Defensive recruits on deck? 'Bases loaded, nobody out'
Ohio State only has one defensive commit so far in its 2020 class. However, are several defensive commits on the verge of committing to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes? Bill "Bank" Greene thinks so. Bank joins Dave Biddle for today's show and believes that the "bases are loaded with nobody out" in terms of defensive recruits for OSU. Now, Day and his staff need to bring the runners home. A deeper discussion on that is coming at you, plus: * Will the Jaheim Thomas situation impact Paris Johnson and/or Darrion Henry as it pertains to Ohio State? * What is Bank hearing about OSU's defensive coaches, specificially their recruiting acumen? All of that and more is happening on the Wednesday extravaganza. 'The' destination for quarterbacks and wide receivers
You know the names: Garrett Wilson, Jameson Williams, Gee Scott, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Julian Fleming. Then there is Justin Fields and Jack Miller. There are more names, too. But if you want quarterbacks and wide receivers, those names will do. And do well. The combination of Ryan Day and Brian Hartline (among others) on Ohio State's staff has amped QB and WR recruiting to levels not seen before. And want some more good news? There are no signs of slippage on the horizon. Join us today to discuss that, Kendall Milton, Mookie Cooper and more with the Dean of Ohio State Recruiting, our very own Bill Kurelic. The Joshua Perry Show: What it's like on day 1 for a freshman
Have you ever been curious what it is like on the first day a freshman joins a college football team? Well, you came to the right place. On today's edition of The Joshua Perry Show, the former Ohio State linebacker, national champion, captain and NFL player, explains the thoughts running through the head of an 18-year-old kid (or 16 if you're Parris Campbell) who has suddenly joined a group of grown men. Also, can players tell on day one that certain freshmen are never going to be good enough to make it at a place like Ohio State? Speaking of players enrolling, 11 members of the Buckeyes' 2019 recruiting class enrolled recently. What is Joshua hearing about that group? And just how much power does Mark Pantoni have when it comes to deciding who gets scholarship offers from OSU? All of that and more on this edition of The Joshua Perry Show. 'Another in the Buckeyes' offensive recruiting roll'
Slow your roll? Not if you are head coach Ryan Day, wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and running backs coach Tony Alford, who continue to make waves on the offensive recruiting front for Ohio State. The nation's No. 1 wide receiver recruit in the 2020 class -- Julian Fleming -- picked the Buckeyes over Penn State and Clemson on Friday. Could 5-star running back Kendall Milton be next to join OSU's 2020 class? He had his official visit to Ohio State over the weekend and it went very well. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss all of that, plus: * The rise of Brian Hartline as a coaching and recruiting superstar. * Is linebacker a concern for Ohio State in 2019? Or could it end up being a strength? * Did you know that Helwagen is a highly-requested speaker to OSU football groups/alumni groups? Well, now you do, and Steve will tell you an interesting story from his speech in St. Petersburg, Fla., this weekend. All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza. 5-star Friday | Zach Smith dishes dirt on Ed Warinner
It is 5-star Friday here on the show as the nation's No. 1 wide receiver -- Julian Fleming -- will make his announcement today, and things sound very good for Ohio State. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss Fleming perhaps becoming a Buckeye, plus: * Thoughts on 5-star running back Kendall Milton making his official visit to OSU this weekend, and where the Buckeyes stand with him. * We were already excited about Ohio State redshirt freshman running back Master Teague. Then he was recently clocked in the 4.3s in the 40, and our excitement level increased even more. * What are takeaways from Zach Smith's new podcast, Menace 2 Society? And what exactly did Smith say about his former coaching colleague at Ohio State, Ed Warinner? All of that and more on an extended, 20-minute edition of the Friday extravaganza. 'It was a seamless transition'
The No. 1 left tackle. The No. 1 center. The No. 1 wide receiver. The No. 2 quarterback. The No. 3 running back. What would happen if they all got together and committed to one school? You'd have Ohio State's Class of 2020 haul ... probably. And what would 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong say about the move from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day if the above scenario happens? Fleming to OSU? | 'Tressel should be president of this university'
It seems very likely that 5-star wide receiver Julian Fleming will select Ohio State on Friday, which would be a huge boon for the Buckeyes. Also, should Jim Tressel return to OSU as the president of the university? That and more on today's show, as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. Building foundation with Five Stars?
