We bring in 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to get an expert opinion. Bucknuts Morning 5: Dec. 12, 2018
"The Granddaddy of Them All" is not getting much discussion amongst Ohio State fans. Part of that is because of the existence of the College Football Playoff, and the Buckeyes not being a part of the four-team field. Another reason is the pending retirement of Urban Meyer and promotion of Ryan Day is by far the biggest topic of conversation when OSU fans banter about their squad. However, on today's show, Ohio State's matchup with Washington in the Rose Bowl is the crux of the show. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for that; plus the latest on the Zach Harrison recruitment, what coaching changes could be in store for OSU after the Rose Bowl, and more. All of that is coming your way on this Rosy edition of the Wednesday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: December 12, 2018
Change ... change ... change. Sometimes it's scary. Sometimes it's exciting. Well ... what's the deal at Ohio State now that Urban Meyer is in the process of handing the reins to Pat Day? So far ... so good. Could the staff be facing upheaval? Are there committed recruits ready to defect? Is Ohio State about to be knocked off its Big Ten perch? We brought in Duane Long, who takes a break from dealing with multiple boxer puppies to offer up his opinions on the 'Day regime' thus far. Bucknuts Morning 5: Dec. 10, 2018
For several weeks, Zach Harrison appeared to be trending Michigan's way. Now the No. 1 recruit in the state of Ohio seems to be leaning toward Ohio State. But why? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle to give his take on that (and Bank has always kept his Crystal Ball to OSU as far as Harrison is concerned). Also on the docket: What is the latest with Harry Miller, Jordan Battle, Cade Stover, Doug Nester, Nick Broeker and Cavon Butler? What are thoughts on Ryan Day being promoted to head coach? What type of recruiter is Day? All of that and much more on the 22-minute (yes, 22-minute) Monday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: Dec. 7, 2018
Jonah Booker believes Ohio State made the correct decision in promoting Ryan Day to head coach, even without conducting a national search. However, JBook says that Day must do a complete overhaul of the defensive coaching staff. JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus: * What is our overall confidence level in Day? * Are we buying into any of the conspiracy theories that Urban Meyer's decision to retire really wasn't his decision alone? * Is there any chance Dwayne Haskins wins the Heisman Trophy tomorrow night? Bucknuts Morning 5: December 6, 2018
There's an old adage about the transfer of power: You don't want to replace The Guy. You want to the guy who replaces the guy who replaced The Guy. Ryan Day won't have that luxury. He is replacing Urban Meyer (see: The Guy). Can he pull it off? Time will tell. Can he maintain Ohio State's recruiting momentum that actually started the day Urban was announced as Ohio State's coach on xxxxx. We bring in Steve Wiltfong, director of recruiting for 247Sports, to get his opinion on how Day will fare with the current recruits and long term on the trail. Spend 5ish with us today, 'Nutters! Bucknuts Morning 5: Dec. 5, 2018
They say you don't want to be the coach who follows a legend. You want to replace the coach that replaced a legend. However, Urban Meyer is absolutely a legend, and Ryan Day will of course be taking over for him as Ohio State's head coach following the Rose Bowl. On today's show, the People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the following: * Looking back on the Meyer era and everything he accomplished. * Thoughts on Day taking the gig, without a national search being conducted by OSU. Is he ready for this job? * Mickey Marotti and Mark Pantoni sticking around on Day's staff, which is huge. * What coaching changes might Day make on the defensive side of the ball? * Do we believe that Meyer will never coach again? Bucknuts Morning 5: December 4, 2018
The Urban Meyer Era is ending in Columbus. The esteemed coach will guide the Buckeyes through the Rose Bowl before being replaced by offensive coordinator Pat Day. Quite a Tuesday a.m. announcement to wake up to. Was it the most shocking news we've ever heard? No. This move was expected by many. What is our reaction to the news? What comes next for the Buckeyes? How does it affect recruiting ... the staff ... current players? You could say there is plenty to discuss. Duane Long is here. Bucknuts Morning 5: December 3, 2018
