Ep 283Hard Truth About Parenting the Conscious Way

In our performance, achievement, good grades and behavior oriented culture, we get stuck in unhelpful, old and deeply entrenched patterns. We repeat what we don't heal. It takes courage, willingness, commitment and hard work (and a whole lot of self-compassion) to parent differently than our parents. It's all about deepening our awareness on a daily basis, learning new skills and adapting a process oriented mindset as opposed to result oriented. That's the path to growth and positive change. And change doesn't happen overnight. If you are like most of us then probably you sometimes question whether or not you're doing a good job as a parent. What we share might surprise you. On this episode with Ellen Gottlieb, author of How to Raise a Parent. Ep 282When Kids Don't Listen with Anna Seewald

"We are really struggling with kiddos not listening right now…I'm struggling to be patient and to show up as the parent I would like to be." In this solo podcast episode I answer some of your parenting questions (posted recently in our FB group). "We are struggling with our 6.5 year old teasing his brother and yelling at him. My little one is about to turn 3. My boys are whining and struggling to listen. It's feels like there's a lot of conflict going." "How to respond to my 6 yr old's frequent, explosive (& sometimes violent) tantrums - he has several a day over minor frustrations and not getting his way (even in response to long-established rules like no snacks in the hour before dinner)." I pulled common threads: kids not listening = not cooperating kids having tantrums and whining = exhibiting emotion regulation and impulse control challenges When it comes to kids not listening-cooperating, there are 2 emotional needs that we need to pay attention to: Attachment-connection Autonomy I can suggest 3 ways to elicit cooperation: Strengthen connection Honor and give more autonomy (in what areas you can give more autonomy?) Decrease control (how can you do that?) Other Episodes You May Like The Secret To Getting Kids To Listen and Cooperate Sibling Rivalry: Raising Friends for Life BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 273Coping with Loss with Anna Seewald

Warning: Because of the subject matter: death, loss, grief and the emotional nature of the conversation, this episode might be potentially triggering. Please assess your own physiological state, if you're ready to consume such content and be gentle to yourself. Listener description is advised. In this episode Anna talks about the sudden death of her only living parent, her dad. Kristy Lauricella, who is Anna's dear friend and a palliative care social worker, held space for her so that she can share the news of the passing of her dad with you, what she is going through right now and how she is copying with her loss and what she is thinking about end of life as an adult. As well as, what an influential person her dad was for her in becoming her authentic self and doing the work she is doing today. Kristy was one of the facilitators at the Authentic Parenting LIVE event in 2019 and she has also appeared on the podcast. Check out her thought-provoking conversation with Anna called Why We Need to Connect More, which striked a chord with many. Some key points in this conversation: Grief needs to be witnessed Grieving is an individual process Having a social support is vital in healing Allow feelings to be, feel them, stay with them, and move through them whenever they arise Taking care of yourself will go along the way Tips for talking to kids about death and losing loved ones, no BS Embrace the mystery of life, live your life well to honor the dead and legacy We hope by hearing her personal story you can find universal themes and value for yourself as loss and grief for many have been real issues in the past year. What do you do with so much information and advice that is out there? Do you often doubt yourself as a parent whether you are doing it right? On today's on-air coaching call I'm helping Cara, mom of a one year old girl. When is the right age for sending a toddler to daycare? When should she wean her baby from breastfeeding? Ep 262When Your Needs Are Not Met with Yvette Erasmus, PsyD

Yvette Erasmus on what happens when your needs are not fulfilled, the difference between needs and feelings, choicefulness, taking responsibility, stopping playing the victim and much more. Effective communication is at the heart of strong relationships. A critical aspect of effective communication is learning how to express our needs. But in order to learn to express first we need to get in touch with our needs. Communication can come into conflict when needs are unfulfilled. Unmet needs can lead to feelings of anger, confusion, disappointment, frustration, hopelessness, irritation, sadness, loneliness and embarrassment, to name only a few. Fully understanding what we need makes the next step in our communication easier–asking for what we need to enrich life. But it's not as easy as it sounds. BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 244Should You Worry About Kids' Screen Time in This Pandemic? with Anya Kamenetz

How can you set limits around screen time without feeling guilty? What to do when your kid has an explosive reaction when screen time is over? How much is too much and what kind of content is ok? Is Tik Tok inherently bad? Will violent video games cause aggression in kids? These and other important questions in this episode with an education correspondent for NPR and the author of The Art of Screen Time: Digital Parenting without Fear Anya Kamenetz. With social distancing limiting our ability to connect and physically interact, daily screen time has increased in our lives. And even before the COVID-19 global pandemic, there were concerns about what screen time is doing to our health. But screens are not inherently bad. And I'm definitely not against them. My advice to you is: Use common sense and your own best judgment, know your child, your family, your needs. Prioritize human connections and emotions. Spend time together without screens daily. Protect sleep. Be sure kids have other activities besides screens during the day. It's all about balance. Be a good role model yourself. BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 241How to Cultivate Self-Love

What is self-love? Where do the roots of low or lack of self- love originate? Are there degrees of self- love? Is the opposite of self-love self-hatred? Can you love someone if you don't love yourself fully? How can you cultivate and practice more self-love? This is the topic of today's exploration. I'm joined by Nathalie Ellis. I'd love to hear from you. 3 things I'm particularly interested in: What's your understanding of self-love? Can you love someone if you don't love yourself? You have to love yourself before someone else can love you. Do you agree or disagree? BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 2363 Steps to Effective Limit Setting

In today's episode I'm helping Adriana, a mom of 2 kids, ages 2 and 4 years old with limit setting. I demystify the limit setting process and ask Adriana to get clear on her why behind saying "no". Setting limits doesn't have to be unpleasant. You don't have to be harsh or angry. It's all about knowing your why, staying calm and present, communicating the limit with compassion and holding that limit knowing that kids will have emotional reactions. You don't have to feel guilty or even give in. In fact I suggest using playfulness and humor as strategy. I've created a special playlist on Spotify with all the On-Air-Coaching Episodes of 2019 for easy consumption. Access it here and enjoy!
