Beat jet lag and feel more alive. With entrepreneur Timo Ahopelto #52
Today is Zestology podcast number 52, which means we've been going a year. It's flown by, and been a lot of fun in the process. Thank you for being part of the journey, supporting me along the way, and hopefully getting some inspiration as you listen. Now, ladies and gentlemen, as you know I always like to put myself in the line of fire and test out any new gadgets for extra energy. (I'm such a hero, right.) But this one I was super-sceptical about. It is a crazy in-ear bright light energy headset called The Human Charger. I just wasn't convinced that a gadget that shines lights into my ears would do anything for me. It sends bright light into your ear which is apparently as good as seeing it and especially good for jet lag and winter mornings. The funny thing, despite my total scepticism, is I've been using this for a couple of months and for the mornings I've tried it I've felt a definite extra morning buzz. So in the deep midwinter, I wanted to find out more about the effects of a lack of light in winter, how we can hack our jet lag, and lots more. Hence today's podcast with entrepreneur and creator of this weird headset Timo Ahopelto.

Next time on Zestology: Imagine a gadget that makes you feel more alert, more energised, and helps get over jet-lag. We road test that very gadget, and speak to the inventor next time. Cool eh?

Due to his work with various governments and NGOs, Jordan has spent several years abroad in Europe and the developing world, speaks several languages, and has been kidnapped — twice. 🍊 The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k - Sarah Knight #48
EAre you overextended and overburdened by life? Are you stressed out, anxious, maybe even panic-stricken about your commitments? If so, you might feel quite liberated by The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k I'm with Sarah Knight on the podcast Zestology this week. Sarah was almost 30 years old when she began to realise it was possible to stop caring so much, but was nearly 40 before she figured out how to make it happen. Now she's written a uplifting and enjoyable book about it, and she's on a mission to make all of us care a little bit less. That's me too. I could definitely do with caring a bit less about stuff, and so when I heard about her book we connected on Twitter and set up a fun chat. When you hear what she's got planned for the next stage of her life - inspired by the book - you may well be jel. In today's show, we cover giving up one's job and starting again, planning more low-maintenance weddings and the country Iceland... she doesn't give a monkeys about that either. (Not sure about this one - I love Iceland! :) Nevertheless, it is very liberating not caring so much about stuff. I'm interested, which is why I wanted to know more. And how...

Find an extra 5%, perform better, and learn the scary truth about dry cleaning with health journalist Laura Bond #46
What small little changes could you make to up your game? What simple lifestyle practices could you use right now to increase your performance levels? How could you find an extra 5% and feel awesome every day? Today's Zestology guest is a favourite of mine and a fave on the podcast too, Laura Bond. Laura is a health journalist and health coach, and her techniques are cutting edge and fascinating... vitamin C injections, coffee enemas and infrared saunas are par for the course. Last time we spoke we looked a lot at alternative solutions for better health. This time we look more at the practices you can use to take an already happy and fulfilled life to a new level - finding that extra 5%. Her book and articles are like a guidebook for anyone who wants to find the edge and take their performance levels up a notch. In addition, she's had a crazy 7 or 8 months since we last met, so there was a lot to catch up on. We walked through Soho and recorded as we walked, ending up sitting on a park bench in Golden Square alongside the pigeons, it was, as always with Laura, a lovely and inspiring day. Also coming up, we road-test 'hypertonic drinks' (and accidentally spill them on my trousers - sad times.) Today's podcast is for anyone who's interested in ideas for boosting their energy, vitality and health. Laura's particularly well informed, and her journey since we last spoke is a must listen. Also, 'pets with boobs' make an appearance in today's podcast, and this scary prospect alone should be enough to make you listen. Connecting to nature with endurance athlete and performance coach Anna-Marie Watson #45
An outstanding performance coach and endurance athlete featured this week. This podcast is all about connecting with nature, and getting out into the great outdoors, even when it’s very cold, or very hot. (Note if you are currently enduring a Northern Hemisphere winter, this is a good one for you.) Endurance athlete and performance coach Anna-Marie Watson has an extraordinary love of the great outdoors. She's completed arctic warfare training with the british military, scaled mountains in Nepal, and last year came second female in the Marathon des Sables, ranked as “toughest footrace on earth”. It's basically six days of running across the Sahara Desert. (I know - sounds horrible!) But what can we learn from her experience, and what does she work on with her clients?

