Ep 203BYP 203 - 3 Insider Secrets to Landing a Book Deal with Chad Allen
Want to write a book? Whether you're looking to self-publish or land a traditional book deal, one thing is for sure: a great book starts with a great concept. Chad Allen is a writer, speaker, editor, and writing coach. A 20-year publishing professional, he has worked with such bestselling authors as Michael Hyatt, Caroline Leaf, and Mark Batterson. He is the creator of Book Proposal Academy, an online course, and BookCamp, a mentoring and community hub for writers. His passion is helping writers get their books into the world, and he blogs at http://www.chadrallen.com/. A few questions I asked Chad during this interview: How did you find yourself in the book-publishing industry? If you had to narrow down what publishers are looking for to three things, what would they be? I think most of my listeners understand the importance of platform and good writing, so let's talk about book concepts. How do you come up with a good one? How do writers pitch their book idea to publishers? What goes into a book proposal? How have you seen writers shoot themselves in the foot in a book proposal? How can writers make their proposals stand out? Hear more from Chad on his blog, or by following him on Facebook and Twitter. Ep 202BYP 202: How To Start Your Email List From Scratch
One of the most frequent questions I get is "How do you start an email list from scratch?" Simple. Send an email to personal contacts first: friends and family. Start with 10 people, and email them individually from your "real" email account. The email should read like this: SUBJECT: this may not be for you, but... Hey [name], I'm writing some articles about [topic] and thought you might be interested! Can I pass some stuff along to you? [your name] Do not write anything after the question at the end of the email. Do not say thank you. Do not say "I hope you're well!" You must end the message with a question! This creates an open loop that is almost too difficult to ignore. What happens if a person replies with a yes? Send them this next email. You may not even need a new subject line. Just reply to their email in the same thread. If you start a new email, just use the subject line below: SUBJECT: two quick questions! Hi [name], Awesome! Really quick, I have two questions: What's your biggest question about [topic]? What blogs, books, or podcasts do you go to in order to learn more about [topic]? Would you let me know? [your name] If you think this is simple, it is. Simple things work. That's the premise of this entire newsletter. Start with ten people. It's likely you'll get at least one or two positive responses. If it worked once, then it can work again. Pick ten more people. Do the work. Why send the second email? Because I'm teaching you to make a habit of gathering data. Data is what a professional uses to make marketing decisions. In this situation, you are gathering "focus group" data so you can understand: The main challenge or question people have about a particular topic Who your competition is You must send that second email if they respond with a yes to the first. Do not deviate from the plan! *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Ep 199BYP 199: How To Market A Niche Copywriting Business with Katrina Kibben
You may have that "the riches are in the niches" and Katrina Kibben is one of the best examples of this. Katrina is a writing coach for recruiters and CEO of Three Ears Media. In short, she teaches recruiters how to write better job postings. I invited her onto the podcast because she's in a market that not many freelance copywriters give thought to: the corporate market. I asked her several questions including: Why did you want to start a copywriting company for recruiting? What would you tell other copywriters who want to find an industry niche? How do you market a niche copywriting business? Katrina takes a high-energy, humorous, and nontraditional approach to teach global recruiting teams to write about work like humans who care how much a job can change someone's life. Ep 190BYP 190: 7 Things You May Not Know About Me
"In a personal brand, the messenger is often more important than the message." One of the most underrated and overlooked pieces of marketing content you can create is this very episode! In the personal brand space, the messenger is more important than the message. Think about every "guru" or expert you follow. Does that person say anything radically different from his or her competition? Radically different? Probably not. So why do you follow that person over, say, someone else? It's because of the way you feel about them. It's because there's some level of connection or commonality, and that's exactly what doing a "7 Things You May Not Know About Me" post does for you. I often use this kind of content in new settings like group coaching days or mastermind sessions to build rapport and pick up on interesting things about people that might be used in their marketing. For this episode, I selected these topics (and you'll hear my answers to each): Favorite food Nickname