E

Alex McDaniel is the founder of the West Rock Ramblers, West Coast transplant, and a three time Western States finisher. S3 Ep 9999: A Vote for Pachaug

E

"Sorry Jimmy I got nothing" is the message Art Byram sent over to me with the draft of this show, as far as the title of the show is concerned. I actually like it- we're all still sitting here in limbo waiting for the 2020 Presidential election results so it's fitting, really captures the zeitgeist. We recap the Pachaug Trail Runs, thrown by yours truly and we hear how Becky and guest Amy Sorensen both podium'd at the marathon distance while Art had an epiphany of sorts out on the trails. Fred is still streaking and while he may have missed Pachaug he was with us in spirit. We announce the launch of our merchandising operations, Cultra Clothes and look forward to seeing you paddle along with us! Cultra Clothes Pachaug Results Where is Shan Riggs? S3 Ep 9898: 19 Dirty Trail Running Tips

E

Ah, Runners World- you kill me. Listen I get it, you want people to read you, take it all in, see the hundreds of advertisements and then instantly forget that they ever read you. I get it. I really do. It's just that we need more from you, if you're going to be the voice of our sport, we need more. Okay whatever. S3 Ep 9797: Finn Melanson and The Hundred Mile Wilderness FKT

E

Finn Melanson grew up in New England but truly, he's a man of the world. A restless soul in the best possible way, young Finn's spirit is too large to be confined or defined by geographical boundaries. In this episode we crack Finn open- nay, he cracks US open and we get down to the heart of the matter; what it is that makes us who we are and why the idea of "balance" is overrated. One of my favorites to record- it's truly a gem of a podcast and the knowledge and banter therein makes it sound like the Crew plus Finn are old friends out for a run, quickly bonding over their love for a sport that is equally amazing and absurd. S3 Ep 9696: Six Days of Diarrhea

E

Art picks the names of the episodes but I write the show notes. Art said "hey how's this name?" in reference to the title and I said "I like this other name" in reference to the alternate title and Fred chimed in with "How to Get Into Brown?" which works really well too and I thought we may have reached an impasse but alas, Art sent me the draft with his title so I lose yet again. But I have to tell you that I came back with "What Can Brown Do For You?" and we all heartily chuckled again but there's been radio silence ever since and now I can't help thinking that I offended them and they hate me. E

Robert Jason Jeffers gives us exclusive expert information on Pop-Tarts, and how they can help you get the calories you need and deserve. There is a Pop-tart Test and Robert Aces it! He tells us his origin story and we have many laughs with AFB and Evil Becky. Art and Robert also share their first hand experience of what it was like to be in downtown lower Manhattan on the morning of 9/11, and how this relates to our current situation with Covid 19. S3 Ep 9494: First Time 100-Miler Gelato

E

It was supposed to be a triple half marathon. 39 miles for a 39th birthday they said. They said they'd have gelato along the way. But someone had to go and turn it into a 100-miler. Hear all the details of how Gelato (who the fuck is Kate?) ran 100 miles with Bill DUMBASS Odendahl as they were supported by a cast of characters and friends to get Gelato's first 100 done. E

Liz Allen and Rick O'Toole are trail runners. They recently ran Live Loud Running's Six Hours at the Reservoir race in Ansonia, CT. The both won their respective races and had fun doing it. Listen to what makes a champion. Becky shows up late for an awkward and fun time, Fred is still streaking and Art is befuddled by Jimmy's jackassing. That's basically every episode though. S3 Ep 1414 Cultra Personalities with Mike Cook

E

Phat Phred Mulrolo and AFB sit down to talk with Mike Cook. Mike proceeds to tell us the history of the ancient world, and we bond sharing stories of digging up bones, tools and Peruvian outhouses. Somehow all stories involve poop. Mike got a first class tune up from Coach Steve LaBranche, helping him prepare for a 100k. Was it the workouts or did Sandwiches somehow enter the plan? S3 Ep 1313 Cultra Personalities KevIn Dames

