Scored To Death Radio: Profondo Goblin: A History, Part 3 - The Soundtracks 1980 - 2001
The Italian progressive rock band Goblin found unexpected success throughout the mid to late 1970s as one of their country’s premiere film score creators—crafting music that helped shape the sound of horror films to this day. However, stereotyping and creative tensions caused the group’s line-up of members to change frequently and even breakup in the following decades. On this episode of Scored to Death Radio, host (and author) J. Blake Fichera continues his detailed exploration into Goblin’s complicated history and their extensive TV & film work—this time focusing on the years 1980 through 2001, and playing selections from their scores for Tenebre, Phenomena, The Church, and more. The Flagship Show: National Film Score Day 2022 - Random Tracks
Happy National Film Score Day! National Film Score Day was created on April 3rd, 2018 by Jeffrey D. Kern of the defunct internet film music radio station MOVIE SCORES AND MORE RADIO, and is officially recognized by the National Day Calendar. National Film Score Day "was created to celebrate film scores and the talented composers that compose those musical masterworks called film scores!" You can read more about it by CLICKING HERE! We've only officially celebrated National Film Score Day here at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO once, but I would like for it to be something we here celebrate every April 3rd. We commemorated National Film Score Day with 12 tracks chosen at random on today's special broadcast. I didn't know what I wanted to do to celebrate the occasion, so I decided to do my best to incorporate the number 4 into the festivities, as today is the 4th anniversary of the event! I went into my digital library and made a smart playlist to collect all of the 4-minute cues in my collection. Everything was reduced to 760 as a result of this. I didn't want to waste an entire day trying to choose 12 tracks from that list, so I went to random.org and had them choose the cues for me. Each track was assigned a number and the playlist was arranged alphabetically by title. After that, I began recording and did the random draw "live" therefore I had no idea what I was going to play. This was a lot of fun and I hope to do something like this again in the near future. You can see the entire playlist of tracks by going to the show notes on our website. Thanks again to Jeffrey D. Kern for creating this day in celebration of the art form we all love! —— Special thanks to our Patreon supporters: Matt DeWater, David Ballantyne, Mindtrickzz, Joe Wiles, Rich Alves, Maxime, William Welch, Tim Burden, Alan Rogers, Dave Williams, Max Hamulyák, Jeffrey Graebner, Douglas Lacey, Don Mase, Victor Field, Jochen Stolz, Emily Mason, Eric Skroch, Alexander Schiebel, Alphonse Brown, John Link, Andreas Wennmyr, Matt Berretta, Eldaly Morningstar, Elizabeth, Glenn McDorman, Chris Malone, Steve Karpicz, Deniz Çağlar, Brent Osterberg, Jérôme Flick, Sarah Brouns, Aaron Collins, Randall Derchan, Paul Helmuth Angela Rabatin, Michael Poteet, Larry Reese, Thomas Tinneny, William Burke, Clint Morgan & Rudy Amaya. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. The Flagship Show: The Oscars Suck! Or Erik's Favourite Scores of 2021 - Part 1
That's right folks, the Oscars suck! But we've suspected that for many years now. But this year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, officially, publicly, declared their show to be an utter joke! Now, they didn't say that directly, but, according to Variety... "Several major Academy Awards will not be presented on the air during this year’s Oscars in an effort to present a more streamlined and television-friendly broadcast. Eight honors will instead be awarded during off-air parts of the show and then edited into the telecast." What are the eight categories that the Academy deemed to be meaningless? "The awards that will be handed out earlier in the ceremony are for documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live action short and sound. The ceremony will start one hour before the on-camera portion begins in order to accommodate the changes." And there you have it... proof that the Academy has NEVER cared about secondary categories. They don't even pay attention to them. Do you REALLY think a major producer or actor is sitting at home pondering who they'll pick for the best animated short film? Of course not! It's a popularity contest. The flavour of the month! It's farse! So, yes, the Oscars officially suck! As a result, I've chosen to boycott the Oscars until they clean up their act. Actually, I haven't watched the Oscars in a few years since seeing millionaires pat themselves on the back every year no longer interests me. And the show is always too lengthy, with overlong dance routines, uninteresting montages, and politically heated acceptance speeches that no one wants to watch or listen to. But, hey, let's continue to show complete performances of each of the five nominated songs. That seems to be the only musical category that matters to the Academy. Why watch a composer like Hildur Guðnadóttir win the first-ever Academy Award for best original dramatic score by a woman? I'm sure no one wanted to watch her inspirational speech, right? Over the years, I've dedicated a number of broadcasts to the Academy Awards. I've even mentioned how many Oscars a composer has earned on several occasions. That will no longer be the case here at Cinematic Sound Radio. I'm not going to mention the Academy again until they alter their methods, and I'm also not going to promote their phoney awards. The Oscars Suck! Instead, I'll discuss what I enjoyed last year. So, in part one of this two-part programme, I'll talk about and play music from the 2021 soundtracks that I liked. However, there is one significant modification to the show's format. I'm not going to do a countdown. I'm just going to spotlight a few scores that I really like and play either a single track or a whole suite. Having said that, I'm going to save my favourite 2021 score till the conclusion of part two. On the program today, you'll hear music from Nicolas Britell, Hans Zimmer, Simon Franglen, Gordy Haab, Alexander Temple, Alex Seaver, Bear McCreary, Christophe Beck, Natalie Holt, Oscar M. Leanizbarrutia, James Newton Howard and Craig Flaster. Patreon Playlist Show #2 - Programmed By Max Hamulyak
