Buckeyes' 14 early-enrollee freshmen are incredibly impressive group
On Wednesday, the local media met with Ohio State's 14 early-enrollee freshmen for the first time. We came away incredibly impressed with this group, both on and off the field. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle for today's show to talk about many of the talented freshmen such as Paris Johnson, Julian Fleming, CJ Stroud and others. Also, what are Steve's thoughts on Mark Dantonio stepping down at Michigan State? Getting out before the avalanche hits, or was he just ready to retire? All of that and more is coming at you on the Friday 5ish. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Why Brian Hartline is nation's best at his job
Can 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong see the future? It's debatable. His Crystal Ball hit rate - 94% for the Class of 2020 cycle - leads one to believe its possible. His prediction more than nine months ago that Mark Dantonio was in his last season as Michigan State's coach advances his argument. Oh, and yesterday was National Signing Day and Brian Hartline was honored for being the absolute best recruiter going. So there is plenty to discuss. And Wiltfong is here. Let's enjoy. Not your father's signing day | Dantonio out at MSU
The first Wednesday of February used to be a national day of celebration for college football fans. Now? Well, signing day is a shell of what it used to be. That is because the real signing day is in December now. Ohio State signed 24 recruits in December and will sign just one -- Cameron Martinez -- today. Is this way better or worse? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss that question in detail. Other topics include Mark Dantonio stepping down as Michigan State's head coach, Ohio State's basketball team beating Michigan in Ann Arbor last night and more. Beautiful Bosa | Nekkid jaunt time | Martinez pens up
The Super Bowl has come and gone. National Signing Day is tomorrow. Football is gone for a while (apologies, Cardale). Let's provide some pigskin perspective. Duane Long is here to run the gamut with us. * Nick Bosa: The best player on the field in the biggest game on Earth. Strong marketing for your Buckeyes, indeed. * Mike Hall: Why he rated out as a nekkid jaunt pickup (without photo evidence of such, thankfully). * Cam Martinez: Tomorrow is your day. Our support team thanks you. * Crystal clear: The last five Crystal Ball picks for the Buckeyes and what Duane thinks of each. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! The Dean's List: Which top recruits might join Ohio State No. 1-ranked 2021 class?
Ohio State already has 10 commitments in its 2021 recruiting class, which is ranked as the No. 1 haul in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. Four-star defensive tackle Mike Hall from Streetsboro, Ohio, was the most recent prospect to join the class. Of all the top 2021 recruits still left on OSU's board, who do the Buckeyes have a good shot at landing? The Dean of Ohio State Football Recruiting, Bill Kurelic, joins Dave Biddle for an extended version of today's show to give you a primer on what to expect going forward. Coombs 'cornering' market already?
Kerry Coombs has been on the job for just a week-and-a-half. Yet, Ohio State's defensive coordinator is pounding the pavement on the recruiting trail and could wind up landing some of the top cornerbacks in the country in the 2021 class. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, including: * What's the latest with the No. 1 corner in the country for 2021, Tony Grimes? How much of a difference is Coombs making with him? * Are the Buckeyes the clear front-runners to land the No. 5 cornerback in the nation, Jakailin Johnson? * What does JBook think about four-star corner Jordan Hancock? * What will Ohio State's 2020 offense look like from a run/pass balance? Are we going to be looking at an offense much more similar to 2018? * Which three-tech defensive tackle does JBook think will step up for OSU this fall? 'It-factor' addition | Feeling 5 stars | Newest Texas target
Yes, the Class of 2020 has appeared to come to a close for the Buckeyes with Michigan star Cam Martinez on board. Technically, National Signing Day coming next week (Wednesday). Should Bucknutters actually go to work that day? It's time for a visit from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong. He recently chatted with Martinez about his decision and will share highlights. Also: * Newest (maybe the best) Texas prospect on recruiting radar? * Ohio State's recruiting class finished cycle No. 5 overall. * Two new 5-stars for the Buckeyes? It is the midpoint of the work week and The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show. On the docket: * Cameron Martinez saying he will definitely sign with the Buckeyes one week from today when the late signing period begins. * Which notable OSU recruits moved up and down on the final 247Sports rankings for the 2020 class? Hint: One of the guys who moved up is quarterback CJ Stroud, and we're quite high on his game. * Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson having a bigger role in terms of calling plays. * How will things shake out at running back for Ohio State in 2020? BM5 Extra: 247Sports Ranking Council talks Buckeye 5-stars
The final Top247 for the class of 2020 was released earlier today. Ohio State's haul now includes four 5-star commitments. The 5-star Reveal Show show, hosted by Josh Pate and featuring analysis from 247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons, featured player-by-player unveiling of the 32 final 5-star prospects in the class of 2020. That means in-depth discussion on the two you knew about and the newest 5-star Buckeyes: No. 4 Julian Fleming; No. 8 Paris Jackson, Jr.; No. 15 Jackson Smith-Njigba; No. 29 C.J. Stroud. So it back and listen to Josh and Barton go into detail on each of the Buckeyes to earn such lofty status and stick around for a list of the five prospects that fell just short of that elusive fifth star. Bank on 2021 Ohio recruits: Who do Buckeyes still want? How strong is this group compared to recent years?
