It’s been another week of relentless transfer rumors, Bayern Munich are no closer to signing Harry Kane but significantly closer to giving Daniel Levy a stroke. There’s honestly so many we forgot a few while recording. Is Kyle Walker a good option for Bayern? Why Thomas Tuchel doesn’t seem to have as much “control” as the media says. Bavarian Podcast Works S5E51: Reviewing the Laimer & Guerreiro signings, previewing Bayern Munich’s back line, and looking ahead to further transfer business
Even without a current sporting director in the wake of Hasan Salihamidzic getting fired alongside Oliver Kahn, Bayern Munich has already made two summer signings in Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig and Raphael Guerreiro from Borussia Dortmund. The latter was essentially completed during the winter time, but it’s now official and Thomas Tuchel still wants to bring in Kim Min-jae from SSC Napoli since Lucas Hernandez will be leaving for Paris Saint-Germain as well as a top-class striker. Plenty of names have been linked with Bayern as far as who their new striker could be including Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, Randal Kolo Muani and Duscan Vlahovic, but the clock is ticking for Tuchel and Bayern. It will be a tough season if they once again don’t have a clear-cut, number 9 striker, and from the offset, Tuchel has identified this as a point of emphasis for this summer’s transfer window. By stark contrast, given the fact that Declan Rice has chosen to stay in the Premier League by virtue of joining either Arsenal or Manchester City, Tuchel is no longer prioritizing the signature of a number 6, defensive midfielder. There’s also been reports that Bayern is set to re-hire former goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic, who was fired by Julian Nagelsmann, Kahn, Brazzo and the rest of Bayern’s board just days after Yann Sommer had begun training with the club after joining from Borussia Monchengladbach. His return won’t spell good news for Alexander Nubel, who’s previously vented his frustration for what he referred to as favoritism from Tapalovic towards Manuel Neuer in training sessions. In this flagship episode of Bavarian Podcast Works, Tom and Rayyan (known on the site as CCyler) discuss: The two signings; Laimer & Guerreiro Can Laimer play as a number 6, or is that not his strong suit? Where Guerreiro will best fit in the squad, tactically speaking Kim Min-jae’s expected arrival from SSC Napoli to replace Lucas Hernandez Will Tuchel start to use a back three system more often? Bayern’s plethora of center-backs vs. wide backs All of the strikers linked with Bayern Realistic percentage chances Harry Kane will leave Tottenham for Bayern Bayern’s goalkeeping situation with Tapalovic set to return Learn more about your ad choices. Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Podcast Season 2, Episode 50 — Wrapping up Germany’s performance and what the XI could look like for the Euros; Bayern Munich’s latest transfer news; and MORE!
It has been a wild week at BFW. Germany is floundering. Bayern Munich looks like it will struggle to get world class, impact players for the key positions that it needs. Most of us are perplexed at the thought of how any of this will work out, but hey, if talking about this helps us all sort through things, let’s get to it with the latest episode of the Weekend Warm-up Podcast: Lamenting the state of the German national team, Hansi Flick’s failures, and what a starting XI might look like for the Euro 2024 — and why the best lineup probably won’t ever get featured. Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Germany 0-2 Colombia (International Friendly — RANT EDITION)
When does Bayern Munich re-start again? That was...terrible. Germany looked aimless and lacked energy and got the result that it deserved in a 2-0 loss to Colombia. The game looked like it mattered to the Colombians, while the Germans ambled around hoping that something good would happen (Hint: Nothing good happened). Let’s find out if you are as bitter as me! As Stringer Bell once told Brother Mouzone and Omar Little, let’s “get on with it”: A look at the starting lineup and a breakdown of the scoring. Where is the pride on this German team? Colombia was energetic, brash, and talking junk...and Germany withered under the stress of it all. Nothing is good...not the attack, nor the midfield, nor the defense. They are all terrible right now. Hansi Flick is assuredly in some danger. Where does it go from here? And why the players need to take some heat as well. S5 Ep 50Bavarian Podcast Works S5E50: Should Germany sack Hansi Flick? + Bayern Munich missing out on (and landing) transfer targets