The top-rated wide receiver recruit in program history? The top-rated offensive line recruit in program history? Yes, we are talking Ohio State's 'possible' Class of 2020. And yes, we are being realistic. Julian Fleming, a Pennsylvania native and the nation's No. 1 receiver, will announce his commitment on Friday. Paris Johnson, a Cincinnati native and the nation's No. 1 left tackle recruit, just visited LSU but has one official visit left. How confident should we be that both will be Buckeyes? Who else to ask other than the Dean of Ohio State Recruiting ... our very own Bill Kurelic. The Dean educates all on Fleming, Johnson and a power-packed recruiting schedule for June that could set up Ohio State for some time. Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! Ranking the top defensive & offensive linemen of Urban Meyer era
Who were the top-5 offensive and defensive linemen of the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State? That is the question that Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle answer on the Friday spectacular. Putting Paris in perspective
If the "Blind Side" was being made today, Paris Johnson would likely get a call from the film's casting director. The Class of 2020 star and Cincinnati native recently transferred fro St. Xavier to Princeton so he can graduate early and is THE left tackle prototype: 6-foot-7, 290 pounds, great feet, great frame, great ... you get the picture. Instead of taking the Hollywood route, Johnson is currently verbally committed to Ohio State. But the Urban Meyer-to-Ryan Day transition meant Johnson's recruitment hit the reset button. So far, so good. 247Sports Director of Recruiting is jet-setting across the lower 48 but made some time for us to talk Johnson and much more after seeing him workout in person recently. We also go into detail on other offensive linemen that could be future Buckeyes as the recruiting trail gets heated. Prime targets headed elsewhere? Former targets coming back into focus? Ranking the top-12 football players on Ohio State's 2019 roster
Who are the top-12 players on Ohio State's football roster in 2019? That is the question The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, and Dave Biddle will answer on today's show. Who is No. 1 on the list? Where does new quarterback Justin Fields rank? We will go in reverse order 12-1, and we hope that you will include your personal top-12 in the comments section. Feel free to disagree (or agree), just make sure to feel free. A lengthy, fun edition is coming at you on the Wednesday extravaganza. Five stars in focus
Can you imagine Justin Fields handing the ball to Kendall Milton, who darts around the end courtesy of a Paris Johnson pancake block? And can you imagine it setting up some play-action love as Fields hits wide receiver Justin Fleming for six? Let your imagination run wild ... because that could become reality. All three Class of 2020 five-stars could don the Scarlet and Gray. Duane Long remains on hiatus but we bring in the Dean of Ohio State recruiting - Bill Kurelic - to offer up the latest on the 15 stars of fun those three combine for. Also: Two Ohioans earned Buckeye offers recently. Are they headed for Columbus? All of that and more is coming at you on the Tuesday extravaganza. The Joshua Perry Show: Recruiting concerns on defense?
We are back with this week's edition of The Joshua Perry Show. On today's show, the former Ohio State linebacker, national champion, captain and NFL player joins Dave Biddle to discuss the following: * The Buckeyes only have one defensive commitment in their 2020 recruiting class, exactly seven months from the early signing period in December. Is Joshua concerned? Why or why not? * Does Joshua like the early signing period? * How long does it usually take for transfers to get acclimated to their new programs? * What are thoughts on OSU's defensive tackles for the 2019 season? How good, or great, is this group? * Some former players -- like Michael Thomas -- have said that they think practices during the Urban Meyer era were more grueling than what some of them saw when they visited OSU and watched a spring practice or two this year. Thomas was somewhat joking it appears, but many fans have asked if the new coaching staff is too soft on the players. Joshua answers that question, and gives his usual unique perspective and insights. All of that and more is coming at you on The Joshua Perry Show. Past 100 days in office: How well is Ryan Day doing?
