Ep 157BYP 157: How To Use Social Media To Reinvent Yourself
Many people want to "reinvent" themselves career-wise but they're just not sure where to start. One of the keys to reinventing yourself successfully is already in your hands: social media. If you use any kind of social media right now, you're already engaged in what I call "personal branding". In this episode, I share two strategies to use social media intentionally to take control of the conversation people are having about you. The first pathway: Start with your favorite social media app, the one you use most. Document your day - don't worry about "creating" Write something on your post that adds value by giving context to your post You'll also learn a key strategy you can leverage for Facebook or LinkedIn to shape your personal brand if you're looking to start a side-hustle or launch a new business. A few notable quotes from this episode: If you're wondering, "Is this off-brand?" it probably is. When it comes to personal branding, you are what you share. Ep 156BYP 156: From Unemployed to $200,000+ In Less Than One Year with Wes Gay
After being unemployed for 6 months, Wes Gay quickly scaled his marketing consulting practice to six figures in the first year, and today he's here to share what he did, why it worked, and how you can leverage it in your own work. Wes believes something deep in his bones: clarity always wins. Whether it's in marketing, sales, leadership, or personal relationships, being clear is the best way to connect, grow, and move forward. He's helped dozens of companies, ranging from startups to billion dollar brands, discover a new level of clarity through the StoryBrand framework. He lives with his wife, two young boys, and their overprotective dog in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA. When he's not hanging with his family or helping businesses increase revenue, he's probably looking for a good espresso and donut. Get Wes' terrific guide, Slogans That Sell, at wesgay.com Some questions I asked Wes: How did you get started? What's the first thing people need to do in order to generate more free leads? Where can we find those people we want as clients? What's something we do once we determine our ideal client? How do we engage without being sleazy or salesy? Facebook ads are great because they're passive, enabling prospects to engage with our content without taking our time. But what makes your approach better? Ep 155BYP 155: The Two Most Life-Sucking Words You Can Tell Yourself
Behold two of the most sleep-stealing, life-sucking, worry-causing words I tell myself: "By now." Fight as I may, they always seem to find a way to seep into my thoughts. Maybe you've said a few of these to yourself: By now…I should be out of debt. By now…I should have lost 20 lbs. By now…I should be finished with school. By now…I should have kicked that habit. By now…I should be married. By now…I should have a bigger house. By now…I should be famous. By now…I should know what I want to do with my life. In this episode, you'll learn practical steps on how to deal with "by now" syndrome, as well as the concept of "death by a thousand cuts". You'll also learn how to position yourself for greater opportunities. Ep 154BYP 154: Listener Q&A Episode
Every few episodes we'll be doing a listener Q&A episode, and this is the first one! Most of these questions have come in via my Instagram channel at instagram.com/mikekimtv. If you have a question, hit me up there and we may end up using your question on a future episode! Joining me as co-host on this episode is my friend, former assistant, and travel expert Chelsea Brinkley. Check out Chelsea on Instagram at instagram.com/travelbrinkley! Here are the questions that were sent in: 1. The big problem I'm trying to solve in my life, at the moment, is deciphering the next season in my life. I'm 36, and have been an educator for 13 years. I'm finding myself bored and unfulfilled. I'm seeking a new direction, but having a hard time finding which way to turn. To me, creating something from nothing, and having someone else find enough value in it to purchase it, is an indescribable feeling. I have an Amazon FBA business that I started just last year. It's been an awesome ride, but I can't seem to shake past the fear of going all in. I question whether I can still serve others and serve God in an e-commerce business. - Ryan 2. Hi Mike, I'm founder and director of an outreach to prostituted women. What pisses me off? Patriarchy, injustice and the multitude of ways women are hurt by it. It breaks my heart that women and children, usually the innocent ones, suffer so unfairly because of it. But what problem am I trying to solve? Trafficking, maybe? Injustice? I don't know. The truth is I am tired of fighting, tired of trying to change the impossible. And as I step back on sabbatical, I'm realizing, how tired I am of "the hustle." Tired of trying to prove that this is a worthwhile fight. Tired of trying to prove that we're a worthy investment. I once told a friend, "I just have to accept that not everyone is going to care about this as much as I do." And now I wonder if I still care. How much more energy or desire or creativity do I have in me to keep pursuing this dream? I've begun to write a book about our experiences over the last 20 yrs. And again I'm running into the same problem, the hustle to get