as a kid First job Best travel story Family tradition What you wanted to be as a kid Something you are "OCD" about The point is to have fun with this kind of post. I'll often pull from the answers to these questions and create a "Hi, I'm Mike" post after I've received a number of new followers on social media. Otherwise people feel like they're jumping into my story mid-season, and doing a post that summarizes some of these things can help bring people into my journey and brand. I met Kay and Shi during my work with the John Maxwell Team, and we'll be teaming up for a workshop on personal branding in Orlando this August at the International Maxwell Certification event. We cover several business building and social media marketing tips in this interview, including: How Kay and Shi got featured on Throw Down with Bobby Flay on the Food Network How they navigate price increases and changes in market positioning How they created premium experiences (and charged premium prices) in a demographic that didn't seem like it would accept it Some of my favorite takeaways from this episode include the idea that numbers are the language of business, and that we should serve one-to-one, not one-size-fits-all. Ep 188BYP 188: Money Matters: How To Build A Profit-First Business with Jessica Mae
This is one of the most important interviews I've ever done, because it has to do with the financial side of running a personal brand business. Jessica Mae from the Bottom Line CPA has been the single-handed biggest change agent in my business over the past year. In this interview, you'll hear how my own financial negligence completely cleaned me out and how Jessica and her team brought me up from rock-bottom to get to a healthy place in my finances. We talk about the "Profit First" plan and the process by which Jess led me to create systems, gather facts, and then plan my profit strategy. I often joke that I'd let every other contractor I hire go before losing Jess and her team, and it's actually very true. If you struggle AT ALL with finances in your business, i.e. budgeting, payroll, taxes -- anything -- please listen to this interview. Ep 187BYP 187: Put Out the Fire or Fan the Flame - 5 Business Takeaways From My Time in Florida
My time in Florida has come to a close (nothing to worry about, it was always intended to be a 6-month tenure) -- and I have so many incredible insights from my time there. When you work with people of the caliber of John Maxwell and Paul Martinelli, you're bound to pick up on a few things. Here are just a few that impacted me, that I hope will help add value to you: Incentivize people with money and commissions. You'll hear a bit of my background in sales (yes, I used to be a telemarketer!) and how I was inspired to return to my roots in commission-based incentives. You can't save your way to wealth. I spent more money to keep my business running during this time period, and it made more money because of it. You're being hired to either put out a fire or fan a flame. Remember this analogy! It will be of use to you when having conversations with potential clients. Telling is not selling. If all you do is tell, you aren't having a conversation, you're giving a lecture. There are fans, and there are people who actually want to learn. My time in Florida was amazing from a professional standpoint. The wisdom I gained there is invaluable -- but I also gained tremendous personal clarity because, well, I didn't like living in Florida! It was good for me in that I had a place to land for six months. Life was a bit chaotic the past few years, so it was good to be grounded for a season. I realized more than ever that I want to live in a place where I can feed off the energy, atmosphere, and culture. Ep 185BYP 185: How To Craft A Killer Keynote Speech
There's an important distinction between keynotes in the personal brand space: Informational vs. Inspirational. The two require different approaches. Since I'm mostly in the informational space, I prepare for my keynotes this sequence: Determine the Call To Action Write quotables and Tweetables Gather stories for within the presentation, not without Create sparse slides (clean, minimalistic) Dress the way I want to be photographed EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Ep 176BYP 176: 10 Takeaways from the John Maxwell Team's International Maxwell Certification Event
Recently I was able to serve and attend the John Maxwell Team's International Certification Event in Orlando, FL. There were about 3,000 people in attendance, and this was my first opportunity to see and experience what the entire "tribe" of the John Maxwell Team is about. While the stage content is second-to-none, I quickly realized the same can be said of the people. I was privileged to meet incredible people from all sectors of leadership. One thing I often teach when advising brands is to focus on psychographics rather than just demographics. Demographics are statistics: age, income, sex, and so forth. But psychographics are all about mindset and how people think. When it comes to personal development, psychographics trump demographics every time. It was clear in what I saw at this event: there were people from all walks of life, representing over 100 countries, ranging from 11 years old all the way 90 years old. What tied them together? A desire to make the world a better place through positive influence. One of the great privileges of my professional life is to steward the messages of influential people like John Maxwell and Paul Martinelli, and it's often in those side conversations that the best stuff comes out. Ep 175BYP 175: Bourbon, Butterflies, and Real Talk with My Buddy Jeff Goins
