Long view on Sparty, QBs, RBs and Bosa love
Yes, it's a good time to be a Buckeye. Is there ever a bad time? Of course not, but let's not digress this early. It's good to be a Buckeye currently because Ohio State is undefeated, among the nation's elite and coming off a recruiting weekend certain to aid future efforts. Also, a certain Buckeye took control of the national sports stage Monday night and showed his Ohio State allegiance all at once. Duane Long is here in his standard Tuesday spot to discuss: * Now a few days later, Duane puts the win over Sparty in perspective * Running back recruiting: The hell? * C.J. Stroud: Signal called? * Nick Bosa: Making Buckeyes everywhere swell with pride? Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Buckeyes cruise into first bye week
Ohio State disposed of visiting Michigan State 34-10 on Saturday and moved up to No. 3 in the AP poll. What were impressions from the game? What does it mean for the Buckeyes moving forward as they enter their first bye week of the season? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * Thoughts on a few members of OSU's offensive line, such as center Josh Myers who has turned into a mauler. * How much credit should Greg Studrawa get for the play of the O-line? * How did the big recruiting weekend go for the Buckeyes? Specifically with quarterback CJ Stroud. All of that and more is coming at you on the Monday extravaganza. Bucknuts Almost Live: Big test passed
Ohio State improved to 6-0 with a 34-10 over visiting B1G rival Michigan State on Saturday night. Stakes were high. National eyes were upon the Buckeyes. How did they really do? What did we learn about Ohio State in its stiffest test yet? It took almost an hour and three experts - Bill Kurelic, Matt Baxendell and Pat Murphy - to properly put the big W in perspective. The game analysis, reviewing the recruits in attendance and the national implications. We have it all right here. Spend some of your Sunday morning with us, 'Nutters! 'Looking for Buckeyes to roll big' | Why are some guys MIA?
The yearly battle between No. 4 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) and No. 25 Michigan State (4-1, 2-0) will happen Saturday night in Columbus, and Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to talk all about it. Also on the docket: * What is going on at right tackle for the Buckeyes? It is surprising that Nicholas Petit-Frere didn't get the call last week when Branden Bowen was hurt? Or does that just say a lot about Joshua Alabi and what he can bring to the table? * The huge recruiting weekend that is in store for OSU. * Players who we thought would be seeing more action than they are for Ohio State this year, such as Demario McCall and Jaelen Gill. * Pete Werner doubters eating crow. Huge weekend in The Shoe | 'The most pivotal recruit left'
There are recruiting weekends and there are recruiting weekends. We are about to experience one of the latter. Night game. The Shoe. A (relatively) high-profile opponent in Michigan State. The guest list is a who's who of Ohio State commitments and targets on unofficial and official visits. So we brought 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to provide as much knowledge as humanly possible. Among the prospects discussed: * Ryan Watts * Tyler Baron * C.J. Stroud * Kevontre Bradford * Jacolbe Cowan * Jack Miller * There's too many to list! We also discussed which current Buckeyes would be marketing darlings if new NCAA rules are passed and how Ohio State will fare against Michigan State in The Shoe on Saturday night. What is better about the Buckeyes than expected? Recruiting heating up
What is better about Ohio State's 2019 team than we expected? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that on today's show, plus: * What are thoughts on the Buckeyes' upcoming home night game against Michigan State? * It is a huge recruiting weekend for OSU and we talk about three 2020 recruits in particular that will be on campus: Running back Kevontre Bradford, defensive end Tyler Baron and quarterback C.J. Stroud. * How long will co-defensive coordinator/DB coach Jeff Hafley stay at Ohio State? Could he be one-and-done? We hope not. Welcome to the party, doubters | QB coming? | Sparty talk
Welcome to the party, rest of the United States (and elsewhere). Yes, the national media has come around on the Buckeyes. The first few days of this week have brought more national praise to Ohio State's program than any time since the Natty at Jerry World. Deservedly so. Ohio State has been the nation's best team so far. Duane Long is here to put it all in perspective on today's show: * Looking back at Lincoln. That went well. * More hyperbolic statements involving Chase Young, Jeffrey Okudah, Josh Myers and Garrett Wilson. * What does Duane think of defensive end Jacolbe Cowan, the defensive end Crystal Balled to Ohio State that is committing on Friday. * Huge visit this weekend: quarterback C.J. Stroud will be in from California. Duane shares his thoughts on Stroud and how he could affect Jack Miller and QB recruiting overall. * What can we expect from the Buckeyes this weekend as three TD favorites against visiting Michigan State? Is this Ohio State's best team in recent memory?
