How adventure can help us make better decisions with explorer Derek Loudermilk #84

Derek Loudermilk has been up to some serious adventures (scroll down for pics). And that's cool, because he hosts The Art of Adventure podcast. In fact I was on Derek's podcast previously... episode 43 if you want to check that out. Focus
How to improve your focus with leading performance coach Karl Morris #83 According to scientists, we are surrounded by so much technology these days, even a goldfish can now focus on something for longer than a human. Researchers surveyed 2,000 participants, and the results showed the average human attention span has fallen from 12 seconds in 2000, or around the time the mobile revolution began, to eight seconds. Goldfish, meanwhile, are believed to have an attention span of nine seconds. Yeh, we need to do something about this. When I spoke to my friend Karl Morris on Zestology a while back, it got a big response. He's a leading performance coach in the world of sport and kind of a big deal (though he'd be far too modest to admit that himself). Last time we looked at designing a good day, and asked the question, 'What does a good day look like'. So we've gone in for more good days, more staying in the present and more what Karl calls Neutral Thinking. It all adds up to improving your focus and attention. How will this podcast help you? You'll get tips on staying in the moment, and improving your attention and focus. And we look at mindset too. Not positive thinking (which can be unrealistic), not negative thinking (which is just meh), but Neutral Thinking, which is more based on being optimistic but realistic at the same time. This podcast is brought to you by Bulletproof Coffee and supplements. Bulletproof is for anyone that wants to perform better, and features supplements and products based on 20 years of mind and body performance research. I use Bulletproof - all the time - and I've sorted a 10% discount for Zestology listeners. Simply use the code ZESTOLOGY at checkout.

Honestly Healthy's Natasha Corrett on tasty food and an exciting life #82
Natasha Corrett is one of the UK's best known chefs and healthy eaters. She's got a ridic amount of followers on Insta/Facebook/Twitter etc, but despite all the press she's done and her huge profile, when she met me, it was the first podcast interview she's ever done. And it was a good one too - very revealing. I came with at least two things that I'm changing straightaway. One of them, randomly, doesn't involve cooking but high-tech fire alarms. Nice one Natasha and thank you. When you listen to the podcast, you'll also hear Natasha and I talking about her, Jamie Oliver, and a very large mushroom. Click here to see the outrageous shroom pic.

Triumph over (extreme) adversity with actress Gemma Oaten #81
Coming up: one of the most emotional stories I've had on Zestology. Gemma Oaten is a well-known actress here in the UK, rising to fame on Emmerdale. (Try explaining the appeal of Emmerdale to an American!) Behind her rise though was an almost unbelievable tale of triumph over adversity. She has had it rough. Gemma was only 10 when she first became ill after negative comments at school affected her self esteem. And from there it was a downhill spiral into an eating disorder. Today on Zestology, Gemma's story of how she nearly lost it all and before getting back to full health and fulfilling her dreams.

Sleep
The Sleep Doctor - with Dr. Michael Breus #80 How do you sleep? I thought I knew most of the important stuff about sleep, morning routines, and caffeine, but I just interviewed Dr. Oz's sleep doctor specialist, Dr Michael Breus, and he told me some stuff that blew my mind. I'm actually writing this with a cup of coffee by my side, and I've changed my morning routine (and coffee routine) because of the information I learnt from Dr. Breus. He's seriously well qualified. In addition to his private practice where he treats athletes, celebrities, and the like, he also "trains other sleep doctors and consults with major airlines, hotel chains, and retailers to provide the optimum sleep experience for their customers." So if you're interested in improving your sleep, and therefore performance and energy levels - listen to today's Zestology.

The special light-based alarm clock Sascha uses to help him wake up in the morning. Preparation is key, without that he feels lost. His silver medals mean more to him than gold. (Why??) The Queen made a very embarrassing gaffe the first time Sascha met her. (Yes, he's met her multiple times...) If you like to get motivated by the best, then do listen to today's podcast... Sascha is a very straightforward guy with so much to inspire us with.

Dealing with life's ups and downs. With TV personality and 80s pop star Sinitta #76
ESometimes on my podcast Zestology I get very specific - into the nitty gritty of supplements, lifestyle practices and the science of feeling good. And then sometimes, I like to meet and pick the brains of interesting, successful and prominent people with a damn good story to tell. Roll on this week - yep this pic is me hanging out with 80s pop sensation Sinitta. Sinitta has 14 international hit singles. I was basically singing along to her music in the 80s. She is a mentor on The X Factor and she now makes her own fitness videos. But one of the best moments in our chat - I thought - was when she told the long and yes, maybe even a bit painful story of how she realised she "wasn't famous any more", and how she dealt with some serious ups and downs.

EWhy is it important to take risks, and how can we take more risks and get outside our comfort zone? Science journalist and writer Kayt Sukel has no problem tackling interesting (and often taboo) subjects spanning love, sex, neuroscience, travel and politics. In fact, she's so dedicated to the cause that in the writing of her last book, she had an orgasm in an MRI scanner for a Guardian article. (I won't put the link, I'm sure you can google that one yourself). Her work has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the New Scientist, USA Today, the Washington Post and many others. And now, she's tackling risk.

Iceman Wim Hof on tapping into the power of mind and body #72
EHave you heard of dutch daredevil "The Iceman", Wim Hof, yet? If not, you have a treat in store in this week's podcast. I first saw him speak in California last year. This guy is incredible. He holds 20 world records, including a world record for longest ice bath. Wim has shown what the human body is capable of once you find the flow within your physical and mental state. He describes his ability to withstand extreme cold temperatures as being able to "turn his own thermostat up" by using his mind through yoga. He climbed to 6.7 kilometres (22,000 ft) altitude at Mount Everest wearing nothing but shorts and shoes. I know! And he completed a full marathon above the arctic circle in Finland, in temperatures close to −20 °C (−4 °F). Dressed in nothing but shorts, Hof finished in 5 hours and 25 minutes. Listen to today's podcast for the opportunity to reach out and do more than what you thought you were capable of. Through the right training and exercises, you can strengthen your inner nature and prevent disease.

Sorting out back pain and living healthily with chiropractor and podcast host Dr. Michelle Robin #71
Put the painkillers down, and listen to Zestology. Dr Michelle Robin is one of the world's top chiropractors and a relevant guest for me. In this podcast, we start off with some general chat - but if you want to get straight to the good stuff on backs, sleep position and so forth, feel free to skip straight to that bit. Back pain is something I have a specific interest in. That's because every once in a while, mine hurts. Once Dr. Michelle gets going, the unbelievable in-depth knowledge she has offers some practical solutions to anyone living in pain or wanting more energy. Dr Michelle Robin is a fascinating expert in this area. She is a 'wellness chiropractor'. She says wellness because she doesn't just want to make sure your spine is in alignment. She makes a lot of sense. Enjoy. As I say, we start on general stuff, and then go more in depth. You may find that bit more useful. Tony.

The two most important words in the world with entrepreneur and coach Laura Coe #70
EUh, are the two most important words in the world? Laura Coe is an entrepreneur, podcast host, philosophy lover and certified life coach. She's a brilliant podcast guest, because she told me in simple terms how two little words could change our lives. She had a high-powered corporate career, and when I say high-powered, she was right at the top. But then something dramatic happened, and everything changed. Our topic this week - expressing what you really want in life, and then getting it. (There's a clue as to what those two words are in here.) When you speak your truth, personal freedom, a sense of internal calm, a confidence you always wanted, but couldn't find, will start to appear. "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." – Oscar Wilde. Oh, and for those two little words, listen on...
