Episode 133 - Echoes - Post Show Chats for Episode 130

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and to the post show chat about our collaboration with ‘The Embers Collective’. In this episode we will hear from Sam Rixy and Aron Hegarty as they compare notes about the stories they shared, as well as hearing Sorcha Hegarty's take on the whole thing. If you missed episode 130 of this series, have a listen now to that episode to avoid spoilers, or after if you prefer. The next two episodes will be more post show chats about the previous stories in this series. For now, Sam Rixy tells us about what the story of Isis and Hypnosis means to him, while Aron explains what themes he tried to echo in the story of Boann and Dagda, and Sorcha offers her own observations and questions between the two. If you enjoyed this conversation or thought of something we didn’t mention, please let us know. For this new series, ‘Echoes’, we have teamed up with London-based Storytelling Company ‘The Embers Collective’, who tell global folktales and myths set to live music. They gave us three stories, we found the Irish equivalent. We chose stories that we thought ‘echoed’ something intrinsic in these stories, and while not always obvious at first, we hope you agree there is a subtle level of repetition in these stories. When any story is told, you can hear others echo in its re-telling. We often get messages about how the great warrior Cuchulainn reminds people of the hero Achilles. How Fionn is our Odin, or Manannan Mac Lir our version of Poseidon or Neptune. And when you look at any of the great stories, you will often find a familiar aspect echoed in other mythologies. Similar structures are used or similar events are described. Sometimes it can even be as blatant of the exact same plot points are used with different names. So we decided to record a few of these for this podcast. Episode 129 - Fintan and the Hawk of Achill - Post Show Chats

E

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. And this is the very last episode of a long series taken from the Book of Invasions. This cycle of Irish Myth is also known as the “Mythic Cycle” of Irish Mythology and we are sad to close the lid on this chapter… for now. We talk about the whole season, the music, and the madness that is contained in it. We also reflect on our process, how much has changed in a year, and how much we’ve grown thanks to our supporters on Patreon and our followers on YouTube and other Podcast Platforms. You have all helped us grow, invest in our podcast, and improve the quality of what we put out. So thank you to everyone who supports us in every way. This last chat is about one of our favourite characters in Irish Mythology, and it is one that we hoped you enjoyed last week. A deep dive into the mind of a man who has lived for thousands of years and all that would come with the mental strain of seeing trees blossom, grow, age, then fall and decay. All in what appears to be a single year of your life. We could hardly get our heads around that, but we chatted about it anyway and we’d love to hear from you in case you had a different thought on the matter. Epsiode 128 - Invasions - The Hawk of Achill

E

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This is the last episode of this fairly long series. And we decided to end it on a caracter we met in the very first story, and one who has cropped up a couple of times since; Fintan Mac Bocera. He is known as the wise seer, and spiritual connection between man and island. He transformed to become one with every aspect of Ireland, and observe it from every point of view. He has seen all of the people come to Ireland, and he has watched from the eyes of a boar, a stag, a salmon and even a bird. But now he meets the hawk of Achill again, and they share their desire to rest. This is a tale with a very definite end point… Fintan and the Hawk walk away from this world, together, never to return. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our live post-show chat that is coming out at the end of the month. Like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. Welcome back to the Invasions Series. We’re coming towards the end of this series, and today we're talking about the Sons of Mil, the last peoples to come to mythic Ireland. We’re talking about the “good” Tuatha de Dannan and how they might not be so black and white as all that; the gods and goddesses of the island and how it got its name at last; and the use of magic in Irish mythology. Just who is it that gets to be magical anyway? We’ll also be chatting about the different versions of the Battle of Tailtiu and how this might be the story of how the Otherworld was created. Episode 121 - Balor Of The Evil Eye Post Show Chats (Fixed)