Is this the best Ohio State team in recent memory? Or is it far too soon to say that? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to talk about that, plus: * Thoughts on how Joshua Alabi played at right tackle in the Buckeyes' 48-7 win over Nebraska. * The play of OSU's fast and furious defense. * Looking ahead to the Ohio State-Michigan State game. * What is the latest on running back recruiting in the 2020 class for the Buckeyes? Bucknuts Almost Live: Hyperbole Headquarters Edition!
Wow. Seriously. Like ... wow. Ohio State went to Lincoln on Saturday night and straight embarrassed the host Huskers, 48-7. The Buckeyes showed wunderkind coach Scott Frost just how far his team is from threatening the B1G's best squad. Or is it actually the nation's best squad? You can definitely make that argument after five games ... and we will. Bill Kurelic, Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle joined me as we went all hot takey on the Buckeyes and the rest of the season. Things are very good. Spend some of your Sunday morning with us, 'Nutters! Any concerns about Nebraska, or will Buckeyes keep things rolling?
Ohio State has what is likely its first true test of the 2019 season Saturday night when it faces Nebraska. Is there a reason for concern for OSU, or will the Buckeyes continue to look like one of the elite teams in the country? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What are predictions for the OSU-Nebraska game, including a final score? * What are the Cornhuskers' strengths and weaknesses? * Could the Buckeyes see the return of some defensive linemen tomorrow night? All of that and more is coming at you on the Friday extravaganza. Commitments on the way? | Buckeye for Heisman?
Ohio State hasn't added a Class of 2020 recruit since California linebacker Kourt Williams joined the fold on July 24. Are we eight days from the next one? Defensive lineman Jacolbe Cowan will make his college decision known on October 4. The 6-foot-5, 277-pounder Cowan, from Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day, is the nation's No. 15 defensive tackle, according to the 247Sports Composite. With an offer list that boasts Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame and others, Cowan has plenty of options. He visited Columbus on September 15. Will he back for good? 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong is here with the absolute latest on Cowan's impending decision. But that's not all we have on the Class of 2020. Our Bill Greene has made a Crystal Ball pick for Ohio State to flip Cincy native Miyan Williams from Iowa State. What does Wiltfong think of that? We asked. He answered. Also: Should Ohio State be on upset alert in Lincoln on Saturday night? Could a Buckeye not named Justin Fields win the Heisman Trophy? Spend 5ish with us this a.m, 'Nutters! How much better is Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields than we expected? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss that, plus: * Thoughts on OSU's game at Nebraska Saturday night. * Isaiah Pryor entering the transfer portal. * Does this mean Josh Proctor will play more? * Is Michigan who Bax thought they were? 'This game will tell us a lot about Ohio State'
Ohio State is prepping for a true road test as the trip to Nebraska is here. Is this the trap game - see @Purdue '18, @Iowa '17 - we all fear? Duane Long is here to chat all about it. When the schedule was released this was a game that caused concern. How about now? Also: * Safety Isaiah Pryor entered the transfer portal. Surprised? Disappointed? * Ohio State has offered an in-state running back: Winton Woods standout Miyan Williams. What does think of the offer? Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! What is better about the Buckeyes than Bank expected?
Through the first four games of the season for Ohio State, what is better about the No. 5 Buckeyes than we expected? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to give his thoughts on that, plus: * Are their any major concerns about this team? * What are updates to some of the injured Buckeyes? * Nebraska hasn't looked good, but are the Cornhuskers a dangerous team in Lincoln this Saturday night? * Michigan looks dreadful in year No. 5 of the Jim Harbaugh era. * Ohio State offering in-state 2020 running back Miyan Williams. Bucknuts Almost Live: Serious national contender?