Today you get to enjoy the second programmed by one of our patrons from the CONDUCTOR TIER over at our Patreon page. . In this tier, which is $10 USD ($13.50 CAN), donors get all of the benefits of lower tiers PLUS they earn the opportunity to program their very own personal one-hour(ish) show once a year. Max Hamulyak, a fan of the show since 2016, took advantage of this opportunity and this is the show that he put together for us to enjoy! Here is how Max described the inspiration for the show. "I chose tracks from about four minutes and up, so it would be more like lengthy suites. For the "All Patreon Request Show" I went with Bear McCreary's "Storming New Caprica", a series and composers I thoroughly enjoy, but since space is very limited in the hour for this show I did not pick him this time. I think there is something in it for everyone." Max crafted an eclectic playlist for you all to enjoy! If you would like to program your own show then all you need to do is head over to our Patreon page and sign up for the CONDUCTOR TIER. We'd love to have you join the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST Patreon family. But don't feel like you have to join. I'm not forcing anyone to join. Remember this podcast will always be free to listen to but if you want to support the program and join the community we've formed on Patreon then we'd love to have you. Scored To Death Radio: Profondo Goblin: A History, Part 1 - The Soundtracks 1975-1977
In 1975, one of Italy’s biggest and most innovative filmmakers asked a group of unknown young musicians to record the score for his latest film and forever altered the course of film music. The filmmaker was Dario Argento, the film was DEEP RED (aka PROFONDO ROSSO) and the musicians were a progressive rock band named Goblin. Now, SCORED TO DEATH RADIO host & author J. Blake Fichera takes listeners on a detailed sonic journey through the music and history of one of Italy’s and film music’s most influential bands, with an epic multi-part podcast series about Goblin. This debut episode explores the band’s humble beginnings—how they formed, how they got their name, how they came to work on film scores, etc.—and dives deep into their film and television soundtracks from 1975 through 1977—including DEEP RED and SUSPIRIA. So, pull up a seat, and get comfy with a glass of J&B because SCORED TO DEATH RADIO is setting sail on a fantastic voyage into 1970s Italy with the band Goblin. On February 8, 2022, composer John Williams turns 90 years old. To honour one of the greatest film composers of all time THE CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST is proud to present a mammoth six-part podcast series dedicated to the five-time Academy Award winner. You might actually be familiar with this series already. I produced a similar series back in 2012 to celebrate Williams' 80th birthday. While that show was successful, I felt that it could be approved upon and updated. So, I've used John Williams' birthday as an excuse to completely revamp the series by re-editing the scripts, re-recording all the dialogue and completely re-editing the shows. In addition, I will be producing a brand new sixth part to cover the years 2013-2021, which will launch on John Williams birthday, February 8, 2022. A lot of effort and time went into producing this new version of the series and I hope you enjoy the results. In part one of this special, we will be presenting an overview of "Johnny" Williams' work spanning 1961-1969 including such television shows as CHECKMATE, LOST IN SPACE, THE TIME TUNNEL, LAND OF THE GIANTS and THE GHOSTBREAKER. We will also be presenting music from some of Williams' earliest film work including DIAMOND HEAD, HOW TO STEAL A MILLION, NONE BUT THE BRAVE, HEIDI, GOODBYE MR. CHIPS, THE REIVERS and much more. Enjoy! Talking Soundtracks: Interview with Steven C. Smith Part 2
During a seven-decade career that spanned from 19th century Vienna to the golden age of Hollywood, Max Steiner did more than any other composer to help introduce and establish the language of film music. In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talks to author, four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C. Smith, via Zoom at his home in Southern California. In part one of this two-part edition, they talked about how the book came about, and begin to delve into the musical career of Max Steiner. In part two, Smith talks about Steiner’s music for the films of Humphrey Bogart and Errol Flynn, his friendship with Victor Young, and at the twilight of his career, an unexpected hit in the pop charts. Talking Soundtracks: Interview with Leanna Primiani