It is well past the first 100 days in office for first-year Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. He has already had a lot on his table, and on today's show, Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle for a rundown of the big things Day has done so far, and how well he is doing on those fronts. This includes the quarterbacks Day has added to the roster, the job he did putting together a coaching staff, and the job he is doing on the recruiting trail. Recruiting drought? 'It's May, relax'
What is the latest on the top prospects from Ohio in the 2020 class? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss that in great detail. And no, Bank is not worried that certain big-name recruits have not committed to OSU yet. That and more is coming at you on the Friday extravaganza. Wiltfong on Kendall Milton momentum, Irish threat up front
We've talked plenty about Ohio State's impending, historic wide receiver haul. But who will keep the safety in the box? If the Buckeyes have their way it could very well be California standout Kendall Milton. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong recently flipped his Milton Crystal Ball to 'foggy.' Why? He explains. Also: * The latest on Cincy's Darrion Henry and Paris Johnson. Can we start using ink? * Why isn't USC in the mix for Milton? * Has Notre Dame become 'O-Line U' and how is it affecting Ohio State? Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Introducing Ohio State's D-line, aka 'The Crushmen'
Ohio State's defensive line has a "Rushmen" package when the Buckeyes deploy four D-ends at the same time. However, analyzing Ohio State's defensive line as a whole, an accurate nickname might be "The Crushmen." Why? Because this group is loaded with experience and talent, and might be the deepest D-line to come through Columbus. Which, would be saying a lot considering some of the deep defensive lines we've seen from OSU over the years. The group is especially deep at defensive tackle, where a guy like Antwuan Jackson might be the seventh-best D-tackle on the squad. Yes, a former 5-star recruit who is coming off a good spring is probably behind the likes of BB Landers, Davon Hamilton, Tommy Togiai, Jashon Cornell, Taron Vincent and Haskell Garrett in the pecking order. And that's not a knock against Jackson. It is to illustrate the incredible depth of this unit. Oh, and Larry Johnson's crew is plenty deep and talented at defensive end as well, led by All-American candidate Chase Young. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle on today's show for a close look at the defensive line, plus: * What type of scheduling philosophy should Ohio State have for non-conference games? Play as tough a schedule as possible, or try and set up as many easy wins as possible? What is best for the fans? What is best for the program? * Will we be rooting for Tate Martell at Miami this year? * What are expectations for Justin Fields' first season as Ohio State's starting quarterback? Best wide receiver haul ... ever?
Ohio State has been fortunate to attract some great receivers in its storied history. Just last season, the Buckeyes added a 5-star from Texas in Garrett Wilson. So what about an encore? Oh, there is one coming alright. The Buckeyes already have commitments from Gee Scott and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. For some programs, two top 30 wide receivers would be cause for celebration. Here? Not so much. Crystal Balls are rolling in avalanche fashion for Julian Fleming to become a member of the Scarlet and Gray. Fleiming is the nation's No. 1 wide receiver. But ... what if there was even more wide receiver help on the way? It sounds almost like too much, right? Well, it's not and the Dean of Ohio State Recruiting - Bill Kurelic - is here to tell you why. Kurelic - filling in for an ailing Duane Long - also goes into detail on Mitchell Melton, Michael Carmody and how Michigan's basketball program just took a direct shot to the stones. The Joshua Perry Show: Talking schematics on both sides of ball
You wanted to hear from No. 37 on schematics, and today you are getting your wish. That's right, on today's edition of The Joshua Perry Show, the former Ohio State linebacker, national champion, captain and NFL player goes in depth on schematics. And of course he talks a lot about the defensive side of the ball and how the philosophy of Greg Mattison and Jeff Hafley will differ from that of Greg Schiano's. However, Joshua will also delve into the offensive side of the ball and explain what makes Ryan Day's offense so difficult to defend. 'Buckeyes are talented, experienced at WR' | Beilein leaves Michigan for Cavs
On today's show, Patrick Murphy and Dave Biddle take a close look at Ohio State's wide receivers entering the 2019 season. What can be expected from this group? Also on the docket: * The surprising news that John Beilein is leaving Michigan to be the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. What might this mean for OSU? * Speaking of Buckeye hoops, Chris Holtmann landed his first recruit in his 2021 class: four-star power forward Kalen Etzler, who is ranked as the No. 51 overall prospect in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. Which true freshmen will play more than four games for Ohio State in 2019? Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is a given. But who else? That is one of the topics as Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for today's show. Also on the docket: * What are reasonable expectations for Ryan Day's first season as the Buckeyes' head coach? * We discuss Zach Smith's arrest for a violation of a protective order. * Should Ohio State's football team take trips abroad like Michigan's team does? 'It's the biggest question on the Buckeyes' defense'
What is the biggest question on Ohio State's defense? Middle linebacker. At least, according to The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, who joins Dave Biddle for today's show. But Bax likely isn't alone. Almost every OSU fan would say the same thing when asked about the defense. Will the starter be Tuf Borland, Teradja Mitchell or Baron Browning? Will there be a rotation? Also on the docket: * A look at the Buckeyes' depth and projected starters on the offensive line. * Thoughts on Matthew Baldwin deciding to join TCU's program. No defense for Class of 2020?
