there. Of the 3,500 tons mined each year, 1,000 is consumed exclusively by China, almost a third of the total output. The gold market was affected greatly by the fragility and eventual breakdown of financial institutions during the financial crisis. The majority of the world’s central bank reserves are held in dollar-denominated assets. The recent rise of nationalism and populism have challenged certain assumptions about globalisation, foreign investment, and the path to development and prosperity. This will make the mining landscape riskier, but can be solved through legal and regulatory stability. .BEST MOMENTS ‘Investment is where value and volume can be created’ ’Now we try and bridge the whole gap from the miners to the markets’ ‘When technology is used in an integrated fashion, then it has the potential to transform the industry’ ‘Most gold miners don’t operate where gold is bought. Well, China do!’ ’Last year was a record in the modern era for gold purchasing' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Email John at: [email protected] The Gold Council’s Website: https://www.gold.org John Mulligan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mulligan-7a5303a/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 37Angola – A Mining Destination For The Future?

In this podcast, we interview Tim George, the CEO Pensana Metals Ltd who are heading towards being a significant supplier of raw materials to the magnet metal market, and who are currently developing a mine in Angola. Tim is here to discuss the opportunities of mining in Angola and the infrastructure that is currently present in the country. We also talk about Pensana Metal’s Longonjo project who will be a significant supplier of raw materials to the expanding magnet metal market - a market driven by the electrification of transport and the drive to green energy generation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Angola has always been focussed on oil in terms of major revenue streams. International concerns have been mining the area for decades. The government is doing its best to turn the economy away from oil and gas now, and is actively promoting mining, tourism and agriculture. The Chinese have put a lot of money into rebuilding the Angolan transport infrastructure, including an essential railway system which has meant a huge access vein has been opened in the country. Developing and maintaining a healthy relationship with the Angolan government has been of huge benefit. But it’s important to have this relationship right the way down through the chain, including with local governments and councils. Access has been a problem in the past, but with the investment in turning the country into an investment opportunity, including clearing land mines, Angola has become a viable target for many international companies. Tim believes that the key to an development going forward is to get out there and integrate as much as possible with the country, not only to decide if the project is right for your company, but also to see if the project is a fit for the environment and its inhabitants. The impact of any mining operation will be significant, environmentally and economically. We must always make sure that these effects are positive. BEST MOMENTS ’For the first time in 35 years you have cheap hydro-electric power available to that region’ ’Now effectively Angola has an over-supply of power’ ‘It’s a project that’s designed to make use of the existing infrastructure’ ’These windows of opportunity don’t come along very often’ ‘You really need to get your boots on the ground' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes https://www.pensanametals.com Tim George - Bloomberg Profile - https://www.bloomberg.com/profile/person/21037248 [email protected] ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 36Jeff Quartermaine Of The Challenges Of Mining

In this episode, Rob talks to Jeff Quartermaine, MD & CEO of Perseus Mining, a diversified and multi-jurisdiction West African-focused gold production, development and exploration company with operations in Ghana & Cote d’Iviore. Join the conversation about how Perseus Mining has developed as a company, the challenges of mining in Ghana & Cote d’lvoire and how to develop CSR with governments and local communities in those jurisdictions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Perseus have gone from being a single-mine single-country exposure to having two operations, one in Ghana and one in Cote D’Ivoire, with a new development also beginning in the latter. To become a successful mining operation, you need five things: Good physical assets grounded in solid infrastructure A good human resource base made up of a good quality team Funding - without funding and investment you can’t go anywhere Markets for your products A social licence to operate. A core value of Perseus is to deliver on its promises. This is especially important when it comes to dealing with governments, where outcomes are promised, and Perseus prides itself on having delivered on those. Ghana has many prospects when it comes to mining, but in Jeff’s opinion, the government needs to do some work to ensure that the country is a suitable environment for potential investors to take risks in. Perseus have set themselves the goal of producing around half a million ounces of gold by 2022, and aim to generate and sustain several hundfred millions of dollars a year by then. Investing in a third country, too, will ensure that risk can be spread and managed. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I got typecast very early on as someone who could sort out very complex situations’ ‘The biggest challenge I’ve had is to build the trust of our shareholders’ Foreigners often go into countries and take a lot out, but leave very little behind’ ‘What governments seem to forget is that international investors have choices’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Perseus Mining - http://www.perseusmining.com Jeff Quartermaine - LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 35Marco Maestri On Mining Consultancy!