It appears to be a very strong year in the state of Ohio for 2021 recruits. Ohio State has already landed verbal commitments from the three highest-ranked prospects in the state: defensive end Jack Sawyer, offensive tackle Ben Christman and wide receiver Jayden Ballard. The Buckeyes also have a commit from the No. 6 player in the state, linebacker Reid Carrico, and the No. 11 recruit in the state, safety Jaylen Johnson. Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to go in-depth on Ohio's 2021 recruits. * How does this class stack up with previous classes from Ohio? * What is the story on running back Corey Kiner (No. 5 player in the state), RB Jaylen Anderson (No. 7), DE Najee Story (No. 8), defensive tackle Mike Hall (No. 9) and safety A.J. Kirk? Do the Buckeyes want all of them? Where does OSU stand with them? All of that and more is coming at you on the Monday 5ish. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss that, plus: * Kerry Coombs is back and is already planting flags on the recruiting trail. * How will duties between Coombs and Greg Mattison be split up? * Who will likely be OSU's starting right tackle this fall: Nicholas Petit-Frere or Dawand Jones? * Is Cameron Martinez definitely going to sign with the Buckeyes two weeks from today? How good will Fields be in 2020? Closing the book on Gibbs
It is Friday and that means Jonah Booker is here for the Bucknuts Morning 5. JBook joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss the following: * Expectations for Justin Fields in 2020. * The Buckeyes only losing three early-entry players, which was the best-case scenario. * Who does JBook think will step up at running back for the 2020 Buckeyes? * Speaking of RBs, we can finally close the book on Jahmyr Gibbs as it pertains to OSU. Gibbs' official visit to Columbus this weekend has been cancelled. It appears the Buckeyes will sign just one running back, Miyan Williams, in their 2020 class. * What is JBook's take on the promotion of Corey Dennis to quarterbacks coach at Ohio State? Wiltfong on Gibbs visit, chasing nation's top corner
The offseason routine is getting rolling. This weekend, Ohio State will attempt to bolster its Class of 2020 haul when Jahmyr Gibbs visits. It's fitting the last spot in the class could go to a running back. Will the red carpet treatment convince Team Gibbs that Columbus is not really that far from Dalton, Ga.? It's Thursday so that means imported wisdom from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong. Speaking of running back, we talk about two names you will hear - a lot - during the 2021 recruiting cycle. One is a high school player. One is an NFL player. Listen and you'll get it. Then we move to the secondary. Wiltfong has Crystal Balled one standout to Ohio State and reports on the Buckeyes chase for the nation's top corner out of a familiar recruiting area. No Ducking the 2020 schedule | Zach Evans a take? | Urban pick wrong QB in 2018?
Ohio State's 2020 football schedule includes a date at Oregon on Sept. 12, which is the second week of the season. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show to discuss the 2020 slate, plus: * Where does Bax come down on the Zachary Evans debate? Is the talented running back a take for the Buckeyes if he is interested? * Is Bax optimistic about Jahmyr Gibbs' official visit to OSU this weekend? * Did Urban Meyer allow the wrong quarterback to leave after spring ball of 2018? Or did he make the right call at the time? That and more is coming at you on the Wednesday 5ish. You go, Joe! | You stay, Zach?
