Ep 174Up to Date Advice for Both Graduates and Mining Firms with Richard Murrell
In this episode, we chat to Richard Murrell who is the site director at Anglo American on the Woodsmith mine here in the UK. Having studied at the Camborne School of mine and worked both here in the UK and in Australia, Richard has a passion and desire to help the younger generation and graduates in the mining industry. He is coming onto the podcast to give some advice to graduates in their early years. But also, to advise managers and more senior mining professionals in hiring young engineers for their business and operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Don´t send a generic letter. Do your homework, send it to the right person and make it specific. Be sure to follow up on the emails or letters you send. Research is essential. The more you know about a company and its projects the better. Networking is vital. Many, many people have found jobs at networking events. Being on the tools underground may not be what you want to do forever, but it’s still very good experience. When at university seek out jobs that teach you related skills. For example, work on a building site instead of in a cafe. Build up your own skills, don´t expect your company to always pay for training. The industry has to be proactive about selling mining as a career to stand any chance of filling the skill gap. People need to be made aware that mining can be done in an environmentally friendly way. Many people just assume that a mining career means having to move abroad. Increasingly, that is not the case. The industry needs to make that clearer. The UK mining industry is buoyant, environmentally friendly and has a bright future. Apprenticeships are vital to the industry. Get children building as soon as possible. Technical Lego or Meccano are great. Teach your children about fossils, geology, and visit quarries and engineered facilities. BEST MOMENTS ‘Keep sending those emails off, keep approaching, but also keep following up. ´ ‘If you can start at the bottom maybe as a nipper or a truck driver underground it´s invaluable experience.’ ‘There are around 2000 mines and quarries operating in the UK.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: Re-imagining mining to improve people's lives | Anglo American LinkedIn: Richard Murrell - Site Director - Anglo American | LinkedIn Email: [email protected] Lego Caterpillar D11 Bulldozer set - https://brickset.com/article/63317/first-look-at-42131-cat-d11-bulldozer VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 173How Mining Companies are Using the Voluntary Carbon Market with Matthew Laustrup
In this episode, we chat with Matthew Laustrup. He is the sales manager for First Climate, a leading service provider of carbon emissions, supporting private and public sector organizations in achieving their climate and sustainability objectives. Matthew discusses how they can help mining companies with their carbon and green energy agendas. This is going to play a major part in mining companies’ future strategies over the coming years. So, now is the time to prepare if you are not already doing so. KEY TAKEAWAYS Last year, the voluntary carbon market retired or transacted just over 100 million tonnes of carbon. First Climate alone was involved in retiring or transacting 10 million tonnes of that. Reducing and offsetting carbon emissions is not something that can wait. There are two types of carbon markets. Matthew explains what they are. Now that renewable energies are economically viable, there is no need for the carbon market to support those. Using carbon neutral products is gaining ground, including in the mining sector. Many mining companies are working hard to neutralise their carbon and making huge changes to do it. Building facilities with eco-friendly materials make a big difference. In the podcast, Matthew shares some examples. Avoiding emissions is essential. Matthew shares several ways to do this throughout the episode. The different types of carbon credits and the cost of them is discussed. Using a verified carbon project is essential, several good options are talked about in the podcast. It is important to bear in mind that some projects take years to neutralise carbon. BEST MOMENTS ‘First Carbon is involved in around 150 projects, throughout the world. ´ ‘The voluntary market needs to scale up to 1 billion tonnes to have an impact on global emissions.’ ‘You need to be in for the long haul if you are developing your own projects.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.firstclimate.com/en/meet-the-team/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/first-climate/ LinkedIn: Matthew Laustrup – Sales Manager - Carbon and Renewable Energy – First Climate AG | LinkedIn Email: [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 171Tap into New Cyanide Monitoring Technology to Extract More and Reduce Costs with Benedikt Kirchgaessler
In this episode, we chat with Benedikt Kirchgaessler who is the CEO and founder of CyanoGuard. A company that manufactures and provides the best solution for safe and efficient cyanide monitoring and management within the mining industry. Their mission is to minimize toxic reagent usage, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve precious metal recoveries for gold mines by providing a reliable, user-friendly, and intelligent real-time cyanide monitoring and optimization solution. Benedikt has a background in biochemistry and biotechnology as well as the founder of CyanoGuard. He talks about the company and how gold mining companies can benefit from their product in the processing of gold. KEY TAKEAWAYS Better monitoring leads to better control. Only when you have accurate timely data can you make the right decisions. Proper cyanide monitoring greatly improves the efficiency of the gold recovery process. By about 2 or 3%. The amount of chemicals used can also be reduced by up to 20%. How much a mine saves depends on its size. But between 2 to 10 million dollars per year is not unusual. Safety is also improved. There is only a finite supply of metals, so to meet demand the industry has to become more efficient. Installation is fast and easy to scale. How mining companies embrace technology is set to play a major role in how successful they are. Their sonic monitoring solutions can be adapted to suit the needs of any type of mine. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is a lot of technology out there that is used in other areas that can help mines to become more sustainable and safer. ´ ‘Our solutions really make an impact.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.cyanoguard.com/ Request a demo: https://www.cyanoguard.com/request-demo LinkedIn: CyanoGuard AG | LinkedIn Twitter: CyanoGuard AG (@CyanoGuard) / Twitter Call; +41 44 505 1001 or +61 8 7711 3317 or +511 700 3314 Email: [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 170Producing the Metals the UK Needs for the Green Revolution in the UK - Interview with Brett Grist
In this episode, we chat with Brett Grist, the Exploration Manager of Cornwall Resources who are focusing on the Redmoor Tin/Tungsten/Copper mining project located in eastern Cornwall, SW of England. The company is owned by AIM-listed Strategic Minerals PLC. Brett has a background as a Geologist. He has more than 20 years of experience in exploration and mining project development. Playing a leading role in projects across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Including taking projects from early exploration through feasibility and into development. He also co-chairs the UK mining group of the Critical Minerals Association. Brett shares his career and overcoming a tragedy by developing leukaemia to now leading the way in putting Cornwall on the mining map. He explains the developments they are making with Cornwall Resources. How they are forging partnerships with Camborne School of Mines. At a time when government assistance is slowly coming to fruition. These are exciting times for the Cornwall region and perhaps the rest of the UK when it comes to the mining industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS The idea that Cornwall has been all mined out is most definitely not correct. Cornwall Resources is looking mainly for tungsten and copper. Quite a lot of discovery work was done in the mid-80s, but a drop in prices stopped the deposits from being mined. Cornwall Resources is gathering and creating mining data in digital formats. Cornwall is one of the heavily mined areas. Yet, it is also one of the most under-explored areas. There is the potential for the UK to home produce the metals they need for the green revolution. It is time for companies to come together and lobby the government, so they understand the opportunity and make things easier. The UK has plenty of people with the right exploration and mining skills. Working out who has the mineral rights in the UK is still quite a fragmented process, which can be time-consuming. We still need to educate the public about how vital mining is to society. Work with the community to find solutions. For example, putting a straw bale wall up solve their drill rig noise issue. BEST MOMENTS ‘You adapt, work out how to do it and find good people to work with. ´ ‘Many people say “Cornwall, it´s all been mined out hasn´t it” Well, that´s not the case.’ ‘In Cornwall, the planning authorities are generally supportive.’ ‘Modern mining is a different thing. We need to get that message out.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.cornwallresources.com LinkedIn: Brett Grist - Exploration Manager - Cornwall Resources Limited | LinkedIn Email: [email protected] https://www.anthonynolan.org/ VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 169How Inflatable Packers are Transforming the Mining Industry with Clem Rowe
