Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Bayern Munich 1-1 Gladbach (Hinrunde)
Bayern Munich have been stopped. The juggernaut is slain. All rejoice, the Bundesliga is now free from tyranny. Okay, maybe not. But it is true that Gladbach have not lost to Bayern. And given the kind of performances we’ve been enjoying lately, that is quite an achievement. Here are our talking points from the game:A very short mental breakdown to preface the pod. Why Yann Sommer deserves the credit for this result. A quick recap of what happened in the game. Could Robert Lewandowski have changed this result? Did Nagelsmann subbing on Matthijs de Ligt mean he needs a CF? Why Julian Nagelsmann’s tactics cannot be blamed for this result. The referee was horrible. That is all. Why Thomas Muller remains one of the most effective players on the pitch, despite a lack of recent goals/assists. Sadio Mane’s constant offsides — why does it keep happening? How a draw against Gladbach allows us to make adjustments for the upcoming Champions League table. Why we can’t take too many negatives from this game because of Gladbach are our bogey team. Here are our talking points from the draw:The trouble with not getting an English Premier League team in the draw this season. How the FC Barcelona draw concerns us this season. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E7: Nagelsmann keeping lineups consistent at Bayern Munich; judging when rotations will be key; commentary on the NYT piece; and more!
With their 2-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich continued their winning start to the season, winning their second match in the Bundesliga and third on the bounce if you count the DFL-Supercup as a competitive fixture. In all three of the aforementioned matches, Julian Nagelsmann has used the exact same starting lineup of Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Lucas Hernandez, Dayot Upamecano, Benjamin Pavard, Marcel Sabitzer, Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Muller, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Sadio Mane. So far, it’s worked wonders, and while there have been some different second half changes on all of those occasions, Nagelsmann’s subs have also followed a similar pattern. As the saying goes, “if it a’int broke, don't fix it.” Nagelsmann has seemingly adopted this idea for his lineup selections, but as English Weeks approach for Bayern, he’ll certainly have to start to make some changes to avoid running a higher risk of injuries and fatigue. It will also be his job to balance the squad and make sure he does best to keep all of his players happy - even the ones that might not be playing as much as they’d like to. Nagelsmann has a luxury in depth, and it’s up to him to find the right ways to use it.A recent New York Times piece also shed some light on the different arguments posed surrounding a lack of interest in the Bundesliga due to Bayern’s long-running dominance domestically. With that, there’s significantly less viewership in the league as a whole than, say, the English Premier League. Will there every be a way to change this trend? In this Flagship episode of the podcast, Tom and Teddy discuss:Nagelsmann’s consistent starting XIWhen there will be a need for rotationsLeroy Sane and Tanguy Nianzou’s transfer rumors/linksNagelsmann keeping everyone in the squad happyHow results have fared elsewhere in the BundesligaDo our direct rivals make us winning the league much easier? Our thoughts on the NYT piece and if the Bundesliga will ever garner more interest from abroad.Learn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E6: Thoughts on Bayern’s thumping victory at Frankfurt; talking Bayern post-Lewy; analyzing the 4-triple-2 formation; and more!
Bayern Munich looks very different from the side we have been used to seeing, and in a good way. Of course, the 6-1 thumping of Frankfurt on Friday was only the first game of the season, but it showed a lot of promise for the rest of the season and gave us a glimpse of Nagelsmann’s strategies for this side, and the plans he wishes to implement moving forward. The 4-2-2-2 is just one of many formations Nagelsmann can deploy this season, but it certainly seems to be one that he favors. He also has the right personnel to execute it to perfection, so we might be seeing a lot more of the same in upcoming fixtures. With the squad super stacked everywhere and spirits looking high, one can’t help but speculate whether this is going to be another one of those historic seasons (in a good way, of course). But yeah, too soon to say anything. All that being said, Tom and Schnitzel sit down in this edition of the flagship show to discuss many positives (positivity is good :)) and some minor concerns, while also postulating to guess how the rest of the season could pan out. Here are the major talking points discussed in this episode:Bayern’s dominant performance against FrankfurtHow Chuck steals the spotlight all the time, leaving the rest of us poor folks hangingThe 4-triple-2 and what it brings to the tableNagelsmann’s plans for the rest of the seasonTom’s insufferable EPL talk and Schnitzel trying hard to bring him back on trackSané transfer rumoursThrowing shade at INNN and Teddy (once again)A look at the other fixtures in the BuLi and early predictions for the rest of the seasonLearn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Eintracht Frankfurt 1-6 Bayern Munich (Hinrunde)