Joe Burrow did it. Seriously. The Ohio native completed what may have been the greatest single-season performance in college football history, leading LSU over Clemson, 42-25, in the National Championship Game. We pay tribute to the son of a former Ohio U. defensive coordinator. We also get into - what else? - recruiting with our very own Duane Long. How big is the addition of Donovan Jackson? Still waiting on Coombs | What's up with Evans?
Those pesky Tennessee Titans keep doing things like eliminating the defending Super Bowl champions and then beating the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. Which means Ohio State will have to wait at least one more week to announce the hiring of Kerry Coombs as co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach. What impact, if any, is this having on recruiting? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What is going on with the recruitment of running back Zach Evans? Are the Buckeyes heavily involved? * Anything new on the Jahmyr Gibbs front? * What are Bank's thoughts on the early signing period in college football being in late December? Should it be in late July instead? * Thoughts on tonight's national championship game. All of that and more is coming at you on an award-winning version (probably not) of the Monday 5ish. Will defensive scheme change with new co-DC?
Ohio State used an interesting defensive scheme in 2019 with three cornerbacks and one high safety. With Jeff Hafley moving on and Kerry Coombs likely to replace him, will the scheme change for the Buckeyes in 2020? Or will it remain the same? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for today's show and JBook gives his answer on that, plus: * Who will be OSU's starting defensive backs in 2020 other than Shaun Wade? * Ohio State landed high four-star offensive tackle Donovan Jackson. It looks like the 2021 class will be even better than the 2020 class for the Buckeyes. * Will the Buckeyes seal the deal with Cameron Martinez? * What is up with Billy Price with the Bengals? The rich get richer
The beat goes on ... and on. Ohio State's recruiting exploits are well documented - and for good reason. Yesterday, the Buckeyes received a commitment from the nation's No. 1 offensive guard. Out of Texas. We will let you know just how awesome that is and why it deserves some serious praise. But we also take a look at an in-state safety that committed this week in an effort to frame the Ohio State recruiting approach. Also: * C.J. Stroud: Just what is Ohio State getting in the Cali signal caller? Why kind of guy is he? What type of leader? * Paris Johnson: Still the Blind Sider we love to see? Recruiting roundup: Johnson's in; Jackson to follow? Legit shot with Gibbs?
It is a recruiting-themed show today with what is now the late signing period in college football beginning in roughly one month. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the following: * Ohio State's 2020 class has 25 commits, including 24 players who have already signed with the Buckeyes. The lone "holdout" so to speak is verbal commit Cameron Martinez. Will he be a Buckeye a month from now? Or is he looking elsewhere? * Running back Jahmyr Gibbs will make an official visit to Ohio State the weekend of Jan. 17-18. How much of a chance do the Buckeyes have of flipping Gibbs from his Georgia Tech commitment, and keeping him away from big-time southern programs such as Georgia, LSU and others? * In the 2021 class, Ohio State has the No. 1 haul in the nation at this early stage with eight commitments. The latest being three-star safety Jaylen Johnson from Cincinnati LaSalle who committed on Tuesday. * High four-star offensive tackle Donovan Jackson will make his annoucement today at his high school in Texas. The Buckeyes are expected to land him, which would make this already excellent 2021 class even better for Ryan Day and OSU. * Kerry Coombs returning to Ohio State might be the worst-kept secret in the world. Wade's return | Duane's 2021 must gets
Recruiting is the lifeblood of any quality football program. Sometimes that means attracting the nation's best prep talent to Columbus. Sometimes that means keeping them in the city. See Wade, Shaun. Ohio State was facing a 2020 season with zero experience in the secondary. With Wade's decision to return, the Buckeyes have a first-team All-American to build around. Just a bit different. Just how impactful is Wade's decision for the Buckeyes? Back to the recruiting of prep stars. The focus is shifting to the Class of 2021. Duane Long is here to share some names. These are the guys Duane is head over heels for in the class. You can expect each to be a recurring name here on the BM5. Tomorrow is also a big day possibly for Ohio State's Class of 2021 plan: Top offensive line target Donovan Jackson will announce his college decision. We get into all of it. Wade a minute! Coombs still coming? 2020 expecations
Many expected that Shaun Wade would turn pro following the 2019 college football season. However, the third-year sophomore defensive back decided to return to Ohio State in 2020 to be the Buckeyes' spotlight player on defense. Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss what Wade's return means for OSU, plus: * What will the secondary look like for the Buckeyes in 2020? Who will be the other three starters alongside Wade? * Looks like we will have to wait another week for Kerry Coombs to be announced as Ohio State's new co-defensive coordinator/DB coach, right? Buckeyes to exercise demons vs Clemson tomorrow?
