S1 Ep 486#486 – We Have To Do The Work

Are you training for goals or the Possibilities. It's an interesting distinction, but when you leave it open ended there's less "what do I do next" and more discovery. We talk about the Olympic Swim Trials and how swimmers don't get caught up in gadgets, but focus on how to get better and train for the possibilities. We also talk about how to get faster on the bike and why the best way to get better in this sport is by keeping things simple. S1 Ep 480#480 – Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga Recap

It was a massive weekend in Chattanooga and at the C26 Hub. We had fifty people racing and hundreds stopped in to say hi. Today, we reflect on Chattanooga 70.3 with a pretty intense reminder of how tough racing can be. We critique the swim start a bit and discuss how unfortunate it was to have the first cyclist in and last cyclist out so close together. We look at racing mistakes and how to work on them. And generally get into the principle of how race day means being ready to dig deep. Topics: We're out of "spectator shape" This race felt back to normal Swim start critique Did you underestimate the swim? Were you diligent in cooling yourself all day? When nutrition is overrated Making smart decisions on the move The number one way to beat the heat Shout out to the chill people race morning and the volunteers We knew it was a slow swim as soon as we saw the water People forget how hard triathlon is Good wake up call race We need to practice digging deep When you should try to "blow up" How cycling training translates to the race Don't assume anything . . . racing is unpredictable Are you sure you over-biked? S1 Ep 478#478 – There's No Such Thing As Always Going Up

We can't get faster every day. There has to be an unloading process to recover. Today we look at the point of taper, the importance of taking days off, and down weeks. We talk about heat and altitude acclimation, and how training should relieve stress. Sometimes you just don't have it and there could be a simple reason: because you're tired. As coaches we often look at a red in training peaks and see a green because it means your body needed it. Pressure equals force and all stress creates pressure. Identify what your body needs. S1 Ep 461#461 – This Isn't Rocket Science

E

This is NOT the "top ten things to be fast." This cast is about simplicity and why it works in training and our lives. Everyone's life and training is different, but there are proven formulas for success. If you're not healthy, energized, and happy with your life, there's a good chance your training is not on the right path. We explore the idea of "why so many of us want to feel smashed" and why that flies in the face of being comfortable in our own skin. We also address the postponement of Ironman Texas (again) and ask . . . why? Topics: Load me up, Coach Ironman Texas Postponed Again (this is towards the end) March Madness Brackets and Picking Homers We are not experts Knowing Yourself and What You Really Need Youthful energy and the ability to be surprised Shifting perspectives Coaching is not in a vacuum Variety in training How we all become addicts "Things are going great, so I thought I'd do this . . . " It's not that complicated Why do we want to feel smashed? The point is to come back tomorrow and be ready Goal: Comfort in your own skin The simplest principles and why they work We innately know what is best for us When something is "new" we don't know how it will work What's your best long-term plan County lines and the logistics of Ironman racing --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. S1 Ep 460#460 – Reconnecting with Race Speed and Emotions

How should we approach our first race back? We suggest looking at it like a controlled scrimmage or dress rehearsal. In other words, a spring board to a great season. If you watched Challenge Miami you probably saw that even the Pro triathletes were a bit rusty. As races come into view it may be time to step back and recalibrate your approach. That doesn't mean you have to be slower, but your early races after a long time off should probably be setting you up for something later. Find your own perfection without the pressure. Triathlon can seem like a recipe for aches and pains, but is it the sport or something else you're doing? Today, we look at active healing and moving therapy. We also look at why your metrics may be holding you back and look at the powerful logic of racing without your watch. There's nothing better than "controlling" your race and being one with the energy. Fatigue, volume, pain, living on the edge of injury and racing free. It's all here. Topics: Race Tracking is back!! S1 Ep 454#454 – Fitness is Fitness

What happens if we don't train for a week, or two, or three? Are you more worried about losing fitness . . . or confidence? February has sucked for a lot of us, and many are training for a race they chose two years ago, but it's okay to not be "feeling it" right now. Today we talk expectations, goals, and why we should lead with intention instead of ultimatums. Sometimes treading water is enough if it keeps you in the game. Also, short Ironman builds, resentments, and adjusting your benchmarks on the fly. Topics: Why February might be the toughest month It's 100% okay to be struggling right now Gigantic shelf life for motivation We change, our motivation changes What if racing becomes an obligation?? What makes you happiest right now? Taking expectations off our races Insomnia and vitamin D Shorter Ironman builds Emotional peaking way too early Why do we always want a "countdown?" The toughest races to train for based on time of year The pressure of ONE DAY The race as the release The pressure to prove that we are somebody Squeezing the most out of today College basketball, athletes, and no fans Spectator energy Treading water . . . S1 Ep 453#453 – Listener Q&A - Coaching Philosophy, FTP, Zwift, RPE, Andrew Messick

