S3 Ep 6464: Running Happy with SAD
EThis episode we talk, and we talk and talk some more, mostly about Fred's FOMO at the Colchester Half (and Art and Becky's double half and even one guy that did the triple half; looking in Tony Bonnano's general direction), we get real with Seasonal Affective Disorder, and what the F is wrong with the marathon and USATF for that matter and just general shenanigans and hijinks and jackassing all around. Jimmy barely says anything actually. A few karaoke jams to soothe the soul, and some serious "Yah Mo B There" happenings. S3 Ep 6363: Western States and Tribal Trail Running
EDisclaimer: this episode barely talks about Western States, maybe some Golden Ticket shit but we put that in the title because this will make people download it or something, and new listeners we love you (allegedly). We jackass around for a bit before landing on our preferred topic of the night: Tribalism (and take a deep deep dive into that). You're in Maine, boy- we got gators! We talk about the Delaware Water Gap and Mt. Tammany and all that Jersey-PA shit you love. We kinda made a new theme song, do you like it? You may dance a jig when you hear it. So many calls to the karaoke line as well and a special gift shows up in the post. #mylittlebrexitdog Caffeine Bullet (may or may not shit thyself): https://www.caffeinebullet.com/ Ragged Cuts: https://raggedcuts.com/ CT Sports and Fitness: https://connecticutsportsandfitness.com/ The Blue 2 Blue Challenge: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=72845 We're on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/show/44etXyR0WbJtmKRKrP7V6M We're on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cultra-trail-running/id1446356779 Please support Cultra Trail Running Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CultraTrailRunning Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/CULTRA Twitter: https://twitter.com/blueblazerunner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cultratrailrunning/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CultraTrailRunning/ Call the Karaoke Line at 203-DOG GENT Intro Guitar by Nick, Vocals Jack Byram, and beats Jack Sevigny beatstars.com/sev_beats

S3 Ep 6262: George Daniels and The Frozen Heart 900
EWhoosh! That's the sound of George Daniels passing you at your last race, and if you've been running the trails here in CT the last few years, good chance you've heard that whoosh and seen the man pass you at some point. Don't worry it's happened to all of us. George sits down and explains where he came from and what he was doing the previous 56 years before ultrarunning stardom. Fred has been running a bit and both Becky and Art have their own semi-decent streaks nipping on the heels of Mr. Murolo's epic streak. Jimmy's been jackassing around back and forth on the canal trail, readying himself for Boston. Shenanigans abound. S3 Ep 6161: Planning a Running Trip to England and Scotland
E'ello governor! Today we venture across the ol' pond to jolly England and Scotland for a bit of a field trip with the one and only LSE. We get serious for a moment, then we remember who we are and well, that's all right. The greatest benefactor the podcast has ever known (as well as my favorite triathlete ever), Peggy Byram sits down with us to talk shop and get the running (and swimming and biking) routes from Lord LSE as Art looks on in horror. We're a full-on tri podcast now, too late to stop it. Fred tries his hand at a British accent and it's pretty good. Jimmy jackasses for a good 91% of the show. The UK Ordnance Survey maps: https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/ Weird British FKT NOT held by LSE: http://fastestknowntime.proboards.com/thread/1226/isaacs-tea-trail-uk Ted Corbitt facts that Jimmy didn't post the week before: https://www.nyrr.org/about/hall-of-fame/ted-corbitt We're on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/show/44etXyR0WbJtmKRKrP7V6M We're on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cultra-trail-running/id1446356779 Please support Cultra Trail Running Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CultraTrailRunning Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/CULTRA Twitter: https://twitter.com/blueblazerunner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cultratrailrunning/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CultraTrailRunning/ Call the Karaoke Line at 203-DOG GENT Intro Guitar by Nick, Vocals Jack Byram, and beats Jack Sevigny beatstars.com/sev_beats

S3 Ep 6060: Dickin' Around with Carly Eisley
EIt's that time of the week again- I swear this is a very special episode. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll do everything in between. We have the lovely Carly Eisley in studio this week to talk about adventures, racing (she's a 10+ year vet in this sport, people) and life and how all three merge and the beauty and wonder of it all. Ups, downs and dickin' around. Rhode Island receives a minimum mention but is really #1 in our hearts. Definitely won't want to miss this one. Fred says a few words about THE ultrarunner Ted Corbitt, Becky tries to do a sewing project (allegedly) and Art keeps things rolling. Jimmy yelled into the microphone again. Did we talk about shoes? I don't remember but probably yeah. S3 Ep 5959. The Trail of Perpetuity
EHere we go with yet another installment of the pod my peoples! And just like that, the CULTRA Crew grows! We asked Fred Murolo of he'd like to go steady with us and he said YES! Then Becky made it really awkward and gave him a ring. So there's that. But what did we talk about? A lot of jackassing to be honest. But some timely facts (possibly) and some race reporting (allegedly). Just what you know and love from us. Really though we got topical for a huge portion of the pod. You'll just have to listen- Art and Becky have huge running streaks going. Jimmy has like a day. Fred has 38+ years (whoa damn). CULTRA Family Feud? Sure, it's back. Illuminating answers from the Fall Fling- or not? Pack reviews and some Good Will Hunting references. Stay tuned Ponyboy. S3 Ep 5858: Jackassing Around