In this episode, we chat to Clem Rowe, Managing Director at IPI Packers who are a leading designer and manufacturer of down-hole products with distinctly different inflatable packer technology. These inflatable packers can be used in mining for rock burst mitigation, block caving hydro-fracture, remote or deep permeability testing, rock-stress testing and also custom-made solutions to fit your requirements. Clem has over 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of inflatable packers and discusses how their products are used and can benefit the mining industry in a variety of ways. KEY TAKEAWAYS The best way to think of an inflatable packer is as a balloon on a stick, that can be inserted into a hole and inflated. Inflatable packers are an especially flexible, strong, durable, and often easy to deploy form of packing. Permeability testing is one of the largest uses of inflatable packers within the mining industry. They can also be used for pre-conditioning. Inflatable packers are also a good fit for solution mining. During the podcast, Clem explains the benefits of their innovative Standard Wireline Packer System (SWiPS®). IPI´s unique software package enables them to predict what will happen when their system is applied and plan accordingly. Even with CoVid, IPI Packers turnover has doubled. They are continuing to expand fast with new facilities opening across the globe. BEST MOMENTS ‘We´re doing our best to prove that our inflatable packers are the best high-performance choice in all applications. ´ ‘It uses water to inflate the backhoe instead of gas.’ ‘Every product we produce is in some way an innovation.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.inflatable-packers.com/IPI/index LinkedIn: IPI Packers | LinkedIn Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/IPI-Packers-546485666271740/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ipipackers VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 168Understanding Native Title and Handling It Correctly with Ric Davies
In this episode, we chat with Ric Davies, a specialist and expert in native title within the mining industry. He has a wealth of experience spanning over 20 years. Ric understands native title at State and at Federal level. He covers everything including exploration, mining, infrastructure, and has particular expertise in Aboriginal Land. Ric prides himself on taking a can-do, common-sense approach to cooperative development. During the podcast, he provides a wider understanding of native titles. Including common issues and how to best overcome these challenges. Giving you some hints and tips, you can use to successfully negotiate these agreements. An insightful episode where the common theme seems to be building relationships with landowners. KEY TAKEAWAYS The mining on native lands landscape has changed hugely in the past 20 years. Many mining companies are negative about native title, despite the fact that its existence also generates opportunities. Heritage surveys offer benefits. They uncover all kinds of new information and artefacts. Usually, once you get face to face and build a relationship you can solve any issues. Don’t be scared of the process. Following it takes time, but it works. There is a huge need for people with a proper understanding of mining and native titles to work in the industry. Each indigenous group is different. Even in the same country, you will need to adapt your approach in each area. Interacting with the community early is essential. As is regularly updating them. Not being truthful backfires. The destruction of the Juukan cave heritage site is bound to lead to drastic change. Indigenous groups are now better organised. They are taking the initiative and commercialising their rights, taking on the role of partners. More indigenous people are working in the mining industry, and they are starting to take on more senior roles. The mining industry will adapt. It has always evolved and will do so in this case. BEST MOMENTS ‘Negotiations were driven by lawyers, who knew everything about the law but knew nothing about mining. ´ ‘Groups will judge you on things, not words… get out there and talk to people.’ ‘I think there are going to be big changes coming.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: http://www.daviesanddavies.com.au/ LinkedIn: https://au.linkedin.com/in/ric-davies-6b539468 Email: [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 167Ways To Get Into The Commodity Bull Market - Interview With Steve Penny
In this episode, we chat to Steve Penny again who appeared in Episode 124 back in March this year. You may want to listen to that episode as well, after listening to this. Steve is a full-time commodity investor specialising predominately in precious metals and uranium stocks. Someone Rob has been personally following since last year. He is a paid member of his newsletter “The Silverchartlist” where he shares useful tips on investing. Where Steve shows the actual trades he is making in real-time. As well as updating his subscribers on current market trends across a handful of commodities. He writes two newsletters. One is free, the other has a very low cost paid newsletter. They are both invaluable and provide an insight into a basket of selected mining stocks. In them, he provides commentary on what these stocks are doing. He gives us an update on the precious metals and Uranium market but more importantly, also educate us on investing in mining stocks. Rob started investing late last year and certainly understands a lot more about commodity investing. He is sure he will do well as we enter a commodities bull-market over the coming years. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the right guidance, it is possible to invest successfully in commodities even if you are not involved in the mining industry Recently the market fell back a bit, this is helping to adjust things to better reflect reality A lower market makes it easier for new investors to get involved Silver and gold always thrive when governments are indebted. Steve explains how that works, in the podcast. Uranium is particularly interesting because of what is happening to nuclear power. Battery metals have a lot of potential. Steve talks about some of them in more detail during the podcast. Commodities have never been so cheap relative to other investment vehicles. When it comes to commodity investing, there is nothing wrong with using an ETF to get started. Steve´s free newsletter is a good way to build your knowledge of the commodities market or get started as an investor. BEST MOMENTS ‘It also gives new participants the opportunity to begin to accumulate positions. ´ ‘Commodities have never been so cheap relative to general equities and real estate.’ ‘You want to accumulate before the big pop. Because when it goes, they will go fast.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Click here to subscribe to his free newsletter to see what he is doing: https://lddy.no/10e6q VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 166An Update on the State of Gold - Interview with Krishan Gopaul of the World Gold Council
In today´s episode, we have a returning guest, Krishan Gopaul who is the Market Intelligence Manager at the World Gold Council. He talks about the Gold Demand Trends quarterly report for Q1 2021, and what’s been happening in the world of gold over the last few months. He briefly talks about the history of gold and why it’s been valued throughout history. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is still a strengthening demand for gold. This is the case for gold coins and jewellery too. Central banks are continuing to buy gold. Including some that have not bought much over the past few years. Krishan explains why that is during the podcast. Interest rates have played a huge role in driving gold investment, especially for private investors. Fear of inflation is playing a role. Gold is still a popular hedging product. Mine production is continuing to recover from the CoVid crisis. Gold recycling is helping to balance the market and stop demand from outstripping supply too much. Greater job creation and higher wages are set to further boost the gold jewellery sector. Gold has worked as a currency since 500 BC. In some parts of the world, it is still used as an unofficial currency. Since the 2000s new gold markets have emerged e.g., small consumers in China. Gold is unlikely to see its reputation change anytime soon. It is seen as a source of safety as well as returns. BEST MOMENTS “Interest rates have played a huge role in driving gold investment. ´ ’The market has shifted to a much more balanced picture, not so heavily weighted towards jewellery.’ ‘500/600 BC is when we started to see gold coinage.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Krishan Gopaul - https://www.gold.org/goldhub/research/our-research-team/krishan-gopaul Twitter - https://twitter.com/goldcouncil Website - https://www.gold.org/ VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 165Fast Progress in Cameroon´s Frontier and Senegal - Interview with Tim Livesey of Oriole Resources