We knew that would be easy. After an early hiccup ... good gracious. Ohio State accomplished more in the second quarter than some teams do all day and coasted to a 76-5, let's meet the entire roster win over visiting Miami (Ohio). What did we learn about the Buckeyes ... if anything? How does Ohio State's playoff quest look now that we've had several looks at supposed contenders? Which recruits were at The Shoe yesterday? I gave my thoughts before being joined by Bill Kurelic and Matt Baxendell to get serious insight on recruiting and much more. Spend some of your Sunday morning with us, 'Nutters! 'Want to see the Buckeyes' killer instinct carry on'
What is there to look forward to the most during Ohio State's game against visiting Miami University on Saturday? Getting a chance to see young Buckeyes play? Well, Jonah Booker is looking forward to that, but mostly he wants to see OSU play with the killer instinct that it has shown thus far. JBook joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * What is the latest on the injury front with defensive ends Tyreke Smith and Jonathon Cooper? * How key has it been for Jashon Cornell to step up at DE? * What are predictions for Michigan-Wisconsin? * What has been the bigger pleasant surprise for the Buckeyes this season: The play of the linebacker or the offensive line? Redshirt referendum | Khakis soaked in Wisky?
Ohio State is a heavy favorite this weekend. By heavy we mean the weight of world. We can't remember the Buckeyes readying for such a lopsided matchup in the last decade. Will that stop us from discussing said impending contest? Of course not! 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong is here to discuss that but we obviously had to load up on some other topics because ... well ... the biggest question Saturday for the Buckeyes will likely be how the youngsters look in their last redshirt referendum gathering. Among those topics: * Ohio State's pursuit of Tennessee native Tyler Baron. Could the Vols chaos lead him to choosing Ohio State despite his father's employer (see: UT). * What a huge game this weekend: Wisconsin vs. The Fighting Khakis. The heat on Jimmy is high right now. A blowout loss for his squad would mean what? * Henry Gray's rollercoaster Crystal Ball ride. Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! 'Pollinating the flower' like a Champ
It is Wednesday, so it is of course time to "pollinate the flower" on the Bucknuts Morning 5. (If you have no idea what we're talking about, follow this link to get caught up on the inside joke.) The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to pollinate about: * Ohio State head coach Ryan Day's comments about quarterback Justin Fields being "light years ahead" of where he expected. * Cornerback Damon Arnette being very confident about the Buckeyes this season, going as far as to tell the media he expects OSU will win the national championship. * Bax's thoughts on redshirt freshman running back Master Teague. * Bax's expectations for the Michigan at Wisconsin game Saturday. * Oh yeah, Ohio State also has a game this Saturday. We will talk about that, too. All of that and more is coming at you on a fully-pollinated version of the Wednesday 5ish. Best Buckeyes squad since Jerry World?
Ohio State is good. Real good. But ... how good? Playoff contention has been the norm around here for years but this squad has a different flavor. Namely, a much improved defense. So ... again ... how good? Duane Long is here to help me put what we've seen so far in perspective. Six teams have emerged from the pack nationally. Where do the Buckeyes fit in? We break down the improved offensive line and also try and give you something more than a score prediction for this weekend's impending date with supremely overmatched Ohio neighbor Miami. We also discussed Ohio State's offer to IMG lineman J.C. Latham and why Duane would rather we recruit him at a different position. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! We knew they were very good; Buckeyes far better than that
Expectations were high for Ohio State entering the season. Yes, there were some question marks, but the goals among fans were still very lofty. Well, after three games, expectations for the Buckeyes have shot through the roof. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to talk about just how impressive OSU has been thus far and what we expect moving forward. * Which team is the Buckeyes' biggest threat in what is looking like a weaker-than-thought Big Ten? * Sophomore defensive end Tyreke Smith had to leave the Indiana game and was in street clothes in the second half. That was about the only bad thing for OSU in its 51-10 rout of the Hoosiers. * This is the best OSU defense since ... ??? We try and answer that difficult question. * There has been a lot of praise of Ohio State QB Justin Fields -- and rightfully so. But the offensive line and the running backs might not be getting enough publicity for their strong play. All of that and more is coming at you on the Monday extravaganza. Bucknuts Almost Live: Hoosier daddies
Three games, three wins. Ohio State hit the road for the first time this season in the Big Ten opener for the Buckeyes and Hoosiers. Talk about a rude house guest. The Buckeyes pummeled the Hoosiers, 51-10, and the performance matched the score. The improvement of the defense was on full display as the Hoosiers eve needed a trick play to cross the goal line just one time. What did we think of the Buckeyes and what do we think of the season ahead? Glad you asked. Bill Kurelic, Matt Baxendell and Patrick Murphy joined me to breakdown the win in Bloomington and what lies on the horizon for the Buckeyes. Spend a lot more than finish with us this a .m., 'Nutters! It's Friday the 13th, time to talk about OSU's scary D
It is Friday the 13th, but the only scary thing we're talking about on the 5ish is Ohio State's defense. And we mean scary from the opponent's point of view, of course. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * What else has impressed JBook the most about the Buckeyes through two games? * The strong play of Shaun Wade and Malik Harrison, among others. * Did JBook expect Justin Fields to be this far along at this point? Then we welcome in 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to spread knowledge on recruiting, what we've seen so far from the Buckeyes and what we can expect from the team as it travels to face Wiltfong's home-state Indiana Hoosiers this weekend. What is Justin Fields' best attribute?