Sure, it was a weekend that produced a bunch of answers. It also produced a bunch of questions. Since we last convened, Ohio State won the Big Ten title and saw its College Football Playoff hopes vanish. We brought in the most senior scribe on the Buckeye beat - our very own Steve Helwagen - to tackle all the developments. * Was the performance against Northwestern one of the season's best? * Has Dwayne Haskins played so well his early exit is inevitable? * Georgia over Ohio State: The hell? * Fighting Chris Petersons: A formidable challenge? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 30, 2018
Nervous that Ohio State might be overlooking Northwestern in Saturday's Big Ten Championship Game? Well, Jonah Booker says you shouldn't be. He expects the No. 6 Buckeyes (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) will have their way with the No. 21 Wildcats (8-4, 8-1). JBook joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to break down the OSU-NU matchup and why he is so confident. Other topics that are broached include the Buckeyes' chances to make the College Football Playoff, plus how Dwayne Haskins has managed to exceed the lofty expectations that were placed on him by some people. (For example: Writers at Bucknuts.) All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: November 29, 2018
Not many pundits predicted Ohio State would beat Michigan in The Game. But 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong was indeed one of those pundits. And Wiltfong called it well in advance. He's here today to accept kudos on said premonition, plus talk Northwestern and the latest on recruiting. * How did The Game help recruiting? * Can Ohio State repeat the effort this weekend? * What does Northwestern offer as an opponent? * No Zach Harrison discussion whatsoever. * Is Renardo Green ready to trade Tallahassee for Columbus? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 28, 2018
"Win and you're in" is not the phrase Ohio State can use as it enters the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern. If the Buckeyes want to make the College Football Playoff, a narrow win over the Wildcats likely will not do the trick. The CFP selection committee made that fairly clear when it placed OSU No. 6 in the most recent rankings. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss the Buckeyes' CFP chances, plus: * Northwestern is no joke. What problems might the Wildcats give the Buckeyes? * It's still so much fun to look back on the 62-39 win over Michigan, so that's exactly what we're going to do. It was one of the most-enjoyable OSU-UM games for Ohio State fans, and that is saying a lot. * What can be expected from Wyatt Davis as he takes over for the injured Demetrius Knox at right guard? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 26, 2018
What is an “Urban special”? It is when Urban Meyer is an underdog – or just doubted in general – and he makes your team look like the junior varsity playing the Division I state champions. Let’s be honest: It happened to Ohio State in the 2006 national championship game when Meyer’s Florida squad handed the Buckeyes a 41-14 defeat. And it sure happened on Saturday when Meyer’s Ohio State squad dismantled Michigan and its No. 1-ranked defense 62-39. Which included the Buckeyes taking a knee at the 7-yard line in the closing moments to not rub it in. Alex Gleitman joins Dave Biddle for today’s show to look back on The Game, look ahead to the matchup against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game this Saturday in Indianapolis, talk about OSU’s chances to make the College Football Playoff, and Wyatt Davis replacing the injured Demetrius Knox as Ohio State’s starting right guard. It is the eve of Thanksgiving and it's time to talk all about The Game. The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle to discuss this year's rendition of the Ohio State-Michigan game. The Wolverines are 4.5-point favorites. Is this the year they finally win in Columbus, or will the Buckeyes take care of business? What are predictions on the final score? Also on the docket: * How might rainy weather affect The Game? * What are injury updates for both squads? * What is something Ohio State can perhaps exploit about UM? Bucknuts Morning 5: November 20, 2018
The stakes are high. They always are for The Game. But the tension is amped when a Big Ten title game berth is on the line. Add in the speculation surrounding Ohio State and you have an emotionally charged atmosphere leading up to the regular season finale on noon at The Shoe. Duane Long is here to help put it all in perspective. ** Is Urban Meyer really considering an exit from Columbus? ** When it comes to Ohio State's struggles on defense, is the problem scheme, personnel or ... both? ** What can we expect from The Game? Will Dwayne Haskins and the offense produce against arguably the nation's best defense? Can the Ohio State defense rally after a miserable effort in College Park? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 19, 2018
