🎉New Pico 2 W just dropped - and CircuitPython is ready to go!🎉

We just got the OK to put the Pico 2 W in the shop. You can pick it up at https://www.adafruit.com/product/6087, and you might be wondering: hey, do you have CircuitPython built for it? The answer is YES! We have secretly added support, and v9.1.2 has a build ready. We'll be adding it to the https://circuitpython.org/downloads downloads page shortly, but if you've got one in hand before launch somehow, you can check out the builds in the Absolute Latest S3 Bucket (https://adafruit-circuit-python.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html?prefix=bin/raspberry_pi_pico2_w/en_US/) the pico 2w is a great upgrade with twice the speed, twice the SRAM and twice the flash memory, solving many frustrations folks had with the original Pico W. The Great Search: NEMA-23 Motors!

We got a suggestion from our Friend to make a board that plugs onto the back of a NEMA stepper motor with one of these drivers (https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-stepper-motors) which is a nifty idea that we've seen before (https://gitlab.cba.mit.edu/quentinbolsee/tmc2209-xiao-rp2040): you minimize wire length and EMI because the high current/high-frequency signal is only going a few cm. Just watch out for your chip; you've got good heat sinking. There are standard sizes for steppers (https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-stepper-motors), so let's check out what NEMA motors are available at DigiKey for us to model. A4988 breakout prototype testing ⚙️🔧

We got our Allegro A4988 stepper driver breakout PCBs back and are ready to test them. First, we verified that STEP and DIR worked (yes!) and that the LEDs lit (yes, but we need to tweak the resistors to make the brightness even). Then we tried all of the stepper-settings, you can select 1, 4, 8, or 16-microsteps. All the sleep/reset/enable pins work. Finally, we checked the current limiting functionality with a potentiometer that can be twisted to select up to 2A current per coil. This directly affects the torque, so it's easy to test by verifying that we can stall the motor with hands or vise-grips. We'll order these with 2oz copper and get them into production next! EYE on NPI: Wurth Elektronik SMD Spacers

This week's EYE ON NPI is super spacey - it's Wurth Elektronik SMD Spacers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/smd-spacers) a variety of pick-and-place-able hardware components that solder directly to your PCB designs during in a standard SMT line, and speed up your assembly and simplify your mechanical design. The first thing you'll learn as an engineer is that not only do you need to worry about your schematic being correct, and the layout being manufacturable and optimal for signal and power integrity, but you also have to make sure it fits into whatever enclosure the mechanical engineer cooked up. Worse, sometimes that mechanical engineer is you! For example, a common design requirement is to have a front panel, and then you have to mount the PCB against it with standoffs or spacers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacers_and_standoffs) so that the buttons, knobs and switches are accessible but protected. We used this technique with the first Adafruit product x0xb0x (https://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/fab/finish/index.html) - in this case we used hex standoffs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/board-spacers-standoffs/582). These come in a vast array of configurations, lengths and threads. There's female-female, female/male and even unthreaded ones. By mixing and matching, plus adding machine screws and lock washers you can construct any sandwich of PCBs. Standoffs work great, but they add a lot of time to the assembly process: they have to be manually lined up with the PCB holes, they need lock washers to keep them from rotating in place, and they can fall into the enclosure during assembly or repair. Being metal that means shorting against all your nice PCBA components! That's why we're big fans of SMT solder-able standoffs. We've used them in our designs like the Adafruit Macropad (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/5128/14635377) and Memento (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5420) camera. We love that they come on pick and place reel, with pickup tabs, and solder nicely in place using a standard SMT processing method. They always have the same uniform height, same location, and will not twist when attaching the machine screws on the other side. The Wurth Elektronik SMD spacers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/smd-spacers) are available in a huge variety of configurations. For the threaded type: lengths from 1mm to 15mm and M2, M2.5 or M3 thread. For unthreaded spacers, hole diameters of 2.25mm, 2.7mm or 3.3mm. They also have male-thread spacers (https://www.digikey.com/short/bchz92w0), and the REDCUBE WP-SMRA series (https://www.digikey.com/short/mbnzwrvz) right-angle spacers which are brilliant and should allow for full-sided enclosures without wrangling. Which we've never seen before! If you want to try the full range, pick up a SMT Spacer Design Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/w%C3%BCrth-elektronik/977990/5965155). All are available on tape and reel / cut-tape and are in stock at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order today and you can start integrating these stand-offs into your next PCB design. The Great Search: SOIC SMT Clip

