S5 Ep 860086 - From Game Community to Game Development with Joe Neary
Show-notes “From Game-Play-Community to Game Development with Joe Neary” Podcast 08-04-2021 – 10.00 amTitle: 0086 – From Game-Play-Community to Game DevelopmentSubtitle: Talking with Joe Neary about "finding your niche in games"Link:Season: 5Episode: 86Preamble[Allen Higgins]“In this episode of The Game Chat we talked with Joe Neary, a Senior QA/Tester at, Romero Games on the journey from Game-Play-Community into Game Development”-----Hosts: András PappRuth CampionGuest: Joe Neary (QA and Testing, Romero Games)-----OPENING -----[Ruth]Welcome to the Game Chats series on Design Talk.I am Ruth Campion[Allen]I am Allen Higgins-----[András]And I am András PappAnd today we are chatting with Joe Neary, QA Manager at Romero Games, based in Galway, Ireland.Welcome Joe. First, could you talk a little about your own background and how you got drawn into the game development?[Some discussion points]●We have seen steady quiet growth in boardgames and tabletop over the last decades, in parallel, even symbiotically with the video games industry… there does seem to be more room for people playing games together in-person?●Where do LARPs fit in the game ecology? Somewhere between RPGs and theatre?●As you have been active in organising community activities in the tabletop and game-jam scene, in Galway... Among agencies and others there seems to be an assumption that simply creating these spaces and events is sufficient to incubate new game ventures; is it enough?●Game Testing and QA seems like a dream job; what does QA and testing involve?●What are the advantages and disadvantages of systematic testing and the ad hoc approach? Which is a better way to deal with bugs and different problems?●Does testing and QA feedback act as a path for new design elements in a game?●What would you consider to be good or best practices for development teams to follow? Stand-up meetings, brains trust, playtesting (some of these practices from Agile software methods, some reported by Pixar in CGI, film and animation industry…)●How have Covid lockdowns changed the way these practices work? What changes would you keep, what would you go back to in the future?●Does the atmosphere of a game design team need to be playful and full of games itself?●What is the ideal environment for this work? (Rooms full of props? Out of hours game-fests? Playful challenges? Games your team plays as a group?)●Does the influence of such a big publisher as Paradox have an impact on the work environment? Does it change the dynamics of a team?●What, for you, are the stand-out games of recent years? Which video game will you consider a masterpiece? -----CLOSING-----[András]Thank you, Joe, to taking the time to give us your insights into games and the work of game QA and testing.AcknowledgementsMusic (CC-BY-NC-SA license) Title: “Synth Beat Echo Intro”Artist: “András Papp”Source: “Podcast Intro Song.wav”License: “CC BY-NC-SA”The `Design Talk (dot IE)’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 This license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0By taking part you are giving permission for your voice to be recorded, for the recording to be edited, and for it to be posted and published as a podcast. S5 Ep 850085 - Publishing Boardgames with Robin David
Welcome to the Game Chats edition of Design TalkWe are delighted to welcome Robin David today.Robin is a multi-published multi-award-winning game designer, with a portfolio of games across a number of genres; narrative, interactive fiction, puzzle solving, word games, and RPGs.Robin, could first tell us a little about yourself and your path to game design?[Hugh and Allen will chip in comments questions as/when timely/appropriate]When you reflect upon your personal design process, from conception to completion, would you say you have hit upon a repeatable process?I have been impressed by your commitment to feedback, using print and play, downloadable versions and opening your designs to playtesters...Having successfully released at least 13 titles over the last six or so years, (perhaps more) and assuming you have many other ideas at various stages of completion, encompassing interactive fiction, games and game expansions. Are you now designing at an optimal pace or are you finding yourself increasing the rhythm at which you develop and publish new games? We have seen steady quiet growth in boardgames and tabletop over the last decades, in parallel, even symbiotically with the video games industry… is it co-equal coexistence; is it either-or, or yes-and; is there a shift with people preferring being together in-person…)?Some think that achieving the goals of a Kickstarter funding campaign is the end goal, but the truth is that in many ways it is just the start of the work isn’t it. Reaching your first Kickstarter goal was just the end of the first phase, the beginning of the second part of the story…What for you are the benefits/pitfalls of using a crowd funding platform to support your publishing goals? Why would a designer go the free-to-download print-and-play route? Is, having released print-and-play, a disincentive to signing a publisher later on?https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamedesigner/81485/robin-davidAcknowledgementsMusic Title: Juno her Artist: Uncle MilkSource: https://bit.ly/2Ox3uMLLicense: CC BY 4.0Cover Art Title: “Reusable Type” + Algerian + Engravers MTArtist: Allen HigginsSource: GameChat_RobinDavid_InstaSQR.jpgComposite image credits: Tiffany Moon + British Library (https://flic.kr/s/aHsjP5Gnq9 as Public Domain https://bit.ly/3mr6IAO)License: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0Podcast license:The `Design Talk (dot IE)’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license Hosted on Acast. S5 Ep 820082 - Design Team Interactions with Sean O’Donohoe
