Dr. Kathleen T. O'Loughlin, of Medford, Mass., became the American Dental Association's executive director/chief operating officer June 1. Prior to joining the ADA staff, Dr. O'Loughlin worked briefly for United Healthcare as its chief dental officer after having served as a consultant to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, on curriculum development in preparation for expansion of the dental school facility and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS), Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, Boston, in preparation for its 2009 accreditation. She received her dental degree (summa cum laude) from Tufts in 1981 and a master's degree in public health and health care management from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, in 1998. She received her bachelor's degree in biology (cum laude) in 1973 from Boston University. She is the first woman to hold the position of ADA executive director. From 2002–2007, Dr. O'Loughlin served as president and chief executive officer of Dental Services of Massachusetts, Inc. (d.b.a. Delta Dental of Massachusetts) where, through her leadership, the company doubled its reserves, increased membership by 400 percent and executed a successful five-year growth plan. David Alexander McGowan was Professor of Oral Surgery and Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery to the Greater Glasgow Health Board, 1977 to 1999. McGowan graduated from Queen's University, Belfast, in 1961. He became a lecturer in Oral Surgery at the London Hospital Medical College's Dental School in 1968, and was appointed Senior Lecturer the following year. He was Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1989 to 1992, and Chairman of the National Dental Advisory Committee for Scotland from 1995 to 1999. He was Chairman of the Dental Committee of the Scottish Council for Postgraduate Medical Education 1979-90, Dean of the Glasgow Dental School from 1989-94, first Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1989-92, Vice President of the General Dental Council 1994-99, Chairman of the National Dental Advisory Committee for Scotland 1995-99, Senate Assessor on the University Court 1994-99, and served on the EU Advisory Committee on Dental Education 1989-2002. Professor McGowan was awarded University medals from the Universities of Helsinki and Malta and the Bulgarian Medical Academy, and was founder Editor of Dental History Magazine 2007-11.

Dr Mike Gow graduated from The University of Glasgow in 1999. He quickly discovered that his main passions were in helping dental patients overcome their fears and phobias and dental hypnosis. His interest in hypnosis began at an early age as his father was a medical doctor who used hypnosis when treating patients. Following on from his basic training in hypnosis with The British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis which he undertook soon after graduating, Mike went on to become one of only a handful of people in the UK to gain a Masters in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry at University College London. He advanced his skills in conscious sedation and the psychology of dental anxiety by gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in The Management of Dental Anxiety from The University of Edinburgh. Mike has also trained in a wide variety of other disciplines such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and advanced local anaesthetic techniques to name a few. He has attended hundreds of courses and conferences on the topics of dental anxiety management and hypnosis. He became the youngest ever President of The British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis at the age of 31 (2008-2010) and recently concluded a second presidency of the society (2014-2016). Mike has appeared on several TV documentaries, demonstrating dental hypnosis for pain control. He is best known for his appearance on a BBC documentary when he hypnotized a patient who then had her two front teeth removed and two immediate placement implants with no Local Anaesthetics. The first tooth to be removed under hypnosis was in 1836, however this case, in 2007, was the first example of hypnosis being used for extraction followed by immediate dental implant placement with hypnosis in place of Local Anaesthetics. More recently he appeared in a BBC 'Horizon' documentary removing the wisdom tooth of a hypnotized patient with no Local Anaesthetics. Mike uses dental hypnosis to help reduce dental anxiety, fear and phobia and also for other dental applications including: to manage bruxism, reduce gagging, improve appliance tolerance, control pain, and for smoking cessation. Mike founded The International Society of Dental Anxiety Management (ISDAM) (www.isdam.com) as he felt there was a professional need for it and was always surprised that such an organisation did not already exist. The society helps dental teams better understand dental anxiety, fear and phobia and discusses the use of a variety of pharmacological, psychological, behavioural, technological and clinical techniques and approaches. The society publishes a newsletter, has an active & large Facebook group, and has a number of video resources that are free to members. There are also ISDAM seminars and workshops. Early in his career, Mike worked in Australia for a