ECULTRA is a podcast about... welp, tonight... we're about nothing. We just jackass around the whole show. Literally just that. Jackassing. We attempt to approach a point, but hey man- squirrels. Art's buddy Al stops by, John Coctostan and Close Talker make appearances as well. If you get those references, you'll do just fine. Jimmy manages to offend all people of Italian heritage, then walks it back (mostly). Evil Becky raises the awkwardness level to infinity in the first three minutes and there's possibly a Gentleman Dog Hotline call. S3 Ep 57Episode 57: Season Three! Ft. Fred Murolo
EWhat's good CULTRA Nation? You ready to start training again? Yeah me either. But in the meantime, let's get dirty with some training talk- Jimmy's got Boston coming up and his heart rate data is off the chain, let's troll his ass on Strava. Speaking of Strava, stout group out there, keep it up gang. Art went to Nashville and got busy, and when I say busy I mean BIZZAY. Thoroughly AND consistently. Explicit and raw too. Fred drops knowledge per usual and this one you have to listen all the way to the end to hear his amazing story from the Ancient Oaks 100 down in Florida. Then of course we deep dive into recent races like the West Rock Winter Fat Ass (shout out to friends of the podcast Brian V, Azam "Shazam", Thadd and Suzanne, the Rhode Island Contingency of Kelley and Sara, Team PomBell, Enrique "Selfie" Tello, GELATO, winner of the Gentleman Dog Photoshop Contest Steve Fleck, most of the Live Loud Clique, et cetera) It was truly a #special day. Then we talked a while, then we went home, show was only an hour and a half my dudes! We did it. Possibly talked about Kenyans doping or illegal shoes, UROY stuff, whatever. Art told me to put things in the show notes that I definitely forgot. Oh well. Welcome to the future, bitches. Ep 5656. Interview with the amazing Barry Stoner
This episode features a one on one interview with 79 year old Barry Stoner. We hear what it was like to be a high school track runner in the time of Rodger Bannister, but we also talk about so much more than running. Barry has lived a purposeful and interesting life traveling the US in an airplane that he built himself. What was it like to serve in a missile base, build a kayak, bike through the mountains of Colorado, or compete in the early years of triathlon? What was it like to run the Manchester Road Race in the 1960's? How were the Silk City Striders formed? What is it like to swim from Alcatraz to Chrissy Field in the fog. Listen in and hear these stories and more. Ep 55Episode 55: Reverend Run Will Fisher
EWe sit down for a talk with The Revered Run, Will Fisher. Fresh off a finish at Wasatch 100 in Utah, we dissect running and spirituality and when (and if) the two ever meet. We go in-depth into Will's former life as an elite oarsman and how he entered this wacky world of endurance running. Hint: the two are related. Stay tuned! Without giving too much away, since it really is a #special episode, you'll just have to listen. Featuring a few five star reviews and another long-ass reading of the Patreon names, per usual. S2 Ep 5454. Sean Greaney and the Great Outdoors
EThis is a one on one interview with Ultra runner Sean Greaney. Sean grew up in CT and has run extensively in the White Mountains and now lives in Seattle with his wife Sara. He is a true outdoors-man, who just loves playing in the mountains. Sean and I have some history as we have traveled a few hundred miles together on the trails, including the CUT 112 in 2018. Sean has a special way of describing Western States, Angeles Crest, the Cut112 and high altitude mountain skiing that really makes you feel like you are there. S2 Ep 53Episode 53: An Eastern View of Western States
EDisclaimer: Art wrote the title for the podcast this week, I have nothing to do with it. Wanted to name it "Lottery Season: It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Statesmas" or "A Decade (Almost!) Under the Influence" but here we are. My view of Western States is very much a western view, allegedly. Let's get into TACOS! That's right, it was the 2nd Annual Taco Trials, a stupid thing to do but probably the highest finish I had all year. We talk other podcasts, chickens, White House petitions, athletic supporters, all that jazz. A few brave souls threw down on the karaoke machine, it was dope. Hashtag: special episode. Hashtag: baby come back. Oh and Western States. Lot of Western States lore, someone got in the lottery. HOLY SHIT. Then we talk crap on some website's gift guide (from 2018) and some other random shit, it's worth it y'all. S2 Ep 52Ep. 52: Fall Fling 400 with Stacey Clark
EHey gang, how's it been? We've had a busy few weeks and we're ahead of the curve in terms of providing you with excellent, up-to-date ultra coverage here in New England and beyond... actually I don't know if that's true and I don't care because we got a ton of phone calls to the CULTRA Karaoke line last week! Party in the USA my dudes and dudettes! In all seriousness, no. We are never serious. But we have a podcast and it has our old pal Stacey (not that Staci) visiting from Colorado and we talk about things like her run down in Moab recently and gratitude and running in ankle deep mud and pooping above treeline and speakerboobs and ICE ICE BABY (too cold), you do not want to miss this one, it's #special. S2 Ep 51Episode 51: 37 Year Streaker Fred Murolo
