Ep 348The Power of Vulnerability to Create Intimacy
Allowing oneself to be vulnerable with another person can be exceedingly difficult yet rewarding as it leads to more closeness and intimacy. Can asking another person a structured set of questions really help two people deepen closeness and boost intimacy or fall in love? We are exploring the famous 36 questions to fall in love experiment. The so-called 36 questions to fall in love are a set of questions developed in the 1990s by psychologists Arthur Aron, Ph.D., Elaine Aron, Ph.D., and other researchers to see if two strangers can develop an intimate connection just from asking each other a series of increasingly personal questions. The 36 questions in the study are broken up into three sets, with each set intended to be more probing than the previous one. If you are looking to strengthen your relationship with your spouse, deepen your connection with your friend or romantic partner, reconnect emotionally with someone, fall in love with someone new, boost intimacy and closeness give the 36 questions a try. Remember, vulnerability is not weakness. ABOUT MY CO-HOST Kristy Lauricella is a psychotherapist in private practice in New Jersey. Ep 339How to Support Your Sensitive Child with Dr. Becky

Ep 337You Are Not a Bad Parent with Carla Naumburg
Carla Naumburg, a clinical social worker, mother, and author of five non-fiction books, including her international bestseller, How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t With Your Kids is back to the show. Have you ever thought that you were a bad parent, doing a shitty job, failing your kids or just doubting whther you were doing it "right"? Parents feel that way. And there are real good reasons for that. We talk about that on the show. In addition, Carla shares tangible steps for how to use each to help parents reduce their anxiety, trust their instincts, move past the guilt and become a calmer, more confident parent. Which, in the end, benefits your child as much as you. Great parenting is not the same thing as perfect parenting. Great parenting starts with true self-compassion, the kind that means you don't judge yourself. Harnessing this self-compassion is the key to giving yourself a break and embracing your best qualities as a parent. Ep 335Overcoming Adversity & Thriving Against All Odds with David Ambroz
ATTENTION: This episode touches on sensitive topics such as poverty, homelessness, parental mental illness and foster care. Listener discretion is advised. For my guest David and his two siblings, their mother's paranoid schizophrenia brought with it poverty, violence, and instability. They traveled through New York and neighboring areas seeking shelter: they found it in train stations, 24-hour diners, anywhere warm and dry. The first 11 years of his life he was homeless, then he was placed in foster care. At first, it felt like salvation but soon proved to be just as unsafe for him. As a gay child, David's coming-off age is fusrther marked by anti-gay abuse at the hands of caregiovers and therpists. David Ambroz is a national poverty and child welfare expert and advocate. He was recognized by President Obama as an American Champion of Change. He currently serves as the Head of Community Engagement (West) for Amazon, coordinating with non-profits and community leaders for social good. Previously he led Corporate Social Responsibility for Walt Disney Television, and served as the President of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission, and as a California Child Welfare Councilmember. Parental Burnout: Causes, Signs and How to Cope With It with Kate Gawlik
If parenting was stressful before the pandemic, during the COVID-19 global crisis, ⅔ of parents experienced some level of burnout. The pandemic is not over and stress on parents is not going to magically go away and it is critical that we recognize and find ways to prevent burnout in parents. Kate Gawlik, an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing at The Ohio State University on how to recognize the signs of parental burnout and how to cope with it. Parental burnout builds in stages, slowly. Phase one -overwhelming exhaustion. Next phase, burned-out parents tend to distance themselves from their kids to preserve their energy. And the third phase is loss of fulfillment. You can take the self-assessment tool provided by Kate to learn more about yourself. Burnout runs on a continuum. A report by The Ohio State University Office of the Chief Wellness Officer and College of Nursing found the stress was simply too much for many working parents to handle, revealing that two-thirds of working parents experienced some level of burnout. The study found an association between burnout and depression, anxiety, alcohol consumption and The research, conducted in 2021 found stress on parents also had consequences for children, as parental burnout was associated with punitive behavior towards their kids – including screaming, criticizing and even physical harm – and increased acting out by their children. Ep 322Why Anxiety Is Good For You Even Though It Feels Bad
Today's guest —Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D strongly believes that we pervasively misunderstand anxiety and presents a new framework for reimagining and reclaiming the confounding emotion as the advantage that it evolved to be. Ep 318What Comes After Grief? with Hope Edelman