[Sergi] Welcome to the Game Chat series on Design Talk. Our guest today is Sean O'DonohoeSean is a Senior Level Designer at Black Shamrock - a Virtuos Studio.Among the titles he has worked on “The Outer Worlds”, an action RPG by Obsidian Studios, stands out perhaps as one of his most formative project experiences.First, Sean, does everyone want to be the designer? Sean, we’ve been asked before; What does a game designer do? I mean, isn't it obvious? Aren't they artists or coders? Don't they write and 'design'?Could you share your thoughts on the role of the game designer as distinct from coders, artists, writers?Perspectives on documentation, the game bible, the design-development pipeline, design aesthetics of dungeon/level design.Linking dungeon design with world design.Micro/macro, game narrative and the larger story. The links between a conceptual whole and the gritty detail.Do you ever find yourself thinking "this is too complicated"? How do you manage the tension between complexity and simplicity? Which is the worst part about designing a game?Talking about the placement of design assets and making the in-game play believable. Doors, kitchens, toilets... Does Liz England’s post on the Door Problem (on the Gamasutra blog) still hold? (where she illustrates the role of the game designer with Doors as the metaphor. The designer takes ownership of the holism of the game, from the very big to the very small, from excruciating detail to the whole sense of the world, that it makes sense.)Does the atmosphere of the team change in the build-up to a release?Do you usually play the games you design? Which video game will you consider a masterpiece from the point of view of a game designer? How has the image of game designers changed? The music used was “Spliff and Wesson” by AirglowFor more details see the show-notes and acknowledgements.AcknowledgementsMusic Title: Spliff and WessonArtist: AirglowSource: https://bit.ly/2uR5um8License: CC BY 4.0Cover Art #2Title: Beam me up. S5 Ep 810081 - Talking Narrative with Aoife O’Friel
Guest: Aoife O'Friel (aoifeofriel.wixsite.com/portfolio)Hosts: Jenine Lynch [co-host]Liana Schley [co-host]Allen Higgins [co-host]-----Welcome to the Game Chat series on Design Talk.Aoife O’Friel is a writer and narrative designer, from Waterford, now based in Sweden and working for Ubisoft. We hope to cover a few areas. The role of the writer/designer, getting into the video game industry, and the demands of working on game projects.●Narrative design is crucial in game design but perhaps not widely understood. What does a day in the office look like?●You have talked about "Iteration/emergent narratives/planning for interactivity"●Can you share some thoughts on "the quest/writing collaborative approach of working with the other moving parts of game design - which tends to mean rolling with constant change!""●How does narrative feed into and from the game development dynamic, which is, these days, like most software projects, an iterative ‘agile’ process.●Q: How deep does Narrative get into and drive the game project?●Q: Is there value in developing narrative before development? Should they unfold in tandem? ●Q: What problems or opportunities arise if narrative is added towards the end of a project?●Q: When is narrative needed as opposed to decorative? Although some players might view it as incidental, narrative and backstory is offered for characters and the gameworld for many sports and combat games.●Q: Does dialogue define a narrative driven game? JRPGs for example often deliver a lot of cut-scene and dialogue.●Q: Does the game engine limit/drive narrative potential? Good examples?●Q: What is the relationship between narrative and game mechanics? ●Q: Does using the same engine for different games limit the scope of the story-telling?●Q: Can narrative create a real difference between games built on the same platform, perhaps reimagining the gameplay (would Niantic's Ingress and Pokemon Go be examples)? There might be examples of this when players make mods e.g. from Skyrim's Mods community? So, on that note…We would like to thank you for making time in your busy schedule to talk to us today. And for sharing your knowledge and insights into the art of crafting narrative for game design.AcknowledgementsMusic (CC-BY-NC-SA license) Title: King of the Universe (single version)Artist: Ape RisingSource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0jmmWXqmk8 License: CC-BY-NC-SA license Cover Art (CC-BY-NC-SA license)Title: “Game Chat ”Artist: “Liana Schley ”Source: AoifeOFriel_PodcastGuest_2021_Thumbnail Art.jpgLicense: “CC BY-NC-SA”The `Design Talk (dot IE)’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 This license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0By taking part you are entering a verbal agreement giving permission for your voice to be recorded, for the recording to be edited, and for it to be posted and published as a podcast available from Acast and wherever people get their podcasts. S4 Ep 660066 - Care for Knowledge with Lizzy McComish