In this episode, Rob Tyson talks to Marco Maestri, the Mining Group Leader at Golder, one of the main providers of independent consultancy, design and construction services to the mining industry at large, who explains the various stages of how a consultant in the mining industry develops their career into management and what key skills, attributes and best practices are needed to develop yourself within this field. Packed with great content, this episode is aimed at anyone looking to begin their journey into the consultancy field or consultants already in the sector, with details on how and what they should develop to improve their career prospects. KEY TAKEAWAYS Joining as a consultant at the start of a business’s life gave Marco a unique perspective on what the work meant to the birth and survival of a company, instead of being a mere employee. One of the main attractions of becoming a part of the mining industry was the chance to travel and to experience different cultures. Marco’s division focusses on study work, front end services, mine design, resource modelling, geotechnical design, water, waste and permitting, meaning his remit is extraordinarily large and all-encompassing. In Marco’s opinion, a good consultancy is built upon diversity first and foremost. An individual consultant must show a talent and understanding of engineering, project management, an eye for detail, and entrepreneurialism. Having an open mind and a positive attitude towards working on projects, as well as surrounding yourself with successful people in your field will allow you to gain, by osmosis, the skills you need to progress further in your career. As your career progresses you can expect to do less and less practical and technical work, because that’s part of the life-cycle of being a consultant. If this doesn’t happen then maybe something is wrong. Before you can properly grow and develop your team, Marco advises a better understanding of the marketplace itself, as well as your competition. Only by doing this can we establish the kind of team needed in order to face these challenges. The outlook for Golder is bright with more innovation and investment on the horizon. Golder are also investing heavily in bolstering existing mining projects as well as searching out new opportunities. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I joined just before the crash. It wasn’t my fault, I just want to make that clear!’ ‘It was great to go out there and do these things; to immerse yourself in a different area and culture’ ‘Start to think strategically’ ‘Experience is one of the most important things, but you’ve got to be present in order to get that experience in the first place’ ‘We’re getting close to a boom time again’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Marco Maestri - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcomaestri1/ Golder - https://www.golder.com ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 34Robert Fig On 'Risk Management'

How many mining companies really analyse risk? In this podcast, Rob interviews Robert Fig who specialises in commodity risk management, and who has worked in the banking and mining industry for over thirty years gaining a deep understanding of the risks involved for companies within the mining sector. We talk about the difference between transactional and strategic hedging and what safeguards exist around it to protect companies such as those the world saw trying to chase up the prices prior to the crash of 2008. We also discuss and identify the major internal costs involved in setting up the infrastructure needed in order to be hedging in the first place. How do we identify these risks? What reporting systems are needed? What instruments are required, and where do we go for the required training? KEY TAKEAWAYS The first major risk that mining companies seem to face is that they are producers of metal, and between the time it is mined and the time it is sold, companies are at risk of the metal’s price going down. Risk management is all about “locking in” that period of risk, so that a mining company can protect itself from a falling price. The second risk is that companies are often sitting upon huge inventories of metal that again can be affected by falling prices. The tactic is to often “forward-sell” these inventories so as to lock in a price and prevent risk. The ever-emerging market for electric cars and their batteries has seen a huge effect on the mining industry. Materials used for batteries, in particular, are of particular value at the moment and look set to stay so for a long time. Transactional hedging is when a buyer agrees a forward-selling price over the term of a contract with a mining company. The buyer is then protected if the price of the material goes up, and the mining company is protected in case it falls. Strategic hedging is locking in the price of a commodity at a slightly lower price for a fixed period, so that falling values could essentially be insured against. There seems to be increasing reluctance in the industry to utilise strategic hedging as a way of managing risk, which Robert believes is a mistake as it allows companies to smooth out volatility on their balance sheets. Risk management must adhere to strict government controls, it requires the correct software, it must follow company policies, and be performed by a rigorously trained body of staff. Risk management done correctly can be extremely advantageous to a company’s bottom line, and will lead to an increase of reputation between your company and lenders. BEST MOMENTS 'Mining is a precarious business. Commodities go through fairly volatile periods' 'One really has to understand what happened in the lead-up to the crash of 2008’ ‘We’re still seeing the consequences and fallout from investors leaving the mining industry, which I think is a serious problem’ ‘Strategic hedging is not plug-and-play’ ‘It’s terribly important for any company to manage risk to a very high standard' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunesThe Metals Risk TeamRobert Fig - Email ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 33Rick Howes Of Dundee Precious Metals on the Challenges and Rewards of Mining in Eastern Europe