published, find an agent, sell copies…. How do I return to my first love and escape all the seemingly necessary hype? - name withheld 3. I am currently beginning my career in Washington D.C. in a think tank. The position did not exist before for me, so while I am grateful to be able to define the scope of my own role in the organization, I am terrified of disappointing the people who made an investment in hiring me. Do you have any thoughts on how I can move forward in order to relieve that anxiety? Perhaps like you, I did grow up with an Asian tiger mom. The pressure she put on me when I was younger evolved into pressure I put on myself, where everything I do could be better and must be better. - Scott 4. Just listened to episode 1. Just what I needed. Thank you. What pisses me off is that often times the measure of how successful you are is in terms of how expensive and how much stuff you have and how big your house is. Oh course money and earning a living is important but experiencing life to its fullest is truly important to me. So many people I know are "maybe someday" people. Others are "could of, would of, should of" people. We don't know when we'll leave this earth, living the life, experiencing the life without regrets is what I strive for. Big problem to solve... building the work from anywhere biz that will fit the travel lifestyle that my husband and I want to achieve. Have already started and recently made some very good shifts and am gaining clarity to grow biz. It's a process for sure, a journey. - Gayle 5. It took me over 30 years to finally find what brought me meaning in my life and I really loved episode #1 because it really does begin with the relationship you have with yourself, the way you view yourself, and the beliefs you have with yourself. But the problem I think is that no one feels safe anymore to be themselves. We're exposed to about 10,000 advertisements telling us what to do, we have our culture (Asians for sure) where we often have a path set out for is to follow by our parents, and now we have social media where people spend so much time comparing themselves to others. I'm guilty giving in to all of these and its all this noise that exists that made me never feel safe to just be myself so that I can start really listening and hearing about what mattered to me the most. It's whats helped me figured out my process that helps people feel safe and tune into their passions and talents as well. Thanks again for sharing! - Eugene 6. I'm working on a membership site but getting overwhelmed with how much content I need and trying to figure out how to target a very tough demographic (pro athletes). I want these guys to be able to handle their own stuff so they can still make it work after their career is over. Too many guys go broke cause they can't do anything but their sport. I have a background
Ep 153BYP 153: How I Use Personality Tests for Personal Growth
Personality tests are powerful tools for personal growth. Some people think personality tests "box them in" but personally, I feel they open up our understanding of ourselves. If you can think of tests like the Briggs Myers, DISC, or Enneagram as a more concrete way to observe yourself, then you're well on your way to growth. Recommended (free) Enneagram test: exploreyourtype.com Recommended Ennegram results: enneagraminstitute.com All of these are tools to empower your capacity for self-observation. Here are three ways I use these tests for growth: Learn how you rest Learn how you relate Learn how you work Knowing these three things allows you to make better decisions in life. Ep 152BYP 152: The 5 Psychological Steps Behind Why You Delay Decisions
Decisions, decisions, decisions! Have you ever had to make a decision and kept delaying it? There's actually a 5-step psychological process behind why you get excited to make a change in your life -- and then fail to follow through: Satisfaction Dissatisfaction Emotional Brink Moment of Insight The Opening That's what we're going to talk about on this episode. Once we understand how we make decisions, then we can make better ones and break the cycle. In this episode I share: The root meaning of the word "decide" Why, when helping others, you must only do everything you SHOULD, and not everything you CAN The power behind the phrase, "There must be more to my life than ____..." Ep 151BYP 151: 3 Bizarre Questions That Help You Find Your Life Purpose
What makes you leave a box in search of a new nirvana? That's what we're going to talk about on this episode. As we kick off the first few episodes, we're going to look at the most important relationship you have: the relationship you have with yourself. Ultimately you're the only person that can take responsibility for your own life, but if you've ever asked, "What am I going to do with my life?" you are not alone! Life is not linear. Unfortunately, most of us are underprepared for that simple fact because most of our developmental years are straightforward... But real life is anything but straightforward. In this episode I share: 3 bizarre (but effective!) questions to help you find your life purpose What pisses me off about corporate America and formalized education Why seeing people who live like zombies and spend their days at jobs they don't enjoy breaks my heart The "only" two career paths I was allowed to consider when growing up (typical Asian kid) Why real life is all about "off-roading" rather than highway driving A deeper look at what the word "fulfillment" really means If you'd like to connect elsewhere online, the easiest place to reach me is via Instagram: instagram.com/mikekimtv Drop me a DM because I read and respond to every single one! BYP 149 - Protecting Your Intellectual Property with Steve Sponseller
