On October 2, 2024, we close out the Eclipse Season with an annular solar eclipse at 10°03 Libra. When combined with the specific symbolism of the annular eclipse, Libra’s cardinal air energy, and the guiding ruling planets Venus and Saturn, this eclipse offers a profound invitation for recalibration and rebalancing, especially in relationships, justice, and harmony.What is an Annular Solar Eclipse?An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the Moon is too far from Earth to completely cover the Sun. This leaves a "ring of fire," where the Sun’s edges remain visible, creating a stunning and symbolic visual. Unlike a total eclipse that plunges us into darkness, an annular eclipse suggests something incomplete, a partial unveiling of new energies. The light is dimmed but not extinguished, hinting at revelations that may come gradually, or situations where clarity is still developing.For the cardinal signs, known for their initiating and leadership qualities, an annular eclipse can indicate beginnings that emerge slowly or come with conditions—there’s a push to start something new, but with an awareness that it may take time to fully manifest. Libra is an air sign ruled by Venus and exalted by Saturn. This eclipse will reflect Venusian themes of love, balance, justice, and beauty, tempered by Saturn's demand for structure, maturity, and long-term commitment.Venus and Saturn: The Planetary Guardians of the Eclipse* Venus, ruler of Libra, governs relationships, harmony, values, and our sense of aesthetics. Venus is not visible to the Moon or Sun during the eclipse, meaning her presence may be felt more internally—there could be a pull towards transforming our relationships at a deeper, soul-level, or there may be some disconnect or blind spot in understanding the themes, events or their meaning for you.* Saturn, exalted in Libra, represents structure, responsibility, and commitment. Saturn's energy reminds us that true harmony cannot be achieved without dedication and discipline. As this eclipse happens with Saturn in Pisces (also averse), we are urged to reconcile our need for boundaries (Saturn) with the boundlessness of compassion and emotional fluidity of Pisces. The aversion may signify an awkward or uneasy adjustment period, where integration takes work, or as with Venus a disconnect or blind spot in understanding or applying Saturn’s themes.Together, Venus and Saturn suggest a need to reassess our relationships and commitments. Are they truly aligned with our values? Are they balanced? Have we placed proper boundaries or taken on responsibilities that need renegotiation? Each phase unfolds a new chapter in the story, with significant moments of action, culmination, and closure over the next two years. So, as we close out the 2 year cycle of Libra Eclipses before the Nodes move on to Virgo and Pisces, we are simultaneously beginning a new long-term story for those whose charts are impacted in this area. Aspects to the Eclipse* Conjunct Mercury and the South Node: Mercury's presence alongside the South Node suggests communication around past issues, particularly related to relationships, justice, and equality. This could be a time to reflect on how past conversations or unresolved agreements need to be rebalanced, renegotiated, released or otherwise might be reduced in their painful impact.* Whole-Sign Opposition to Chiron: Chiron, the wounded healer, sits in Aries, opposite this eclipse. On September 18, 2024, or possibly the 17th depending on your timezone, a partial lunar eclipse will take place at 25°40’ Pisces. It occurs at 3.34 am in the UK where I am based, 2.34 am UT. This eclipse is an introduction to a cycle that will continue through 2025 and 2026, with similar eclipses in Pisces and Virgo marking the end of summer each year. This is the first of three lunar eclipses in Pisces, initiating a period which offers us deep spiritual reflection, surrender, and transformation. The Pisces-Virgo axis invites us to explore themes of service, spirituality, and the balance between the material and the ethereal. We are likely to explore questions and themes such as How does being of service to others also reward and feed our soul? Are we so spiritual that we are detached from the material world, and if so, how can we ground ourselves in practical, earthly matters? How do our dreams impact on our waking life?This eclipse occurs with the Sun applying to meet the fixed star Alkaid. Alkaid has long been associated with themes of mourning, protection, and cyclic change. It adds a layer of sombre reflection to this lunar eclipse, suggesting that this is a time to honour what has passed, embrace transitions, and prepare for new beginnings with a spirit of surrender.What is a Lunar