In this week’s show, Rob talks to Rick Howes, President & CEO of Dundee Precious Metals, a Canadian based international gold mining company engaged in the acquisition, exploration, development, mining and processing of precious metals. Dundee own and operate a gold, copper and silver mine in Bulgaria and have a processing facility in Namibia. Listen as Rob and Rick talk about how Dundee Precious Metals has developed over time, and of the challenges they had to overcome in order to establish a successful mining operation in East Europe. KEY TAKEAWAYS Dundee Precious Metals are heavily invested in gold production, and are looking to expand their gold production facilities in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe within the next five to ten years. This was born out of an investment opportunity in Bulgaria that Dundee took advantage of, and which has paid off handsome dividends. Political stability, and joining the EU in the 2000’s suddenly made Bulgaria and Romania viable sites for mining production. Rick stresses the importance of political stability in planning achievable mining goals. Bulgaria has a highly-educated populace, and presents many attractive opportunities in terms of taxation and royalty benefits due to the governments determination to attract foreign investment. Joining the EU seems to be a huge benefit to mining operations looking for viable sites in Europe. Countries have to adhere to EU standards on democracy and infrastructure, meaning that much time and money is being spent by government on making their countries attractive to foreign investors. Learning about potential cultures and areas is key to mining companies and businesses in general, in order to ingratiate themselves in foreign markets. Community, social and government relations are the key to success in this. Development of people and technology are the future of mining. Rick believes his legacy lies in exploring the benefits that exponential technological advancements can bring to the job, as well as improving the public image of mining as a whole. BEST MOMENTS ‘Once the country joined the EU, we got the benefit of some pro-democracy, and pro-business status’ ‘It took a while to build a level of trust and understanding’ ‘You have to take the time to figure out how things work around the world in order to form those relationships’ ‘Patience is one of our core strengths’ ‘I like mining because of the international nature of the business’ ‘The community of mining is quite tight. Ep 32Rick Rule Of Sprott US Holdings On Why Investment Is Key To Mining’s Survival

Rick Rule is the President & CEO of Sprott U.S Holdings and a highly experienced investor and speculator, focused on sub $1,000,000,000 market capitalization public and private issuers in natural resource industries. He has led and participated in hundreds of privately placed debt and equity issuances for resource companies operating internationally, and is also a sought-after investment conference speaker, having presented at hundreds of resource and investment conferences over the last thirty years. In this podcast Rob talks to Rick about commodities in terms of bull-and-bear markets, what make good investments and how should CEO’s position themselves to raise funds? Also, they discuss the commodities and countries in which Rick believes there will be growth. A must-listen-to episode for anyone looking to invest in the resources sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS So determined was Rick to learn all he could about the finance side of natural resources, that he emigrated to Canada and attended the University of British Columbia. Rick enjoys his job and his chosen vocation so much, that he truly sees it as not work. Rick believes that no matter what the economic climate may be, investment is paramount to survival in the mining industry. He insists that continually investing even in the face of a few harsh years for the mining industry, have helped Sprott to cement their position as one of the largest investors and speculators in the business. Since the legalisation of cannabis in certain areas of the world, the cannabis market is attracting speculative capital at the expense of the mining business. Rick believes that this is actually a good thing as some junior miners and management teams who were perhaps not as devoted or as skilled in the art of mining, have chosen to move to the cannabis industry. When looking at companies to invest in, value is created by people. Rick and Sprott want to do business with people they know and believe in, or in companies in which those they already trust, believe in. But in addition to proven success, Sprott are also convinced that a company’s specific skill-set must match the task at hand. Rick believes the industry is in fact over-capitalised. Of the 1500 listings, Rick considers around 1200 to be non-viable, and the fact that they have bids in place is evidence of over-capitalisation. For those wishing to speculate or invest in mining projects, Rick advises looking for companies involved in large Tier 1 or Tier 2 projects in the early stage. Grade matters, and so does size. Expertise and a track record of success are essentials, as is alignment. When you set the price of a commodity below the cost of producing that commodity, over a long period of time the mining industry’s ability to keep producing it becomes constrained. When you balance supply-and-demand by reducing the supply element, as the market “firms”, the industry is no longer able to increase supply to meet demand. Copper is difficult to mine and expensive to initiate when it comes to new mines. There seems to be a lot of focus on copper at the moment as it’s a necessary component for the growing electric car market. But Rick advises that copper is required for way more than just electric cars. It’s also a vital component in providing material goods to those who have recently found wealth. This is why its value has recently risen, and will again. The Democratic Republic of Congo has a lot of what the world needs in terms of resources and is an area that will be highly valuable in terms of investment in the coming years. In Rick’s opinion, there is a tremendous challenge arriving for the mining industry in terms of skills. Many seem to be placing the responsibility for the future of mining on older shoulders, where he believes that a younger generation should instead be trained and instructed using the wisdom and knowledge of older miners, in order to ensure the prosperity and long term prospects of the business. .BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m a born boy!’ ‘Sometimes I resent going home at night. It’s a business that’s treated me very well’ ‘This business is deeply, deeply cyclical and capital intensive’ ‘You are either a contrarian or you will be a victim’ ‘My personal expertise in cannabis ended four decades ago!’ ‘The back side of a hockey stick is just as steep as the front side’ ‘Mining is a knowledge business. Ep 31Altus Strategies And The Importance Of Networking – With Steve Poulton