EHappy Thanksgiving, CULTRA Fans! Have we got a show for you- featuring Fred Murolo, finisher of 39 hundos as well as having an epic run streak of almost 38 years. Fred sits down for a candid talk of what can go right during a race as well as what goes wrong and how to overcome that. Becky recaps her run at the Steep Rock half marathon and we review last week's episode about mental health. Art retells his story of the NJ One Day and we jackass around a bit. Then Fred- what an amazing story. I don't want to give too much away, but if you want to hear some great stories about a guy that's been doing this running thing since the days of Billy Rodgers, check this one out. S2 Ep 50Episode 50 One Day with Rachel Belmont
EEpisode 50: One Day with Rachel Belmont Some people run to be the fastest. Some run to see how far they can go. Others run to heal themselves, or to help serve others. Rachel Belmont is a young athlete who has run for all of these reasons. From running sub 5 minute miles, to running 100 miles, her adventurous spirit has taken her to many exciting places. During this episode Rachel talks one on one with Art about what it was like to be a High School Cross Country Champion, and what it was like to deal with serious running injuries. Rachel also shares how she recently won the One Day 24 Hour Race in NJ. We also learn about the many charitable organizations that Rachel has supported. Listen in to this episode to hear more! S2 Ep 49Episode 49: Miles for Mental Health
EMr. Trailmixer himself Michael LoPresti sits down with the crew tonight as Evil Becky takes over the hosting reigns from Art F&%*ing Byram and we dive deep into 2019's hot button issue, mental health. We go over topics like rates of access, availability of services and how Michael and some friends ran across the entire state of Connecticut to not only fundraise but to raise more awareness for the need for better mental health services and to promote recovery for people with mental health conditions. This episode is less witty banter and silly shit-talking and more to educate the community about the importance of mental wellness as well as to combat discrimination resulting from a mental health diagnosis. Don't worry, we still get "as raw as the trails we run on". S2 Ep 48Episode 48: The Pachaug Trail Run Interviews
EThe Crew sits down with RD Jimmy Mac (and CULTRA co-host slash cast member, how convenient) to recount the inaugural Pachaug Trail Runs, as Art keeps him on task (squirrel blinders) by asking pointed questions and demanding pointed answers. We go over the history and conception of the idea for the race and all the associated rigamarole. Hashtag very special episode or nah? Then the interviews! MONKEY SPLICE! Art and special correspondent Kate Gelato get after the winners (most of them) for some answers. Episode 47 Its About Timed Races
EIt's about time we talked about Timed Races. They are a great way to dip your toe into the ultra world or a new distance PR. Evil Becky and AFB offer suggestions on how to set up your gear, what to bring to the race, pacing strategies, bad nutrition advice and what mental games to play to keep you moving! We talk about how to choose a race. Some people are afraid that running in circles would drive them crazy. But every lap is different, and draws you into the experience. Kinda Like Cultra… Somehow we manage to stay on pace and knock this episode out in less than 90 minutes. Ep 46Episode 46: Reagan's Tesla and a MoBimble too
E"If at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again..." is the motto of the week here at CULTRA HQ as we welcome back Regan Fitzgibbons to the podcast, and this one sure doesn't disappoint. Yeah that's right, I quoted Aaliyah right there, but I digress. The crew this week discusses the TARC Ghost Train 100 up in New Hampshire, then Art does something insanely stupid and awesome at the same time (which can be said for basically any accomplishment in ultrarunning, especially ones we forgot to mention AHEM Maggie Guterl at Big's Backyard Ultra HASHTAG WTF CULTRA?) Sorry about that- we got so caught up in our friend's lives that we forget to mention the elites so sue me. Synopsis: Art ran the Mohawk Mountain Marathon on Saturday then turned around and ran the Bimbler's Bluff 50k on Sunday. That's about 60 miles and 10,000 feet of vert over the course of about 33 hours. Hell of a weekend for Mr. Cultra himself. He relives in all of its sickening glory, it's a VERY SPECIAL CULTRA. Jimmy was at Bimbler's too and guess what part of his body got rolled again (hint: rhymes with "cankle"). He did not live up to the audacious claim made a few months ago: to land on the Master's Podium (he was 6th Master, ugh). Clearly he is no one's master, not even his own right ankle. Then Becky recounts the tale of crewing and pacing and encouraging Reagan and her redemption story from her DNF at VT100 in July. She got back on the horse and this time she tamed the beast named Tesla Hertz 100- hear what she did differently, her mental approach, and what it feels like to listen to creepy piano music at 3 am (damn, Becky that is some shiiiiit). Ep 45Episode 45: Manchester Road Race Director Jim Balcome
CULTRA Trail Running Podcast Show Notes Episode 45: Manchester Road Race Director Jim Balcome The Manchester Road Race is an iconic New England Thanksgiving tradition, and draws some of the worlds best elites. For many weekend warriors, it is the only race they run all year. We get a bird's eye view on what it looks like from high above it all from race director Jim Balcome who has been the race director for 43 years. Spoiler Alert: The Manchester Road Race (allegedly) started out as a trail race! Perhaps that is why the community surrounding this event is so strong. Ep 44Episode 44: CULTRA LIVE! We Fail, You Succeed!
