Episode 178 - Samhain Chats
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series of Samhain Stories. It is the time for spooky folk tales, and we are telling a few new ones that we have not told before. ‘Tis the season for spooky folktales, and in this series, we will tell you more of our favourites. Strange things happen across this land around this time of year, and oftentimes they make great stories as a result. This episode is a look forward to what we will be covering over the next few episodes and where we found the stories. Because we are quite busy with the Púca Festival again this year, the festival that celebrates Halloween as an Irish holiday wants to give you a few insights into who and what the Púca was. Púca quite simply means ghost or spirit in Irish, and there are definitely a few story variations to what exactly the Púca was. So we will chat about that, and the other two stories we decided to share with you at this time of year. The origin of the Vampire story and the tale of the Black cat. We also chat about what’s coming up for us in love shows and we will be sharing more info about what we’re doing on our social media channels. If you have any questions, do get in touch. Episode 176 - Mythic Places - Sliabh Mis - Scotia
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. In this series, we’re taking a look at some of the most iconic locations in Ireland, and the stories and myths attached to them. In this episode, we take a closer look at the Sliabh Mis mountains in Kerry. There is a burial site in the hills, where the daughter of a Phero of Egypt is buried. The story goes, that a group of exiles from Egypt came across Europe and found their way to the South of Ireland. Linked in with the Milleasion myth, the group of people who fought the Tuath de Dannan and defeated them to rule Ireland. Scotia was their beloved princess and she died in the battle. You may still find traces in Glenn Scotia, very near present-day Tralee, where the Egyptian princess is believed to be buried. The same people are believed to have travelled from Ireland to Hill Hilled Alba, and the country got the name Scotland from princess Scotia… apparently. Episode 172 - Mythic Places - Loop Head - The Cailleach
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. In this series, we’re taking a look at some of the most iconic locations in Ireland, and the stories and myths attached to them. This episode we are talking about the Cailleach again. The Cailleach Beara offered her love, and her longing to the youthful CuChulainn. If you go to the lighthouse at Loop Head in County Clare, you will see a stone stack off to the side of the cliff. It’s known to be the location where the Cailleach leapt after Cuchulainn, who was running away from her and fell to her death. The Story might hold more significance than you might first perceive. The King Nial of the Nine Hostages lay down with the Cailleach. The King had no problem being mature enough to see past her features and see her inner beauty. Could this mean more for the young boy warrior? The Greatest warrior of all time, Cuchulainn… was also a boy that never matured. And he certainly never slept with the Ceailleach. Episode 170 - Mythic Places - - Three Bad Bitches - Post Show Chats
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. In this series, we’re taking a look at some of the most iconic locations in Ireland, and the stories and myths attached to them. In this episode we have a special guest, Julie Lockey, to talk about the last three episodes, and the three bad bitches that appeared in them. From the Revenge of Sín, Becuma, and the one and only Macha aka the Morrigan aka the Goddess of Battle Rage… I think we have a trio of pretty awesome powerhouses. Ironically when these stories were written down these ladies were often portrayed as the villain or evil wrongdoers in the tale. Now in the age of the Anti-Hero and the female archetype is allowed to rise in all its glory, we have a look at the good the bad and the ugly side of these three stories. Episode 167 - Post Show Chats Mythic Places Giants Causeway & Blarney
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and back to this Series. This series is about the mythic places all over Ireland. And in this episode, we are chatting about the first two episodes, The Giants Causeway and Blarney. Aron and Sorcha are in the “shoffice” again chatting about the beauty of these places, and the stories that go along with two of Ireland's most iconic and sought-after places. We were a bit giddy in this episode, but bear with us, we think we made some good points! We talk about the difficulty in telling a story that is linked with history and honouring the place, which Sorcha found tricky to contend with for the Blarney episode, contrasted to Aron’s story of the Giants Causeway which we have both told numerous times. We love to