This year is all about controlling what we can to race and train at our best. With Ironman Arizona yanked away, we look at the emotion racing stirs and how to focus on what matters. We talk about the best ways to approach training and races. We compare cancelled races to post-Ironman blues and look at how to keep our minds in the game. We explain why yellow can be better than green in Training Peaks, the trouble with perfectionism, listening to your body, and why facing fear is the best way to grow. And Coach Robbie preps for Texas 70.3 Topics: The Ironman Arizona Gut Shot Just keep going . . . The mental and physical rigidity of structure Unpredictable days and 30 minute runs Wear out the opponent by taking body shots well Racing and the outlet of freeing yourself Training and stabilizing emotions When it feels insurmountable Evening out the pain with pressure Cancelled Race vs. Ironman Depression. What's worse? When "graduation day" is stripped away What we learned from Chris Nikic We need the excitement Balancing the highs and lows Life as a monk People want "the feeling" of the race Digital "production" doesn't fill our voids The pain of the fall after high expectations Coach Robbie's Excitement/Nerves for Texas 70.3 What truly CHANGES who we are "The Obstacle Is The Way" - Ryan Holiday Taking on new challenges for growth Facing fear is harder when we're passive Channeling Gratitude during a race A great way to start the SWIM in a race Being in the moment with your Race Understanding 100% of 70-80% The trouble with perfectionism personality Hayden calls out coach Robbie for missing a workout Leaving happiness and success on the table When Yellow is Better than Green in Training Peaks Understanding and LISTENING to your body
S1 Ep 425#425 - "Race Ready" for Ironman Changes/New Rules
Today we look at Ironman changes/new racing rules and why they could make you slower if not in the right mindset. The swim set up, transitions, spectators, and maybe most importantly — a pretty big change to run aid stations. We'll look at several ways to make sure you are on top of your mental and physical game in the new Ironman environment. We also get into why cycling in cold is harder and why it's important to be flexible with your nutrition. Topics: The exaggerations of triathletes How long did you "really" ride today? :) The guys didn't sleep much last night Endurance sports and growing as people What we learned from recent Ironman races Lots of races coming up You can never compare a race to a race Some athletes like some race changes Pre-Race meetings now on YouTube Why your times are apt to be a little slower Transition changes and set ups How much should you carry with you on bike and run? A major change in run aid stations Dressing right for the bike Better to be safe than sorry Why it's so hard to bike in the cold Swim start differences at Ironman How to line up for the swim Why your swim preparation and nutrition will be different Wetsuit and Heart Rate increase Swim anxiety How we're spoiled by the volunteers Raising your core temp when it's cold Excess peeing on the bike Why we're so cold when we finish a race Outside assistance and spectators Another argument for mass starts Stacking the odds against swim anxiety How taking your time early pays off later Now, it's better to take more than you'll need ANOTHER reason to hold back on the bike?? Working 2 or 3 aid stations ahead Don't let nutrition get behind Remember to "top off" Finding your GRATITUDE no matter what Don't set yourself up for a bad experience Look at this year's racing as a "free play" --------------- Registration is now open for the C26 Club Training Program. "It was too windy." "Too hot or too cold." "Too many people in my lane." What do you do when facing inconvenience? Today we talk about how to turn training obstacles into racing lessons. We also look at subconscious thoughts and how they can affect our moods. We talk about race goal setting and how it can be good and bad. And finally, give some last minute thoughts on how to race Ironman Florida. Topics: Congrats to everyone about to Race. You've already been rewarded. S1 Ep 421#421 - Everything You Need To Know About Triathlon RUNNING
This is a great guide for RACE RUNNING and how to train for it. We focus on Ironman, but the same holds true for 70.3, Olympics, and Sprints. For one, we want to strengthen our chassis so we don't have to walk. And, if we don't handle the swim and bike right, none of this really matters. It's a pretty deep dive into accumulated fatigue, accumulated fitness, how to know when you're in good shape, and why bricks and your long runs might be disrupting your progress. Topics: Walk/run vs. Run Brick Running Overrated?? Your body doesn't care what's stressing it Running is Running How to practice running on tired legs You don't get extra points for running off the bike *When running off the bike makes sense Why you should run before you ride Don't practice bad running form Run on the "freshest" legs Running off the bike feels weird, but . . . Do you focus on Swim/Bike bricks?? How the swim cascades into your run Energy expenditure at Ironman What your purpose should be on the swim Does your bike feel like a warm up for the run? Ironman doesn't "start" until mile 80 of the bike Or . . . Mile 20 of the run. "I crushed the bike . . ." Bike for Show, Run for Doe There's no such thing as a good bike split followed by a bad run split. Volume Running Do you keep making your long run longer and longer and longer? We have to be consistent with volume You CAN make time for more short runs You shouldn't feel WRECKED from running How we OVER-DAMAGE our body What's wrong with thinking "I have to do the distance" Accumulated Fatigue Accumulated Fitness Don't let the swim crush you before you start Spreading out the Volume How to know when you're getting into good shape Why your long runs might be counterproductive Don't burn your matches in training, wait till races Is "Faster" really the training goal?? S1 Ep 419#419 – Gratitude: The Secret Weapon for Better Training and Racing
