I'm always curious, when were these stories first started as an idea, then scripted, and then finally finished? Can you walk us through the timeline a bit?Memoria is a story our heroes are an old and sick detective and a young burnout detective, why are these types of detectives well suited for your story? The art by Sundando C and colors by Mark Dale add a level of realism we don't often see in detective stories of any kind (movies, comics), can you talk a little bit about the approach with the art and textures?Whenever a serial killer story pops up I ponder, did the writer research every serial killer ever? How much research went into Memoria? The quotes in the back of each issue feel almost like clues for the reader, as if we should read it and ponder its significance to the story itself, is that the case or did you use these for a different effect? For what it's worth, loved seeing a Blood Meridian quote at the end of issue #3.The solicit text calls this TRUE DETECTIVE meets LETHAL WEAPON Curious if you could comment on your opinion of True Detective and Lethal Weapon?Do you have a favorite DAVID FINCHER film? How do you approach writing dialogue? I noticed in the Memoria #1 advance copy, the slang is subtle, but it's there.Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou's lettering is something else with memoria, with no border on the word balloons, and ballons sort of gliding past each other never touching, were there prompts as far as lettering ideas? What was the process like?As someone who reads a lot of comics, I was curious if there are any specific comics you're reading right now that you're enjoying? With YOUTH currently in development with Amazon Studios is there anything you can talk about in regards to its development?

(Pause) Now, this was initially announced as a 10-issue series. Did you always have more stories in the tank if it were to get renewed, or did you expand your original plans when you got confirmation of more issues? You recently mentioned on Twitter that you're drawn to writing characters who give us "a unique window unto humanity, people — why we are the way that we are." What is it about the Swamp Thing - and Levi Kamei, in particular - that lends itself to telling those kinds of stories?Themes of familial duty and colonialism have been an especially strong component of the last few issues. Was that part of your original conception of the series, or is that something that has evolved as the book has continued?Mike Perkins and Mike Spicer have been creating some really incredible imagery, particularly when it comes to the delineation of the flashbacks in recent issues. Meanwhile, Aditya Bidikar has made Swampy's voice feel like it's rumbling right off the page. What has that collaboration process been like with all three?Levi’s brother Jacob has been teased from the start and makes an appearance in the latest issue, what makes their brotherhood so important to the narrative itself? While it was unclear what generated this plant-fueled apocalypse in Future State, Levi's reunion with Jacob suggests that Hedera's corrosive influence on the Green may be leading to this potential outcome. Is this an off base theory?!We’re obviously thrilled to hear that this story will be continuing. Anything you want to tease/any foreboding words of warning for the reader about what’s ahead? (Maybe: Might we see a return to the world of Future State: Swamp Thing?)

To start, you’ve got Clear, Night of the Ghoul, and We Have Demons all out this month, what made these 3 the best of the 8 planned titles at Comixology as the first to release? All three works feel incredibly new, fresh, and maybe even a new gear for your work compared to previous years, was there anything you were able to do under comiXology as far as “breaking rules” in comics storytelling you go to do here? What went into the strategy of doing 3 series a month?Something I adore about your writing is your creation stories, you’ve done a few, and We Have Demons has a great one, heck night of the ghoul has an origin that feels mythical, what inspires you to tackle creation myths? We Have Demons is so compelling, in part, because of the way it recontextualizes faith. It actually opens with a warning at the start of the book, was this warning always part of the plan, or did this come in later? Two of these books are penciled and colored by the artist (Manapul and Francavilla), do you find books colored and drawn by 1 artist come out different in any way?Was there a specific movie or director that inspired Night of the Ghoul? You’re doing some amazing work on your Substack with classes too, I recently watched the course talking about Donny Cates’ Venom. Is this an after-lifelong love for you?Steve, how did you approach balancing out the creatives you chose telling these stories, many of whom are making their comics debut? Ep 140Comic Book Couples Counseling Special

