Episode 174 - Tim Adams on Creating Opportunity for ALL Kids

Tim Adams is the founder of Free Play for Kids which started out as Free Footie in 2007, when he met a group of kids that broke his heart into a million pieces. Tim Adams was at an inner-city school filled with struggling kids, doing a story for his former job as a reporter with CBC Edmonton. After turning the mic off, he asked about volunteering. He had played a lot of soccer and thought he could give the sport back to some of the kids who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to play. That instance grew into what we know today as www.freeplayforkids.com The lives that kids lead in our diverse community can get dark. Not everyone has the coach that has changed their life or the mentor that leads by example or the opportunities that make things work out. Not everyone has a safe space at home or their basic needs covered or the skills that some of us take for granted like making breakfast or even being able to afford breakfast. Tim works very hard putting in the reps, to make amazing things happen for kids and young leaders. He recognizes the privilege he has and the experiences he’s had that other kids haven’t even been able to imagine before Free Play For Kids. He also knows first hand just how life changing having access to sport and coaches who make you feel seen can be on someone’s life. Not only has Tim provided an opportunity to play, he’s grown the program to provide opportunities for leadership, and created a safe space for kids to be their authentic selves. His team of coaches comes from diverse backgrounds and skills and identities. You can see it in how they lead, and how happy the kids are to be around them. They’ve found ways to transport the kids so that it’s no longer a barrier. They’ve formed partnerships with businesses to bring food to kids when gathering wasn’t an option. They’ve worked hard to be there for kids when kids need them most in these unprecedented times. There is no perfect journey to an undertaking as massive as Free Play, but Tim shares a piece of it all on this episode and how sometimes we have to leave a financially secure space where we don’t feel supported and take a risk on ourselves. Sometimes you have to simply bet on yourself. Just do it. Over the years, Tim has been recognized as a Top 40 Under 40 (2011) by Edify magazine, he was on of two civilians to receive the 2013 Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Crime Prevention Award, and he was most recently a Northern Lights recipient in 2020. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. To get to know more about him, he’s most active on Twitter. Episode 173 - Aaron Bold on Playing the Long Game, Legacy, Independence, and Resilience

Aaron Bold is a Canadian Professional Lacrosse goalie, a coach to many young athletes as well as a trainer and owner of Bold Athletics facility in Edmonton. Aaron has never done things the easy way whether it be in the pursuit of an athletic achievement, a business goal, or any aspect of life. He pays tribute to his mom who has always been someone he can count on. We discuss a lot of things about life in this episode but there is bound to be a takeaway for anyone who listens. As a podcast host, I think it's important to celebrate legacy and show compassion and empathy to what people face in their life. When you know pain, you see pain and you feel it and it almost connects you with the people you're meant to connect with.Life isn't meant to be easy all the time and the more open we are, the more we can see the helpers when we need them. I witnessed an immense amount of strength from Aaron this past year as not only did he have to be strong for his clients, he had to be strong as a gym owner, a partner, and a human being.Aaron lost the love of his life to a lengthy battle with cancer in 2020; at a time when there was so much happening in the world, I would never be able to imagine being in his shoes. Aaron talks about how he met Michelle and who she is for him. He talked about personal growth and his goals for the future. To celebrate the life of Michelle Fines, I would love for you to donate to either www.albertacancer.ca or donate at www.southlake.caIf you would like to learn more about Aaron, you can follow him on IG @boldy77 or go to his website www.boldathletics.comTo learn more about your host, Chris Liddle, you can go to @christianliddle, or follow the show @thelifestylechase or head to www.invigoratetraining.comTo support the show, please subscribe on your favourite platform and share on social media. Episode 168 - Alex Effer