In this interview, Rob chats to Tim Livesey, Director and Group CEO of Oriole Resources. They are an AIM-listed exploration company, operating in Africa and Europe. Focusing on early-stage gold exploration in Cameroon and the more advanced Senala gold project in Senegal. Tim, who is a geologist by trade, has a wealth of experience in early-stage exploration and development. They talk about the exciting opportunities and scope of potential there is in Cameroon with Oriole acquiring several licenses in the country. KEY TAKEAWAYS Oriole has been focusing on new frontiers, primarily in Cameroon. As well as extracting maximum value from their existing Senegal assets. Cameroon is an area that has not been explored much, despite the geology being well placed for multiple commodities. Licences are readily available in Cameroon. The authorities have done a good job of making licensing, financing, and geological data more easily available. Other mining firms are setting up in Cameroon too and there are plenty of opportunities for everyone. Oriole operates dynamically and quickly. Their cash flow is currently very good. In all 4 Cameroon drilling sites, they have identified strong potential for organic gold. Trenching is also taking place in other areas of Cameroon. It is are a technology/investment company that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to significantly improve mineral exploration targeting on both a regional and local scale. Denis is a geologist by background and has worked on three different continents, Canada, Norway, and Ghana during his career. He has a range of experience working on advanced mine operations, start-up mine management, grassroots exploration, and financing and acquisitions. Now he is bringing machine learning to the resources sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS Increasingly, mineral explores are using big data and machine learning to accelerate exploration. Goldspot´s focus is on reducing risk. Getting more out of the data you have is a big part of doing this. Their team consists of many specialised individuals that also have expertise in sub-disciplines for example geology or geophysics. They employ data scientists as well as geoscientists. Currently, the accuracy of the data they are given initially is not adequate. So, there is always an element of additional research necessary. The fact that, over the decades, geologists have used different names for the same rock means core samples need to be relogged to be useful. Goldspot has developed Litho Lens to speed up core relogging. It uses historic core photos. Data needs to be accurate. In the podcast, Denis shares several examples of how the flaws with the data can be recognised and how it can be cleaned up. Sometimes it is possible to use data from a neighbouring project to learn more about your asset. Goldspot is starting to offer its AI tools and software to individual companies so they can use them to speed up their exploration. BEST MOMENTS ‘With any particular mining project, the data sets are different, the problems that need solving are different. ´ ‘It's about that front end work, standardization, homogenization and cleaning up the data.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Email: [email protected] Denis Laviolette LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/denis-laviolette-928a30a7 Website: https://goldspot.ca/ LinkedIn: GoldSpot Discoveries Corp. | LinkedIn Twitter: https://twitter.com/goldspotd?lang=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/GoldSpot-Discoveries-Corp VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 157The Future of Tungsten and Tin Mining in Southwest UK with Max Denning
In this episode, we chat to Max Denning, CEO & Director at Tungsten West who are restarting the World Class Hemerdon Tungsten-Tin Deposit located in South Devon, UK. They were incorporated in 2019 as a special purpose vehicle to purchase the Hemerdon Project out of receivership. Max has over 10 years of experience in the mining sector mainly in commercial & finance, management consultancy and project delivery. He was previously GM Commercial & Finance of Pan African Minerals and now is in the hot seat at Tungsten West. In the podcast, he explains how things have moved forward since the operation was taken over from Wolf Minerals. They are looking to list on the AIM soon, so we discuss this plus why they decided to take on this exciting but challenging world-class operation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Demand for tungsten and tin is growing. For many applications, e.g., wind turbines there is no viable alternative to tungsten. Taking a slightly different approach to the production of the tungsten and tin is part of the reason this formerly unprofitable asset is now viable again. The plant has been updated. Using new technology will produce significant yield increases. The ore will be pre concentrated before sending it for processing. That means much higher yields. Tungsten West is now working more closely with the local community and, so far, have had a good response. The source of the noise issue that was a big problem for the community and former owners has been identified. Fortunately, there are several viable ways to solve that issue. The expectation is to be in full production at Hemerdon in 2022. Tungsten West is exploring other opportunities in the Southwest of the UK. BEST MOMENTS ‘We have strong contacts. Specifically, in metallurgy, people who have a strong focus on Tungsten. ´ ‘Now that the plant is in care and maintenance, we have been able to go in there and make the fundamental changes that are required.’ ‘Tungsten is an enabling metal. Ep 156The Opportunity that Uranium Offers Investors with James Sykes
In this episode, we chat to James Sykes, who is CEO and Director of Baselode Energy, a fully funded Uranium exploration company that has achieved resounding success within the region. For example, holding a portfolio of highly prospective uranium exploration properties in the eastern side of the Athabasca Basin. James has over 10 years of experience in uranium exploration and discovery in the Athabasca Basin. His experience has also enabled him to lead the technical team for NexGen Energy, to make the Arrow discovery during the first 3 drill campaigns - the largest development-stage uranium deposit in Canada. James, a geologist by trade discusses his 1.0 and 2.0 thesis models around uranium exploration. As well as what he and the company are looking to achieve in the uranium space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Baselode Energy is only a year old, but the team has decades of experience and success when it comes to Uranium exploration. They are fully funded. The Uranium market has not been this hot for about 15 years now. Uranium has always been important for green energy. But there is stigma surrounding its use. This perception is changing. We have more nuclear reactors now than we did 20 years ago. The supply of uranium has not kept pace. In fact, mines have closed, so the conditions are right for the price to climb. Baselode Energy is looking in areas where glaciers have removed surface rocks to great depths so that they do not have to dig too far. James and his team have tapped into new aerial scanning techniques to help them to identify the most promising areas. The world´s use of electricity is increasing steeply. China, India, and Russia are all building new reactors and increasing the capacity of their existing ones. Baselode Energy has the lowest number of shares of their peers meaning that when the price goes up investors really feel the benefit. Supply of Uranium is going to be tight for a while. Open-pit uranium mines take circa 8 years to come on stream, underground typically it takes decades. Baselode has 3 areas, which they are exploring at speed. They are scheduled to start drilling this year on 2 of their sites and the other one in 2022. BEST MOMENTS ‘We are looking for high-grade uranium because we know that is what makes the deposits tick. ´ ‘and nuclear has again been touted as being green. But we´ve got to get over that fear hurdle.’ ‘It is not a question of if uranium will come back, it is a question of when uranium comes back.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Email: [email protected] Email: [email protected] LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/company/baselode-energy Twitter: https://twitter.com/BaselodeE Website: https://baselode.com VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. They are listed on both the NY and London Stock Exchanges under the symbol (CMCL) Steve is an accountant by background with over 30 years of experience. He has been in the mining industry for over 15 years and has been the head of the company since 2014. We talk about the increased Mineral Resource and Mineral Reverses at the Blanket Mine and their big infrastructure project, Central Shaft which is now in operation. We also discuss mining in Zimbabwe and how they navigated their way through the turmoil that the country has experienced over the past decade. KEY TAKEAWAYS Steve´s accounting background has helped Caledonia Mining to navigate hyperinflation and a lack of foreign currency. He explains how in the podcast. The government is putting in place dollar retention schemes to help exporters, which will make the country more attractive for mining investment. Caledonia Mining Corp is Jersey registered, which is beneficial to shareholders. From a geological point of view, Zimbabwe is a great location which is one of the main reasons they are expanding there. Drilling and exploration of their other sites are ongoing. The plan is to stay in gold and to become a far larger producer. Investing in infrastructure has enabled them to mine deeper and across far more faces. Blanket mine still has plenty of reserves to exploit. Zimbabwe has a great workforce and investors are very welcome there. The infrastructure, roads etc. are still in good condition. Investing in solar is solving the power constraint issue and reducing the environmental impact their mining operation has. At this time, the economics of storing excess power in batteries is not right. But, they are working to address that issue. The Blanket mine is self-financing. Blanket mine staff and the community are both shareholders. BEST MOMENTS ‘A company´s cash flow statement is its most meaningful statement. ´ ‘Our intention has always been to reward shareholders with a good dividend stream.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.caledoniamining.com/ Email: [email protected] Twitter: https://twitter.com/caledoniamining VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 154Why Small-scale Gold Mining in Brazil Makes Financial Sense with Mike Hodgson, CEO of Serabi Gold
In this episode, we chat with Mike Hodgson, CEO of Serabi Gold. An exploration and production company involved in the evaluation and development of gold deposits in Brazil. Mike is a geologist by background and has worked across Europe and South America. Working for the likes of ACA Howe International Ltd, Rio Tinto and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd. His expertise is in narrow vein underground mining operations. He is here today to talk about Serabi gold, their recent acquisition and plans for development and exploration for Coringa, mining in Brazil and how to overcome negativity over the recent tailings issues in Brazil. KEY TAKEAWAYS Small underground mining is challenging. It is all about quality, not quantity. Done right it is highly viable. Bringing Coringa on stream is creating the critical mass that Serabi Gold needs. Serabi Gold is investing in exploration around Polita. Coringa is planning to start its first blast in July 2021. The results are good, so there is potential for 80,000, maybe more, ounces. Brazil consists of 26 states, each of which operates differently. The government is actively looking for companies to operate there. So, at the state level things move fast and setting up there is not that difficult. Currently, even tiny, dry tailing dams are having to meet the same standards as the huge and potentially dangerous dams that are always wet. Serabi Gold has $70 million in the bank, is robust, making money and the gold price is up too, which boosts profitability. BEST MOMENTS ‘Small is good, small is beautiful. It certainly works for us. ´ ‘You basically squeeze the water out of the tailings and actually have sand. Then you just stack it’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://www.serabigold.com/ Email: [email protected] Twitter: https://twitter.com/serabi_gold VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 153Streaming and Royalties Investments and Understanding the Carbon Market Opportunity with Anthony Milewski
In this episode, we chat with Anthony Milewski, Chairman of Nickel 28, an innovative battery metal focused investment vehicle. Nickel 28´s current main focus is on metal streaming and royalty agreements. They offer investors exposure to the metals that are integral to the key technologies that the electric vehicle and energy storage markets need. Anthony is an entrepreneur with a background in Finance and Law. So, apart from talking about Nickel 28, he discusses and informs us about carbon credits and carbon footprints. In particular, how its introduction into the mining industry is changing the way things are done. KEY TAKEAWAYS Get in early with metals and commodities. Understandably, demand for the metals that go into batteries is set to grow fast. With the streaming and royalty model, you have exposure to the commodity price but have no operating exposure. Diversifying across assets and jurisdictions has benefits. Royalty agreements secure investors a % of revenue. There are many different permutations to consider. Streaming is linked in some way to the physical commodity. Anthony explains in more detail, in the podcast. There are two markets for carbon (emissions markets). The regulated and the voluntary markets. The voluntary market is set to dwarf the regulated market. Anthony covers how the voluntary market in detail. ESG standards mean that most mining companies will be involved in the carbon market. Supply and demand dictate the price of carbon credits. The price of carbon keeps going up, which makes it a potentially good investment. Carbon will become an important feature of the balance sheet. Carbon footprint is set to become a significant part of any investor’s decision process. Anthony explains why the price of nickel is likely to rise. BEST MOMENTS ‘Try to invest in the metals and commodities early on. ´ ‘Carbon is going to become an important feature of the balance sheet.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Twitter - https://twitter.com/a_milewski VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 152Mechanised Tunnelling and Mining How One Industry is Influencing the Other with Diane Mather
In this episode, we chat with Diane Mather, who specialises in tunnelling. Apart from working for Inland Rail as the design manager, she is also the chair for the Australian Tunnelling Society. She has worked on multiple rail-related tunnelling projects as well as in several mining settings. Diane was introduced to us by Michael Moore having studied together at Camborne School of Mines. She studied for a Geology, Geotechnical, and Tunnelling degree. Diane is on the podcast to discuss all things tunnelling with an emphasis on mining and how they combine and interact. We talk about the main differences and similarities between tunnelling & mining. As well as what technologies and innovation mining and tunnelling have in common. Plus, much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS Diane has worked for numerous mines as well as on other types of tunnelling projects. Mining design is temporary compared to infrastructure tunnels. Mine structures are usually easier to build because there is no other infrastructure to work around e.g., sewers. Mechanised tunnel building is a lot faster than drill and blast. Some issues need to be overcome before the use of mechanised tunnelling machines becomes more common in the mining industry. Issues that are discussed in the podcast, Tunnelling is becoming more popular because it reduces the impact infrastructure has on the neighbourhood. Often tunnels are the only practical option in areas of high-density population. Many mining industry innovations have been adopted for tunnelling. Several examples are discussed in the podcast. Mines are increasingly using LIDAR and GIS systems to map and manage their projects. These tools also have a role in managing the relationship with the public. Mines are taking the lead in the use of autonomous vehicles. An approach tunnellers are starting to adopt. Automation is greatly reducing the risks for both industries. For miners transport of their products from the mine is a major issue. A possible solution is discussed. BEST MOMENTS ‘I fly in and out of some of the best mining and infrastructure projects in Australia. ´ ‘The instrumentation, monitoring and geological mapping that´s been used in mining have been implemented in tunnelling.’ ‘A mechanised tunnelling machine is a big, long lead time procurement item.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Diane Mather - QLD Chapter Chair - Australian Tunnelling Society | LinkedIn The Australian Tunnelling Association Website - https://www.ats.org.au/ Details of ATS committee members - https://www.ats.org.au/about-us/committee-members/ VALUABLE RESOURCES mailto:[email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ http://www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 151Finland – An Easy Place to Work That is Ripe for Exploration – Insights from James Withall