With all the Bayern Munich action confined to the transfer window for now, it’s time to shift gears and talk a little bit more about Germany and their recent failures on the pitch. Hansi Flick is currently reeling from a couple of dismal results vs Ukraine and Poland which has everyone reconsidering the idea of having him coach at the Euros. On the Bayern end of things, Napoli’s Kim Min-jae is set to become the club’s latest defender signing while Kai Havertz slips out of the bosses hands and into the arms of Chelsea. Lots to talk about right now. Meanwhile, Bavarian Podcast Works has been nominated for the 2023 edition of the World Soccer Talk — Best Club Podcast Award. Click on that link and go vote for us!In this episode, INNN and Chuck talk about the following: Is Hansi Flick on the chopping block at the German national team? Should he be? Is it just a question of talent? Or could the coach do better? INNN chimes in with some Thomas Muller propaganda (because why not?). Julian Nagelsmann as Germany coach — WHAT IF? Is Hansi Flick mishandling Niklas Sule? Would you be surprised if Hansi Flick were sacked at this stage? Shifting gears to the transfer talk — is Kim Min-jae a good transfer for Bayern Munich? Kyle Walker to Bayern — is that a good idea? Why Thomas Tuchel maybe shouldn’t be given too many options on the transfer market. Why is Bayern Munich so hesitant to secure a striker? Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Poland 1-0 Germany (International Friendly)
If the confidence of the Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund personnel in the Germany team wasn’t already low considering how the Bundesliga ended, Germany’s latest result did them no favors. In this podcast, Rayyan and Samrin discuss: The gap between Thilo Kehrer and Jonas Hofmann in the first half Rayyan’s deeper look at Germany’s setup today How Joshua Kimmich is impacted when Germany’s back three is narrow Whether Kimmich fits better in a back three or back four What Kimmich’s best position is for Germany Some headscratchers such as Kai Havertz up front Another headscratcher in Niklas Füllkrug’s exclusion from the start Some regrets from the World Cup, especially in line-up decisions Is Hansi Flick’s job safe? What does Thilo Kehrer add to this team? Are there any answers to Germany’s fullback problems? The confusion in midfield with a focus on Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and later, Leroy Sané Is Julian Nagelsmann an option for Germany? Even Alphonso Davies’ contract extension went from “sure thing” to “uh-oh.” What can the Bavarians do...let’s look at the options — and there are plenty of good ones at center-back (maybe even some who can unseat Upamecano or De Ligt). Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Germany 3-3 Ukraine (Friendly)
Well, that was close. Germany narrowly avoid defeat to the mighty Ukraine despite playing at home and going up 1-0 early in the game. Hansi Flick tested out a back three and it reaped dividends, only not for the team that it was intended to. Germany seem like they have a million problems and a lot of them will be familiar to fans of Bayern Munich, but also brand new ones that are unique to the international setup. Here are our talking points from the game: The back three doesn’t work — please stop using it, Hansi. Did Joshua Kimmich use Lewandowski’s stutter-step penalty technique? The horrible state of the German fullback roster. Should Kimmich be sent back to the flanks? A concerning lack of chances created by the German attack. The missing factor is left as an exercise for the listener. Leon Goretzka is being unfairly maligned for his performance. Does Hansi Flick see Kai Havertz as an alternative to Niclas Fullkrug at striker? You cannot trust a Borussia Dortmund player on the national team. A suggestion for what kind of lineup Germany should use at the Euros. Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. Bavarian Podcast Works: Weekend Warm-up Podcast Season 2, Episode 47 — Assessing the fallout from Bayern Munich’s title win; Transfer updates on Vlahović, Rice, Pavard, Hernandez, Davies, & MORE!