E

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. Today we are talking about the Formorians… and we are not quite sure where the Formorians came from. Tory Island was their home, and the land under the sea, as their name suggests; the people from under sea - Fomóire, Modern Irish: Fomhóraigh or Fomhóire. Although the Formorians have appeared in the stories of the Mythic Cycle before, we have no clear way of knowing where exactly they came from. We have a few opinions about who they might be descended from, but nothing definitive. And Balor of the Evil Eye was one of their fearless leaders. We know he had a prophecy about him which made him think he was invincible. But at what point did he become the monster we think about when we imagine the grotesque and evil eye of his. Or was he misunderstood, like many figures in Irish Myth. We talk about the duality that often blinds us in these stories, and how looking for a clear right or wrong, a clear good and bad, is not always useful. We’d love to hear from you in case you had a different thought on the matter. Comment, below, like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. Although the Formorians have appeared in the stories of the Mythic Cycle before, we have no clear way of knowing where exactly they came from. We have a few opinions about who they might be descended from, but nothing definitive. Wherever they came from, they lived in and around Tory Island and they were fierce raiders and warriors. They did not sow. They did not farm, they seemed to survive only from taking what was not theirs. But does this make them evil? Balor was one of the 7 great Kings of the Formorian People and although he was known for his evil eye, he was not all evil. This war story brings up a lot of feelings for us, as war stories often do. About right and wrong, good and evil, and about the ways people today take inspiration from old stories. Sometimes those inspirations lead us down creative paths, but they just as often take us into destruction, exclusion, and violence. We’d love to hear from you. AUDIO FIXED - Episode 116 - Invasions - The First Battle Of Moy Tura Post Show Chats 1

*We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the first battle on the plains of Moy Tura. This one has no clear right and wrong, no good and no bad… but you can probably tell where Sorcha’s allegiance lies in this chat. The Tuath de Dannan had the power of Magic after all, and they were not afraid to use it. They landed with 300 boats, and burned a lot of them, and sent a fairly obvious sign to anyone who lived on this island that they were not leaving anytime soon. We talk about the differences between the two tribes, the fear that made the Fír Bolg incapable of seeing anything other than a threat, and the self righteousness that seemed to emanate from the Tuath de Dannan, forcing their hand to take rather than negotiate. We’d love to hear from you lot in case you had a different thought on the matter. Comment, below, like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. Episode 115 - Invasions - The First Battle Of Moy Tura

E

*We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. And when the last group landed, came with 300 ships but they found the island inhabited by the Fír Bolg. As a result of not letting them share the land, the two groups made preparations for war. The hooded crow cawed and circled the battlefield. The plain of Moy Tura, (Maghtuireadh) was where the battle would be fought, on the plain of pillars. Large stone pillars were erected for the bards and poets to watch from above, so they could record the battle below. The slick and sharp Tuath De Dannan wielding the magical artifacts from the northern islands faced the Fír Bolg in the first battle of Moy Tura. The Fír Bolg would need to get help from an ancient sage to help them even compete against these magical beings. They fought fiercely, and they would have been wiped out entirely, had it not been from Sreng, the hero that took the arm from King Nuada and faced him in single combat. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode… The next episode will be a very special “making of” as we let you in on how we structured and talked this story out. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our live post-show chat that is coming out at the end of the month. Like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. *We are moving to a weekly podcast schedule, check out instagram @candlelitales for details! Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the not so great side of the Tuatha de Dannan. They landed with 300 boats, and burned the lot of them, sending a sign to anyone who lived here that they were not leaving anytime soon. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The third group of people from the Mythic Cycles of Irish stories were the Nemedians, led by Nemed himself. His people came from somewhere in the south as well, some say it was the Caspian sea. But although he left with 30 boards with 30people in each, only one boat made the voyage to this island. Like the people before them, they met the Fomorians, dealt with their raids and torment, and had a very different kind of battle with them. We talk about greed, and the ego of this leader that lead his people to an inevitable failure. Like and subscribe to this channel to help us grow. Episode 113 - Tuatha de Danann Sreng and Bres

E

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The most famous group of people that came to Ireland are the people of the Goddess Danu. Known as “God like” or to have the powers of the Gods, this chapter of Irish Myth from the Mythic Cycles, offers us the first cast of characters we come back to again and again. Get to know the name of the father God, the Dagda, or the druid Bírog of the mountains, because these characters will reappear again and again in Irish stories. They burned their boats upon landing on the shore of the island, to show they were here to stay. These were the people who went north. We know little of their journey, or who exactly the Goddess was they took their name from, but we do know they learned magic in the northern islands, and brought back four treasures with them. With new found power, they felt entitled to the land… but the land was not empty. The Fir Bolg would have to figure out what to do with these newcomers. And to do that they sent the greatest warrior they had, Sreng. But he did not expect what awaited him when the smoke of the burning boats cleared. We will be talking about this story in more detail in the next episode. Drop us a line or ask us a question and we’ll try to get to it in our post-show chat coming out this Sunday. Episode 112 - Invasions Fír Bolg - Post Show Chats