It is the best rivalry in college football, and the stakes could not be much higher for the 2018 edition of the Ohio State-Michigan game. The Wolverines are favored by 3.5 points, meaning the Buckeyes are underdogs in The Game in Columbus for the first time since 2004. (Which was a 37-21 OSU victory in Troy Smith's coming-out-party, by the way.) What chances do we give Ohio State of pulling off the mild upset and sending Jim Harbaugh to 0-4 against OSU, and Urban Meyer to 7-0 against UM? Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for takes on all of that and much more on a 19-minute edition of the Monday extravaganza. The New Orleans Saints (also known in some circles as the New Orleans Buckeyes) are arguably the best team in the NFL this season. They also have a future Hall of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees, who is having an outstanding season. Yet, the Saints often use backup QB Taysom Hill in red zone and short yardage situations. Ohio State is starting to do the same thing with Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell. Will the Buckeyes continue giving Martell more opportunities, or is that more in the window dressing category? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual Friday visit to discuss that, plus: * What are thoughts on the Buckeyes' game at Maryland tomorrow? * Is Ohio State's offense taking enough deep shots in the passing game this season? * What are thoughts on Brendon White finally earning the starting job at safety? * What is a wrinkle that would be helpful for OSU's defense? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 7, 2018
Many people expected Ohio State would move up in the College Football Playoff rankings this week, but that did not happen. The Buckeyes remain No. 10 in the CFP rankings, and not only need to win out to make the four-team field, they likely need some help from the outside. And the Buckeyes also need to pass the eye test down the stretch. You know, actually look the part of a playoff squad. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus: * What is the biggest concern for the Buckeyes in terms of facing Michigan State this Saturday in East Lansing? Can OSU run the ball effectively against the Spartans' defense? * Ohio State will tip off its basketball season tonight at Cincinnati. What a cool way to start the season. What can be expected from Chris Holtmann's team? All of that and more on the midweek extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: November 6, 2018
It's Ohio State vs. Michigan State this Saturday in East Lansing. It's always a big game. But this is a BIG game. If Ohio State wins in impressive fashion, sincere faith in this version of the Buckeyes could be 'restored.' If the Buckeyes see the Spartans' No. 1 rush defense dominate ... yeah, you know that will be awful. Can the Buckeyes get it done? Does the Nebraska game offer any evidence towards an answer to that? Duane Long is here to wax poetic about the current state of the Buckeyes and a commitment flip we should all bet ecstatic about. Spend 5ish with us today!!! Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 5, 2018
Ohio State sophomore safety Brendon White had his personal coming-out-party against Nebraska on Saturday with 13 tackles in less than 3 quarters of play. Why did it take so long for White to see the field this season on defense? And which other backup players perhaps deserve a chance to play for the Buckeyes? Alex Gleitman joins Dave Biddle for today's show to talk about all of that, plus: * It was a big recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes with them landing 2019 RB Marcus Crowley and 2020 WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. * The way Urban Meyer is recruiting, what does that say about his future at OSU? * What are early thoughts on Ohio State's game at Michigan State this Saturday? Bucknuts Morning 5: Nov. 2, 2018
Ohio State, fresh off its bye week, will get back in action on Saturday against visiting Nebraska. What wrinkles might the Buckeyes roll out against the Cornhuskers on both sides of the ball? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus: * What do we expect to see in the OSU-Nebraska game in general? * Is Shaun Wade finally going to move into the starting lineup at safety? * What is JBook's take on the Urban Meyer situation and the comments the Buckeyes' boss made earlier this week about his health and more? * Four-star prospect Wandale Robinson picked Kentucky over Ohio State, Nebraska and many others on Thursday. The Buckeyes still have 14 commitments in their 2019 class, and are ranked 15th in the country per the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings. JBook answers whether the Buckeyes will miss out on finishing with a top-10 class this year or not. All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: Oct. 31, 2018