In this episode, we chat to James Withall, CEO of Rupert Resources who are a junior miner with advanced exploration and near-term production potential in Northern Finland James, a geologist by background has over 20 years of experience in mining. Working in the field and the investment space. We discuss his journey and how Rupert Resources has evolved. Talking about their Ikkari discovery, their Pahtavaara mine, and what potential Finland has as a mining jurisdiction. KEY TAKEAWAYS Rupert Resources is for the most part a mineral exploration company, but they now also working the assets they own. They bought their Northern Finland asset right at the bottom of the market. There is a lot of potential in Northern Finland. It is ripe for large-scale exploration Finland is an easy place to get to and travel around. There is plenty of 100% renewable energy available. Finnish workers work well and are very safety conscious. Finland is no more expensive to work in than places like Canada Being a small company allows you to move fast. There is no bureaucracy to hold you back. They have taken a fund manager approach and applied it to exploration. Rupert Resources' exploration results have been fantastic. They have just raised $48 million, so cash flow is not an issue. The geology of Finland is remarkably similar to West Africa, so the potential for finds is huge. The Ikkari discovery will be out to the market within the next 3 months. Rupert Resources now have new geological maps of their land, which is enabling them to do more focused exploration drills. They picked up another licence in the South, so will be exploring there too. BEST MOMENTS ‘There is a lot more potential in Northern Finland. ´ ‘Our job is to demonstrate the economic potential of whatever we find.’ ‘Finland just haven´t had that really intensive wave of modern commercial exploration.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website - https://rupertresources.com/ Rupert Resources | LinkedIn Twitter - https://twitter.com/RupertResources Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/rupertresources VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 150Why Ferro-Alloy Resources is Perfectly Placed to Ride the Vanadium Wave with Nick Bridgen
In this episode, we chat to Nick Bridgen, Chief Executive at Ferro-Alloy Resources, who is developing a giant vanadium deposit in southern Kazakhstan. Nick is a chartered accountant by background and also studied a degree in Psychology, Statistics, and Physics. His career has been in executive management within the resources industry. So, he is well versed in developing Ferro Alloy Resources to its full potential. Helped by the fact that he has worked in Kazakhstan for an extended period of time. We talk about the exisitng operations and the huge project they are developing. KEY TAKEAWAYS The firm is already profitable and well-funded but there is much, much more to come. 95% of their vanadium assets have not been touched yet. They have already secured all of the funding they need to develop the vanadium extraction side of their business. Ferro-Alloy Resources can extract their vanadium without a concentrator roaster. This means much lower capital and operation costs, which makes them highly competitive. The site already has power, roads, and a nearby workforce. They estimate that by spending about $100 million on phase 1 they will eventually turn over $2 billion across both phases. Vanadium is used to strengthen steel and demand is growing. Where weight is not important, vanadium flow batteries are an attractive proposition. Kazakhstan is now a well-run country, that has actively worked to make mining easier. The by-products the firm is planning to produce, and sell are expected to more than pay for the vanadium production costs. The firm´s small pilot plant has enabled them to develop the expertise they will need to extract the huge reserves of vanadium that they have. Their small pilot plant enabled them to discover that concentrate processing is also highly profitable. They are also currently upgrading and expanding their concentrates processing business. The feasibility study is due to be released in the first half of next year. BEST MOMENTS ‘That could increase the demand for vanadium by 50 or even 100%. ´ ‘We will be able to take advantage of the growth in demand of the world and supply it at a cost that doesn't kill that demand.’ ‘We are now fully funded.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website – http://www.ferro-alloy.com Email - [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 149Increasing Production Organically and Building for the Long Term with Ravi Sood
In this episode, we chat to Ravi Sood, Chairman of Galane Gold who is a gold producer and explorer with mining operations and exploration tenements in Botswana, South Africa, and the US. Ravi is an entrepreneur with many business interests. He tells us about Galane Gold, its future prospects, and some of the other interests that Ravi is pursuing with the mining and resources space. We also talk about macroeconomics and what is happening in today’s financial world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Gold is unique. Even in today´s digital world, it has a strong future. There is plenty of room in the industry for smaller operators. Mines that do not fit well into large companies’ profiles represent opportunities for other types of owners. Galane Gold likes to buy working mines that can be invested in and grown. Established mines come with strong working relationships and networks, which helps to get things done fast. There is usually also infrastructure already in place that can easily be upgraded. Transitioning their Botswana gold mine from open cast to underground has added decades of productive life to the asset. Galane Gold funds its own projects. The company is heavily insider-owned. Their key goal is to create value for the owners, so they take fewer risks. The economic situation we have now is mathematically intractable. The world cannot run the same playbook that got us out of trouble after WWII. Inflation will hurt a lot of people, but it is likely to be the way out of the current financial crisis. Precious metals and a few other assets tend to perform well in inflationary environments. Galane Gold´s current focus is ramping up production across their sites. They are also diversifying into solar and wind production. BEST MOMENTS ‘Gold has played its role for a very long time, and even in this digital future, it is going to continue to have a role. ´ ‘I think gold´s going higher and it is going to go there pretty quickly.’ ‘If you´re taking something on, make sure that it is worthwhile.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Ravi Sood - Chairman - Galane Gold Ltd. | LinkedIn Website – http://galanegold.com/ Email – [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 148Exploiting the Great Potential That WA Now Offers with Shaun Bunn of Empire Metals
In this episode, we chat to Shaun Bunn, Managing Director of Empire Metals who is an AIM-listed exploration and resource development company with a multi-commodity project portfolio comprising gold and copper interests in Australia, Georgia, and Austria. With a metallurgy background, Shaun has over 35 years of industry experience in technical and executive management positions working across many jurisdictions including Australia, Africa, and Europe and has recently taken up the hot seat with Empire Metals and will give us an overview of the company and its prospects. KEY TAKEAWAYS Empire Metals have just acquired the Central Menzies gold prospect. Over a million ounces have already been pulled from that area. Empire Metals has a particularly strong and experienced board. The explosion of mining in the WA area is beneficial has created additional issues. There are shortages of drilling rigs and skilled labour in Australia. Both challenges take time and planning to overcome. CoVid is still making the labour shortage harder to solve. The shortage of construction workers is a huge issue for those building new facilities. Empire Metals are planning to build up a portfolio of projects to extend their base and protect themselves from market changes. They are particularly looking at those projects that will generate cash flow. The project flow rate within the WA market is gathering momentum. New science and technologies are uncovering new deposits in old mining areas and making exploiting them viable. The plan is to exploit their current tenant base, which has huge potential, rather than overstretch themselves. That includes the Eclipse project. BEST MOMENTS ‘we've got a strong, well-balanced board. ´ ‘the shortage of construction workers is going to impact the mining industry.’ ‘there are large areas of Western Australia, particularly in the Eastern goldfields, that are under-explored.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Website: https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Empiremetalsltd Contact form - https://www.empiremetals.co.uk/contact/ Shaun Bunn LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/shaun-bunn-3a5b7829 VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. They are looking to develop the world's first carbon-neutral copper mine. Dan has a finance and resources background and worked for some leading financial institutions and mining companies during his career. He is now spearheading this exciting project with Foran Mining. We talk about the deposit at McIlvenna Bay and the uniqueness and potential it has. As well as the recent investment by Prem Watsa’s Fairfax Financial that they received. KEY TAKEAWAYS. Foran Mining has low-cost assets, that are rich in deposits which will continue to produce over the long term. The infrastructure needed to exploit the area was already in place, saving them a huge amount of money. Their current focus is building a carbon-neutral copper mine. They use hydropower, build using as many green products as possible, and use electric trucks. Their green approach has also produced economic benefits. Foran mining works to build up the economy of the areas in which they work. They subscribe to the circular economics principle. Investing in your people benefits the community and sets things up for future growth. The government in Canada is very switched on to the potential benefits of mining and doing so in a way that benefits everyone. The Bigstone deposit has copper and gold. As well as 7 metres of 27% zinc. The deposits at McIlvenna Bay typically appear in clusters. The area has copper, gold, silver, and zinc. The deposits start at about 30 meters, just below the dollar mark. They have intercepted about 14 meters of copper mineralization across the deposit. Foran Mining also has an exploration program in place that stretches into 2022. Wade Burton who is the Warren Buffet of Canada, has recently invested in Foran Mining. BEST MOMENTS ‘In Canada, I was optimising and managing our overall assets, as well as the trading business… Also looking for growth opportunities. ‘We want to make it as economical as possible and as sustainable as possible.’ ‘The future for Foran Mining is extremely bright.’ EPISODE RESOURCES LinkedIn - https://ca.linkedin.com/company/foran-mining Website – https://foranmining.com/ Email - [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 146The Multiple Growing Streams of Demand for Silver Explained by Michael DiRienzo
In this episode, we chat with Michael DiRienzo, Executive Director of The Silver Institute. A non-profit international association that draws its membership from across the breadth of the silver industry. Established in 1971, the Institute serves as the industry’s voice in increasing public understanding of the many uses and values of silver. Michael has been a long-standing member of the silver institute and talks about all things silver, trends, and the future of silver. KEY TAKEAWAYS Silver is an indispensable metal, with many important uses. The Silver Institute is involved in programmes that encourage more use of silver. As well as developing new products and markets. The Silver Institute provides reliable reports about the silver market. Including free ones and specialist information about specific sectors e.g., solar and the automotive industries. Silver production, supply, and demand all dipped because of the CoVid crisis. The photovoltaic market bucked the trend, with demand growing by 2% despite CoVid. Investment in silver also grew in 2020 and did so in double figures. For 2021, it should remain high. Demand for mined silver is set to grow and production is expected to increase by about 8%. The 2020 silver squeeze was triggered by social media. It helped to bring a fresh wave of new eyes to the silver investment market. Demand from the automotive, electronics, solar, silverware, and jewellery sectors all look set to be strong in 2021. The reopening of economies and accelerated vaccination in industrialized countries is a good thing for silver. Silver has an important role to play in decarbonisation. If something has an on/off switch, it almost certainly contains silver. The automation of vehicles represents a big opportunity for silver. Ep 145Interview with Chris Gerteisen of Nova Minerals
In this episode we chat to Chris Gerteisen, Executive Director and CEO of Nova Minerals, a minerals explorer and developer focused on gold and lithium projects in North America. These projects include Nova’s Estelle Gold Project in Alaska and the company’s majority-owned Snow Lakes Resources, which is a lithium project in Canada. Chris is a geologist by background, with 20 years of experience managing and advancing complex and challenging resource projects across North America, Australia, and Asia for the likes of Newmont, Oxiana, and Pan Aust so has a good pedigree behind him. We talk about the Korbel Main deposit at the Estelle Project as well as details of the drilling planned for Isabella, You Beauty, and Cathedral throughout the Korbel Valley. We chat about their lithium project as well as their stake in RotorX Aircraft company which is exciting. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a new Alaskan Gold Rush happening. Alaska is very pro-mining. So it is relatively easy to set up and run profitable mines there. Currently, all of Nova Mineral´s Alaskan mining claims are on state land, which makes permitting easier. They have 324 square kilometers of claims to explore, in a very productive area. Nova Minerals is a full year-round operator - despite Alaska´s inclement winters. As well as their producing mines they also have 15 other prospects that are at various stages of advancement. The use of XRT ore sorting and milling has enabled them to upgrade extraction by up to 10 times on some materials. Our resources are very undervalued compared to those of our peers, so there are some opportunities there. The lithium project has 11.1 million tonnes at 1% lithium. Using hydropower enables their Canadian operation to be a low carbon project. Interest in RotorX´s automated electronic-powered aircraft is growing fast. The development of their heavy lift drones is progressing well. As is their electric copter-based urban transport solution. Nova Minerals is just getting started. The best is yet to come. BEST MOMENTS ‘This belt is where the Alaskan Gold Rush has happened. ´ ‘Every 6 months we´ve increased the resource by a million ounces.’ ‘4.7 million ounces at Korbel alone, RPM coming online and advancing these other prospects…...’ GUEST RESOURCES Twitter - https://twitter.com/novaminerals Website - https://novaminerals.com.au/ Email – [email protected]/ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 144Interview with Hu Fleming – Water Management – Meeting the Challenges Now and in the Future
In this episode, we chat with Hu Fleming, an expert, and senior executive in water management. He was the head of water management for Anglo American. Here, he talks about all things water within the mining industry. We are going to cover water topics that are maybe not obvious to many in the industry. Things that you should be aware of when making everyday decisions. Water will become much scarcer as we move into a commodities super-cycle. So, this episode is a must-listen. Enabling you to learn how to help preserve as much water as possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hu has been working in the mining water treatment technology field for 40 years. Being involved in the extraction of all kinds of commodities. Water represents around 15% of the cost of mining. A figure that surprises most mining firms. Some mines have had to shut over water issues. Juniors and mid-tiers are increasingly being asked about water usage plans by would-be investors. Shareholders increasingly insist on the ethical use of water. Climate change is impacting the water supply. Supply levels can easily change drastically during the decades-long life of a mine. Water scarcity is the biggest challenge. Discharge issues are becoming increasingly important. Resource recovery is heavily dependent on water. Fortunately, new technologies and processes are helping to reduce this dependency. Water extraction of rare earths from coal waste is now possible and starting to look viable. Water permits are decreasing at a time when mining is expanding. Zero liquid discharge mines are possible. Mining companies need to be good neighbours and work with other associations/businesses to better manage the available water resources. Mines need to be good neighbours. If they are not, they get regulated to oblivion. BEST MOMENTS ‘Miners discovered a bit late that water was so significant to their overall financial sustainability. ´ ‘Shareholders have become very activist…they recognise that water generally is the largest flashpoint for communities.’ ‘Every mine should be able to reuse every cubic metre of water that they have.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 143Interview with Naheed Memon of Oracle Power – Gold and Coal Diversification