You work hard every day to craft your ideas, frameworks, and strategies. But what can you do to legally protect them? Today I interview Steve Sponseller, a patent attorney based in Spokane, Washington about best-practices when it comes to protecting our intellectual property. In this episode you will learn: The difference between copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets What legally constitutes a trademark, and when you should file for one Who really "owns" the creation when a contractor (like a designer or copywriter) creates intellectual property for a client When to use U.S. based contractors vs. when it's ok to use contractors who are overseas and so much more While this topic isn't the "sexiest" topic out there, it's extremely important. Several years ago I witness Michael Hyatt go through a trademark tiff with the National Speakers Association which I blogged about here. Thankfully things worked out for both groups, but it was a looming reminder that IP conflicts can come unexpectedly, and that we should all be prepared for them. Grab Your Copy of Steve Sponseller's Intellectual Property Checklist Intellectual property is not optional. Every business, from solo entrepreneurs to large corporations, has valuable intellectual property that must be protected. Grab Steve's free checklist here: Get the IP Checklist here

BYP 146 - [Positioning] How to Position Yourself to Reach Any Marketing You Want
Positioning is one of the most important, yet least understood, aspects of marketing. It's clear when you see top-tier brands like Louis Vuitton (luxury) vs. everyday brands like Wal-Mart, but things get foggy when branding a person. But that's exactly what a personal brand is: a brand built around you. In this episode I take you behind-the-scenes of one of my private workshops where I help personal brand builders get clear on their positioning in a way that allows them to reach any market. We often start with these 3 questions: What pisses you off? What breaks your heart? What is the big problem you're trying to solve? The answers to these questions provide the basis on which you will build your positioning. • Join Marketing Mastery Insider: mikekim.com/insider • Info on Marketing Mastery Workshop: mikekim.com/workshop

BYP 145 - The 3 Pillars of A Personal Brand Blog
This is a "back to the basics" episode as I lay out the 3 things you need to build a minimum viable platform for your personal brand business. I'm amazed at how many coaches, consultants, and speakers I meet who don't have all three of these in place in a way that allows them to leverage their exposure and referrals. Homepage Services Page About Page There should be 3x as many calls to action for the Services page compared to the About page. Also, you should consider how people are getting to certain pages on your website. For example, most of my clients go directly to my homepage, while most of my blog readers (who don't hire me for contract work) rarely to go my homepage. Over the past two years, I geared my homepage to private clients while still growing a blog readership since my readers usually went directly to posts that I wrote and found them via social media or through my email list. BYP 144 - Why I Ended My $60,000 Per Year Mastermind (And What I'm Doing Instead)
In recent weeks I've made some big changes in my business. The biggest change has to do with my paid mastermind group ... and the decision to shut it down. In this episode, I talk about the reasons behind the decison, as well as the things I've been working on since (including two new launches that have generated more than the mastermind group that I decided to close down). BYP 142 - How I Set My Purpose, Vision, Mission, Goals, and Tasks
In this episode, I share my approach to clarifying my purpose, vision, mission, goals, and tasks. Tune in, and you'll also hear about some big changes to the podcast, namely why I'm going to end this show at episode 150. There's no shortage of talk on concepts like purpose, vision, and mission and those words are often used interchangeably. For me, I see them in a certain hierarchy, which helps me see them sequentially. For example, this is my Purpose Statement in life: • The purpose of my life is to be love, enjoy abundance, and do generous deeds for myself and others. • The vision I have to manifest my purpose (at least business-wise) is to commit the next 25 years of my life to connect influencers for greater impact in the world. • The mission now might be a clear and compelling statement like, "I will host 4 events per year, 3 in the U.S. and 1 overseas, to connect influencers for greater impact so they can collaborate to solve big problems in the world." • The goals might then be something like "Have an average attendance of 40 people per event" or "Generate $250,000 per year with those events." • The tasks would then be obvious: book speakers, secure venues, create marketing campaigns, and so forth. If you're interested in doing this exercise for yourself, simply use the framework I've listed above and fill in your own thoughts. Borrow my purpose statement for now, and change out the words so it reads: The purpose of my life is to be ____, enjoy ____, and do ____ for myself and others. BYP 141 - The Tony Robbins Guide to Year End Goal Setting