We all knew Ryan Day wouldn't be just like Urban Meyer. But is the new boss taking things to the extreme? Yes, Day is known for his offensive wizardry. But he is aware there is another side of the ball ... right? Right? Ohio State's current Class of 2020 haul has eight members - seven on offense, one on defense. And the defensive player? He's basically and Urban Meyer holdover recruit. What gives? We delve into that and other recruiting intrigue with the Dean of Ohio State Recruiting Bill Kurelic, who steps in for the otherwise disposed Duane Long. Spend 5ish with us this a.m.! The Joshua Perry Show: Young Buckeyes who are on the rise
Who is a young, inexperienced player on each side of the ball that Ohio State fans should keep a close eye on this year? That is one of the topics of conversation on The Joshua Perry Show today. Also on the docket: * What are the Buckeyes doing during this time of the year? * Why is Mickey Marotti so good at his craft? * Will Urban Meyer coach again? All of that and more is coming at you on The Joshua Perry Show. Will Urban Meyer coach again?
You know it is the offseason when this is the main topic of conversation on the show, but let's have at it: Will Urban Meyer coach again? It seems to be a relatively hot topic not just in Buckeye circles, but among college football fans in general. Would Meyer coach at USC? Or another program? And why should you care? Because he would likely take a couple of very important men with him: Mickey Marotti (who just signed a new contract at Ohio State, but there would be ways to get out of it) and Mark Pantoni. What if Ryan Day becomes a megastar at Ohio State, and then leaves to be an NFL head coach in a few years? Could Meyer actually return to OSU to be the Buckeyes' coach one day? [This is where we remind you again it's the offseason.] Also, what are thoughts on the job Day is doing thus far? We won't really know how to grade him until the 2019 season plays out, but what do we think thus far? And what is the latest on Ohio State basketball recruiting for the 2020 class? Predicting the Buckeyes' 12-game regular-season record
What will Ohio State's 12-game regular-season record be in 2019 in Ryan Day's first full season as head coach? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle on today's show to answer that question, plus: * What are JBook's biggest concerns offensively and defensively for the Buckeyes this year? * What does he feel best about as he analyzes this roster on both sides of the ball? * JBook played college football at Ohio University, the type of school that does not make much money off its football program (some schools even lose money on football). Does JBook agree with Joshua Perry that all FBS college football players should get paid? All of that and more is coming at you on the Friday extravaganza. Is Ryan Day the new quarterback whisperer?
Ryan Day has yet to lead the Buckeyes into Ohio Stadium as the 'real' head coach. A three-game interim showing when you know the incumbent Rock Star is coming back to the stage is one thing. Now it's Day's show. This much Day has already proven beyond the shadow of a doubt: The guy can coach and RECRUIT quarterbacks. Does this give Ohio State a real advantage going forward as the recruiting scene for quarterbacks is more chaotic now than it has ever been? We bring in 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to discuss that and much more. Including: Who is really Ohio State's recruiting rival out on the trail? Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! 'Penn State fans should be grumpy about it'
Ohio State landed four-star quarterback Kyle McCord on Tuesday, and he hails from Philadelphia. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss McCord's decision to become a Buckeye. And Bax thinks Penn State fans should be salty about losing out on McCord. Did Buckeyes win QB shuffle? | Weber nails landing spot
Yes, it is technically the offseason. But this is Ohio State football. Is there really an offseason? Judging by the news generated in the last seven days since Duane Long was here on the BM5, there is nothing 'off' about it. The Buckeyes quarterback carousel has spun itself into a new rotation. Gunnar Hoak is back home after three years in Kentucky. What type of role will he have? There was also this little talent acquisition event called the NFL Draft. Think New Year's Eve in NYC meets Nashville. Nine Buckeyes were selected. Who landed in the best spot? All that and more with Duane today so spend 5ish with us! The Joshua Perry Show: Should college football players get paid?
It is a divisive topic, but one we are going to delve deep into on The Joshua Perry Show today. Should college football players get paid? And before you say, "They already get paid. They get a full-ride scholarship, plus a cost-of-attendance stipend on top of that." Yes, everyone knows that. The question is should get they paid a lot more than they currently do, considering the money that college football generates? If they did get paid a lot more, how would it work? Would starters get paid more than fourth-teamers? Would everyone get paid equally? What about the non-revenue sports? How would paying the football players be in line with Title IX regulations if you didn't pay the non-revenue athletes? Joshua and Dave Biddle have about a 24-minute discussion on the topic, so strap yourself in for a lively edition of the JP show! Gunnar Hoak upgrade over Matthew Baldwin?