Eclipse?A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow over the Moon. Unlike a normal Full Moon, where the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs, a lunar eclipse adds the weight of the Earth’s shadow, symbolising supercharged moments of culmination, closure, and revelation.Lunar eclipses highlight the need to release old patterns and beliefs, illuminating what must be let go in order to move forward. They may correspond with emotional and spiritual breakthroughs, bringing unresolved issues to light. A Full Moon alone is a time of heightened awareness, but during a lunar eclipse, this effect is amplified and is more likely to have a lasting impact on our lives, especially if it aspects planets in our birth chart. Eclipses may accelerate events, causing major endings, major beginnings, or shifts that may have been building beneath the surface for some time.The Significance of a Pisces Lunar EclipseThis partial lunar eclipse takes place in Pisces, a mutable, femine or yin, water sign associated with intuition, compassion, and the dissolution of boundaries. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter and has Venus as the Exaltation Ruler. Jupiter is the planet of hope, faith and wisdom as well as growth. As the Moon is eclipsed in Pisces, its connection with our Earth is temporarily interrupted. Like a computer being switched off and on again, there is a sense of a reset. Themes of surrender, introspection, and connection to the spiritual realm may be intensified. Pisces energy is often flowing and ethereal, visualise the ocean, sometimes still and sometimes with dramatic high waves crashing, making it more challenging to engage with the material world. This eclipse may stir deep emotional waters, encouraging us to trust in the unseen and offering the opportunity to (re)connect with our higher selves.The Sun, meanwhile, is in Virgo at 27 degrees, a sign of practicality, discernment, and service. This Pisces-Virgo axis emphasises the tension between the spiritual and the material, the mystical and the mundane. Virgo seeks order and efficiency, while Pisces is more concerned with the flow of life and the unseen forces that guide us. During this eclipse, we may find ourselves needing to balance these two energies, learning to integrate the practical aspects of life with a sense of higher purpose.The Eclipse Cycle and Moon Family: Past and FutureThis partial lunar eclipse is part of a Saros cycle, a repeating pattern of eclipses that recur approximately every 18 years. The Saros cycle organizes eclipses into families or series that span over a thousand years. Each series begins with penumbral eclipses, then transitions through partial and total eclipses, before eventually ending with another set of penumbral eclipses. This particular eclipse is number 52 of 73 in its series 118, set to end in 2962.This Saros cycle brings a thematic recurrence of events and energies. For this eclipse, we can look back 18 years to see what was occurring in our lives in relation to the Pisces-Virgo axis, as similar themes may re-emerge. On September 3rd, 2024, at 2:55 AM BST (1:55 AM UT), the New Moon will occur at 11°04' in the sign of Virgo. This lunation brings with it opportunities for new beginnings, fresh starts, and a chance to set intentions with precision and care.The Meaning of New MoonsIn astrology, New Moons signify the beginning of a new lunar cycle. The Moon and the Sun meet in the same sign during this phase, symbolising a merging of conscious and unconscious energies. At this time, there is no light from the Moon, making it unable to reflect the Sun's rays. This darkness represents a blank slate, a moment when we can plant seeds of intention, deep in the darkness, the safety of the symbolic womb of the dark earth, that with tending, we plan and hope to grow and develop over the coming weeks and months.New Moons are traditionally seen as times to initiate projects, start new habits, or set goals. I believe it is a time to stop, pause, review and reflect in the darkness of the sky to plan the seeds you wish to plant. I prefer to wait until we see the first slivers of light of the waxing moon, to carry my intentions and plans forward.The themes and energies associated with the sign in which the New Moon occurs for you in your individual natal chart will colour these new beginnings, providing a framework for our intentions. The New Moon in Virgo: Mutable Earth EnergyThis New Moon occurs in Virgo, a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, intellect, and adaptability. Virgo’s energy is grounded, practical, and detail-oriented, focusing on efficiency, precision, and the pursuit of excellence. However, Virgo also carries an underlying tension, as it often strives for an unattainable