What legacy would you choose if you could?As the Sun and Moon oppose each other in a supercharged full moon at 23° Virgo conjunct the South Node in Virgo and the North Node and Saturn in Pisces, the reflected light of the Moon becomes temporarily blocked by the earth as the alignment forms and then separates. They may bring moments of clarity, revelation, and completion, or begin a process which unfolds slowly. Chris Brennan of The Astrology Podcast, who has conducted extensive research on eclipses tells us they usher in great beginnings and great endings. A Full Moon, especially an eclipsed one, marks an ending, culmination, or release. These lunations can be intense, often pushing us toward decisive action, breakthroughs, or necessary closures. However, events may often be seemingly insignificant at first and grow into greater endings to create room for significant beginnings, over time. As the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, for the Lunar Eclipse, they come into a perfect alignment in the sky, casting the Moon into the Earth’s shadow. This creates a temporary loss of reflected light (Moon), a moment where something once visible is obscured, only to return with deeper insight once the shadow passes. Once the light returns, like a bridge being crossed into new land, you can never go back, you cannot unsee this new land that is different to what you knew before. Something has permanently shifted within you. This particular eclipse is on the Virgo-Pisces axis, balancing themes of material reality vs. the unseen world and practical legacy vs. spiritual surrender.Three Ways to Work With This Lunar Cycle Monthly Cycle: Reflect on what is culminating now from the New Moon 2 weeks earlier and what new structures need to be put in place. Six-Month Cycle: This Full Moon connects back to the New Moon in Virgo (3 September 2024). What was initiated or which seeds were planted for you then, and what results are emerging now? Two-Year Moon Family Cycle: This Eclipse is part of a larger Lunar arc that began in September 2023 and will conclude in December 2025. Consider what long-term changes might have been unfolding. The Moon Families are a longer sequence of interconnected lunations that weave a narrative over 28 months. This practice of connecting and linking the hidden threads of Lunar Cycles is outlined by Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III.Understanding the Virgo Moon Family CycleThis two-year lunar family cycle began with the New Moon at 21° Virgo on September 15, 2023, the story then unfolds in phases until the Last Quarter Moon on December 11, 2025. Each phase builds upon the last, revealing key developments in a longer story.This Virgo Moon Family is most felt by those with planets or angles in the mutable signs, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini or the Earth triplicity, Virgo, Capricorn and Taurus, between 17 to 26 degrees. Also, those with Mercury as their Chart ruler or Lord of the Year. You may choose to consciously work with any of these cycles and choose the length that suits how long it will take to grow your plans, ie for a quick short term goal the monthly cycle is perfect but for long term plans, look for a Moon Family that connects with the relevant planet in your chart for optimum results. New Moon in Pisces: Finding Your Path28th February, 2025 PM 00.44 AM UT 9° PiscesAllow me to explore for you some of the astrological threads of the New Moon in Pisces on 28th February, maybe we can even begin to weave some together by sharing and breathing life into them. With this New Moon in Pisces, we are invited to surrender and float in deep waters, into the liminal spaces where reality and dreams intertwine. This is a time ripe for exploring the unseen, the intangible, and the emotional landscapes that shape our world.As the Sun and Moon meet at 9° Pisces, we enter a moment of deep introspection and renewal. This New Moon, the latest in a series of 9° lunations, from the vast, uncharted waters of Pisces I—a decan co-ruled by Jupiter and Saturn, is blending boundless faith with the weight of mature responsibility. We are now standing on the threshold of eclipse season, the Sun is 19 degrees from the co-present North Node in Pisces, amplifying this New Moon and setting the stage for transformations that will unfold in the coming months. The themes emerging now may gain intensity in the coming weeks, or lead to significant new beginnings or endings and could become part of our eclipse story. This cycle extends over 28/36 months, progressing through four key lunar phases at roughly nine-month intervals, offering a much broader arc of development.These interconnected lunations emphasise themes of planning, stability and maturing growth over this longer time. Full Moon in Leo: Strength Under FireA New Battle for Leo LunationsAllow me to pull on the Astrological threads and maybe weave some of them together for the 12th February, 2025 13.53 PM Universal Time at 24° Leo.This Leo Full Moon of 2025 blazes in and asks us to raise our banner, and choose our side in the enduring, steady regal warming light of Leo. Here we are being faced with themes of personal sovereignty, self-expression, and our place within the larger collective. As the Moon reaches her peak in the domicile or home sign of her Luminary partner, the Sun, this lunation invites us to consider what battles we fight, whether internal or external and seek out what is truly aligned with our authentic self. This Full Moon in Leo carries a different energy