-----Interview with Lizzy McComish, GSDM @ Microsoft -----Welcome to the Design Talk podcast. We are interested in exploring the practical challenges of learning and growing the "know who, know where, know why, know what, know how, know about" in organisations. Particularly the kinds of practices or behaviours we will need to interact with and manage global partners, and ultimately to be a global partner. We are thrilled to be joined today by Lizzy McComish. Lizzy is a Global Service Delivery Manager at Microsoft. What does the GSDM role cover?Talk about the soft skills that are needed to succeed in this line of work?On vendor selection, what types of services are suited to outsourcing?Key factors when making an outsourcing decision?Does culture play a role? If you walked into a new client-side engagement, and you looked at the existing supply management team. Have you ever said “oh, that's great, I can see this is run well”?What are the features of a well-run team? What practices do you expect to see?You have said “If i'm not successful, they [vendor] aren’t successful” Could you talk a little more about that idea and your role as the in-between client and the vendor? When it comes to making the vendors feel as part of Microsoft, how does that actually work in practice?Managing Knowledge & Training: if on a vendor side, if a staff member was absent for an extended period and if it led to significant issues...How do you approach training when it comes to your vendors? Is shadowing a key practice? How does it work, what benefits do you find? Is the link between metrics and relationships negative or can they reinforce productively?Any tips on managing the vendor relationship, particularly transitioning between an incoming and an outgoing vendor?Closing-----------------------------------Acknowledgements, LicenseMusicTitle: “’Intro 1 Delay Classic”Artist: “Ivan Šipek”Source: personal copyLicense: “CC BY” Cover Art Title: “Cover Art”Artist: “Anastasia Kucerovska”Source: personal copy & image clip art via Canva (canva.com)License: “CC BY”The `Design Talk (dot IE)’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 This license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0By taking part you are entering a verbal agreement giving permission for your voice to be recorded, for the recording to be edited, and for it to be posted and published as a podcast available from Acast and wherever people get their podcasts. Guests: Ciaran Treanor and Cormac Ó Foghlú Hosts: Rujuta Sandeep Kulkarni and Allen Higgins -----OPENING -----[Rujuta]Welcome to the Design Talk podcast. We are joined today by Ciaran Treanor, Sonalake’s CTOand Cormac Ó Foghlú, VP Operations at Sonalake.First, could I ask you both, to tell us a little about yourselves, before we talk about Sonalake? Some general questions we might ask if needed to keep the conversation going:1. Can you brief us more about Sonalake?2. Is it difficult to bring contractors into the fold?3. What is the level of involvement you expect clients to have over the lifetime of the project?4. So initial start versus now in the context of trust how as Sonalake and the business development approach changed?5. There is porosity in the working from home environment. The organizations are very poros. Do you think this creates a security threat? Does this create a risk for client and data confidentiality?6. Do you think remote working is the future especially when Ireland is looking to make “Work from home” a permanent option legally?-----CLOSING-----[Rujuta]So, on that note…Ciaran and Cormac, we would like to thank you for making time in your busy schedules to talk to us today. And for giving us an inside view of client engagement models, software development and your perspective on services as a team sport. S4 Ep 610061 - Start-up Pathways with Dermot Casey
This talk was recorded on November 4th 2020.In this episode I talk with Dermot Casey about the growth of digital start-ups in Ireland and supporting that crucial period of early stage business development. At the time of recording Dermot had been working for the previous five years as a venture leader at the NDRC, Ireland’s National Digital Research Centre’s accelerator programme for digital start-ups. He has since co-established Resolve Partners, a venture consulting partnership, and then moved on to become the CEO for IRDG, a non-profit, business-led Innovation Network for member companies and colleges.-----OPENING -----Q: What does a venture leader’s working day look like?Q: How does the NDRC support entrepreneurs and start-ups?Q: Do start-ups use dev jams and design sprints to punctuate the business development cycle or do they end up doing rapid prototyping and development all the time?Q: Does Ireland offer any unique advantages for start-ups? Is this a good time to start a digital savvy business?Q: How do we deal with failure? How do we resolve that conflict between the desire for success and the almost inevitability of failure?Mentions:Des Traynor from Intercom reflecting on the transitions you make when scaling from being a start-up to being a company.https://www.intercom.com/blog/videos/lessons-learned-from-scaling-a-team/Eamon Leonard, one of Ireland's most experienced tech founders:https://www.siliconrepublic.com/start-ups/eamon-leonard-named-irelands-net-visionary-2012IxDA Dublinhttp://ixda.ieSamuel Beckett quote “Ever tried. S2 Ep 410041 - In a Nutshell