This episode is a special one. Recently, my friend Jeff Goins came to visit me in Florida for a few days of deep conversations, beach time, and drinking bourbon. We decided to record one of our conversations for the podcast, and it turned out to be pretty ... unique. Jeff is a multiple time best-selling author, and his most recent book is titled Real Artists Don't Starve. Ep 173BYP 173: How I Deal With Rejection, Every Single Day
Ah, rejection. It's inevitable that we'll face it, yet we'll do anything possible to avoid it. In this episode, I share a little bit about how I deal with rejection (because I get rejected a lot). See, we often take failure as a personal rejection. It's not. If people don't know the real you, it's not possible for them to reject the real you. Ep 172BYP 172: How I Made the Leap to Become a Full Time Entrepreneur
We continue our current series on making a career pivot. One of my dreams years ago was to leave my day job and make the leap into running my own business full-time (while still providing for my needs). Perhaps you've also wanted to "make the leap", so here are a few recommendations based on my journey. 1. Set hard-and-fast financial goals. 2. Tap into resourcefulness (not just resources). 3. Experiment with various income streams. 4. Create predictable income for your first 3 months. 5. Get mentored by those that have actually done it. Looking to get started? Ep 171BYP 171: 4 Steps to Find Out How Much Money You Need For A Career Pivot
There's a lot of great content out there on making the leap from your day job to start a personal brand business. The one issue I have is that the information shared (at least free, online) is often incomplete, and the one glaring omission involves the most important and pressing question of all: "How much money do I need to make a successful pivot?" In this episode, you'll get my 4-step process -- all from setting the financial goal you want to "leap" from, to how long you should be making money in your side-hustle before you go full time. Ep 170BYP 170: 3 Steps to Finding True Career Fulfillment with Celina Lee
We spend roughly one-third of our lives at work, yet statistics show that an overwhelming number of people are unhappy with their careers. In this episode I interview Celina Lee, host of the Live Your Dream podcast. Celina is a career coach, public speaker, author, and founder of a non-profit called Give One Dream, based in New York City. Celina left a very successful career in investment banking and law to take charge of her life and reinvent herself, and in this episode she shares a bit of her journey along with 3 steps to help you find fulfillment at work. Ep 169BYP 169: The 3 People Standing Between Where You Are and Where You Want To Be
Whether you're looking to reinvent yourself or simply step into more fulfillment, the greatest disharmony stems from standing at the crossroads between 1. who you are and 2. who you want to be. You'll often feel like there's more than one of you. Well, there is. Introducing The Three You's: The Present You encompasses who you are right now. You define yourself by the current work you do, the people you interact with, and the activities you engage in. Hello, mirror. The Public You is closely aligned with The Present You. It's the version that is understood by and made accessible to the people around you. If you've worked your whole life in real estate, it's fair to assume that your neighbors know you as "the real estate guy or gal." The Pending You is the person you're seeking to grow and develop. This is the person waiting in the wings, itching to make his or her debut. This is the person you scream daily self-success affirmations at in the morning shower, and point at in the mirror and shout, "You were made for more! The world is your oyster! You eat dragons for breakfast!" Clearing the pathway for The Pending You to take center stage is vital. You are literally working a transition to present a new "you" to the world. That's why it's so hard. A Few Additional Mindset Shifts: I accept I will never have security. Peace, yes. Security, no. Sometimes you have to move on in order to move up. The credibility isn't in the teaching, the credibility is in the living. Why I've had success in my career: I make ideas happen. It's not about ideas. It's about making ideas happen. Execute. Life is not meant to be a one-player game. Free Resource: Get your copy of my Brand You Blueprint. Ep 168BYP 168: Is "Being Thankful" Keeping You From A Life You Love and Believe In?
