The New Moon in Leo on August 4: On August 4th, the New Moon will occur at 12 degrees in Leo, at 12.13 pm BST and 1.13 UT. marking a symbolic ending and new beginning in the lunar cycle and a corresponding opportunity for fresh starts and new beginnings for us. The Nature of New MoonsA new moon occurs when the moon and sun align in the same sign, initiating a new lunar cycle. This symbolises the birth of a new phase, the moon will not be visible from Earth due to its position, and in every planet’s cycle, this meeting with the Sun signifies a purification, rebirth and reset. The darkness of the new moon phase represents a blank slate, a time to set intentions, initiate new projects or goals, and embark on new journeys. We hope that they will grow as the Moon waxes fuller.Lunar Cycles: Monthly, Biannual, and BeyondThe lunar cycle spans approximately 28 days, moving through various identifiable phases from the New Moon, waxing to Full Moon and then waning back. However, the New Moon's influence extends beyond this monthly cycle. There is a six-month cycle between a New Moon and the corresponding Full Moon in the same sign, in this case Leo, which will be on 12 February 2025 which completes an arc of growth and culmination.Astrologer Dietrich Pessin's concept of the Moon Family in "Lunar Shadows III" illustrates an even longer, approximately 28-month cycle. This cycle for this Leo New Moon includes the New Moon on 4 August 2024 at 12 degrees, first quarter Moon on 4 May 2025 at 14 degrees of Leo, Full Moon on 1 February 2026 at 13 degrees, and last quarter Moon on 1 November 2026 at 9 degrees of Leo. These phases, all occur near the same degree. This extended cycle allows for a deeper progression and unfolding of the themes initiated at the new moon. If this New Moon aspects planets in your chart, it is worth tracking these dates or if you notice significant new beginnings within the next two weeks..The New Moon in Leo: Significance and SymbolismLeo, ruled by the Sun, who is in its home domicile as it meets with our other Luminary and Light the Moon, is associated with leadership, self-expression, courage, and authenticity. The applause eventually dies down, the wheel of fortune turns, and enjoy your moment.”In her book Dreaming The Decans, T Susan Chang writes about Leo II“…Let the Wheel of Fortune spin. At its zenith, I shall win.Fortune’s favourite, call me bold Spinning legends into gold….”Tarot Correspondence: The Six of WandsIn the Tarot, the second decan of Leo corresponds to the Six of Wands, also known as the "Lord of Victory." This card depicts triumph, public recognition, and success after struggle. It reinforces the notion that this new moon heralds a time of achievement, good fortune and luck. Leo: Solar FiguresLeo is a fire sign, characterised by its fixed, stable nature and yang, or masculine outward-directed energy. Navigating the Midjourney Point of a Three-Moon StoryThe New Moon represents a time of new beginnings, introspection, and planting seeds for the future. Every month we get the opportunity of a fresh slate. If you are familiar with your personal Astrology Birth Chart, you can look at what House the New Moon occurs in for you individually. This will be the house with Cancer on the Cusp and it will give you an idea of what area of your life and the themes the focus is likely to be. This is especially helpful with New Moons as the nature of a New Moon is that we cannot fully ‘see’ yet. We are asked to trust and proceed anyway, albeit patiently and cautiously.The New Moon in Cancer will be at 14 degrees on July 5th and is a significant mid-journey point within the story of Three Moons. I feel that is is framed by the Full Moons in Capricorn, the first at 1 degree in June and the second at 29 degrees on July 21st. This sequence, that spans all of Capricorn and touches the mid point of Cancer offers a narrative of growth, culmination, healing and renewal, linked to the themes of safety, security and nurturing together with how we balance those needs when we venture out in the World. What lasting structures we desire to create, a legacy we may wish to leave, our aspirations and the rest we need to create that vision in a healthy way. Understanding New MoonsNew Moons occur when the Moon meets the Sun in its cycle, blending their energies and initiating a new cycle for the Moon. The Moon is unable to reflect the Sun’s light at this time and this is why it is seen as a moment of rebirth, the old skin has been discarded in the preceeding dark moon phase, and a new, tender skin begins to form. This phase is ideal for setting new intentions, planning new projects, and reflecting on personal goals. This is particularly effective when they relate to the themes of the Sign the New Moon occurs in. We may view this as different cycles unfolding within larger cycles. A shorter 29.5-day cycle, as the Moon completes her journey around the zodiac, or look to the longer cycle of 6 Months. What was illuminated for you at the last Full Moon in Cancer on 27 December 2023 at 4 degrees, and what have you needed to release since then? Also, looking forward to what you will grow in the 6 months ahead until the Full Moon in Cancer on 13 January 2025 at 23 degrees of Cancer. There is also another, even longer story that plays out just after the degree that the New Moon occurs in. This is called the Moon Family as outlined by Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III. If you begin a major Longer term new project around this time, you may expect louder turning points as it progresses around the dates of 5 April 2025, first Quarter Moon, 3 January 2026 Full Moon and 3 October 2026 Last Quarter Moon. This would usually experienced by people if this current lunation is in a close aspect to a planet in their natal chart making it personal to them.The New Moon in Cancer at 14 DegreesThis New Moon in Cancer is particularly exciting to me as it is exactly conjunct fixed star Sirius (at 14.21 degrees Cancer). Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, has been revered by many ancient civilisations for its spiritual power and significance. Known as the Dog Star, it is part of the constellation Canis Major. If you wish to connect with this star at this time, maybe in a New Moon ritual, the gemstone that represents it is Beryl and the plant is Juniper or Mugwort. Sirius: The Brightest StarSirius holds great spiritual power and offers the potential for fame and success, though it can also bring turbulence and challenges. This star is linked to magic and intense creative power, suggesting that great risks can lead to great rewards. The influence of Sirius invites us to tap into a deep and hard-earned understanding of the universe, embracing the journey towards enlightenment and profound insight.Berndadette Brady (in Brady’s Book of Fixed Stars) says that in mythology, Canis Major is one of the hunting dogs of Orion, guarding the gates of another world. The heliacal rising of Sirius, sometimes popularly known as the Lion's Gate, occurs around August 13th and is historically associated with the rising of the Nile in ancient Egypt. This event symbolises the transition from the mundane to the sacred, emphasising the potential for immense success and the caution that such success may come with significant challenges. Historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Diana Spencer, both born with Sirius prominent in their charts, exemplify how this star can bestow a form of immortality through their enduring legacies. Abraham Lincoln was born on the day that Sirius culminated as his Venus set. It is interesting, at least to me and I hope to you too, that as I was taking a break from this writing, I saw this post shared on Social Media by fellow Astrologer Empress Atlantis, it was originally from Pop Crave. Hot on the heels of the height of Summer, the Summer Solstice and the Sun’s entrance into Cardinal Cancer, we greet the Full Moon in Capricorn. Here we are asked to review and assess if our cosy nest has all we need to meet our lofty aspirations. How well are we using our resources, before we can settle, rest and enjoy the comforts of Cancer Season, we must face these questions.The Full Moon is a significant phase in the lunar cycle, often associated with heightened emotions, revelations, and moments of clarity. We are often drawn to this phase of the lunar cycle above all others because it is the one that is most visually stunning. Celestia Astrology is a reader-supported publication. This opposition between our luminaries—the Sun and the Moon—highlights the axis of signs they occupy, allowing us to see things from a broader perspective and gain deeper insights. This month, we are looking at Capricorn and Cancer, our needs for security and nurturing and how this competes with, or supports, our drive to achieve in the world and build something we can be recognised for. It is also significant that in July we will have the New Moon in Cancer, followed by the second Full Moon in Capricorn, so it is important to pay attention to these Capricorn themes this year as the Moon is revisiting them. Also in July, as a look ahead, the Full Moon will occur at the degree that Pluto will be retrograding back over when it returns to Capricorn in September. Sometimes, the Universe has a way of saying, Look Here with a big red arrow to draw our attention. I feel this is one of those times. If we know in advance, we can pay attention to what is unfolding for us.Understanding Full MoonsFull Moons occur approximately once a month when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun in the sky. This alignment illuminates the Moon fully, reflecting the light from the Sun, and also symbolises a peak in the lunar cycle where matters can come to fruition, reach a turning point, or become fully ‘seen’ by us. Each Full Moon is part of a larger cycle that includes the New Moon, First Quarter, and Last Quarter phases, creating a rhythm that influences our lives on multiple levels.A Full Moon also ties into longer cycles, marking significant points in both one-month and six-month periods. The themes that emerge during a Full Moon can often be tied back to the New Moon in the same sign six months earlier, and the themes can be revisited or resolved over the subsequent months. Additionally, the degree of the Full Moon is revisited in a longer cycle over approx 2 and a half years. A New, first quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter Moon will all occur at the same degree. If something significant has happened for you on a New or Full Moon, it is worth tracking the rest of this Moon cycle, I have found it very insightful. Full Moon in CapricornCapricorn is an earth sign ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Time. Things may not move fast here, but they are considered, they have intention and purpose. Capricorn emphasises discipline, responsibility, and the building of solid foundations. With Mars, the planet of Action exalted in Capricorn, there is a force