hear from you, so do let us know what thoughts you’ve had and as always, thanks for listening. In this episode, Aron tells us the story of ‘The Revenge of Sín’, a story based in Tara. There are many tales about Tara, where the High King of Ireland ruled from. We chose this because it shows a connection to the land that is not in all the stories. The well being of the land would reflect how the King was the rightful ruler. If the land was sick or there was a plague, it was thought to be the fault of the ruler. This story shows the two sides of that coin, and it has at its centre a woman of the Sídh that caused havoc when she took the throne next to Conn Cead Cathach. If you know a place with an interesting tale, drop us a line and let us know and it could be featured in one of our Mythic Places stories! We found a version we really liked in a book called ‘Legendary Ireland’ by Eithne Massey. Episode 158 - Rebirth - Oisín And Patrick
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. For the month of March, we are sharing stories of our island’s patron Saint. And one of the best stories of Patrick is the story of his strange friendship with an odd old man, who claimed to be a hero of legend. After the fall of the Fianna, Oisín, son of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, lived in the land of eternal youth, heedless of the centuries slipping by. When he came back to Ireland to visit his father, he found a place changed beyond recognition, and when time caught up with him, he was brought to the wisest man in Ireland at that time: Patrick, the prophet of a new faith. This is the story of what happened next. This story is told by Aron in a special live recording, with live musical accompaniment by Oisín Ryan. Episode 151 - Battle Rage - Post Series Chats
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and the final episode in the back Battle Rage Series. This year we decided to choose lesser known characters from the Ulster Cycle, and tell their most interesting stories. You might recognise the characters in this series from the Táin saga. These stories stand alone, linked by one connection: the different manifestations of their Battle Rage. In this episode Aron, Sorcha and Oisin talk about the stories in the second half the series. As a reminder these were, Findchoem, Emer, Finibhear, and the Morrigan. We chat about how 1st person storytelling has been different to our usual style, and how much we have liked it, as well as the music and style of atmosphere Oisin created for this series. We briefly mentioned workshops and ‘Cruthu’, the interactive game based show that we got Arts Council funding for. So if you are curious about any of the storytelling workshops that we offer, please get in touch, or check out our website http://candellittales.ie. Episode 141 - Patreon Appreciation Special Edition
EThis podcast was brought to you by our Patreon supporters. We say it every week, but it’s not just a slogan. This was brought into stark focus for us last week as the equipment purchased by Patreon donations decided to spontaneously and simultaneously go on strike! So with the podcast delayed, Aron and Sorcha jumped on a call to thank our Patreon patrons profusely, call them all our by name, and catch up on what we’ve been up to. And have been up to quite a lot too! So we hope you enjoy hearing about the finale of our most recent Storytelling Course (drop us a line if you're interested in the next one). Sorcha fills Aron in on the Brehon Law workshop that she recently facilitated, through Herstory and with the help of Wicklow County Council. Aron had a chance to review the performances in Ireland's ancient sites, including Emain Macha and Uisneach. Episode 140 - The Battle Rage - Pre Show Chats
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and to the first episode of our last series of 2021. In this episode we got together and talked out the plan we have in store for the Battle Rage Series. Each year for the past seven years we have always told the Táin Bó Cuailnge, or a variation of it. We have several iterations of this Irish epic recorded in previous podcasts. So this year we decided to choose lesser known characters from the Ulster Cycle, and tell their most interesting stories. These characters you might recognise from the saga, if you know it, but even if you don't, the stories stand alone and are linked by one connection: when each of these characters feels the battle rage come upon them. Stay tuned to hear stories from the whole team this series. Episode 139 - Samhain Eve Special - Post Show Chats with Anthony Murphy