E

Welcome back to the Invasions Series. Today we're talking about the Fir Bolg, and their courage and endurance. This series is all about the oldest stories of Ireland, and the people who came to this land from afar over thousands of years. The fourth group of people to come to Ireland were the Fir Bolg, descendants of Nemed who were oppressed and enslaved for hundreds of years, keeping their faith alive by telling stories of a promised homeland. We saw a modern resonance in the desperation of people who cross the Meditteranean in makeshift boats in search of a better life, and talk about the Fir Bolg’s division of Ireland into its five provinces. Episode 99 - Oisín and Saint Patrick - Post Show Chats

E

You might hear mention this time of year of the man who saved the Pagan Irish and brought them the Good News. But not all of the Pagan Irish were happy about that. The ancient warriors of Ireland had their own code. A code of generosity, hospitality, and courage. In other words, they were terrible sinners. This is our chat about that conversation. We look back and talk about who Oisín was and the story we all know of him (at least here in Ireland) The story of Oisin and Tír na Nóg - if you don’t know that we tell it in episode 9 https://open.spotify.com/episode/4qwRuro9Di55bc17yq5fLN?si=dfYHgEqCSqmrw6VfGj63Ag When this warrior poet, Oisín, met a slave-turned-monk, known as St.Patrick, they talked. Their discussion was about gods and heroes, about the nature of truth, about how Patrick went toe-to-toe with the Devil herself, and, how Oisín proved his word once and for all. Episode 95 - Brendan the Navigator

E

We are starting a month of Voyage Tales - and the first one up is Brendan the Navigator, also known as the Voyage of Brendan. This brings us to a timeline after the fae and the magical god like people of Ireland, when a new belief was in the land. Brandan was spiritual and keen to help his fellow man. He made a name for himself throughout the many voyages he undertook, across the British isles and many more far flung places. His journey to the Blessed Land is one that comes up in European texts, and yet the details of it are often different. Was there an island of demons throwing hell fire, did he see an island of sheep, and dogs, and did he ever really land on the Ameria’s? We never let truth stand in the way of a good story all the same. Episode 93 - Cnoc Áine

E

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. This episode is the last in this month’s series of Goddess Stories. And it is a tough one. Trigger warning, this story contains subject matter of a sexual nature and rape that some listeners may find distressing. Cnoc Aine is all about the goddess that is based in Limerick. She was a goddess of light. A goddess of the sun, and the moon. She was known for her bright red hair, and ‘Aine’ means bright after all. Her feast day is the weekend after Lughnasadh, the harvest festival of the summer. You could pray to her for love, abundance, and vergence when mistreated. Her story is one of resilience and strength, as much as it is about love and kindness. Although there are many fragments to her story, this is the one that made her famous in Munster. The mother of a line of Kings that sat on the throne of Cashel for over 2000 years. But it is a dark tale and one that requires some strength to listen to and comprehend. We will chat about this story and the rest of the Goddess series live online with Melanie Lynch, the founder of Herstory - a festival all about bringing backstories of famous women in mythology and history. Join us on our Livestream - subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified when we go live: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXuDa-dzAfaAX3Yu04vw17A This version is heavily based on the legendary story attributed to Cormac mac Culennain, king bishop of Cashel (d.908), published in the Leabhar Laignech c. 12th century AD explains this tale. https://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends/aine-radiant-celtic-goddess-love-summer-and-sovereignty-007097 There is also some great info here and some brilliant recorded footage thats certainly worth checking out: https://voicesfromthedawn.com/knock-aine/ More info about Herstory can be found here: https://www.herstory.ie/home Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 92 - Sadhbh's Story - Post Show Chat

E

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. This episode is the post show chat about the previous, pretty dark tale. Trigger warning, this story contains subject matter of abuse and even psychological torture… but then most good myths have something pretty dark just under the surface. We chat about how much better a story is when you shine light on the full aspect. Aron told the story of Fionn meeting Sadhbh way back in episode 14 but, this time Sorcha tells a reimagining of the story from Sadhbh’s perspective. In the Fianna Fionn Mac Coole was the great leader, but there is an old Irish proverb that says “a man is a man when his woman is a woman”. And though we usually know the story of Sadhbh from Fionn’s perspective, this cuts out an entire chunk of the action. Sorcha delves deeper into the mind of a woman tormented by an evil druid, unable to take no for an answer. Cruelly cursed, her only reprieve is the short lived love she finds with Fionn, which leaves her pregnant. But all too soon she is whisked away to the other world, and her torment resumes. She gave birth to Oísin - but that is all we know of her. Is she still in the otherworld? Did she ever get away from her tormentor? How can someone sustain themselves living like that? Episode 90 - Tonn Cliodhna - Post Show Chats