Rob talks to Steve Poulton, Founder of Altus Strategies PLC, which is listed on the London & Toronto Stock Exchange. Altus are a project and royalty generator in the mining sector with a focus on Africa who create value by making mineral discoveries across multiple licences. In this episode we talk about the importance of mentoring and networking in furthering your career and what Altus Strategies are achieving in the exploration and geology space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Steve employed a natural entrepreneurial mindset to take advantage of the lack of competition in the sector, and carve out a collection of new companies, including Ariana, and ultimately Altus, having gleaned a number of skills and a thirst for business from his brief, yet intense career thus far. Steve was not interested in a career spent working for someone else. He wanted to see what he could personally achieve in his working life,m with the aim of reaping as many benefits for himself as he could. Mentoring is very important in the Altus environment. By helping his team to be the best that they can be, not only does it improve the strength of his company, but also of the mining industry as aa whole. Steve is happy to know that he is contributing to the future of the industry. Both Steve and Rob stress the importance of networking as part of your mining career. Knowing the right people, mixing with those with more experience, and learning from the mistakes of those who walked the path before you, is a vital component of your growth and development in the mining industry. Steve chose to focus on Africa because of the “prospectivity", the ease of finding materials to mine, and also because of the simplicity of obtaining the right licences from the government. Africa is unexplored and has rich potential for geological discovery. Technological advances are causing huge shifts in the mining industry. Some mines are now fully automated, and leaps in tech can lead to a wealth of untapped discoveries. But the industry will always need people. Altus’s business model is primarily generative exploration, exploring the geology of Africa, looking for areas that are perhaps less fashionable than others, applying for licences based on having undertaken deep remote sensing study on a region or area. Steve is devoted to mining because of the variety of the job, the fact that no two days are ever the same, plus it offers a wealth of challenges and rewards that Steve finds personally intoxicating. Altus’s responsibilities to its shareholders will always be of paramount importance to Steve. The drive to ensure that his investor’s capital is always on the increase spurs him on each day to achieve more, and to make Altus as successful as possible. Mining is an industry in which you get out what you put in. Steve stresses the fact that you need to work as hard as you possibly can. Keep going and you’ll be successful in the end. Take on all the challenges you can and look for the bright spots. Make your mining career as enjoyable as possible. BEST MOMENTS ‘I always had an ambition to work for myself’ ‘Everyone has setbacks and challenges. But a little bit of luck doesn’t go amiss’ ‘Having a strong network is one of the greatest strengths you can have in the mining sector’ ‘We’re focussed on Africa because you can find things there very quickly’ ‘It’s only a matter of time before the market wakes up to the opportunity in mining’ ‘There are hurdles in the process, but the prize is fantastic if you’re able to achieve it’ ‘The key to success is to wake early, work hard and strike oil’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Altus Strategies [email protected] Steve Poulton - LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 30Uranium & The Future - With Daniel Major