What is Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields' best attribute? Could it be his poise? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What are thoughts on the Buckeyes' running backs thus far? * Is it time to get excited about junior linebacker Baron Browning? * What are expectations for OSU's Big Ten opener at Indiana on Saturday? * Bax always enjoys some schadenfreude at Michigan's expense. Today is no different. * The Buckeyes landed 4-star 2021 linebacker Reid Carrico on Tuesday and now have the No. 3 class in the nation in 2021. All of that and more is coming at you on the Wednesday extravaganza. Reid all about it | Two-game temperature
What a way to start a Tuesday! Today began with a commitment from top Class of 2021 linebacker Reid Carrico. The Ironton, Ohio native will be headed to Columbus, giving the Buckeyes another in-state, foundational piece to a class already showing incredible promise. Duane Long is here to offer thoughts on Carrico and what he means to the recruiting efforts for the Buckeyes going forward. Starting with: Duane picks the two running backs on Ohio State's board he would add the 2020 crew. But we also spend some time basking in the 42-0 drubbing of Cincy over the weekend. Steve joins Dave Biddle for today's show to talk about all things Buckeyes vs. Bearcats. What can you expect to see in this game? Where does OSU have the clear advantages? Where is UC strong? 'This is Cincy's Super Bowl'
Beware the Fighting Fickells. That's got to be the motto at the WHAC this week. One-time Ohio State 'interim' head coach and still great Buckeye Luke Fickell brings his Cincinnati Bearcats to Columbus this weekend. Think Fickell and Co. are geeked for the matchup? Think they've allowed themselves to think what a win over Ohio State would do for their program? Let's hope the Buckeyes stay away from narratives like that and remain focus on the task at hand: Beating a solid in-state rival on your home turf. Everybody has thoughts on the matchup ... including today's guest: 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong. Steve opines on the Cincy-OSU matchup as well as several other compelling Big Ten out-of-conference tussles scheduled for the weekend. We also get Steve's knowledge on running back recruiting and Ohio State's interest in two Georgia running backs currently committed elsewhere that have popped on the Buckeyes' recruiting radar. So much to say about the Buckeyes
We are channeling our inner Dave Matthews Band on the show today as there is So Much To Say about the Ohio State Buckeyes. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for the Friday extravaganza to discuss: * What is to make of the Buckeyes' running backs? * How much does OSU need sophomore defensive end Tyreke Smith and Tyler Friday to return? And how close are they to doing so? * What looks especially good about QB Justin Fields? What does it look like he needs to work on the most? * Was Garrett Wilson not touching the ball in the opener just an aberration? * What are in-depth thoughts on the Ohio State-Cincinnati game this Saturday? 'This team can win the national championship, but ... '
We are still basking in the glow of Ohio State's opening win and really just the return of meaningful football. Sure, it was the opener against an overmatched opponent paid to come get its tail kicked, that will not stop us from making sweeping judgements off a limited sample size. It's what we do! Duane Long is here in his usual Tuesday spot to offer up his impressions of the debut weekend: * Justin Fields and his amazing start ... yet lackluster finish. What gives? * How did the linebackers look after an offseason of consternation? * The offensive line showed signs of being dominant. How strong were the signs? * Is J.K. Dobbins going to be able to carry the load? Who can help him? * What type of challenge does Cincinnati present this weekend? Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Expectations for Justin Fields
For a 5-star recruit and one of the highest-rated players at his position - ever - there certainly are a lot of Justin Fields doubters. Why? Who knows? Why is Michigan picked by many to beat Ohio State? Who knows? But that didn't stop Duane Long and me from trying to figure out the Fields angst and get on the record with our expectations for the new quarterback.
