Luigi Mangione will be facing lethal injection if he is convicted in the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione has asked for a laptop to assist in his defense.  Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, apprehended at a McDonald's, where an employee believed he resembled the man who shot Thompson and called the police. Police say the man had a gun with a suppressor and fake IDs — including one for New Jersey which reportedly was used at the hostel in New York, and a hand-written manifesto. Jessie Marie Peterson, 31, an attorney with Type 1 diabetes, was admitted to the hospital for a diabetes-related illness. Two days later, she called her mother around 2:30 p.m., asking to be picked up and taken home. When her mother arrived two hours later, hospital staff told her that Peterson had checked herself out against medical advice. Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student, traveled to the Dominican Republic with five college friends on March 3, staying at the all-inclusive Riu República resort in Punta Cana. Days later, on March 6, she disappeared under mysterious circumstances. On the night of her disappearance, Konanki and her friends were dancing at a disco when parts of the resort experienced a 25-hour power outage. At some point, the group decided to take a moonlit walk on the beach. Surveillance footage captured Konanki walking toward the beach with five women and two men around 4:15 a.m. Approximately an hour later, five women and one man were seen leaving the beach, while Konanki remained behind with 24-year-old Joshua Riibe, a U.S. college student from Minnesota. The next morning, Konanki’s friends went on an excursion she had not signed up for and only realized she was missing later that afternoon. When they confronted Riibe, he claimed he had fallen asleep on the beach after passing out and assumed Konanki had left before him. By this time, she had been missing for over 12 hours. Dominican authorities launched an extensive search by land, air, and sea. They discovered her clothes near the beach but found no evidence of foul play. Riibe was questioned multiple times by investigators, including Dominican Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso. His passport was confiscated, and he was monitored by police as a key witness. Riibe stated that he and Konanki were swept into the ocean by a large wave but managed to return to shore. He last saw her in knee-deep water before vomiting and falling asleep on a lounge chair. Konanki’s parents, Subbarayudu and SreeDevi Konanki, have since requested that Dominican authorities declare their daughter legally deceased. In their letter to officials, they acknowledged Riibe’s account and expressed their belief that she likely drowned. Despite ongoing investigations, no evidence of foul play has been uncovered. Riibe has since returned to the United States after restrictions on his travel were lifted. The case remains open as Dominican authorities continue their investigation into Konanki’s disappearance. It has been eight years since the Buckner family has seen or heard from Shapammala Latrisha Buckner. She was 20 years old when she disappeared from the Houston apartment she shared with her boyfriend, shortly after a neighbor and a family member received concerning texts from her. They believe she was involved in an altercation just before she vanished, but police have released few details about the circumstances of her disappearance. After reports of a disturbance the night before, Shapammala’s landlord stopped by to check on her. When no one answered, the landlord found her door unlocked and called Shapammala’s emergency contact. Family members arrived and found all of her belongings—including her phone, purse, ID, and keys—still inside. It was highly unusual for her to go anywhere without those items. After several days with no sign of her or any communication, Shapammala was reported missing. She was last seen at home the evening of March 21. Late Tuesday night, a neighbor heard what sounded like an altercation next door. Knowing Shapammala should have been home alone, the neighbor texted to check on her. Shapammala responded that she wasn’t okay and needed help. When the neighbor asked if she should call police, Shapammala said yes—but authorities did not make contact with her that night. Shapammala’s aunt also received a call from her, claiming she was being attacked in her home. The aunt rushed to the apartment, but someone else answered the door and refused to let her inside, claiming Shapammala wasn’t there. Shapammala did not respond to any more texts or calls that night. Houston Police and Texas EquuSearch searched the area for Shapammala, believing she may have left the apartment on foot. However, the searches turned up no further clues. Investigators interviewed the neighbor and aunt, then spoke with several more possible witnesses. Shapammala’s boyfriend was confirmed to have been on base that night, far from their Houston apartment. Aaliyah Kyles rented her first apartment in January, securing a unit at The Boulevard in the Hickory Hills neighborhood of Memphis. The complex features smart locks on every unit, off-street parking, and regular patrols. Amenities include a gym, pool, basketball court, playground, and a spacious clubhouse. The location sits just minutes from Hickory Ridge Mall, the Memphis Coliseum, and Memphis International Airport. Around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, a resident at The Boulevard