Today's episode is with Toronto-based, Alex Effer (@alex.effer). I'm going to use his story from resilientrehab.ca to give you an idea of what he is all about. In addition, if you're interested in anything he has to offer - that is his website. "From a young age, I gained an understanding of the importance of health and physical activity from playing competitive sports and going to the gym. However, I didn’t gain a full appreciation of life-long health until I was diagnosed and hospitalized with colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease. My life changed drastically. I was in constant pain. Joint pain, especially my lower back, knees, and ankles, stomach pains and mental exhaustion from the fear that I wouldn’t be able to do the things that I enjoyed doing. With my background in Exercise Physiology from the University of Toronto as well as the positions I have held as an Exercise Physiologist, I started to educate myself on multiple fitness, rehabilitation and nutrition models which I applied on myself. Some worked, others didn’t, but I was driven to find a solution as I was not going to let pain interfere with my life. After years of trial and error, consulting with other practitioners, and the combination of multiple fitness and rehabilitation methodologies, I overcame the constant daily pains and am able to train and move pain-free.From my experience, I have dedicated my life to help my clients overcome any ailments or pain in order to restore confidence in their lives through a unique, integrated, and multi-disciplinary approach to training and rehabilitation."The Lifestyle Chase needs your help growing the audience. Since September 2018, I (Chris Liddle) have been having conversations with guests in and out of the fitness industry with the vision of helping people to be their best self and live a realistically fulfilling life as they strive to be their best self. Episode 167 - Kyle Dobbs on Getting Outside Of The Echo Chamber and Constantly Learning

This is Kyle Dobbs (@compoundperformance_) return to The Lifestyle Chase. He first appeared on the show back in June 2019 for Episode 51. This past year I enrolled in the quarterly mentorship offered by Kyle and Matt. As a sidenote, Matt Domney has also been on the show. Their business is https://www.compoundperformance.com/Kyle takes great pride in being a family man and is someone who thrives off of facilitating strong people in his circle. He's been someone that's aligned with me countless times in what I would deem to be my core values. He takes the well being and quality of life of his diverse and talented community that he's built over the years incredibly seriously. He wants to form strong connections and learn about people who might not walk the same path he walked. He has been an excellent role model for me which is a big part of why I promote him so much on the show and asked for him to come back. With all of that being said, I hope you give this episode a listen. If you're a trainer or coach, I highly recomend checking out the offerings of the Compound Performance Business. Episode 166 - Lucy Hendricks as Guest Host with Chris Liddle

Today Lucy Hendricks @lucy_hendricks took on the role as guest host of The Lifestyle Chase. She asked me if I was open to having her interview me which is a perfect segway into our episode. We talked about being open minded in the fitness industry and stepping back from the approach of being dogmatic about everything that we see. I shared some pieces of life experience which have played a role in shaping my personality and approach in life and we expanded more about how we can go into the industry with a beginner mindset and be open to feedback. Lucy has previously appeared on the show on Episode 104, as well as Episode 135 so it's definitely well worth your time to check those episodes to learn more about her and what she does. I am currently doing Mindful Movement sessions with her where she is challenging me to be better in my own training and wellness. If you're wondering what Mindful Movement is - think about it like insurance for your body, or valuable insight for your strength training. It's not quite yoga, it's not stretching, it's not meditation. If you're anything like me, just send her a message and ask her how you can try a class. The Lifestyle Chase has been around for a while now and I am putting a lot of effort into growing the audience. If you want to help with that, I'd love it if you shared this episode on social media and tagged me @christianliddle, @thelifestylechase and @lucy_hendricks . Episode 164 - Erik Turner

Erik Turner @erikturner41 and I have been hyping eachother up on Instagram via DMs and posts over the last year or two and it's been a very welcome addition to all of the unpredictableness that comes with life. When you find like minded people there is a good feeling that comes from cheering one another on as you each pursue big hairy audacious goals. Erik is a Professional Lacrosse Player in the NLL with the Colorado Mammoth which is currently on pause. He also works with a lot of young lacrosse players through his work directly with schools and various other offerings throughout the year. While he waits to get back to the NLL he is dialing into his own fitness and nutrition in big ways. His story will make you second guess if you are going after your goals or just saying that you're going after your goals. We talk about his time at Cornell, recovering from an injury, seeing the positives in having all your stuff burn, his experiences pursuing lacrosse and showing what he's capable of, and reflecting on how far he's come since his appearance on the 2nd Floor Podcast. It's important to realize there are going to be opportunities to grow and excel and they are going to come at you at first as obstacles. It's not that we need to be toxicly positive about everything that goes wrong in our life, but if we can find learning experiences in our setbacks, and be coachable in our shortcomings, we can excel and do what we came to do. Episode 163 - Andrew Hannon