In this episode, I share the approach to goal setting that I learned at Tony Robbins' Date with Destiny seminar in West Palm Beach, FL. Date with Destiny was one of the most powerful and important events I've ever attended, and though I can't do the impact justice through a podcast, I felt one of the best things I could share would be Tony's approach to goal-setting. If you're anything like me, goal-setting is a mixed bag. There are a lot of good goal-setting frameworks out there, but they're also easy to get tired of. I found myself in that boat and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this one. The Tony Robbins Guide to Year-End Goal Setting: Set 4 categories: 1. Things & Stuff, 2. Experiences, 3. Treasure, 4. Contributions Write down 1, 3, 5, or 10 next to each goal to represent the years Write down your one-year goals and rank the top 4 Then ask 4 follow up questions for each goal The 4 Follow-Up Questions: Why to you want to accomplish this goal? What is the pain you will feel if you don't accomplish this goal? What is the pleasure you'll get from accomplishing this goal? How will accomplishing this goal contribute to others? BYP 140 - The Zone of Genius - How To Get There and Stay There
I have committed to living everyday in my Zone of Genius. The Zone of Genius is a concept penned by one Gay Hendricks in a book titled The Big Leap. Hendricks contends that all of our problems in life stem from one BIG problem: The Upper Limit Problem (or ULP! for short). The Upper Limit Problem essentially prevents us from sustained enjoyment of our success … because we subconsciously don't feel we deserve it. Thus, we end up sabotaging ourselves so that we somehow fall back into our lesser selves. The zone ABOVE the Upper Limit Problem is what he calls the Zone of Genius. The Zone of Genius is where we truly thrive, where our very best talents and abilities allow us to expand everyday in success, love and abundance - and by doing so, inspire others to do the same. There are 4 false beliefs that prevent us from living in our Zone of Genius: that we are fundamentally flawed in some way that by succeeding, we're being disloyal or leaving people in our past behind that we are a burden to the world that we must dim the bright lights of our brilliance so we don't outshine someone in our past Join the Brand You Community on Facebook: Click here to request access to the Brand You Community Liked this episode? BYP 139 - My Opening Keynote From Influence and Impact 2017
On this episode, I peel back the curtain to share the opening keynote from my recent conference Influence & Impact. Tune in and you'll hear the heart behind why I hosted this event, and some key points that will help you gain clarity in your own personal brand building journey. I ask several questions in this session, and I encourage you to ponder them yourself. What pisses you off? What breaks your heart? What is the big, interesting problem you're trying to solve? BYP 138 - The Five-Tool Player in Personal Branding
I'm a big baseball fan (go Yankees!) and been watching a lot of playoff baseball of late. That got me thinking about 5-tool players. In baseball, a 5-tool player can hit for power, hit for average, run, throw, and play great defense. These players are invaluable to a team, but they also have clearly delineated roles, even if they can do EVERYTHING well. In the thought leadership space, I see 5-tool players as people who can: Speak Write Coach Consult Market This has a huge impact on your income streams. Why? If you can speak, then you can keynote, host seminars, or podcast. If you can write, you can monetize books and blog posts. If you can coach, you can provide 1-on-1 services, group coaching cohorts, or run mastermind groups. If you can consult, you can provide strategy, tactics, or advice for high fees. If you can market, you can do that for others (or for yourself, and save a ton of expenses) I have a new saying: "Money flows to mastery and flees from mediocrity." That means, even if you do all these things well, you still have to tell the market which of these skills you are a MASTER of ... and there can only be one. BYP 126 - [Influence] How Bartenders Use Social Proof to Salt the Jar and Score Tips
On Friday nights, I often catch up with friends in Alphabet City, a neighborhood in the East Village of New York City. One of our favorite spots is a bar called Fat Buddha. We're regulars, so we've gotten to know the bartenders. One night I got I in early before the night crowd strolled in. The crew was still getting setup and I noticed Shannon, one of bartenders, put out a tip jar … then add her own money to it. Ever the marketer, I asked Shannon why she did that. She said it was to "salt" the jar — to give people the impression that tipping with folded bills is proper behavior at their fine establishment. This is the third law of influence: social proof. BYP 125 - [Influence] The Little Known Secret of Catapulting Sales with Reverse Commitment