heard gunshots and saw a man dressed in all black running from a nearby apartment. She called 911 to report the shooting but could not provide details about the suspect. Memphis police responded and found the door to Aaliyah Kyles’ apartment wide open. Nothing inside appeared immediately out of place, but officers discovered a gruesome scene in the bathroom. Kyles was lying dead in the bathtub. She was naked and had multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators determined the suspect entered through a window with a broken lock. The medical examiner later confirmed Kyles had been raped. Disturbing new details have emerged in the torture and murder of 16-year-old Miranda Corsette. Court documents reveal that at least six people knew Steven Gress, 37, and Michelle Brandes, 35, were holding Miranda against her will before she died. Gress allegedly sent photos of Miranda, visibly bruised, to three people, including his mother. She told police she did not view the images but admitted her son tried to talk to her about Miranda. She said she shut down the conversation, telling him she didn’t want to know. At least two neighbors reportedly saw Miranda in distress at the home. A woman who lived with Gress and Brandes witnessed a week of torture, the murder, and the clean-up that followed. The documents also outline a detailed timeline, including a trip to celebrate Brandes’ birthday at a Popeyes restaurant—while Miranda’s dismembered remains allegedly sat in Gress’ trunk. During a track meet between Memorial High School and Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas, light rain begins to fall, and athletes take cover under tents with their respective teams at Kuykendall Stadium. Memorial High School athlete Austin Metcalf finds Centennial High School athlete Karmelo Anthony under the Memorial High School tent and tells him he needs to move from under his team's tent. When Anthony refuses, words are exchanged, and Anthony tells Metcalf, "Touch me and see what happens." Centennial High School's Karmelo Anthony allegedly reaches inside his bag, grabs a knife, stabs Austin Metcalf in the chest, and runs away. As Metcalf's twin brother, Hunter, comes to his brother's aid, witnesses point out Anthony to a nearby middle school resource officer, who chases the suspect down. The school resource officer confronts Karmelo Anthony, telling him to put his hands up in the air. Anthony tells the officer, "I was protecting myself," claiming Metcalf "put his hands on" him. Anthony hears the officer say he has the "alleged stabbing suspect" in custody, and Anthony replies, "I'm not alleged. I did it." Anthony claims self-defense. A Downers Grove, Illinois, mom comes across disturbing text messages while setting up her 15-year-old son’s new iPhone using a backup from his iCloud account. The contents prompt her to take her son straight to the police. It appears the teen is discussing a sexual encounter with a love interest—his married, 30-year-old teacher, Christina Formella. The student informs the police that Coach Formella began sending him flirty messages on the school’s chat system after she became his tutor in the fall of 2023. He explains that their conversations shifted to text after the teacher provided him with her phone number so they could play a game together. Records show numerous FaceTime calls between the two, with the victim stating that their relationship outside of school culminated in a rape in December. Formella denies raping the boy or having a romantic relationship with him, asserting that she is a “good person” and that “everybody” comes after her because of her looks. She admits to developing a close relationship with the student and claims that she “cares too much about him,” but simultaneously labels him a stalker. Formella insists she did not send the texts, arguing that her kindness towards the boy allowed him to break into her unattended phone, send the texts to himself, and then delete them from her phone to later use as blackmail. Sherri Papini  is back in court fighting for custody of her children.  She wants to be reunited with one child and increased visitation the another.   Her ex-husband, Keith, was granted full custody after Papini was charged with 34 counts of mail fraud and one count of lying to the FBI.  Ultimately Papini  pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of making false statements. She was sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $300,000 Keith’s defense claims Sherri's actions, perpetuating the hoax that she had been kidnapped, put the children through "hell" and "they could not thrive under her "pathological personality." Sherri Papini admits her 2016 kidnapping was a hoax. The 39-year-old mom was reported missing on November 2,  and told investigators when she was found 22 days later that a pair of Hispanic women kidnapped her at gunpoint.  Papini said her kidnappers abused her and then shoved her out of a car. Papini  was emaciated, her hair was cut shorter, and she had cuts and bruises all over her body, but prosecutors said she caused the injuries herself. The case was broken in 2020 when DNA led investigators to Papini’s ex, who told them she had been with him the entire time. Just after 1 a.m., aspiring lawyer Lauren Mullins drives home after a night of drinking in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As an MIT police officer and a man on a moped slow for a red light, Mullins fails to brake. She crashes into the moped, sending it flying into the back of the police car.   