Unexpressed grief from the past may be one of the most overlooked public crises of our time. Says my guest, Hope Edelman today-who is a strong voice and influential figure in the bereavement field and her books have helped countless people, especially women, as she wrote about mother loss. And mother loss, doesn't necessarily mean loss by death. There is abandonment, separation, neglect… Her new book is one of the most important books I've encountered one the topic. It's called The AfterGrief: Finding Your Way Along the Long Arc of Loss. As the title suggests, adjusting to loss is a lifelong process but as you'll learn from this conversation-it doesn't have to be a lifelong struggle. The AfterGrief is where we learn to live with a central paradox of bereavement: that a loss can recede in time and yet remain so exquisitely present. Ep 314The 6 Critical Emotional Needs of Children with Anna Seewald
In this solo episode Anna talks about the 6 critical emotional needs of children. She provides an overview with some examples to help you understand your children better; become a better decoder of their behavior, uncover their emotional needs and meet the needs with responsiveness and sensitivity. She goes over her 4 Buckets Framework for understanding challenging behaviors (NEEDS is only one of the categories). In our culture we are always fixated on the behavior itself(we want to stop, correct and get rid of). When we focus on the behavior in isolation (wanting to stop, correct, get rid of etc.) and see the behavior as the problem, we misunderstand children. We miss the mark. So challenging behaviors not only persist but escalate and become more destructive, and intensify. Behavior-based approach is not effective. In no particular order here are the 6 emotional needs: Safety Respect Acceptance Autonomy Significance Connection If you want to learn more and go deeper, get The Why of Challeneging Behaviors and the How-to of Dealing with Them now. We all have a story. Your life story defines who you are. And only you can tell your own story. By sharing it you not only release painful feelings, make sense of what happened to you, gain a new perspective, form a new meaning, but you access a possibility of transforming your life. Whether you share your story orally or in a written form, it has healing power. Do you have an untold story inside that is itching to be shared? Ep 310Why You Can't Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again with Johann Hari
Have you noticed that your ability to pay attention is collapsing? Did you know that in the US teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time and office workers average only three minutes? Like so many of us Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He went on a quest to find out what was happening to our attention and he wrote a phenomenal book called Stolen Focus. He argues in the book that your focus has been stolen by some powerful external forces. Hari found that there are 12 deep causes of this crisis, from the decline of the mind-wandering to rising pollution, all of which have rubbed some of our attention. Hari says that we can reclaim our focus-as individuals and as a society-if we are determined to fight for it. SOME KEY POINTS Why do we need to pay attention to our attention? How childhood is happening behind closed doors and the lack of free unstructured play and movement is affecting kids The myth of multitasking and the switch cost effect Why tech is not the only invader of your attention And why the solutions require both individual and collective approaches And so much more GET HIS BOOKS God Save the Queen? Ep 309Why Your Happiness Matters with Ericka Souter
Parenting is hard. But being a parent doesn't mean you have to stifle your most basic wants and needs. It doesn't mean it has to consume you to the degree of self-sacrifice and martyrdom and you definitely don't need to lose yourself to be a good parent. Ericka Souter, author of How to Have a Baby and a Life on why being good for our kids has to become synonymous with being good to ourselves. If you are not happy, your children know it, moreover children suffer if the people taking care of them are not taking care of themselves. Mothers who feel depressed are more likely to have children who act out or have other behavioral problems. Researchers say that a mom's satisfaction with her life is more important to a child's social and emotional skills than how much money she has, the amount of time she spends with them, or whether she is working or a stay-at-home mom. SOME KEY POINTS Why you need a village and how to cultivate support for yourself When it comes to friendships quality over quantity The 3 conditions for lasting relationships The surprising truth about sexless marriages and how to have more sex How despite progress, women still bear heavier load than men in balancing work and family How not having a child should be an option too What do women talk about at NotMom Summit Why the parents in US proved to be the most miserable in the world OTHER EPISODES YOU MAY ENJOY 64: Why You Should Let it Go And Be Happy 72: From Coping to Thriving: How to turn Self-Care into a Way of Life 97: Why You Might Be Feeling Tired, Negative and Overwhelmed 147: What Does Self-Care Really Mean 144: Mommy Burnout BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW You can choose a level of support on Patreon.com by becoming a patron. Ep 307How Mother Loss Shapes Who We Become