EThe second installment of CULTRA Live! from Connecticut Sports and Fitness and Art does a bang up job rallying the troops to talk about our experiences with failure, specifically our big ultra fails. What works? Who cares- this episode is all about what didn't work and maybe we learned something. We deep dive into Eliud Kipchoge's sub-2 stunt and Brigid Kosgei's dominating performance in Chicago and 81-second takedown of the women's world marathon record. We talk about it 4% faster like the SHOES BRO. We talk Tobias Tello's first #hundo finish at Midstate Massive Ultra Trail as well as Reagan Fitzgibbons' first #hundo finish at Tesla Hertz on Long Island. Then we get into the meat of the biscuit and boy, it's a tasty show! We fail so you can succeed. Seriously. We had Ron Locandro come up to the mic and tell a great story and then Ultra Fabio himself tells an amazing anecdote of failure that resonates with everyone. A truly SPECIAL episode (#overused special). Special thanks to Chaz Koch for his amazing work before the show on his form clinic with the CT Trailmixers. Ep 43Episode 43: Yeti 100 with Andy O
EThis week's CULTRA we come back at you with a repeat offender, one Mister Andy O and his dominating run down at YETI 100 two weeks ago. He obliterated his previous 100-mile PR by a good two and a half hours. That's some serious #hundo speed folks. Before that we go into Jimmy's day at the Nipmuck Marathon and preview the upcoming races this weekend: the Midstate Massive in Massachusetts and the Tesla Hertz Run out on Long Island. Ep 42Episode 42: Miller Time
EHey kids, have you ever wondered what it might be like to have your significant other pace and crew you for your first hundred? Buckle up, because this is that episode! We welcome the outstanding former (and/or current) ass-kicking OCR husband and wife team of Geoff and Jamie Miller into the CULTRA Studios to recount their harrowing ordeal of Geoff's first #hundo down at Yeti 100 in Virginia last week. Cue the "it's a very special episode" here and in come the strings and sappy music-- no, actually none of that. The Millers are very matter of fact about what went down and what it took to get Geoff across the line and it's a great tale of triumph over adversity aka why the fuck does anyone do this stupid sport? Ep 41Episode 41: Running Ego
EDo you have an ego? Sure, we all do. But does your ego get you in trouble on the trails ever? I hope so, because then you're going to definitely relate to the crew tonight. Evil Becky, AFB and Jimmy Mac sit down and go deeper than they've ever gone, getting honest, vulnerable and LOOK A SQUIRREL! No seriously, it's a very special CULTRA, I know I say that every episode but damn it, it's just true. We start off discussing the difference between "running" a race and "racing" a race (if you don't know you better ask somebody). We then have a 2+ hour heart to heart talk on ego; how it pumps us up to be the best we can be but also how it can ultimately wreck our shit. S2 Ep 40Episode 40: High Above Wasatch 100 with Jay Mitchell
EHey Cultra Nation! It's always a party in the belly of the beast and Jay Mitchell joins us tonight to talk about racing and training and his interesting childhood as well as taking a helicopter ride down a mountain for some fast new Strava CRs. Art had a really good week (re: insane triathlon training), Becky is back to crushing her runs (re: fully recovered from Notchview finally) and Joe is starting a new streak by making it this week after a rare absence (re: new job). Jimmy is Jimmy (re: boisterous and obnoxious) and #hundojoe wants to fight him per usual, there's so much shit talking tonight and it makes for an uncomfortable moment ON AIR. Allegedly. We dive deep into embarrassing moments at trail races, Becky gives gifts (re: candy) and we have a heart to heart talk about the roots of Canadian Trail Fishing. You. Do. Not. Want. To. Miss. This. Episode 39: Cultra Crewed Family Feud
What up fam? This episode gon' be LIT. #hundojoe misses his first show and we were sad but immediately got over it because LOOK A SQUIRREL! Okay first off, we got Gelato in the house. AFB, Jimmy Mac and Evil Becky recap their weeks, talk about the Tunxis Ultra results (maybe we go off on a tangent re: Ray Crothers). Congrats to all the finishers at Tunxis tho. We dive into how we choose races then Art can not let it go about LSE's FKT fest all over New England's face. Then we go off on a game of CULTRA CREWED FAMILY FEUD. Evil B was the dopest MC and we answered a shit ton of questions. Guess who won? Stay tuned my dudes. Jimmy then makes a bold claim about the Q Trail and by now you hopefully know how that turned out (add hot to garbage and stir to create a fine shit show). Peace out bitches. Episode 38: FKT Bad Boy LSE
ETonight we sit down with a repeat offender; one Lee-Stuart Evans, he of the "I Broke the FKT Site" fame. Lee explains in detail his New England Trail fastest known time (FKT for those in the back, seriously pay attention) and gives a lot of cracking advice on just how to set these records, and why after two days of hiking and running the planned crossing of the Connecticut River with a makeshift raft was probably going to be a bad idea. We dive deep into what makes a legitimate FKT- with little to no resolution; possibly an amendment passed to agree to disagree? We then surprise the Legend Himself #hundojoe with a rainbow ice cream cake for his 40th birthday. Art goes water skiing, Becky reads the best fan mail we ever got on-air and Jimmy reports that he ran the New Haven 20k without projectile vomiting this year. "A Very Special CULTRA" might be over-used at this point, but it's a special one. Ep 37Episode 37: Beast of Byrneden 100