perfection. This paradox of seeking perfection in an imperfect world can create a constant drive to improve, refine, and correct. Virgo arrives at the transitional season of weather, just before the weather and the quality of light changes when the Sun moves into Cardinal Libra. Virgo is the time of harvest, there are decisions to be made, and assessments of quality. Although we are no longer a predominately agricultural society, it is still wise to use this time to reflect on the light half of the year we have travelled through before we face the shorter, darker days of the second half of the astrological year. The metaphorical harvest that we preserve now, the seeds we save from it to replant, will need to serve and see us through another winter season and support the new growth next spring. The mutable quality of Virgo adds an element of flexibility and adaptability, allowing us to adjust our plans and intentions as we move forward. This energy encourages us to be meticulous in our efforts, paying attention to the finer details with the potential to remain open to change and growth.Virgo and Mercury: The Power of the MindMercury, the ruler of Virgo, is known for its versatility and ability to traverse different realms—both physical, intellectual and esoterical. In mythology, Mercury (or Hermes) was a messenger who could travel between the world of the gods, the mortal realm and the Underworld, embodying the power of communication and movement between different states of being. He was known as the Messenger God for this reason. Mercury is the planet that travels closest to the Earth (after our Moon which orbits the Earth rather than the Sun). Mercury also retrogrades most frequently, but usually only for 21 days, the shortest retrograde period. This means He meets more regularly with the Sun in Cazimi, a powerful moment of death and rebirth. As the ruler of this New Moon, Mercury sets the agenda. Mercury is currently in Leo, where there is no line of sight to Virgo, it is now direct having finished retrograding, emerging from its shadow period and gaining in strength. This suggests that while the New Moon in Virgo may highlight areas where we need to refine our thinking or communication, the momentum for progress is steadily building as the Moon waxes fuller.The Cycles of the Moon: Monthly, Six-Month, and the Moon FamilyAstrologically, the Moon’s cycles can be tracked in several ways. The most immediate is the monthly lunar cycle, which spans approximately 28 days from New Moon to New Moon. However, there is also a six-month cycle between a New Moon and the subsequent Full Moon in the same sign, when the seeds planted during the New Moon come to a fuller fruition.Beyond these, there is a more extended cycle known as the Moon Family, as illustrated by astrologer Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III. The Full Moon in Aquarius: August 19th, 2024, at 27 DegreesThe Full Moon on August 19th, 2024, will illuminate the night sky at 27 degrees Aquarius. It offers us a potent moment of culmination, revelation, and deep introspection. The Aquarius Full Moon invites us to explore the tension between the familiar and our comfort zone and the unknown possibilities and potential, between stability and our desire for liberation.Understanding Full Moons: A Time of Culmination, Illumination, and RevelationA Full Moon occurs when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun, occupying signs of the same modality, for this Moon fixed or solid signs, Aquarius and Leo. During this time, the light from the Sun fully illuminates the Moon, allowing it to shine at its brightest and symbolically cast its light on the areas of our lives that may need attention, action or awareness. In astrology, Full Moons represent a time of culmination—where the intentions, actions, and energies that were set in motion during the New Moon come to fruition.This phase can be associated with revelations or new understandings, as the opposition between the Sun and Moon brings to light truths that were previously hidden. Emotions may run high, the time can be challenging, with disrupted sleep and unsettled pets. The clarity gained during this time can lead to important decisions, breakthroughs, and endings as we move into the waxing stage that follows. It’s a time when the astrology can reveal what has been brewing beneath the surface, allowing us to see a fuller picture if the Moon aspects planets in your chart. Aquarius and Leo: Fixed Signs, Air and Fire Elements in OppositionThis Full Moon in Aquarius, is a fixed air sign known for its association with innovation, independence and concerns for the collective. This approximately 27/28-month cycle involves a series of related lunations at or around the same