than those of the past three decades. With Pluto now in Aquarius to continue its onward journey, every Leo Full Moon for the next 20 years will be defined by an intense opposition to the planet of transformation, regeneration, power, and the underworld. This shows the possibility of internal and external power struggles, particularly for the fixed signs, The Fixed, Fire, and Yang Nature of LeoLeo, as a fixed fire sign, embodies the sustained passion of the flames, creative endurance, and unwavering personal power. Fire represents the vital force of inspiration and courage, instinct and knowing, while its fixed modality grants it staying power, determination, and resistance to change unless self-directed. As a yang sign, Leo expresses itself outwardly, radiating warmth, confidence, and responds well to the recognition it seeks. This combination makes Leo a natural leader, capable of enduring hardships while maintaining a presence. New Moon in Aquarius: Innovation or Rebellion?January 29, 2025 12:35 PM UT 9° AquariusAllow me to picture and paint for you some of the astrological threads of the New Moon in Aquarius on January 29th, maybe we can even begin to weave some together by sharing and breathing life into them. New Moons offer an opportunity to reset and reimagine, a fresh slate and new beginning. Aquarius, the starry water-bearer, symbolises the flow of knowledge and ideas, pouring wisdom and insight into the collective consciousness. Picture in your imagination the air flowing and moving between the open space of its astrological glyph which looks like two wavy lines, moving together but not touching, never meeting. Two ideas, two things that may be true at once, perhaps?Aquarius: The Visionary RebelAquarius may often be seen as the zodiac’s revolutionary, offering a progressive, humanitarian spirit, concerned with humanity and the collective. It blends the air element, fixed modality, and yang (or masculine and outgoing) polarity creating an impressive and unique blend of intellectual stability and forward-thinking dynamism. This makes this lunation an ideal time to innovate, expand your horizons, and detach from any confines of convention and your comfort zone. Ruled by Saturn, the Lord of Time and Outer Boundaries, we can find things that are out of this world here, beyond the boundaries of what we think we know. Saturn can signify impermanence, decay, maturity, discipline and wisdom out of hardship or limitation. Saturn’s cycle is the longest of the planets which were seen by the ancients and tracked over thousands of years, taking 28 to 30 years to transit through the zodiac. This November 1, 2024, the Scorpio New Moon occurs at 9°35' of Scorpio. It offers us a new beginning infused with the Martial intensity and raw force of Scorpio’s fixed energy. New Moons symbolise fresh starts, a time to plant seeds for the future. This New Moon in Scorpio is ruled by Mars, which is currently moving through Cancer meaning it is in Mutual Reception with the Scorpio Moon. It is in the bound of Venus. The New Moon falls in Scorpio's first decan, a place where desire is ferocious, and the will to attain is unyielding. Scorpio is fixed, feminine, meaning more internal and receptive and is the water element, making this New Moon an ideal time to address long standing desires and passions that run beneath the surface. Mars, the ruler of this Scorpio New Moon is currently in its fall in Cancer. Mars is typically assertive, action-oriented, bold, and direct, but in Moon ruled Cancer, its energy can become more protective, emotionally driven, and indirect. Mars in Cancer can express itself through defense of home, family, and personal security, rather than through outward assertion or aggression.We also find Mars moving through its pre-retrograde shadow, and forming a tense opposition to Pluto in Capricorn. This will be the first pass in a series of connections that will continue as both planets shift into Leo and Aquarius in the coming months. This opposition may reveal or highlight tension, power struggles, hidden motives, and deep emotional confrontations, it can also bring a slower, karmic understanding of previously hidden dynamics in your life. The Moon, and particularly a New Moon can act as a trigger, or translator, for bringing the information from the planetary aspects directly to us on Earth. This is the last New Moon with Pluto in Capricorn that we will experience in our lifetimes. The Cycles of the New MoonEvery New Moon signals the beginning of a new lunar cycle, offering a clean slate for new intentions and fresh starts. We are familiar with the feeling, as we experience one every month. The monthly cycle lasts about 28 days, from one New Moon to the next. For the New Moon in Scorpio on November 1, 2024, the monthly cycle will culminate with the Full Moon in Taurus on November 15, 2024, and will have completed by the New Moon in Sagittarius on 1 December 2024.The longer emotional and transformational journey tied to this New Moon can be worked with until you see a culmination at the Full Moon in Scorpio on May 12, 2025. Over this six-month period, the seeds of emotional intensity, regeneration, and personal power that are planted or initiated during this New Moon can reach their full potential. The Moon Family Cycle: A Longer JourneyThis New Moon also marks the beginning of a Moon Family cycle, as described by Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III. This cycle extends over 28 months, progressing through four key lunar phases at roughly nine-month intervals, offering a broader arc of development.