EMichael Byrne is an ultrarunner and he started his ultra career swinging for the fences, and he recounts it all in gory detail. Hear how he ended up on tonight's show (hint: Christina Chin-Hing may be involved. Hint to the hint: she's on the SHOW TONIGHT, oh wow my third favorite triathlete!) and what amazing things he has tried and done. We get sidetracked numerous times by Jimmy's severe ADHD and he even saw a bear! Art is a full-time triathlete now, he keeps doing massive swim workouts and I'm pretty sure this time next year this podcast will be completely tri-specific. "Allegedly" Canadian Trail Fishing Magazine was just bought by Ironperson(tm) so that's gone as well, what a great mag, going to be turned into North American Trail Fishing, Shooting and Undergarments Monthly, so yeah. Wait, was I talking about? Oh yeah, HUNDO JOE is here again- he's like Cal Ripken (never misses a show). S2 Ep 36Episode 36 Ultra Fabio Brian Nephew
EShow Notes: Once again, the CULTRA Crew members (aka slackers) BRoc and Jimmy Mac are M.I.A., which means all sense of normalcy is gone and we're left to our own devices. So, what should we do? Argue about race management and the future of ultra running? Nah, so yesterday. Discuss Joe's naked hiking adventures? Well, it wouldn't be a podcast if we didn't at least mention it. Ridicule and shame our absent crew members? Of course! But what else? Could this be the episode where someone actually accepts our "Hundo for A Hundo" challenge and donates $100 for a dinner with #HundoJoe? Or is this just another episode where Art rambles on about the evil MDot empire, Becky laughs incessantly while making random evil comments and Joe reminds everyone that we don't know what the f*** we're talking about? It could be all of that and so much more…as in "Ultra Fabio" more! Yes! Tonight, we meet up with Brian Nephew aka "Ultra Fabio". This super dad and co-owner of Connecticut Sports and Fitness is a true jack of all trades, who proves that it's not all about natural talent but the ability to work hard and never give up. Brian talks about growing up in a small town where perseverance and dedication were traits his parents instilled at an early age. Through humorous stories about his early years on the football field and basketball court to obstacle course racing, intense weight training and now ultra-running, Brian reminds us about the importance of the journey and not just the destination. S2 Ep 35Episode 35: Howie Ran For Forty years
EHey Cultra Nation! Have we got a good one for you today, it's a very special episode with the one and only Howie Breinan sitting in with us and his story is amazing. First ultra finish before the age of 10? Check. Several breaks followed by huge comebacks? Check. Triumph over adversity? Check. This show has everything, and the term "hundo" is ubiquitous (as is epic, stout, beta, etc.), Art has an extra helping of potty mouth tonight (and gets called out for it), Jimmy makes a bold, dare I say audacious claim re: his finish at Bimblers, Brian is his usual snarky and witty self and #hundojoe adds to his legendary legend. Episode 34: Self Esteem and Ultra Media
EThis show was not on Strava, yet it still happened. After discussing FKT's and making fun of Jimi Mac and B-Roc, Evil Becky Burke, Highlander, and AFB take a deep dive into Self Esteem and how running impacts our lives. We also look at Ultra social media. Does it make us better runners or just make us depressed? Are ultra runners super heroes, or selfish boors who torture their families in pursuit of the perfect run. Are we more than just our running. Is Ultra running extreme, or is it just a matter of perspective? What would our loved one's say about our running? Lots of questions, perhaps a few answers. Are they the right answers? Episode 33: Cult Rat Rail Running
No guests tonight, just raw unfiltered Cultra Crew right to the dome! Hundo, B-Roc, AFB, Jimmy Mac and Evil Becky deliver one of the worst shows in recent memory. "Arguably our worst show to date" says Art Byram in disgust after the show. "Two thumbs down" says Canadian Trail Fishing Magazine. Look, if you like shows that go off topic a lot, have no point and shit audio, we are the best podcast in North America then. I mean, we're just five people that love laughing at our own jokes, and let me tell you we do that for 94% of the show, and for the other 16% we're basically having technical difficulties. That's right we give 110% every night for you even though that's mathematically impossible. We do manage to go into the age old battle of bladders versus bottles which is promptly derailed when Jimmy gives some really shitty hydration advice. Or maybe it's good, who knows? If there's anything I've ever learned, one size does not fit all in this sport. "Am I the only one who likes the irreverent shows with just us?" asks Brian Roccapriore, to which Becky Burke replied "I like the episodes with just us too but yes it was all over the place" so there people. Episode 32: Different Views of Vermont 100
