Varese Sarabande CD Club - Part 2

In today's episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST, Jason Drury joins Erik Woods to present part two of their look at Varese Sarabande Records' latest three batches of CD club releases. Varese Sarabande CD Club began in the late '80s which was a mail-order CD club of great film scores not otherwise available on compact disc. It wasn't until 1989 did we get to see the first release. In the first batch of releases, which came out between 1989 and 1992, we got to finally hear on CD for the first time such scores as CHERRY 2000, FEDORA, VIBES, RED SONJA, RAGGEDY MAN, STAR N BARS, THE BURBS, WE'RE NO ANGELS, JAGGED EDGE and others for the first time on CD. In part two, you'll hear selections from DANTE'S PEAK by John Frizzell with themes by James Newton Howard, PAYCHECK by John Powell and LIONHEART by Jerry Goldsmith. You'll also hear a surprise suite at the end of the program from one of the earliest releases in the Varese Sarabande CD Club back in the late 80s. On the program, I recommended that you all listen to the LIONHEART episode of THE GOLDSMITH ODYSSEY. It's one of their very best episodes where they do a deep dive into all of the missing music and the numerous themes Goldsmith composed for the film. Check it out HERE! Also, head over to varesesarabande.com to purchase a copy of any of the albums you hear on the program today! —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Scored To Death Radio with J. Blake Fichera: The Sounds of Stephen King - Chapter Two

For decades Stephen King has inspired readers and artists, making him among the most successful authors of his generation. His impact on the world of cinema and television is arguably unmatched by any other novelist, and some of Hollywood’s most talented and respected filmmakers have adapted his work. However, what gets less attention is that an equally gifted, respected, and eclectic group of artists has created the music for the massive list of films and T.V. series/mini-series based on his writings. This is the second instalment into a limited series, in which host J. Blake Fichera takes you through the vast, beautiful and terrifying cinematic soundscape inspired by the horror texts of one of the most celebrated and prolific authors of the last 50 years—Stephen King. You'll hear selections from MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, DREAMCATCHER, SALEM'S LOT, THE DARK HALF, CAT'S EYE, FIRESTARTER, and many more. All Request Show #1

Erik Woods presents the first ALL REQUEST SHOW since 2004 on today’s new episode of THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Since launching the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon a few months ago, we’ve offered our patrons exclusive perks based on the tier they signed up for. One of those perks is participating in all request programs. All Request Shows were a norm for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO back on the FM dial between 1996 and 2006. They were some of my favourite shows. It gave my listeners a chance to participate in the programming of the show and was always a special program to produce. It’s been 17 years since the last all-request show so as a perk for some of our patrons we are now bringing back the all-request show on a bi-monthly basis. If you want to participate in future all-request shows, please head over to our Patreon page, and join the community in any tier that is $5 USD/month or above. Once you do so you will be able to participate in all upcoming all request programs. For this premiere all-request program, our participants included Max Hamulyak, Dave Williams, Victor Field, Don Mase, Alphonse Brown, Douglas Lacey, Williams Welch, Alan Rogers, Tim Burden and Joe Wiles. They requested tracks from such composers as Rachel Portman, John Powell, Ron Grainer, James Horner, John Barry, John Paesano, Hans Zimmer, David Newman, Jane Antonia Cornish and Bear McCreary. Let me tell you, the playlist is fantastic! Sure, some selections come from big blockbusters but there are other selections that come from more obscure fare. And one cue was from a score I had never heard before. With that being said, I hope you all enjoy the program. This was easily one of the most enjoyable shows I’ve produced in years. Again, for those that didn’t get a chance to participate and want to be a part of October’s all-request program, we’d love to have you join the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon family. But don’t feel like you have to join. I’m not forcing anyone to join. Remember this podcast will always be free to listen to but if you want to support the program and join the community we’ve formed on Patreon then we’d love to have you. Enjoy the show! —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. Soundtrack Alley: Waterworld