ESamhain Eve Special! Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and the last episode of our Superstitions Series. We had the pleasure of talking with Anthony Murphy from Mythical Ireland about the last three stories, and we hope you enjoy our conversation even half as much as we did. In this episode we talk to Anthony about the wider connotations folklore and beliefs have in Irish culture; the links to older mythologies, the power, and prevalence of the church and the effect colonisation had on the minds of the people in Ireland, apart from the subjection and eradication of the Irish language. There was so much to talk about and uppack, and each time we felt like we only scratched the surface. Let us know what you thought of this chat, and if you are listening on ‘oiche shamhna’, Samhain’s eve, or as it’s widely now known as, on Halloween, we wish you a very happy Samhain eve, and we hope the fae have been kind enough to you this day. Mythical Ireland was established in March of the year 2000 by journalist, author, and researcher Anthony Murphy. Episode 137 - Samhain Superstitions - The Burning of Bridget Cleary
E******* Part of our 2021 Samhain Superstitions Series The infamous story of the murder of Brigid Cleary became well known as the last witch burning of the nineteenth century. The world turned it’s gaze at Ireland in 1895, when Michael Cleary was found guilty of manslaughter after burning his own wife to death. The only reason he wasnt charged with murder was because the court found he truely believed he was killing a changling. Superstitions about changelings were strong, so strong in fact that Michael had his father in law, and his brothers in law convinced that the woman in front of them was not the real Brigid. A changeling was an unwanted faerie, and one that was swapped with the person in question. They were taken far away and underhill to be with the fae, while the unwanted faerie (often a child) was left behind and transformed it’s image to that of the stolled person or child. This episode is an attempt to gain an insight into how those superstitions must have festered and driven a man to the point of murdering his own wife. We will talk about this episode and the following one on the Banshee, on Sunday the 31st in our special post show chats with Anthony Murphy of Mythical Irealnd. Episode 136 - Samhain Supersitions - The Little Man
EPart of our 2021 Samhain Superstitions Series This is a story of the Good Folk and their ways. When we think of the fairies, we might think of the leprechauns, hiding pots of gold with a twinkle in their eyes. We might think of funny little rascals, playing harmless pranks and tricks. We don’t often think of them the way we used to, back when they were feared. The Good People are so called so as not to insult them. Their powers are great, and their magic is potent, but there are ways to thwart them. Episode 135 - Echoes - Post Show For Episode 132
EWelcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast, and to the post show chat episodes about our collaboration with ‘The Embers Collective’, and we will hear from Lonan Jenkins, Oisin Ryan as they compare notes about the stories they shared. If you missed episode 132 of this series, have a listen before this episode to avoid spoilers, or after if you prefer. The next two episodes will be more post show chats about the previous stories in this series. For now, Lonan Jenkins tells us what inspired him to remaster the ending of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and what the story as a whole means to him. Oisin also explains what themes he tried to echo in the story of ‘Capturing Bláthnát’, while Aron offers his own observations and questions between the two. If you enjoyed this conversation or thought of something we didn’t mention, please let us know. For this new series, ‘Echoes’, we have teamed up with London-based Storytelling Company ‘The Embers Collective’, who tell global folktales and myths set to live music. They gave us three stories, and we found the Irish equivalent. We chose stories that we thought ‘echoed’ something intrinsic in these stories, and while not always obvious at first, we hope you agree there is a subtle level of repetition in these stories. When any story is told, you can hear others echo in its re-telling. We often get messages about how the great warrior Cuchulainn reminds people of the hero Achilles. How Fionn is our Odin, or Manannan Mac Lir our version of Poseidon or Neptune. And when you look at any of the great stories, you will often find a familiar aspect echoed in other mythologies. Similar structures are used or similar events are described. Sometimes it can even be as blatant as the exact same plot points are used with different names. So we decided to record a few of these for this podcast. The next two episodes will be more post show chats about the previous stories in this series. For now, Sarah Lisa tells us about what her creepy, (yet devilishly told) story of ‘The Devil's Violin’ means to her. Ru also explains what themes he tried to echo in the story of ‘The Kings Harp’, while Sorcha offers her own observations and questions between the two.