The Vermont 100 mile endurance race was Hot. We take a look at the race through the eyes of a fine tuned grand slammer, a 16 time grouchy veteran grinder (#RIPNIPSEYHUSTLE), a gutsy first timer, and an Evil Crew/Volunteer. Each bring their own perspective to a very challenging day. We discuss all of the tricks that they used on the trails on a day where more than half the field had to drop. Very interesting stuff, if you like hearing about ultra running, and I suppose you do right? Most people don't go into a bar to drink water. Speaking of bars… If someone leaves a bar and gets a ticket for driving under the influence, who is responsible? The person who choose to drive drunk, or the bartender? What if the person was so drunk that they lost the ability to make a reasonable decision, and the bartender still continued to serve them? We have a heated discussion about the overlapping responsibilities of race management, and race participants, and all feel like drinking by the end… Connecticut Sports and Fitness: https://connecticutsportsandfitness.com/ Vermont 100: https://vermont100.com/ Please support Cultra Trail Running Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CultraTrailRunning Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/CULTRA Twitter: https://twitter.com/blueblazerunner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cultratrailrunning/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CultraTrailRunning/ Call the Karaoke Line at 203-DOG GENT Intro Guitar by Nick, Vocals Jack Byram, and beats Jack Sevigny beatstars.com/sev_beats

Episode 31: Notchview Ultra Extravaganza with Andy O!
Andy O is a man from Earth. He runs ultras. Occasionally he wins them. He is a quality human being. He makes bread and pretzels and beer for fun. Sometimes he gives those things to people to eat and drink. More people should be like Andy O. Andy has known Brian for over two decades. They allegedly have hidden bodies together. Not because they both have Italian last names and allegedly have mob ties (I said "allegedly" you lawyer POS) but because that's what you do for your best friends. I'd hide a body for anyone, mostly because when it's time to cash in that favor, that's a big one. Not like "help me move my couch" type of favor, I'm talking serious shit, like help ME hide a body. Also #hundojoe is running his 3,000th Vermont 100 this weekend, and after the show him and Kate #gelato went up to NH to do a Pemi Loop. I think they were jealous because Art did one with the Mixers over the past weekend, and he sounds like he's getting his mojo back. We do a quick VT100 preview, sorry not sorry if I left your name off the pod, like half of New England is up there running that thing on Saturday so gimme a break #nellcarter. Also Jimmy drank seven Slurpees last week and lived to tell the tale, he also may have thrown up gang signs by accident in New Britain. Show is fire (insert fire emoji here). Episode 30: Ottoman to 50k Cultra LIVE!
This week we did our first ever Cultra LIVE at Connecticut Sports and Fitness in Glastonbury- yes that's right a LIVE studio audience sat in to listen and ask pointed questions about pooping in the woods, how to safely add more miles to get up off the Ottoman and up to that bigger distance (like the #HUNDO), what things can go wrong during an ultra and how to overcome that, THE MENTAL SIDE OF ULTRAS, maybe people even got up and sang a LIVE karaoke (allegedly)... I'm not saying nothing, you'll just have to listen. Special thanks to Brian Nephew and Chaz Koch for having us and thank you listeners and friends for making the night such a smashing success. Episode 29: Gelato in a Forbidden Forest
Hey gang! We're back with another installment of CULTRA, this time visited by Kate Gelato, ...er Gelineau. Kate comes to us from the OCR world and talks about her first open ultra that she spent teaming up with #hundojoe for 86+ miles at Forbidden Forest. We dive a little into her psyche and background and what it takes to go the distance. Karaoke is back and it's weird AF. Episode 28: Manitou's Revenge with Tom Starodaj
Manitou's Revenge 54 mile run is one of the Nation's toughest races. Join the Cultra Crew as we talk with up and comer Tom Starodaj as he recalls the perils of this race and gives great Beta on Devils Path, in the Catskills. Oh yeah and Evil Becky named the Chicken Stacey, and Highlander hiked naked. OK so these are now pretty awkward show notes, but aren't they always? How about we meet in real life? Episode 26.2: CULTRA Karaoke
This is a compilation of some recent calls to our 203-DOG-GENT Cultra Karaoke Line. Call and sing the song that is stuck in your head during your run. Other than that, unless you want singing lessons, that's all there is in these notes…really. OK stop reading now. Either play the episode, or go for a run or both. Just don't read these stupid show notes because there is absolutely no reason to read further, unless you want singing lessons. You most likely DO need them BTW. S2 Ep 27Episode 27: Running Ragged with Joseph Nuara