of energy available for focused action and determined progress. Together they represent structures, focused hard work, and the drive to overcome obstacles. This is why we associate the sign with the Mountain Goat after all, there is no obstacle that can stop that Goat from climbing to the pinnacle and achieving their goal.Capricorn is an Earth sign, pragmatic and practical. It is Yin or feminine and it is Cardinal or Tropical, meaning that it will initiate action through strong initiative. A Full Moon here may be showing us where we need to take determined action in our own lives. Capricorn Decan I – Laying the GroundworkThis Full Moon in Capricorn occurs in the first decan of Capricorn. Astrologer Kira Ryberg calls this Decan Inertia and Austin Coppock has named it The Headless Man! The Decan is ruled by Jupiter in the Descending Order Method and Saturn in the Triplicity Method.In the Wild Way Oracle Deck, Nicola Allan has named this Decan Laying the Groundwork, associating the themes here with establishing a sense of place and grounding our judgments. We learn about our limitations here and make considered decisions about our resources. Planting Seeds of PossibilityIn astrology, new moons represent new beginnings, fresh starts, and the initiation of a new cycle. It's a time to make new plans, plant seeds for the future, and embrace fresh possibilities. New moons occur when the sun and moon meet in the same zodiac sign, causing the moon to be hidden from our perspective on Earth. This New Moon occurs in Gemini's communicative and curious sign, at 16 degrees, at 12.37 PM UTC on 6 June 2024. Gemini teaches us about the Intellectual Sphere and Communication, we enjoy a beginner’s mind seeing the world with playful curiosity, learning, dissecting, and exploring new ideas. So, under this New Moon, we might feel particularly drawn to intellectual pursuits, maybe expanding our knowledge or understanding, communication, and social interactions.Gemini New Moon: A 6-Month or 2-Week Cycle?The Gemini new moon's influence can be viewed in two ways:* Short-Term (2 Weeks): Considering the moon cycle itself, the seeds you plant during this new moon will likely see some initial growth and momentum within the next two weeks, culminating at the Full Moon in Capricorn (22 June 2024). * Long-Term (6 Months): Gemini's energy resonates strongly with communication, learning, and exploration. The next full moon in Gemini, which occurs in six months (15 December 2024), might be a more significant marker for the fruition of your longer term plans set under this new moon. This full moon could represent a time of seeing the bigger picture, receiving feedback on your communication efforts, or even initiating collaborations related to your initial intentions.Understanding Gemini's DualityGemini, which is often symbolised by the twins, is a Mutable, Air and Masculine, or Yang sign.Mutable signs fall at the end of each season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and are known for their adaptability and flexibility. They represent the ability to transition and bridge the gap between different energies. They have a great ability to go with the flow and can easily pivot. However, this can mean they may struggle with completing the multiple tasks they are juggling or committing to for the long term.Air signs are often admired as intellectual, communicative, and social. They are drawn to ideas, learning, and exchange of information. The challenge is to bring those ideas and thought forms out of the cloud and into practical, grounded form.Gemini embodies the ability to adapt, communicate, and explore different ideas and perspectives. It's a sign that thrives on duality and seeing various sides of an issue. Gemini may often be found with multiple irons in the fire.Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, curiosity, and mental agility. Mercury may be known as the Messenger of the Gods and Hermes. Mercury will be moving through the sign of Gemini at the time of the New Moon which adds some power to the ability to achieve its significations. This is because Mercury is in its home sign, or domicile, so doesn’t have to defer to a ruling planet as it would if it were placed in another sign.This influence during this new moon emphasises themes such as Clear Communication, Learning and Exploration, and Seeking out new knowledge and perspectives. Social Connection, Building relationships and fostering connections Mental Dexterity, Thinking critically, solving problems, and adapting to new ideas.Mercury is known as a planet of duality, without gender, Mercury travels further than any other planet, even the Moon. Mercury has access between worlds and this is why it is sometimes known as the Messenger or a Psychopomp. The Second Decan of GeminiThis Gemini new moon also tells its own story due to its placement in the second decan. Austin Coppock offers the image for this Decan of a Hermaphrodite. The second decan of Gemini represents the reconciliation of opposing forces within ourselves. The Second Decan of Gemini is ruled by Venus in the Triplicity Scheme and Mars in the Descending order method. This decan suggests a potent mix of Venusian charm and Martian drive combined with Mercury’s Intellectual influence. The corresponding Tarot card, the Nine of Swords, depicts the struggle to confront difficult truths within. We see how our thoughts and ideas can become swords that cause us harm. There’s an uncomfortable feeling as we attempt to reconcile so many