Cesaire - (Re-release)

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast. This is an old story. A story that tells Irish people where we come from. In a time where the world seems dark, and a lot of hate is being thrown around. We felt it was important to look back at our oldest stores. To release an old story. To reflect on its message. A message of unity. A short reminder that we all come from the same source, and we in Ireland are all visitors to this land. The land will remember our actions, and remain long after our lives are lived out on it. Please note the content of these stories may be triggering for some listeners, please take care of yourself as you listen. This podcast contains mentions of blood, mutilation, violence, and death.

Episode 210 - Mythic Places - Waterways - Gougane Barra & the River Lee

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, and this series on Waterways. In this episode, Aron tells us the origin of the River Lee. There are scant enough details about the event, but Saint Finnbarr is claimed to have settled a monastery on the island in the middle of the lake of Gougane Barra. The Rock of Barra. Was there already a standing stone there, a rock of limestone from the cliffs that surround the lake in the mountains there? Or did this saint settle his chappel on a rock he found and named? Either way, the place has his name to this day. Legend has it, St. Finnbarr defeated the serpent Lua or Lú which lived in the dark depths of the lake. Upon being banished the serpent tore through the landscape, carving a trail for the water from the lake to flow all the way to the marsh mouth of the river Lee where it meets the sea. Episode 209 - Mythic Places - Waterways - How The River Delvin Got Its Name

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, and this series on Waterways. This is the story of how the River Delvin got its name. The River Delvin is a small but significant river that runs the border between Co. Dublin and Co. Meath. Rúad was the son of a King in the East of Ireland. The people of Magh Muirigh or Moymurthy were his father's people, and he decided to leave one day to go north to visit his foster brother in Norway. Things didn’t work out the way he had planned, and he spent seven years away from Ireland after a fairly enjoyable meeting with some ferocious female fae. Unfortunately for Rúad, he broke his promise to them and suffered the consequences. But interestingly, the name of the river came from the refrain that all the people called out when they saw what had happened. The source of this story, or set of stories tied together, was inspired by the translation of “How the River Nanny and Delvin got their Names” from the book ‘Meath Folk Tales’ by Richard Marsh. Episode 206 - Mythic Places - Waterways - Lough Sheelin - Lake Of The Fairie Pool

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, and this series on Waterways. This is the story of Lough Sheelin, the lake of the fairie pool. This is more closely linked to folk tales and the folk beliefs that surround the mysterious lake in Co. Cavan. At the North Eastern tip of the waterways that connect to the River Shannon, this lake has a number of tales of merpeople under the lake, or houses spotted under the surface. Our protagonist is known only as the student, and he was sick and tiered of hearing these superstitious stories his father would frequently. Unfortunately for the student, he had attracted the attention of one of the merpeople, and that's not often a good thing. The source of this story, stories tied together as one, was inspired by two stories of “Loch Síodh Linn” from the book ‘Meath Folk Tales’ by Richard Marsh. Episode 204 Aindrias De Staic Mis And Dubh Ris

