S3 Ep 145145: Toughest Trail Races in the Northeast
ECultra coming in HOT this week! We deep dive into the Northeast's toughest trail races (link below) with a huge thanks to Ian Golden for his tireless efforts not only compiling this list but all he does for Northeast trail running in general. Dude is the man! This episode can be filed under "Classic Jackassing". Would love to reiterate for the people in the back, and the people in the way back that this is not a "crew show" or a "gang show". I mean, having more than two people on a podcast was not invented in the upper Midwest, I mean- Trail Runner Nation had been doing that for a few years before anyone ran double digit junk miles. But ok, let's talk about that... I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything will look like a nail. It's a podcast, it's not pie. Meaning, everyone can get a slice- the pie is infinite. Imagine if we started intimidating our listeners with chants of "you're dead to me" when they put on an episode of The Adventure Jogger. Weird flex, but you do you. Everyone needs an enemy I guess, real or imagined. Okay enough of that shit. S3 Ep 142142: The CUT 112 with Amy Hanlon and Howie Breinan
EPerseverance, dedication, fitness. That's what it takes to win the CUT 112, New England's most exclusive endurance event. There's a reason the vetting process for this is so tough; this is the race that eats its young but them spits them out on the side of the trail and has literally people curled up into a fetal position in a semi-catatonic state whimpering "mommy mommy mommy". Hear how Howie put on a masterclass in not only heat mitigation techniques but aid station efficiency and near perfect pacing to overcome this monster of a race. What is it like to deal with the hardships of technical stone dust, or getting stalked by a cat at night as it prepares to pounce. E"Sorry, my brain is broken. Any idea what to call this one?" inquired one Art Byram, the Poet Laureate of Connecticut Ultrarunners and Trail Mavens Alike. We literally had like no real content. We riffed on the following: yellow-eyed Sith lords; how much we miss each other; a bunch of CUT112 shit; the complete and utter idiocy of VERTICAL MADNESS; Jimmy's fluid sexuality; Art, Becky, Reagan and Amy's run around everywhere; the Second Colcherster Half in 2021; Jimmy reads a letter from Bacon Academy; to mask or not to mask when running? S3 Ep 124124: Original Cultra Reunion
EIn late 2018 Cultra was a select group of ultra runners, sworn to secrecy and bound by the belief that one should pursue the perfect trail run adventure, and worry about the consequences later. In a misguided attempt to drop out of the civilized world, the five gathered weekly to share their tales, of all the fun shit that happens on the trails that most normal people don't care about, This is a reunion of the original Cultra five, Stacey Clark, Jordan Grande, Brian Roccapriore, Joe Laskey, and Art Byram. ENew Jersey is not known for its trails, but we're hoping that changes soon- and if Sassquad Trail Runners' Kim Levinsky has anything to say about that, then it changes today! Kim has a competitive background as a two-sport athlete collegiately and brings her passion over to the trails and infuses that into every Sassquad Trail Party. Hear about how her love for the trails has helped a small group grow into one of the biggest and best on the east coast and has rightfully put Jersey on the map as a trail running destination. S3 Ep 118118: North South Trail FKT 78 Miles in the Snow
EHow does it feel to be outside in the middle of winter in New England for over 40 hours, unsupported on 78 miles of snowy trail? Jimmy Mac teamed up with LSE to take on this trail in the worst conditions. Sure they could have tried it without the snow, sleet and driving rain. They could have had someone wiping their arses every few kelo-meeters too. But you always gotta consider the "Why". There will definitely be faster FKT's set on this route, but one would have to try really hard to match the experience of doing it under these conditions. It is a tale of hard fought Finishing Lines, not Finishing Times. Anyway this Episode is a RIUT! EThis summer Portland's Liz Anjos set out to run and hike the Appalachian Trail faster than anyone else in history, and having had a blazing fast 2:51 marathon PR plus several other notable FKTs, she not only had the pedigree but the right attitude. Enlisting the help of one Warren Doyle (9 thru-hikes, 9 section hikes of the AT and counting) she had the right people in her corner. S3 Ep 109109 The Time We Interviewed 2020
ESpoiler Alert: We announce that there will be a big announcement at the end of the episode. The Crew, minus Fred do a hatchet job interview of the often maligned and tormented year of 2020. The pariah of social media and the target of many a meme shares what it was like in the early year, starting with so much promise, before acting out and drawing universal fire from gallows humor pundits around the world. Evil Becky, (or was it Vicki) even asks the tough questions digging deep into 2020's Origin Story. Ultimately we put some lipstick on this pig of a guest, prop it up in the corner, and accept that we can not change past events, but with lessons learned, only look forward to our next guest, to be played by Jimmy Mac in a future episode. Evil Becky (or was it Vicki?) and Art recount every step of their 8 hours of running on the stoopid roads around Wesleyan University, and tell everyone how grateful they are to be able to spend time with their excellent friends Reagan and Simon (for President). S3 Ep 108108: Snow Running Traction Tips with Brian V
EHappy Holidays Cultra! It's a classic episode in the making- Vicki in her bathrobe with a 16 pound Ironman medal around her neck, Fred on day 14,237 of his running streak and Art trying to get us to talk about serious things like traction for snow and ice running… all the while Jimmy is jackassing his face off. We have Brian Vanderheiden in studio while he chugs egg nog and eats pizza while walking on his new treadmill- it's really the holiday extravaganza you didn't know you needed but would never live without! EWhat can be said about a podcast episode that clocks in at a svelte two hours and fifty minutes? Meet our newest cast member Vicki as she asks to talk to a grizzly bear's manager, Fred has an altercation with a bobcat, Art is still afraid of chipmunks and Jimmy covers a lot of ground by speaking well over 90 words a minute. S3 Ep 104104: Adam Osmond Running from Gambling
EAdam Osmond is not likely to run Western States anytime soon. As a recovering gambling addict, these days he will not even put his name into a race entry lottery. Instead, Adam has established himself as a fixture of the Northeast running scene and is very active in sharing his experiences with others on social media. However he does not carry a GoPro camera to simply capture the moment, and to share the scenery. Adam has found the trail running scene to be quite welcoming, however as a male African-American runner, he sometimes feels like he will be held to a higher standard than his white running friends, and feels that he must be hypervigilant about not trespassing, and be extra careful wherever he goes. The camera gives him an extra sense of security. We discussed Adam's many adventures in life and on the trails, as well as his quest to run a race in each of Connecticut's 169 towns. EYakkin' it up about jackassin' = that's YACKASSIN' my people. We go full crew sans guest (so no one looks on in horror) as we dissect Becky's day at the Brewery. Hear how she almost bested the field of ladies and how our friend Brian V and his Steep Endurance squad once again put on a safe event during a global pandemic. Fred keeps on running, hitting 4000 miles for the year while us mere mortals are back in the 2000s. Art did a 419 mile bike ride earlier this year. Jimmy ran a self-supported 50-miler over the weekend and had no regrets. We also explore some bad ideas for your Holiday Season- and introduce you to the Kultra Krampus, a "contest" if you will to see who can get the worst present from another Cultra fan; do you have what it takes to be the Krampus this year?