Years ago, a study showed that just after placing a bet, people felt much more confident about their horse's chance of winning than they did just prior to making the bet. Obviously, their bet doesn't actually change the chances of that horse winning. The jockey, horse, track, weather ... none of it is impacted at all… So why the spike in confidence? It has to do with commitment & consistency, which is the second law of influence that we cover in this episode of the podcast. Each episode will contain some practical tips for your marketing, and a story or two from my own life where I've seen these factors at play. In this episode, I cover the topic of reciprocity. Human beings hate being in a state of obligation, which is precisely why reciprocity is such a powerful tool. BYP 121 - What Healthcare Brands (Like Advil) Can Teach Us About Marketing with Vince Parry

BYP 119 - These 7 Principles of Essentialism Transformed My Life
I, Mike Kim, am an opportunity junkie. While leveraging opportunities has contributed greatly to my success, it's become really apparent that I need a different approach to business and life. These 7 principles from Greg McKeown's book Essentialism have helped me make difficult decisions in the past few weeks: 1. We can make one-time decisions that make a thousand future decisions so we don't exhaust ourselves asking the same questions again and again. 2. Be aware of decision fatigue: the more choices we are forced to make, the more the quality of our decisions deteriorates. 3. Priority is singular. The word priority came into the English language in the 1400s. It meant the very first or prior thing. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple "first" things 4. To eliminate nonessentials means saying no to someone, often. It means pushing against social expectations. Eliminating the nonessentials isn't just about mental discipline. It's about the emotional discipline necessary to say no to social pressure. 5. You can build a great company or build great ideas ... but not both. Jim Collins chose ideas. As a result of this trade-off there are still only three full-time employees in his company, yet his ideas have reached tens of millions of people through his writing, including Good to Great. 6. Without great solitude, no serious work is possible. - Pablo Picasso 7. We need to be as strategic with ourselves as we are with our careers and our businesses. BYP 118 - 5 Keys To Creating Max Impact When Speaking

BYP 113 - [Niches] How to Build A Six-Figure Fitness Brand with Jeff McMahon
It's been said the "riches are in the niches" -- and that's what we're going to be looking at for the next 3 episodes on the podcast. You're going to get real-world case studies of how several of my friends and colleagues have built significant six-figure personal brands by narrowing their niche. In today's episode, I interview Jeff McMahon of Total Body Construction, a personal trainer who has taken his business to the next level by training entrepreneurs virtually in addition to what he does in person. Jeff's business is fascinating because he has three different niches to the same fitness business, and all three have very different types of customers. It's a great lesson on how to extend your product line laterally -- meaning offering the same services to different audiences. We also talk about the realities of building a visually-based business (you've got to look good to build a fitness business, right?) and how Jeff leveraged one client, internet entrepreneur Pat Flynn, to land client after client afterwards. You'll also find out why I personally think most of my fitness coach friends are being duped by big businesses like BeachBody. While I love BeachBody's products, the way they advise their trainers to build businesses is terrible! Mentioned In Today's Episode: Apply For Brand You LIVE here. BYP 111 - How To Make Networking ... Work!
This episode is a direct response to a question posted in the Brand You Community Facebook group by Mariana Ruiz: "One thing that keeps coming to mind is how do you get good at networking? I am a huge introvert and this year I have pushed myself out to join masterminds and even going to a live event. How do I keep up those relationships and nourish the right ones without feeling burnt out? And also making sure they are strategic." A few thoughts regarding my personal mindset when it comes to networking: It's not about hunting, it's about helping. It's about farming. It's about cultivating relationships. I also look to connect with super-connectors. Here are the five points summed in today's episode: Pick who you want to get to know Study these folks ahead of time so you're prepared to add legendary value. Ask questions that get the conversation going. Take a strategic selfie Follow up and offer something they would genuinely find useful Never Ask These Questions! Is there anything I can help you with? BYP 109 - Why 10x Thinking Is Better Than 2x Thinking
One of the keys to my success has been thinking in terms of 10x rather than 2x. Getting more margin in your life is possible. In this episode, you'll discover 3 things that have personally helped me control my work hours, get more sleep, and spend more time with friends and family ... all while upping my game at work. Listen in to discover why I no longer use the phrase "work-life balance" (and what I use instead), why I bought an old-school alarm clock, and how many hours I actually want to work per week.