Today’s podcast is all about Uranium, and features an interview with Daniel Major, CEO of GoviEX Uranium, a mineral resources company focused on the exploration and development of uranium properties in Africa. TSX listed, GoviEx’s principal objective is to become a significant uranium producer through the continued exploration and development of its mine-permitted projects in Niger, Zambia and Mali. We discuss Daniel’s mining career and how he had some time in the banking and finance industry, gaining and learning new skills that helped him in more senior roles, before moving onto the subject of Uranium, the supply and demand of this commodity, and how it will affect the industry and world moving forward. KEY TAKEAWAYS GoviEx are currently seeing huge growth in the uranium market. Nuclear demand is growing by the day, increasingly so as people get behind green deals and come to the realisation that the cleanest way of producing energy is nuclear. Wind and solar energy farms require seventeen times more material to build than nuclear facilities. As plants spread across the globe, so too does demand for uranium. Daniel began in Camborne mines, and went from there to mines in South Africa and the Transvaal. Self-employment followed, and subsequent projects work for mines, and then part of HSBC’s mining analyst team. Having worked on so many different commodities, Daniel has come to realise that there are numerous similarities between most mining products. They all require the same basic processing and procedures. The main differences are the value additions that come later. The best CEOs of mining corporations tend to come from a financial background, which allows them to see both sides of the mining business - the practical side and the monetary side. Daniel prefers his team on the ground to take ownership of any projects they have to negotiate for. Many companies, especially those of a multi-national standing, allow their projects to be overseen remotely, but Daniel prefers his mines to be overseen locally. China are currently building eight reactors a year. The demand for nuclear energy is on the rise. Ep 29Digging Even Deeper With CEO & Executive Chairman of Eco Metals Recovery; Richard Verkley

“Changing the way the world mines” Rob interviews Richard Verkley, CEO & Executive Chairman of Eco Metals Recovery, a new green mining equipment manufacturing business entering the global gold mining market with a unique metals recovery system called the "Separator". Richard talks about what the company are doing in the industry and about Karuschain, a type of blockchain that aims to transform the supply chain within mining. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eco Metals Recovery was “born in the jungles of Ecuador”, and was sparked by the notion of removing poisons from a river. From a conversation between Richard and another engineer, they began to wonder if they could use the same practice to separate precious metals from minerals, but the technology wasn’t quite ready. The answer to this conundrum was found in the use of aerospace polymers, which were able to bypass such outdated practices as centrifugal separation, in order to better ensure that metals and minerals could be separated early in the process. The Separator is more durable than other mining equipment, and due to its innovative design, can be snapped together like a Lego set, allowing for a level of transportability hitherto unseen in this type of machinery. By building a varied team from different sectors in the mining industry, Richard has managed to assemble an experienced team, each with their own unique gifts, and who are instantly recognised as one of the most respected teams in mining, which stands them in good stead when it comes to approaching governments and other mining groups. A blockchain is something that pulls together a series of transactions between a number of parties. Richard has used the blockchain method to develop Karuschain, an equally linked system of operations designed to transform the supply chain within mining. Karuschain is described by Richard as a utility that runs imaginary wires all the way through the mining process to the end customer, recording every transaction along the way so that each customer can trace the origin and cleanliness, as well as the progress along the way. Eco Metals’ vision for the future is not one thing, but an array of different technologies and advancements designed to push the mining industry forward. Through innovative creations such as the Karus utilities and the Separator, Eco Metals hope to put their stamp on the mining industry as a whole. BEST MOMENTS “Pretty much everything we’re doing is eight hundred years old” “You could backpack, with three people, a version of this into extremely difficult terrain” “I want to change how we mine. I want to change what we’re doing to the environment” “I love the statistic that 70% of all gold is mined in Switzerland” “What we’re doing is re-wiring the world” “What do I do next, and how do I do something that makes a difference?” VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunesEco Metals Recovery ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 28An Interview With United Mining Services; C.O.O. Murray MacNab& Executive James Keir