Today's show is loaded as Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle. * Is Gunnar Hoak an upgrade over Matthew Baldwin? * What are thoughts on Michael Jordan leaving early for the NFL and slipping until the very late stages of the fourth round? Would Jonah Jackson have transferred to Ohio State if Jordan returned? * What is Bank's take on OSU center Josh Myers? * We're still scratching our heads over Daniel Jones being selected over Dwayne Haskins in the NFL Draft. Haskins: 'The league done messed up'
Dwayne Haskins was not in the mood to be politically correct after falling to pick No. 15 of the first round of the NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins Thursday night. Haskins' exact words were: "I'm more motivated than ever. Now I've got an even bigger chip on my shoulder. The league done messed up." And it wasn't just that Haskins slipped to the middle part of the round. It is that the New York Giants selected QB Daniel Jones from Duke at pick No. 6 instead of Haskins. Now, Giants GM Dave Gettleman might be the only person on the planet who would have done that, but he did it. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss why Haskins fell in this draft. Is there something fans don't know about, or is this just the typical paralysis by analysis that we see from the NFL? But hey, the good news is Haskins became the first Big Ten quarterback to be taken in the first round since Kerry Collins from Penn State in 1995. Haskins also became the first Ohio State QB to be taken in the first round since Art Schlichter in 1982. Furthermore, Haskins gets to play his professional ball for a team located just 14 miles from Haskins' parents' house in Potomac, Md. (The Haskins family moved from New Jersey to the D.C. area when Haskins was in 9th grade.) Also, Nick Bosa went No. 2 overall to the San Francisco 49ers. How early will Dre'Mont Jones, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Michael Jordan and perhaps others hear their names called during rounds 2-3 tonight? 'He's an animal on tape'
Colorado is known for its ski slopes and progressive laws, among other things. Offensive linemen? Not exactly the state's calling card. At least for now. Ohio State may have located a prospect that can change that. Who is it? Also: Perhaps the best linebacker in the Class of 2020 will be in Columbus for an official visit this weekend. But Mekhail Sherman is thought to be a heavy Georgia lean. Can the Buckeyes get back in front here? What are you doing July 4? You will be on Bucknuts, waiting to hear if Jutahn McClain will be a Buckeye. In fact, from what he is hearing, Fields is "the guy" at QB for the Buckeyes. Should fans be concerned about Justin Fields?
Ohio State held its spring game on Saturday, and sophomore quarterback Justin Fields was 4-of-13 passing for 131 yards with a touchdown (a 98-yarder to Ben Victor) and no interceptions. A lot of Buckeye fans seem concerned about Fields because of his completion percentage, but we're talking about 13 attempts in a glorified scrimmage. And they weren't even playing real football. They were playing touch football. Plus, Fields did look very good as a runner, and had at least one -- and perhaps two -- of his passes dropped on the afternoon. Are fans concerned for no reason? Or is there reason for consternation regarding Fields? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Thoughts on redshirt freshman QB Matthew Baldwin. * True freshman wide receiver Garrett Wilson, redshirt freshman H-back Jaelen Gill and redshirt freshman running back Master Teague had big afternoons. What can be expected of them this fall? * What else stood out about the spring game? * On the hoops front, Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes landed 7-foot center Ibrahima Diallo on Sunday. What do fans need to know about him? And is there any chance that guard/forward Ben Roderick will be a Buckeye? All of that and more is coming at you on the Monday extravaganza. It is a recruiting-themed show with Ohio State's spring game set for Saturday (noon ET, BTN). Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to go in-depth on the top prospects from Ohio and more in the 2020 class that the Buckeyes are highly interested in. What will happen with recruits such as Paris Johnson (who is verbally committed to OSU), Darrion Henry, Michael Drennen, Jaheim Thomas, DeaMonte Trayanum, Luke Lachey and others? Are they all attending the spring game tomorrow? And what is the latest on high four-star offensive tackle Michael Carmody from Pennsylvania? Is he coming to the spring game instead of visiting Penn State as originally planned? What might this mean for OSU? Who is on "commit watch" for the Buckeyes this weekend? What other prospects will be at the spring game that listeners absolutely need to know about? And yes, we talk about the spring game itself. What are we looking forward to seeing the most when the Scarlet and Gray face off against each other? It's got to be the quarterbacks, right? How much better will the defense be?
Ohio State has been known for having excellent defenses over the last two-plus decades, but 2018 was certainly an exception to that rule. The Buckeyes finished merely No. 72 in the country in total defense last season. They will unquestionably be better this year, but by how much? Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * What changes do we like about the Buckeyes' new defensive scheme? * What can fans expect as far as OSU's spring game format this Saturday? * Did you know Michigan is not having a spring game this year?