An overview of Tina Lowe's "The Blind Spot" podcast - mission and accomplishments. I’m proud to have helped Tina Lowe develop the Blind Spot podcast. The Blindspot podcast is a community engagement platform, complementing Tina’s role as University College Dublin Accessibility Officer Tina’s goal for the Blind Spot was to raise awareness, create a forum and learning resources for students, focusing on access and accessibility in all its diverse forms. So far, the pod has…· Introduced us to Tina and her personal story.· Talked about how the Built Environment can both enable and constrain a person’s access to a normal life.· The innovation of Sensory Gardens and how seemingly mundane actions can transform our experience of outdoor spaces.· The need for mobility across multiple dimensions: Universal Access to Transport, Access to Higher Education and Access in Sport.· Discussing with the UCD Student’s Union about ensuring access is at the very heart of University Life.· Including, the Student Perspective on Neurodiversity, access and obstacles to Diagnosis.· Talking with an Actor and Autism Activist; and the realities of Neurodiversity, coping with Invisible Disability.· A topic that has a big impact on Tina’s own life, the importance of Irish Guide Dogs and their mission supporting people with vision impairment attain greater independence; · Also, the value of Assistance Animals for neurodiverse children, teens and adults.· Tina touched on the latest advances in Accessible Technology with VISION Ireland, (previously NCBI)· And finally, she provides a behind scenes look at creating The Blind Spot podcast with her production team. All in all, the project thus far, Tina has interviewed 28 guests, over 15 episodes, producing more than 10 hours of recorded content. This is an important body of work that will, hopefully, grow over time.Giving voice to and reflecting upon, issues of access across the university and society at large; while also, highlighting the achievements of real people overcoming real obstacles. The Blind Spot podcast was funded as part of the “University for All” Faculty Partner Programme with the support of UCD Access and Lifelong Learning and the UCD College of Business. For more information see “The Blind Spot” on Spotify for notes and descriptions of episodes. https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindspot-ieCredits and LicenseCover Art Title: YouTube talking head screenshotArtist: Allen HigginsSource: In_a_Nutshell_LoweHiggins.pptxLicense: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0Podcast LicenseBlind Spot (dot IE) CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 The license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0By taking part you give permission for your voice to be recorded, for the recording to be edited, and for it to be posted and published as a podcast. S2 Ep 280028 - Design Thinking - Squid App Design Choices with Katie Farrell and Caolan Melvin
Guests: Katie Farrell Caolan Melvin https://www.squidloyalty.ieToday we are talking about design choices, or at least we think of them as choices. We are joined Katie Farrell (COO) and Caolan Melvin (Head of Software Development) from Squid Loyalty, am Irish digital start-up founded in 2019. First, would you like tell us a little about yourselves by way of introduction…-----Katie, the spark of the idea for Squid happened around the time you took part in the study abroad program at University of California, Berkeley? What were your inspiration points, and earliest ideas for Squid then, how have they changed over time? (based on feedback and learning from users and clients?)Caolan, how do you balance writing code with the idea of iterative development and user feedback? And of course, you have to think about the operational side of the technology, scaling and availability. So, there must be a tension between introducing functionality while keeping the foundations solid.Your ideas behind the visual presentation and User Interface (UI)Your thoughts of the dynamics of UX user experience:The choices you made for the underlying technology choices and architecture:Thank you Katie and Caolan for chatting with us today. We often think of design as a series of choices we make in the workshop. Which it is, but you’ve also highlighted how design can also be a dialog, and what we as designers need to do is listen and respond.AcknowledgementsMusicTitle: “Eza One - Supernova”Artist: “Argofox”Source: “https://soundcloud.com/argofox/ezaone-supernova”License: “CC BY”PodcastThe `Design Talk dot ie’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license (aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)This license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 Hosted on Acast. S1 Ep 160016 - The Metaphysics of Games Part 2
Welcome to this extended seminar with Donncha Kavanagh on the history and Metaphysics of Games, Play & Fun.In the next couple of episodes Donncha will talk about the background, key ideas, concepts and theories surrounding the role of games and play in human society. In part 2 Donncha juxtaposes the split between work and play as distinct domains of human character (good and bad; valued versus vulgar); and the modern era’s increasingly unashamed appreciation for leisure. Modernity; contemporary and post-modern treatment of games and play. From theorising games and play as the genesis of human culture – homo ludens – through to the contemporary move to employ the mechanics of games and play in purely utilitarian applications, the psycho-physiological application of games and play experience for behavioural control, profit and production.Thank you for listening to Design Talk. The music used is Tired Traveler On The Way Home by Andrew Codeman……and Jimmy’s Jam from Ampletunes. S1 Ep 100010 - The Game Chat with Ruth and Allen