Rob talks to Murray MacNab, the COO of United Mining Services (UMS) and James Keir, the Group Executive Manager for Engineering Technical Services at UMS Group Of Companies. UMS is an internationally recognised group of companies offering technical, advisory and contracting services to the mining industry, specialising in shaft-sinking and underground mining. James and Murray join Rob on this episode to offer their insights into what has made UMS such a success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Both Murray and James have extensive experience in the mining industry, and are currently part of a tour-de-force operation at UMS, lending their considerable knowledge to improving and expanding its specialised operations. UMS was founded in response to a growing need for a single source of accountability, or as James puts it a “one stop shop” for mining services. As such, UMS is divided into three divisions: processing, mining and shaft-sinking. UMS are looking to expand globally, with focus on the East, the Americas, and a wider expansion into Africa, which UMS considers its “backyard”. UMS continues to grow and evolve as it stakes new claims in new territories. by partnering with local operations, as well as breaking ground on new project types, UMS continues to grow its own skill-sets and partner relations. Murray identifies positive and negative changes in the art of shaft-sinking over the past few decades. Safety has improved exponentially. Productivity has dropped drastically, though, mainly due to the added safety measures. Remote control and robotics are the technologies that Murray and James identify as being the next big advances in shaft-sinking. Thirty years ago Murray was involved with a crew of 600 people in order to sink a shaft, but due to technological advances, can now sink shafts with a crew of just 50. With limited competition in the sector, UMS are looking to expand their technological capabilities so as to remain on the cutting edge, and to partner with more companies in order to stimulate growth. Talent acquisition is also of paramount importance so as to ensure the future of mining as an industry. BEST MOMENTS “With our three divisions, we can offer a concept-to-closure value chain with single-point accountability to mining clients” “We’re more than happy to go into partnerships, as we see them as adding huge value to our company” “Safety has become the number one driving issue these days” “Shaft-sinking is not considered to be a sexy industry” “It’s all about looking at the system as a whole” “Wherever there are minerals that people want, there will always be mining” VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunesUMS MiningMurray MacNab – LinkedInJames Keir - LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 26A Conversation With Kevin Sabin of Hargreaves Services

Rob talks to Kevin Sabin, the Director of Hargreaves Services, a diversified group of companies delivering services to the industrial, mining and property sectors. Kevin heads up their mining division and goes into what exactly Hargreaves offer in terms of services, as well as what makes them unique in their field. Through associations with important initiatives such as the Sirius Minerals project, Hargreaves Services have grown into a valued and trusted part of the worldwide mining industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kevin began in the mining industry in 1975 as an apprentice electrician and has worked extensively through mines in the north of England. Since his association with Hargreaves Services, the company has grown throughout the worldwide mining supply chain providing end-to-end solutions through their various divisions. Through their wide experience of mining, logistics and research, Hargreaves have grown into the largest surface mine operator in the UK, handling processing and operating their own transport fleet. Health and safety is something that Hargreaves particularly believe and specialise in. Maltby Colliery, owned and operated by Hargreaves was the first mine in the world to be awarded the British Safety Council’s Sword Of Honour. Hargreaves have found that lately, there seem to be more and more mining opportunities in the UK, which is resurgent. Fundamentally, Kevin believes that having competent people in place is far more valuable than having numerous people in place. It’s also about making sure that the people you have in place are trained in not just the methods and qualifications of yesteryear, but also in today’s standards. Kevin believes that even though some from the last generation of UK mining may now not be in a position to take up their former positions, they can still provide valuable and essential training to the new generation of UK miners, and hopes to utilise this past generation’s considerable knowledge in improving UK mining today. Steep-seam geology, and the difficulties it presents have forced Kevin and his team to use more radical thinking in terms of success. He has found that methods used in the UK mines have not translated throughout the world. However, each challenge is an opportunity for growth, and Hargreaves learn from every obstacle placed in their path. In terms of future growth, Hargreaves hopes to diversify their output from products like coal, which has seen its demand slowly decline, to future industries such as biomass processing, and services such as installation, maintenance and operations. .BEST MOMENTS “While a lot of our experience has been in coal, it certainly transfers into other minerals” “We really have put a lot of effort into making sure we do the best for the mine and for the services we provide” “For us it’s about collaboration, looking right across the patch” “How can we knit all of these opportunities and people together?” “One of the biggest challenges in the mining industry is the ageing mining population in the UK” “There are lots of willing people out there who want to become a part of the mining industry” VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunesHargreaves Services ABOUT THE GUEST As Director of Hargreaves Services, Kevin Sabin heads up their mining division and explains what services the company offers and what makes them unique. Ep 25From Exploration To Production; With Malcolm Paterson C.E.O. of Greengold Engineering