Bayern Munich opened the 2022/23 Bundesliga season with a ruthless battering of Eintracht Frankfurt, a team that regularly gets the better of the Bavarians and won the Europa League just last season. Julian Nagelsmann’s side ran rampant in a game which saw the visitors up 5-0 within the first half, in a performance which somehow managed to shock the Eagles faithful into a stunned silence. Things look good right now. Here are our talking points from the game:Our thoughts on the 4-2-2-2 and whether it looks like a plausible way for Bayern Munich to move forward in a post-Lewandowski era. How Sadio Mane, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller, and Jamal Musiala work together to make an amazing front four system. What the current midfield setup offers to the team in terms of passing. Why Eintracht seemed practically bewildered by Bayern’s system in the first half, and the changes in the second. How Serge Gnabry has seen an incredible resurgence in form with the help of Sadio Mane. Why Jamal Musiala has changed the entire shape of Bayern’s offense. Dayot Upamecano’s resurgence and his excellent performances as of late. Concerns over pressing and defensive lapses in the side. Potential tests in the future, including games in the Champions League group stage. A final note on the strange fatigue gripping the squad at the 60th minute of every game. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E4: Reacting to Bayern Munich’s preseason friendlies and the Mathys Tel transfer news
It was a rather short preseason for Bayern Munich having only had the chance to play two friendlies in the United States against DC United and then Manchester City. There was a bit of gap in terms of quality of the opponents, but Julian Nagelsmann was able to use the opportunities to get a good look at some different players in the squad, our new signings, and some different formations. Bayern now has less than a week until the competitive fixtures start with a trip to RB Leipzig for the DFL-Supercup on Saturday.Bayern looked like they were in the mood to score for fun, beating DC United by a scoreline of 6-2 with goals from Sadio Mane, Marcel Sabitzer, Serge Gnabry, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Thomas MUller, but they were unable to find the back of the net against Pep Guardiola’s Man City in Green Bay. Gnabry had a goal ruled out for offside, but the replay suggested Joao Cancelo was actually keeping Muller on in the buildup. It’s now also expected that Stade Renne’s Mathys Tel will become one of Bayern’s last signings of this summer window, as it looks like Bayern has agreed upon approximately 30-million Euros to sign the young striker. While he’s certainly no Robert Lewandowski, Nagelsmann has said that he does feel the youngster can become a striker that’s good for nearly 40 goals in a season once he’s had time to develop. In this episode of the Flagship show, Tom and Teddy discuss:Grading Bayern’s preseason overallThe win over DC UnitedThe loss to Manchester CityPlayers that impressed us during the preseason matchesThings we didn’t like from the two matchesNagelsmann formation choicesPredicting how productive of a signing Mathys Tel will beLearn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E3: How Robert Lewandowski leaving affects Bayern Munich (Transfers, tactics, and expectations)
So it happened. Bayern Munich have sold Robert Lewandowski to FC Barcelona for a fee of around €45m guaranteed plus €5m in bonuses. With his departure, Bayern lose a striker who has scored 50+ goals a season for three seasons in a row. Without him, Julian Nagelsmann will have to find new solutions for the attack, while the transfer fee raises money to reinvest into the squad.Since this is a major discussion, we got three people together for only our second-ever three-person podcast. In this episode, INNN, Tom, and Schnitzel discuss:Our initial impressions on Lewandowski leaving the club. Can the striker pairing of Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry make up for the loss of Lewy’s goals? The problems with the rumored 3-5-2 formation planned by Julian Nagelsmann.Schnitzel suggests a different formation that gives INNN conniptions. How Bayern can still operate a 4-2-3-1 with Sadio Mane as a lone striker.INNN’s take: Why the defense needs to be the focus for the upcoming season.Massive argument about formation fluidity and how to use Thomas Muller. What transfers do Bayern Munich have left in the window? Which transfers are still likely? Why Cristiano Ronaldo could still end up coming to Bayern.Closing thoughts — what are the expectations for Julian Nagelsmann in the upcoming season? Expected positions in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and the Champions League. If you guys like what you hear, PLEASE vote for us on the World Soccer Talk — Best Club Podcast award. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E2: Should Matthijs de Ligt become Bayern Munich’s record signing + Omar Richards’ departure
Matthijs de Ligt wants to join Bayern Munich - that point has been clear by the player and his representatives. At this point, Bayern just has to negotiate an appropriate transfer fee with Juventus for the defender, but it is understood that the Serie A club want between 80 and 90 million euros for him. With that said, there is a VERY real possibility that de Ligt could become Bayern’s record transfer signing if a move does, in fact, materialize. In this episode of the BPW Flagship show, Tom and Fergus discuss:If De Ligt is worth becoming Bayern’s record signing. How would De Ligt fit in Bayern’s back line in a back four system.Would he bring enough to shore up Bayern’s defense.Omar Richards departing to Nottingham Forest. How do we backup Alphonso Davies now that O. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E1: Should Bayern Munich sign Cristiano Ronaldo? + Nagelsmann’s 4-3-3 analyzed
