To start, this episode will air just a few days before Ultimates #1 comes out, how excited are you to see fan reactions? Can you talk a little bit about how you snagged the writing gig for Ultimates? By all accounts this seems like the most important book as far as worldbuilding is concerned. With a few scripts under your belt, is there a specific Ultimate/Avenger you enjoy writing the most? Were you a fan of the original Ultimates and the line at the time? The FCBD story you wrote gives us a lot of hints as to the whereabouts of heroes, I was curious, how much of those required Wil Moss to check as far as green lighting things, or do you have full reign to erase or delete a character from this timeline?Pie in the sky, is there a character that floats to the top you’re excited to dig into, and if it’s a spoiler, can you give a hint as to who they might be? 19:0020:26Juan Frigeri is no slouch when it comes to big superhero action, was there a panel or page he blew you away with, so far?I was a big fan of your Children of the Vault miniseries, which frankly had some mind bending ideas at work. Did writing that help you gear up for Ultimates in any way?Does the Ultimate Universe office have a slack going? Are you all digging into each others scripts and keeping tabs?At this point 20th Century Men is iconic in a lot of ways, for fans of Ultimates, why should they check it out?

The horror-comedy tells a fast-paced, cautionary tale about systems designed to control expression and behavior and explores how society organizes itself when ratings affect your day-to-day life. With humor, horror, and the repercussions of nonexistent humanity, DEATH RATIO’D offers readers a fresh look at how today’s social practices can be pushed to the extreme and do anything but bring the world closer together.Mark Russell, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! Where did you start with this scary look at a social media nightmare future? How do you personally feel about social media?Do you feel like this is where we’re heading? Ep 268Creator Spotlight: Ram V 'Knowing everything is overrated'

E

Interview - Ram V talks about The One Hand, Detective Comics, Rare Flavours, Dawnrunner, and more!Ram V, we’re huge fans of yours at AIPT from The Vigil to Detective Comics, The One Hand, and your past works of course too, thank you for being on the AIPT comics podcast! You recently said on Matthew Rosenberg’s podcast you want to take time off from comics to write a novel, is there something percolating you’re itching to write and if so what genre might it be?To start, in Detective Comics Batman is currently on a hallucinatory trek in a story called An Elegy of Sand, what inspired you to take him on a trek like this? Have you gone on a trek like this yourself? The reality engine is so fascinating, how might you describe it to a reader curious about jumping on your run?I’ve read you’ve mapped out a 30-issue run ending Detective with issue #1089, are you still on target for that issue to be the finale?Dan Watters writes the backups in Detective, and he’s also your collaborator on The One Hand/The Six Fingers, do you collaborate as closely on the image comics series as much as the Detective Comics series? As an avid reader of comics, I simply love the idea of a crossover mystery that you’ve described as a mystery for the reader to solve. Surely this required a corkboard and red string all about to get just right? Then you have Creature from the Black Lagoon, also a Watters/Ram V jam, are you guys working on each of these projects similarly or does each one bring out a different work process? The oversimplification of Dawnrunner is giant mechs versus kaiju, how long has this project been percolating for you?The X-Men are relaunching this July, is there any character or X-book you’ve ever pondered taking on if you had carte blanch?Rapid Fire Question Round:Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve written before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?What number am I thinking of?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

Ep 267The future of Oni Press: Publisher Hunter Gorinson and EiC Sierra Hahn interview

