Disturbing information has emerged in the Madeline Soto murder case as police release interviews with her mother, Jennifer Soto, and details of Maddie’s cause of death. During Madeline Soto’s autopsy, the medical examiner, Dr. Stephan Giles, raised concerns about her hyoid bone. Dr. Giles noted that the right portion of the bone was not intact, suggesting possible strangulation. The autopsy confirmed that Madeline Soto died from strangulation, and her death was ruled a homicide. Investigators discovered shocking internet searches on a computer used by Stephan Sterns, including a search for Sevoflurane, a volatile anesthetic used for hypnosis, amnesia, analgesia, akinesia, and autonomic blockade during surgical procedures. Another released detail revealed that the socks Maddie was wearing were clean, indicating her feet never touched the ground while wearing them. This is significant, as Maddie’s body was found in a wooded area behind a locked fence. Police believe her body was either dropped over the barbed wire fence or carried through the gate before being moved to the location where she was found. Sarah Boone called 911, telling the operator that she and her boyfriend had been playing around, and she fell asleep. When she woke up the next morning, Jorge Torres, Jr. was dead inside a suitcase, but that isn't exactly true. Although it's unclear how Boone convinced her 42-year-old boyfriend to get into the suitcase, we do know she zipped him inside and refused to let him out, no matter how much he begged. We know this because Boone recorded the incident on her phone, taunting Torres as he said he couldn't breathe and pleaded to be released. Boone claims the couple had been drinking a bottle of wine and decided to play hide-and-seek. Court records show Torres had been in the suitcase for about three hours when Boone says she fell asleep, waking up late the next day. She says she then remembered Torres was still in the suitcase, pulled him out, found his body was purple, and attempted CPR. However, she also called her ex-husband before dialing 911. Boone, 46, is now charged with second-degree murder in Jorge Torres's death, with her trial expected to begin on October 7. One of the main issues in preparing for trial has been Boone's inability to retain an attorney. Eight attorneys have withdrawn from the case due to difficulties working with her. A judge previously told Boone she would have to represent herself, but a ninth attorney, James Owens, has now stepped in to defend her. Owens requested a continuance to prepare Boone's defense, but the judge denied the request. Jeff German, an investigative reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was found dead outside his home. Days later, police released surveillance footage of a potential suspect wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat, an orange safety shirt, and black pants, seen walking near the scene. Further investigation revealed that German’s reporting had placed him in conflict with elected Public Administrator Robert Telles. Earlier, German had reported that Telles created a toxic work environment and was having an extramarital affair with an employee. These allegations seemingly contributed to Telles losing his re-election bid. Investigators searched Telles’ home, towing a red SUV and discovering shoes with apparent blood on them. A straw hat matching the one in the video was also found. Both items had been cut up in an attempt to destroy evidence, but DNA under German’s fingernails provided police with crucial evidence. This is the last time Mary Horn ever sees her daughter. When Brittany has not returned in 10 days and isn’t answering calls or texts, Mary Horn reports her daughter missing to West Virginia State police. Mary and sons Kevin and Neil spend days putting up fliers with pictures of Brittany. Brittany doesn’t drive, so the family focuses on foot searches starting from her mother’s home. They find no sign of Brittany. As the news of Brittany’s disappearance spreads, the family begins to receive tips from Brittany’s friends. A friend of Brittany’s claims he gave her a ride to a home in Louisa, Kentucky on June 12th. Brittany’s childhood best friend also comes forward, telling police she received a frantic voicemail from Brittany on June 13th. In the message, Brittany says she’s scared, trying to leave Louisa and get back home. A year after Brittany’s disappearance, with little progress from the West Virginia State Police, the lead investigator in Brittany’s case, Trooper Corey Maynard, is ambushed while responding to a shooting call in Mingo County. Maynard is shot several times, and dies of his injuries. Brittany’s case has to be reassigned, and a new investigator starts from scratch, losing more precious time searching for Brittany. Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts have much to celebrate. It’s not only Father’s Day weekend and Ethan’s birthday weekend, but also the couple’s anniversary. Savannah recently gave birth to their twin sons, now 6 weeks old. Family friend Nicole Virzi traveled from San Diego to Pittsburgh to visit and lend a helping hand. While caring for the twin boys, Ari and Leon, Nicole Virzi tells the parents she noticed unusual injuries on Ari’s genitals. Around 6:30 p.m., the new parents take Ari to the hospital, leaving their other son, Leon Katz, in Virzi’s care. Just after 11 p.m., Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts receive a call from Nicole Virzi, informing them that while she was in the kitchen preparing a bottle for Leon, the baby fell from his bouncer seat and hit his head. Nicole Virzi tells the 911 dispatcher that Leon fell from a bassinet, hit his head, and is becoming unresponsive. When the police arrive, Virzi tells them she fell asleep with the baby in his bouncer seat. When she wakes up, she goes to the kitchen to prepare a bottle. While she is out of the room, she hears Leon screaming and finds him on the floor with a bump on his head. She tells the police he fell out of his bouncer seat. Rushed to the hospital, doctors discover Leon Katz has a severe skull