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, where we are pausing in our current series to bring you a special guest podcast. We were delighted to collaborate with Aindrias de Staic on our latest tour, performing a live show with him in The Pavillion, Lisdoonvarna. Aindrias is a storyteller and musician who performs in Irish and English. He’s a fiddle player and seanachaí from the west coast of Ireland and has been performing for over two decades. Aron first saw Aindrias at a festival where he was playing with the Lachichos, a three-piece band that blends great tunes, with romping stories and folktales of Aindrias’s creation. We have performed together only once before, in Dublin in 2019 but that was without Sorcha. So this was the first time the three of us told stories together, and we were accompanied by Alan Homan on guitar as Aindrias opened the night and played along with Alan as he listened to us tell the Battle of Ventry. We gave him the story of Mis and Dub Ris and he gave us a lovely Bealtaine story to tell again. We caught up on the last episode, and for this episode, we had the pleasure of playing some tunes and hearing him tell us this story. You can find Aindrias online at www.aindrias.com and on Instagram @smalltownsheanachai This podcast is proudly sponsored by the people who donate to us each month via https://www.patreon.com/candlelittales and anyone who sends us a once-off donation through the Paypal button on our website http://candlelittales.ie/ Please note the content of these stories may be triggering for some listeners, please take care of yourself as you listen. #candlelittales t#candlelittalespodcast #keepherlit #keephercandlelit #storytelling #livemusic #mythology #irishmythology #patreon #thankyou #subscribe #youtube #spotify #amazon https://www.youtube.com/c/CandlelitTales https://open.spotify.com/show/2102WuUUe9Jl6cGXNwQEKf https://soundcloud.com/candlelittales https://twitter.com/candlelit_tales?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/candlelittales https://www.instagram.com/candlelittales https://vimeo.com/user52850249 https://music.amazon.co.uk/podcasts/00d5c29b-ee1a-4078-aacf-62e1a94522dc/candlelit-tales-irish-mythology-podcast

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, where we are pausing in our current series to bring you a special podcast in honour of Bealtaine Six months away from Samhain, Bealtaine was almost as important to our ancestors. A time when the veil was thin, and both ancestors and spirits could cross over. Episode 199 - Mythic Places - Waterways - Mag Mel The Voyage Of Bran

E

In this episode, |Aron tells the story of the Voyage of Bran. The mythic King who sailed off to follow the Mag Mel, the plain of honey that lead him to the other world. After hearing enchanting music, which, lulled him into a deep and restful sleep, Bran met a woman from the other world and she invited him to join her in the land of Promise. With the promise of no pain, suffering or death in a land surrounded by feasts and music, joy and laughter, Bran was eager to set off to experience the joys of the otherworld. Upon meeting Mannanon Mac Lir he was reminded how easy it is to perceive the magic of this world in the mundane and ordinary sights around. And in doing so, Bran was transported to the many coloured lands. Before we get to the 200th episode we are telling this story because it is the first story we worked on as a staged retelling back in 2013/14. We will reflect on this story, what it means to have, what John Moriarty calls the “silver branch perspective” and what it has been like to tell 200 stories on our podcast. Episode 196 - Mythic Places - Waterways - Caortanach And St Patrick 2023

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. This month, we’re getting back to the Mythic Places of Ireland, and the stories they’re connected to, with a new series on waterways. This is the story that links into this time of year, a story we’ve told a few times before in a few different ways, and which has the origin of the Shannon and an alternative to the naming of Lough Derg in it too. So it certainly ties into our waterways collection this year. Caorthannach is known as the mother of the devil himself, and the mother of all of the demons and spirits of Ireland. This is also the story of St. Patrick lighting the fires on Crough Patrick to ward off all the snakes and demons of Ireland and in one quick and remarkable way convince the entire island to put their faith in him and the new religion. But we focus a little more on the demon side in this telling as Aron gets into character… Head over to YouTube to see the video of this telling done in studio with thanks to Dublin City Council. Episode 195 - Mythic Places - Waterways - Lough Derg

E

Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. This month we’re telling stories of the Mythic Places of Ireland and its many waterways. This one of a number of stories about how Lough Derg, on the Shannon, got its name. They all seem to come back to blood, one way or another. The poet Aithirne demanded high prices for all his performances, and liked to try to stir up trouble by asking for something he knew would be refused. He once insulted a river so badly that it might have to be another part of this series! Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales Podcast. Today is the first day of Spring, Imbolg, also known as Brigid’s Day. This is a story that Sorcha has been working on for some time, in honour of the Goddess-turned-Saint. We were going to release this as a two-part episode, but have decided to let the whole thing out on the day that’s in it. For the first time on this podcast, this story will be unaccompanied by an original musical score. Oisín felt that the story stood stronger without any embellishment, and Sorcha trusts his judgement.
