Biggest questions as Buckeyes wrap up spring ball

Ohio State has its final practices of spring football this week, culminating with the spring game on Saturday. On today's show, Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to take a close look at the biggest questions facing the Buckeyes this season. Is Justin Fields definitely the guy at quarterback? What is the confidence level in the offensive line? Will the wide receivers be explosive enough? Will the defense be a strength this year after being a weakness in 2018? Why or why not? Who will be the starting linebackers? And will the Buckeyes do a lot of rotating with their LBs like they do on their defensive line? Concerns about Buckeyes' recruiting? Spring practice insights

Thank God it's Friday and thank goodness Jonah Booker is here for his usual end-of-the-work-week visit. JBook joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss the following: * What are thoughts on Ohio State's 2020 class thus far? Should OSU fans be concerned that there are seven commits in the class, but zero on the defensive side of the ball? Or is that to be expected due to having four new defensive coaches, and due to the heavy focus on landing offensive linemen? * What has stood out about the Buckeyes' spring practices on the defensive side of the ball? Who are players that are making a move? * Same deal for the offense: Who has stepped up the most? What do we make of the quarterback situation with Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin? * It is a big day of football coverage on Bucknuts as Ohio State's entire practice is open to the media this morning. Bucknuts Morning 5: March 15, 2019

When Ryan Day arrived at Ohio State in January of 2017 as the Buckeyes' co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, he was overshadowed by the hiring of offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Kevin Wilson. Almost everyone -- certainly including us here at Bucknuts -- thought Wilson was the one who was going to bring the offense to new heights in Columbus. After all, it was Wilson who was relatively successful as the head coach at Indiana (and always fielded good/great offenses at IU) and it was Wilson who had a history of being a standout offensive coordinator at the college level at Oklahoma and Northwestern. Yet, in the span of one year, it was Day who was turning down an opportunity to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans. It was Day who was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018. And it was Day who became just the second assistant coach ever at Ohio State to make a salary in the seven-digits (joining Greg Schiano). Then when Urban Meyer was suspended, it was Day who took over the program during preseason camp and for the first three games of the 2018 season. Then when Meyer retired after the 2018 season, Ohio State was so impressed with Day that they didn't even do a search for a new head coach. The Buckeyes promoted Day to head coach, and the early returns on the recruiting front and just how he handles his business in general have been positive. On today's show, Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss the quick rise of Ryan Day, plus: * How Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin look so far at quarterback. * Thoughts on OSU's 2019 wide receivers. * Ohio State's basketball team defeating Indiana on Thursday and advancing to face Michigan State today in the Big Ten Tournament. Bucknuts Morning 5: February 27, 2019

It is an action-packed show as The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the following: * Ohio State's men's basketball game with a crucial 90-70 victory over Iowa Tuesday night in Columbus, which will be remembered as the coming-out-party for Justin Ahrens. The freshman sharp-shooter exploded for 29 points for the Buckeyes. He had scored just 38 all season entering play. * By every metric available, the Buckeyes (18-10, 8-9 Big Ten) are projected to make the NCAA Tournament. * On the football front, what will Jonah Jackson's role be? Will the Rutgers transfer definitely start at guard, or might he compete with Josh Myers for the starting center spot? He will be a starter at one position or the other, but which will it be? * Even after landing Jackson, Ohio State might not be done on the offensive lineman grad transfer market. Parker Braun from Georgia Tech is interested in OSU, and his father told our Bill Kurelic that Braun will visit Ohio State in March. And if he picks Ohio State, the plan might be to redshirt in 2019 and then play as a fifth-year senior in 2020. What a unique situation, and we talk all about it. * Ohio State redshirt freshman offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere has already gained 16 pounds since enrolling (272 to 288). Bucknuts Morning 5: February 26, 2019

The haters were certain Ohio State's ability to attract talent would wane with Urban Meyer's exit. But you know haters. They're not reliable. Too emotional. What is reliable? Ohio State's ability to attract talent. Still. Despite similar overtures from Oklahoma and Texas, coveted Rutgers transfer offensive lineman Jonah Jackson chose Ohio State yesterday. It's a huge addition to an offensive line in need of quality depth. Jackson is expected to be a plug-and-play starter. What will the front five look like come August 31 when Florida Atlantic comes to town? Who better to opine than our very own Duane Long, who knows a thing or two about the big dudes. We go into depth on Jackson's transfer to Ohio State, preview the NFL Combine starting tomorrow at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and more! Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! Running back Darvon Hubbard decommitted from Ohio State on Thursday -- largely because the Buckeyes had cooled on him. Ohio State still wants to sign two running backs in its 2020 recruiting class. Who might those RBs be? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit, and JBook has plenty of suggestions and insights. Also, spring practice begins for OSU a week from Monday. Yes, March 4 is when spring ball kicks off. What will JBook be looking for the most on each side of the ball? All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: February 21, 2019