GREAT QUESTIONS today from our closed Facebook Group. We talk favorite coaches and coaching philosophy. We also go extensively on RPE (Rate of perceived exertion) and why it may be the key to being your best. We look at when it's best to train solo or with a group. Should you work on getting better at FTP testing? Also, what about the mental side of dealing with injuries or when you should empty the tank in training? And finally, a reaction to the message from Ironman's Andrew Messick on the state of upcoming races. Questions: Which coaches (from all sports) do you and Mike draw the most inspiration & insight from and why? Opinions on training with RPE?? Using HR and or power as a secondary indicator of how hard u r working. Thoughts on the FTP builder workouts in Zwift? From where you guys are, is there any correlation between successful athletes and whether they tend to do most of their training by themselves or with other people? Exploring "Emptying the tank' Dealing with the mental side of injury. Thoughts on Ironman delaying race cancellations and pushing so many races into the fall? Athletes want to race, but does Ironman's refund policy (i.e., they don't) mean we stop signing up until races are more certain to happen? Other Topics Spawned from Athlete Questions: Learning through analogy Why GPS is like a weather forecast Who cares if you blow up? Feel better? Wait two more days You can't un-postpone a race --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. S1 Ep 452#452 – Triathlon As A Tool To Deal With Life

How can this sport be used as a extra tool to feel better and put yourself back together, and not be worn out or tired? Today, we talk about personal experiences and how we've leaned into pain, backed off when needed, and used fear as our compass. It's easy to get lost in our heads, especially when forced inside and staring at a screen all day. We turn more into robots than someone in touch with nature or our natural energy sources. Mike meditates in sleet and Robbie grieves the loss of a good friend. Topics: Changing up your running shoes Mike has Mouse Shoulder? Bad posture impact C26 Coaching Workshop Robbie loses a close friend Extrovert/Introvert? S, B, R to put yourself back together Control vs Letting Go We're turning into robots Leaning into pain Endurance as a way to grieve We can't be afraid Skipping fun because you're worried about a race What feels best for you right NOW Letting down your guard Fear as our compass Crying is good, even on a run Take control of your workouts Be smart, but let go Mike's sitting in the sleet How we fill our voids in a proportional way Do this sport to feel good Convince yourself that it's going to be a good day --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. S1 Ep 451#451 – Flirting With Pain and Fear

Did you leave it all on the course? Did you push that interval enough? Did you have more in you? Today, we get into the concept of training tp push through fear and pain. How building experience with digging deeper pays off over time. Sometimes we're afraid of finding our limits, but what if we're only living at 80%? Building confidence in knowing you CAN do more. Sometimes we have to let go and just be with what is. Let go of the discomfort and learn the skill of reaching the next level. Topics: It's straight up cold in some places Hat Maintenance with Mike & Robbie Are you Going Hard Enough? The most painful moments of your life Trying to figure out things about ourselves We Choose to Quit You probably have more in you Experience not being in control Settle in with your breath Commit beyond the fear Terrified of finding our limits Long interval struggles Keep spinning You have to SEE it One hour FTP tests 5 minutes at a time, next mailbox, next aid station LEARNING to keep going Pushing is a learned skill Overheating in 5ks Going into the daily fire Your relationship to digging deep into pain Finding pressure pints Confidence in knowing you CAN do more --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. S1 Ep 450#450 – We Are Never Done

Run Camp once again taught and reminded us of the importance of committing to getting better by "racing yourself." Today we look at how to motivate ourselves with or without racing. We look at why strong is better than fast even if you want to go fast. Also, positive peer pressure, making hills our best friends and out-executing the competition. We talk about turning nervous energy into a positive, letting down your guard, and becoming obsessed with feeling strong and durable. Topics: How do we judge "better?" Letting down your guard Stressed and anxious? Motivation to push ourselves Positive peer pressure What happens when we don't think? Hills are our best friends Nervous energy as a positive They ran further than ever at run camp Racing Yourself Why endurance sports are great for development How do you want to challenge yourself? Molding challenges into daily life Strong vs. Fast . . . what's it feel like? Not letting distraction into your run Learning and embracing growth Speed vs. Efficiency Racing smart and why it matters Out-executing your competition Obsessed with feeling strong and durable In-Race Recovery Knowing who you are as an athlete Making your last mile the fastest Quick vs. Fast Holding on at the End of Races --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. S1 Ep 449#449 – Fraud or For Real - Part 2