The Singing Doctor - with oncologist Dr. Steven Eisenberg #40
A doctor that sings to his patients. I know - it sounds utterly crazy doesn't it. But you can make your own mind up. Just make sure you listen, as he's a true healer, and he's certainly not conventional. He's won awards for the way he looks after his patients. Meditation
Dan Harris on meditation. Does it make you 10% happier? #39 Learn how to tame the voice in your head Reduce stress without losing your edge Find self-help that actually works. I was having a coffee with my mate James a couple of months ago and he recommended me a book called 10% Happier. "I haven't read it yet, so I can't vouch for it", he said, "but someone told me it's good". Hmmm, not exactly the most enthusiastic of endorsements, but for some reason I decided to go and buy the book anyway. A couple of months on, I'm blown away by how good it is, and how inspiring it was for me personally. The story starts with American ABC Good Morning America presenter Dan Harris having a traumatic breakdown, live on air. This experience leads him down the path of trying to find answers, which he eventually does with meditation, the thing that makes him '10% happier'. I messaged Dan straight after I finished the book, and I'm so pleased he's come on Zestology. He's got a great story, and this is undoubtedly one of my all-time favourite Zestology podcasts. If you're a meditation sceptic (or skeptic), listen on. If you are a convert, definitely listen on, as this will provide more answers and some inspiration towards developing your meditative mojo. Breathing techniques for relaxation with yoga teacher Lucy Bruegger #35
If you had a simple breathing technique which helped you relax in stressful situations, get calm when you really needed it and even get to sleep at night, would you use it? Today on Zestology podcast, some awesome stories, great fun, and an in depth look at three specific breathing techniques with Lucy Bruegger. Lucy is a London based yoga teacher, a friend of mine and an awesome teacher with a very broad approach. I love Lucy’s work so much so I went and did some yoga with her in Greece (scroll down to see the amazing spot we went to). She’s had a huge number of different trainings not just in yoga but in all different types of meditative and spiritual practices, including, as you’ll hear, some surprising stories and some crazy experiences such as spending 11 days in a row saying absolutely nothing at all. A silent retreat. (There is no way I could ever do this. I might struggle with 11 minutes.) Rest assured we talk all about that, and in fact dig into some of the most crazy personal development experiences it’s possible to have, followed by 3 breathing techniques for meditation, relaxation, and peace. They’re totally simple and you can try them as you listen. (Unless driving. Then listen after, please.) NLP
How to improve your life with NLP, meditation and hypnosis, recorded live in London with Tony Wrighton #34 The set of skills that can help you be happier, healthier and more persuasive. Millions use NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) every day, and I've trained to the highest level in it. It's the basis for my books, audiobooks and underpins much of what we do on Zestology too. But what the hell is NLP - apart from a strange and slightly confusing name - and how could you use it now? I recently made a conference speech about Zestology, meditation and the power of NLP. So this week's Zestology podcast was recorded live at the NLP Talks event in Central London. My musings were basically a series of stories from my life and how NLP has shaped it, changed it and improved it. The event also included the best heckle I've ever had! Listen out at around 16 minutes on the podcast for this random shout out from the crowd. If you'd like any of the following, then listen on for my personal experiences of NLP. Feel happier or more confident. Inspire others. Get creative (and build a cool sidecar like the one in the pic at the bottom of this blog. Not sure anyone could actually fit in that though...) Improve your presentation skills. Feel motivated towards something coming up in the future. Achieve different goals. Be more persuasive. Improve at sport Get over a phobia. Show notes (for reference - or if you want to skip to the most important bits). Using your powers and skills for good [2:50] The most persuasive word in the world [6:20] Do what works [9:00] Becoming ill in the jungle [10:40] Escaping the screens [13:50] Switching off for 2 hours a day [16:20] Meditation and hypnosis [17:40] The value of sleep health and hygiene [19:45] Blue blocking glasses [21:40] Quantified self [23:10]