degree, including a New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon, and Last Quarter Moon. Each phase builds upon the last, creating a narrative that unfolds over a little more than two years. The Full Moon at 27 degrees Aquarius is part of this larger story, marking a significant point in the unfolding journey that started with a New Moon on 20 February 2023 at 01 degrees of Pisces. If the degrees between 01 Pisces to 27 Aquarius activate planets in your chart, then you may wish to track this Moon Family cycle and look back at what was seeded for you in 2023. There may have been a correction or a turning point in the story around the time of the First Quarter Moon on 20 November 2023. The New Moon in Leo on August 4: On August 4th, the New Moon will occur at 12 degrees in Leo, at 12.13 pm BST and 1.13 UT. marking a symbolic ending and new beginning in the lunar cycle and a corresponding opportunity for fresh starts and new beginnings for us. The Nature of New MoonsA new moon occurs when the moon and sun align in the same sign, initiating a new lunar cycle. This symbolises the birth of a new phase, the moon will not be visible from Earth due to its position, and in every planet’s cycle, this meeting with the Sun signifies a purification, rebirth and reset. The darkness of the new moon phase represents a blank slate, a time to set intentions, initiate new projects or goals, and embark on new journeys. We hope that they will grow as the Moon waxes fuller.Lunar Cycles: Monthly, Biannual, and BeyondThe lunar cycle spans approximately 28 days, moving through various identifiable phases from the New Moon, waxing to Full Moon and then waning back. However, the New Moon's influence extends beyond this monthly cycle. There is a six-month cycle between a New Moon and the corresponding Full Moon in the same sign, in this case Leo, which will be on 12 February 2025 which completes an arc of growth and culmination.Astrologer Dietrich Pessin's concept of the Moon Family in "Lunar Shadows III" illustrates an even longer, approximately 28-month cycle. This cycle for this Leo New Moon includes the New Moon on 4 August 2024 at 12 degrees, first quarter Moon on 4 May 2025 at 14 degrees of Leo, Full Moon on 1 February 2026 at 13 degrees, and last quarter Moon on 1 November 2026 at 9 degrees of Leo. These phases, all occur near the same degree. This extended cycle allows for a deeper progression and unfolding of the themes initiated at the new moon. Navigating the Midjourney Point of a Three-Moon StoryThe New Moon represents a time of new beginnings, introspection, and planting seeds for the future. Every month we get the opportunity of a fresh slate. If you are familiar with your personal Astrology Birth Chart, you can look at what House the New Moon occurs in for you individually. This will be the house with Cancer on the Cusp and it will give you an idea of what area of your life and the themes the focus is likely to be. This is especially helpful with New Moons as the nature of a New Moon is that we cannot fully ‘see’ yet. We are asked to trust and proceed anyway, albeit patiently and cautiously.The New Moon in Cancer will be at 14 degrees on July 5th and is a significant mid-journey point within the story of Three Moons. I feel that is is framed by the Full Moons in Capricorn, the first at 1 degree in June and the second at 29 degrees on July 21st. This sequence, that spans all of Capricorn and touches the mid point of Cancer offers a narrative of growth, culmination, healing and renewal, linked to the themes of safety, security and nurturing together with how we balance those needs when we venture out in the World. What lasting structures we desire to create, a legacy we may wish to leave, our aspirations and the rest we need to create that vision in a healthy way. Understanding New MoonsNew Moons occur when the Moon meets the Sun in its cycle, blending their energies and initiating a new cycle for the Moon. The Moon is unable to reflect the Sun’s light at this time and this is why it is seen as a moment of rebirth, the old skin has been discarded in the preceeding dark moon phase, and a new, tender skin begins to form. This phase is ideal for setting new intentions, planning new projects, and reflecting on personal goals. This is particularly effective when they relate to the themes of the Sign the New Moon occurs in. We may view this as different cycles unfolding within larger cycles. A shorter 29.5-day cycle, as the Moon completes her journey around the zodiac, or look to the longer cycle of 6 Months. What was illuminated for you at the last Full Moon in Cancer on 27 December 2023 at 4 degrees, and what have you needed to release since then? Also, looking forward to what you will grow in the 6 