disparate parts of self into one congruent whole. This is why Astrologer Kira Ryberg aptly calls this decan Complexity. Nothing is straightforward here and the nuance must be attended to. The Full Moon in Scorpio, 24 April 2024 marks the closure of the eclipse season in Libra and Aries. A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and the Moon are in opposite signs, in this case Scorpio and Taurus. Symbolically, it represents the culmination of energies, illumination, and heightened emotions. It's a time of fruition, revelation, and letting go of what we have outgrown. Scorpio is ruled by Mars the Warrior Planet. It is the Yin, or Feminine and Water expression of the action oriented planet. Here, we can be plunged into the depths of our subconscious, confronting our deepest desires, fears, and transformations. Mars, the fiery warrior, is currently transiting the dreamy depths of oceanic Pisces. Moving closer to an engagement with Neptune, the planet of illusion and spirituality. This conjunction, on 29 April, may ignite our passions and blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, urging us to channel our energies into creative endeavours or spiritual pursuits. The Sun, symbolic archetype of our conscious self and life purpose, is joined by Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus. A Solar Eclipse will happen at the same time as a New Moon and this one is in Aries, representing the start of the astrological new year. Aries is the Cardinal, Yang or Masculine, outgoing and action oriented Temple of fiery, courageous warrior planet Mars. We find Mars currently swimming in the watery, expansive depths deep in the feels of Pisces. Aries is the sign of the exaltation of the sun and the Sun will also be exactly at the degree of its exaltation. This draws attention from astrologers and doubles down on the delineation that this Eclipse has something meaningful, of a Solar and Mars nature to bring into the world. It is in the decan of the sun, Aries II. In both traditions of astrology, the Sun rules this decan and this also draws our attention. Austin Coppock gives the image of the crown and in theWild Way Oracle Deck we see the bear wearing the crown. T Susan Chang titles this Decan 'The Kingdom of Gold'. The Wild Way Oracle deck by Nicola Allan titles this Decan 'Take the Lead' and depicts the Aries Bear wearing his Crown ruling his forest from his rocky throne. The Total Solar Eclipse will be visible in 15 states of America and the partial eclipse will be visible in all states. It will be 2044 before America sees another total eclipse. When layered on the 2023 eclipse path, the two form the shape of a cross. It is from Saros series 139, an 18 year cycle where the eclipses fall in the same place, but gradually move forward by 10 degrees or so. This is eclipse no 30 of 71 in the series. You may remember previous eclipses which fell in this part of your birth chart. If you experienced major shifts in 1970, 1988 or 2006 then it is more likely you may experience similar themes with a different flavour or seasoning this year. This Eclipse is conjunct the wounded healer Chiron and also co present with retrograde mercury and direct Venus. There is no sight of ruler Mars who has yet to gain dignity by bound or decan which will come later in April (16th). With the Rulers of this Eclipse, Venus and Saturn together in Pisces I take a deeper look to unpack what this Eclipse may mean for us. Its shadow will be visible across much of Europe, North/East Asia, much of Australia, much of Africa, North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, Antarctica. The last eclipses in this cycle were March 2006, March 1988 and February 1970. We’ve been having eclipses in the Taurus/Scorpio axis for 2 half years and last year that began to shift. We had the first libra solar eclipse on 14 October beginning this story, and an Aries Solar Eclipse on 20 April 23. This is a continuation and development of that story. We may expect to find complications in relationships being brought to our attention. Reviewing who and what we are bound to, through love, devotion, compassion or karmic soul contracts. We may feel a drive to breakthrough and move forward onto our path with a need to weigh the Libran scales. We cant go forward while ignoring what is pulling us back into watery depths of subconscious (pisces) where the Rulers are meeting and gathering information to support this process in Jupiters benefit temple. The New Moon is in Dreamy, Ethereal Pisces at 20 degrees on 10 March. I will look first at the Astrology of this moment in time followed by an Astromindfulness exercise which starts at 11mins.It is in the generous Temple of ruler Jupiter who is the master of dreams and beliefs. This is a Water element, feminine, Yin sign.We find Jupiter currently transiting Taurus and the exaltation ruler of Pisces, Venus, Goddess of Beauty and Peace will be in Airy Aquarius. These are both bringing fixed energy to the mutable water sign of Pisces which offers a chance to see through the dreams we begin to nurture now.It is the sign where Messenger Mercury is in both fall and detriment, but Mercury has just finished its transit of Pisces and left for Aries and is currently at 0 degrees so communications are reset with this new moon and the intuitive information that Mercury gleaned in Pisces can now be brought into our actions.Pisces is a feminine, yin sign which means it looks inward, it is reflective and prefers to remember, wish and dream.