In this episode, we chat with Naheed Memon, CEO of Oracle Power who is an international natural resource project developer listed on London’s AIM market. The Company is focused on delivering reliable and affordable power in emerging developing markets with projects in Pakistan and Australia. Naheed has worked in the public and private sectors, working in consulting and banking, and sits on the boards of a few companies. She explains the story behind Oracle Power and its coal and gold projects in Pakistan and Australia. KEY TAKEAWAYS Oracle Power will be delivering coal mining power, coal to liquid, and coal to gas. They will be doing all that from just one site. They are currently diversifying their commodity platform and jurisdictions. Diversification mitigates risk. The gold exploration industry in WA has seen unprecedented levels of activity over the past 18 months. Oracle Power secured their WA gold resources at a low price. They have the geochemical results and are planning a drilling programme for their Northern Zone gold asset. In the Northern Zone, they are also expecting to find Nickel. The geochemistry results for the Johndee East project are about to be delivered. Other firms have already expressed interested in buying their gold projects. Oracle Power has huge growth potential. The Oracle Power team is always happy to answer questions from investors. BEST MOMENTS ‘The people work very well together. Ep 142Coking Coal Mining in Zimbabwe and Gold Mining in Mali with Carl Esprey
In this episode, we chat to Carl Esprey, Executive Director of Contango Holdings who have a large stake in the Lubu Coal Project which is a high-value coking coal project in Zimbabwe and also has their Garalo gold project in Mali. Carl is a qualified Chartered Accountant and Chartered Financial Analyst and has a long career in the natural resource investment and development sector. He gives us an overview of both projects and a better understanding of the coking coal sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recently there´s been strong price movement within the commodity complex in general. Contango started out looking at assets that were not greenfield assets. In particular, projects that have resource statements and some sort of mine scoping study. With bulk minerals, Contango only opens mines when they have secured a demonstrable offtake agreement. CoVid has made it hard for people to visit assets, which has slowed the rate at which deals can be closed. Demand for coking coal is strong. In some mines, it is now possible to mine just the coking coal. Instead of having to move and backfill the thermal coal too. The Garalo gold project is probably way bigger than initially thought. Garalo is being studied in more detail. At which point, they will tell the market more and decide what size mill to build. No royalty agreements will be signed until the size of the resource is fully understood. They are hoping to pick up neighbouring properties in the vicinity of Garalo. BEST MOMENTS ‘In the case of bulk minerals, like coal, we won´t build mines until we have a demonstrable offtake agreement. ´ ‘Coking coal is up about 35% since we listed.’ ‘You want to build a large mill and feed it all in from satellite deposits.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 141Opportunities for Generalist Investors Looking for Diversity with Keith Floyd
In this episode, we chat to Kyle Floyd, founder, chairman, and CEO of Vox Royalty who is a high-growth precious metals royalty and streaming company with a portfolio of over 50 royalties and streams spanning nine jurisdictions and are one of the fastest-growing companies in the royalty sector. Kyle is an investment banker with a background in the mining sector. We hear about his journey in growing this royalty company. Including why it’s different than the other royalty companies out there in this space. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kyle created Vox as an outlet for generalist investors who wanted to invest in the commodity sector. Vox focuses on what they call third-party royalties. For the last 15 years, royalty companies have outperformed essentially every commodity-based benchmark you can compare them to. Royalty companies take cash from an operations revenue. Royalty companies do not participate when the operation needs cash replenishment. Vox has invested in establishing deal sourcing agents across the world. Enabling them to speak to asset owners first. They mix and diversify their assets as a way of reducing risk. BEST MOMENTS ‘The issue was that the risk-adjusted returns in the small-cap mining sector really didn't stack up for what investors expected to realise. ´ ‘Royalty companies have outperformed essentially every commodity-based benchmark that you can compare them to.’ ‘I think we´re in a period that´s going to be very, very bullish for commodities.’ GUEST RESOURCES Vox Royalty: [email protected] https://www.voxroyalty.com/ https://twitter.com/vox_royalty https://www.linkedin.com/company/voxroyalty/ https://www.facebook.com/VOXRoyalty/?ref=bookmarks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_bgGUoAaFFyMNN8E388Oeg?view_as=subscriber Kyle Floyd: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kyle-floyd-4321004/ VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 140Why Despite Peaks and Troughs Mining is Always a Great Industry to Work in with John Ryan
In this episode, we chat to John Ryan, CEO & Director of Gold Express Mines, a multi-asset mineral resource company focused primarily on the acquisition, exploration, evaluation, and development of precious metal properties across the US. John is a mine engineer by background and also studied finance enabling him to start, develop and operate a handful of natural resource companies during his career. We chat about his career and about many of the projects he has worked on with a handful becoming a success. KEY TAKEAWAYS John has worked in the industry for decades. Filling a range of roles. He has been involved in most forms of mining. Gold Express is the result of the movements in gold created off the back of CoVid. John plans to be drilling for various minerals in Western Montana, this year. Mining is cycles of boom and bust. Part of the reason dusting off old properties works so well. Make full use of any historical data that exists. This is very inexpensive exploration. With any property, the first step is to look for flaws rather than discovering them after you have spent a lot of money. Having the right people in place at the right time is essential. Many in the industry are nearing retirement. There is not yet a new generation ready to step up, creating a skill gap. Electric vehicles and climate change pressures is likely to lead to soaring demand for copper, uranium, cobalt, and other minerals. BEST MOMENTS ‘Good old cold calling can help you to reach the right person. ´ ‘California is not called the golden state for nothing, it has produced 120-150 million ounces.’ ‘People are making use of databases and satellite data more.’ GUEST RESOURCES Email - [email protected] LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/321johnryan VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 139The Future of the European Lithium Market with Keith Coughlan
In this episode, we chat to Keith Coughlan, Managing Director at European Metals who is an Australian and UK listed mineral exploration and development company advancing a Lithium/Tin Project in the Czech Republic. Keith’s background is in stockbroking and funds management and has been involved in the funding, promoting, and acquisitions of resource companies listed on various stock exchanges like the ASX, AIM, and TSX during his career. We talk about the European Lithium market and the Cinovec lithium project that European Metals are developing in the Czech Republic KEY TAKEAWAYS Cinovec has the largest lithium resource in the EU. Europe wants electric vehicles and is actively building a battery industry to facilitate this. No country wants to rely on a long-distance lithium supply chain controlled by other countries, e.g., China. The environmental impact assessment is a critical path item in terms of developing the project. The Cinovec facility has excellent environmental and ESG credentials. Using a historic mine, processing underground, slurry pipe transportation greatly reduces disruption and the environmental impact. Local people are familiar with mining and are largely happy to see the mine re-open. There is no way that the supply of lithium can keep up with demand. At least not initially, so prices are highly likely to rise. BEST MOMENTS ‘Cinovec is about the fourth largest hard rock lithium resource in the world. ´ ‘Measuring our ESG is an ongoing process.’ ‘The demand for lithium in Europe is going to grow very very quickly.’ ‘Lithium needs to occur in the right concentration for it to be economically viable.’ GUEST RESOURCES Twitter - @CzechLithium Website - www.europeanmet.com Email - [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 138The Ethos That FuelsTectonic Metal´s Success with Tony Reda of Tectonic Metals