This week on the Great Search, we're following up on our Metro RP2350 (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/metro-rp2350-now-with-bigger-better-rp2350b) design we showed off last week. One thing we designed in is plenty of space around the NOR Flash chip (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/09/29/the-great-search-spi-nor-flash-memory-thegreatsearch-digikey-adafruit/) and PSRAM so that we can clip on a debugging probe. But what is a SOIC debugging probe? These 8-probes-in-one-clamp are a brilliant solution when debugging or for in-circuit-programming. When looking for one, we'll want to make sure that it can grab onto 0.3" wide SOICs, not just 0.15" wide. EYE on NPI: Nordic nRF54L15 Wireless SoC and Development Kit EYEonNPI

This week's EYE ON NPI is another great step forward in Bluetooth Low Energy development, it's Nordic's new nRF54 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf54l15-multiprotocol-soc) and nRF54L15 Wireless SoC Development Kit (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nordic-semi/nrf54l15-wireless-soc-development-kit). This is the heir-apparent to the popular nRF52840 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52840-CKAA-R/15929796) series chip which we know and love so much. The nRF54 series comes in L and H variants, for 'low' and 'high' power, but even the L series is a step up, with Cortex M33 running at 128MHz, and up to 1.5MB ReRAM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistive_random-access_memory) / 256KB SRAM. The H series is a whole new ball-game with dual M33 running at 320MHz, 2MB of ReRAM and 1MB of SRAM plus upgraded peripherals. Wow, the nRF series has come such a long way from the baby-steps of the SPI-peripheral nRF8001 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF8001-R2Q32-T/4626390) to the early ARM Cortex M0 plus BLE combo chip, the nRF51 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF51822-QFAB-R7/4626396). We still use that nRF51 in many of our Bluetooth LE boards like the Feather 32u4 and M0 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2995/5823444), also as a SPI-peripheral-to-BLE converter. The next big upgrade was the nRF52832 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF52832-QFAB-R/6051565) which bumped the processor from an M0 to an M4, but didn't do a huge bump to the Flash or SRAM compared the nRF51. The big leap after that was the nRF52840 which is still an amazing chip: USB peripheral means you can use this chip as the main processor, and it can do all your processing, user interface, sensor reading and wireless communication with only a few passives to support it. There was an nRF5340 released about two years ago (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nordic-semiconductor-asa/NRF5340-CLAA-R/14323741) but much like Windows releases, we tend to skip every other chip. We happened to check digikey.com/new yesterday and saw the nRF54L (https://www.digikey.com/short/zf8pz0cr) series pop up, which is exciting as it was pre-announced about a year ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG8bRNaNHrg) and is now shipping to customers! The nRF54L (https://www.digikey.com/short/zf8pz0cr) comes in three variants, which is not surprising because we've seen earlier chips come in 'lite' versions that cut pricing by having less flash or RAM. All variants have a 128MHz Cortex M33 with a RISC-V co-processor, and a BLE stack. One interesting thing we noted, is that instead of flash memory, which is big and expensive and hard to do with modern fab processes, the nRF54 uses ReRAM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistive_random-access_memory) which is non-volatile and uses memristor technology, which is pretty cool! The nRF54 series supports BLE 6, one new capability is channel sounding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_sounding) which will improve the ability of phones to locate 'find my' tags that have become such a popular usage for the nRF chipset. Traditionally, the nRF52 chips in these tags use RSSI to measure approximate distance. There's been some improvements on the technology such as Angle-of-Attack that was introduced in BLE 5.1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EosGQtGioiY) but now with a broad-sprectrum burst it's looking like some of the lessons from UWB (https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/03/15/sera-nx040-ultra-wide-band-and-bluetooth-combo-module-eyeonnpi-digikey-digikey-lairdconnect-adafruit/) are being integrated to the BLE specification to improve item location. The nRF54L series is launching with the L15 variant (https://www.digikey.com/short/rd9fr19f), that's the one with the most memory, so it's a good start: once you have your design settled you can transition to the smallest chip you can get away with. They're coming into stock shortly so sign up at DigiKey to get notified when the package you're looking for arrives. While you wait, you can order up one of the nRF54L15-DK (https://www.digikey.com/short/qvhqv85q) dev kits, which are only $39 and in stock right now for immediate shipment. Order today and you'll get everything you need to start developing the nRF54 (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-hardware/nRF54L15-DK) - a built in debugger, power management chip, broken out GPIO, user buttons and LEDs. While you wait for your dev kit to arrive, you can start thinking about the nRF54H series (https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/nRF54H20) which is the high-end chip with dual M33 running at 320 MHz, 1 MB of SRAM, 2MB of ReRAM , high speed USB and I3C support (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC4zkvdVag4)!