July is here, and Bayern Munich have once again been linked with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar almost certainly wants to leave Manchester United this summer, and some parts of the fanbase think that Bayern should be happy to oblige. But is that a good idea? Meanwhile, there have been reports in the past week that Julian Nagelsmann wants to transition his team into a 4-3-3 formation for the upcoming season. With players already arriving for preseason, the coach’s tactical choices are once again under scrutiny. In this episode, INNN and Tom discuss:The big Ronaldo news — is it a plausible transfer for Bayern Munich? What does CR7 bring to Bayern and the Bundesliga? And what does the club offer him?Is signing Cristiano Ronaldo a two-edged sword? Does his popularity bring unwanted attention?Concerns about CR7’s presence the dressing room under an inexperienced coach in Julian Nagelsmann. How would Ronaldo fit into a Bayern Munich team? Would he just slot in for Robert Lewandowski, or play a different role?Based on the last point, how viable would a 4-3-3 be at Bayern? The merits and problems with the 4-3-3, from personnel to tactics. How Thomas Muller’s role in the 4-3-3 formation changes everything about it.Would moving Sadio Mane to a false-9 role enable the 4-3-3 to work properly?Closing thoughts. As always, thanks for your support and let us know what you think!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. For the first time ever, BFW is doing a three-person show! However, while the Robert Lewandowski saga was put on the backburner for a bit, this does not mean that that topic is by any means over. Both Mané and Lewandowski are discussions on today’s podcast which cover the following topics:Mané’s transfer can almost be regarded as a “status” transfer in that Bayern remains a hugely attractive destination.Robert Lewandowski might be forced to stay regardless of how he feels.Sasa Kalajdzic rumors persist; this might mean that Bayern might believe that there is a chance that Lewandowski will leave.Fans have short memories. Bavarian Podcast Works: Special Edition — Sadio Mane joins from Liverpool FC! (Reaction)
Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Sadio Mane! The Liverpool FC winger joins on a deal worth €32m + €9m in add-ons, which looks like a great deal given the current state of the market. In this special edition podcast, INNN and Fergus discuss the following:Our first reactions to the Sadio Mane transfer — are we excited or cautiously optimistic?Does Bayern Munich need to sell either Robert Lewandowski or Serge Gnabry to afford their massive spending this summer?Could the Bayern board have done better with the money spent on Mane? Moving onto the actual positives (for a change) — does Mane’s arrival mean Leroy Sane is sent to the bench? How the player’s presence affects both the dressing room and mood of the fanbase overall. Bavarian Podcast Works S4E35: Reacting to Bayern Munich’s trio of summer signings thus far and looking back at Germany’s Nations League campaign
We’ve reached a point where there’s a bit of a lull in competitive matches for both club and international football, but there’s been plenty of news to follow in terms of Bayern Munich’s activity in the transfer market. They’ve already secured the signing of both Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch from AFC Ajax while Sadio Mane’s move from Liverpool is a done deal pending his medical later on this week. The trio of players have certainly been positive additions to Julian Nagelsmann’s squad, though we still don’t know what the near-term futures hold for both Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.Germany also had a slew (four to be exact) of UEFA Nations League matches that gave Hansi Flick a chance to make some adjustments to his squad and get a good look at some players that he hasn’t had the chance to do so for in recent international breaks. They finished their slate of matches with a draw to Italy, a draw with England, a draw with Hungary and then an emphatic win over Italy to close out that round of fixtures. In this episode of Bavarian Podcast Works, Tom and Teddy discuss:The arrival of Noussair MazraouiThe arrival of Ryan GravenberchThe anticipated arrival of Sadio ManeHow the three signings will fit into Nagelsmann’s systemsHow often we think the signings will playBayern’s added depthGermany’s results in the Nations League matchesGermany’s future Nations League matches in September ahead of the World CupLearn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works S4E34: Talking points from Germany’s draw to Italy + Bayern Munich and Serge Gnabry’s confusing standoff
Welcome back! It’s been a week since our last podcast and a huge chunk of the Bayern Munich squad is back in the spot with Germany finally back in action for the UEFA Nations League. And why did he reject it?Potential reasons Gnabry might have for leaving Bayern Munich, and why they don’t make any kind of sense. How Bayern needs to deal with this entire mess.As always, thanks for your support and let us know what you think!Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany.