months ahead until the Full Moon in Cancer on 13 January 2025 at 23 degrees of Cancer. There is also another, even longer story that plays out just after the degree that the New Moon occurs in. This is called the Moon Family as outlined by Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III. If you begin a major Longer term new project around this time, you may expect louder turning points as it progresses around the dates of 5 April 2025, first Quarter Moon, 3 January 2026 Full Moon and 3 October 2026 Last Quarter Moon. This would usually experienced by people if this current lunation is in a close aspect to a planet in their natal chart making it personal to them.The New Moon in Cancer at 14 DegreesThis New Moon in Cancer is particularly exciting to me as it is exactly conjunct fixed star Sirius (at 14.21 degrees Cancer). Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, has been revered by many ancient civilisations for its spiritual power and significance. Known as the Dog Star, it is part of the constellation Canis Major. If you wish to connect with this star at this time, maybe in a New Moon ritual, the gemstone that represents it is Beryl and the plant is Juniper or Mugwort. Sirius: The Brightest StarSirius holds great spiritual power and offers the potential for fame and success, though it can also bring turbulence and challenges. This star is linked to magic and intense creative power, suggesting that great risks can lead to great rewards. The influence of Sirius invites us to tap into a deep and hard-earned understanding of the universe, embracing the journey towards enlightenment and profound insight.Berndadette Brady (in Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars) says that in mythology, Canis Major is one of the hunting dogs of Orion, guarding the gates of another world. The heliacal rising of Sirius, sometimes popularly known as the Lion's Gate, occurs around August 13th and is historically associated with the rising of the Nile in ancient Egypt. This event symbolises the transition from the mundane to the sacred, emphasising the potential for immense success and the caution that such success may come with significant challenges. Historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Diana Spencer, both born with Sirius prominent in their charts, exemplify how this star can bestow a form of immortality through their enduring legacies. Abraham Lincoln was born on the day that Sirius culminated as his Venus set. It is interesting, at least to me and I hope to you too, that as I was taking a break from this writing, I saw this post shared on Social Media by fellow Astrologer Empress Atlantis, it was originally from Pop Crave. Here we are asked to review and assess if our cosy nest has all we need to meet our lofty aspirations. How well are we using our resources, before we can settle, rest and enjoy the comforts of Cancer Season, we must face these questions.The Full Moon is a significant phase in the lunar cycle, often associated with heightened emotions, revelations, and moments of clarity. This month, we are looking at Capricorn and Cancer, our needs for security and nurturing and how this competes with, or supports, our drive to achieve in the world and build something we can be recognised for. It is also significant that in July we will have the New Moon in Cancer, followed by the second Full Moon in Capricorn, so it is important to pay attention to these Capricorn themes this year as the Moon is revisiting them. Also in July, as a look ahead, the Full Moon will occur at the degree that Pluto will be retrograding back over when it returns to Capricorn in September. Sometimes, the Universe has a way of saying, Look Here with a big red arrow to draw our attention. I feel this is one of those times. Each Full Moon is part of a larger cycle that includes the New Moon, First Quarter, and Last Quarter phases, creating a rhythm that influences our lives on multiple levels.A Full Moon also ties into longer cycles, marking significant points in both one-month and six-month periods. The themes that emerge during a Full Moon can often be tied back to the New Moon in the same sign six months earlier, and the themes can be revisited or resolved over the subsequent months. If something significant has happened for you on a New or Full Moon, it is worth tracking the rest of this Moon cycle, I have found it very insightful. Full Moon in CapricornCapricorn is an earth sign ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Time. Things may not move fast here, but they are considered, they have intention and purpose. Capricorn emphasises discipline, responsibility, and the building of solid foundations. With Mars, the planet of Action exalted in Capricorn, there is a force