Ep 228We live in a society: Matt Bors, Ben Clarkson talk ‘Justice Warriors’

E

This week, creators Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson join us to discuss AHOY Comics series Justice Warriors. First off, congratulations on the second printing of Justice Warriors! For our listeners, what’s the elevator pitch for this series?Every page is full of interesting background bits. Dudes with clown noses, graffiti that says “Hell is otter people.” How much of this is in the script and how much is going buck wild while illustrating a page?On that same note, how often do you find yourselves going back to add “just one more” detail? With the creative juices flowing at various stages of layouts, how far did Justice Warriors steer from the original outline or plan by the time you reached the end?The Prince is less of a villain and more of a goober. Was it important to you to have an authority figure like this in the book?I noticed fun references to pop culture, like the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers handshake, is there any reference or gag in the book you hold particularly dear to your heart? If you handed this book to someone in the bubble, I feel like it’d read like perfect JW propaganda. Was that a tonal goal here?Horoscopes play a huge part in Justice Warriors, are either of you into horoscopes, or maybe the opposite, despise them? Are either of you a Libra? If a Justice Warriors 2 was crafted, who might the threat be this time?Matt, for those who don’t know, you ran The Nib for 10 years, a twice named a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Likely a sensitive topic, why are you closing shop now? When can we expect the final issue to land at our doorsteps (after we buy it from thenib.com)?It’s way too early I’m sure, but if The Nib continued in some format, where or how might we see The Nib?

Congrats on the Power Girl Special, and thank you for bringing these characters into the Dawn of DC initiative! To start at a baseline: What are your histories with these characters? All of these are characters with a good bit of baggage, both emotionally and in terms of decades of continuity. How did you create these stories as jumping-on points for new readers? At the same time, these characters have all lent themselves to various interpretations over the years. Human Target, the New 52, etc. How do you go about synthesizing and building off of all of the different women they have been? - i accidentally did this tooPower Girl Special feels like it gets to a lot of emotional areas for Power Girl, especially grief and self-doubt. These emotions are so resonant and deeply powerful, how do you achieve the emotionality in the character and make it so real?Johnny Sorrow, what makes him so fun to write?Leah, we loved X-Terminators – and it got us wondering - and feel free to jump in here, Joanne: What DC characters or team would be ripe for an X-Terminators-style grindhouse book?Joanne, superhero breakups seem to be the worst. Are they actually more difficult than they are for civilians, or just louder?Something tells us Smallville won’t be all cornfields and apple pie. What does this series have in store for our heroes?Joanne - Sirens of the City is finally coming to print from Boom in July! How did this come about?Do you have anything else to promote today?Lighting roundFavorite ice cream flavor?Favorite pet type?Favorite Kryptonian?Do you play Marvel Snap? If so, what deck do you run?

Is there some truth there, or is this the most insular abusive relationship ever? There are so many tools at your disposal when crafting a comic, from letters, to formatting of a page, which we see you do a lot of in Detective Comics #1068. As someone with a lot of impressive comics under your belt, do you ever find yourself trying to disassemble how a comic story is told and then reassemble it?For those that read only Carnage or only read Detective Comics, is there a connective tissue of themes or your approach that could be said to swing their attention to the book they aren’t reading? You’re always working on so many titles at once--50 issues written in 2022--can you give us any hints or details on what your 2023 will look like?

Ep 200Spider-Man Spectacular: Zeb Wells, Cody Ziglar, and Dan Slott chat Spidey and She-Hulk too

E

Join Nathan and Dave in celebrating 200 episodes of the AIPT Comics podcast! It has been a real trip, and it got even trippier this week as each of the current ongoing Spider-Man writers got into one room to chat Spidey! Amazing Spider-Man writer Zeb Wells, Spider-Man writer Dan Slott, and Miles Morales: Spider-Man writer Cody Ziglar all talk about the webhead. We dig into when they started reading Spider-Man, what's in store for their series in 2023, and so much more!Oh wait, but there's more, don't miss our lengthy chat about She-Hulk! Ziglar and Wells were both writers on this year's incredible Disney+ show. Get insider stories, they discuss their love of the character, and more!Interview Questions:Thank you all for joining the AIPT comics podcast for its 200th episode! To start, I want to take us all back to the beginning…of your relationship with Spider-Man. What was your first Spider-Man comic growing up?Fans might wonder, with the three “heads of state” of spider-man, how often are you collaborating or reading each others scripts? You each have your own realms of Spidey to tackle, how far out have you plotted their exploits?Dan, DID YOU KILL SPIDER-BOY?Beyond Board was created with a bunch of great writers, what brought that together? All three of you are closely tied to She-Hulk, what is it about the character that you love the most?Zeb and Cody: You’re MCU canon now. How was that day on set and how difficult has it been to keep this a secret?Cody, tell us a bit about Rabble! Is this someone totally new to the scene, and should the rest of the heroes in New York be watching their backs? How’s the collaboration been with Federico Vicentini so far?Zeb and Dan, you both are currently working with veteran Spider-Man artists, what’s it like working with such seasoned artists?Zeb, how important was it to you to get Peter on his own again? Since it’s the 200th episode, I’m curious about 200’s for you guys, is there something you’ve created 200 of, or collected 200 of, that you hold dear? What else are you working on that you’d like to hype today? Maybe a tease of Dark Web?

How long has the project been in the works?Given the political underbelly of New America, do you hope the series could enact change in the real world? There’s a lot of passion on the page, particularly a scene with a burning of something, when writing the first draft for this did you have to scale back your own passion, or lean into it?It’s hard to shock me, but I honestly was taken aback by some of the violence. You see holes in people. What went into the choice to make the violence graphic?Set in the future, how futuristic does New America get?New America ends up on news channels come its release August 23, what’s your response? Do you go on the 24 hour news talk shows?Curt you’re a busy guy, do you have other projects you’d like to talk about today?

You've basically got a story within a story here, one of my favorite kinds of comics, but a specific kind at that. What inspired the concept behind this annual?I love how many full page splashes you give Serg Acuna, was there a formula or a thinking process as to where those splashes take place?I have to respect your nerdness, Jeremy, as there's not one but multiple references to pop culture. I think I caught a Harry Potter, a Star Trek, maybe Rocketeer too, do you ever consciously think about putting references like this into the story?Something I think fans will love about this annual is how you write Linda and how you convey her strength even prior to having powers. Why was that important to highlight for you with this annual? There's a cliffhanger here that'll have folks gasp, without spoiling it, how serious are you and DC Comics in pursuing this storyline? In your humble opinion what is a more powerful weapon for Linda, super speed...or journalism/writing?What comics are you reading right now? What is your favorite form of procrastination?