The moped driver, 73-year-old Daniel O'Neil, is rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Cambridge police find Mullins extremely intoxicated and belligerent. The Suffolk University law student is charged with operating under the influence, causing serious bodily injury and negligent operation of a vehicle.   Officers are unable to conduct a standardized field sobriety test due to Mullins' belligerent behavior, but they note her slurred speech and extreme unsteadiness. The 32-year-old has a history of alcohol-related arrests, with a record dating back to 2014. She has been arrested seven times in the past three years on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.   O'Neil initially survives but later succumbs to his injuries. Mullins now faces a motor vehicle homicide charge. Dr. Hamid Mirshojae and his new wife have a six-month-old daughter. He also has three children from a previous marriage, which ended in an ugly divorce and legal battles that have continued for 15 years. Dr. Hamid Mirshojae and his first wife, Ahang Kelk Mirshojae, began divorce proceedings in 2009 when he applied for a restraining order to keep her away from their $6 million marital home. In the petition, he cited "physical violence," accusing Ahang of repeatedly punching him. Legal disputes have continued since. Ahang Mirshojae managed the office of the Woodland Hills Medical Clinic and remained an employee there until 2016, when Dr. Mirshojae reportedly caught her embezzling substantial sums from the clinic. Dr. Mirshojae continued his standard practice. An hour after closing Woodland Hills Medical Clinic and Urgent Care for the day, he was ambushed by a masked gunman near his SUV around 5:30 p.m. The LAPD arrived 42 minutes later to find the 61-year-old primary care and emergency physician with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say a single gunman fled on foot. The investigation led officers to his ex-wife. Rumors of a Luigi Mangione sex tapes underlines the  public fascination with the alleged murderer.  What about the facts in this case? Just hours after Luigi Mangione was taken into custody in Pennsylvania, he faced a murder charge. The second-degree murder charge joined charges of forgery, carrying firearms without a license, tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement authorities. The initial charges were local to Pennsylvania. However, the NYPD also charged Mangione with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a forged instrument, and criminal possession of a weapon. Mangione will be extradited to New York, but that transfer likely will not happen for several days. Mangione was arrested while sitting in the back of an Altoona McDonald's. He was wearing a mask, eating breakfast, and looking at his laptop when an employee suspected he was the subject of a manhunt out of New York. Altoona police arrived, and Mangione began to shake when officers asked him to lower his mask and confirm if he had been in New York recently. A search of Mangione revealed a ghost gun, a silencer, and multiple fake IDs. Officers arrested the 26-year-old on several charges but not for the murder of Brian Thomas. Mangione faces charges of forgery, carrying a firearm without a license, tampering with records or identification, possession of instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement. It is around midnight when she calls her 13-year-old boyfriend, who says he hears Jocelyn talking to some adults before he hangs up the phone.  After talking to her boyfriend, Jocelyn is seen on camera at a local 7-Eleven convenience store.  In the pictures, Jocelyn Nungaray is seen with two other people, both adults.  It's possibly the same people with whom her boyfriend overheard Jocelyn talking. Around the same time Billie Jean Jackson is calling 911, Alexis Nungaray is preparing to wake up her 5-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, Jocelyn Nungaray. Finding Jocelyn gone, Alexis reportedly pings her daughter’s cell phone location, which traces the phone to a creek near 400 West Rankin Road Alexis Nungaray arrives at the spot where her daughter Jocelyn's phone pings and sees police tape is up and police are canvassing the area. Alexis Nungaray tells police her daughter is missing, and she is there because this is where her phone last pinged. Officers take down information from Alexis, but it still takes an hour before she receives the call that a body has been found, and it is possibly Jocelyn. Now  Harris County District Attorney's Office is seeking the death penalty  for both men. After divorcing, Echo Lloyd moves 16 miles from her home to rural Edwards, Missouri. The property is remote. In the plethora of court documents filed in the last week, more of the prosecution’s case against Bryan Kohberger has been revealed. The state plans to enter a wide variety of evidence ranging from Kohberger’s educational records dating back to his time at Desales University, transactions made through Kohberger’s bank and Venmo, weather data from the night of the murders, and hours of surveillance footage. The defense desperate to have the evidence tossed.   The defense is filing to block the various pieces of evidence, claiming the state has delivered thousands of pages of documents and terabytes of video with no context of how it will be used against Kohberger in court. Anne Taylor is demanding the judge order prosecutors to explain how each item is relevant. Taylor says otherwise, it is ‘impossible’ for Kohberger to effectively confront this evidence.  