fracture on the left side of his head and multiple brain bleeds. The injuries suffered by the 6-week-old baby prove fatal, and he is pronounced dead the next morning at Children’s Hospital. Police say Virzi has no “plausible explanation” for the severity of Leon’s injuries. Upon examining the bouncer seat, detectives report that it is about 18 inches from the highest point of the seat to the floor. Doctors inform investigators about the injuries sustained by Leon’s twin brother, Ari. He has small scratches on both sides of his face, two bruises below his belly button, and swelling, bruising, redness, and scratches on his genitals. The doctor who examined the injuries to both boys states they are consistent with child abuse, noting that these injuries were inflicted and not accidental. All of Leon’s injuries are described as “acute." Prosecutors have already implicated Jasveen Sangha, known as the "Ketamine Queen," who sold the drug involved in Matthew Perry's death. She is also connected to other customer deaths, and prosecutors believe there are likely more victims given the volume of drugs Sangha sold. Sangha remains in custody without bond in connection with Perry's death. Drug dealer Eric Fleming, who reportedly served as a program director at the Bel-Air rehab Red Door, also had a resident die of an overdose while under his watch. Additionally, Brooke Mueller’s close connections to suspects Fleming and Sangha have emerged. Mueller spent time with Sangha during one of her rehab stints, and Fleming is reportedly a godfather to one of Mueller’s children. Mueller is said to have pressured her then-boyfriend William Cooney to join Fleming’s rehab program, where Cooney overdosed and died. Mueller may have introduced Fleming and Sangha to Perry as a means to facilitate his addiction. Federal prosecutors report that Mueller is cooperating with the investigation and is not facing any charges. Court documents reveal the close ties between Sangha, Fleming, and assistant Kenneth Iwamasa. Iwamasa told Fleming he "cleaned up the scene" by disposing of ketamine vials and syringes and "deleted everything." Fleming then informed Sangha that he believed they were protected since he never dealt with Perry directly, only through Iwamasa, who would be considered Perry's "enabler." In their communications, Sangha and Fleming refer to Perry using the code name "Chandler." The doctor directly implicated in Matthew Perry’s ketamine overdose, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, continues to practice at his Calabasas urgent care clinic. The clinic remains open but must post details of Plasencia’s felony case at the front door. While Plasencia still holds an active medical license, he has surrendered his DEA registration number and is not permitted to prescribe controlled substances. Investigators searching for Mamta Bhatt arrived at her home with search warrants and were shocked to find the house in disarray upon entering the front door. They noticed packed luggage and, in plain view, passports belonging to Mamta's husband, Naresh, and their daughter, Neema. Inside the home, officers used Bluestar Technology, a forensic tool that reveals invisible blood traces at crime scenes, uncovering pools of blood and blood spatter throughout the house. In the master bedroom, the bed had been moved to block access to the closet. After moving the bed, detectives observed a light pink stain on the carpet, which they suspected to be blood. Following the discovery of the light pink stain in the master bedroom, investigators noticed what appeared to be a blood trail leading from the bedroom to the master bathroom. Using Bluestar technology in the bathroom, detectives were shocked as the entire bathroom floor illuminated with what appeared to be blood. In the master bathroom, investigators carefully removed the bathtub and confirmed, with the naked eye, what they believed to be blood—not only around the tub area but also trapped in the caulking. Investigators suspect that Naresh Bhatt killed his wife, dragged her body, creating a blood trail, and concealed it in a location that has yet to be discovered. Although the body has not been found, investigators believe the amount of blood detected in the master bedroom and bathroom is inconsistent with survival. On Twitter, Jordan Demay received a message from a user named Dani Roberts, who convinced him to send explicit photos. Moments later, the situation turned dark. "Dani Roberts" demanded money, threatening to send the photos to Jordan’s family and friends if he didn’t comply. Jordan sent all the money he had, but the demands continued. Six hours later, Jordan Demay took his own life. Days after Jordan’s death, his girlfriend received one of his explicit photos and went to the police. Marquette County Sheriff's detectives, working with the FBI, traced "Dani Roberts'" IP address to Nigeria. In a significant ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court will determine whether interference from a court clerk influenced the jury's decision to convict Alex Murdaugh of killing his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul. Murdaugh's lawyers allege that Becky Hill, the court clerk, attempted to sway the jury to secure a conviction in order to promote a book she is writing about the case, particularly focusing on the trial. Concerns about potential jury tampering were raised during the trial. Trial Judge Clifton Newman addressed the issue in an in-chambers discussion with defense and prosecution attorneys, expressing concern that court clerk Becky Hill might have had inappropriate contact with at least one juror, who was later dismissed from the trial. Following the trial, Murdaugh's attorneys sought to have Newman barred from hearing any appeals in the case; however, Newman retired before a decision was made. His replacement, retired Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, Judge Jean Toal, ultimately rejected the claims of jury tampering. The South Carolina Supreme Court has now overturned Judge Toal's decision, meaning the state Supreme Court will consider whether