What a long, strange trip it’s been. Bayern Munich somehow won its 11th consecutive Bundesliga championship as Borussia Dortmund suffered through a massive collapse — and somehow that was one of the least crazy stories of the week. Admittedly, Bayern Munich fans have had a lot to process with everything, so what better way to do it than with the Weekend Warm-up Podcast and at Bavarian Football Works. S5 Ep 47Bavarian Podcast Works S5E47: Bayern Munich win the league, then sack Kahn and Brazzo (Instant reaction + analysis)
Well who saw that coming? We were hoping for it, but didn’t expect Bayern Munich to deliver in this manner. When it comes to the league, Borussia Dortmund bottled it at the last minute versus Mainz, basically handing us the title — BUT Bayern still had to get the job done versus Koln and they did. It was a touch and go thing, but thank god (and maybe Brazzo) for Jamal Musiala. Anyway ...In this episode, INNN and Fergus talk about the following: Bayern Munich were completely unconvincing versus Koln and that’s unacceptable. Talking about the ruthless sacking of Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic by Bayern. Could Bayern have an FC Barcelona moment someday? The pros and cons of bringing back Rummenigge and Hoeness. Is it a mistake to not bring in a new sporting director for the summer? Wait, why was Oliver Kahn FORBIDDEN from attending the Koln game? What is going at this club? How is history going to remember Oliver Kahn and Brazzo? A quick aside — would Matthias Sammer come back as sporting director? The deep concern about the names rumored as potential future sporting directors. Dark clouds hovering over the long term future of FC Bayern Munich. Will the sacking of Brazzo spark concerns in players like Kimmich, Musiala, and Alphonso Davies? What a journey this season has been for Bayern Munich. Here we are, the final Preview Show of the season — and a match that means something, but could end up meaning nothing at all. Borussia Dortmund’s result against Mainz 05 will determine whether or not the Bavarians have any shot of being the league winner. Well, that was fun while it lasted. Bayern Munich have dropped points to RB Leipzig in shameful fashion, handing the lead in the Bundesliga back to Borussia Dortmund. This is a game that could decide the title race. Here are our talking points ahead of the game: Who’s in and who’s out in the lineup? Thomas Muller should obviously start. The Bundesliga title race isn’t over, but it feels rather ... lacking. In this episode, INNN and Marcus talk about the following: Thomas Tuchel’s latest lineup, and his decisions therein. S5 Ep 42Bavarian Podcast Works S5E42: Should the Bayern Munich board resign? + Serious doubts about Thomas Tuchel
So in about three weeks, Bayern Munich have been knocked out of both competitions and are no longer leaders in the Bundesliga. The football is dire and coach Thomas Tuchel seems to lack any answers. The majority of the questions, however, will be directed at the men at the top — Oliver Kahn, Herbert Hainer, and Hasan Salihamidzic. In this episode, INNN and Fergus talk about the following: Is it time for the Bayern Munich board to go? Who is the #1 culprit behind the current state of affairs? The curious case of Hasan Salihamidzic and his work as a sporting director. Oliver Kahn’s lack of vision, his role in sacking Julian Nagelsmann, and the consequences. What does Herbert Hainer even DO? The lingering influence of Uli Hoeness — how much power does the current board actually have? How the absence of Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is felt at all levels. A final word on whether the board should stay or go. Is Thomas Tuchel still the right guy for the job? Doubts about the coach’s judgement — lineups, tactics, player selection. What kind of transfers should Tuchel be given? The absurd scenario: Could Julian Nagelsmann ... return to Bayern Munich? Are there any alternatives to Tuchel? Putting the season into perspective. Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Rant — Mainz 3-1 Bayern Munich (Explicit)
EWell that’s it, Bayern Munich are cooked. The Bundesliga title is sliding out of reach, and honestly should’ve been well out of reach if any competent challenger existed in this league. What an absolute shambles. This isn’t time to mince words. The situation is really dire. Here are our talking points from the game: Despair. Sadness. Swearing. How Thomas Tuchel has completely abandoned the simplicity we saw versus Borussia Dortmund. Why can’t Bayern Munich score the second goal? The demise of the “can-opener”. How the Thomas Tuchel DNA is already becoming visible at Bayern, and it’s not good. Thomas Tuchel doesn’t seem to know the strengths of his squad. Another case of awful substitutions — why sub Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich? Calling on the board to resign on the back of this gamble, and many other mistakes. Isn’t the squad good enough to beat Mainz? How Thomas Tuchel needs to fix this. Let’s stop remixing failed experiments — no more back threes especially. Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Manchester City 3-0 Bayern Munich (Champions League QF)