The tenth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score to the 1995 Kevin Reynolds directed post-apocalyptic adventure film, WATERWORLD, starring Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tina Majorino and Michael Jeter. Set in the distant future, the polar ice cap has completely melted, and the sea level has risen covering nearly all of the land. The plot of the film centres on an otherwise nameless antihero, "The Mariner", a drifter who sails the Earth in his trimaran. The original score for the film was composed by James Newton Howard, performed by The Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and was recorded by Bruce Botnick. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on MCA Soundtracks and was re-released in expanded form by La La Land Records 2017. On the program, you'll hear Randy and Erik talk about various topics including when they first saw the film, the bloated budget of the film, the use of practical vehicles and sets, the production design, modern composing tropes, how Hans Zimmer and Steve Porcaro assisted in the creation of this score, the contrast between high adventure and world music aesthetics, a detailed breakdown of six essential cues from the score and much more. Soundtrack Alley: Legend - Part Two

Part two of the ninth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO continues the analysis and discussion of the music written for the separate cuts of Ridley Scott’s 1985 epic dark fantasy adventure film, LEGEND, featuring music by Jerry Goldsmith (European Cut) and Tangerine Dream (American Cut). The conversation continues with an in-depth look at three more sequences; Jack accepting weapons and armour to become The Champion, a bewitched and seduced Lili dancing and the fall of Darkness. Joining fill-in host, Erik Woods, is the host of THE ARCHIVE, Jason Drury, host of OBSCURE SCORES, Robert Daniels and CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s in-house composer and host of COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS, David Coscina. The film revolves around Jack (Cruise), a pure being who must stop the Lord of Darkness (Curry) who plots to cover the world with eternal night. The original score for the film was composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the legendary Mike Ross-Trevor. Soundtrack Alley: Legend - Part One

The ninth episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO features a bit of a different format than other SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes. Regular host, Randy Andrews, decided to skip this episode and left it up to Erik Woods to host and moderate a roundtable discussion about the film, LEGEND. Joining Erik is the host of THE ARCHIVE, Jason Drury, host of OBSCURE SCORES, Robert Daniels and CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s in-house composer and host of COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS, David Coscina. LEGEND is a 1985 epic dark fantasy adventure directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Alice Playten, Billy Barty, Cork Hubbert, and Annabelle Lanyon. The film revolves around Jack (Cruise), a pure being who must stop the Lord of Darkness (Curry) who plots to cover the world with eternal night. Although the film wasn’t a critical hit it did win the British Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography for Alex Thomson, as well as being nominated for multiple other awards including an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and BAFTA nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup Artist, and Best Special Visual Effects. The original score for the film was composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the legendary Mike Ross-Trevor. However, due to the massive changes made from the European version to the American version of the film, it was decided to remove Goldsmith’s score and have the German electronic group, Tangerine Dream, write and perform a new score. In part one of our look at the production of LEGEND and the use of music in both versions, Erik, Jason, Robert and David talk about various topics including when they first saw the film, which version of the film they like, the film's production design, the gorgeous cinematography, Ridley Scott’s history as a director, a comparison of Jerry Goldsmith’s and Tangerine Dream’s scores and a detailed comparison of “The Unicorn” sequence, which Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream both scored. In addition, David Coscina’s participation in this discussion offers a unique perceptive to the program as he brings his expertise as a composer to the table and provides detailed musical analysis of both scores and performs specific sections of each score on his piano to help paint a clear picture as to what the Jerry Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream were bringing to the film. Jerry Goldsmith’s original motion picture score is available on Silva Screen Records and Tangerine Dream's score is available through Varese Sarabande Records. Part two of the program, where we compare more cues from each score, will be made available shortly. When communications are lost with a human colony on the moon on which her crew first encountered the alien creatures, Ripley agrees to return to the site with a troop of colonial marines to investigate. The film also stars features Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, and Carrie Henn in supporting roles. The original score for the film was composed and conducted by James Horner, performed by The London Symphony Orchestra and recorded by the legendary Eric Tomlinson. The original soundtrack recording was released on Varese Sarabande Records in 1986 and was expanded by the same label in 2001. On the program you'll hear Randy and Erik talk about various topics including when they first saw the film, its use of practical special effects, the production design, the sound design, how disrespected the music was in the film, accusations of Horner self-plagiarism, Horner's ridiculously short composing schedule, writing "Bishop's Countdown" essentially overnight, the use of "Resolution" in Die Hard, the "Alien Stinger", a detailed breakdown of six essential cues from the score and much more. Soundtrack Alley: Jurassic Park