E

In this special episode, we skip the news and reviews and focus on our special guest interview with the Comic Book Couples Counseling podcasters Lisa and Brad!We also play Superfight and pit multiple couples against each other with the most ridiculous scenarios and ask Brad and Lisa to give their educated guess on who would win. You can follow Comic Book Couples Counseling on Twitter, check out their website, and their Patreon too.Segment - Interview: Comic Book Couples Counseling - Lisa and BradSo tell our listeners a bit about your show! How did you develop the concept for the podcast? What is your podcast prep process like?Brad, you recently mentioned that the show might have to end if and when you cover Lois and Clark. Are they the one true pairing in all of comics? If not, who is?To flip that, is there any comics couple you wouldn’t cover?Do you find that your podcast colors the way you read anything else that’s not for the show, or is this kind of how you’ve always looked at these kinds of stories?Spinning out of that, do you find that you’re only reading for the show, or do you feel like these are the books you’d gravitate to anyway? What has been the most surprising couple to research and talk about? The ones with more wrinkles and layers than you expected? Now, you two have much more available than just the main feed, correct? You’re diving into ALL of Sandman now. How has that discovery/rediscovery been?Do you have a “white whale” creator or creative team you’d like to have on your show? You started your podcast in December 2018, if you could go back and give yourselves advice, would you and what would it be?You also offer Patreon special access, can you talk a little about that?Segment: Super Fight Lightning RoundDinah & OllieScott & JeanJean & WolverineAlec & AbbyReed & SueDick & Babs Peter & Mary JaneHarley & IvySUPER SECRET LIGHTNING ROUND:Do you have any comfort food series you turn to to brighten your week?If you could have one super power what would it be?Favorite mode of procrastination? When is your anniversary?Apple or Android?Marvel or DC?If a train is travelling from Chicago at 50 miles an hour, and a Logan is shink’ing at 100 miles per hour, launched from the moon via a Galactus fastball special, how quickly would you buy that comic?

I’d love to start first with the recently announced, Regarding the Matter of Oswald’s Body #1, can you tell us a little bit about this new series and how long has this been in the works?Okay, we’re admittedly conspiracy theory junkies. Is it safe to say you enjoy getting lost down those kinds of rabbit holes? What is the research process like for this series? With Regarding the Matter of Oswald, She Could Fly: Fight or Flight on the way in October, and two Marvel titles ongoing atm, it’s fair to say this is the most comics writing you’ve done at one time. I was curious now that you’re a year out or so from Dr. Doom, how does writing in the comics format compare to writing for television? At the same time, it feels like you’re just getting started, are there any bucket list titles you’d like to work on?There’s a certain cosmic entity that shows up in Iron Man #11 (Living Tribunal but don’t say to avoid spoilers), how rad was it to write such a huge character, and was he always in the cards to use in the story arc? With The United States of Captain America, what was the new Captain America creation process like? Did you have a hand in curating the creators who would make these Cap’s Steve Rogers meets on the road? US of Captain America has a very “road movie” vibe to the pacing and overall tone. What are some of your favorite road movies, and did you throw any on while cracking this story? The Blue Flame is incredibly impactful in how juxtaposes the cosmic superhero story and smaller real-world story. How did scripting of this series shake out and was it always these two concurrent stories going at once? With Blue Flame, did any series inform how you wrote the cosmic scenes, like Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers? The look of the cosmic scenes in this series are so memorable. What’s the collaboration process been like with Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhau?This series has an original soundtrack written by your friend Aaron Fischer (who one of the many Caps has been named after)! How did that come about?Substack has taken over the comics news airwaves, what are your thoughts on the platform? What comics are you reading right now?Off Topic Top Shelf: Baseball cards

Ninjak has been in the works for some time, announced way back in July 2020, is it odd talking about a book that’s so long in development, or par for the course in comics?Ninjak has been rebooted and retooled various times over the years, how are you approaching the character? With the pandemic’s delay, did you end up tweaking this story more than past tales you’ve written, or did it stay pretty close to your original pitch.?Can you talk a bit about Javier Pulido’s work, was there a specific page in the first issue that he exceeded your expectations? What separates Ninjak from other rich and tactful superheroes? In your opinion, how does Valiant differ from other publishers? The super spy angle of Ninjak has always been a big draw. Do you have any spy movies or books you look to for inspiration or to get you in the headspace to write Ninjak? We’re big James Bond fans here, loved your James Bond Origin and recently talked to Ibrahim Moustafa about Bond as well, we must ask, who do you think is the definitive Bond?Future Quest and Batman 66 were books of yours that we reviewed and greatly enjoyed, do you have a desire to return to either of those projects in the future, or are there other series you’d like to return to some day? What other projects do you have in the works? What comics are you reading right now?Off Topic Top Shelf: Jeff Parker - Beer!