year, with one locum position working for The Aboriginal Health Service and two in private practice, including a 3 month spell working and learning under Dr James Auld, a well-known and very experienced fellow 'hypnodontist'. The rest of Mike's career has been in his homeland of Scotland. He worked in National Health Service practices for several years before setting up in Private Practice in order that he could focus more on working with patients with dental phobia and dental hypnosis. Orofacial and TMD pain has long demanded the attention of the medical and dental professions. When a physician or dentist is involved in this field, one begins to appreciate the fact that the purviews involved cross the manmade boundaries, since essentially, everything in the human body is connected in some way, shape or form. Nature knows no boundaries. Therefore, no medical professional would disagree that the treatment of orofacial and TMD pains often involves a multidisciplinary approach, which may readily cross the boundaries of the various health professions. The Center for Neural Occlusion, or CNO, will cross these borders, with the intent of disseminating objective, quantifiable and evidence-based diagnostic and treatment protocols to the various professions. The vision intertwines dentists, physicians, chiropractors, naturopaths, physical therapists, researchers and health professionals of all types to come together and realize that there are objective ways to screen for aberrations in how the stomatognathic/masticatory functions, which can readily lead to confounding symptomatology including headaches, limited or irregular mandibular range of motion, trouble chewing, hypersensitive teeth and abstract "TMJ" problems for which there seems to be no definitive diagnosis nor definitive treatment plan. The possibilities include orthopedic, neurologic, inflammatory, vascular, hormonal, and occlusal issues that may all introduce layers into the patient's perception of pain. Another extremely important parameter which the CNO will proffer that is consistently overlooked involves definitive quantification of the timing involved within the dynamic movements of the mandible, and how aberrations of this timing can adversely effect the health of the stomatognathic system. CNO will strive to set the standard for the objective, quantifiable and reproducible diagnosis of these maladies as well as the definitive treatment protocols necessary to address these issues. The first introductory level, level 0, is a basic level designed for all health care professionals. Physicians, chiropractors, headache specialists, neurologists, physical therapists, dental laboratory technicians and others will learn to add the timing within the human bite and the condition of the TMJ structures as possible causative factors for the genesis of headaches, orofacial muscular pain, neck and shoulder tension, chronically hypersensitive teeth and other TMD-related symptoms. It will disseminate the fact that these parameters are objectively measurable and potentially treatable via modern, evidence-based digital modalities. This first level aims to spread knowledge and hope for health care providers who have looked at every other possible factor for a patients seemingly TMD related issues, other than aberrations in the timing of the bite and how this correlates with painful muscular sequelae . Primarily for dental professionals, the next level, level 1, will proffer didactic information relating to the tempormandibular joints, the muscles of mastication, the teeth and the occlusion, and the basic neurology behind the dynamic stomatognathic living machine. Core to this level will be the introduction of various diagnostic technologies that actually measure various parameters within the dynamic stomatognathic system, as well as the information necessary to act upon the data gathered. Level 1 will culminate with a written examination, to test the student's knowledge of what the CNO considers most important relative to orofacial pain and TMD diagnosis and treatment. Physicians and other medical professionals are welcome to study this material as well (to compliment level 0), and will leave armed with new knowledge as to how measurable aberrations within the dynamic occlusion can readily perpetuate chronic headaches, for instance, and how to treat it. Level 2 will target dentists specifically, in that it's primary purpose will be to initiate a practical examination of the student's prowess at implementation of the Immediate Complete Anterior Guidance Development occlusal adjustment procedure used to accomplish Disclusion Time Reduction therapy. DTR therapy has been repeatedly shown for decades in evidence-based scientific research to effectively address muscular TMD issues in patients with objectively confirmed stable and adapted TMJ's. A CNO affiliated instructor who possesses at least level 2 status will travel to the dentist applicant who has passed the level 1 process to ensure that the applicant has the clinical prowess necessary to not only diagnose and understand problems relating to Disclusion Time and TMD in general, but that they can implement the DTR therapy as well. Three patients minimally will be treated in front of the CNO affiliated examiner and competence will be either granted or not depending upon their performance.