Well that’s it then. Bayern Munich are out of the UEFA Champions League. Since winning the treble in 2020, the quarter finals seem like they’ve become an impassible wall that this squad cannot get past. Manchester City showed this group of players a different level of football as they overwhelmed possibly the most mediocre Bayern Munich team we’ve seen in years. The second leg is reduced to a formality now. Here are our talking points from the game: The horrible decision to bench Thomas Muller in a game this big. Dayot Upamecano’s huge mistake compared to the season he’s been having. The abject performance of the offense. Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman — all not good enough. “Captain” Joshua Kimmich’s complete lack of leadership on the big stage. INNN’s conspiracy theory about Kimmich. How much blame does the board bear for this elimination? Shouldn’t this loss also come back on Thomas Tuchel? S5 Ep 40Bavarian Podcast Works S5E40: A gloomy preview of Man City vs Bayern Munich + Is Sadio Mane a total flop? + The striker problem discussed
There’s never a dull moment at Bayern Munich (unless you watched the first half of Saturday’s game versus Freiburg). This week could be crucial for the outcome of the entire season as the club gear up to face Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter finals. After the coaching shakeup and the elimination from the Pokal last week, confidence seems to be at an all time low at the BFW podcasting department. In this episode, INNN and Samrin talk about the following: Establishing the tone (not positive) for the rest of the podcast. How should Thomas Tuchel line up his team against Manchester City? Which duels will be key for Bayern vs City? Davies, Haaland, Upa, etc. An outside-the-box solution to the striker problem due to Choupo’s absence. How will Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka set up versus Rodri, Gundogan, and the like? Why a counterattacking approach could be the best and worst option for Bayern Munich. Why starting Joao Cancelo against his former team may not be the best idea. Finally talking about Sadio Mane and the source of his problems at Bayern. Harsh criticism of the board’s transfer policy and their “support” of Julian Nagelsmann. Comparing the squad construction in offense vs defense and the huge mismatch between the two. Does Bayern Munich need to sign a new striker in the summer? Who’s available? Kane, Kolo Muani, Vlahovic, etc. Signing off in an attempt to be positive for once. Be sure to stay tuned to Bavarian Podcast Works for all of your up to date coverage on Bayern Munich and Germany. Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg hooked up again, this time it was in the Bundesliga, but it sure looked and felt a lot like a rehash of what happened on Tuesday. SC Freiburg was extremely disciplined and Bayern Munich was very disjointed, which led to a shaky 1-0 victory for the Bavarians — thanks to a laser of a goal from Matthijs de Ligt. Here is what we have on tap for this episode: A rundown of the scoresheet — Bayern Munich’s terrible finishing prevented this game from being a blowout on the scoreboard. A look at the lineup, what changed for Thomas Tuchel, and some thoughts on why he might have made the changes (Dayot Upamecano was suspended, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was hurt, and some other benching that were probably deserved). Is Jamal Musiala getting Scottie Jetpacks’d? (Deep cut you might want to hear). De Ligt was the savior. Bayern Munich met SC Freiburg in the DFB-Pokal in what will be the first of two matches between the clubs in a four day span. Bavarian Podcast Works: Postgame Show — Bayern Munich 4-2 Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga)
So the Thomas Tuchel era starts with a bang. Bayern Munich dispatched Borussia Dortmund with 70 minutes of ruthless efficiency combined with 20 minutes of complete incompetence. 4-2 flatters the opponent because it could’ve easily been 6-0 in the first half itself. A quick recap of how the game played out, and the poor play in the final 20 minutes. Why Thomas Muller looks soooooooo much better in the 4-2-3-1 system, especially compared to his role under Julian Nagelsmann. Subbing Thomas Muller remains a critical mistake no matter what your tactics are. The resurgence of Leroy Sane and how he came alive in the second half. The potential changes that could improve this lineup — mainly Jamal Musiala and Noussair Mazraoui.
