308 Day to Day Wins and Challenges with Jake Skelton : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
This episode’s discussion: Operations, Career Paths, Growing & Managing an Emergency Dental Clinic, Time Management, and the Consultants/Vendors that Dentists can save money using. I'm originally from Calumet City IL (South Side of Chicago). I attended Western Michigan University where I earned my degree in Aviation Business Administration. My Senior year at WMU I worked as a Flight Instructor for the university which helped springboard my career as a professional pilot. This is also where I met my wife Lauren (who is also a pilot). She was actually a flight student (not my student) while I was an instructor. Lauren and I went on to get married but found the life of a professional pilot wasn't conducive to starting a family so we decided to make some changes and chose starting a family over flying professionally. I then went on to sell mortgages which led to a banking/finance/investing career. While this was all going on, my best friend/college roommate/bestmen in each other's wedding/Godparents to each other's first born children/non-biological brother, Dr. Nick Bachman DDS was in the process of purchasing a dental practice in Greenwood Indiana with his wife Dr Beth Bachman DDS. We had always talked about working with each other and decided that after the first year in business he'd see how the numbers looked and see if it made sense to bring me on to help manage the practice. Now one practice has grown to two and not a day goes by that I don't love going into work. I now work as the Director of Operations or GM (for lack of better titles) for Bachman Family Dentistry in Greenwood Indiana and Affordable Columbus Dental Care in Columbus Indiana. I also just started my own practice consulting business. Bachman Family Dentistry is a large traditional practice but Affordable Columbus Dental Care is unique in that it is an emergency walk-in dental clinic.
307 Gold Virtual Assistant with Arreanna Cromartie : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
This episode’s discussion: - What is a dental virtual assistant? - How does a dental virtual assistant help the dental office? - What services does Gold Virtual Assistant focus on? - How does Gold Virtual Assistant access dental practice information? - How does Gold Virtual Assistant save dental offices money? Let me first introduce myself, my name is Arreanna K. Cromartie, and I am the owner of Gold Virtual Assistant, www.goldvirtualassistant.com, the leading dental virtual assistant. If you are not familiar with the concept of my business I can further explain it to you. Gold Virtual Assistant caters to the modern day dental professional who desires efficiency, rapid results and keen eye for detail on both long and short term basis. My company provides professional administrative support to dental offices across the nation. We provide services to include verifying insurance, claims management, account management and more. We live in 2015, a day of modern technology, and with that being said we at Gold VA's believe that the dental office staff should receive a makeover. I have been in administration for over a decade and throughout my time the one thing that goes unnoticed is there are never enough hands to lend and heads to put together. I remember working in an office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. leaving for the day thinking I can do more around 7 o’clock at night. I developed this business for that purpose, to achieve my goals of providing a stable but yet productive working environment as well as help achieve the goals of other dental offices. I come to you all today with the goal of spreading the importance a virtual assistant can bring to any dental office. Although we order pizzas by text, submit prescriptions with an electronic click, buy a home from another country, even submit our taxes electronically, we still for some reason are skeptical of a virtual assistant. Why? Virtual assistants are the new dental office and whether you sign up now or later you will eventually have at least one VA on your team years from now. I mean I don't know too many people that would be hesitant to someone putting money in your hands and that's actually what dental offices are doing when they reject the idea. www.GoldVirtualAssistant.com

Mighty MolarMan & Friends make education, dental appointments, and dental hygiene FUN !! Juan Molano: Juan Molano, the artist responsible for helping to bring the animated Mighty MolarMan & Friends characters to life in the picture books and cartoons of Molar Towne. He showed Juan the ropes, and the young artist was on his way—on his way to Alaska, specifically, where he continued to explore drawing and painting and also developed a lifelong love of snowboarding. More moves—and mentors—were in store for Juan. His parents, Cristina and Gabriel, who have been very influential in his life, moved the family to the state of Washington. Along the way he discovered wakeboarding, as well as storyboarding, and adopted animation as his chosen outlet for artistic expression. Taught by animation pros with backgrounds that include such renowned animation studios as Dreamworks and Disney, among others, Juan sharpened his animation skills with many kinds of cartoons and even studied acting and the human form to breathe life into his characters on the screen. After years of working on various animation projects, he found the ideal fit with Mighty MolarMan & Friends, jumping at the chance to animate and illustrate “Molar in the Mirror,” the new children’s book published by Molar Towne Productions. When not creating multimedia that takes the bite out of dental visits or dabbling with his oil paints, Juan has fun with his family and friends. www.mightymolarman.com