E

Kevin Dames went to Fresno State as an Exercise Major, then moved to Colorado to get his PhD in bio mechanics. He now teaches others about how humans move and why they move that way, as well as applied statistics and research methods. He now lives in Cortlandt New York and allegedly occasionally hangs with Ian Golden and crosses paths with Ellie Pell. Translation: he is a cool dude. We talk apples, running, Ithica, running gate, and science. Plus what its like to run when you know the science behind your bonk. S3 Ep 8888: Cindy Sullivan GVRAT and Dodging Caffeine Bullets

E

When Cindy Sullivan was in middle school, she was forbidden to run- she had a degenerative genetic knee condition that got her out of gym class and physical activity. Fast forward about 20 years and Cindy decides she's going to run for the most selfless of reasons- to inspire her then three year old son. After running her first trail race (Nipmuck South), she graduated to ultra (Steep Rock 50k) and the rest they say, is history. Cindy has since gone on to run 50-milers, 100ks and 100 milers as well as multi-day events. We sit down with Cindy to hear about training with her dog Mellie (who also ran across Tennessee this summer) and how she manages to rack up some serious miles. S3 Ep 8787: Four Dumbass Ways to Run The QT 104

E

We talk race strategy, hydration, nutrition, equipment and mental toughness as we recount our recent efforts at running 104 Dumbass Miles on the Pequonnock River Trail in lovely Trumbull, CT. No monkeys were harmed during the recording of this podcast. Special shout-outs to Chip Howard, Mike Crutchley, Sally Campbell, Michelle O'Neill, Jason Roberts, Jay Durand and Tek Ung for making the day (and night) a super rad one. We missed Becky something fierce but there's no shortage of awkwardness as Jimmy, Fred, Art and special guest Bill Odendahl get down and dirty talking about their recent run at the DUMBASS (Delirious Ultra Marathon Bitches And Serious Shitheads) Trumbull QT 104. This guy (Jimmy) had an absolute blast, even though I still haven't figured out what the QT stands for (allegedly). On a good note: there were no arrests. I'm pretty sure I said "I'll put it in the show notes" but now I can't remember what it was supposed to be... S3 Ep 8383: Summit to Sea FKT with the Livingstons

Debbie and Scott Livingston are one of the North East's power ultra running couples. This episode tells the story of how they met at the Vermont 50 Mountain Bike Race and Ultra Run, and how they have built a life of adventures together. Debbie and Scott have been knocking off FKTs and seeking adventures for years. Their most recent adventure was a 242 mile journey on the New England Trail from Mount Monadnock NH, to the Long Island Sound in Guilford CT. We cover many of the details of this journey, from the preparation of equipment, to harrowing river crossings, to the extreme mental and physical challenges they endured. We hear stories of joyful sunrises, meetings with friends, and the true appreciation of the basic necessities of life, like sleep and water. Alex Cabrera is a tough man, having grown up in the Dominican Republic, Serving in the US Army, and training on the trails of New Hampshire. Alex shares what it was like to pursue a finish at the CUT112 facing off against heat, humidity and the relentless traprock trails. All this is fueled by a positive attitude and love for his family. E

Here her stories of racing at Across the Years, the Pistol in Tennessee, what it's like to run 875 miles in a single month(!) and some amazing performances at the NJ Three Days at the Fair. S3 Ep 8080: Dave "Worlds End" Walker

E

Dave Walker puts on some of the hardest races in the USA, from the tough as nails Worlds End Ultramarathon to the gnarly Black Forest 100k as well as serving as the RD of Eastern States 100 from 2017-19, he's no stranger to adversity both on the trails and off. Hear how Dave discovered running, going from a 5k up to the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Ultra in the span of under a year. Dave served his country in Iraq as a combat demolition engineer, has bowled a pretty high score on the lanes and is the father to three girls. We had a great time talking to Dave before we jackassed around and jumped from topic to topic like the CULTRA Squirrel. We talk the CUT112- Andy O set a new FKT which stood for an entire 20 hours when Sean Meehan went out the next day and ran 30:14. Then the combo of Mary-Louise Timmermans and Jamie Miller hammered the Menunkatunk FKT- CT still going crazy! Enjoy this episode, we did! S3 Ep 7979: A Conversation on Race: We've Got to Do Better