Here's that Run Ragged recap we promised- we're visited by the one and only Joe Nuara, 3rd place finisher. Or 2nd to last DNF, whatever. We go deep inside Joe's brain to see what it takes to go hour after hour after hour (29 to be exact) and what the heart of a warrior looks like- Joe gives us a really important "why" to the whole experience. He talks about his 100-mile experience from a few years back, flipping burgers with none other than #hundojoe at the NJ 3-Day. We also learn the ins-and-outs of Obstacle Course Racing life, as Joe is an elite competitor not only at ultras but also at OCRs. We also hear from the RDs perspective as Brian and Stacey not only battled sleep but the real fight- having access to unlimited Oreos and Mountain Dew (allegedly). What is it like to direct Connecticut's premier Last Person Standing event? Find out here. Mad props to woodworking artist extraordinaire Stefan Rodriguez- that winner's trophy is the truth. We vaguely visit BleesterGate and skim over #ultradrama, because who gives a shit? Evil Becky is back and she is hilarious as she informs us that she's all caught up on past CULTRA episodes. Finally we say goodbye to the incomparable Stacey Clark as she readies herself to move to Fort Collins, Colorado next week. It's an action-packed episode you won't want to miss. Episode 26: Worlds End with Bessic and Jara
Hey Cultra Nation! Bessic and Jara are in the studio to talk about the Worlds End 100k held on June 1st in Forksville, PA; and this one does not disappoint. Brian, Becky and Stacey all had little league games / graduations / life to attend to so they were reluctantly granted excused absences to take the night off and of course we still went over two hours. Not only were we joined by the illustrious duo from central CT but we were visited by special guest #hundojoe's daughter Sarah, holder of four USATF records. Unfortunately Jimmy never misses a show, and he's here in all his sickening glory. He might rant a minute or two on trekking poles and their role in the decline of western civilization, but the views expressed herein do not necessarily align with management's views on cheat sticks and the cheating they encourage. I mean Europoles. Whatever, just keep them away from my face. Run Ragged preview? Sure, barely. We'll most likely do a recap special on that awesome race next week, but if you skip this week I'll come to your house and light a bag of dog poo on your doorstep. Or not. Also, not a cult. Episode 25: The CUT112 with Michael Dolan
Mike Dolan is a bad ass; lawyer, former boxer, West Point graduate, 2:45 marathoner, now 100+ mile finisher. Then for whatever reason he decides to accept our invitation to appear on CULTRA and goes and absolutely wrecks that stellar resume. Some people never learn. In all seriousness, we sit down with both Mike and our own Stacey Clark as they talk about how they dominated the CUT112 from start to finish, teaming up early and going the distance and setting a new course record by over six hours. We can't forget everyone's favorite #hundojoe who seemed traumatized by the entire thing but got it done. Art gives a thorough run down of the day's events (and night's and next day's). We literally talk about feet for an hour, probably give bad medical advice again (allegedly) so you won't want to miss this one. We gloss over other races that happened, wonder where Evil Becky is and are easily impressed by yet another Ben Nephew FKT. Episode 24: Outdoor Parasites
OH SNAP! The Crew went deep this week on that *saucy* little magazine article about how we are parasites, ooooooh. But before that Art, Stacey and #hundojoe were buzzing with nervous energy in preparation for the #CUT112, while Becky's gigantic ankle was raring to go at the Cayuga Falls 50 and Jimmy further tries to impress his peers by trying to run the Worlds End 100k. The Crew can't stay on task because they keep laughing at some random shit, and there's a big rundown of races coming up in the next month. CULTRA Karaoke is back and it's just like running threshold pace: comfortably uncomfortable. We dive into a *ton* of new FKTs that went down in CT over the last week, week and a half. Some were fast, some were short, some were *mixed gender*, some were long AF, but there's no denying it: we are on the map, right between NY, MA and that little state with the adorable islands, what's his face? Yeah. Also, we are not a cult. #hundojoe So Hot Right Now: https://fastestknowntime.com/ Our Neighbor to the East: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island The #CUT112 FB Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1900561896825738/ Please support Cultra Trail Running Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CultraTrailRunning Strava: https://www.strava.com/clubs/CULTRA Twitter: https://twitter.com/blueblazerunner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cultratrailrunning/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CultraTrailRunning/ Call the Karaoke Line at 203-DOG GENT Intro Guitar by Nick, Vocals Jack Byram, and beats Jack Sevigny beatstars.com/sev_beats Keywords: Ultra Running, Trail, trails, 100 milers, New England, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, Catskills, Adirondacks, AppalachianTrail, AT, Blue Blaze, Forest, race, woodlands, mountains, FKT, Jersey, trap rock, ridgeline, Cultra Culture
Episode 23: Three Days at the Fair