E

To start, tell us about yourself, what’s the “once upon a time” of how you got into comics?Oni press has a long history of incredible indie projects, Rick and Morty comics, and a lot more, but I feel like things turned when Lion Forge and Oni merged in 2019, and then Hunter you became president in 2022. It was only 2 years ago you got the role, what of your day-one plan has been achieved an then what's left on the "list"?What would you say Oni Press’ mission is in comics, how do you define yourself from the pack? You currently have The CULT OF THE LAMB Kickstarter running and it’s a huge success, do you foresee using Kickstarter more going forward? It was amazing seeing the response to the news you’ll be printing NEW EC Comic, how long has this launch been in the works?I think it’s fair to say David Lynch is a hugely impactful character on our culture, especially in pop culture today, and with BARRY GIFFORD’s Night People getting an adaptation, I was curious why you zero’d in on this project for 2024?Something I think comics fans forget is the curation of a line is a ton of work, and with Oni Class of 2024 in high gear, can you talk a little bit about putting together these new ongoing series?JILL AND THE KILLERS #1—a razor-sharp teenage thriller from Olivia Cuartero-Briggs (Mary Shelley Monster Hunter) and Roberta Ingranata (Witchblade) in JanuaryCEMETERY KIDS DON’T DIE #1—a near-future descent into a virtual world with killer consequences from Zac Thompson (Hunt for the Skinwalker) and Daniel Irizarri (XINO) in FebruaryNIGHT PEOPLE #1—an uneasy odyssey into the provocative and surreal periphery of the American underworld from award-winning novelist and screenwriter Barry Gifford (Lost Highway, Wild at Heart) and writer Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) with artists Brian Level (Poison Ivy), Alexandre Tefenkgi (The Good Asian), Artyom Topilin (I Hate This Place), and more in MarchAKỌGUN, BRUTALIZER OF GODS #1—a fearlessly unrelenting reinvention of the barbarian mythos from creative powerhouses Murewa Ayodele (I Am Iron Man) and Dotun Akande (Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood) in AprilHow do projects move into Oni, I’m thinking specifically of Hobtown Mysteries and your upcoming Webtoon projects. We’ve also got HOBTOWN MYSTERIES vol. 1 getting a reprint in May with a new Vol. 3 in 2025, how did this project come to be given it was originally set up at Conundrum Press?Another comic set at another publisher, COVENANT, is a WEBTOOn comic with a print run coming in April. How did this project come to be at Oni?Following that is SUBZERO out in September, are you dabbling in manga possibly in the near future? If Oni Press under your direction was a song, what would it be and why?

Why is that? We’re super into magic rules at AIPT. Do you have a Barbaric Bible? It’s kind of impossible not to get heavy metal vibes from this series, so I have to ask: Do you fellas listen to any particular bands to get in the headspace for Barbaric? Would it be out of line to guess Mastodon is on rotation? It’s early yet, but how do you integrate a multi-story robot into a gritty espionage story like Duke?

Batman Off World #1 is out now, conratz on pulling off a compelling and different kind of Batman story! As far as pitches are concerned, was Off World your first pitch to DC?The story picks up with Batman only 1 year into his tenure as a superhero, what were the factors in setting the story at this point in time?I saw you had mentioned in a previous interview your love of Atari Force, is there any desire to ask DC to dust it off and give you a whirl writing a new series? There’s something so primal about how you write Batman, reminding me of Batman vs. Predator in some respects. What goes into writing Batman in a state of constantly improving on himself? There are a lot of different alien races in Batman Off-World, one of which is the Branx created by Marv Wolfman, George Pérez, did you have to dig deep into your research to pick which aliens to add to the story? How do you balance the grounded nature of batman with, aliens and spaceships?I saw some commotion on Reddit around Ione and Batman kissing on a cover, what kind of woman do you think can steal Batman’s heart?Switching gears to Action Comics #1061, I adore what you’re doing with Bizarro, and similar to Batman Off-World, you’re dealing with another alien world, this time Sorcerers' World. Is it fair to say you’re interest lies with alien worlds and characters at DC Comics?Do you have a favorite Bizarro story? John Timms brings a lot of dynamic action in the first issue of the story arc, is there a panel or page where he blew your expectations away?Do you have a method in writing Bizarro dialogue, like do you write the dialogue than reverse it?

What has been the most rewarding thing about drawing this series so far?Your story is taking place in the 40s DC universe, how much room do you have to play, considering a single choice could affect the universe going forward?Red Lanterns are relatively new in the grand scheme of things and yet…might your story be rewriting the appearance of Red Lanterns? Is there pressure in delivering on that front? Will you continue to plumb moments in Alan’s life in each issue, or will the narrative be more linear going forward? The legacy of Green Lantern is growing thanks to you guys, do you have a favorite Green Lantern story arc?Alan Scott - have you changed your opinion of the character? The anti-gay backlash has been disgusting and I understand you’re giving your royalties to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Tim.

