Episode 82 - The Death Of Conal Cearnach - Post Show Chats

E

Ending our death series on a lighter note with the post show chat we had about the death of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Our holiday bubble came to a sudden end early in January, and just before Sorcha returned home to Dublin, we had a chance to chat about the death of this great hero. We also enjoyed the deepening of her Cork accent and generally shite talked about how enjoyable the death series was for us and why it’s important to look back on these set of stories. Conall Cearnach was the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, and he was spectacular in his own way, so we had loads to talk about. Crooked necked and touched with an otherworldly beauty, he was vicious in battle and boasted that he never went to bed without the severed head of a Connaughtman under his knee. But what happens to a hero who is unbeatable? Who is so fierce and so terrifying that he wins all his battles? What happens when he grows old, and slow, and sick? What were the honour systems in place in that society and what were the deeper meanings to these stories. Conall Cearnach found his own way to get the death he always wanted, and the death series has come to a dramatic end with his demise. He and Cúchulainn will be back in action in the next episode however, as we tell ‘Bichru’s Feast’. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 81 - Death Of Conal Cearnach

E

Ending our death series on a lighter note (can you have a lighter note in a Death series?) is the story of Conall Cearnach, the second greatest hero of Ulster. Always the runner-up to his younger cousin, Cúchulainn, Conall was spectacular in his own way. If that hero is Conall Cearnach, he finds a way to get the death he always wanted. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 80 - The Death of CuChulainn - Post Show Chats

E

The penultimate story in our Death Series is the death of one of the greatest of all heroes: Cúchulainn. This story and discussion was recorded in early 2020, though we thought the better of releasing tales of glorious death at the time… turns out now is as good a time as any. Cúchulainn’s death was long foretold. From the moment he took up arms as a boy, he knew that his life would be brief, and full of pain. But he knew that his story would stay on the lips of storytellers until the end of time, and that seemed a good bargain to a young boy. Here, he faces his final battle, still reaching for glory. Episode 78 - The Death Of Medb - Post Show Chat

E

We are talking about the Death of Medbh in this episode and we also talk about our online storytelling course. The storytelling course is 2 hours per week, Saturdays from 3-5 pm over 6 weeks, starting on the 9th of January. Each session will start with a short lecture on the day's theory topic, and the rest of the session is interactive practical exercises, exploring that aspect of storytelling that we have chosen. We are pricing it at €50 per class (so €300 in total) but if you are interested and struggling with finances we can talk about what you're able to afford (the world is mental at the moment so we want to include as many people as possible that would like to do this course). We will be using Irish myths as the material to practice on and play with throughout the course. Participants will be helped to choose a story or character to focus on, and will work on that story throughout the course, performing it at the end of the course. https://candlelittales.ie/product/storytelling-training-online-zoom/ Email us on [email protected] to reserve your spot. Aron also mentioned his the books he’s been reading over winter and these have been: The Mammoth Book of Celtic Myths and Legands by Peter Berresford Ellis Mythical Irish Wonders written and illustrated by Mark Joyce & Thirty Two Words for Field by Manchán Magan Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 77 - The Death Of Medb

E

Fourth in our Death Series is the death of the Woman King herself, Medb of Connaught. Medb’s family was a strange one, and her infamous sister Clothru cast a long shadow. In later days, the kings of Ireland made every effort to trace their lineages back to her, however much her actions came under question. For her part, Medb chose to retire, as many great rulers did, passing on the throne of Connaught to her successor and going to live in peace and seclusion. But her past deeds, and her tangled family tree, came back to claim her in the end. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 76 The Death of Conchubar Mac Nessa - Post Show Chat

E

Third in our Death Series is the strange and prolonged death of Conchubar Mac Nessa, King of Ulster, and in this episode we chat about the connection he had with the one and only Jesus Christ. Timely too seeing as its just gone Christmas and the celebration of the birth of the same man… but this episode is dedicated to a boy born on the 26th of December 2020, and that boys name is Anthony Nahual Hegarty, our brothers first born child. Now back to th mythology... Conchubar is a wily king and remembered as a great leader. As well as sound judgement, he was a man of great beauty, and great vanity. Over the years, we’ve come to wonder at his wonderful reputation, but there’s no doubt that he left a lasting legacy. At some time in the retelling of this tale, Concubar’s birth and death was linked with another mythic figure, from far away, in the East. Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 74 -The Death Of Celtchar Mac Utherchar - Post Show Chat

E

The second in our Death series, this story and discussion was recorded in early 2020. We decided at the time that stories of glorious death might not be the thing to be releasing, so we shelved them for a while. He has to have one of the greatest names in Irish mythology: Celtchar Mac Uthechar. A lesser-known hero of the Ulaid, Celtchar appears in some of the stories of the Ulster Cycle, but his greatest story is the story of his death. A quest to rid Ulster of its three greatest pests, this story is one of the most determined to ignore linear time of any story in Irish mythology, and that’s saying something! Produced and edited by Oisin Ryan, with music by Oisin Ryan, story by Sorcha Hegarty and Aron Hegarty. We mentioned this video by the Tale Foundry in this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxLtDNGq1A4 And you can find a translation of the Death Tale of Celtchar Mac Uthechair in the UCC electronic folklore archives: The Death-Tales of the Ulster Heroes Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 71 - The Death of Cú Roi Mac Daire

