Madden Frustrated By First Half Showing As Wexford Defeat Condemns Clare To Division 3 For 2027

Clare senior football manager Paul Madden says he's frustrated by his side's first half performance which proved costly in The Banner's promotion hunt in the National Football League. A spirited second half display, where Clare outscored their opponents 2-11 to 0-5, wasn't enough as Wexford claimed a three point win in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg. The result paired with Westmeath's victory over Limerick means Clare will again remain in Division 3 for the 2027 campaign. Madden says they let the game get away from them in the second quarter.

Groev - Irish Artist Of The Week

Groev (pronounced 'Grove') are a Galway-based indie/folk band known for their warm, folky melodies, catchy hooks, and heartfelt storytelling. Groev formed in 2024, playing pubs to pay the bills and working on their original music. They released their debut single, Ben and Jerry’s, via Mahogany Songs in May 2025, and soon after supported Jamie McIntyre on his Irish and UK tour dates. Their biggest single to date, Tara Grove (released August 2025), has amassed over 200,000 Spotify streams. In November of last year, they embarked on their first national tour, which included sold-out shows upstairs at Róisín Dubh and upstairs in Whelan’s. Similar sound to Kodaline, Amble, and Kingfishr. Groev released "Subtle," their first love song and latest single, on Feb. 27, following the success of "Tara Grove," which surpassed 200,000 Spotify streams. Rory from the band said the song evolved organically during the writing process. "'Subtle' found its feet over time," he said. "Initially, I had no clue what I was writing, but then I started connecting with it through getting to know someone, not knowing what to do but just being happy." The track explores early romance through small, intimate moments. Opening with the line "Saw her smoking underneath the light / I asked her hand, but she wanted mine," the song captures autumn rain, skipping stones, and moonlit conversations between two people before life gets complicated. The release follows Groev's selection for Whelan's Ones to Watch 2026 as the band prepares for a busy year.

Parteen Basin Pipeline

Parteen Basin Pipeline Clare's local elected representatives have urged Clare County Council to be "stronger" in its condemnation of a proposed pipeline between the River Shannon and Dublin. The Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region, which would see an average of 2% of the River Shannon's flow at the Parteen Basin abstracted to serve the drinking water demand of the Greater Dublin Area, was a dominant topic of discussion at this week's meeting of the local authority. Elected members were asked to approve Chief Executive Gordon Daly's report on the effects of the proposed development on Clare. While the report states the project presents "some concerns" for the county and offers "no direct water supply benefit", some present described the report as "mild-mannered" and "lenient". It was agreed that an amendment penned by Killaloe Municipal District's elected representatives stating their opposition to the project will be included as an appendix to the report which will now be submitted to Uisce Éireann. Limerick Site Identified For New Midwest Hospital Campus: A Slap In The Face To People In Clare?

The Health Minister has pledged to enhance services at Ennis Hospital but has given no commitment to emergency care in Clare. Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has described a new “strategic site” acquired in Limerick to solve hospital overcrowding in the MidWest as “HIQA’s Option B and C Plus.” The Minister has described the €14 million, 43.8 acre site in Raheen as a strategic site for the MidWest Health system for the next thirty years, located a 28 minute drive away from Ennis and Nenagh. Over 40% of Clare’s population lives more than an hour’s drive from their nearest Emergency Department and the Minister said her vision for Ennis’s progression is similar to that of Bantry General Hospital in Cork, which doesn’t have an ED or proposals for one. Despite this, Minister Carroll MacNeill insists Clare “was at the centre of their plans” in the MidWest. However, health campaigners here have expressed "anger and deep frustration" following the announcement that a site has been identified for a new hospital campus for the Midwest. The Friends of Ennis Hospital claims 130,000 people in Clare along with a further 80,000 in Tipperary will see limited benefit from the hospital being located in the city. Health Minister Promises Ennis Enhancements But No Clare ED Commitment

The Health Minister has pledged to enhance services at Ennis Hospital, but has given no commitment to emergency care in Clare. During her official announcement today, Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has described a new "strategic site" acquired in Limerick to solve hospital overcrowding in the MidWest as "HIQA's Option B and C Plus." Health Minister Jennifer Carrol MacNeill visited Limerick this morning, where she confirmed details of the Midwest's new hospital. The Minister has described the €14 million, 43.8 acre site in Raheen as a strategic site for the MidWest Health system for the next thirty years, located a 28 minute drive away from Ennis and Nenagh. Her next step will be to appoint a project development board, which will develop healthcare services for the overall region and a report is due to be published later this year that will recommend additional services are provided in Clare. Last September, the Department of Health pledged to progress all three of HIQA's recommendations to solve hospital overcrowding in the region. The options included expanding the University Hospital Limerick Campus, extending the campus to another nearby site and delivering a new Model 3 hospital with a new ED in the MidWest. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill believes Option B and C can be delivered in Raheen. During her announcement today, which Clare media were not invited to attend, the Minister said emergency care in the region had to be expanded and that having two model 4 hospitals within 10 minutes of each other was a possibility. She also hasn't ruled out moving the maternity hospital to the Raheen site. Over 40% of Clare's population lives more than an hour's drive from their nearest Emergency Department and the Minister said her vision for Ennis's progression is similar to that of Bantry General Hospital in Cork, which doesn't have an ED or proposals for one. Despite this, Minister Carroll MacNeill insists Clare "was at the centre of their plans" in the MidWest.

Ennis Inner Relief Road Could Pave The Way For "Hundreds" Of New Homes

The construction of a long-awaited inner relief road in Ennis is expected to pave the way for "hundreds" of new homes. Clare County Council has confirmed that the proposed route connecting the Tulla Road and Gort Road remains on the agenda and is intended to be delivered within the next decade. A 520-metre stretch of the planned Ennis Northern Inner Relief Road link in the townland of Dulick was unveiled in May 2018. The road, which connects the Gort Road to the Ennis Information Age Park Building and the Clare Technology Park, was intended to be the first phase of the overall plan to build a link to the Tulla Road. Eight years on, the county town is no closer to seeing this project come to fruition, prompting Fianna Fáil councillors Clare Colleran-Molloy, Tom O'Callaghan and Antoinette Baker-Bashua to seek an update at this week's Clare County Council meeting. The local authority has stated that the project is included in the completed Local Transport Plan as well as the upcoming proposed variation to the County Development Plan. Councillor O'Callaghan says this means it's guaranteed to get funding. The council estimates that the overall project delivery time "with favourable timely decisions" would be "of the order of five to eight years". It's also revealed that it's considering a phased delivery with the section north of 'The Maples' towards 'Clauin Ros Leamháin' progressed as the first phase, followed by the section to the west including the railway crossing. This first phase, it says, could be completed in three to five years, while the overall scheme would cost 10 to 15 million euro "at current market rates". The progression of the project would give access to 7.5 hectares of zoned residential lands, which could result in the construction of roughly 260 homes. Councillor Baker-Bashua says it's a crucial development for this reason alone.