Ohio State and Clemson have faced off three times in the history of the programs, and all three contests ended in disaster for the Buckeyes. In the 1978 Gator Bowl, the Tigers defeated OSU 17-15, a game that will always be remembered for Woody Hayes striking a Clemson player. Hayes was fired and never coached again. In the 2014 Orange Bowl (2013 season), Ohio State lost 40-35 to the Tigers. That game will be best remembered as when OSU quarterback Braxton Miller fractured his labrum (right shoulder). Miller never played quarterback in a game again. In the 2017 Fiesta Bowl/College Football Playoff semifinal (2016 season), Urban Meyer suffered the most embarrassing loss of his career considering the stage it was on. Clemson pounded the Buckeyes 31-0, forcing Meyer to revamp his offensive coaching staff in the following weeks (bringing in Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson). On Saturday, Ohio State has a chance to exercise those demons when they play Clemson in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl/CFP semifinal. What are thoughts on this matchup? Who will win this game and why? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle for a special edition of the 5ish "live" from Arizona to discuss all of that and more. Steve and Dan's Fiesta Bowl picks
OK, it's time. The holiday is over. Let's focus, people. Ohio State has a national championship to win. First, Clemson. * Payback time. This movie was a horror show three years ago. But Ohio State is a much different outfit. Clemson is, too. * Justin Fields vs. Trevor Lawrence. Two Georgia boys playing their trade for out-of-state powerhouses. Same high school year. Same NFL Draft (we assume). One will emerge as next year's likely No. 1 overall draft pick and Heisman Trophy fave. * Is Clemson's defensive line up to the challenge? How about the Tigers' offensive line? Ohio State will present the biggest challenge for each all season. * Can Ohio State's future NFL defensive backs consistently challenge Clemson's future NFL receivers? * Dabo Swinney vs. Ryan Day. Is the new guy ready? 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong is here in the Xmas glow to talk Fiesta Bowl. Let's get rolling. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! 'We're not Wofford'
Ohio State has not been a real underdog all season. That changes Saturday night. Clemson is a 2.5-point favorite over the Buckeyes in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. But the national vibe is stronger. That vibe is the Buckeyes are headed for a buzzsaw. Clemson's combination of talent, experience and coaching will just be too much for the Buckeyes. Yeah ... right. Duane Long is here to offer a perspective different from that. Quite different. It's Christmas Eve morning. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters! Rise and sign | What will happen with Stroud, Phillips, Martinez?
It is national signing day in college football and The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show to talk all about it from Ohio State's perspective. The Buckeyes will sign at least 23 players today, perhaps 24 depending on what quarterback CJ Stroud decides to do when he makes his announcement at 12:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Two verbal commits -- cornerback Clark Phillips and athlete Cam Martinez -- will not sign today. Phillips will decide between OSU and Utah on Thursday, while Martinez will likely wait until what is now the late signing period in February to make his final call. What is Bax's take on those situations? Ryan Day and the Buckeyes currently have the No. 4 class in the nation, per the 247Sports Composite. And they are the only Big Ten team in the top 10. The class is led by perhaps the best wide receiver group we have seen. The offensive line class is also extremely impressive. What else stands out about the class, both good and not so good? All of that and more is coming at you on the signing day version of the 5ish.