The idea Ohio State recruiting fell off last season is a bit of myth. The Buckeyes finished the 2019 cycle with the nation's No. 14 class. But there's a hook. Recruiting classes gain favor for quantity. Ohio State only took 17 prospects in the class - the fewest among the top 27-ranked programs. But the the Buckeyes' average ranking per recruit was good for No. 3 nationally behind Alabama and Georgia. Still, there was angst about 'No. 14.' That angst is basically gone with the ushering in of the Class of 2020 cycle. This from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong on the effort: 'In 2020, the Buckeyes should be back where everyone is used to seeing them in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, competing for the nation’s No. 1 class. OSU is currently No. 5, led by two of the country’s best offensive linemen in top-ranked offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and top-ranked center Luke Wypler. Quarterback commit Jack Miller was one of the more coveted signal-callers in this class and he has two talented wide outs to go to work with in Top247 recruit Gee Scott Jr. and one of the Lone Star State’s best in Jaxon Smith-Njigba who had 1,819 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns including 267 and three in a state playoff game against national powerhouse Allen.' So who better to join us today for extended recruiting chatter? Yep, Steve is here with wisdom. Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! Ohio State has three proven quality playcallers on the offensive side of the ball. They include head coach Ryan Day, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, and first-year passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich. Who will be the primary playcaller out of that group? Yes, it will be a collaborative effort, but who will be making most of the calls? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that and much more on the Wednesday extravaganza. Ohio State is knee deep in the graduate transfer market for offensive linemen. Jonah Jackson took his official visit to Oklahoma over the weekend, and word is the Sooners might lead for his services. The Buckeyes are also in on R.J. Proctor and Parker Braun, but Jackson is the one they really want. Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What are thoughts on the Buckeyes' 2019 offensive line? * What should fans expect from Ohio State's 2019 defense? Could it be really good? Bank sure thinks so. All of that and more on the President's Day extravaganza. A honeymoon period? Not at Ohio State. All right, perhaps right now is the honeymoon period for new head coach Ryan Day. The time of the year when the Buckeyes won't be playing real games. But when the 2019 season arrives, expectations will be extremely high. Especially for a team that is already being picked as a top-5 squad by nearly everyone in the country. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Will defense actually be a strength for OSU this fall? * How concerned are we about the offensive line? Admit it ... you were a little but apprehensive. Even the staunchest Ryan Day supporters couldn't have known for sure what they were getting. And Day needed to hit the ground running. Taking over for a legend in a 365-day gig doesn't allow a lot of time for celebrating the now added cashflow, etc. But so far, so good. Like ... real good. Should be surprised? NCAA, you don't have to put on a red light. And they didn't. They greenlighted Justin Fields' appeal to be eligible immediately at Ohio State in 2019. What should fans expect from the quarterback as a sophomore this fall? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What is our take on him being granted immediate eligibility? A lot of people outside of OSU’s program seem have a problem with it. If this happened at Penn State, would we be bashing it? Or is this simply the new normal? * Which of Ryan Day’s new staff members that we got to meet last Wednesday impressed Helwagen the most? * On the hardwood, Ohio State topped Indiana 55-52 in Bloomington on Sunday. It was a huge win for the Buckeyes, and they now sit at 6-6 in the Big Ten, and 16-7 overall. Where do they now sit as far as their NCAA Tournament chances? We close the show with that discussion. Buckeye Nation is still awaiting word whether quarterback Justin Fields will be eligible immediately in 2019. If he is, Jonah Booker believes Ohio State will be on the short list of national championship candidates. JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual visit to discuss Fields, plus: * Thoughts on Ryan Day's coaching staff at OSU, specifically Jeff Hafley and Mike Yurcich. * What should Buckeye fans expect from 5-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson as a true freshman? * What about 5-star true frosh DE Zach Harrison? * Ohio State's men's basketball team escaping with a 74-70 win at the Schott against Penn State last night, to move to 15-7 (5-6 Big Ten) on the season.