299 Treating the Worn Dentition with Steve Cutbirth : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
When young Steve Cutbirth broke his two front teeth sliding into second base, little did he realize that he would spend his adult life helping others who met similar fates. The art and science of aesthetic restorative dentistry became his passion, one that has continued to expand during the past quarter-century. Today, Dr. Cutbirth maintains a full-time practice in Waco, Texas, that is in the top 1% of practices in the country based on production with an overhead of 40%; but he doesn’t stop there. As Director of the Center for Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Cutbirth shares his patient-first philosophy and commitment to state-of-the-art excellence with like-minded colleagues. Dentists from throughout the nation as well as abroad attend the Advanced Restorative Series, which is a five-weekend course dealing with advanced restorative techniques, differential diagnosis and treatment of facial pain (TMJ), functional/occlusal problems, and practice systems. Hands-on training and lectures by world-class specialists distinguish the program. Dr. Cutbirth says the endeavor is his calling, and an outgrowth of the excellent training he had. “It’s been such a rewarding venture. The teaching center is set up the way I’ve always wanted advanced dental education for myself.” Masters’ Courses limited to 12 restorative series alumni, expand the program and provide future teaching faculty. “I sincerely believe that Dr. Cutbirth wants you to have a life in dentistry uncommon to those comfortable with mediocrity,” says Eddie Pruitt, D.D.S., Houston. “He has an invaluable base of technical knowledge that he distills and presents to you on a platter.” Dr. Cutbirth also conducts and annual update/review course on the latest studies and techniques. Participants, who laud his informal, conversational style, “hold my feet to the fire. There’s so much knowledge in the group,” Dr. Cutbirth says. He’s convinced that the “toothache dentistry” mandated by healthcare systems is misguided; patients deserve the time it takes to provide them with a comprehensive examination and treatment options. Only then can dentist and patient work together to achieve the optimal result. His mentees concur. “The techniques, skills and knowledge that I absorbed from Dr. Cutbirth’s courses have completely changed the way I practice dentistry,” says Tien Ngo, D.D.S., Dallas. “Thank you Dr. Cutbirth and staff, for bringing back the passion for excellent dentistry, which I thought I had lost forever.” www.centerforard.com

Defining core values, writing a clear vision, and living congruently in order to manifest that vision became her highest priorities. After 20 years as a dentist she sold her practice, became a Life Coach in 2011, and a Certified Equine Gestalt Coach in 2015. 296 Esthetic Pediatric Crowns with Diane Johnson Krueger : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
In this episode learn about: 1. Esthetic primary crowns 2. What makes NuSmile ZR different 3. Why bioactivity is so important 4. The importance if research 5. The long-term vision of NuSmile 6. And more! I started my career in dentistry as a dental technician and lab owner, after which in 2005 I turned my focus to dental products manufacturing. During those early years, I heard a lot of dentists talk about how early childhood caries was a getting to be a very serious problem, and how treating this disease with stainless steel crowns or composite restorations was extremely unsatisfying and frustrating for them, their patients, and their parents. In our dental laboratory, we decided that there had to be a better way, and I was determined to find it. So in 1991, we developed NuSmile Pediatric Crowns, our first esthetic pediatric crown--in other words, the first pediatric crowns that looked and functioned like actual primary teeth. Today, 25 years later, we're the world's largest manufacturer of esthetic pediatric crowns, with over 4 million restorations to our name. Our team is passionately dedicated to supporting the field of pediatric dentistry, and we're honored to be able to provide our valued customers with the best products and service possible. We're able to do that in large part because of the family oriented culture we have at NuSmile, whether the team members are actual family members--such as my son Jason Johnson, our Chief Operating Officer, or my brother, Mark Binford, our Senior Vice President of New Product Development--or our many other dedicated and talented employees. www.nusmile.com

279 All About Alpha Omega with Michael Tennenbaum and Heidi Weber : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
The Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity is the oldest international dental organization. Alpha Omega (AO) also has the distinction of being the oldest international Jewish medical organization. AO was founded at the University of Maryland School of Dental Medicine in 1907 by a group of dental students. During those times, Jewish students were not permitted to form social groups so the Maryland students formed AO to fight discrimination. Little did they know but their efforts have created a lasting imprint on AO members to this day. Discrimination is not as prevalent but it still occurs. The AO international community is comprised of over 100 alumni and students chapters in ten countries. AO is an inclusive organization that welcomes people from all cultural backgrounds but our Vision, Mission, and Values are guided by our three tenets of professionalism, fraternalism, and commitment to Judaic values. Alpha Omega Vision: An international Jewish dental organization striving to enrich the lives of its members. Alpha Omega Mission: To enhance the dental profession and lives of dental professionals worldwide by promoting and supporting ideals of global oral health, education, and the bonds of fraternity. Alpha Omega Values: Commitment, Integrity, Family, Global Oral Health, Inclusivity, Leadership, and Social Justice. AO embraces the spirit of Tikkun Olam, or healing the world through charitable endeavors. As healers, our dentist and dental student members strive to make their communities better. AO strives to connect our members through our chapter meetings, international conventions, leadership seminars, and charitable projects. In January 2015, AO, in partnership with Henry Schein Cares, is launching the AO/HSC Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program in nine North American cities. Our members are volunteering to help treat this deserving population that has dental needs that are unmet. This program truly embraces the generous spirit of our members and the willingness to help others in need. AO welcomes new members into the community. 276 Meet MacPractice with Mark Hollis : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran
In 1987, Mark Hollis, a practice management consultant in New York City, began to research practice management software for several clients and friends, including a dentist and a family practitioner. Mark determined that, thanks to their ease of use, Macintosh computers would be best for his clients. He bought a Macintosh II and began looking for suitable software for his friends. A year later, after attending numerous trade shows and seeing many demos, Mark discovered HealthCare Communications, Inc. (HCC). Mark knew that their software was the one that met his criteria, and soon MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac became an integral part of his practice management consultancy. Mark Hollis had continuous experience with MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac marketing, sales, training and support for the next 15 years. He and his organization supported and consulted with over 600 clients in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. 20-30% of all dentists and physicians who used MediMac, DentalMac, or ChiroMac nationwide were Mark's clients, due in great measure to the superior ongoing local support he and his staff provided. During the past decades, Mark was responsible for designing and implementing a number of marketing and training initiatives for Apple Computer. For example, he authored a business plan for the Apple SBSS (Small Business Selling System) initiative creating a duplicateable reseller/developer model relationship. This model partnership leveraged the marketing and personnel strengths of each to advertise and produce over 200 Apple seminars, which Mark presented for HealthCare Communications. Mark delivered the very first vertical market seminar in the nation in an Apple Market Center. This model was followed by other HCC sales representatives throughout the US and significantly contributed to the success of HCC. At Apple's request, he developed and implemented a national training program for Apple MicroAge resellers interested in the healthcare market. He worked with an Apple Evangelist to the healthcare market to create and deliver a seminar program across the US at Apple Market Centers and SBA offices. Interested doctors who attended these activities were put in contact with local representatives. Many of Mark's sales and marketing initiatives provided the model for numerous HCC marketing programs. He was given numerous awards by HCC for his contributions and for being the top sales representative in the US. The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) requested that Mark construct and deliver a practice management course to dental students at their school, which he did for several years. Mark has also delivered several presentations at various dental and medical meetings. Mark continued to work with DentalMac customers, providing training, support, and service. He maintained a cooperative relationship with the MacHealth™ division of WebMD, and worked together with the Lincoln Nebraska staff to maintain customer satisfaction. He, along with his wife and business partner Mickey, have been steadfast in their commitment to their clients, to MediMac, DentalMac, and ChiroMac, and to the Macintosh platform. Mark found many ways to enhance what his clients were able to accomplish with MacHealth software. Mark was an Apple VAR for 12 years and participated in Apple's Science and Technology initiative. He was an Apple Product Professional, Apple Solutions Expert (ASE), a member of Apple Consultant Network (ACN), and a Macintosh Trainer for 10 years. By 2004 Mark felt the need to advance the software and support to a new level to create the next generation of Practice Management. His thinking was shared by the original programmer of MediMac, DentalMac and ChiroMac, Patrick Clyne. Together they founded MacPractice, Inc. in May 2004. www.macpractice.com