of energy available for focused action and determined progress. Together they represent structures, focused hard work, and the drive to overcome obstacles. This is why we associate the sign with the Mountain Goat after all, there is no obstacle that can stop that Goat from climbing to the pinnacle and achieving their goal.Capricorn is an Earth sign, pragmatic and practical. It is Yin or feminine and it is Cardinal or Tropical, meaning that it will initiate action through strong initiative. The Full Moon in Scorpio, 24 April 2024 marks the closure of the eclipse season in Libra and Aries. A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and the Moon are in opposite signs, in this case Scorpio and Taurus. Symbolically, it represents the culmination of energies, illumination, and heightened emotions. It's a time of fruition, revelation, and letting go of what we have outgrown. Scorpio is ruled by Mars the Warrior Planet. It is the Yin, or Feminine and Water expression of the action oriented planet. Here, we can be plunged into the depths of our subconscious, confronting our deepest desires, fears, and transformations. Mars, the fiery warrior, is currently transiting the dreamy depths of oceanic Pisces. Moving closer to an engagement with Neptune, the planet of illusion and spirituality. This conjunction, on 29 April, may ignite our passions and blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, urging us to channel our energies into creative endeavours or spiritual pursuits. The Sun, symbolic archetype of our conscious self and life purpose, is joined by Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus. Jupiter expands our horizons, bringing blessings and opportunities, creating order and offering wisdom. However, Uranus is known as a disruptor or awakener with unexpected twists and turns. A Solar Eclipse will happen at the same time as a New Moon and this one is in Aries, representing the start of the astrological new year. Aries is the Cardinal, Yang or Masculine, outgoing and action oriented Temple of fiery, courageous warrior planet Mars. We find Mars currently swimming in the watery, expansive depths deep in the feels of Pisces. Aries is the sign of the exaltation of the sun and the Sun will also be exactly at the degree of its exaltation. This draws attention from astrologers and doubles down on the delineation that this Eclipse has something meaningful, of a Solar and Mars nature to bring into the world. It is in the decan of the sun, Aries II. In both traditions of astrology, the Sun rules this decan and this also draws our attention. Austin Coppock gives the image of the crown and in theWild Way Oracle Deck we see the bear wearing the crown. T Susan Chang titles this Decan 'The Kingdom of Gold'. The Wild Way Oracle deck by Nicola Allan titles this Decan 'Take the Lead' and depicts the Aries Bear wearing his Crown ruling his forest from his rocky throne. The Total Solar Eclipse will be visible in 15 states of America and the partial eclipse will be visible in all states. It will be 2044 before America sees another total eclipse. When layered on the 2023 eclipse path, the two form the shape of a cross. It is from Saros series 139, an 18 year cycle where the eclipses fall in the same place, but gradually move forward by 10 degrees or so. This is eclipse no 30 of 71 in the series. You may remember previous eclipses which fell in this part of your birth chart. If you experienced major shifts in 1970, 1988 or 2006 then it is more likely you may experience similar themes with a different flavour or seasoning this year. This Eclipse is conjunct the wounded healer Chiron and also co present with retrograde mercury and direct Venus. There is no sight of ruler Mars who has yet to gain dignity by bound or decan which will come later in April (16th). With the Rulers of this Eclipse, Venus and Saturn together in Pisces I take a deeper look to unpack what this Eclipse may mean for us. Its shadow will be visible across much of Europe, North/East Asia, much of Australia, much of Africa, North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Antarctica. The last eclipses in this cycle were March 2006, March 1988 and February 1970. We’ve been having eclipses in the Taurus/Scorpio axis for 2 half years and last year that began to shift. We had the first libra solar eclipse on 14 October beginning this story, and an Aries Solar Eclipse on 20 April 23. This is a continuation and development of that story. We may expect to find complications in relationships being brought to our attention. Reviewing who and what we are bound to, through love, devotion, compassion or karmic soul contracts. We may feel a drive to breakthrough and move forward onto our path with a need to weigh the Libran scales.
