Ep 366Mother Hunger: How Adult Daughters Can Understand and Heal from Lost Nurturance, Protection, and Guidance with Kelly McDaniel

Mother loss comes in many forms: cancer, suicide, illness, murder, accidents. And while many women still have their mothers, they have lost them to abandonment, addiction, memory malfunction, mental illness and more. Kelly McDaniel is an author and clinician supporting women on the journey toward relational wholeness. In her first book, Ready to Heal, she addresses cultural double standards and family wounds that set women up for addictive relationship habits. Her second book, Mother Hunger, is the culmination of 30 years of research, clinical expertise, and a deep understanding of mothering myths. Mother Hunger provides women a name for the misunderstood root of poor eating patterns, chronic relationship disappointment, and distorted self image. In Mother Hunger what Kelly does is validate the experience of mother loss by giving a poignant name to a phenomenon that many will know very well and offer an elegant and useful framework for healing. In short, this is a conversation about childhood attachment injuries and their lasting impact. Kelly destigmatized the shame that comes with being under-mothered and offers a healing path with powerful tools that include lifestyle changes and therapeutic interventions. During her first interview we talked about her memoir The Girl in The Boots: Making Peace with My Mother. She specializes in eating disorders and the mother daughter relationship. Today's conversation is a wide ranging one. We focused on the transformative power of deep listening, as well as went into other interesting areas such as: The importance of taking personal responsibility in relationships, particularly in the parent child relationship How we all have a need to be listened to, and healing happens once someone truly witnesses our experiences and chooses to listen to us deeply. How we unconsciously repeat harmful patterns and what it takes to break those cycles Why therapists care so much about the past How we build resilience And so much more Judy says that deep listening is an act of generosity. Ep 363Who We Are and How We Heal with Nina Mongendre

None of us came out of childhood unscathed. Let's face it, even the lucky ones among us didn't get an ideal childhood. Are you still looking for approval from your parents? Do you long for them to see and accept you for who you are? How do you see your parents today? Are you holding onto a fantasy? Is there anything you need from them in order to live your life fully and authentically? Deep, raw and very personal conversation with kundalini yoga and meditation teacher Nina Mongondre. She is the author of the Inner Child & Beyond Oracle deck and is writing a book about inner child and ancestral healing. In her private practice, she offers shamanic healing, neuroEmotional coaching and inherited trauma work. The central theme is the parent-adult child relationship and some key points we touched upon are: How becoming a parent gives us new understanding and appreciation for our parents How in order to accept, we need to grieve first What healing in a relationship means to us The acute and sudden awareness of an immense vulnerability after you lose your parents that those who still have their parents alive won't understand How our parents live in us even if we cut ties with them And so much more. Ep 354Every Memory Deserves Respect: Finding Healing With EMDR Therapy with Michael Baldwin

WRANING The following episode contains content that may be triggering to some listeners. Please check the show notes for more detailed descriptions and take care of yourself. It contains discussions of complex trauma, the depiction of traumatic events, graphic descriptions of violence against children with sounds of a beating, has references to emotional neglect, child abuse, sibling abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, dysfunctional family, and childhood trauma: Listener discretion is strongly advised. With that said, the story that we unravel has a positive ending. It's truly an incredible, compelling, and inspiring story about someone who experienced trauma during childhood and recovered from it with EMDR therapy. All his life Michael suffered tremendously from the effects of trauma. He experienced severe symptoms, fears and phobias and felt lost, like he had nothing, that he was nothing. He developed survival strategies to cope with his pain. At the age of sixty-one, despite years of therapy, he was no closer to understanding why so many things that came effortlessly to others were impossible for him: sustaining a relationship or a career, even using public bathrooms. In 2017 when he started EMDR therapy he had such severe symptoms that his life felt like a prison.