There's a time and place for being serious, but most of us tend to train and race better when we're relaxed and coming from a place of gratitude. Today we talk about how to race and train "free." We look at the difference between intensity and focus, and ways to embrace the unknown. Have you ever found your happy place on the run? Can you get off the bike with a fuller tank? Also, what setting A, B, and C goals for your race looks like. Finding a love to explore Why laughter may be the key to your training Does LOL on text really mean you're laughing out loud? Laughter as a mood shifter The impact of our isolation on training When life is hard, people need people Taking ourselves too seriously Drawbacks of perfectionism Lack of nuance in communication Loops of seriousness and training baggage The weight of the world Added intensity means added stress Focus vs. Intensity Do your expectations include being healthy? Perfectly adhering to the plan even if it's misery This is supposed to be something you LOVE Addiction to the outcome of your favorite team What do you WANT right now Stop while you're ahead mentality Today isn't race day Falling in the same traps Taking your perspective seriously Too much internalization with training Days off that turn into months Embracing the unknown Are your goals selling yourself short? Detaching from numbers Would you rather know or not know your race result in advance? Overanalyzing the steps Setting A, B, and C goals for the same race The power in the mystery of not comparing Being committed to loving and doing it . . . What still bugs Robbie about his racing Also, why Robbie is insanely grateful Getting off the bike with a fuller tank Can you find happiness on the run? S1 Ep 404#404 - Own Your Flexibility . . . in Training and Life
The "gray area" of life (and training) is the most confusing. Do you go where you want to go, or look for someone else to tell you the right way? You should try to understand the black & white, but own the gray. How do you feel about skipping a workout? The way to learn is to push the boundaries . . . and remember that everything is connected. As always, we connect training to difficult decisions in life and today, we look at making decisions on the go. Whether it workouts, work, parenting, etc. . . lessons are learned by experience. And accepting that experience. Do you beat yourself up for "Wrong decisions?" It's time to stop doing that, and work through them with people that matter. S1 Ep 389#389 - Athlete Q&A - 26 Answers
Today we cover a lot of ground. Heat and humidity's impact on swimming. Best hill workouts. How to manage strength, speed, and PRs as you age. Switching gears from triathlon to ultra marathons. Popularity build of "alternative" races. Ironman brand going forward. Supplements. Hiking vs. Running. Core temp recalibration. Strength training. Going from a 70.3 to a Full. Questions from Athletes: How is it that humidity has an impact on swimming? I mean, I'm in water... 100% humidity…. What are the best run workouts to fit in hills/elevation Help me with the mindset around getting older and slower. When I was younger every race was a PR, shoot... every workout was a PR. (Maybe exaggerating) Now that I'm starting over every workout and every race can feel like a disappointment, regardless if I gave it hell or not. If you are trained for an Ironman Race and it gets cancelled, how would you change up your training to do an 45 mile ultramarathon instead and how long would you need to get ready? Asking for a friend 😊 Is this the year that creates an adventure racing mindset? Swim/run, gravel rides, trail running? If you have never done triathlon, how many olys before bumping to a half, and how many halfs before attempting a full. This understanding each person is different age/condition/athleticism. I would love to hear you opinion on how Ironman will improve their image after refusing to be flexible with refunding athletes with every race being cancelled. Will athletes still be loyal or will the brand die? How bad am I making my coach pull her hair out by adding half marathon & full marathon races in at random like 2-4 months out? Or is it really no big deal? I second this question. Hey can I tuck a 50k in a few weeks before my 70.3? 🤷♀️ This time of year I can get out for sunrise swims. So peaceful. When I do i don't have time to fit in my strength training. Should i still do some form of strength still or swim harder to keep upper body strong. Where do I start with strength training? Videos, Yoga, planks/push ups? (47yo female) Do you feel like you can gain all the strength necessary FOR triathlon THROUGH triathlon by focusing on hills, big gear work, pulling in the pool, etc. Or do you think it's necessary to implement outside gym sessions focused only on strength? Also, beyond what I mentioned, what are some of your favorite swim/bike/run strength sessions? What supplements do you think are important for triathlete health and what do you take on daily basis (if anything)? Would it be silly to use swim paddles in OWS training ? Recent podcast one of my favs. I was there in lville 18 , will never forget my coach Robbie hug at the finish line. Lol. Is there a way one can use multi-sport/triathlon training program to prepare for a marathon and improve timing? Fatigue due to higher running mileage is a limiter here. With all the IMs being cancelled and thus registrations getting deferred until next year, how easy do you think it will be to sign up for an IM next year? Who is your favorite athlete? And what made you choose me? If you're training g consistently and in "70.3 shape", how long is an IM build? How much time before the race would you begin a race specific build? To add on to Ashley Drayer's question--when is the best time/how many times per week to do said strength training so you're not so sore for the weekend long run? If your athlete gets sick during a heavy training phase, how do you ramp them back up after they're starting to feel better? What advice would you give to an athlete who believes in the run slow to run fast but consistently needs to WALK/run to keep heart rate down to an acceptable range? I've working at "running" since this winter and I'm not seeing much difference in heart rate or speed. Thanks! Hopefully this is a fun one...when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? How does one "find" the short course gears (speed)? When I've primarily been training long and strong for long course without getting injured because of adding to much intensity too fast. When you push past the point of overheating your core temp (almost always on the run, amiright?) is there any way to pull it back down or are you just toast? I enjoy hiking few times a month in the summer with elevation. 3-4 hr hikes with 2000 feet or greater in elevation change. How can this be done without affecting overall training. Can this be done in place of a long bike or run? Can we get another dog cast? ---------------- The C26 Online Hub is now open to the public!