Welcome to the latest edition of TALKING SOUNDTRACKS on THE CINEMATIC RADIO PODCAST NETWORK. IVORY WAVE is an experimental horror short that unsettles an audience while asking them to empathize with sudden tragedy. Much of Ivory Wave appears to be dreamlike- suspended somewhere just outside the bounds of reality. The film asks the viewer to surrender themselves to the immersive story. The slight disorientation that is presented mirrors how one might feel when in a drug-induced state. Brilliantly, the film surrenders itself to this disorientation as the lead loses himself to grief and substance abuse. The music for the film, written for string quartet and bespoke modular electronics, was by award-winning composer and conductor LEANNA PRIMIANI. In October 2021 for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS via Zoom, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking with Leanna Primiani at her studio in Santa Monica, California. During the interview, they talked about IVORY WAVE, her career to date and her future musical plans as well as playing excepts from IVORY WAVE and more from this new talent in film music. Scored To Death Radio with J. Blake Fichera: The Sounds of Stephen King - Chapter Three
For decades Stephen King has inspired readers and artists, making him among the most successful authors of his generation. His impact on the world of cinema and television is arguably unmatched by any other novelist, and some of Hollywood’s most talented and respected filmmakers have adapted his work. However, what gets less attention is that an equally gifted, respected, and eclectic group of artists has created the music for the massive list of films and T.V. series/mini-series based on his writings. In this third installment of The Sounds of Stephen King limited series, host J. Blake Fichera continues his exploration into the vast, beautiful and terrifying cinematic soundscapes inspired by the texts of one of horror’s greatest and most celebrated authors. You'll hear selections from MISERY, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, IT: CHAPTER ONE & TWO, NEEDFUL THINGS, CHRISTINE, and many more. Patreon Playlist Show One - Scottish Film Music by Alan Rogers
Today you get to enjoy our very first show programmed by one of our patrons from the CONDUCTOR TIER over at our Patreon page. In this tier, donors get all of the benefits of lower tiers PLUS they earn the opportunity to program their very own personal one-hour(ish) show once a year. Friend, patron and long time listener of the show, Alan Rogers, took advantage of this opportunity and this is the show that he put together for us to enjoy. Here is how Alan described the inspiration for the show. "Scotland has been an inspiration for numerous films and Scottish composers have been prominent in film and television scoring. This show showcases some of the music from Scottish composers and the films and TV shows where Scotland played a prominent role in their creation. The show is divided into three parts. Firstly, one section features music from films set in Scotland – some historical tales but other more contemporary. Second, there is a section featuring the music from documentaries whose subject relates to some aspects of the history of Scotland as well as the natural history of the nation. Finally, there’s a selection of tracks from films where the filmmakers have used the spectacular scenery of Scotland for their movies. Also, interspersed between these sections are featured music written by Scottish-born composers." I think Alan did a fantastic job curating this show for us and I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did narrating it! After the show was produced, Alan sent me this very kind message. "Thanks Erik for reinvigorating my enthusiasm for film music with your Patreon. Offering me the opportunity of an alternate experience with the genre is great. Thank you!" I responded by saying… "Thanks for the kind note, Alan. Truly though, the Patreon has reinvigorated my love for film music as well as podcasting. It’s been a fantastic experience so far and I love interacting with my biggest fans and making them (you) happy!" With that being said, I hope you all enjoy the program. And when you are done with this show head over to Alan's soundtrack review site at Reel Music. The Archive with Jason Drury: Spy Films
Welcome to a special presentation of THE ARCHIVE on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST NETWORK. Today you will hear music from Spy Films. In celebration of the long-awaited release of the latest James Bond film, NO TIME TO DIE, your host Jason Drury plays music from film and TV shows which were inspired by the exploits of 007 or have a link to the secret agent himself. After starting the show with the opening cue "The Ace Tomato Comedy" from the 1985 spy comedy SPIES LIKE US (Varese Sarabande) by Elmer Bernstein, Jason then presents a suite from the 1976 spy thriller THE EIGER SANCTION (Intrada Records) by John Williams. From there you'll hear selections from an episode from the classic 1960s TV spy series THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E (FSM Records), and ALEXANDER THE GREATER AFFAIR with a score provided by Gerald Fried and main theme by Jerry Goldsmith. Then Jason showcases selections from Jerry Goldsmith’s score to the 1966 spy spoof OUR MAN FLINT (Varese Sarabande Records) and the short-lived TV series from 1979-80 A MAN CALLED SLOANE (La La Land Records) with music by Patrick Williams. The show concludes with a brace of cues from the 1990s submarine spy thriller THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (Intrada Records) composed by Basil Poledouris.