The Great Search: 5V-12V Load Stepper Driver Chip

We had a request to stock more stepper driver boards, and they've got a point: we have a few brushed DC driver boards based on chips like the DRV8833 (https://www.digikey.com/short/z14mb55f) but no dedicated chips like the Trinamic's (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/06/18/eye-on-npi-tmc2226-sa-ultra-silent-stepper-motor-driver-eyeonnpi-digikey-adafruit-digikey-adafruit-trinamic_mc/). EYE ON NPI - Arduino + Finder Opta

This week's EYE ON NPI is Perfect and Looking Cool - We're checking out the Arduino Opta line of programmable PLCs (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/opta-expansions). PLC stands for "programmable logic controller" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmable_logic_controller) and these devices are used in manufacturing and robotics to automate sensor inputs and robotic control outputs in factories. Because of dependable PLC performance, your food, clothing, medicine and water are affordable and high quality, with repeatable results. Manufacturing engineers have used PLCs since the 80's, and they've been essential for the 3rd Industrial Revolution (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Age). If in the second industrial revolution moved us from individually-manufactured handmade goods (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handicraft) to assembly-line repeatability (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assembly_line), then the information age and PLCs took us from the back-breaking work of doing the same task day-in-day-out to robots (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjL_dQ5HAAg). Tasks like: measuring out the exact weight or count of product, applying labels, heating to temperature and holding it there for 45 minutes. While designing the machines that do this automatically is also time-consuming expensive, it's something you only have to do once. The Opta was designed in collaboration with Finder, (https://opta.findernet.com/en/) an Italian company like Arduino, which specializes in PLC design. This is a great team-up because Finder already had a family automation products and tools, so it has the industrial experience whereas Arduino has the IDE, cloud and PCB-design skills to bring in the user experience. The Opta family looks like a classic PLC, with screw terminal inputs and outputs. There are LEDs embedded to the case that can be controlled, as well as analog inputs, digital IO and built in power relays. All of the IO ports have wide voltage ranges like 0-10V and are well protected from under/over-volting, short-circuiting or ESD. Inside is an STM32H747XI (https://www.digikey.com/short/hzr2rnv2), a ultra-powerful Cortex M7 @ 480MHz + Cortex M4 @ 240MHz chip with a ton of SRAM and Flash. It can easily run an entire factory! Some versions have WiFi, Ethernet, or RS-485 for connectivity - however they are all designed to run standalone. Traditional PLCs are completely opaque, to the point where you have to use only the proprietary software that the vendor provides. What's nice about the Opta (https://www.digikey.com/short/jbb74j41) is you get to use the Arduino IDE, which has integrated support with a couple different programming systems. (https://docs.arduino.cc/software/plc-ide/tutorials/plc-programming-introduction/) You can of course use the classic Arduino sketch system (https://opta.findernet.com/en/tutorial/getting-started) and use digitalWrite(), analogRead() and all the other C++ capabilities of the classic IDE. But you can also use the classic "IEC 61131-3 programming languages" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_61131-3), Structured Text ST, Instruction List IL, Ladder Diagram LD, Sequential Function Chart SFC, and Function Block Diagram FBD. These are somewhat archaic languages, but many mechanical engineers are trained in their use, so the Opta is a nice transitionary device. There's also expansion options so if you want more digital input pins and relays, you can plug a port on (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/arduino/opta-expansions) which will give you 16 more inputs and 8 more SSR or electromechanial relay outputs. If you've ever been curious about how PLCs work, or if you want to maintain, upgrade or repair factory equiptment, the Arduino + Finder Opta (https://www.digikey.com/short/jbb74j41) is an great product which will let you replicate the microcontroller experience to industrial automation. And best of all, it's in stock right now at DigiKey! Order today and DigiKey will ship your Opta immediately so that you can be manufacturing the future by tomorrow afternoon.