Andrew (@ando_pfs) and I met through Instagram and through both participating in the Compound Performance Mentorship. Our introverted tendencies helped us connect. There are so many instances where we are on the same page with our values and work ethic that I was excited to have him on the show to take a deep dive on a few things. There are a lot of podcasts that Andrew has been on that go a lot further into fitness for golfers or simply talk more about exercise and training. We talked a bit more about life and values and people. Andrew started as an athlete in a small town in Kansas where he participated in three sports in high school. His sports career continued at Baker University where he played baseball and basketball. During that time Andrew began to find his true passion for fitness and performance. While majoring in Exercise Science his knowledge on fitness and health continued to grow. Throughout his athletic career at Baker, he realized his strength performance goals could be reached by getting into weight lifting. After he graduated he knew that he wanted to share the knowledge he learned to help other people, and that’s where his personal training career started. What Andrew loves about personal training is the fitness industry is always expanding and there is always something new to learn. The mindset and heart of an athlete, he continued to look for opportunities to continue his education with health and fitness. He embraced the learning and concepts of golf fitness and performance. He believes that the general public can benefit from the techniques and concepts of golf fitness training through mobility, flexibility, dynamic movement while throwing a twist with traditional strength and athletic movements. Andrew views health and fitness is not necessarily about looking ripped or toned year round with high intensity workouts, but about a life style change through active habits, maintainable nutritional choices, and a healthy mind set of self-worth.Andrew loves working with all types of people, and enjoys creating valuable interpersonal relationships that can help clients exceed their goals. He enjoys learning about his clients to ensure a fun, motivational and fulfilling workout. If you enjoy this episode, please share a screenshot in your Instagram story or tell a friend. Episode 159 - Kenny Bhullar Talks About The Fight For Farmers In India

For Episode 159, I wanted to bring an important topic to The Lifestyle Chase. I recruited my new friend, Kenny Bhullar, a fellow trainer/coach and one of the podcast hosts of Edmonton-based 2nd Floor Podcast to help. I was hearing about The Fight for Farmers in India, seeing Kenny's efforts to raise awareness and funds, and I know a lot of people impacted by it whether it is through their family, or through our globalized world. To be honest, it has an impact on all of us. Spices, market price, big business vs. small business, the list goes on. We are more globally connected than we may realize, and the events of one part of the world, as we've witnessed in 2020, do have a direct correlation to our part of the world, whether we like it or not. I've seen grocery store prices rise in a pandemic when wages haven't, there is a lot to talk about, always, and I think this is a piece of the puzzle that is necessary for all of us to listen to today.Truly, what is important to me with my platform as a host of a podcast and as a trainer and a coach, is that I have to walk my talk. When I say I care about people, or causes, I need to demonstrate that with action. I was watching as my friends were spreading awareness of something they cared about, the Fight for Farmers, and I knew to talk about it on my podcast would help, because it's a white male asking to learn about something happening in India and this is what inspired me to reach out to Kenny to see if he could help. I knew he'd be up to the challenge. Go check out 2nd Floor Podcast, and if you aren't already, follow @kenny_bhullar. He's a driven guy with a bright future ahead of him. Donna Murray of @thecoasthr , http://www.thecoasthr.com/ and I go back to 2010. When I graduated high school, I wasn't 100% sure of what I wanted to do. I had initially planned to move to Vancouver for Film School but the expense and the move was intimidating so I wanted more time to figure things out. I went and applied for jobs in my nearby town. One of them was Sport Check. When I went for the interview, Donna was the recruiter helping with hiring for a brand new store. Since then, I moved to Edmonton to take General Studies at Grant Macewan University and transferred to a downtown store to work at the same time. My career evolved, I left retail to go into the warehouse, and I hadn't decided what I wanted to commit to yet with University. I just had broad collection of courses under my belt. I accumulated a 5 year career in the stainless steel industry which led to a point in my life where I made the "all-in" leap into the fitness industry and here we are at the end of in 2020 and Donna Murray and I have stayed connected this whole time. Episode 150 - The Return of Dr. Farha and Naheed Shariff