Malcolm Paterson, CEO & Director of Greengold Engineering joins Rob to talk about his mineral project development and production company based in Indonesia, who specialises in developing innovative technologies to reduce costs and improve recovery in the processing of minerals. Malcolm gives his invaluable insights into the new technologies he is developing for his many clients, along with how they can add value and save capital with their processing facilities. KEY TAKEAWAYS Malcom and Greengold are hoping to change their name and image soon, from Greengold Engineering to Greengold Technology. This is being done to ensure that people know that their true focus is on mining technology going forward. Greengold covers many disciplines and can take a project through from exploration to production. Exploration, drilling, geology, mining, processing and engineering are just some of the areas in which Greengold specialise. Greengold focus only on gold, silver and copper. This narrow focus has allowed Greengold to develop highly acute technologies across many disciplines, instead of spreading themselves far too thin. By working with suppliers closely, Greengold has managed to shorten the process quite often when it comes to developing a project. Developing on an international basis is crucial to Greengold’s plans. By taking the best of one country’s resources and transplanting them to different areas of the globe, Greengold is establishing itself as an efficient and knowledgeable player in mining. The integration of geology and process is of the utmost importance. By providing a complete end-to-end process for their clients, and by specialising in just a few areas, Greengold have marked out their unique appeal. Greengold believes that mining companies should be more self-supporting than they currently are. Whether they are drilling or mining, companies can always benefit by bringing their operation in-house. It saves a huge amount of money, and can lead to a wider field of expertise. BEST MOMENTS ‘We don’t try to be a specialist in every field’ ‘Too many startups try to focus on too many disciplines at once’ ‘We can develop a project from start to finish with no gaps’ ‘We have Indonesian geologists working in Australia, which is quite novel...’ ‘If the metallurgist doesn’t understand what’s in the ground, then the engineer can’t design a good plan’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Dig Deep Mining PodcastGreengold Engineering ABOUT THE HOSTRob Tyson Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 24Mark Dawe of B2 Gold Namibia, Combining Passion with Social Responsibility

The aspect of social investment and environmental investment in the planet is not debatable, it should be a part of every bankable feasibility study, this is especially important in developing countries’ Rob is in conversation with Mark Dawe Managing Director of B2 Gold Namibia. They discuss the corporate social responsibility central to the operating philosophy of the company and giving back to the community, country and the planet. This interview is a fascinating insight into the role the company plays in developing a passionate and positive workforce who are doing great things, adding value and giving back, listen in to hear more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mark Dawe has worked in Namibia for more than 26 years and has extensive experience working with the government both as a managing director and as former president of the Namibia Chamber of Mines. We are focused not only on adding value but also on corporate social responsibility we believe we are investing in a country and this is central to our operating philosophy from the CEO down to the individual mines in each country. B2 Gold is very focused on upskilling making sure the local population is trained so that the operation can be run by a local workforce from management through to site staff. The policy of skills transfer has been very successful because we are upskilling individuals who can then be deployed across various roles in differing locations. There is a fantastic synergy between a country that is very liberal, Canada the parent company of our company, and developing countries ; developing skills transfer, education, assisting people and leaving a legacy. Namibia is a very friendly country and It’s a pleasure to live here. The government is very receptive to mining but there are challenges around licences and resource rent through claim sitting. The minerals and metals mined in Namibia are extremely diverse and the country has the best skill set of any African country. When you come here to live you want to stay and this is hugely attractive for mining operators as its hugely beneficial to not have your workforce flying in and out, with the associated costs and fosters ownership and commitment. If you surround yourself with passionate people you find you are in a very positive situation with people doing great things and adding value to community, country and planet. B2 Gold is very involved in conservation, setting up the Namibia Chamber of Environment. This has become the ‘one stop shop’ for the conservation and environmental sector. Although the effective recycling of minerals and metals and other materials is developing There will always be a need for resources from the ground and the natural resources sector will in the future become more dependent on technology and more efficient mining techniques. BEST MOMENTS ‘I see a bright future for mining, it’s still a very good profession to be entering’ ‘I can see myself moving more into conservation and living in Africa I believe we have a unique responsibility’ ‘Ultimately you can make a success of whatever you do as long as you are passionate about what you are doing’ ‘Technically there is nothing better, you have every profession under the sun in a mine’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Dig Deep Mining Podcast ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry.