E

Hi everybody! A lot has been happening in the world lately and on this episode we try to balance our patented CULTRA jackassing with an appropriate and much needed conversation about race, privilege and what it means to be an ally. Jimmy runs 100 miles for no reason at all, Fred finishes his Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee, Becky is all heart and Art is the head. We form like Voltron to come together to discuss recent events and the consensus is "we need to do better" as a society (looking at you here, white people). We decided before the show that if you are uncomfortable with conversations about race, you are probably racist. If you want to fight us on this, please stop listening to us. We don't want you, we don't need you. Go work on your shit and get back to us when you're ready. Yes, our conversation is awkward and messy and imperfect and we're trying really hard to be a part of the positive changes taking place and are trying to make changes within ourselves to confront systemic and institutionalized racism. We also read some recent 5-star Reviews and discuss FKTs and upcoming plans for the summer. We allegedly open a can of worms re: Run Bum, we learn about chipmunk safety, Jimmy sends a listener a box of Pop Tarts in the mail and Fred has put down a serious amount of miles lately. E

Fan favorite and Patreon extraordinaire lead-off hitter Albertstar Galactica aka Albert Galatan and his more talented wife Dr. Ilana Slaff sit down with the crew from their home in Queens as we explore the needs of special learners and exceptional behavioral challenges posed by people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Slaff is a highly decorated and accomplished MD, author and educator as well as a damn fine runner in her own right, landing on the age group podium at the USATF 50k Road Championships earlier this year. Albert is a lawyer by day and also dabbles in the marathons and ultras which tells me that it's okay to have a really good job and still make terrible life decisions. The crew announces the weekly winner of the Social Distance Challenge and we call out one of our favorite listeners and name our newest challenge after him. S3 Ep 7373: Ellie Pell

E

Hey Cultra fam- guess what? We got Stacey back! For a few minutes tonight at least- but she'll be checking in with us a lot coming up since Art decided to send her a good microphone and good headphones, so she's really back. She checks in from Colorado to re-introduce herself. Then Fred recounts each and every day of his 14,000 day running streak... not quite, but that is rad AF. We holler at our Week 6 Cultra Social Distance Challengers, Jimmy doesn't participate in the challenge because he ran 100 miles last week. Actually 100.2, but get in the canoe. FKT scene still hot, don't get burned yo. Then our first elite guest ever checks in and Becky manages to ratchet down the awkwardness to ask some pointed and relevant questions. We love you Becky. Ellie has a great message and great vibe, stay for her story- highlights include racing in the Olympic Trials, a podium spot at JFK50 as well as talking about her own podcast "Hamstrings and Heartstrings" with some really wonderful anecdotes and her love for the Ithaca running community. Also, the show notes are written by Jimmy. Art does not have this knack for flowery prose or devastating witticisms, and he also thought Ithaca is spelled "Ithica" - I mean WTF? S3 Ep 7272: Spanking the Monkey

E

Episode 72? Welp, the shit starts getting really real at mile 72, so you better get up outta that chair and hang on! New Social Distance Challenge? Check! This one is all about…you'll have to listen. Speaking of listening, we love our Patreon supporters, even the ones that don't listen- what are we talking about? Fucking LISTEN! We dive deep into a lot of topics but most importantly we ask "what can the community do to help each other right now?" Below you will see a lot of links to shoe stores, race companies and businesses we feel could use your help during this global pandemic. If you're not able to buy anything consider a donation to one of them. I know us humans are mostly shitty animals; we can't smell as well as beagles, we can't see as well as eagles (that rhymes my dudes), we can't swim like dolphins or fly like hawks but dammit- we got to be the dominant species on this planet because of our ability to band the fuck together and cooperate. Let's show our love to this community and support the ones that may be hurting right now. Also us extroverts are struggling right now because we like y'all and really miss high fives and hugs and group runs. S3 Ep 7171: Runamuck with Jonathan Vass