Alex Murdaugh should be granted a retrial. Teenagers have been arrested in connection with the death of a mother of eight, who was gunned down after a confrontation with suspected drug dealers. Blanca Velasco noticed a blue Toyota sedan parked outside her home for an extended period. Feeling suspicious, her daughter Maria Ramos accompanied Velasco down the driveway to investigate the unfamiliar car. In the street, the men in the car claimed they had come to deliver an “order” to Velasco’s 16-year-old grandson and flashed a marijuana vape pen. The two women argued with the men, prompting the blue Toyota to speed away. Determined to keep the dealers from returning, the mother and grandmother got into their own car and followed the Toyota for two blocks. Suddenly, the Toyota screeched to a stop, and Blanca Velasco stopped just behind it. Maria got out to approach the car, and before retreating across the street, she pepper-sprayed the occupants. A man in the backseat, armed with a gun, got out and chased Maria down the street before opening fire. Blanca pulled closer to the Toyota in an attempt to shield her daughter, who was trying to take cover from the gunfire. As Blanca turned back toward the Toyota, the shooter re-entered the vehicle and aimed the loaded gun at her. Panicked, Blanca sped away with the blue Toyota in pursuit. Backtracking, Olivas finds Zahriya on the ground, completely unresponsive after being hurled from the moving vehicle. Federal Prosecutors allege that Perry first obtains ketamine from an unscrupulous doctor aiming to take advantage of the actor’s addiction issues. Dr. Salvador Plasencia teaches Perry’s live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa how to administer the drug, and provides ketamine to both Perry and Iwamasa at exorbitant prices. When the drugs become too expensive, Perry and Iwamasa turn to street dealers Assistant Kenneth Iwamasa reaches out to several street dealers. Eric Fleming agrees to a deal, and turns to his supplier Jasveen Sangha, dubbed “The Ketamine Queen.” Fleming pays Sangha for the drugs with cash from Iwamasa. In two weeks, Sangha provides Fleming and Iwamasa 50 vials of ketamine to distribute to Perry for $11,000. Ballerina and aspiring model Ashley Benefield is standing trial for shooting her then-husband, Doug Benefield, to death. The couple married just 13 days after meeting. They had a child, but their relationship was rocky, with frequent arguments reported between Ashley and Doug Benefield. Ashley Benefield claims her husband was abusive and volatile. As her pregnancy progressed, she moved in with her mother, denying Doug Benefield access to information about the baby, including her birth. Ashley Benefield planned to move out. Doug Benefield arrived at Ashley's home with a U-Haul truck to help pack for a move to Maryland. He believed he would be moving with the family but intended to live in a separate home. Ashley Benefield claims that Doug became angry while loading the truck, "body checked" her twice, hit her hip with the corner of a box, and caused her head to hit the wall. Fearing for her life, Ashley ran to her bedroom and retrieved a gun. She turned around and saw Doug standing in the doorway. Claiming Doug lunged toward her, Ashley fired the gun, shooting him twice—once in the leg and once in the chest, causing damage to his lungs and severe bleeding. It was determined that Doug was not directly facing Ashley at the time he was killed. Dueling documentaries are being released about the death of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner. Netflix is debuting American Murder: Laci Peterson, a three-part docuseries directed by Skye Borgman. The series includes Laci's mother, Sharon Rocha, speaking publicly for the first time since Laci’s tragic death. The second documentary, Face to Face with Scott Peterson, is a new three-part series premiering on Peacock on August 20. In this series, Scott Peterson, who was accused of the murder, speaks for the first time in the 21 years since his arrest. Peterson reportedly admits to being unfaithful, calling himself a “total a-hole” for having an affair, but continues to deny killing Laci. Peterson was involved with Amber Frey at the time of Laci's disappearance. It was Laci’s stepfather, Ron Grantski, who reported her missing, not her husband. Initially, Scott Peterson told friends he had gone to play golf, but later changed his story to say he went fishing. Peterson has been fighting for years to overturn his conviction. Although his death sentence was initially overturned, the California Supreme Court upheld his conviction while overturning the death sentence due to the improper dismissal of some jurors based on their views on the death penalty. Peterson remains in prison, sentenced to life without parole, but he is not giving up. In an effort to secure a new trial, Scott Peterson's legal team requested DNA testing on more than a dozen pieces of evidence. However, after hearing the arguments, the judge ruled that only a single 15.5-inch piece of duct tape found on Laci Peterson's pants during her autopsy would be tested for DNA. The court denied requests to test all other evidence. The murder trial of former Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles has begun. A jury of seven men and seven women has been selected. Telles, 47, is accused of stabbing investigative journalist Jeff German outside the reporter's home. German had written several explosive articles for the Las Vegas Review-Journal exposing bullying, harassment, and an inappropriate relationship within Telles' office. A suspect was caught on surveillance video walking to the home, wearing an orange shirt with reflective stripes, a straw hat, and carrying a duffel bag. Police say that on the morning of the incident, the suspect approached German's home, went to the side of the house, and shortly after, German emerged from the garage door, went to the side of the house, and was ultimately stabbed. Telles is facing four charges: murder with a deadly weapon, burglary of a motor vehicle, and two counts of destruction of evidence.