In this session we play the "Four Games" exercise. The exercise simply involves responding to the statement (think of it as a question) in which you choose and then talk about and explain why you will play four chosen games again:a card or board gamea video gamea physical sports gameand a business gamificationWe'll provide some pointers for running the exercise yourself at the end of the podcast.[recording of Ruth and Allen's discussion]Our goal with the "Four Games" exercise is to start a process of thinking about games in a deep way. We start by reflecting on some games that are personal to you. Get you to talk about some games that remain (or were) influential in your life. I'm pretty certain we will all learn something new and we will start playing with the topic itself. What makes a game a game? Does a game have to be fun? When is a game? What makes a game different from other parts of life? Why do we play games? What do games add to life? What is game's role in society? Are even single player games social? These and many more questions. If you're going to run the exercise yourself we recommend preparing by writing a short letter to a friend that answers the four prompts. Think of it as a script, written as a conversation, as if you are preparing to record the talk for our next podcast. But, and this is important, the script is just a way preparing yourself. We don't actually want you to read it it out. That approach tends to suck the spontaneity and liveliness out of speech. Do the prep, underline or highlight keywords, then find a friend to ask the questions. Your thoughts will flow, and it will be much more interesting for your audience to listen to later. Sure, you'll make some mistakes but it'll be more fun. Plus you can always edit it in post-production with Audacity or some other tool.Acknowledgement/Credits:Music mix Cold Funk - Funkorama by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Artist: http://incompetech.com/The `Design Talk dot ie’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license (aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). 0000 - Trailer - Design Talk (dot IE)
Title: 0000 – The Design Talk TrailerSubtitle: We need to talk about design! (every podcast needs a trailer doesn’t it?)Link: https://www.designtalk.ieSeason: 1Episode: 0-----Hosts: Allen HigginsEditing:Allen Higgins-----OPENING -----Welcome to Design Talk!(Podcast goals in a sentence)We need to talk about design! Recall the frustration YOU FEEL whenever THE COMPUTER SAYS NO!The Design Talk podcast wrestles with design issues in software, games, digital technologies, and the systems that make the World. This podcast is for you!Anyone who cares about the things we make and use, and digital things in particular.…because we are all, in some way, involved in designing.Students, engineers, developers, modellers, artists, architects, managers, researchers. The act of design, DESIGN-ING is one of the most impactful yet obscure domains of human action.Assumptions surrounding users are, naturally, encoded AND built-in to the structure of any particular design. And these assumptions can exclude and disempower people. But designs can also empower and enhance the abilities of us all.We are interested in talking about and understanding design concerns across a range of fields; "design for the wild" as Bill Buxton would say. From game design to all things digital. The economics of design.Design's entanglements with regulation and standards. Designing organisations, teams, outsourcing, interorganisational systems, international supply chains, logistics and more. All are designs, and are designed in some way.So, what is the essence of design and the backstory to designs we’re familiar with? Not just the technology, objects or 'things'. How does a particular design work in practice. And how is design work itself performed.Let’s dig into the heart of creative action, of hacking and changing the world.Let’s hear from entrepreneurs and innovators, and uncover the politics of innovation. The challenges of finding and building an audience, a market, of introducing the new.The personal, social, human side to design work. Its history;the practice and reality of crafting:of tinkering, making, breaking and making again;learning through failure. We hope you enjoy the first season.Come, listen to our take on technology in stories, panels, interviews and discussions. We really do need to talk about design!-----CLOSING-----Please follow, download and listen to new episodes. If you like the show click follow, share and tell your friends. It would be amazing if you tell just one other person about the design talk podcast. And get in touch if you’d like to take part in future episodes of Design Talk (dot IE).-----END-----AcknowledgementsMusic Title: Total EclipseArtist: Nathaniel Wyvern'sSource: https://nathanielwyvern.bandcamp.comLicense: “CC BY 4.0”Cover ArtTitle: Design Talk (dot IE) VoicesArtist: May HigginsSource: designtalk_handdrawn.pngLicense: “CC BY-NC-SA”The `Design Talk (dot IE)’ podcasts are released under the “Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike version 4.0 creative commons license aka CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 This license can be viewed at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0By taking part you are giving permission for your voice to be recorded, for the recording to be edited, and for it to be posted and published as a podcast.