In this episode, we chat to Tony Reda, President, and CEO of Tectonic Metals who are a mineral exploration company focused on the acquisition, exploration, discovery, and development of mineral resources from district-scale projects in politically stable jurisdictions that have the potential to host world-class orebodies in Canada and US. Tony talks about Tectonic Metals and their Tibbs and Seventymile projects and what the future holds for the company. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tony´s first big discovery was the Coffee Gold Project that was later acquired for $520 million. Focusing on risk management brings many benefits. Targeting gneissic rock with the same host rock as Pogo has uncovered numerous new drill sites. Re-exploring areas using new approaches is also producing good results. Tectonic Metal’s focus is on working alongside native corporations with the backing of indigenous people. Provided the native population is pro-mining working on their land often results in a streamlined process. Making a positive difference to the community during the first stage of mining is a win-win. Having a diverse team is important. For example, they have an environmental biologist, which brings a different perspective. Ep 137West African Gold Mining Opportunities with Bert Monro
In the episode, we chat to Bert Monro, CEO of Cora Gold who are a UK-based AIM-listed company that is a gold exploration company with a focus on gold exploration in Mali and Senegal. Bert has a strong background in Africa having spent over 10 years at Hummingbird Resources in senior management, so has a great understanding of how to develop gold mining assets in those regions. He shares what Cora is currently focusing on, explaining why and elaborating on the opportunities that still exist in the area and how investors and others can tap into them. KEY TAKEAWAYS Cora is mainly a grassroots explorer making discoveries in West Africa. The feasibility study for Sanankoro Gold Discovery is on track for delivery later in the year. This project is fully financed, but investment opportunities still exist for the project. Exploratory drills will be complete in July. So far, the results are excellent. Much of the site is covered by free digging material, keeping extraction costs low. Cora has 5 permits in the Sankara project area, but they also have permits in other parts of West Africa. The engagement with the local community is good and ESG projects are progressing fast. Cora is one of the first companies to get its exploration permit renewed, post the new mining code. The pandemic threw up some curveballs, but the team has adapted well. BEST MOMENTS ‘The thing we really like about Sanakoro is that you´ve got a lot of oxide material. ´ ‘CoVid didn´t change the way we operated the business because we were working remotely before.’ ‘Look to build the lowest cost operation possible … to maximize your margin whatever the gold price.’ ‘I think gold equities offer investors great leverage into the gold price. ´ GUEST RESOURCES Twitter LinkedIn Cora Gold website [email protected] VALUABLE RESOURCES [email protected] https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ www.mining-international.org https://twitter.com/MiningConsult https://www.facebook.com/MiningInternational.org https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC69dGPS29lmakv-D7LWJg_Q?guided_help_flow=3 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first world to third world countries from Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Ep 136The Gold Demand Trends Report - with Krishan Gopaul
In this episode we chat to Krishan Gopaul, Market Intelligence Manager, at the World Gold Council. He’s here to discuss the Gold Demand Trends quarterly report for Q1 2021, which is the World Gold Council’s leading piece of intellectual property. The report analyses the global gold market, examining global supply and demand, as well as wider industry trends within the investment, jewellery, technology and mining sectors. Krishan tells us what has been driving gold’s performance this year and what were the most interesting developments globally for gold demand in Q1. KEY TAKEAWAYS The World Gold Council is a market development organisation, and their objective is to sustain and stimulate the demand for gold India has added a further 19 tonnes to their gold reserves, and have been a regular purchaser. Kazakhstan has added eight tonnes, and Uzbekistan has added 23 tonnes. In March, the Central Bank of Hungary bought 63 tonnes of gold, tripling its gold reserves. It was the 4th largest purchase by any bank since 2009. Investors have been pouring their capital into gold as a way of ensuring their investment. Consumers demand for gold has declined, but is steadily rising once more. Ep 135Understanding The Potash Industry - with Graham Clarke
In this episode we chat to Graham Clarke, CEO of Emmerson Plc who are a potash development company focused on the development of the Khemisset Potash Project in Northern Morocco. Graham is a senior executive of over 30 years with an expertise in potash and polyhalite working for the likes of Cleveland Potash and Sirius Minerals so is someone who understands the industry inside out and I’m interested as you to learn more about the potash industry. Graham talks about the potash industry as a whole and what Emmerson’s plans are moving forward through to construction and production. KEY TAKEAWAYS Every plant in the world needs six macronutrients in order to grow - phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen, sulphur, magnesium and calcium Around nine global producers provide, collectively, 90% of the world's supply of potash, meaning that this essential ingredient only comes from a handful of companies. There are always generations that go before, that can hand down the lessons of the past in order to better secure a future. The best people to surround one's self with are those who can provide solutions in a positive way. It's not enough to simply point out challenges and issues. The mining sector is shifting from being a 19th century, industrial stereotype, to an integral part of cleanliness and responsibility. When the aerospace sector recovers from the impact of COVID, there will be a sharp need for more in the cobalt space, in which Anglo Pacific is well positioned. BEST MOMENTS 'I had some beginner's luck' 'That quarter of a million dollar investment has led to a half-billion dollar royalty' 'I want to know how things can be done, not why they can't be done' 'We want to be part of the story of mining in the 21st century' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Julian Treger Twitter - https://twitter.com/juliantreger?lang=en Anglo Pacific - https://www.anglopacificgroup.com/leadership/ ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Ep 126An Investing And Speculating Masterclass- with Rick Rule
In this episode we chat to the legendary investor and speculator Rick Rule who has a 45 year career track record in the commodities and resources space, so knows a thing or two about investments and commodity lifecycles. Rick shares his wealth of knowledge, wisdom and humour around commodity investing and speculating. He gives us an update on current commodity markets as a whole especially with the 10 year US treasury rate gradually increasing and what impact this will have on commodities and the industry plus his views in the junior market space, M&A activity and what commodity is most under valued at this point in time. KEY TAKEAWAYS The increase in the gold price from $1100 to $1900 over the past decade, coincided with the increase on the US tenure, falling from 250 basis points to 60 basis points. Gold prices and gold equities will be extremely sensitive in the coming years to the US tenure rate. It's not just the nominal rate, though. This is the real rate. If the interest rate continues to rise, including consumer debt and mortgage rates, then the impact will be fascinating to observe. We can expect a reduction in economic vitality. Physical gold is a high vale relative-to-weight item, so if you are running out, you can easily transport it from around the world. Silver is very different in this regard.