E

The first of our Death Series to round out what has been a hell of a year! Death Stories are their own genre in Irish mythology and the last chance anyone has at what our ancestors thought of as immortality: to be talked about, as long as there were people to talk about you and storytellers to tell your tale. Cú Roi Mac Daire is a powerful, enigmatic figure around the fringes of the Ulster Cycle. A mysterious warrior and wielder of magic, he was sometimes friendly to the Ulaid and sometimes their foe. Cú Roi was said to have dedicated his life to searching for Fíor Fir: the Truth that lies in the heart of man. But he might have been better served had he not ignored Fíor Mná, for it was the truth in the heart of woman that he overlooked in the end. Episode 70 - 6th Birthday Post Show Live Chat Special

E

We are 6 years old and we are having a party online! Join us to chat about the Táin on Sunday 6th December at 7pm. We will be talking about the latest episodes where we released a special edition Táin recording. Check it out if you missed it. Here we will be going LIVE ON YOUTUBE to chat about this epic myth and all the madness of 2020. Sorcha read somewhere once upon a time, that An Táin Bó Culaigne was the tale that should be told after dark and in the dark half of the year. So, six years ago, in a small pub in Dublin we started telling the Táin. There were about 10 people there at the time. Each week the numbers grew and grew, and at the end of the tale, there were people crammed in, and listening from the stairwell outside the room. For the past 6 years, every year we celebrated by telling the Táin as we did the very first time at a live show. This one never gets old either. Each year we found a new way to tell it, more details to enhance, or perspectives to examine. It’s an epic, so it was possibly told in the dark months to last the entire winter. Over the years we worked on a number of versions of this story, and ‘The Shadows of the Táin’ was the final script we came up with and premiered in Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin in collaboration with the Shadow Puppetry of ‘Flight of Fancy’. We toured this show in the last couple of years, and have had plans of performing it live again and again… but without live venues open, we decided to do something different with this script. The last three episodes of the Podcast was that something different. Sorcha is narrating this on her own this time, and Rurai O'Shea (the first musician we ever collaborated with) took this reading and added the soundscape and music to it as his lockdown project. And aren't we lucky to be able to collaborate with such an artist. This one is based during Samhain and what a time to tell it as the winter closes in and the dark half of the year settles around us. The King Conaire Mór had a bit of a poisoned chalice when he was given the Kingship and had a number if extremely precise geasa he was sworn not to break… unfortunately for him he broke the first, on Samhain eve, and he could do little to stop himself breaking the rest. Conaire Mór is one of the semi-historic figures we have in the Kings Cycle of Irish Mythology. His birth ties him into the Story of Midir and Etáin, and for those of you not familiar to this story, you can listen to episode 13 of our podcast for a recap of that story. Produced and edited by Oisin Ryan, with music by Oisin Ryan, This story was constructed by Aron and Sorcha Hegarty, and this one is voiced by Aron Hegarty. This story is a bit mad and the main thing we will talk about is probably how we did it/ how we do the music for the podcasts in general. Saying that I think it will be messy if we have four voices talking about the topics on this story. So I suggest that I to Sorcha for a half hour first on a couple of the following ideas, and then at half one Ru and Oisin come in to offer the musical perspective: Themes in this story: After a quick re-cap of this story we talk about the following: Notes I want to mention briefly - the Native American relief thing which is great, the closing down of Bewleys in Dublin, and the Darkness into light this week. Bealtaine and the rest.... The abusive relationship element that appears at the start. The idea of disposable warriors/young men in war (this jumped out at me as a thing in this). Survival of the tribe depends on the sacrifices of young men - .... thoughts? Then that can lead us to Grainne and her position in this story. Her sympathy of the grieving wife and her lament. The lack of a second source and the difficulty we had with getting the story right due to its weird beats - the rythm and the moods. This last one brings in the lads to talk about: How ye put Music to beats Live vs Podcast Why was this one so hard? Episode 35.5 - Eachtach Post Show Live Chat

Sibling Telepathy in the music of the previous two episodes that tell the back-story of these two anyway. Music and how it affect the story. Live music and the difference between live recordings of the stories and the podcast versions. Different, can we ask for feedback from our listeners? The Sugar Club night - Imbolc, special night! Had planned on going back there. We will be back for sure… just not so sure when that will be necessarily! The Story! Eachtach as a character - only one version Richard March Bright Blue Blade- The rightful ruler of the Fianna was not given her chance, and so the demise of the Fianna happened shortly after. When the wrong people are in charge … bad things happen, that’s a given, but when the right person doesn't get given the role they deserve it seems to inflict more doom in the potential false prosperity that person might bring. Like the world would be perfect now if Bernie was in charge of America…? https://www.patreon.com/candlelittales http://candlelittales.ie/ https://open.spotify.com/show/2102WuUUe9Jl6cGXNwQEKf https://soundcloud.com/candlelittales https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/candlelit-tales-irish-mythology-podcast/ https://twitter.com/candlelit_tales?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/candlelittales/ https://www.instagram.com/candlelittales/ https://vimeo.com/user52850249 https://www.youtube.com/candlelittales
