The late, legendary composer John Barry was due to turn 90 on November 3, 2023. With host, Jason Drury and John Barry enthusiast Ian MacDonald, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is happy to present a special edition of TALKING SOUNDTRACKS in honour of this occasion. Before five-time Academy Award winner John Barry rose to prominence as a film composer, Ian MacDonald was already a fan of his. Ian got in touch with Jason towards the end of 2022, expressing his desire to discuss his admiration for John Barry's music and to share some of the anecdotes about the composer. In February 2023 via Zoom at his home in Bridgewater, Somerset, Jason chatted with Ian about John Barry’s iconic James Bond scores, Ian’s memories of the concerts and the time he met John Barry for the first time at a recording session at Abbey Road Studios, London. In this episode, David Coscina catches up with Christopher Willis on his recent work, which includes the incredible music for the episode DEMON 79 from the TV series BLACK MIRROR as well as his lyrical score for the feature animated film LAMYA'S POEM. Willis is an Emmy Award-winning composer, arranger, songwriter, and pianist whose diverse career spans film and television soundtracks, interactive media, popular music, and concert works. He trained as a concert pianist at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later as a musicologist, earning a PhD in eighteenth-century music from Cambridge University. His film work includes THE DEATH OF STALIN and THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD, while his work in television spans projects such as VEEP, MICKY MOUSE CARTOON SHORTS, and SCHMIGADOON! He has also recently worked as an orchestral arranger on Eva Cassidy's I Can Only Be Me, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. Today's guest on TALKING SOUNDTRACKS has composed music for more than thirty feature films, several TV shows, video games, and a lengthy ballet performed by the Finnish National Opera. His name is Panu Aaltio. Panu is most recognized for his poignant work on major nature documentaries, but his lyrical orchestral sound has also adorned dramatic scores, including SUPER FURBALL SAVES THE FUTURE and the exciting Baltic Sea adventure FINDERS OF THE LOST YACHT. Another of his recent projects is 5000 Blankets, released in the US at the end of 2022, which follows the story of a woman and her young son, who set out to find her husband when he goes missing after having a mental breakdown, which sparks a movement in their city. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Panu via cleanfeed in Helsinki, Finland, at the end of January 2023. They discussed his work for television and film, his award-winning music for nature documentaries, his aspirations for the future, and of course, his amazing score for 5000 BLANKETS. Leigh Phillips is a composer, orchestrator, and producer with experience in creating unique compositions and orchestrations for media, concert performances, and CD recordings. In May 2023 for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS ON THE CINEMATIC SOUND PODCAST, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Leigh Phillips from his home in Prague. In part one of our two-part conversation Leigh discussed his musical roots, how he got into orchestration work and score reconstruction, and how he began his association with James Fitzpatrick and Tadlow Records. Part two discusses his work on Goldsmith re-recordings such as BLACK PATCH and GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATRE, his thoughts on film music today, and his fears about the employment of artificial intelligence in future film soundtracks. Before I left Bute Island Radio, I produced two complete episodes, with one other episode still in the planning stages. One episode made it to air; the others did not. Leigh Phillips is a composer, orchestrator, and producer with experience in creating unique compositions and orchestrations for media, concert performances, and CD recordings. In May 2023 for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS ON THE CINEMATIC SOUND PODCAST, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Leigh Phillips from his home in Prague. MURDOCH MYSTERIES is a Canadian television drama series that premiered on CityTV on January 20, 2008, and airs on CBC in Canada as well as 120 countries around the world including Alibi in the UK. The series is based on characters from the Detective Murdoch novels by Maureen Jennings and stars Yannick Bisson as the fictional William Murdoch, a police detective working in Toronto, Ontario in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The series also stars Hélène Joy, Thomas Craig and Johnny Harris. The show has endured for so long—it is currently in its sixteenth season—that Robert Carli, the series music composer, has become one of its most valuable and enduring figures. In December 2022, for Talking Soundtracks, Jason Drury talked to Robert Carli via Cleanfeed at his studio in Toronto, Canada, not far away from where Murdoch Mysteries is filmed. During the conversation, Carli's talked about his musical history and how his music has changed over the course of the series 16 years and counting. It's a fascinating insight into the work of a composer on a long-running television series. During the show, you will also be hearing samples of Robert’s music from the series. Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. That's right folks, the Oscars still suck! While they managed to bring back all of the categories they disrespected last year and will present them live again on this year's broadcast, the Academy's Music Branch, on the other hand, I think has clearly lost its mind. Not only are the nominees for best original score this year incredibly lacklustre, but they also took it one step further by nominating one of the most excruciating, annoying, utterly distracting film scores I've ever heard, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT by Volker Bertelmann. Not since Hans Zimmer's DUNKIRK have I experienced a score so repulsive that I nearly walked out of the theatre because of the music. One of Bertelmann's first instructions from director Edward Berger was to "please do something that is destroying the pictures that is not, you know, underlining what we already see." And then there was further instruction to literally make the score sound as bad as possible by "want(ing) to have a snare drum that is played by somebody who can't play the snare drum" Seriously?! And that ladies and gentlemen is something that seemed to really tickle the music branch in all the right places. Remember folks, different = good! Forget about the story, or complementing the picture, elevating the drama... Nah, just make some noise that sounds like a three-year-old played it! So, with that, I once again am boycotting the Academy Awards this time because of the Music Branches' tin ears. By the way, not all of the music branch members feel this way, and some of them have really good taste in good film music, but the majority of them are, in my opinion, always out to lunch! So since we are spending another year trying hard to ignore the Oscars (I guess I'm failing to do so by doing this show), I thought I'd highlight the people who I feel genuinely, and honestly do some of the best work celebrating film music, THE INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC CRITICS ASSOCIATION (IFMCA). Just to be as transparent as possible, I am a proud member of the IFMCA and I genuinely do think we at the IFMCA do the best in curating the best scores of the year in our annual awards. That might be an arrogant, egotistical statement, but that's what I believe. In an effort to prove that the IFMCA, more than any other awards organisation, presents the most accurate depiction of the year's top film scores, I will be comparing it to the Oscars and their historical list of nominees and winners from 1998-2022 to the IFMCA's nominees and winners over that same time. In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talked to the four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C Smith, about his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER. It's alive! The Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 has been brought back from the dead! In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show. I said, "No". I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment.