I have no idea what this episode is about. I think Jordan is on it. Art was murmuring something about "getting this damn Skype thing to work" or some shit, I don't know. Becky and Jimmy couldn't make it because they had important family stuff to do. Anyway, Joe ran a hundo, hundo and a half (168 miles to be exact). Brian was there and no doubt had a lot of interesting shit to say, 97% of it was pronounced correctly. Stacey is awesome and we'll miss her. I'm sure Art probably laments his decision to do 39 miles of the Appalachian Trail, which is still insanely bad ass but he'll probably beat himself up for not going 52 miles. Did I mention Joe ran for like 72 hours straight, only stopping for beer and candy and like a 10-minute nap? Such bad asses over here. If Jordan was on the show, and I bet she was, she's a bad ass too- she now fights rattlesnakes every morning in the desert and then fights bad guys the rest of the day. Art for some reason lost count of the episode number, this is not 24 it's 23. Allegedly. The Time We Surprised Stacey
The Crew is at it again, this time surprising our own Stacey Clark with an in-depth interview into why she's so awesome, and why on Earth an elite ultrarunner like her slums it with us slow old dudes. The other elite female in our crew, Becky, was AWOL so Jimmy was lifted up from the Ottoman of Shame onto the Elite Loveseat, mostly just to clumsily bump the microphone like eight times. Stacey shares with us what drives and motivates her as well as her future plans. We also talk about all the hi-jinks at the past weekend's Blue 2 Blue Challenge, including how both Hundo Joe and Brian saved a few lives, human AND canine. Hundo Joe gears up to run for 72 hours around a one-mile loop down in New Jersey, possibly earning another HUNDO in his name. Art went running in a quarry in Vermont as he gears up to tackle the CT section of the Appalachian Trail this coming weekend and prays to not die at the #CUT112. The Battle of Mattabesett comes to a somewhat satisfying conclusion as Art and Brian coordinated adorable matching vests emblazoned with the CFPA logo and finally the CULTRA Karaoke line triumphantly returns to the pod, you won't want to miss this one! S2 Ep 21Episode 21: The Spring Fling Just Flung Some Mud in Your Eye!
In this very special episode the Crew is joined by the winners of the very wet and muddy Spring Fling 600, Koby Nelson and Evil Becky Burke. We go over all the relevant details including how much mud there was, how muddy their feet got, what's it like running in mud? Also what's the actual composition of mud? Is it a liquid or a gel? (It's a colloidal!) as well as other science-based "stuff". We go deep into their brains to find out what makes a champion. We also petition the White House (allegedly) to get Becky on Strava to find out how the hell she trains to be so dominant as well as trying on several new nicknames for Hundo Joe Laskey, and a stout old school shoutout to Art's old blog and his days living in Studville, right near Colonoscopyland. Also, we're not a Cult, except we are. But we're really not. But you can't leave, so there's that. S2 Ep 20Episode 20: The Hoppin' Jack Bristol Airline Catskills Spring Classic of 2019 (not) Sponsored by Desitin
This episode the Crew is pared down to just Art, Stacey, Joe and Jimmy as they discuss their recent adventures including Art's Hoppin' Hodges 50k (1st place overall!) and running 54 miles overnight on the Airline Trail with Stacey and Shan Riggs, as well as a recounting of Stacey, Jimmy and sometimes cast member Brian's trip to the Catskills where things go (hilariously) wrong, but oh so right. We run down the weekend of races at Lake Waramaug 50k/50-mile/100k and the TARC Spring Classic Marathon/50k. Includes a heartbreaking story of a young man's desire to achieve ultrarunning stardom through a brand sponsorship deal that somehow falls through at the last minute. S2 Ep 16Episode 16: New Players and a Monkey Makeover
Welcome New Cultra Crew Members Evil Becky Burke, and James McCaffrey AKA Jimmy Mack! We had so much fun with them as guests that we had to have them aboard. They also do a lot of cool shit all the time, so the stories just flow. Actually it was the monkey's call…. We are very excited to start this second season of Cultra and hope you are enjoying this as much as we are. It is our goal to share some laughs with you, and at the same time learn from each other about how to be better runners and people. We are all exploring and testing the limits of our bodies minds and spirits. We look to find new trails, friends, and to learn more about ourselves. In this episode Evil Becky shares her race details of the Trail Animals Race, To Hale and Back 6 Hour. Gotta love TARC! We also take a look at what it means to identify yourself as an Ultra Runner, and how we view ourselves impacts our lives. Then we share some awesome Cultra Karaoke talent, and learn some cool ultra running things by playing Cutramatic, our high pressure, insanely informative yet not usually boring except when we get involved in extra details that have nothing to do with what we actually wanted to say, but we ended up taking about them anyway… Since it's a new Season, we figured it was time to shake up the monkey tree, and get a new intro. Special thanks to my boys Nick and Jack Byram for providing the Guitar and Vocals, and to family friend Jack Sevigny for mixing it all together and giving it a beat. If you are looking to have your own intro put together we will be adding a link to our site shortly so they can help you out too.