Ep 242Creator spotlight: Christian Ward on Batman: City of Madness and more

E

Batman: City of Madness Interview:Batman: City of Madness is epic in a lot of ways and visually stunning. What’s the basic premise when it comes to your take on Batman? There are a few plots simmering in the first issue, with Two-Face, Alfred, and The Court of Owls…and more, what has been the most fun developing?Talk to us about the importance of Morrison & McKean’s Arkham Asylum in this story and your own life!I love the visual representation of Harvey/TF, from imagery to lettering. Take us through your process of creating this take on the character.Like many Lovecraft stories, this one is told partly thru letters. Was that part of the structure from the beginning? With fans picking this up in just a few days, was there a particular page or panel that you spent extra time on getting right? As a cosmic horror, what are some of your favorite cosmic horror stories? The color choices are compelling, with blues, reds, and purples. Were you after a certain visual story through color? It appears Batman is sporting purple in his costume like in the old days, what approach did you take with designing a new suit and do you have a favorite of his many suits? If Batman: City of Madness were a song, what would it be and why?Standout KAPOW moment of the career! - Batman: City of Madness #2Rapid Fire Question Round (So that Christian can be “known”):Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve drawn or written before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?What number am I thinking of?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

Chip Zdarsky joins the show in a special interview-only episode to discuss his career. We dig into Batman, the ongoing crossover Gotham War, and talk about his creator-owned projects. Why or why not?About how long are you writing each week, or each day?Do you write differently depending on the artist?Pace of a story is so intriguing to me, how do you approach getting pacing right with something like Newburn vs Batman, or Kaptara?Do you think you’d be a good detective?Kaptara is so weird and out there, I love the soap opera aspects, the fact that it’s so eclectic, be it character or setting. Having grown up watching General Hospital as a little kid I can’t help but love it. How do you approach plotting an issue and get that effect? The conflict in Gotham War feels very natural given where you’ve taken Batman and where Catwoman has been in the last few years, was this a crossover a long time in the making? What you're doing with Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is truly exciting, what is the appeal of the character for you?Having written Daredevil for a number of years, has working on that book influenced your writing on Batman? Rory 1:01As a writer known for humor, do you struggle with not making Batman or DD smarmy? ColinIn the mount rushmore of superheroes to write, I feel like you’ve done them all, Chip! I can’t help but see some parallels! How did your work on that series about a girl gang with a badass lead vocalist prepare you for Birds of Prey? With a few issues under your belt at this point, I’m sure, is there a character that floats to the top of most fun to write? Follow up, who is a character that surprises you the most?We all know Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire are gosh darn gifts to the comics community. Were there particular visual moments that impressed you or surprised you in the first issue or two that you’d like to shout out?Something that always impresses me is your dialogue, particularly with groups! I’ve come to learn after interviewing different writers the approach to writing good dialogue can be different. Is there a particular technique you use in writing dialogue, or feeling out how different characters will approach one another? We’re greatly enjoying Black Cloak at AIPT, which presents a fully realized new world. How do you approach worldbuilding? Is there a Black Cloak Bible? (Folks should definitely check out the finale next week.)You also have The Cull coming out from Image Comics on August 16th, described as horrifying and delightful with a group even the press release calls reminiscent of the Goonies. When creating an entirely new friend group, how do you go about crafting their personalities and making them a unit, but separate?Anything else you’d like to promote today? Where can people find you?

More info. FOC for Issue 1 is July 31 - Release Date: August 23The premise of The Schlub is so perfect, so, “how did nobody think of this before,” what is the elevator pitch in your own words?Ryan, I know this was an idea you pitched a few years ago, how did the project change once Kenny and Tyrell came on board? The ashcan preview issue has been out for a little over a week. How has the response been so far?Is this a writing situation similar to Mike Mignola who works with tons of writers to bring Hellboy to life, Kenny & Tyrell are you running everything by Ryan who must approve every small detail? (joking)Now’s your chance to promote KLC Press and its Substack, what can Schlub fans get if they join? We’ve seen some cool process drawings on there! Was the design of Roger Dalton inspired by any person you may know, or a character? What’s the design process like here for various characters? For Wyrm, did anyone say “more tubes!” or for Roger, did anyone say “schlubbier!”The premise has Roger switch with Cirrus, and while it’ll be great to see what Roger does with powers, will the story explore what Cirrus is going through in a very unhealthy human body? This book is funny, but it’s also full of action. In terms of both scripting and illustration, how do you balance laughs with tension?Tyrell, your style screams “there are easter eggs!” Is there a favorite thing you stuck into a scene or background in the series, and what is it so we can go looking? Anything else you fellas would like to plug today?