I interview these two as a team, because they work together really well as a team. They are truly role models that I look up to in many ways.I asked them to give introductions of themselves on the show for anyone outside of Edmonton who may not know who they are. For anyone who knows ME really well, I consider them family - just like my blood family who I am extremely close with. So if you like me, you'll love them.We talk about this past year, how dogs can change your life, and the importance of understanding the world and everyone who shares it on a deeper more meaningful level. When you learn how to support those around you who've lived different experiences than you, it changes your life forever. You learn that every decision you make matters. Every pivot of a person with privilege of any description, will impact someone else's life. Finding ways to be conscious of this reality enables us to find greater strength together.Regardless of business or professional goals, it is deeply impactful to understand where you direct your energy and how you can move forward in times of uncertainty. It is important to reflect, and plan, and sometimes find places of catharsis. Most often these times of clarity come from times of discomfort or pain. It's important to be able to see that you are not defined by being in fitness or being a business owner. You are defined by what it is in your life that inspires you to do what you do.Why are you on this planet and what kind of legacy do you want to have? For the Shariffs, it is the ability to lead by example in daily decisions and raise their family to have an immense amount of self belief in whatever direction their heart takes them.If you are able to believe in your 10 year plan, or your 5 year plan, that is what will get you there. That level of self belief requires support, and a sustainable two-way energy exchange which comes with the endless experiences that make us who we are. Thanks for listening to The Lifestyle Chase. Episode 148 - Ivana Radojevic

Ivana Radojevic (@iv.ra on Instagram) was born in Croatia. She spent her early childhood in Germany and moved to Edmonton at a young age. She's now fluent in three languages. Her career journey started off as a Political Scientist. She did her undergrad in Political Science and German Language and Literature, worked a few years for the government, and decided the bureaucratic life wasn't for her. That's when she decided it was time to pivot. She went back to school and completed a Public Relations (PR) diploma. With a lot of hustle and hard work, she landed a job at an eCommerce sales and marketing agency where she continues to work today.I brought her on the podcast because there is a lot of cross over between what she's done so far and what many of us simply need to do in life. It's very relevant for a business owner or a fitness professional.Ivana shared information about email lists, ecommerce, course creation, pivoting your business to the online space, marketing to the right audience, networking on Linked In, hustling your dream job, Work/Life balance, risk assessment, and more. Episode 145 - Matt Domney

Matt Domney @mattdomney is the training director as part of Compound Performance. He's dialed into progressing towards his goals. He's a big strong dude, who responds to King Potato, but he in no way actually resembles a potato. The thing with Matt Domney, is he went from martial arts into powerlifting where the story is often the complete reverse. In this episode, we tried to talk about things Matt doesn't always talk about. Dean Guedo's boat got a shout out, and we talked about how trainers don't really live a balanced life but the awareness of that helps us plan how to achieve one for our future self. If you aren't aware of what you life might end up at age 40, you won't put in the work to set yourself up differently at age 30.We highlighted the Compound Performance Group Mentorship which I have just completed, and as I've mentioned in several other episodes of The Lifestyle Chase, I highly recommend it. Episode 141 - Beverley Simpson

Beverley @bsimpsonfitness is someone who has already helped me out in my career. Her core focus right now is in helping trainers realize their value in a constantly evolving industry. When gyms closed, there were a lot of stressed out trainers. Much the same as to how stressed out one would be when wondering if their credit card had enough to cover a tank of gas. We talked about that in this episode, struggles, origin story, personal growth, finding your way, how coaches need coaches, the journey to motherhood, body image struggles, self consciousness and the list goes on. So you should definitely listen. Thanks for supporting the Lifestyle Chase. This is the first episode of the 3rd season. That means we are entering the 3rd year of this podcast. Episode 140 - Chris Liddle on Where Are We Now? Hosted by Semaj Hunter

Huge thanks goes out to Semaj Hunter for hosting this episode for me. You can find him on Instagram @whereyoufit_ . You can learn about him more by going back in the episodes where I interviewed him. I recruited Semaj to be my guest host because it's been a while since I've been on the other side of the microphone and it's something that forces me to reflect on the time that's passed. If you're new here, you can find me (Chris) at @christianliddle on IG.Semaj asked me some tough questions that weren't easy to answer. We talked about how consumed I am with my career and how it's sometimes really tough for me to pick out what I do that isn't fitness. We talked about having to make change that is hard, specifically when it comes to things that we are doing to ourselves that hold us back. This episodes has plenty of tangents and long-winded answers but focuses a lot on the importance in believe in yourself as much as the people who look up to you believe in you. We highlighted how valuable the Compound Performance mentorship has been to me this year and some of the major takeaways. Episode 136 - Jason Gregor

Everyone who knew who Jason Gregor was, was excited to hear he'd be on The Lifestyle Chase. If that doesn't introduce him properly to new people I don't know what will. At his core he cares deeply. He's a very empathetic thoughtful person who has chosen a career he was passionate about because of how it feels to connect with something that means something. He's a past Top 40 Under 40 Nominee, he gives back to the community thoughtfully and generously both through how he uses his platform but also in how he leads his life. We were able to talk about his career journey, and his general attitude towards life. He's not one to really let an obstacle get in his way. Episode 135 - Harold Kaufman-Gibbons and Lucy Hendricks