Warning: This episode contains mature themes and sensitive topics. While I think the conversation is deep, important and rich, it could be triggering for some. Please use your best judgment and assess whether you are in the right state of mind to be exposed to such content at this point in time. Hope Edelman and Dr. Judith Rabinor on how mother loss shapes our identity and impact the way we parent. Losing a parent as a child is always traumatic. And its impact is long-term. Two short sentences but they say a lot. Especially for those of us who have become bereaved by a parental death before the age of 18. SOME KEY POINTS Why we don't like talking about grief How there is no getting over it when it comes to grief How not all loss is traumatic Hitting important life milestones and transitions as a motherless mother such as: Approaching, just turned or passing the age of your mom when she died and your child turning the age you were when your mother died MENTIONED LINKS AND RESOURCES Hope Edelman's website Judith Rabinor's webiste Ep. 290 : The Complicated Mother-Daughter Relationship with Judith Rabinor, Ph.D GET THE BOOKS Motherles Daughthers Motherless Mothers The AfterGrief The Girl in The RedBoots: Making Peace with My Mother OTHER EPISODES YOU MAY LIKE 194: The Dark Side of Motherhood 104: Overcoming Childhood Trauma 67: Not Like My Mother: Breaking Free from the Past 77: Loss, Grief and the Mysterious Meanings of Your Dreams 98: Healing from Trauma 99: Should We Forgive Our Parents? Ep 305Breathing and Your Health
We enter into the world with a breath and the process of breathing continues automatically. We don't pay much attention to it unless of course something goes wrong. But the way we breathe has an enormous impact on our health. To quote my guest directly: "Breathing impacts every aspect of health-sleep, digestion, movement, mental well-being, disease and recovery. It's an extraordinary resource with life-changing potential. And it's simple, free and available to everyone." You are about to learn some great information and practical techniques that are key to healthy breathing and healthy living. In today's conversation Patrick McKeown explains the difference between functional and dysfunctional breathing, the effects of dysfunctional breathing on our health, he emphasizes the importance of nasal breathing, the roles and misconceptions about oxygen and CO2, teaches us to breath correctly to get more oxygenation to our brain and cells, for improving focus, concentration, sleep, and ease stress and anxiety, relax the nervous system, overall health and performance. and get this, it turns out breathing for women is different. This is such a rich episode, packed not only with great information but also practical tips that you can apply right away for example how to open a blocked nose. I asked him about mask wearing: is it good, is it bad, what does it do to us, as well and learned interesting things about dry lips, double chin, ADHD and breathing and mouth taping at night for better sleep. Ep 299(Coaching) Dealing with Change

Ep 298The Power of Emotional Intelligence to Achieve Well-Being and Success with Marc Brackett
For the past 25 years Marc Brackett, Ph.D has been researching and writing about emotions and running around the world talking to people about their feelings. Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. "Our emotional state is one of the most important aspects of our lives. It rules everything else. Its influence is pervasive. Yet it is also the thing we steer around most carefully. Our inner lives are uncharted territory even to us, a risky place to explore. Our lives are saturated with emotions-sadness, disappointment, anxiety, irritation, enthusiasm and even tranquility. Sometimes-often-those feelings are inconvenient. The irony, though, is when we ignore our feelings, or suppress them, they only become stronger. " Key poiints: Why emotions matter? Ep 296Buddhism Meets Psychotherapy on the Path of Liberation
The core struggle for most of us is we want things to be different than they are. How can we free ourselves from unnecessary suffering and experience freedom that is already present in our lives. Ask yourself, what am I feeling right now that I don't want to feel? And is that a problem? Often we look outside ourselves either for problems or solutions. Couples blame one another-you should change so that I won't feel disturbed. By placing the cause of our disturbance outside of ourselves they miss the opportunity to develop a capacity to deal with our own disturbance. What is our tendency? We avoid feeling discomfort. We get wrapped up in stories and interpretations. Our normal way of operating is to relate to our embodied sensation from the perspective of our interpretations. According to my guest-Bruce Tift, the author of Already Free, the more we stay embodied with our moment to moment experience, the more confidence we have that we can work with whatever arises. Ep 295Strategies for Digital Parenting

Ep 294The Voice in Your Head and How To Harness It
We all have an inner voice and how it manifests differs from person to person. How well do you know your inner voice? Rather than silencing the negative self-talk-the chatter, we need to learn how to harness it. This is the central question of my guest's brand new book Chatter: The Voice In Our Head, Why It Matters and How To Harness It. Ethan Kross, Ph.D is an award-winning professor and bestselling author in the University of Michigan's top ranked Psychology Department and its Ross School of Business. He has participated in policy discussion at the White House and has been interviewed on CBS Evening News, Good Morning America, and NPR's Morning Edition. His pioneering research has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, USA Today, The Economist, The Atlantic, Forbes, and Time. In this interview Ethan reveals the hidden power of our inner voice and shows how we can harness it to live a healthier, more satisfying and more productive life. The good news is we are already equipped with the tools we need to make our inner voice work in our favor. Yes, that inner critic can become your inner coach. Key points: When do we first become aware of our inner voice? How does harmful mental chatter influence people's emotional health and physical health? Does venting emotions reduce harmful mental chatter? And so much more GET HIS BOOK Chatter: The Voice In Our Head, Why It Matters and How To Harness It BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 292Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness
There are so many therapeutic methods and healing modalities available these days. One of them is IFS, or parts work. I have the honor of speaking with the creator of IFS, Dr. Rick Schwartz. He's the creator of Internal Family Systems, IFS, a highly effective evidence-based therapeutic model. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical and effective set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, and more recently, corporations and classrooms. In this episode we talked about: The myth of the mono mind The goal and the 4 main benefits of IFS It's origin, growth and milestones Then Dr. Schwartz describes the parts and their roles We do a live demo We all have different parts. Think of an inner critic, for example, as one part. They all serve a purpose, even the most destructive ones have protective intentions. Parts are often frozen in past traumas when their extreme rules are needed When they trust it's safe to step out of their roles, they are highly valuable to the system. Ep 290Alarmed Aloneness
Did you know that when we name our feelings the activity in the amygdala decreases? My guest Sarah Peyton and I start today's conversation with this topic. She mentions Matthew Liberman's research She talks about the panic-grief circuit of the mammalian brain and explains the phenomenon of alarmed aloneness. Why she prefers the expression alarmed loneliness as opposed to separation anxiety and abandonment Some key points: The signs of alarmed aloneness Unconscious contracts what we make with ourselves and how can we release ourselves from those harmful agreements and live freely, The hippocampus and the amygdala in forming traumatic memories How do we show up for other people who show us that they need accompaniment? Of course our tendency is to offer advice and solutions. We all yearn for accompaniment, attunement, resonance. The difference between empathy and resonance Sarah's first book, Your Resonant Self, includes the foundational neuroscience concepts and client stories that help the reader pave a resonant practice path to self-compassion. Your Resonant Self Workbook builds onto the first book by adding the neuroscience of unconscious contracts, which supports an even deeper movement into self-warmth. Ep 290The Complicated Mother-Daughter Relationship
The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most important—and complicated in the lives of most adult women. Helping my patients understand their mothers has helped me become familiar with parts of myself - and my mother - I might have never known if not for the stories I've heard, says Judith Rabinor, PhD, We don't choose our mothers but as an adult you always have an opportunity to choose new pathways. It's never too late to let go of frustrated expectations and celebrate the connection you might have thought was doomed to disappointment and hurt. Your mother is the most important woman you have ever known. I'd love to suggest some books that I have found helpful: Motherless Daughters: The legacy of loss by Hope Edelman Motherless Mothers: How mother loss shapes the parents we become by Hope Edelman The Emotionally Absent Mother,: How to Recognize and Heal the Invisible Effects of Childhood Emotional Neglect The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller Mothers Who Can't Love by Susan Forward GET HER BOOK The Girl in The Red Boots: Making Peace with My Mother BECOME A SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW 1. Ep 289Mind-Body Tools to Develop Stress Resilience
Stress is part of life. When stress becomes too intense, too much and too frequent it overwhelms our nervous system, and awakens stress imprints from our past and we lose the ability to effectively recover from it. And for the past year-and-a-half we have been all pushed to our limits and stress and overwhelm have been ever more present in our lives. With stress activation unhealed and unprocessed, we can go through life almost on autopilot. Listen to this fantastic conversation as Rebekkah LaDyne talks about developing mind-body tools for stress resilience. Key Points: How parenting is an emotional experience and can place tremendous stress on our mind and body, especially if we have trauma history How there is beginning, middle and end to stress and how we often don't allow ourselves to experience the end, and new stresses over lapse causing more overwhelm How we can develop resilience by daily mind-body practices and there is no quick fix Why the key to well-being and resilience lies in befriending our body OTHER EPISODES YOU MAY ENHOY 194 The Dark Side of Motherhood 281 The Power of Self-Regulation 227 Moving Beyond Trauma with Illene Smith 203: Discovering Wholeness and Healing after Trauma with James Gordon, MD 147: What Does Self-Care Really Mean? 113 Signs of Childhood Trauma in Adults This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, the most comprehensive daily nutritional supplement.