* The First Quarter Moon in this cycle will occur on August 1, 2025, at 9° Scorpio, when the seeds planted at this New Moon will first face challenges or demand some correcting action. It will be a time of adjusting your path and making decisions that will further your goals.* The Full Moon arrives on May 1, 2026, at 11° Scorpio, bringing clarity and culmination to the themes initiated at the New Moon in November 2024. At this time, you will begin to see the full manifestation of the desires and intentions set now. You might expect heightened emotions, deep revelations, and transformation.* The Last Quarter Moon will occur on January 29, 2027, at 9° Scorpio. This offers a time to assess what has been achieved, make adjustments, and let go of what has been outgrown. The cycle will come to a close, but its lessons and transformations will continue to resonate in your life.Working with the Moon Family cycle means setting intentions now with the knowledge that they will unfold in stages over the next two years. This event marks the closing of a significant 2 year cycle of transformation for the Libra Aries axis, not only for the cardinal signs of Libra, Aries, Cancer, and Capricorn, but possibly also for those with significant Venus and Saturn placements in their natal charts. Solar eclipses may bring new beginnings and offer radical shifts in consciousness. When combined with the specific symbolism of the annular eclipse, Libra’s cardinal air energy, and the guiding ruling planets Venus and Saturn, this eclipse offers a profound invitation for recalibration and rebalancing, especially in relationships, justice, and harmony.What is an Annular Solar Eclipse?An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the Moon is too far from Earth to completely cover the Sun. On September 18, 2024, or possibly the 17th depending on your timezone, a partial lunar eclipse will take place at 25°40’ Pisces. It occurs at 3.34 am in the UK where I am based, 2.34 am UT. This eclipse is an introduction to a cycle that will continue through 2025 and 2026, with similar eclipses in Pisces and Virgo marking the end of summer each year. This is the first of three lunar eclipses in Pisces, initiating a period which offers us deep spiritual reflection, surrender, and transformation. The Pisces-Virgo axis invites us to explore themes of service, spirituality, and the balance between the material and the ethereal. We are likely to explore questions and themes such as How does being of service to others also reward and feed our soul? Are we so spiritual that we are detached from the material world, and if so, how can we ground ourselves in practical, earthly matters? How do our dreams impact on our waking life?This eclipse occurs with the Sun applying to meet the fixed star Alkaid. Alkaid has long been associated with themes of mourning, protection, and cyclic change. It adds a layer of sombre reflection to this lunar eclipse, suggesting that this is a time to honour what has passed, embrace transitions, and prepare for new beginnings with a spirit of surrender.What is a Lunar Eclipse?A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow over the Moon. Unlike a normal Full Moon, where the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs, a lunar eclipse adds the weight of the Earth’s shadow, symbolising supercharged moments of culmination, closure, and revelation.Lunar eclipses highlight the need to release old patterns and beliefs, illuminating what must be let go in order to move forward. They may correspond with emotional and spiritual breakthroughs, bringing unresolved issues to light. A Full Moon alone is a time of heightened awareness, but during a lunar eclipse, this effect is amplified and is more likely to have a lasting impact on our lives, especially if it aspects planets in our birth chart. Eclipses may accelerate events, causing major endings, major beginnings, or shifts that may have been building beneath the surface for some time.The Significance of a Pisces Lunar EclipseThis partial lunar eclipse takes place in Pisces, a mutable, femine or yin, water sign associated with intuition, compassion, and the dissolution of boundaries. Pisces is ruled by Jupiter and has Venus as the Exaltation Ruler. Jupiter is the planet of hope, faith and wisdom as well as growth. As the Moon is eclipsed in Pisces, its connection with our Earth is temporarily interrupted. Like a computer being switched off and on again, there is a sense of a reset. During this eclipse, we may find ourselves needing to balance these two energies, learning to integrate the practical aspects of life with a sense of higher purpose.The Eclipse Cycle and Moon Family: Past and FutureThis partial lunar eclipse is part of a Saros cycle, a repeating pattern of eclipses that recur approximately every 18 years. The Saros cycle organizes eclipses into families or series that span over a thousand years. Each series begins with penumbral eclipses, then transitions through partial and total eclipses, before eventually ending with another set of penumbral eclipses. This particular eclipse is number 52 of 73 in its series 118, set to end in 2962.This Saros cycle brings a thematic recurrence of events and energies. For this eclipse, we can look back 18 years to see what was occurring in our lives in relation to the Pisces-Virgo axis, as similar themes may re-emerge. On September 3rd, 2024, at 2:55 AM BST (1:55 AM UT), the New Moon will occur at 11°04' in the sign of Virgo. This lunation brings