E

CULTRA is back in the studio, well the quarantine studio. Which is actually our various living areas and bedrooms and stuff, so yeah. We get down an dirty with VT race director extraordinaire Jonathan Vass and he gives us some unique takes on his outdoor events as well as his background in endurance sports. We do our Patreon shtick, Becky's insane strength Social Distance Challenge, Art does the 2nd Annual Hoppin' Hodges 50k and sets a new course record in the process. Speaking of course records, Jimmy goes ham on the Q Trail and snags himself another FKT. Fred hasn't missed a day in almost 14,000 days and Becky is the best thing about the show and we all know it. We give love to all of the CT and New England folks going nuts on the FKT site as well. S3 Ep 7070: Canadian Trail Fishing with Jeff Grant

E

We have local speedster Jeff Grant (and his even faster wife Mary-Louise Timmermans) checking in with us via Zoom to talk about all the FKTs they've bagged recently plus Becky getting awkward, yes- Fred's still running every day and Art being Art. Jimmy says something mildly controversial, starts a fire with his words. It's largely a Patreon shout out episode, takes us literally an hour to get through that and we announce the winner of the Week Three CULTRA Social Distance Challenge (it's Koby Nelson). We dive deep into the Quarantine Backyard Ultra and the results, Mike Wardian rules. We find out Michael J. Fox, like Jeff and ML, is actually CANADIAN. Travesty. Make America Canada Again. Jimmy reveals a possible FKT attempt he's going for this weekend and then we interview Jeff about his interesting life and how running fits into that. S3 Ep 6969: Raising Unawareness

E

CULTRA Trail Running Podcast is completely out there in the ether my people, since we can't meet in person we're meeting in the virtual space. So we wax poetic on the state of affairs- Western States 100 is cancelled, so that's cool. Jimmy has been waiting eight years so what's another? Maybe we make it a cool decade- if you people can't stay the F inside and get the hell away from each other we can't have nice things, like races... anytime soon. Agenda: we talk about the Social Distance Vert Challenge, our weird weeks (Becky's was the weirdest), Mike Ortiz's living room 100 miler in an NYC apartment and Becky wants to know what kind of runner are you today? S3 Ep 6868: Running Virtually Self Supported

E

Socially distanced but not anti-social! We are legion, for we are many... just stay the fuck six feet away. Postponed events? Yes, us too. We commiserate but stay optimistic. Art says we sound tinny but the hipsters among us will say it's "lo-fi indie" like our early stuff before we signed to a major label. We talk virtual races, FKT attempts and how to self-support for your next big attempt because we don't see any races happening anytime soon so start sharpening up the skills for the long stupid shit, gang. A few karaoke jams are thrown down, so let's hear some more 203-DOG GENT calls, people. We reveal the results of the CULTRA Strava Social Distance Challenge (some of you fuckers are using that other shit, "cool" I guess). S3 Ep 6767: Social Distance Challenge

E

Times they are a changing, but the trails are still there. The Cultra Crew gets together, well not exactly together, as we practice social distancing in the studio. Then Becky comes up with several Cultrivia questions for Fred. Do you know the answers? We also announce our new weekly contest, The Cultra Social Distance Challenge! Post up a run on the Cultra Fan Page, and tag in on Strava (if you want) and you have the chance to win a really cool Ragged Cuts award, plus we will possibly make fun of you on the episode. Win Win! S3 Ep 6666: Joshua Stevens Elite Human

Stacey Clark takes over from Colorado and does a one on one interview with Joshua Stevens. Joshua shares the very raw and real story of his life, which involved the special forces, injury, addiction, and a love for animals and nature. Having lived through these struggles, Joshua has a new, deep, and profound appreciation for life, which has now led him to many Ultra runs including VT100, Leadville, and Badwater 135. Joshua Stevens now makes his living from Ultra Running and we are glad to have him as a guest.

S3 Ep 6565: Shan Riggs Plans Big

E

This week's episode finds the crew sitting down with Glastonbury's Shan Riggs, fresh off a stunning 15-hour 100-mile performance in the desert of Las Vegas. What makes Shan go? The crew asks pointed questions and receives pointed answers. They also all deep dive into the coronavirus and its impact on running events around the world. Some mild 4% talk of course and a touch of random Becky awkwardness.
