Jason then presents two suites, from two scores written for the same film, Alfred Hitchcock’s FRENZY (Quartet Records). Firstly, you'll hear music from Henry Mancini’s rejected score and then you'll hear the score used in the film. MURDOCH MYSTERIES is a Canadian television drama series that premiered on CityTV on January 20, 2008, and airs on CBC in Canada as well as 120 countries around the world including Alibi in the UK. The series is based on characters from the Detective Murdoch novels by Maureen Jennings and stars Yannick Bisson as the fictional William Murdoch, a police detective working in Toronto, Ontario in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The series also stars Hélène Joy, Thomas Craig and Johnny Harris. The show has endured for so long—it is currently in its sixteenth season—that Robert Carli, the series music composer, has become one of its most valuable and enduring figures. In December 2022, for Talking Soundtracks, Jason Drury talked to Robert Carli via Cleanfeed at his studio in Toronto, Canada, not far away from where Murdoch Mysteries is filmed. During the conversation, Carli's talked about his musical history and how his music has changed over the course of the series 16 years and counting. It's a fascinating insight into the work of a composer on a long-running television series. During the show, you will also be hearing samples of Robert’s music from the series. Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk's death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy's underappreciated score. WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven't seen the new series yet, you've been warned; there are SPOILERS in this episode. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. Jason Drury welcomes renowned composer Christopher Young to this special episode of TALKING SOUNDTRACKS. Young is a composer and orchestrator who has over 133 credits to his name and has been nominated for a Golden Globe and two Emmys. In part one, they talked about Chris’s recent work on the Apple + TV Series ECHO 3 and he talked about his illustrious career from its beginnings right up to Young scoring his seminal works on the HELLRAISER series of films. In part two Young talks more about his career to date, his views on film music today and how he would like to be remembered by his fans. Also, during the show, Jason will be playing samples of music from his film scores which have made the composer one of the foremost talents in film music today. That's right folks, the Oscars still suck! While they managed to bring back all of the categories they disrespected last year and will present them live again on this year's broadcast, the Academy's Music Branch, on the other hand, I think has clearly lost its mind. Not only are the nominees for best original score this year incredibly lacklustre, but they also took it one step further by nominating one of the most excruciating, annoying, utterly distracting film scores I've ever heard, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT by Volker Bertelmann. Not since Hans Zimmer's DUNKIRK have I experienced a score so repulsive that I nearly walked out of the theatre because of the music. One of Bertelmann's first instructions from director Edward Berger was to "please do something that is destroying the pictures that is not, you know, underlining what we already see." And then there was further instruction to literally make the score sound as bad as possible by "want(ing) to have a snare drum that is played by somebody who can't play the snare drum" Seriously?! And that ladies and gentlemen is something that seemed to really tickle the music branch in all the right places. Remember folks, different = good! Forget about the story, or complementing the picture, elevating the drama... Nah, just make some noise that sounds like a three-year-old played it! So, with that, I once again am boycotting the Academy Awards this time because of the Music Branches' tin ears. By the way, not all of the music branch members feel this way, and some of them have really good taste in good film music, but the majority of them are, in my opinion, always out to lunch! So since we are spending another year trying hard to ignore the Oscars (I guess I'm failing to do so by doing this show), I thought I'd highlight the people who I feel genuinely, and honestly do some of the best work celebrating film music, THE INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC CRITICS ASSOCIATION (IFMCA). Just to be as transparent as possible, I am a proud member of the IFMCA and I genuinely do think we at the IFMCA do the best in curating the best scores of the year in our annual awards. That might be an arrogant, egotistical statement, but that's what I believe. In an effort to prove that the IFMCA, more than any other awards organisation, presents the most accurate depiction of the year's top film scores, I will be comparing it to the Oscars and their historical list of nominees and winners from 1998-2022 to the IFMCA's nominees and winners over that same time. The show is a long one, almost as long as an Oscar telecast. I hope you enjoy and please let me know if you agree or disagree with my assessment of the Oscars and the IFMCA in the comments below. In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talked to the four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C Smith, about his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER. In May 2022, Jason had the opportunity to talk to Steven again about his first book, published in 1991, about another pioneering and influential composer in the history of film music, A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann. Part one of their interview concerned Herrmann’s radio career, his collaborations with Orson Welles leading to the beginning of his film music career with Citizen Kane. In Part 2, they discuss the composer’s career up to his premature death in 1975, and feature the most important partnership in his career, with director Alfred Hitchcock. It's alive! The Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 has been brought back from the dead! In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talked to the four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C Smith, about his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER. In May 2022, Jason had the opportunity to talk to Steven again about his first book, published in 1991, about another pioneering and influential composer in the history of film music, A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann. In part one of this in-depth two-part series, Smtih discusses how the book came to be and dives into Bernard Herrmann's varied and occasionally contentious musical career including details on how he began his career in radio, his encounter with and collaboration with Orson Welles, and the start of his film music career. In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show. I said, "No". I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment. So, I slept on it, woke up the next day and wrote Blake back saying, "You know what... I got to thinking last night and I think we should still do the Holiday Celebration episode anyway. It's something that all of us at CSR can work on together. So, yes, we are going to do our annual Christmas show as well as the All Request Show." So there, you can thank Blake for this show and we will always put together an annual Christmas show for you from now on. I promise! On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war. Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue "Into The Starscape" The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality.