with it opportunities for new beginnings, fresh starts, and a chance to set intentions with precision and care.The Meaning of New MoonsIn astrology, New Moons signify the beginning of a new lunar cycle. The Moon and the Sun meet in the same sign during this phase, symbolising a merging of conscious and unconscious energies. At this time, there is no light from the Moon, making it unable to reflect the Sun's rays. This darkness represents a blank slate, a moment when we can plant seeds of intention, deep in the darkness, the safety of the symbolic womb of the dark earth, that with tending, we plan and hope to grow and develop over the coming weeks and months.New Moons are traditionally seen as times to initiate projects, start new habits, or set goals. I believe it is a time to stop, pause, review and reflect in the darkness of the sky to plan the seeds you wish to plant. I prefer to wait until we see the first slivers of light of the waxing moon, to carry my intentions and plans forward.The themes and energies associated with the sign in which the New Moon occurs for you in your individual natal chart will colour these new beginnings, providing a framework for our intentions. The New Moon in Virgo: Mutable Earth EnergyThis New Moon occurs in Virgo, a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, intellect, and adaptability. Virgo’s energy is grounded, practical, and detail-oriented, focusing on efficiency, precision, and the pursuit of excellence. However, Virgo also carries an underlying tension, as it often strives for an unattainable perfection. This paradox of seeking perfection in an imperfect world can create a constant drive to improve, refine, and correct. Virgo arrives at the transitional season of weather, just before the weather and the quality of light changes when the Sun moves into Cardinal Libra. Virgo is the time of harvest, there are decisions to be made, and assessments of quality. Although we are no longer a predominately agricultural society, it is still wise to use this time to reflect on the light half of the year we have travelled through before we face the shorter, darker days of the second half of the astrological year. The metaphorical harvest that we preserve now, the seeds we save from it to replant, will need to serve and see us through another winter season and support the new growth next spring. The mutable quality of Virgo adds an element of flexibility and adaptability, allowing us to adjust our plans and intentions as we move forward. This energy encourages us to be meticulous in our efforts, paying attention to the finer details with the potential to remain open to change and growth.Virgo and Mercury: The Power of the MindMercury, the ruler of Virgo, is known for its versatility and ability to traverse different realms—both physical, intellectual and esoterical. In mythology, Mercury (or Hermes) was a messenger who could travel between the world of the gods, the mortal realm and the Underworld, embodying the power of communication and movement between different states of being. He was known as the Messenger God for this reason. Mercury is the planet that travels closest to the Earth (after our Moon which orbits the Earth rather than the Sun). Mercury also retrogrades most frequently, but usually only for 21 days, the shortest retrograde period. This means He meets more regularly with the Sun in Cazimi, a powerful moment of death and rebirth. As the ruler of this New Moon, Mercury sets the agenda. Mercury is currently in Leo, where there is no line of sight to Virgo, it is now direct having finished retrograding, emerging from its shadow period and gaining in strength. This suggests that while the New Moon in Virgo may highlight areas where we need to refine our thinking or communication, the momentum for progress is steadily building as the Moon waxes fuller.The Cycles of the Moon: Monthly, Six-Month, and the Moon FamilyAstrologically, the Moon’s cycles can be tracked in several ways. The most immediate is the monthly lunar cycle, which spans approximately 28 days from New Moon to New Moon. However, there is also a six-month cycle between a New Moon and the subsequent Full Moon in the same sign, when the seeds planted during the New Moon come to a fuller fruition.Beyond these, there is a more extended cycle known as the Moon Family, as illustrated by astrologer Dietrich Pessin in Lunar Shadows III. It offers us a potent moment of culmination, revelation, and deep introspection. The Aquarius Full Moon invites us to explore the tension between the familiar and our comfort zone and the unknown possibilities and potential, between stability and our desire for liberation.Understanding Full Moons: A Time of Culmination, Illumination, and RevelationA Full Moon occurs when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun, occupying signs of the same modality, for this Moon fixed or solid signs, Aquarius and Leo. During this time, the light from the Sun fully illuminates the Moon, allowing it to shine at its brightest and symbolically cast its light on the areas of our lives that may need attention, action or awareness. In astrology, Full Moons represent a time of culmination—where the intentions, actions, and energies that were set in motion during the New Moon come to fruition.This phase can be associated with revelations or new understandings, as the opposition between the Sun and Moon brings to light truths that were previously hidden. Emotions may run high, the time can be challenging, with disrupted sleep and unsettled pets.