In arguments against its inclusion, the defense reveals that prosecutors plan to enter into evidence records from Kohberger’s graduate studies in psychology at DeSales University. The filing says they have received discovery including Kohberger's school calendar, written course work, testing, emails, and syllabi from his time as a master’s student, and the attorneys fail to see its relevance. As part of his thesis, Kohberger worked with professors to develop a survey exploring how emotions influence a criminal’s decision making during the commission of a violent crime.   Kohberger also wants weather data from the night of the murders to be kept from the jury. The state plans to use records from the National Weather Service for November 12 and 13 to show Kohberger wouldn’t have had much luck “stargazing,” as his vague alibi claims. The reports, taken at the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport, located roughly halfway between the two college towns, show fog, reduced visibility and low clouds at the time of the murders. Meteorologists say the fog was not thick enough to impede travel, but the night sky would only be clearly visible between breaks in the clouds.   A recent court filing also shows that defense attorneys want Venmo, PayPal, and bank records for the accused quadruple killer blocked from court. While the exact contents of these records are not discussed, the filing mentions a purchase from Under Armor on June 24, 2022, 5 months before the murders, and a purchase from Dick's sporting goods in the same month. Cobb County, Georgia, police and EMTs respond to a 911 call reporting an unconscious person just before 8:30 a.m. They find a woman’s body in a bush, her face partially covered by her disheveled sweater. Police say she has been dead for several hours and that there are signs of a struggle. Authorities identify the woman as Camillia Williams, a mother of five. Her family in Louisiana describes her as someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly and could hold a conversation with anyone. Police say the 52-year-old was strangled. Detectives with the Cobb County Police Department spend two days searching the neighborhood where Williams’ body was found. Investigators block off the street while collecting evidence and knock on neighbors’ doors, looking for witnesses and surveillance footage. A neighbor across the street from where Williams was found turns over Ring doorbell footage, revealing the entire attack on video. The footage shows a young man closely following Williams. When she turns to tell him to leave her alone, he rushes at her. The video shows the man wrapping Williams in a chokehold and dragging her to bushes in front of a home on Pat Mell Road. When she goes limp, he puts both knees on her neck and kneels there for several minutes, preventing her from breathing. He then casually walks away. Investigators identify the attacker as 21-year-old Honduran national Hector Sagastume. A recorded phone call between Kanye West and Sean Combs has been used in a new song. The recording leaked just as West released his latest track, Lonely Roads Still Go to Sunshine. The song features samples from the jailhouse call, a verse from Combs’ son, Christian “King” Combs, and West’s daughter, North. As West faces backlash from ex-wife Kim Kardashian over North’s inclusion, a source claims Combs now feels like “he’s collateral damage.” The source added that Combs believed the call was a sincere expression of concern for him and his family and is now embarrassed to be caught in the crossfire. Kardashian is fighting to stop West from releasing the song, calling it “irresponsible” and a blatant disregard for North’s future and reputation. She first reminded West that she holds a trademark for their daughter's name, then sought emergency mediation with a judge. West did not appear. Although his X post featuring the song was quickly deleted, fans had already reposted the audio across the internet. As Combs’ trial approaches, his defense team is pushing to block evidence from the courtroom. Attorneys argue that the widely circulated video of Combs attacking then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura was altered to misrepresent the altercation. Prosecutors, however, claim to have the original, unedited footage from the Intercontinental Hotel. Supporting their case is Combs’ own apology video, which appears to confirm the video's authenticity. Stephan Sterns wants to keep his trial private and is arguing to bar the public and media from the courtroom. Sterns’ public defender, Alesha Smith, presented a PowerPoint to the judge showing how many podcasts, TikTok, Reddit, and YouTube accounts are following the case. She called the coverage “unprecedented” and argued it would make a fair trial impossible. Minch Minchin, representing several news organizations, countered that Florida and U.S. courts consistently rule proceedings should remain open. “Prominence does not produce prejudice, and juror impartiality does not require ignorance,” Minchin said. Judge Keith Carsten said he would rule within 10 days. Meanwhile, authorities released 35 recorded jail calls between Sterns and his parents. In the recordings, Sterns said he found Maddie “ice cold” with her lips “turning blue.” He also said he wished he had called 911. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home after workers saw bodies through a window when no one answered the door. Gene Hackman, 95, his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, and a dog were found dead. Officers found the front door of Hackman’s two-story green stucco home slightly ajar but saw no signs of forced entry. During a search, deputies found all other buildings and the garage of the $3.8 million home locked and secured. The home did not appear to have been rummaged through, and no items were reported missing. An officer noted that nothing seemed "out of place." According to a search warrant affidavit, officers entering the home saw a bathroom to the left of the front door. The bathroom door was open, and Betsy Arakawa was lying on her right side, deceased. Police said she was wearing dark gray sweatpants and a light-colored sweatshirt. A black space heater was near her head, but the report did not state whether it was on. Officers also saw an open orange prescription bottle with pills scattered on the countertop. A deputy reported obvious signs of death, including body decomposition, facial bloating, and mummification in her hands and feet. Deputies then saw feet and legs near the kitchen. They found Gene Hackman dead in the mudroom. He was wearing gray sweatpants, a blue long-sleeve T-shirt, and brown slippers. He had a walking cane and a pair of sunglasses. Hackman showed similar signs of death as his wife. An autopsy was performed, but initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual. In a press conference, authorities said Arakawa died February 11 from hantavirus. However, new documents show she made multiple phone calls and was seen on February 12. Ricky Johnson, David Harrington, and Clayton McGeeney were last seen alive on January 7, 2024, watching the final regular-season Kansas City Chiefs game at the home of their friend, Jordan Willis. Two days later, authorities found their frozen bodies outside the house. After a yearlong investigation, prosecutors charged Jordan Willis and Ivory Carson in connection with the deaths, which gained national attention. Both men face three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivering a controlled substance. Police say Carson, known as "Blade Brown," supplied and sold cocaine to Willis and the victims. Investigators found Carson's DNA on a bag of fentanyl inside Willis' home. Willis and Carson remain in jail on a $100,000 cash bond. If convicted, they each face up to 10 years in prison. During the investigation, law enforcement initially said they did not suspect foul play. A toxicology report later confirmed that the men had cocaine, THC, and fentanyl in their systems. Police have since ruled the deaths as caused by "fentanyl and cocaine toxicity." As the case progressed, Willis moved out of the home and checked into rehab. A forensic analysis of Harrington’s phone uncovered text messages between Willis, McGeeney, Johnson, and others, linking Carson to the cocaine supply. Emily Pike, 14, sneaks away from the group home where she lives. When she does not return, Mesa police are contacted, and she is reported missing. Her mother is not informed until she has been missing for a week. Police say the group home is responsible for notifying her case manager, who would then contact Pike’s family or tribe. Authorities post her picture on social media, print flyers, and alert the media, stating that Emily Pike is missing and may have run away. Nearly a month after Pike disappears, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office reports that searchers found the remains of an unidentified female in a wooded area near U.S. 60, about 20 miles northeast of Globe, Arizona. The remains are difficult to identify but appear to belong to a missing Native American girl. Within 24 hours, authorities confirm the remains are those of 14-year-old Emily Pike. The Gila County Sheriff’s Office reports that detectives found the head and torso in large contractor trash bags, while the legs were in separate bags. Investigators search the area but do not find the arms and hands. This information, meant for law enforcement only, reaches friends and family without warning. A preliminary autopsy report notes visible trauma to Pike’s face and head. Authorities do not find clothing, jewelry, or identification with the remains. The cause of death remains undetermined. Investigators believe someone killed Pike elsewhere before dumping her dismembered remains. Her arms and hands remain missing. The sheriff’s office says investigators recovered surveillance footage from Mesa, where Emily was last seen alive, but have not found footage from the rural area where her remains were discovered. Officials urge anyone with information to come forward. The San Carlos Apache Tribe is offering a $75,000 reward for information leading to Pike’s killer. Law enforcement released the 911 recording after prosecutors unsealed a court document containing a transcript of the call. The filing responds to Kohberger’s argument that the jury should not hear the 911 call. His attorneys argue that the call was improperly submitted as evidence, claiming many statements in the recording are hearsay.   Judge John Judge previously ruled that the statements in question fall under the present sense impression and excited utterance exceptions. However, defense attorneys are raising the argument again before Ada County Judge Steven Hippler.   In the call, the roommates sound distressed as they report that someone is not waking up. Meanwhile, Kohberger's attorneys claim he was framed as they continue to fight for his acquittal.