Ohio State is No. 10 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2018 season, which were released Tuesday evening. Is there good reason for Buckeye fans to be optimistic their team will run the table and make the CFP? Or, especially with it being Halloween, are you a bit scared when you think about how this season might finish for the Buckeyes? Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on today's show to discuss that, plus dish out other treats such as: * Other than Shaun Wade perhaps starting at safety over Isaiah Pryor, it does not appear as though Ohio State made any changes to its starting lineup during the off week. Is that a surprise? Who are some backups that perhaps should be given more of a chance on game days? * What are thoughts about the Nebraska game this Saturday? * What do we make of Urban Meyer's comments on Tuesday about his health? Do you feel better or worse about Meyer's future after hearing from the coach and his doctor? All of that and more on the Halloween extravaganza. Everyone is relaxed, refreshed and recharged following the bye week, right? Let's hope that's true of the Buckeyes. Their last public effort was anything but inspiring. Hopefully, you'll be inspired by today's show as Duane Long and I discussed: ** Urban Meyer says he is coming back. Are we surprised? Thrilled? Still concerned? ** Will there be three Ohioans to flip their commitment to the good guys this cycle? ** What changes can be expected to Ohio State's offensive and defensive lineups on Saturday? ** Who is Devine Ozigbo? It feels like a coin-flip when it comes to predicting if Zach Harrison will select Ohio State or Michigan. Bill "Bank" Greene joins Dave Biddle for today's show to give his take on what will happen with Harrison and why, plus: * Will the Buckeyes get offensive lineman J.D. Duplain from Strongsville, to flip from Michigan State to OSU? * Will defensive tackle Cavon Butler flip from Kentucky to Ohio State? And is that pretty much a lock at this point? * What will happen with Wandale Robinson when he announces his decision on Thursday? * Looking at the 2018 team itself, do we expect the Buckeyes will bounce back and finish the season strong? Or are some of the issues beyond repair at this point? * Will Urban Meyer get his fire back? Or did it really never leave? All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza. How much is all the talk from people like Paul Finebaum that Urban Meyer could step down after this season hurting Ohio State's recruiting efforts? Jonah Booker has some strong feelings on that, and he joins Dave Biddle for today's show. What does JBook think will happen with Meyer’s future? How long would Meyer stay at OSU if it was up to him and his health was good? Will the Buckeyes win out this regular season and win the Big Ten championship? How good really is Michigan? Bucknuts Morning 5: Oct. 24, 2018
Former Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith's court case involving his ex-wife, Courtney, was resolved on Tuesday. The most notable item is that any charges of domestic violence by Zach Smith were dropped. He pleaded guilty to a minor misdemeanor of “disorderly conduct.” That won't fit with the national narrative, but it is reality. Also, what is up with the report that there is strife between Urban Meyer and Gene Smith? Meyer refuted it yesterday, and we believe him. But we also think there are still hard feelings on Meyer's end that are geared toward OSU president Michael Drake. If that is true, how might it affect Meyer's future at Ohio State? Or might it not have any effect? The People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle on the Wednesday extravaganza to discuss all of that and much more. Bucknuts Morning 5: October 23, 2018
Did the bye week come at the right time for the Buckeyes? Definitely. Why? Because this team (program?) is at a 'crossroads.' Will the Buckeyes double-down on what they've done thus far? Or will they use the extra time off to make personnel or scheme changes? Duane Long has strong opinions on this so it's good timing that he is today's featured guest. Sit back and enjoy 5ish with us! Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle on today’s show to sift through the rubble. For all the worrying about what is wrong with Ohio State this season, are fans not taking enough time to appreciate the best passing attack they have ever seen from the Buckeyes? Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for his usual visit to talk about that, plus: * Is OSU's wide receiving corps the best it has ever been top-to-bottom (e.g. 1-7)? * Despite the greatness of the passing offense, how big of a concern is the Buckeyes' offensive line? * What are predictions and thoughts heading into tomorrow night's game against a good Purdue squad? * Urban Meyer says sophomore safety Isaiah Pryor is "getting a lot better." Does JBook agree? * What is JBook's take on Nick Bosa ending his college career to prepare for the NFL? All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza. Hill stepping up as perhaps the go-to receiver on OSU's team. * Should the Buckeyes consider resting Dre'Mont Jones against Indiana? * What are predictions for tomorrow’s OSU-IU game? Bucknuts Morning 5: Oct. 3, 2018