"Be thankful for what you have." We've all heard that before, but what if being thankful is actually keeping you from what is best? Please allow me to explain. Life works because of tension. Light and dark. Good and evil. Pleasure and pain. I'm all for encouragement and positive reinforcement, but we can't deny that conflict, tension, and pain are incredible motivators. Without friction between a tire and the road, your car isn't going anywhere. Tension is necessary to move forward. But how do we navigate that when it comes to making a change as big as our residence, relationships, and especially our vocation? In this episode you'll learn about the "Sadistic Selfie" -- something I used to navigate the balance between being grateful for the life I had vs. stepping into the life I really wanted. Ep 167BYP 167: Practicing Gratitude: An Inside Look At How I Do It
You may have heard of the idea of "practicing gratitude" - but how do you actually do it? One of the keys in recent years for me has been journaling. Why? The starting point to having the courage to be who you are, no matter the context, is being comfortable with yourself. You have to learn to spend time alone, to self-reflect, and to become increasingly self-aware. I've journaled for a long time, but in recent years (especially after starting my own business) I realized I needed a system that helped me ask better questions and reflect on my own emotions in a deeper way. Generally, I journal both in the morning and in the evening. In addition to free-writing, I use these two frameworks: Morning Journaling: Write 3 things I'm grateful for. Write 3 things that would make today great (things you can control). Write 3 personal affirmations. To keep things fresh, I use 4 sub-categories when documenting what I'm grateful for: An old relationship or friendship that helped you An opportunity, current or past Something great that happened yesterday Something simple within my sight Evening Journaling: Write 3 amazing things that happened today. Write down 1 thing I could have done to make today better. Ep 166BYP 166: How To Deal With Pain, Loss, and Grief
Experiencing pain, loss, or grief sucks (that's an understatement), yet it's a normal part of life. In this episode I share some hard-learned lessons on moving through pain, loss, and grief. Pain + Reflection = Progress One of the most important capabilities you can develop in life is the ability to reflect on pain rather that react or avoid it. Most people can't reflect on their pain while they are going through it. They focus so much on the pain that they aren't able to consider what is happening, why they ended up in this situation, or how they are processing the pain. Once the pain subsides, they simply move onto something else and never really address the core issues. They medicate, or cope, or distract themselves because it's too painful to go back and address the core issue. Here are 5 things I've learned in the school of hard knocks when it comes to managing and processing pain in order to produce progress: Go to the pain rather than avoiding it. Write a psalm to God. Just do the next right thing. Stop running your tongue over your gums where the tooth used to be. Ask, "What does this make possible?" If you are going through a difficult time right now, please don't hesitate to reach out to friends and family. To isolate yourself is often the worst decision you can make when experiencing tremendous pain, loss, and grief. Ep 165BYP 165: The Tony Robbins Way Of Annual Goal-Setting
In this episode, I share the approach to goal setting that I learned at Tony Robbins' Date with Destiny seminar in West Palm Beach, FL.Date with Destiny was one of the most powerful and important events I've ever attended, and though I can't do the impact justice through a podcast, I felt one of the best things I could share would be Tony's approach to goal-setting.If you're anything like me, goal-setting is a mixed bag. There are a lot of good goal-setting frameworks out there, but they're also easy to get tired of. I found myself in that boat and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this one. The Tony Robbins Guide to Year-End Goal Setting: Set 4 categories: 1. Things & Stuff, 2. Experiences, 3. Treasure, 4. Contributions Write down 1, 3, 5, or 10 next to each goal to represent the years Write down your one-year goals and rank the top 4 Then ask 4 follow up questions for each goal The 4 Follow-Up Questions: Why to you want to accomplish this goal? What is the pain you will feel if you don't accomplish this goal? What is the pleasure you'll get from accomplishing this goal? How will accomplishing this goal contribute to others? Ep 164BYP 164: 5 Life Lessons From 2018 And How To Apply Them To Your Life