This is our second version of "Fraud or For Real" and we answer questions from our closed Facebook group. We look at drafting on the run, carb loading, training through bad diets. Also, goggle fog, are shoes faster than others, optimum weight for racing, road bikes vs. tri bikes. And what about disc wheels? Do they make that much difference? Is there a comfortable saddle? Do shorter cranks help triathletes? And . . . what's the perfect taper? Topics: You can Draft While Running? Is there such a thing as "Carb Loading" You can "out-train" a bad diet The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly will take minutes off my run? The best way to avoid goggle fog is spitting? The less I weigh, the faster I will be? If you don't complete a set of Tarzan drills coach will give you the same drills twice in the same week? The perfect taper doesn't exist? If you don't eat the right balance of protein and carbs right after a workout, you are not maximizing the benefits of the workout? Disk wheel or no disk? Really that important for a Sprint or Oly? I will one day find a saddle that my tushie finds comfortable? Shorter cranks are in general better for triathletes? The more "stuff" I have, the better I'll get? My road bike can smoke your trip bike on any course that is not totally flat. So I'm better off saving 4k? A fan is super important for cooling during bike workouts? --------------- Coach Mike is accepting full-time athletes. We all want to see progress, but what about progress within the mastery of where you are? But there's more to improvement than simply going faster. What about the workout that becomes "easy" to you? It's not as glamorous, but that is real progress. Once we master where we are, we're much better suited to climb up the next rung of the ladder. S1 Ep 439#439 - In 2021 . . . Why Not?

Instead of asking why, start saying Why Not? Today we explore the power of moving forward without fear and how that clears the deck for each day. What if there were no New Years and days just kept counting up? We get into the mental aspects of training and the excitement that racing brings and how much we miss it. Robbie talks about being a parent. Mike remembers losing his father one year ago today and how it stripped away many fears. It's been a tough year, but "what matters most is how well you walk through the fire."* Topics: Don't forget to check out the Club Program where we take care of planning your entire training schedule around your 2021 races. Also, Mike is accepting athletes for full time coaching, learn more about both at C26Triathlon.com A Day is a Day The official decision on if we'll add sponsors in 2021 . . . A little layer of numb and the patience lesson Stoic or reality? Would New Years be so exciting if Christmas was in June? What if there were no years, only days that keep counting? Finding excitement and/or optimism on THIS day Find a way . . . businesses, restaurants, you and adaptability Once again, the obstacle is the way The 2020 "theme" for our athletes Sitting still gets too comfortable When sitting on the beach sucks Being trapped by the media When you manipulate our own truth The illusion of intimidation What matters most is how well you walk through the fire Most people have no clue what you do Dancing through life Oh how we miss the excitement of Ironman and races Putting the scale of the year into context A simple 2 or 3 week training block When we look back for our "best day of the year" Putting extra pressure on ourselves Building confidence, unloading fear Create your own world Is pressure really pressure? Difficult situations as a parent Hayden the blue collar worker One of the most not talked about things in life Mike and Robbie's brief stints as psychology majors Centering your goals around navigating life Aiming at your effort Instead of just remember the great and bad days, start focusing on the ones that make up our lives. Mike talks about losing his father one year ago today and how that stripped some of his fears but also built some frustration with the events of 2020 *Quote by Charles Bukowski that hangs on the wall of the C26 Hub --------------- Registration is now open for the C26 Club Training Program. S1 Ep 437#437 – Listener Questions and Answers . . . on a Cozy Christmas Eve

E

Back to the Crushing Iron Facebook Group (Search Crushing Iron Group) for listener questions and we got some good ones! Favorite bike workouts, changing bike cassettes for different courses, our bikes of choice, superstitions, adjusting power and HR numbers for races, how the podcast has changed our approach, and how we coach athletes that struggle with consistency. Questions are below and we had a great time! Questions Answered: What is Robbie's favorite bike workout, be specific. (Will Mike share his??) If I'm going to change to easier gearing for a hilly triathlon (In my case 70.3 Blue Ridge and then IMWI), should I just keep training with the cassette I have over the winter since it's harder and if so, when would be a good time to change to the easier cassette relative to race day? What kind of bikes does Mike own?? I'm figuring there has got to be more than one What are your superstitions, or what you have to have, need, or do before a race? At a high level, what is best way to strategize your "numbers" for a race? Is there a best approach to swim pace, bike power, and run pace based on your training numbers? Are our tires less inflated than we intend to be by losing that quick puff of air when disconnecting the pump...or am I the only one that struggles with this? Doing my first 70.3 next year, what are the things you wish you knew when you did your first half back in the day? My first 70.3 in Augusta last year was brutally hot but I felt the crowd and atmosphere around me at all times and so mentally I felt strong the whole race. A month ago I did the bike leg of the full Ironman at the Great Floridian and it absolutely killed me from a mental standpoint. What tactics or things can I do leading up to my first full in Chattanooga this year to help from a mental stamina standpoint? I'm starting to learn quickly that Ironman is actually a 4 sport game and not just 3. How has this podcast changed you both athletically - pressure to stay consistent? Accountability?