Which Ohio State players should be seeing the field more often? That is one of many topics of today's show as the People's Champ, Matt Baxendell, joins Dave Biddle for today's show. Also on the docket: * Should the Buckeyes think about resting some of their banged-up starters such as Dre'Mont Jones, Robert Landers and Mike Weber this Saturday against Indiana? * The Hoosiers are 4-1, but is that record misleading? * It was good to see Nick Bosa back in Columbus at OSU's practice last evening. Bucknuts Morning 5: October 2, 2018
These are good times for the Buckeyes. Urban Meyer's football team already overcame the biggest obstacle on the schedule. Chris Holtmann's basketball team added another fantastic recruit to the mix. First, the pigskin. Will Ohio State suffer a similar fate to last season? Meaning: After the huge win over Penn State, will the Buckeyes trip up like they did in Iowa City last season? Duane Long is here to opine on that and several other footballish topics: * Updated vibes on Dwayne Haskins post-White Out? * Do we agree with Pro Football Focus' evaluation of Buckeye linebackers? * The secondary? Halfway there? * What to expect when the Hoosiers come calling this weekend. Spend 5ish with us this a.m., 'Nutters!!! Bucknuts Morning 5: Oct. 1, 2018
It is the first day of October, but we are still talking about Ohio State's thrilling 27-26 comeback victory at Penn State Saturday night. The Buckeyes were down by 12 points with 8 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but mounted two late touchdown drives to earn the win. There are many things we will remember about this game for a long time, such as Binjimen Victor's 47-yard touchdown reception and the coming-out-party for OSU defensive end Chase Young. Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle to discuss all of that, plus: * Ohio State's defensive line is very banged up. Nick Bosa is obviously out until at least November, and now Dre'Mont Jones and Robert Landers are both dinged. * Why doesn't Ohio State utilize QB sneaks in short-yardage situations? All of that and more on the Monday extravaganza. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Bucknuts Morning 5: Sept. 28, 2018
A lot of people got hot and bothered by a graphic that Ohio State released on Thursday that said, in all caps, "SILENCE." It was obviously in reference to quieting Penn State's "white out" Saturday night ... but that did not stop people from expressing all kinds of fake outrage via social media. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle for today's show, and let's just say JBook is not amused by the developments yesterday. But the real story is how the Buckeyes will fare against the Nittany Lions, and we get knee deep into discussion about that. Also, will Urban Meyer continue to allow Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson to keep the foot on the pedal offensively? All of that and more on the Friday extravaganza. Bucknuts Morning 5: September 20, 2018
Urban Meyer is back. No matter what those outside Ohio have to say. Has Meyer's absence hurt Ohio State's recruiting efforts? We bring in 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong to answer this question. Nobody is more plugged in on the trail and we think Bucknutters will be pleased with what Steve has to say on this topic. Bucknuts Morning 5: Aug. 31, 2018
Jeff Wadsworth quit his post on Ohio State's board of trustees because he did not believe Urban Meyer's penalty of three games was long enough. Then Wadsworth proceeded to air dirty laundry to the New York Times on Thursday, and tried to paint OSU and Meyer in a very bad light. This of course does not sit well with us here at Bucknuts. We felt it was a very weak move by a man who was known as a weak "leader" during his time at Ohio State. Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss that, plus talk some actual football for most of the show. * What are we most excited to see tomorrow when the Buckeyes kick off the 2018 season against visiting Oregon State? * What will the offensive game-plan and overall offensive scheme for OSU? * How concerned should you be about the offensive line? * What are JBook's prediction for how Ohio State will fare overall this season?