It's that special time of the year to look back, reflect on your year, and set your sights towards the next year ahead. I experienced a lot of changes this year: my marriage, major business decisions, and moving for the time being to Florida. Through these many transitions, I've learned: Life is short but the longest thing we'll ever do. Eat good food, spend more time with loved ones, and never pass up a good adventure. You can influence almost anything, you control almost nothing. The greatest awareness is self-awareness. I connect far more with people over our vulnerabilities and vices than I do our victories. Victories are short lived. The battle over our vices and vulnerabilities rages everyday and this is why it's so much easier to connect with others. Relationships are for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. My hope is that these takeaways will help you head into the new year with grace, vision, purpose, and energy. Ep 162BYP 162: Facebook Ads or Google Ads? How To Know Which One Your Business Should Use with Joseph Bojang
Joseph Bojang's kids would say he's the best dancer in the world, but he says his best moves are creating PPC and Facebook ad campaigns that actually help businesses make money. Joseph and I spent a few months in a mastermind group together, and I just knew that one day the time would come when he and I would work together. That time is now. Recently I took on a very large client contract and needed someone to steer the ship right when it came to Facebook and Google advertising. Joseph was my guy, and the results have been nothing short of amazing: a 90% decrease in spend for leads, way higher opt-in rates, and a happier client. I had to bring Joseph onto the podcast to track this journey I'm on with him in real-time. You may not do a lot of online advertising yet, but this episode is here to help you get some initial insight on how these platforms work. A few questions I asked Joseph in this interview: "How can a business or brand know whether Google Adwords or Facebook Ads is best for them?" "What are the elements that make a Google Ads campaign successful?" "When you are running a campaign, how do you determine the budget?" "What's your process of creating search ads?" Ep 161BYP 161: How To Build Recurring Revenue Through Online Evergreen Funnels with Liz Pineda
Liz Pineda helps online entrepreneurs transform their knowledge into recurring revenue by helping them building sales funnels and other high-performing lead generation systems. I first met Liz in 2017 and contracted her to build evergreen funnels around some old products and the results were absolutely amazing. She was able to take a course I created years ago in a niche market and setup a Facebook evergreen funnel from A to Z -- to the tune of $7,000 in sales in the first 45 days. In short, Liz made me a believer in this kind of marketing and I'm so excited to share this interview with you. I can't say enough about her. Here are a few questions I asked Liz: "How to know if your funnel will be profitable before you launch it?" "Where do I even start when building a sales funnel?" "What are the typical lead magnets that are most successful in putting a funnel together?" "When can you expect to make your money back from a funnel?" "Are there any secret 'hacks' that people use when building sales funnels?" "Where is the money really made in a funnel?" Ep 160BYP 160: How To Transition With Honor
Transitions can be some of the most crazy, awkward, and hurtful things in life. It doesn't matter if you're the transitioner, transitionee, or the bystanders; transitions can hurt. How can we do them better? First, we have to make sure we understand what kind of people we're dealing with during transitions. In his book Necessary Endings, Henry Cloud outlines three types of people: wise, foolish, and evil. We must understand that each of these people must be addressed differently: Wise people: use words Foolish people: use limits and consequences (words only make it worse) Evil people: to quote a country song, "guns, money, and lawyers." When it comes to transitions, there are always seem to be too many divorces and not enough weddings. I've always tried to model my transitions following a "wedding" paradigm so I could do it with honor. I'm going to speak from a guy's point of view since well, I'm a guy. Here goes: Son = person wanting to transition Dad = boss, or current role Bride = new job, role, position, season of life This process usually follows 4 steps: Stage 1: "I want to get married." Son turns of age. He feels it's time for him to settle down, maybe get married. He doesn't know who the girl (job, next season of life) is, but he is looking. Essentially the son is saying, "Dad, I think I want to get married. Would you support me?" Stage 2: "I think I've found the girl." Son finds a prospect, isn't sure she's the one but he really digs her. He can't stop thinking about her. "Dad, I think she might be the one. Would you support me?" Dad is supportive, gives advice, provides short and long-term perspective. Stage 3. "We're getting married." Son believes this is the next step. He's done his homework and gotten to know the prospect. The confirmation is there. "Dad, she said yes! She is the one! Would you keep supporting me? Stage 4. "It's wedding time." Weddings are bittersweet; there's a leaving and a cleaving. But it should be celebrated. I hope this episode encourages you to see transitions in a new light.