E

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. This episode is a conversation about the last episode and about the largely forgotten Goddess Clionadh. She is known to some as the Patron Goddess of Cork (so the draw for Aron was an obvious one). She is also known as the Queen of the Banshee, and people in Glandore (Near Rosscarbery in west Cork) will know the expression ‘tonn Clionadh’ well; the wave of Clionadh. The story is unusual as she is one of the few eternal living ones that came to Ireland for the love of a mortal man. But for reasons we do not fully understand, he was taken away from her, and she was taken away from Ireland after a huge wave, the 9th of a series, dragged her away from Glandore beach. She is said to have drowned that day… but like all eternal living ones, an essence of her remained. And if you visit the Blarney in Cork, you may want to kiss a stone to seek the skills of the eloquence of speech, or what's locally known as “the gift of the gab”. You may not know, it was Clionadh we have to thank for that! Episode 88 - A Goddess Story - Post Show Chats

E

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. This episode we are talking (and arguing) about the ambiguities of Irish Mythology. Sorcha once said that working with “Irish Myth is like painting in water”... that may be a quote from somewhere else, but I like it (and I just heard my sister say it so I think it’s fair to just quote her?). We’re talking about the Goddess Danu, and the Goddess stories that were lost. The devastation this has on our culture, by forgetting a good half of it and keeping the female voice quiet for so long. We talk about what else was lost, and amongst other things, how to go about remembering something you were never told. More and more is forgotten about our old customs, language, and beliefs. And when you look for 'Danu' now, you might only find a line in the 12th-century book, An Leabhar Gabhala (the book of Invasions) that says "she is the Mother Goddess". If her stories were wiped out on purpose, then we have to try and stitch them back and re-knit the fabric of our lost traditions. Although Sorcha mentioned 3 names for Ireland in her story; Banba, Fódhla, Éiru, there are some who say there are many more, and as many as 14 according to Mark Joyce in his recent book “Mythical Irish Wonders”. Episode 87 - A Goddess Story

E

This month we are celebrating the Goddess Brigid and her feast day of Imbolc by releasing a month filled with Goddess stories. The first is one of the most ambiguous ones… as there are no written sources to find much about the Goddess who gave her name to the people we know as the Tuath de Dannan - the people of the Goddess Danu. Those that later became known as the “sidh”, the “good people”, and as time went by the “faeries”. In this episode, Sorcha relates what she does know about this mother goddess. And like the rivers and waters that took her name, all things flow from her. We pay tribute to the mother of all the Gods and Goddesses and when we praise any Goddess, and we pay homage to her memory. We will not forget their names. Episode 85 - The Champion's Portion

E

Part-two of this two-part story ends with this episode, ‘The Champions Portion’. Although one of the most famous heroes of Irish Myth, Cúchulainn was not always granted the title of Ulsters Champion. To be a champion of the people took more than sheer strength and brilliance, you had to be the champion of the people, loyal and true to your word in every way. Cúchulainn’s championship is contested by his fierce cousin Conal Cearnach, the Battle Winer, and the well-meaning, (but often in the way) Lóegaire Búadach, the victorious. These two champions think they ought to be names the champion of Ulster. Despite failing miserably at overcoming Cúchulainn in any of the series of tests that they face to come up with a winner, the two men stay stubbornly defiant. Until the intervention of a tall dark stranger, and the beheading test... Support for this podcast comes from our patrons. Episode 84 - Bricrius Feast - Post Show Chats

E

This post show chat was recorded in early January while Aron and Srocha were still in a bubble after being home in Cork for the Holidays. We missed the feastivities but enjoyed looking back over this great story full of feasts and the glorious fighting. The first part this two parter episode this deals with Bichru of the Bitter tongue, and his attempt to host a feast. This section of the story is also known as ‘Bichru’s Feast’ in Richard Marsh's book 'Irish King and Hero Tales'. As his title suggests he is a troublemaker and prefers to cause strife amongst his friends and kinsmen than enjoy their company modestly. After all, he can take no enjoyment from food, of sex, or even drink… so he has to amuse himself somehow. After inviting all the heroes of the Crebh Rua to his feasting hall, he has a few tricks up his sleeve to ensure this will be a memorable night. He has to be one of our favorite tricksters in Irish Myth, but he might have bitten off more than he can chew in this episode… Next week we will hear the end of the ‘Champions Portion’ and find out who is the rightful champion of Ulster.