Hey Sauerkraut fans! (Silence). Actually I love sauerkraut, and confess I am a bit of a fermented foods geek although I've never plucked up the courage to DIY at home. But whatever you think of it, there is a very good reason for fermenting, and it is not necessarily to introduce some tasty healthy recipes into our diet. Although it does that too. It’s because an increasing body of research suggests that fermented foods can influence not just our gut health, but our brain health as well. The gut-brain link comes up again! In a recent study researchers at UCLA demonstrated that daily consumption of a fermented product containing five different strains of probiotic bacteria actually changed the brain’s emotional response to various stimuli, as measured on an advanced brain imaging thingamijig! In other words, putting more fermented good stuff into your tummy can have a major impact on your high performance levels, and change how your brain works. Jill Ciciarelli is the owner of First Comes Health, a certified holistic health coach, and the author of a fantastic book, Fermented: A four season approach to Paleo probiotic foods. Jill is definitely your go-to expert for all your home-fermenting needs and how it could change your life, your gut and your brain health. Look and feel younger with anti-ageing pioneer Dr. John Salerno #30
Today's Zestology podcast looks at instant natural solutions for more energy. Stuff you can do now. And - fasicinatingly, runs natural anti-ageing clinics. Dr Salerno is an anti-ageing pioneer. He's a well known doctor on TV in the USA, known to viewers of CBS, Fox and a host of other channels. I love his approach - to embrace the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – treating the entire person rather than just symptoms. An awesome approach that kind of embodies what we want to do with Zestology. And check out the list of benefits he promises with his outlook - more energy, ideal weight, clear skin, greater memory, improved digestion, better sleep, less anxiety, and much more. And there is more to Dr. Salerno. After the terrorist bombings of September 11, 2001, he served as the Medical Director for the World Trade Center Landfill, a position that earned him a commendation from then-mayor Rudy Giuliani. Furthermore, he was charged with monitoring the health of public workers assigned to manage the massive landfill, as much of the debris from the World Trade Center was riddled with airborne chemicals, heavy metals, and toxic buildup. Zestology is all about living with energy, vitality and motivation, and today's show features one of the USA's leading doctors on natural solutions, anti-ageing and energy. 6 ways hypnosis could change your life, with author and hypnotherapist Edrina Rush #25
"Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." - George Bernard Shaw Warning: I am about to discuss the H word. That's because one of the quickest ways I've found to create positive change is the aforementioned H word. Hypnosis. Hypnosis gets a bad rap. Maybe that's because people think of people prancing around on a stage pretending to be a chicken when they think of hypnosis. That's cool - I understand that. But hypnosis has so much more to offer. I use it almost every day, and so I wanted to use a Zestology podcast to explore its (potential) benefits for everyone. Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that can bring about new responses, thoughts, attitudes, behaviours or feelings. (Not clucking like a chicken - that's stage hypnosis, which is obvs very different.) Edrina Rush is one of the UK’s top hypnotists and hypnotherapists, so the perfect person to riff with on this subject. We headed to the park on a beautiful summer's day in London to discuss how hypnosis can help. ----------------------------------- JOIN the Zestology MAILING LIST by going to our website (http://www.tonywrighton.com) Connect with Tony on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/tonywrighton If you love the show, please take a moment to rate & review it on iTunes. Slowing down to create more energy with Natural Health practitioner Beverly Meyer #22
Slowing down and calming down to create more energy. It's almost like a contradiction in terms. But it works, and that's why meditation/trance/hypnosis/chillout time is so popular for people. This week's Zestology podcast guest is fascinating, and contains some important themes. One is slowing down a bit to create a huge store of stamina and energy. Amen. We need to talk about this more. All of my audiobooks on iTunes have a similar theme using hypnosis and NLP skills to calm the mind, get into more of an Alpha State, and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. And with my cool guest - blogger, podcaster and Natural Health practitioner Beverley Meyer - I have a similar mind that we can really get going on this subject - slowing off and switching off for more energy and feeling great. Beverley also specialises in the area of nutrition and we tackle some fun foody subjects too. We delve right in and get technical around how good coconut oil is to encourage you to burn fat for fuel (great if you want to tone up and get an energy boost from your food). Then things get a bit crazy, like for instance, have you ever put coconut oil in your tea? Or on your face? And in your food? And if you haven't ever supplemented with Vitamin K2, you may want to after listening to this. When you listen, you'll hear: Living with more energy Coconut oil provides a unique kind of saturated fat that helps your body burn fat for fuel. [5:00] If you struggle with digesting diary, experiment with ghee (or clarified butter) into your diet. [7:00] The human body digests and repairs itself when we’re in a slower, more relaxed state. [13:56] The importance of stamina and a solid pace. [19:48] The importance of Vitamin D and Vitamin K2. [29:20] Easy, everyday tips for vitality The benefits of non-hydrogenated plant fats like macadamia oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. [9:10] Passionflower supplements. [10:15] How to elevate your calves on a wall or a chair to mimic the same benefits of a nap. [21:03] Why food needs to be first. [35:20] Finding motivation The best way to create more energy is to slow down [00:20] Why men and women need to adhere to different nutritional plans [6:00] How GABA works as the “brakes” of your brain and helps you slow down [12:05] The Beta state [13:07] The person that does the least is the most active [20:13] For more information Nutrition and Physical Degeneration Beverly's popular health site ondietandhealth.com
Feeling energetic and hot! With Thyroid Pharmacist Dr. Izabella Wentz #21
Did you know that taking a simple sauna twice a week could spark a complete change in your energy levels? (Hence the title of this blog.) This just one of the interesting, unusual and crazy ideas in today's Zestology Podcast. Interested in making some small changes for big results? Listen/read on. My guest is someone with a wide amount of expertise in this area. Dr Izabella Wentz has written a hugely popular and well received book on Hashimotos. (Never heard of Hashimotos? It turns out that Hashimotos is really much more common than anyone thought so we look at that at the start of the show). We also dive straight in general health improvements and yes, sauna therapy. We go into this into a bit of depth, including the uh, sauna incident that left Dr Wentz rather surprised and shocked. And surprise surprise, it’s a regular theme, we look at nutrition and health and the role that has to play in your overall wellbeing and energy levels. It’s one of those shows where we go deep, especially at the start, and I love that. There's some real depth in this podcast. I’m honoured to have a real expert in her field on, so let’s speak to Thyroid Pharmacist, Dr Izabella Wentz. ----------------------------------- JOIN the Zestology MAILING LIST by going to our website (http://www.tonywrighton.com) Connect with Tony on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/tonywrighton If you love the show, please take a moment to rate & review it on iTunes.