This episode features Harold Kaufman-Gibbons and Lucy Hendricks. We talked about some of Lucy's life experiences and how they shaped how she shows up in the world. We talked about the value of Lucy's Mindful Movement. Episode 129 - Calvin Martin

Calvin Martin (@calvinjmartin) is half of @stepbrothersnyc which is a collaboration between him and @thelifestylechase alumni, @bryanbaia . I think this is the most I've ever laughed in recording an episode of The Lifestyle Chase. We talked about Calvin's start into the industry and he opened up about some really tough moments in his life. We can expect to face difficulty but it's what we do afterward that makes up the biggest moments in our life. Calvin talked about his passion for working with youth, the future of tomorrow, and where that stemmed from. We talked about how important it is to be yourself, and be genuine with social media solidarity. We have to be ready to stand up for and with our brothers and sisters for the next 20 000 days or so, so how does that look for you?It goes without saying that we talked about things here and now, #blacklivesmatter, #COVID19, and all of the things that have made 2020 what it is. However, if you find this podcast in 2020, I think it will leave you with plenty of takeaways. Did you plan that hike in your week, or did it take a pandemic for the hike to happen. Are we telling our people that we love them and really soaking in the time that we get with them, or are we waiting for a pandemic to happen. This episode is a must-listen, and I know that seems kind of biased because it's me (Chris Liddle) typing it out and of course I want you to listen, but I think you should go listen regardless. Episode 127 - Isatu Fofanah

Imagine you're a little kid, and you're born amidst a civil war in Sierra Leone. All you want to do, is be a kid, go to school, have fun, get good grades and live your life. Sometimes life just doesn't work that way. That's what we're here to hear about. It's that simple desire to live a happy life that eventually brought Isatu Fofanah to Canada. Isatu is a laser focused individual who has enjoyed being athletic from a young age. It seems after all these years she's still not much of a fan of our climate or our snow. But despite everything that might seem like a major obstacle to someone like me, she rose to become a track star with a scholarship in the states and represented Canada on the global stage in track until she eventually had to retire due to injuries. Episode 126 - Kehinde Anjorin on a Grandmother‘s Resiliency and Showing up Big

As the host of The Lifestyle Chase, I've been able to learn so much by meeting new people. I met Kehinde via Lucy Hendricks. Quite often I just go on this spider web of person to person and it reminds me that the world is truly not as big as we think it is. There are so many ways that we can connect with each other and support each other. We can be that warm hug or that safety net. Kehinde shared with me how much her grandma taught her about resiliency, and about keeping a positive in tough times, and from what I learned about her, the legacy of her Grandma is very present in how she shows up to the world. 2020 has been one of those years that has knocked people on their ass in so many different ways. It's challenged us to take a look at what we're doing and how we can do better. It's challenged us not to apply what we learned in a fancy certification to our client, but to apply what works best for that client. I really enjoyed this episode, you should listen. Episode 125 - Anthony Zorzetto

Today I interviewed @mr.zorzetto . This episode is also available in video on YouTube. Unlike past guests, he is not in the fitness industry, he's not a professional athlete, but he appreciates how fitness changes his life for better and surrounds him with people who hold space. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀If you've listened to Anthony on a podcast before, this is a completely new conversation. Anthony used to do coke, he struggled with addiction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We leaned into a lot of topics. I've never interviewed anyone in the way I interviewed Anthony today. It was uncharted territory. I was extremely honest and at times very scatterbrained. I am shook up over the world's events. I think I gave @2ndfloorpodcast a shout out at least twice because I genuinely enjoyed their episode with Anthony's struggle with addiction. I said why I enjoy following @kenny_bhullar and seeing him carry out his passions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We talked about listening. We talked about how I learned more about Ramadan this year and I loved it. We talked about admitting we are horrible at things or that we struggle. We talked about diversity, why we need it, and seeing something in someone because you've been through it or you've got a connection with it. Making those connections. Seeking those connections. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We talked how people LOVE to like happy posts where you're winning and they avoid and get uncomfortable with posts that make them sad inside or cringe. We talked about the connection we were having as two people talking on a friday morning and how we need to put ourselves out there to get that in life. Thanks for listening!