The seventh episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score to the 1993 Steven Spielberg groundbreaking action/adventure film, JURASSIC PARK, based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, BD Wong, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards The film takes place on Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond's grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island. The original score for the film was composed and conducted by John Williams, performed by The Hollywood Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The original soundtrack recording was released on MCA Records in 1993 and was expanded by La La Land Records in 2017 that coupled this score along with Williams' other score in the series, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK. The Flagship Show: "Ad Lib. with Erik Woods" Pilot Episode

On the program today Erik Woods goes unscripted. Why? Well, here's Erik to tell you why. —— "The idea for this show, pitched to me by a fellow film music fan, is an off the cuff, personal, ad-libbed, "rambling", non-scripted show, where I just talk about what is on my mind and play a little music as well to help support my "rants". This will not replace the more traditional THE FLAGSHIP SHOW but would allow me to offer my opinions, no matter how scatterbrained, into a show that isn't so meticulously written, researched, etc. I'm looking for a way to shorten the time it takes to produce a show and this might be a great solution to that problem. The production values will stay the same but the content will be focused on more personal opinions concerning film, TV and video game music. Certain segments might sound like a "love letter" to film music while other segments will have a more critical point of view to keep the show balanced. I think of this show as a bit of a film music therapy session, if you will, much like my "Heart To Heart" episode that I uploaded a few years ago. So, this is the pilot episode, which will give you an idea of what the format and content will be like. After the show is over I would love to hear from you with your feedback… positive or negative. I want to make sure this program is worth my and your while. I don't want to waste your time listening to trash as much as I don't want to waste my time producing trash. So if you hate this show, please tell me. But if you love it contact me as well. Email me at or leave a message for me on social media with the details. Also, if you have any ideas for topics of discussion please let me know. I'd like to know what interests YOU! I value your opinion so let me have it. I also need a show name. I've called this pilot episode AD LIB. WITH ERIK WOODS. If you have something better please offer it to me. If I chose your name then I'll be sure to thank you on every future episode going forward. Thanks." —— On the program today you will hear Erik discuss organizing music collections, Jerry Goldsmith's score to PATTON and TORA! TORA! TORA! and the 1997 re-recording by Varese Sarabande Records of those scores, the idiotic use of sound effects in RCA Victor’s otherwise brilliant re-recording of Sergei Prokofiev’s ALEXANDER NEVSKY, a new segment called “A Score I Love From A Film I Haven’t Seen” featuring Silva Screen Records re-recording of Jerome Moross’ THE BIG COUNTRY, the rumored composers of THE MATRIX 4 with a selection from Elliot Goldenthal’s DEMOLITION MAN (Varese Sarabande Records) and a random score selection to end the show. Interview with Benjamin Symons

Welcome to another episode of the continuing series of film, TV and video game composer interviews on the Cinematic Sound Radio Network. Benjamin Symons is a Composer, musician and songwriter from London, England. He has had great successes making a name for himself in the UK independent film and trailer music circuit. His reputation for quality, drive, enthusiasm and fast turn around in seemingly impossible deadlines while always keeping to a brief and tapping into the emotional core of the scene ensures he is the go to composer for those who use him time and time again. He has recently, after honing his trade on scoring short films, has made the transition to the feature film world. His first was the independent low budget sci-fi adventure INVASION EARTH in 2019. Then earlier this year, 2020, POINT OF NO RETURN. His latest score is for the horror film HOSTS. Written and Directed by Adan Leader and Richard Oakes, the plot concerns a family who falls victim to a series of violent murders when they invite their neighbours, who unknown to them have become possessed by vengeful spirits, over for Xmas dinner. Symon’s music proves that he is adept in the horror genre as in any other genre particularly in one cue the Skull Cracker suite where he utilizes traditional Christmas tunes in an imaginatively chilling way. In November 2020 for the Cinematic Sound Radio Network, Jason Drury talked to Benjamin Symons via Zoom at his home in London, England. During the interview they talked about his career to date, his work on his latest score HOSTS and the music he has written away from the film world during the Covid Pandemic. Also during the show, you will be hearing music from HOSTS as well as more from the musical world of Benjamin Symons. Enjoy! —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. 2020 Christmas Special