The Great Search: DMX Transceiver

Following up on our last Great Search for a DMX / XLR connector, our next step is to find a DMX transceiver. We started by looking at official and common DMX shields for Arduino since we know there's a ton out there, including the semi-official TinkerKit brand (https://web.archive.org/web/20140727121929/http://www.tinkerkit.com/dmx-master-shield/). These boards all use the MAX485 (https://www.digikey.com/short/q7mbb9bj) and XLR connectors. They often *don't* have isolation or transient voltage protection. While the MAX485 is readily available, let's look at some other options that might work out for our design, especially if they have isolation built in! We covered a DMX transceiver on EYE ON NPI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=X12v_qLC4-M) a few weeks ago, and after learning about how DMX works, we decided to make a DMX FeatherWing much like the MIDI 'Wing (https://www.adafruit.comproduct/4740). We'll need a chip, a hardware UART, and a couple of GPIOs. We'll also need two DIN connectors, one for the input and one for the output. EYE ON NPI - Teledyne FLIR Lepton® 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera

This week's EYE ON NPI knows where New York Hottest Club is at, it's the Teledyne FLIR Lepton® 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/teledyne-flir/pocket-sized-thermal-camera), a bite-sized full-featured video camera for remote thermal measurements. With a resolution of 160x120 pixels, remote temperature measurements of -40°C to +300°C, and the size of a coin, this camera can be embedded into any kind of product, whether it's running Linux, RTOS or a plain old microcontroller. Thermal cameras are multi-purpose, with usage in medical, industrial, construction, maintenance and security industries. Use them to make sure equipment is running at the right temperature and not overheating, that insulation for a room is performing adequately, locating people or animals, or detecting fevers without touching. FLIR makes the best low-cost, small-size thermal cameras and they're available off-the-shelf at DigiKey for quick integration. Each camera outputs either a simple grayscale-valued frame or one with a false-color RGB888 palette - the palette can be configured over I2C. The Lepton 3.1R is one of a series of cameras available from FLIR, including the Lepton 2 and 3.5. What's great is all have the same physical pinout and shape that can plug into a socket. This is great for manufacturing yield and field repair: the expensive module is placed last in the manufacturing line so earlier yield issues don't affect it. Also you can swap different resolution/FOV modules to customize for the end-user. For example, the Lepton 2 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/flir-lepton/500-0763-01/6250105) is a little less expensive but has only 80x60 pixels. Or you can upgrade to the Lepton 3.5 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/flir-lepton/500-0771-01/7606616) with similar resolution but a narrower FOV. Note that the FOV will affect the distortion greatly: a wider FOV requires a lens to focus the IR emissions but will fisheye the middle and compress the edges. There's software from Teledyne FLIR (https://www.flir.com/developer/lepton-integration/lepton-3.1r-dewarping-application-note/) that will "de-warp" the 3.1R's output, using Open CV, to give you more realistic imagery. To learn how to work with these modules, we recommend the Lepton engineering integration guide (https://flir.netx.net/file/asset/13333/original/attachment). Unlike the simplest thermal camera modules and sensors, which use only I2C, or the most complex USB-video output devices, the Leptons use a combination on I2C for configuration - called the CCI Command and Control Interface - and SPI for VoSPI - a.k.a. video over SPI. This makes them possible to integrate with a wide range of microcontrollers or microcomputers. As mentioned before, you don't solder the cameras to the PCB. Instead they are plugged into a common Molex 1050281001 socket (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/molex/1050281001/3045223) which is only $1 at DigiKey and comes on a pick-and-place reel. If you want to get started very quickly, DigiKey and GroupGets (https://www.digikey.com/en/supplier-centers/groupgets) have partnered up to offer a wide range of breakout boards, USB adapters and dev-boards that feature the Teledyne FLIR Leptons (https://www.digikey.com/short/2djrnzpr) GroupGets also published firmware and example code (https://github.com/orgs/groupgets/repositories?type=all) to get you started with their products so you can quickly evaluate the Lepton and make sure it will work and what resolution/FOV is ideal: simply swap the different models in and out of the Molex socket. GroupGets also works with makers to get their prototypes to market, working with DigiKey for part sourcing (https://www.digikey.com/en/blog/digikey-partners-with-groupgets-to-help-startups-getmade) so if you have an idea and need a help making it to production check them out! If you need a high-quality thermal camera that is plug-and-play, easy to integrate and at a great cost, the Teledyne FLIR Lepton 3.1R Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera is hot hot HOT and in stock right now for immediate purchase from DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/short/0zr8w59q). Order today, pick up an eval board too, and you can be measuring the world around you by tomorrow afternoon.