Today program is our 2020 annual Christmas Special. Before we get into the details of the show I just want to again personally offer my thanks to the great team here at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO including regular contributors Jason Drury, Eric Silver, and Robert Daniels. Randy Andrews had been part of the team for a while now with his ANIME SPECTACULAR program but I just wanted to once again say how happy I am that he has brought SOUNDTRACK ALLEY over to the network this year. We'll have one more episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY before the year is out featuring music from a classic film by a legendary composer. David Coscina, our in-house composer, also started a new show, COMPOSER CONVERSATIONS. And of course, we can't forget the voice of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, Tim Burden. It’s been a tough year for everyone - not only here on the network - but all over the world. Soundtrack Alley: Interview with Elizabeth Phillipson-Weiner

Today on Soundtrack Alley, you’ll hear Randy Andrew’s interview with composer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Elizabeth Phillipson-Weiner that was recorded three weeks ago via Skype. Elizabeth was born and raised just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Experienced in a wide variety of genres of music, Elizabeth loves to connect with filmmakers and the collaborative art of film scoring. Her music combines unique synth sounds with organic instruments to create bespoke sound palates for each project. Her scores have premiered in films at the Tribeca Film Festival, Hollyshorts, Urbanworld Film Festival, and Raindance. She’s written the music for everything from non-profit campaigns to congressional campaigns. She is currently scoring a feature film directed by Stacey Maltin for Besties Make Movies. We discussed her early work and how she got involved with film music, her work on film festivals and the amazing work through the Tribeca Film Festival. Interview with Carlos Rafael Rivera

Welcome to another episode of the continuing series of film, TV and video game composer interviews on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK. Carlos Rafael Rivera is an EMMY Award-winning composer for film and television. A protégé of Randy Newman, he earned a DMA in Composition at USC’s Thornton School, where he studied with Donald Crockett and Stephen Hartke. As a guitarist, he has performed onstage as opening act for The Who at the Hollywood Bowl; recorded studio sessions for Island/Def Jam, and Universal Records; and had songs featured on NETFLIX’ FIREFLY LANE, ABC’s SCRUBS, MTV, and VH-1. As a composer, Rivera has a unique ability to incorporate a large diversity of musical influences into his captivating compositions, which reflect his multi-cultural upbringing in Central America and the United States. He has served as Composer-in-Residence with the Miami Symphony Orchestra and was a musical consultant for “Invitation to World Literature,” an educational series funded by the Annenberg Foundation and produced by WGBH and is a sought out guest composer and lecturer throughout the globe. He is also Assistant Professor and Director of the Media Writing and Production Program at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Carlos first met Oscar-nominated film/TV maker Scott Frank over 15 years ago when Scott responded to an ad for music lessons that Carlos had posted at a local Pasadena music store. What started as guitar lessons grew into a years-long friendship, and eventually led to an amazing collaborative partnership beyond the composer’s wildest dreams. Their first collaboration was on the action-drama feature, A Walk Among the Tombstones, starring Liam Neeson. Carlos went on to score Scott’s western drama series GODLESS, for which he won a Primetime Emmy for his "Main Title Theme" and also earned a nomination for his score. Their third and latest collaboration is the Netflix limited series THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT. The psychological drama series is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis and follows an orphan in late-1950s Kentucky named Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) who discovers she has an incredible talent for chess. In October 2020, for the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK, Jason Drury talked to Carlos Rafael Rivera via Zoom at his home in Miami, Florida. During the interview, they talked extensively about his score for THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, his working relationship with Scott Frank and of his other two collaborations with Frank; A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES and GODLESS. Also during the show, you will be hearing music from all 3 productions but extensively from The Queen Gambit, without doubt, one of the best scores of 2020.
